Gender differences in the predictive effect of perceive emotional intelligence on depressive symptomatology in older adults

AbstractThe aim of this study was to analyze the associations between emotional intelligence, gender, and depressive symptomatology in older adults. To test whether there were differences between groups in the Trait Meta-Mood Scale dimension, univariate and multivariate analysis of variance were carried out, and t tests were performed to find the differences between groups in the variables that had shown differences in the univariate analysis. Participants were 853 Spanish cognitively healthy older adults between 60 and 95 years of age, with a mean age of 71.7 (SD = 7.4), of whom 64.9% were women. Self-reports were administered to assess the different variables under study. Specifically, the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 was used to assess emotional intelligence, and the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale to measure depressive symptomatology. The three dimensions of emotional intelligence showed differences as a function of gender and depression. Higher scores were found in the three dimensions of emotional intelligence in women. Moreover, people with higher levels of depressive symptomatology had higher scores on attention, and people with low depressive symptomatology had lower levels of clarity and repair. Women with depressive symptomatology showed high levels of attention, in contrast to men and women with low symptomatology. Considering the subjective perception of emotional intelligence, high attention to emotions and the female gender seem to be factors associated with depression in older adults, which allows us to outline a critical profile for depression that should receive special attention. Given the impact of depressive symptomatology in older adults, it is important to identify these profiles in order to detect possible risk factors for depression more effectively.

Depression and Anxiety in Old Age during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Comparative Study of Individuals at Cardiovascular Risk and the General Population.

Our study aims to examine the associations of sociodemographic factors, social support, resilience, and perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic with late-life depression and anxiety symptoms in a cardiovascular risk group and a matched sample from the German general population during the beginning of the pandemic and draw a comparison regarding psychosocial characteristics. Data of n = 1236 participants (aged 64-81 years) were analyzed, with n = 618 participants showing a cardiovascular risk profile, and n = 618 participants from the general population. The cardiovascular risk sample had slightly higher levels of depressive symptoms and felt more threatened by the virus due to pre-existing conditions. In the cardiovascular risk group, social support was associated with less depressive and anxiety symptoms. In the general population, high social support was associated with less depressive symptoms. Experiencing high levels of worries due to COVID-19 was associated with more anxiety in the general population. Resilience was associated with less depressive and anxiety symptoms in both groups. Compared to the general population, the cardiovascular risk group showed slightly higher levels of depressive symptomatology even at the beginning of the pandemic and may be supported by addressing perceived social support and resilience in prevention programs targeting mental health.

The relationship between depressive symptoms and positive emotional anticipation of goal achievement

Depression is associated with difficulties in goal pursuit which could be related to deficits in emotional anticipation regarding goal success. Therefore, the reported study investigated emotional anticipation for personal goals and whether this differs as a function of depressive symptoms. After listing approach and avoidance goals, 263 participants made predictions about these goals (e.g. likelihood of achievement and controllability) and rated the vividness and perspective with which they envisaged goal achievement. They also provided ratings of either anticipated (predicted emotions that would accompany goal success) or anticipatory (in-the-moment emotions when imagining goal success) positive emotions. Higher levels of depressive symptomatology were associated with pessimistic predictions about goal achievement, coupled with reduced vividness and greater adoption of observer perspective when envisaging achievement. Furthermore, those experiencing higher levels of depressive symptoms evidenced biases in both anticipated and anticipatory positive emotions associated with goal success. They believed that goal achievement would bring them lower levels of positive emotion and also reported less in-the-moment happiness, satisfaction, and pleasure when thinking about achieving their goals. Irrespective of depressive symptom level, anticipated emotions were generally stronger than anticipatory emotions. These findings have implications both for research on future-oriented emotions (anticipated and anticipatory) and for the development of therapeutic techniques to aid depression.

Racial and gender discrimination by teachers: Risks for Black girls' depressive symptomatology and suicidal ideation.

