Preface: 8th International Conference on Education, Management and Social Science (EMSS 2024)

At the end of 2024, we would like to present an international proceeding that containing of the selected papers from the 2024 8th International Conference on Education, Management and Social Science (EMSS 2024). This conference is an annual important event to publish of research results. We are hoping that the event will become a foothold of thinking in welcoming of global developments. In addition, publications packaged in this seminar will further strengthening existence and reputation as an educational institution that excels in scientific publication at national and international levels. EMSS 2024 is a leading international conference for researchers and practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from education research, management engineering, historical research, humanities, sociology, and social science. This conference was held in Manila, Philippines during September 21-22, 2024 with the aim to act as a forum for exchange and dissemination of knowledge and ideas on the latest developments. We hope the international proceedings will be able to encourage students, teachers, lecturers, practitioners, researchers, and higher education community in developing scientific research and publications to support the nation's developments. Conducting research and publishing the results of the research and its analysis is one of the main criteria that must be fulfilled by lecturers in order to fulfill the responsibilities of lecturers as part of the Tridharma of Higher Education. The relevance of lecturers conducting investigations, research, and publishing scientific articles is raised substantially by the demands for publication by the higher education community. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN RB) Number 17 of 2013 and the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 92 of 2014 issued by the Minister of Education and Culture, academic promotion is recognized for publication in nationally accredited scientific journals as well as international reputable journals in their respective fields. This rule provides direction so that scientific publications and functional positions of lecturers in Indonesia continue to increase. The skills to write and publish scientific articles are very important for researchers, lecturers, and students in Indonesia. However, most of them still have difficulty writing down their findings in the form of scientific publications and publishing them in well-known international journals. Therefore, this activity which is part of community service is carried out to cultivate the ability to write and publish scientific publications for the benefit of students, lecturers and researchers in Indonesia. The Zoom Meeting digital platform is used for service-related operations. Researchers, lecturers, and students from various regions in Indonesia participated in this activity. The information obtained by the participants about the field of scientific writing in well-known international journals is very much. Enhancing Educational Access and Equality: The Significance of Scholarship Schemes for Students from Marginalized Communities in Higher Education

Considering the study conducted in North Maharashtra, this research delves into the challenges arising from diminishing public budgets for education juxtaposed against the escalating need for additional resources. Many countries, including India, are now exploring alternative strategies for subsidizing higher education, particularly to support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. One prominent mechanism in this regard is the provision of scholarship schemes. Scholarship schemes have been integral to India's educational landscape since 1961. This paper critically analyzes 24 scholarship schemes administered by the central government, shedding light on the private expenditure incurred by students pursuing higher education. The study unveils several noteworthy observations:1. The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) for higher education across all categories stands at 26.3%. However, when excluding students from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), the GER for other categories rises significantly to 28.25%. 2. Means-based scholarship schemes exhibit a lower share compared to means cum merit and merit-based scholarship programs. 3. Students bear a substantial private expenditure, with over 65% allocated to course fees. Surprisingly, only 46% of the scholarship schemes encompass both course fees and maintenance costs. 4. Addressing the existing gaps in Indian scholarship schemes requires strategic policy adjustments: 1. The government should prioritize means-based scholarships over merit-based ones. 2. Scholarship amounts for both course fees and maintenance costs should be periodically revised every five years.3. A greater number of scholarship schemes should encompass coverage for students' course fees. By implementing these policy changes, the government can enhance the efficacy and inclusivity of scholarship schemes, ensuring a more equitable higher education landscape in India. Implementing a proposed framework for enhancing critical thinking skills in synthesizing AI-generated texts

Since the development of open and low-cost generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), the higher education community has witnessed high use of AI-generated texts in scholarly research and academic assignments, attracting ongoing debate about whether such practices constitute cheating. While scholars argue that integrating GenAI tools can enhance productivity, critics raise concerns about the negative effect of such integration on critical thinking (CrT). This study therefore proposed a framework for enhancing students’ CrT skills in synthesizing AI-generated information. The proposed framework is underpinned by various theoretical foundations, encompassing five interconnected step-wise phases (familiarizing, conceptualizing, inquiring, evaluating, and synthesizing). The study was conducted under two separate experiments. The first experiment (Study 1) validated the effectiveness of the proposed framework, providing CrT training to 179 postgraduate students. In the second study (n = 125), additional experiments were undertaken to confirm the effectiveness of the framework in different contexts. An experimental procedure involving pretest and posttest design was implemented wherein participants were randomly allocated to one of three groups: experimental group 1 (exposed to our framework), experimental group 2 (exposed to an alternative self-regulated learning framework), and a control group (exposed to a non-structured framework). Results from Study 1 revealed that the framework enhances students’ CrT skills to synthesize AI-generated texts. However, these CrT skills manifested through various rigorous training aimed at reinforcing learning. While the proposed framework holds considerable value in cultivating CrT skills, significant differences arise across various personality traits. In Study 2, the framework proved to be effective in different contexts. However, it did not make a difference, particularly in its capacity to enhance students’ self-regulated learning compared to other frameworks. We discussed the implications of the findings and recommended it to educators seeking to prepare students for the challenges of the AI-driven knowledge economy.

