Chromatographic and spectroscopic comparison of dissolved organic matter variation in anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process with tertiary filtration and membrane bioreactor

Anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process with tertiary filtration (A2OWTF) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) was compared from the perspective of dissolved organic matter (DOM) variation in this study. A2OWTF and MBR wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) samples were compared via conventional wastewater quality indexes, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra, UV–vis spectra and high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), which gradually revealed differences between the two processes from phenomena to mechanism. Lower removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by MBR phenomenally revealed its DOM removal deficiency. EEM fluorescence regional integration (FRI), EEM parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and UV–vis Gaussian deconvolution qualitatively revealed more abundant humic-like substances (HS) and more complex effluent DOM composition for MBR. HPSEC provided more quantitative characterization. As for effluent after biotreatment, MBR exhibited lower removal rates of HPSEC fractions I (mainly containing protein and polysaccharides), IV (mainly containing low molecular weight organic acids) and fractions II, III (mainly containing HS) than A2OWTF (e.g., removal rates of MBR vs. A2OWTF calculated with UV absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254): 43.6% vs. 66.2%; 5.1% vs. 67.0%; −14.4% vs. 30.8%; −5.7% vs. 36.8% respectively for fractions I, IV, II, III). The massive HS generation in MBR also led to its higher trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) for final effluent than A2OWTF. In conclusion, MBR should be prudently considered in terms of DOM removal for municipal WWTP upgrading.

Changes in structural characteristics of humic and fulvic acids under chlorination and their association with trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids formation

The effects of chlorination on 16 humic and fulvic acids (HAs and FAs, respectively) extracted from six different soil samples from Korea and two purchased soil samples (Canadian peat moss, Elliott Silt Loam Soil) were investigated to identify the changes in their structural characteristics and their effects on trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and haloacetic acid formation potential. The effect of chlorination was also investigated in fractionated samples (Aldrich HA, F1–F5) based on molecular weight (MW). Total organic carbon (TOC), specific UV absorbance (SUVA), fulvic-like fluorescence (%FLF), terrestrial humic-like fluorescence (%THLF), weight-average molecular weight (MWw), and carbon structures (13C NMR) were measured for each sample before and after chlorination, and factors relating to the chlorination mechanism were examined using principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the changes in the structural characteristics and the disinfection by-product formation of chlorinated HA and FA differed critically. For chlorinated HA, TOC and %FLF decreased due to oxidation, whereas %THLF was reduced via incorporation; MW also affected the structural changes and THMFP generation. In the PCA results, high SUVA, low MW, low N/C, and low O groups of aromatic C were associated with high THMFP production in HA, whereas low O groups of aliphatic C in FA were associated with both oxidation and incorporation in terms of THMFP. These results elucidate the mechanisms associated with the effects of chlorination in HA and FA and will support the prediction of THMFP generation in HA and FA based on their specific structural characteristics.

Photochemical release of dissolved organic matter from particulate organic matter: Spectroscopic characteristics and disinfection by-product formation potential

In this study, we investigated the photochemical release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the particulate organic matter (POM) of soil and litter leaves (broad leaves; coniferous leaves) and compared the releasing characteristics of the DOM using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. The disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) of the released DOM was also examined. Additional dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was released by UV irradiation for all POM sources (10.58 ± 2.7 mg-C L−1 g−1 for BL, 8.32 ± 2.6 mg-C L−1 g−1 for CL, and 0.20 ± 0.1 mg-C L−1 g−1 for soil). The excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis results showed that the photo-released DOM from soil was mainly humic-like components (C1, C3) produced by photodesorption, resulting in high trihalomethane formation potential, while protein-like component (C2) was the major component of the photodissolved DOM from litter leaves, resulting in high haloaceticacid formation potential. Further, DBPFP from soil and litter leaves showed high correlation with humic-like components (C1+C3) and SUVA254, respectively. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that significant amounts of DOM could be released from POM under UV irradiation, although the characteristics and DBP formation of the photo-released DOM were highly dependent upon the POM source.

