A nationwide survey of trace metals and Zn isotopic signatures in mussels (Mytilus edulis) and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from the coast of South Korea

Thirteen trace metals and Zn isotopic signatures were investigated in mussels and oysters collected from the coast of South Korea to evaluate their bioavailability in bivalve mollusks. The average Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations were 2.6–17.7 times higher in oysters than mussels, and high biota sediment accumulation factors (>30) were observed for these metals in oysters. Except for Pb in mussels, most metals had no correlation with total sediment concentrations. In oysters, Fe, V, Cu, Zn, Sn, and Pb concentrations were significantly correlated with sediments. The average values of δ66ZnIRMM3702 in mussels, oyster, and sediments were +0.09‰, +0.12‰, and −0.06‰, respectively. Soft tissues of mussels and oysters with high Zn concentrations tended to contain lighter Zn isotopes. The results indicate that oysters are a better biomonitoring organism for metal contamination than mussels and can be used in the monitoring and management of coastal environments and ecosystems.

Modeling of Bioaccumulation in Marine Benthic Invertebrates Using a Multispecies Experimental Approach.

The causal links between species traits and bioaccumulation by marine invertebrates are poorly understood. We assessed these links by measuring and modeling polychlorinated biphenyl bioaccumulation by four marine benthic species. Uniformity of exposure was achieved by testing each species in the same aquarium, separated by enclosures, to ensure that the observed variability in bioaccumulation was due to species traits. The relative importance of chemical uptake from pore water or food (organic matter, OM) ingestion was manipulated by using artificial sediment with different OM contents. Biota sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) ranged from 5 to 318, in the order Nereis virens < Arenicola marina ≈ Macoma balthica < Corophium volutator. Calibration of a kinetic model provided species-specific parameters that represented the key species traits, thus illustrating how models provide an opportunity to read across benthic species with different feeding strategies. Key traits included species-specific differentiation between (1) ingestion rates, (2) ingestion of suspended and settled OM, and (3) elimination rates. The high BSAF values and their concomitant variability across the species challenges approaches for exposure assessment based on pore water concentration analysis and equilibrium partition theory. We propose that combining multienclosure testing and modeling will substantially improve exposure assessment in sediment toxicity tests.

Organohalogenated contaminants in sediments and bivalves from the Northern Arabian Gulf

Several classes of Organohalogenated contaminants (OHCs) were determined in sediments and bivalves collected from Kuwait coast. The levels and profile of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were compared in both sediments and bivalves. PCB-153 and -138 were the major contributors towards total OHCs followed by DDT and its metabolites (DDTs). The higher contribution of DDTs (~40%) and BDE-47 (~15%) in bivalves as compared to that in associated sediments indicated high biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF). Higher BSAF (values for heavier PCBs, DDTs and PBDEs) also indicated their high accumulation potential from sediment into associated biota at most of the studied locations. Overall, OHCs in sediments and bivalves measured in current study were lower than those reported in the literature worldwide. Most of the sediment concentrations of OHCs (ng/g, dry weight) were in the range of permissible guideline values proposed by Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines (CSQGs), with few exceptions for DDTs (5ng/g) and PCBs (22.7ng/g). Similarly, 10% of bivalve samples contained high levels (ng/g, lipid weight) of PCBs (300) and DDTs (150) and were above the set safety benchmarks. This study establishes baseline for future monitoring programs.

Heavy Metal Accumulation in Lake Sediments, Fish (Oreochromis niloticus and Serranochromis thumbergi), and Crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) in Lake Itezhi-tezhi and Lake Kariba, Zambia

We measured the level of heavy metal accumulation in lake sediments, herbivorous (Oreochromis niloticus) and carnivorous (Serranochromis thumbergi) fish, and crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) from Lake Itezhi-tezhi (ITT) and Lake Kariba. We used atomic absorption spectrophotometry to quantify the levels of seven heavy metals (Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Ni). The sediment and the herbivorous fish O. niloticus accumulated a very high concentration of Cu in Lake ITT, most likely due to the discharge of Cu waste from a mining area 450 km upstream. The aquatic species we sampled in Lake Kariba had higher concentrations of Cr, Ni, and Pb relative to those in Lake ITT. This is most likely due to anthropogenic activities, such as the use of leaded petrol and antifouling agents in marine paints. Interestingly, we observed a negative correlation between the coefficient of condition (K) and Ni concentration in the crayfish hepatopancreas. Both O. niloticus and the crayfish had much higher biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF) for Cu, Zn, and Cd relative to Cr, Co, Pb, and Ni. The rank of BSAF values for O. niloticus (Cu>Cd>Zn) and C. quadricarinatus (Zn>Cd>Cu) differed from the expected ranks based on the general order of affinity of metals (Cd>>Zn>Cu).