The future of geography field course pedagogy in UK higher education

AbstractField courses are widely regarded as integral to geography degree programmes, providing students with opportunities for experiential learning, often in unfamiliar international environments. Yet, this key area of pedagogy appears increasingly unsustainable and complex for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) within the context of the urgent need for decarbonisation, increasing financial costs, and the institutional challenges of comprehensively embedding necessary Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) considerations into these activities. Here, we report on a national‐level workshop (April 2024) that brought together a wide range of HE practitioners to discuss the future of UK field course pedagogy, using the fieldwork principles adopted by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) (RGS‐IBG) in 2020 as a basis for framing future discourse. Using a Three Horizons approach to guide our conversations, we critically explored the (un)sustainability of current academic and institutional practices, alongside future directions and ‘disrupting’ (innovative) practices for promoting transformative change in this area of education. Here, we argue for two sector‐wide discussions that require collaborative engagement with practitioners, institutions and students. Firstly, we highlight the urgent need for transparent and critical reflection on the challenges and hypocrisy of aeromobility in academia and the need for more widespread adoption of low‐carbon (‘slower’) modes of travel. Secondly, we call for the immediate reconceptualization of field course pedagogy to place EDI considerations at the core of field course design and practice, aiding a transition towards Universal Design for Learning (UDL). As such, we call on the geography community in higher education to engage in critical reflection on how we take meaningful and urgent action to address the disconnect between our stated educational values around environmental sustainability and EDI, and our actual educational practices.

Collection development is responsible for organizing and expanding collections in libraries. The main purpose of developing collections in university libraries is to meet the information needs of the academic community in higher education. This allowed the library to develop its collection in a planned manner. STIE SBI Yogyakarta Library, as a private university library, acts as an information institution to support the implementation of Tri Dharma of Higher Education. To meet the information needs of users, the library must conduct collection development and formulate policies related to collection development. This research explores the stages of the collection development process at the STIE SBI Library and provides suggestions regarding collection development policies. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and literature review. The results showed that the stages in the collection development process at the STIE SBI Yogyakarta Library are simple and have not been supported by a written collection development policy. In addition, other obstacles faced by the library include the limited number of librarians and budget. This condition is an obstacle in the implementation of collection development activities.

Personal branding strategies in online hashtag communities: the case of #AcademicTwitter

Several studies have explored the uses and benefits of social media hashtag communities in higher education… Yet, more research is needed to examine communication structures and strategies for personal branding in educational social media hashtag communities. In otherwords, to understand the dynamics, characteristics, and strategies for faculty, university staff, and graduate students need to brand themselves professionally in social media hashtag communities. This research aims to explore social network structures, dynamics, influencer characteristics, and personal branding strategies of the #AcademicTwitter online community. X (formerly known as Twitter) data on #AcademicTwitter from 2021 were retrieved and analysed using social network and quantitative content analysis. Our study found that most of the recurrent users in the community were scholars (faculty and researchers) predominantly from the STEM field. However, the most influential users were media/fan pages (a profile account created for different purposes such as sharing tips in academia, publishers, etc.) and other professionals (freelancers or university staff). Our research sheds light on the current practice of disclosing specific teaching and research interests or expertise in social media bio profiles for personal branding, especially among scholars. Unique communication contexts such as social media hashtag communities still bring challenges to the dissemination of information, relationship building, and personal branding strategies. Our results also provide recommendations for scholars (faculty and researchers), graduate students, university staff, and practitioners to improve communication practices and personal branding strategies on social media hashtag communities.

The Construction of Online Interactive Teaching Mode of Cross-border E-commerce English in Colleges and Universities under the Background of Internet

Abstract In this paper, we first constructed an online interactive English teaching model through the interaction hierarchy tower model and adopted a data-driven social cognitive network analysis approach to explore the evolutionary dynamics of cross-border e-commerce English learning communities in higher education and their potential correlation with the development of participants’ interaction patterns. Then, the online synchronous and asynchronous interaction patterns of learners are compared and integrated by extracting the characteristics of online interactive teaching learners. Finally, an instructional design for an online English for Cross-border E-commerce course was used to explore the differences and associations between online interactive teaching modes. The results show that in the teaching experiment, students have 39 nodes in the synchronous interaction network (SMN) and 34 nodes in the asynchronous interaction network (UMN), and the degree centrality and eigenvector centrality Rank=4.07 and 3.15 of the SMN are also significantly higher than those of the three interaction networks. The SMN interaction model is found to be the most efficient in the online interaction teaching process. This study helps to improve the dynamic regulation and precise guidance of the online learning process for cross-border e-commerce English, which ultimately enhances the quality of online teaching.