Emerging disinfection by-products’ formation potential in raw water, wastewater, and treated wastewater in Thailand

Raw water (RW) from the Bangkok and Sing Buri water treatment plants located on the Chao Phraya River, river water, domestic wastewater (WW), and treated wastewater (TWW) from two wastewater treatment plants in Thailand were collected three times to investigate disinfection by-products’ (DBPs) formation potential (FP) including trihalomethane FP (THMFP), iodo-THMFP (I-THMFP), haloacetonitriles FP (HANFP), and trichloronitromethane FP (TCNMFP). High THMFP levels were observed in river water, WW, and TWW. Considering average value, the THMFP of TWW was about two times higher than that of RW. Relatively high levels of I-THMFP were found in WW and TWW. The I-THMFP of TWW was three to seven times higher than that of RW. The HANFP of TWW was one to three times higher than that of RW. High levels of TCNMFP were found in WW and TWW. TCNMFP of TWW was six to thirteen times higher than that of RW. The discharge of TWW to RW must be prevented and controlled. The moderately positive linear relationship was obtained between dissolved organic carbon and TCNMFP in TWW. Considering measured weight concentration, THMFP was found as the highest DBPs. The highest lethal concentration 50-weighted and lowest cytotoxicity-weighted concentrations of DBPs were determined for HANFP.

Seasonal variation in the nature of DOM in a river and drinking water reservoir of a closed catchment

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters used for drinking purposes can vary markedly in character depending on its source within catchments and the timing and intensity of rainfall events. Here we report the findings of a study on the character and concentration of DOM in waters collected during different seasons from Myponga River and Reservoir, South Australia. The character of DOM was assessed in terms of its treatability by enhanced coagulation and potential for disinfection by-product i.e. trihalomethane (THM) formation. During the wet seasons (winter and spring), water samples from the river had higher DOC concentrations (X¯: 21 mg/L) and DOM of higher average molecular weight (AMW: 1526 Da) than waters collected during the dry seasons (summer and autumn: DOC: 13 mg/L; AMW: 1385 Da). Even though these features led to an increase in the percentage removal of organics by coagulation with alum (64% for wet compared with 53% for dry season samples) and a lower alum dose rate (10 versus 15 mg alum/mg DOC removal), there was a higher THM formation potential (THMFP) from wet season waters (treated waters: 217 μg/L vs 172 μg/L). For reservoir waters, samples collected during the wet seasons had an average DOC concentration (X¯: 15 mg/L), percentage removal of organics by alum (54%), alum dose rates (13 mg/mg DOC) and THMFP (treated waters: 207 μg/L) that were similar to samples collected during the dry seasons (mean DOC: 15 mg/L; removal of organics: 52%; alum dose rate: 13 mg/mg DOC; THMFP: 212 μg/L for treated waters). These results show that DOM present in river waters and treatability by alum are highly impacted by seasonal environmental variations. However these in reservoir waters exhibit less seasonal variability. Storage of large volumes of water in the reservoir enables mixing of influent waters and stabilization of water quality.

Water Quality in Selected Small Drinking Water Systems of Missouri Rural Communities

Small drinking water treatment systems (serving <10,000 population) in rural communities frequently encounter multiple challenges in water quality and federal regulatory compliance, especially the disinfection byproduct (DBP) regulations, due to source water variations, limited resources, and aging infrastructures. Unlike most studies on the DBP control using synthetic water in laboratory settings, this research aimed to identify the major water quality issues confronting small systems in the state of Missouri (MO), the United States of America (USA). Three small systems were selected based on source water and geographic locations. Water samples were collected quarterly from each major treatment process during the period of May 2012 to March 2013 and analyzed to identify the treatment effectiveness and potential water quality issues in each small system. Results of water quality characterization showed that the major water quality issue in the selected small systems was the low efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal, especially the DOC species that are considered as the DBP precursors. Most collected water samples had a higher trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) maximum contaminant limit (MCL) (80 μg/L). Based on the analysis of the treatment efficiency in each system, several strategies for water quality improvement were recommended, and a few of which have been implemented in the small systems, leading to improved drinking water quality and compliance with the USEPA DBP regulations. This study would provide a valuable aid to small system operators and local water authority in context of water quality improvement and the regulatory compliance.