The accumulation levels of PAHs, PCBs and DDTs are related in an inverse way to the size of a benthic amphipod (Echinogammarus stammeri Karaman) in the River Po

The accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and DDTs were investigated in gammarids captured at three sites along the middle River Po; the first was located upstream and the other two were at increasing distances downstream of the confluence of a polluted tributary, the River Lambro. Using a GC-MS technique, the levels of PCBs, PAHs and DDTs were determined separately in large and small gammarids as well as in the fine fraction of sediment samples collected along the sites of capture. Results confirm the River Lambro as a source of these chemicals to the River Po, and show that bioaccumulation differences exist between small and large individuals, the former being more contaminated particularly by PCBs and DDTs. This is likely the result of several interacting factors such as contaminant bioavailability, gammarid-size effects on kinetic parameters and feeding selectivity. The bioaccumulation patterns of PCBs and DDTs, and their higher biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF), are consistent with chemical properties and suggest a dietary disequilibrium found only 10 km downstream from the tributary, and in smaller amphipods. Present results show that gammarids may represent an additional source of contaminants, particularly of chlorinated compounds, to the many organisms feeding on them, with a higher risk for those which prey selectively on smaller gammarids.

Bioaccumulation of native polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from sediment by a polychaete and a gastropod: Freely dissolved concentrations and activated carbon amendment

The present paper describes a study on the bioaccumulation of native polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from three harbors in Norway using the polychaete Nereis diversicolor and the gastropod Hinia reticulata. First, biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were measured in laboratory bioassays using the original sediments. Median BSAFs were 0.004 to 0.01 kg organic carbon/kg lipid (10 PAHs and 6 organism-sediment combinations), which was a factor of 89 to 240 below the theoretical BSAF based on total sediment contents (which is approximately one). However, if BSAFs were calculated on the basis of measured freely dissolved PAH concentrations in the pore water (measured with polyoxymethylene passive samplers), it appeared that these BSAFfree values agreed well with the measured BSAFs, within a factor of 1.7 to 4.3 (median values for 10 PAHs and six organism-sediment combinations). This means that for bioaccumulation, freely dissolved pore-water concentrations appear to be a much better measure than total sediment contents. Second, we tested the effect of 2% (of sediment dry wt) activated carbon (AC) amendments on BSAE The BSAFs were significantly reduced by a factor of six to seven for N. diversicolor in two sediments (i.e., two of six organism-sediment combinations), whereas no significant reduction was observed for H. reticulata. This implies that either site-specific evaluations of AC amendment are necessary, using several site-relevant benthic organisms, or that the physiology of H. reticulata caused artifactually high BSAF values in the presence of AC.

Evaluation of the role of black carbon in attenuating bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from field‐contaminated sediments

The significance of black carbon (BC) for the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was examined by using historically contaminated intact sediment cores in laboratory exposure experiments with the deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis. Log values of amphipod biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were significantly related to log BC, whereas log BSAFs were related to log octanol-water partition coefficients only in background sediments containing less BC. In the background sediments, the BSAF for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was 1 to 2 for phenanthrene, with lower values for more hydrophobic PAHs, indicating an increase in nonequilibrium conditions with increasing PAH molecular size. For the near-equilibrated phenanthrene and fluoranthene, higher BSAFs were measured during exposure to background sediments, with BSAF decreasing to <0.1 in contaminated sediments in the Stockholm waterways. In situ caged mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) exhibited field BSAF values (relative to sediment-trap-collected suspended matter) for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) of 0.1 to 0.4, but for PAHs of similar hydrophobicity and molecular size, the field BSAFs were much lower and in the range 0.002 to 0.05. This PAH-PCB dichotomy is consistent with recently reported much stronger binding to diesel soot (a form of BC) for PAHs than for PCBs of equal hydrophobicities. Lower BSAFs for the near-equilibrated PAHs (phenanthrene and fluoranthene) in the urban sediments relative to the background sediments were consistent with the larger presence of BC in the urban sediments. This study provides the first linked BSAF-BC field data that supports a causal relationship between strong soot sorption and reduced bioavailability for PAHs.