The present study examines how race and gender-specific factors (i.e., racial centrality and gender role beliefs) serve as protective assets against the harmful impact of racial and gender discrimination on depressive symptomatology and suicidal ideation for Black girls. Our sample included 232 Black girls ages 15-17 years old (Mage = 16.85) from a socioeconomically diverse community context. Our findings revealed that racial and gender discrimination from teachers was associated with higher levels of depressive symptomatology. Perceived gender discrimination by teachers and endorsing traditional gender role beliefs were associated with higher reports of suicidal ideation. Perceiving higher instances of racial discrimination from teachers and reporting lower levels of racial centrality were associated with higher depressive symptomatology. The findings suggest the need to create safe spaces and to consider the interactions that occur in school settings that impact the mental health of Black girls. Mattering and Depressive Symptoms in Portuguese Postpartum Women: The Indirect Effect of Loneliness.

Background: Postpartum depression is described as the most prevalent clinical condition in the postpartum period, with several negative consequences. The current study aimed to understand the relationship between mattering, loneliness and depressive symptoms in Portuguese postpartum women and to examine the potential mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between mattering and depressive symptomatology among postpartum women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a sample collected online composed of 530 Portuguese women in the postpartum period, who answered self-report questionnaires to assess depressive symptoms, mattering, and loneliness. Results: It was found that the relationships between mattering, loneliness, and depressive symptoms were significant, p < 0.001: (a) higher levels of mattering were associated with lower levels of loneliness and depressive symptomatology and (b) higher levels of loneliness were associated with higher levels of depressive symptomatology. The relationship between mattering and postpartum depressive symptoms occurred directly and indirectly through loneliness, 95% CI = [−0.75, −0.46]. Conclusions: These results highlight the importance of studying loneliness as a possible risk factor for postpartum depression and alert to the pertinence of considering mattering and loneliness in the assessment and intervention with women in the perinatal period.

Can’t Shake the Prison Guard Blues: Examining the Effects of Work Stress, Job Satisfaction, Boundary Violations, and the Mistreatment of Inmates on the Depressive Symptomatology of Correctional Officers

Many correctional officers who work in close proximity with inmates are at a heightened risk of experiencing feelings of psychological distress. We analyzed 501 surveys collected from correctional officers within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to identify characteristics of officers who are likely to exhibit signs of depression. Our findings reveal that female officers, as well as officers who work in higher custody levels, are more likely than other officers to report higher levels of depressive symptomatology. We also found that officers who experienced high levels of self-reported job-related stress were more likely to suffer from depression. Officers with attitudes favorable to the mistreatment of inmates also reported higher levels of depression. Officers who perceived their coworkers were engaging in boundary violations were no more or less likely to exhibit signs of depression. Given these findings, we conclude that organizational and supervisory support, coupled with positive incentives and employee assistance programs, may help mitigate the risks of depression for correctional officers, thereby making these salient staff more efficient and effective in the prison workplace.

Validation of CES-D8 among Czech university students during COVID-19 pandemic

Objectives. Due to the rise of depressive symptomatology especially among vulnerable populations such as young adults during the COVID-19 outbreak, a reliable measuring tool is needed. Because of the lack of such studies, the authors decided to validate the 8-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D 8) among Czech university students capturing the beginning of lockdown experience.Statistical analyses. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted and structural equation modelling with diagonally weighted least squares estimation using lavaan was employed. Different hypotheses about the dimensionality of the CES-D 8 scale were tested. The authors assessed the measurement equivalence of the CES-D 8 scale according to gender using multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. The effect of socio-demographic and COVID-19 issues variables on depression was examined.Results. One dimensional model with correlated errors showed sufficient validity and therefore, the best fit. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis results revealed that the factor structure is invariant across gender. Women and those who reported financial distress and academic stress showed a higher level of depressive symptomatology. On the other hand, relationships proved to have a protective effect.Limitations. The sample came from an online survey, respondents were self-selected. There was a gender imbalance in the sample that cannot be explained by a higher number of women in the Czech university environment.Conclusions. The CES-D 8 proved to be a useful instrument for measuring depressed mood that opens further possibilities for depression research in the university environment and during pandemic situations.

Family-reported barriers and predictors of short-term attendance in a multidisciplinary intervention for managing childhood obesity: A psycho-family-system based randomised controlled trial (ENTREN-F).