Application of the Coagulation Process Focusing on Humic Substances

The water source for Ogasawara village in Tokyo Prefecture has high concentrations of organic matter, color, and high trihalomethane formation potential. Therefore, the fungal breakdown of plants has produced leaf mold, which in turn has caused surface runoff to contain various humicsubstances. At the Ogiura water purification plant, a flocculant is added by a high injection ratio of 200-400mg/L for removal of humicsubstances. This research focuses on humic substances in raw water in order to develop a means of separating humic acid with pH adjustment. The result shows that humic acid of raw water for water supply and purification treatment could be reduced and that the amount of chemical used for coagulation treatment could furthermore be reduced by optimal pH and PAC injection ratio under laboratory conditions. The results should serve as useful information for improving the purification treatment in areas that use raw water containing high levels of humic substances for their water supplies.

Characteristics of DOM and Removal of DBPs Precursors across O3-BAC Integrated Treatment for the Micro-Polluted Raw Water of the Huangpu River

The aim of this study is to determine the impact upon dissolved organic matter (DOM) and removal of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors of adding an ozone-biological activated carbon (O3-BAC) process after the conventional treatment process (CTP) using water from the Huangpu River in Shanghai, east China. Several metrics, including size fractionation, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), were employed to accomplish this goal. In the raw water collected from the Huangpu River, the low molecular weight (MW) molecules (MW <3 kDa) were absolutely dominant in DOM, accounting for more than 55% of total DOC, and the DOM resulted in a high THMFP level of 472.91 ± 4.63 µg/L after an excessive chlorination. The CTP reduced high MW molecules (MW >10 kDa) by 61% and the low MW molecules (MW <3 kDa) by only 8%. The O3-BAC presented an accumulated DOC removal efficiency of approximately 50%, in particular, showing a high degree of the removal effectiveness of low MW molecules. Samplings from the CTP, ozone and BAC were subjected to excessive chlorination to determine the THMFP, and the measured concentrations were 211.89 ± 4.58 µg/L, 169.52 ± 4.55 µg/L, and 124.42 ± 4.27 µg/L, respectively. Therefore, coupled with the THMFP removal rate of 74%, the addition of the O3-BAC process after an existing CTP improved the water quality of the effluent, particularly, in terms of the improved reduction in the precursors of DBPs.

Changes in different organic matter fractions during conventional treatment and advanced treatment

XAD-8 resin isolation of organic matter in water was used to divide organic matter into the hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions. A pilot plant was used to investigate the change in both fractions during conventional and advanced treatment processes. The treatment of hydrophobic organics (HPO), rather than hydrophilic organicas (HPI), should carry greater emphasis due to HPO's higher trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP). The removal of hydrophobic matter and its transmission into hydrophilic matter reduced ultimate DBP yield during the disinfection process. The results showed that sand filtration, ozonation, and biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration had distinct influences on the removal of both organic fractions. Additionally, the combination of processes changed the organic fraction proportions present during treatment. The use of ozonation and BAC maximized organic matter removal efficiency, especially for the hydrophobic fraction. In sum, the combination of pre-ozonation, conventional treatment, and O 3-BAC removed 48% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), 60% of HPO, 30% of HPI, 63% of THMFP, and 85% of HAAFP. The use of conventional treatment and O 3-BAC without pre-ozonation had a comparable performance, removing 51% of DOC, 56% of HPO, 45% of HPI, 61% of THMFP, and 72% of HAAFP. The effectiveness of this analysis method indicated that resin isolation and fractionation should be standardized as an applicable test to help assess water treatment process efficiency.

