High-Resolution Infrared Reflectance Distribution Measurement Under Variable Temperature Conditions.

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) can effectively characterize the reflectance properties of a target, which can be used to correct infrared remote sensing data and improve the accuracy of remote sensing measurements. When the surface temperature changes, the reflectance characteristics of the target usually change, and it is necessary to carry out BRDF measurements under variable temperature conditions. In this paper, a variable-temperature infrared BRDF measurement system based on a robotic arm is developed to realize high-resolution wide-temperature region measurement of BRDF. To improve the measurement accuracy, the shaping optical path was used to expand the laser beam, combined with the laser level to accurately adjust the three-dimensional coordinates of the robotic arm, and the dichotomy method is used to calibrate the detector nonlinearly. A portable heater suitable for the mechanical arm corner mechanism is developed, and fast and high-precision temperature control is realized by proportional integral derivative (PID) control. The specular and diffuse BRDF distributions were measured at room temperature to verify the effectiveness of the system. The BRDF distribution of SUS314 stainless steel samples with different roughness is measured during two temperature increases from 20 °C to 1000 °C, and the changing rule of BRDF under variable temperature environment is summarized, which provides technical support for evaluating the optical properties of high-temperature materials and improving the measurement accuracy of remote sensing data.

Analysis of fatigue damage of hot rolling work rolls coupled with wear effect

During the hot rolling process, the work roll experiences cyclic contact stress due to the deformation of the strip steel, as well as thermal stress from periodic heating and cooling. The surface failure of the work roll results from the combined effects of wear and fatigue damage. This study proposes a comprehensive approach to analyzing coupled wear and fatigue damage using a method based on the Manson-Coffin equation, modified slope formula, and the Miner criterion. Finite element models were developed to simulate simplified heat transfer and thermal coupling, taking into account the actual rolling parameters and high-temperature material properties of the work roll. The evolution of the physical field of the work roll during the rolling process was analyzed. The analysis of these models revealed that the maximum strain on the work roll occurred at the rolling exit and was predominantly influenced by temperature. The effects of rolling speed and temperature on work roll strain varied, with fatigue damage being significantly reduced when wear was considered compared to scenarios where wear was not accounted for, under the same number of cycles.

High-temperature material properties of type 316L stainless steel for the design of pressure boundary components subjected to 700°C coolant

The high-temperature material properties of Type 316L stainless steel (hereafter referred to as “316L SS”) were determined through a series of material tests to enable the design of pressure vessels and piping operating up to 700 °C. Currently, the only applicable design rule for 316L SS components in the high-temperature creep range is French high-temperature design standard, RCC-MRx. However, the material properties provided by RCC-MRx are limited to approximately 600 °C. In this study, new material properties and relevant design coefficients for Type 316L components subjected to 700 °C coolant were determined based on material tests including tension, fatigue and creep tests conducted on 316L SS specimens. Utilizing these supplemented properties and design coefficients, the design of pressure boundary components and piping made of 316L SS in a large-scale test facility known as TESET, subjected to 700 °C coolant, was carried out. Several large-scale sodium tests at high temperatures up to 700 °C were successfully conducted at the TESET facility, with the main components and piping designed and constructed using 316L SS.

Preparation of high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries using bamboo waste: Achieving resource recycling

Bamboo exhibits various excellent properties and is widely used in construction. However, appropriate disposal of the bamboo waste generated in a green manner is difficult. To realize resource recycling, we used a simple treatment method to prepare waste bamboo as a negative electrode material exhibiting considerable electrochemical properties for sodium-ion batteries. The electrochemical properties of high-temperature calcination materials considerably improved after impurity removal treatment using an acid solution, which was performed to eliminate the influence of impurities on electrochemical properties. However, the materials still could not meet commercial requirements. A simple pre-oxidation modification treatment enabled the introduction of O atoms into the carbon skeleton to expand the layer spacing, improved the transport kinetics of Na+ in the carbon skeleton, and further increased the platform capacity of the pre-oxidation material. The preoxidative high-temperature co-treated materials exhibited a specific charge capacity close to 280 mAh g−1 at a 0.1 C rate and a capacity attenuation of almost zero after 100 cycles, and showing a specific charge capacity of more than 150 mAh g−1 at a 2 C rate test. In the context of sustainable development, this study makes waste bamboo become a candidate of low-cost negative electrode material for sodium-ion batteries.

One-Dimensional Crystal-Structure Te-Se Alloy for Flexible Shortwave Infrared Photodetector and Imaging.

Flexible shortwave infrared detectors play a crucial role in wearable devices, bioimaging, automatic control, etc. Commercial shortwave infrared detectors face challenges in achieving flexibility due to the high fabrication temperature and rigid material properties. Herein, we develop a high-performance flexible Te0.7Se0.3 photodetector, resulting from the unique 1D crystal structure and small elastic modulus of Te-Se alloying. The flexible photodetector exhibits a broad-spectrum response ranging from 365 to 1650 nm, a fast response time of 6 μs, a broad linear dynamic range of 76 dB, and a specific detectivity of 4.8 × 1010 Jones at room temperature. The responsivity of the flexible detector remains at 93% of its initial value after bending with a small curvature of 3 mm. Based on the optimized flexible detector, we demonstrate its application in shortwave infrared imaging. These results showcase the great potential of Te0.7Se0.3 photodetectors for flexible electronics.