This study was aimed to examine patient enrolment in the pre-intervention stage, family-reported barriers, attendance rates and underlying predictors of short-term attendance in a family-system-based randomised controlled trial for managing childhood obesity in children aged 8-12-years-old (ENTREN-F). Psychosocial and anthropometric measures were collected through primary health referral. The data were used for descriptive analyses of sample characteristics and linear regression analyses. Low enrolment rates and several family-reported barriers were observed in the pre-intervention stage. Logistical barriers were the most frequent family-reported reason for attrition in the different stages of the study. Having a first face-to-face orientation session with the families and the use of motivational interviewing helped to improve adherence in the initial phases of the study. After 6months of intervention, family based treatments (FBTs) under consideration achieve greater adherence compared with the standard intervention. Moreover, family involvement was a predictor of success for better treatment adherence rates. By contrast, participants who attended a brief standard intervention, mothers with primary education, greater body mass index, higher levels of depressive symptomatology and more critical comments towards their children, children with higher weight status and lower levels of self-reported depressive symptoms at baseline attended interventions less frequently. In future programmes a comprehensive screening of modifiable factors related to family and their setting characteristics is paramount prior to intervention, identifying key barriers related to drop-out, especially in the case of less-advantaged families.

Association of mental demands in the workplace with cognitive function in older adults at increased risk for dementia

ObjectivesGrowing evidence suggests a protective effect of high mental demands at work on cognitive function in later life. However, evidence on corresponding associations in older adults at increased risk for dementia is currently lacking. This study investigates the association between mental demands at work and cognitive functioning in the population of the AgeWell.de-trial.MethodsCross-sectional investigation of the association between global cognitive functioning (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) and mental demands at work in older individuals at increased risk for dementia (Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging, and Incidence of Dementia (CAIDE)score ≥ 9; n = 941, age: 60–77 years). Occupational information was matched to Occupational Information Network (O*NET)-descriptors. Associations between cognitive function and O*NET-indices executive, verbal and novelty were investigated using generalized linear models.ResultsHigher values of index verbal (b = .69, p = .002) were associated with better cognitive function when adjusting for covariates. No association was observed for indices executive (b = .37, p = .062) and novelty (b = .45, p = .119). Higher education, younger age, and employment were linked to better cognitive function, while preexisting medical conditions did not change the associations. Higher levels of depressive symptomatology were associated with worse cognitive function.ConclusionsHigher levels of verbal demands at work were associated with better cognitive function for older adults with increased dementia risk. This suggests an advantage for older persons in jobs with high mental demands even after retirement and despite prevalent risk factors. Longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm these results and evaluate the potential of workplaces to prevent cognitive decline through increased mental demands.

Depressive Symptoms and Multimorbidity: Is There an Association for Older Black Americans?

Objectives: Many existing studies have reported a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms among older Black Americans. They also experience a disproportionate burden of multimorbidity, the presence of multiple chronic conditions. Therefore, this study was to identify the association between depressive symptomatology and multimorbidity among older Black Americans. Methods: This study analyzed the 2014 Health and Retirement Study (N = 1206). A negative binomial regression was applied to assess the association between multimorbidity and depressive symptomatology. Results: Higher levels of chronic health problems were associated with higher levels of depressive symptomatology among older Black Americans (Incidence rate ratio = 1.093; p = .002). Lower self-reported health, lower income, and lower educational attainment were also related to higher depressive symptoms. Discussion: Older Black Americans experience vulnerability on multiple levels, and shouldering additional psychosocial and financial burdens adds to already established physical health disparities. This requires critical attention from both practice and policy.

Recreational Screen Time Activities and Depressive Symptomatology Among Adolescents: the Moderating Role of Interpersonal Factors and Gender

The purpose of the study was to examine the moderating role of attachment style, coping style, and perceived social support in the relationship between daily recreational screen time and depressive symptomatology over time. Complete data from 170 adolescents (106 females) from a larger research study were included at each time point. The mean age at baseline was 13.21 years (SD = 1.06) for females and 12.67 years (SD = 0.64) for males. Data related to depressive symptomatology (Children’s Depression Inventory), attachment style (Adolescent Relationship Questionnaire), coping style (Coping Inventory for Stressful Situation), perceived social support (McKnight Risk Factor Survey-IV), recreational screen time activities, and sociodemographic information were analyzed. Hierarchical linear regression models showed that daily recreational screen time at baseline (T0) predicted depressive symptomatology at T4 (4-year follow-up) (B = 0.49, p < .001), but attachment style, coping style, and perceived social support at baseline (T0) did not moderate this relationship. However, a significant three-way interaction emerged. Among adolescents who reported receiving high levels of perceived social support, higher daily recreational screen time was associated with higher levels of depressive symptomatology over time (Β = 2.29, p < .05) and this relationship was stronger for males. A significant two-way interaction emerged between gender and attachment style (B = − 4.98, p < .05), with insecure attachment style as a risk factor for depressive symptomatology over time, for males. Findings highlight the importance of considering gender and interpersonal factors in gaining a better understanding of how recreational screen time may influence depressive symptomatology among adolescents.