Rapid water quality characterization for chlorine demand and THM formation in drinking waters

The quality of drinking water generally deteriorates when it is delivered through a distribution system due to the decay of disinfectant, which subsequently allows the re-growth of microorganisms in the distribution system in addition to the formation of trihalomethane (THM). Therefore, a model which describes the changes that occur in the water quality in the distribution system is needed to determine whether to enhance the treatment processes or to improve the distribution system so that microbiological criteria are met. In this paper the chlorine decay kinetics and THM formation in treated water is modeled considering the reaction of chlorine with fast and slow reacting organic and nitrogenous compounds which are present in that water. The treated water was also passed through three types of resins to fractionate very hydrophobic acids (VHA), slightly hydrophobic acids (SHA), hydrophilic charged (CHA) and hydrophilic neutral (NEU) compounds which are present in the water. Chlorine decay tests were conducted on the effluents emerging from the resins to evaluate the chlorine demand and THM formation potential of those organic fractions. The model shows that the CHA presented in the waters has a very high THM formation potential (around 62% of the THM produced). VHA, NEU and CHA contributed to chlorine demand in the water.

Effect of alum treatment on the trihalomethane formation and bacterial regrowth potential of natural and synthetic waters

Waters from five reservoirs and “synthetic waters”, prepared using terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracted from vegetation and reservoir catchment soils, were studied for their treatability with alum using a jar test procedure. DOM in drinking water is a precursor for the formation of trihalomethanes (THM) following chlorine disinfection and can also be a substrate for microbial growth in the drinking water distribution system. The trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) represents an upper concentration limit on THMs formed by chlorination, while bacterial regrowth potential (BRP) is an indicator of the bioavailability of DOM. BRP and THMFP were measured before and after alum treatment and the results were related to the source of the DOM. It was found that freshly derived terrestrial DOM in synthetic water resulted in higher THMFP and BRP than DOM in reservoir waters. For the samples investigated, conventional alum treatment did not always reduce the THM precursor levels formed in laboratory tests below the NH&MRC (1996) guideline level of 250 μg/L nor produce microbially stable waters.

Variation of organic halide formation potential of dyestuffs during ozonation and correlation with color

The control of the discharge of precursors to trihalometanes (THMs) derived from industrial wastewater is indicated to be important as well as the countermeasures in drinking water plants. Effluents containing various dyestuffs, intermediates and auxiliaries, which are typically biorefractory, are known to have high trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) as well as intense color. In this study, fourteen water‐soluble dyestuffs were ozonated to investigate the variations of total organic halide formation potential (TOXFP) and THMFP, and then correlated with color. Phenol was selected as a target compound because it had a fundamental molecular structure. The ratio of THMFP to TOXFP (THMFP/TOXFP) varied from 0.12 to 0.54 before ozonation. The variation patterns of TOXFP and THMFP were roughly divided into two groups: (1) compounds showing a maximum in the initial stage and (2) compounds showing a uniform decrease. In spite of the different variation patterns and initial values, long‐term ozonation decreased both TOXFP and THMFP. The difference in THMFP/TOXFP became slighter after ozonation. From the relationship between TOXFP, THMFP and color, long‐term ozonation, especially ozonation after decolorization was found to be necessary for the removal of organic halides.

Potsdam, New York Water Treatment Plant A Case History

Abstract The Village of Potsdam, in northern New York State, is presently building a new water treatment plant. The Village takes its water from the Raquette River. The 2.6 MGD water plant will feature ozonation as a pretreatment to coagulation, sedimentation and filtration. Raquette River water has a high trihalomethane formation potential, due to naturally-occurring organic substances. Ozonation provides a means for predisinfection without formation of trihalomethanes. The anticipated ozone dosage is 2.5 milligrams per liter sufficient ozone to impart aslight residual. Coagulation will be accomplished using aluminum sulfate and sodium alumnate. A nonionic polyelectrolyte will be used as a flocculant aid. The filter media will be Neptune-Microfloc Corp. MF 186. This treatment system was pilot plant tested with excellent results.