Bioaccumulation of PCB Congeners by Diporeia spp.: Kinetics and Factors Affecting Bioavailability

The toxicokinetics of four polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were determined for the amphipod Diporeia spp. exposed to selected PCB congeners through both water and sediment to determine the effect of temperature and organism size (mass). For compounds with log K ow 6 or greater, the water-only uptake coefficient (k u) was inversely proportional to the size of the organism at all temperatures. For monochlorobiphenyl, k u was directly proportional to organism mass only at 16°C. Increasing temperature resulted in increasing uptake rate coefficients for all compounds except hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP) where k u did not appear to depend on temperature. The hydrophobicity of the contaminants did not contribute significantly to changes in uptake rate from water. The elimination rate constant (k e) was inversely proportional to organism size but was not significantly affected by temperature. The elimination rate constant declined exponentially with increasing log K ow. As log K ow increased, the effect of organism mass on k e was greatly reduced. The uptake from sediment was affected by temperature and the congener log K ow. At lower temperatures, the uptake coefficient from sediment (k s) declined with increasing log K ow, while at higher temperatures, it exhibited a slight upward trend. Smaller animals had much higher uptake rates from sediment than large or medium size animals. Small animals exhibited very high biota-sediment accumulation factors (5.4 to 20.8) over 4 to 16°C for HCBP (BSAF, concentration in the organism normalized to the lipid content divided by the concentration in the sediment normalized to the organic carbon content). The relationship between BSAF and log K ow was exponential for both laboratory and field data.

Accumulation of Contaminant Metals in the Amphipod Diporeia spp. in Western Lake Ontario

Sediment and amphipods ( Diporeia spp.) were collected in areas in western Lake Ontario suspected of containing a range of sediment metal contents. The total metal contents (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Fe, V, and Zn) of depurated Diporeia tissues were measured and compared to the total metal contents of the surrounding sediment. The fractional bioavailability of As, Cu, Fe, and Zn was determined in those same sediments using a sequential chemical extraction (SCE) procedure and correlated with depurated Diporeia tissue metal contents. Results of these analyses were then used to assess the ability of Diporeia to accumulate sediment metal contamination. A comparison of metal biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) and sediment metal enrichment factors (EFs) for each metal yielded separate metal groups showing different behavior for tissue accumulation. Aluminum, Cr, Fe, Ni, and V were not enriched in the sediments and were not accumulated in Diporeia tissues, while As, Cd, Cu, and Zn were enriched in the sediments and accumulated in Diporeia tissues. SCE results showed that Cu (3.2 to 8.4 %) and Zn (13 to 19 %) contents in the easily extractable sediment fractions (MgCl 2 and Na-acetate) were significantly correlated with Cu (r = 0.86; P<0.01) and Zn (r = 0.69; P<0.05) contents in depurated Diporeia tissue. In addition, Cu and Zn in Diporeia tissues are also correlated to the total sediment metal content for each respective metal (Cu: r = 0.67, P < 0.05; Zn: r = 0.66, P < 0.05). The high BSAFs for Cu and Zn, in combination with the association of tissue metal contents with easily extracted sediment metal fractions, suggest that Diporeia may be a potential bioindicator for Cu and Zn contamination in sediments.

Biomonitoring aquatic pollution with feral eel ( Anguilla anguilla) I. Bioaccumulation: biota-sediment ratios of PCBs, OCPs, PCDDs and PCDFs

Samples of sediments and eel taken from six Amsterdam freshwater sites were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated dibenzo- p-dioxins (PCDDs). Biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were determined from levels in sediments [ng/g organic matter (OM)] and eel muscle tissues [ng/g lipid weight (LW)]. Bioaccumulation patterns were both site- and analyte-specific. Bioaccumulation of these persistent organic trace pollutants in eel is discussed, considering partitioning, uptake from contaminated water (bioconcentration) and food (biomagnification), clearance, and bioavailability. Trends in bioaccumulation profiles indicated the following. Levels of PCBs, DDTs, HCB, PCDFs and PCDDs in eel tissues appeared to be exposure related since they increased with increasing levels of pollution in sediments. High BSAF values indicated that biomagnification contributed significantly to the total bioaccumulation process for PCBs, DDTs and HCB. Higher BSAF values for the higher chlorinated PCBs might be due to a more efficient biomagnification of these congeners and to a selective metabolism of the lower chlorinated congeners. Bioaccumulation of HCHs, drins and heptachlor compounds was low in eel. Bioaccumulation of PCDF and PCDD congeners was extremely low in eel. BSAF values of these congeners decreased with increasing chlorine substitution. A large variation in BSAF values for most of the hydrophobic chemicals was observed between different sites. This suggests that bioaccumulation not only depends upon type of organism and analyte, but that site-specific factors should also be taken into account. This might be due to differences in bioavailability (including desorption kinetics) of the compounds or to differences in the diet of the fish when biomagnification is involved. Estimated PCB toxic equivalent values (TEQs) were higher than calculated PCDF/ D TEQs at the reference site. The opposite was found at the most polluted site.