Students' Perceptions of the Effectiveness of the 5E Learning Cycle and Problem-Based Learning Based on TPACK in Writing Scientific Article

Writing scientific papers is unavoidable for the scientific community in higher education. As part of the scientific community, students must master the knowledge and skills of writing scientific papers. However, the reality on the ground has not shown the expected reality. Many students do not have sufficient knowledge and skills to write scientific papers. Not a few students still have shallow knowledge and skills in terms of writing scientific papers. This study examined students' perceptions of using the TPACK-based 5E-PBL learning cycle model to improve their ability to write scientific papers. The subjects of this study were 189 second-semester students who had taken Indonesian language courses at Asahan University from the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Teacher Training. The research method used was a descriptive research design with a quantitative approach. The research data was obtained by distributing surveys to all samples using the Google Forms platform, and interviews. Based on the results of the data analysis, there was a significant increase, around 51 students got very good scores, and 65 were in a good category. Thus, the effectiveness of the TPACK-based 5E-PBL learning cycle model in terms of educators (lecturers) shows a very high category (56%). While the average score showed the highest score 41% in the very high category viewed from the students’ sub-variable. In sum, students considered using the 5E-PBL learning cycle model based on TPACK for Indonesian language courses on scientific paper writing material positively impacted the learning process.

Racism in Argentine higher education. Proposals for an inclusive foreign language teacher training.

In Latin America, racism has been a problem since colonial times and is still found in higher education discriminatory practices. Contemporary racism in teacher training institutions and in foreign language career proposals is characterized by the lack of diversity in many aspects such as institutional human landscape, bibliography, language, and cultural uses. All this maintains a higher education that has traditionally produced and still produces a social reality that is non-plural, inequitable, unjust, and in need of revision. This omission of plurality needs to include strategies that link the field of higher education and excluded social groups. To this end, we suggest that service-learning could contribute to an inclusive training of foreign language teachers in an Ecology of Knowledge with other possible and necessary knowledges, ways, voices of diverse groups, so necessary for a non-racist higher education. We believe that overcoming the idea of the individual and alluding to the community, going beyond the doors of the institutions in an exchange of knowledge through practical interventions in the community beyond academicism is a practice that deserves to be further developed in higher education institutions. We propose lines of work to carry out a process of change in our teacher training programs and spaces for the construction of a better society. Service-learning is a feasible path that implies an anti-racist stance and we, the higher education community, have the imagination and qualifications required to generate and undertake this transgressive task of a collaborative and plural construction for a diverse, equitable, and just social reality.

DIGITALIZATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION

For an extended period, the higher education community has been diligently endeavoring to implement technologically advanced and more efficacious methodologies. The aim is to enhance effectiveness and cultivate a generation of graduates equipped to navigate the evolving labor market dynamics and adapt to the influences of globalization. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic significantly catalyzed the adoption of digital education, often referred to as "E-Learning," as a predominant mode of instruction across a majority of countries. This shift was necessitated by the imperative to adhere to social distancing measures and prevent the potential collapse of the educational infrastructure. In the wake of this transformative paradigm, educational institutions were compelled to engineer inventive management approaches to effectively traverse this altered landscape, marking the dawn of a new era. This era is characterized by a profound dependence on advanced technology and unfettered information accessibility as pivotal factors for sustaining and optimizing performance.This paper aims to explain the basic ideas behind managing higher education while exploring the existing research that supports these ideas. By breaking down the various aspects and tools involved, the goal is to shed light on the complex nature of managing higher education. This exploration eventually leads to an examination of how the digitalization of education impacts different functional areas of education management. Through this in-depth analysis, a clear connection emerges between the need for digitalization and the necessity to update management systems. This connection is crucial for not only achieving but also sustaining effective operation in this new era that combines technology and education.