Hospitalisation in high-risk pregnancy patients: is prenatal attachment affected?

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare prenatal attachment in women hospitalised due to high-risk pregnancy with prenatal attachment in non-hospitalised patients. To describe the impact of social support, socio-demographic factors and the nature of the pregnancy on prenatal attachment, anxiety and depression. Study Design: An exploratory, cross-sectional and descriptive study utilising the Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The sample comprised 80 hospitalised and 88 non-hospitalised patients. Result: No difference in prenatal attachment was found between the two groups. The hospitalised group presented higher levels of depressive symptomatology and anxiety. Social support had a significant effect on the hospitalised group, improving attachment quality. Conclusion: Incorporation of members of the patient’s support network may help to improve quality of prenatal attachment during hospitalisation. Detection and treatment of anxiety and/or depression in hospitalised patients is recommended given their impact on the mental health of mother and baby.

Screening for depression among a sample of US college students who engage in recreational prescription opioid misuse.

Background: Among student populations, literature has identified associations between prescription opioid misuse and symptoms of depression such as hopelessness, sadness, and emotional pain. Thus far, existing literature has yet to investigate associations between prescription opioid misuse and depression using validated screening instruments for depression when exploring such associations. The purpose of this study was to utilize a validated screening tool to explore quantifiable presence of depression among college students who engage in recreational prescription opioid misuse (RPOM). Additionally, gender differences in depression and co-occurring substance use are examined. Methods: Students (n = 104) of a large university in the Southeastern United States who reported ROM within the past 6 months completed instrumentation assessing demographics, substance use, as well as, screening tools for depression and possible opioid use disorder (OUD). Results: Positive depression screens were significantly higher among females, however, nearly56% of participants screened positive for major depression. Though high levels of co-occurring substance use were observed among the entire sample, males were significantly more likely to report cocaine use, more frequent use of alcohol and marijuana, as well as, exhibit a positive screen for disordered opioid use, at a rate 5 times that of their female counterparts. Conclusion: Students who engage in RPOM are a particularly heightened-risk subsample of the college population who exhibit high levels of depressive symptomatology and substance use behavior. Targeted programming and further investigations are needed among this specific population. Future studies are encouraged to utilize validated instruments when assessing depression among students.

Self-distancing as a path to help-seeking for people with depression

ObjectiveThree studies explored whether self-distancing, a method where the self is treated as an other, can impact help-seeking among those with depression. Self-distancing was expected to reduce the negative biases associated with depression by minimizing self-relevance through taking the perspective of an objective other. We hypothesized that when thinking about a past experience of help-seeking, a selfdistancing prompt would cause increased help-seeking intentions and more favorable help-seeking outcome expectations. The influence of selfdistancing on the self-stigma of help-seeking was also explored. MethodsParticipants were randomly assigned to write (Studies 1 and 3) or watch a video (Study 2) where they were prompted to think about helpseeking from their own perspective or an objective other's perspective. Studies 2 and 3 were pre-registered on the Open Science Framework. ResultsIn Study 1, self-distancing increased help-seeking intentions but did not influence help-seeking expectations or self-stigma. The a priori hypotheses were not supported in Study 2 or 3. However, exploratory analyses of Study 3 revealed an interaction between condition and level of depressive symptomatology indicating that the distancing condition weakened the relationship between higher levels of depressive symptomatology and lower help-seeking intentions, and between higher levels of depressive symptomatology and higher self-stigma. Additionally, analyses of written responses indicated participants in the distancing condition were significantly less likely to write responses void of positive content. ConclusionAlthough a priori hypotheses were not supported, further research is warranted as results indicate the potential for using self-distancing approaches to increasing help-seeking among some people with depressive symptomatology.

Contribution of autobiographic memory impairment to subjective memory complaints in focal epilepsy

“My memory is terrible!” is a common refrain among people with epilepsy, but such complaints are not reliably linked to poor performances on standard tests of memory. Negative affect like depression and anxiety are the most robust predictor of these complaints; however, neither do they entirely account for the phenomenon. The contribution of autobiographic memory impairment to subjective memory complaints in focal epilepsy has not been well-explored despite autobiographic memory impairments being common in patients with epilepsy, and the face validity of relating day-to-day memory failings to such a personally relevant form of memory. The current study sought to clarify whether autobiographic memory dysfunction contributes to subjective complaints in epilepsy, above and beyond negative affect, objective memory impairment, and epileptological factors in a large sample of patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy relative to healthy controls (N = 135). Patients were stratified into groups with mesial temporal (MT; n = 40) versus nonmesial temporal (NMT; n = 46) foci. Compared to controls (n = 46), both patient groups reported more bitter subjective memory complaints (p < 0.001, large effect size), demonstrated poorer episodic (p = 0.001, large effect size) and semantic autobiographical recall (p = 0.004, medium effect size), and had higher levels of depressive symptomatology (p = 0.011, medium effect size), and trait neuroticism (p = 0.015, medium effect size). Contrary to expectations, multiple regression analyses revealed that autobiographic memory function was not an independent predictor of subjective memory complaints in either group with epilepsy. In people with epilepsy with MT foci, objective verbal memory dysfunction, neuroticism, and female gender predicted memory complaints (R2 = 0.70, p = 0.015), whereas only neuroticism predicted memory complaints in people with epilepsy with NMT foci (R2 = 0.21, p = 0.001). Although patients' poor recall of their autobiographical memories did not contribute to their concerns about their day-to-day memory function, the findings indicate that the location of the epileptogenic focus can provide clues as to the underlying contributors to subjective memory complaints in focal epilepsy. Important clinical implications to stem from these findings include the need for clinicians to adopt a patient-tailored, multifactorial lens when managing memory complaints in people with epilepsy, taking into account both psychological and cognitive factors.

The relationship between depression and sexual health service utilization among men who have sex with men (MSM) in C\xf4te d'Ivoire, West Africa

BackgroundIn Cote D’Ivoire, there has been limited coverage of evidence-based sexual health services specifically supporting men who have sex with men (MSM). To date, there has been limited study of the determinants of engagement in these services including multiple intersecting stigmas and depression.Methods1301 MSM aged 18 years and older, were recruited using respondent-driven sampling in Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Gagnoa and Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire from January 2015 to October 2015. Inclusion criteria included anal sex with another man in the past 12 months were to complete a structured questionnaire including the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 to screen for depression. Chi-Square tests were used to test difference in healthcare utilization across variables, and multiple logistic regression was used to test the association between depression and health care utilization represented by HIV and sexually transmittable infection testing and treatment.ResultsDepression (aOR:1.40, 95% CI: 1.07–1.84), being aged 25–29 years (aOR:1.84, 95% CI: 1.11–3.03),unemployed (aOR:0.64, 95% CI: 0.42–0.98), being a student (aOR:0.67, 95% CI: 0.48–0.96), being identified as male (aOR:0.44, 95% CI: 0.29–0.67), and identifying as homosexual (aOR:0.74, 95% CI:0.56–0.99) were significantly associated with utilization of sexual health care services in the final multivariable model. Healthcare enacted stigma (aOR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.03–2.33) was associated with utilizing sexual health care services, but perceived healthcare stigma, social stigma and family stigma were not.ConclusionGiven higher levels of depressive symptomatology among those engaging in sexual health care services, this engagement represents an opportunity for service integration which may have synergistic benefits for both sexual and mental health. Moreover, MSM in Cote D’Ivoire who had engaged in sexual health services were more likely to report having experienced health-care enacted stigma. Taken together, these results reinforce the need for stigma mitigation interventions to support sustained engagement in HIV prevention, treatment and care services as a means of reducing health disparities among MSM in Cote d’Ivoire.