A comprehensive data analysis of e-bike mobility and greenhouse gas emissions in a higher education community: IPBike study of case

Sustainable mobility is a goal for several countries. This kind of mobility depends not only on personal motivation but also on government actions. Encouraging people, particularly children and younger, to raise awareness of the importance and benefits of using sustainable transport, like bicycles, is crucial to developing a sustainable society. This work presents the IPBike project, a Portuguese project applied at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança. This project aims to promote the use of sustainable transport in the academic community through a rental bike program. This paper presents the results of the over three years of the IPBike project, as well as the user’s impressions and suggestions to improve the project. Moreover, a greenhouse gas emission reduction is estimated, comparing the displacement using bikes or only by cars. In general, the results achieved are promising to promote sustainable cities and plan the future since the bikes of the project are constantly rented and the user’s positive feedback, which makes the IPBikes a popular community asset. Moreover, the results demonstrate a bike-sharing program’s capacity to impact people’s lives, improve their health, reduce travel expenses, and impact society and the environment. Besides, according to the estimates, the IPBikes provided a reduction of 7% per year in the greenhouse gases emitted by the users, which means a significant reduction all over the project implantation.

An explorative qualitative study of cyberbullying and cyberstalking in a higher education community

The literature suggests an increased risk of cybervictimisation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper explores student and staff experiences in a higher education community as victims of cyberbullying and cyberstalking during the COVID-19 lockdowns. An online semi-structured questionnaire was administered to self-identified students and staff victims within a higher education context. By analysing victim responses, within a qualitative framework, this research identifies perceptions, impacts and support mechanisms. The findings offer insights for the development of effective practices and policies to mitigate risk factors and foster resilience. This research addresses the need for comprehensive understanding in the face of emerging digital challenges and future traumatic events.

How Has the Pandemic Affected Access and the Feeling of Belonging in Portuguese Higher Education?

This study is based on an in-depth analysis of the Portuguese reality. The main question addressed concerns the effects of the pandemic on the social profile and conditions of participation, and higher education students’ sense of belonging in Portugal. The changes resulting from the pandemic will also be considered in light of the policies that have been pursued and implemented at the national level with the aim of increasing and enhancing students’ integration within the higher education community. The application of a longitudinal approach was made possible through institutional data and data produced by the EUROSTUDENT project. The results obtained clarify some of the immediate effects that the pandemic has had on higher education and on the social and academic conditions and contexts of students in Portugal. On a more structural level, these results also emphasise the importance of political choices in the process of democratisation and extending the system to new segments of the population.

Sosialisasi Personal Branding dan Desain Grafis oleh Mahasiswa KKN Uniwara dalam Meningkatkan Potensi UMKM Masyarakat Di Kelurahan Tapaan Kota Pasuruan

Real Work Lecture (KKN) is a vehicle for the application and advancement of science and technology that takes place outside of school under certain time constraints, work processes, and requirements. Higher Education's Community Service Program is an effort to improve the content and quality of education for students and to gain more added value in higher education by carrying out several program activities, one of which is the socialization of personal branding and graphic design. It is envisaged that by implementing this Socialization, it will be possible to build local potential at the KKN location. The goal of this research was to discover and improve the local potential of the Tapaan Village region. The demographic and sample in this study are MSME-Practitioners and Tapaan Village business owners. Interviews, observation, and documentation were utilized to obtain data. This interview method seeks information about the SMEs that the community lives and the potential that exists in the Tapaan Village. According to the study's findings, the role of KKN is part of growing student competency as a kind of community service, particularly in Tapaan Village.

Brand posts and brand co-creation in higher education communities: a social communication process theory

ABSTRACT Creating brand posts that stimulate customer interaction in online communities is both vital and challenging to marketing managers. Using social communication process theoretical framework (i.e. SMCR), the current study examines the impact of brand posts in online brand communities on students’ responses in ways that potentially co-create value for universities and illustrate the moderating role of community types. Results show that source credibility and argument quality of online posts are positively associated with both cognitive and affective response, thus motivating brand co-creation activities, while information quantity has insignificant effect on affective response. Additionally, members of communities managed by different parties (student-created vs university-created communities) exhibit a different tendency to develop community and contribute to brand value. Thus, different digital strategies depending on the type of community host are suggested to capture the highest possible co-creation value from these communities.

One of the main criteria of the Tridharma of Higher Education by lecturers is to conduct research and publish the results of their research. The relevance of lecturers conducting investigations, research, and publishing scientific articles is raised substantially by the demands for publication by the higher education community. Referring to the Regulation of the Minister of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform, academic promotions for lecturers are required to publish their work in accredited national or international scientific journals in their fields. This rule provides direction so that scientific publications and functional positions of Lecturers in Indonesia continue to increase. The ability to publish scientific articles is very important for researchers in Indonesia. Unfortunately, many of them continue to struggle with putting together scientific publications outlining their findings and publishing them in high-quality, peer-reviewed international journals. For this reason, the PKM program in Indonesia publishes scientific articles written by students, professors, and researchers to help them improve their writing skills. There were researchers, professors, and students present from all throughout Indonesia. The seminar's attendees walked away with a wealth of information on publishing their research in high-quality international journals, thanks to this event.