Is pregnancy-specific anxiety more enduring than general anxiety using self-report measures? A short-term longitudinal study

ABSTRACTObjective: To investigate whether the rates of transient and enduring distress differ between general and pregnancy-specific anxiety in antenatal English-speaking women.Background: Evidence indicates that half of women with high levels of general anxiety during pregnancy will no longer be highly anxious after a few weeks, without having received treatment. Pregnancy-specific anxiety, however, may be more enduring, as many worries concerning the forthcoming birth, whether the baby will be healthy and the woman’s ability to care for a newborn are likely to continue, or increase, during the pregnancy.Method: Women attending a public hospital antenatal clinic completed several mood questionnaires, including a mix of general anxiety and pregnancy-specific anxiety scales (T1). Between 2 and weeks later (T2), still during pregnancy, participants completed the same measures via a phone interview.Results: Between 76 and 243 women completed the different measures at both time points. For each measure the result was similar: about half of women scoring high at the first assessment (T1) continued to score high at T2 on both the general and pregnancy-specific anxiety measures, despite not receiving any specialist intervention. By contrast, over 90% of women initially scoring low on the various measures continued to score low at T2.Conclusion: Whether women are screened for pregnancy-specific or for general anxiety, around half scoring ‘high’ on the measure will no longer be in the anxious range a few weeks later. They thus have ‘transient’ anxiety. This transient/enduring finding was also confirmed for those with high levels of depressive symptomatology.

Enhanced cortisol secretion in acute transient global amnesia

IntroductionStress-related transient inhibition of memory formation in the hippocampus has been hypothesized as one of the underlying pathomechanisms of transient global amnesia (TGA). TGA episodes, during which patients cannot encode and recall new information (anterograde amnesia affecting episodic long-term memory), are frequently preceded by a psychologically or physically stressful event. MethodsWe measured salivary cortisol during acute TGA in 14 patients, as well as cortisol day-profiles and the effect of experimental exposure to stress (using the socially evaluated cold pressor test) on cortisol levels during the subacute phase. We assessed psychiatric comorbidity as well as depression, trait anxiety and chronic stress. These findings were compared with data of 20 healthy controls. FindingsNine patients reported a precipitating stressor and all 14 developed typical hippocampal lesions on follow-up MRI. During TGA, salivary cortisol levels were more than 3-fold higher compared to time-matched day levels. While there was no difference in mean cortisol levels of the diurnal rhythm, we found a significant interaction between groups during experimental stress exposure (p = 0.049) with the TGA group revealing a higher cortisol increase. The TGA group reported higher levels of depressive symptomatology (CES-D) and higher scores of chronic stress (TICS) compared with the control group and there was a significant correlation between cortisol increase during TGA and the results of self-rating according to the CES-D (r = 0.615; p = 0.004), as well as to the STAI (r = 0.702; p = 0.001). ConclusionOur findings of enhanced secretion of cortisol in acute TGA patients correlating with symptoms of depression and anxiety and a persisting hyperreactivity to experimental stress in the subacute phase support the hypothesis that stress might be significant for the pathogenesis of TGA.

Burnout and Depressive Symptomatology of the Employees in Institutions of Chronic Diseases

AbstractThe purpose of the research is twofold: a) to determine whether the employees in Greek Institutions of Chronic Diseases show burnout and depressive symptomatology and to connect them with sociodemographic characteristics and b)to investigate the relation between these two health factors. The participants completed a Greek version of Maslach's Burnout Inventory (MBI), a Greek version of Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), and a questionnaire regarding the socio-demographic characteristics. According to the results of the research, a significant percentage of participants show burnout and depressive symptomatology. Testing positive for a genetic predisposition to depression magnifies retrospective memory for depressive symptoms.

Depression, like other mental disorders and health conditions generally, is increasingly construed as genetically based. This research sought to determine whether merely telling people that they have a genetic predisposition to depression can cause them to retroactively remember having experienced it. U.S. adults (men and women) were recruited online to participate (Experiment 1: N = 288; Experiment 2: N = 599). After conducting a test disguised as genetic screening, we randomly assigned some participants to be told that they carried elevated genetic susceptibility to depression, whereas others were told that they did not carry this genetic liability or were told that they carried elevated susceptibility to a different disorder. Participants then rated their experience of depressive symptoms over the prior 2 weeks on a modified version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Participants who were told that their genes predisposed them to depression generally reported higher levels of depressive symptomatology over the previous 2 weeks, compared to those who did not receive this feedback. Given the central role of self-report in psychiatric diagnosis, these findings highlight potentially harmful consequences of personalized genetic testing in mental health. (PsycINFO Database Record