Study on fire temperature fields of air-supported membrane structures considering thermal–fluid–solid coupling and boundary correction

The study analyzed and compared the effects of thermal–fluid–solid coupling dynamic boundary conditions and traditional fixed-boundary conditions on the distribution of the temperature field under fires. The feasibility of simulating the temperature field distribution was confirmed by using thermal–fluid–solid coupling dynamic boundary conditions. Then, the traditional temperature field analysis methods were corrected by including a flow-based heat exchange coefficient, and the feasibility of this approach was also confirmed. The fire temperature field in a rectangular air-supported membrane structure was analyzed through parameterization. The fire temperature field model of the air-supported membrane structure was established using temperature field data fitting. Furthermore, the study explored the high-temperature material properties of P-type membranes and analyzed and compared the temperature field of the air-supported membrane structure with time-varying mechanical properties of the membrane material to that without time-varying properties.

Horizontally-oriented barium titanate@polydomine/polyimide nanocomposite films for high-temperature energy storage

High-temperature ceramics polymer dielectric nanocomposite materials have broad application prospects in energy storage. The barium titanate (BT) plays an important role as one of outstanding representative ceramics in the dielectric nanocomposite materials. However, there is little known for the effects of two-dimensional (2D) BT morphology and layout on the properties of high-temperature nanocomposite materials. Hence, 2D scale-like BT ceramic fillers were prepared from layered K0.8Li0.27Ti1.73O4 crystals as precursors using a combined solid-state and hydrothermal process. 2D scale-like BT@polydopamine (PDA) core-shell nanocomposites were prepared via coating PDA on the BT. BT@PDA/polyimide(PI) nanocomposite films were fabricated by horizontally oriented distribution of BT@PDA in the PI matrix. The BT@PDA/PI nanocomposite films exhibit a high energy density (3.34 J/cm3) and high charge-discharge efficiency (83.68 %) at 150 °C. It is currently the highest energy storage performance in the BT/PI nanocomposite films at 150 °C. The excellent properties are due to preventing upward breakdown of electrical pathways and promoting dispersion and entanglement of the electrical pathway routes. Additionally, strong electrostatic interactions between the different polymer chains (PDA and PI) restricts the movement of space charges. This work demonstrates that introducing horizontally oriented, organically shell-modified and 2D small-sized BT nanoparticles into a PI matrix is an effective method for improving energy storage performance.

High-Temperature Bending Tests of Reaction-Sintered Silicon Carbide-Based Ceramic Materials

The high-temperature strength properties of silicon carbide-based ceramic materials reaction-sintered in air and vacuum are proved by experimental data. The ultimate bending strength of pressed and cast ceramic material samples at temperatures up to 1400°C was measured as a criterion. High-temperature tests demonstrate the guaranteed strength of ceramics above 100 MPa. An example of the manufacture of a complex shaped ceramic product using the hot slip casting processing under pressure into additive water-soluble forms is given. An approval of the combined technology makes it possible to manufacture bladed ceramic elements with a thickness of about 1 mm.

Tracking maze-like hierarchical phase separation behavior in a Fe-Si-V alloy

Optimizing the properties of next-generation high-temperature and corrosion-resistant alloys is rooted in balancing structure-property relationships and phase chemistry. Here, we implement a complementary approach based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT) to ascertain aspects of hierarchical phase separation behavior, by understanding the microstructural evolution and the three-dimensional (3D) nanochemistry of a single crystal Fe79.5Si15.5V5.0 (at%) alloy. A maze-like hierarchical microstructure forms, in which a complex network of metastable disordered α plates (A2 phase) emerges within ordered α1 precipitates (D03 phase). The supersaturation in α1 (D03) precipitates with Fe and V drives the formation of α (A2) plates. The morphology of α (A2) plates is discussed concerning crystal structure, lattice misfit, and elastic strain. Phase compositions and a ternary phase diagram aid the thermodynamic assessment of the hierarchical phase separation mechanism via the Gibbs energy of mixing. A perspective on the stabilization of hierarchical microstructures beyond Fe79.5Si15.5V5.0 is elaborated by comparing hierarchical alloys. We find that the ratio of elastic anisotropy (Zener ratio) serves as a predictor of the hierarchical particles’ morphology. We suggest that the strengthening effect of hierarchical microstructures can be harnessed by improving the temporal and thermal stability of hierarchical particles. This can be achieved through phase-targeted alloying aiming at the hierarchical particles phase by considering the constituents partitioning behavior. Beyond Fe79.5Si15.5V5.0, our results demonstrate a potential pathway for improving the properties of high-temperature structural materials.

Laser ultrasonic inspection for mechanical properties of materials at high temperature

The measurement of mechanical properties of high-temperature resistant materials at high temperatures is particularly critical, and laser ultrasonic non-destructive testing technology is a prospective approach for measuring mechanical properties in high-temperature environments. Laser ultrasonic propagation models are constructed by finite element analysis, which reveals the effects of different excitation mechanisms on acoustic velocity measurements. It is found that the shear wave in the main propagation direction is hardly detected, and the distinction between shear waves and surface waves in the time domain signal is difficult. Based on the conclusions, the relationships between surface waves, longitudinal waves, and mechanical properties of materials are established by theoretical derivation. According to the propagation characteristics of surface waves and longitudinal waves, the eccentricity detection scheme of the same side and the concentricity detection scheme of the opposite side are, respectively, designed. The velocities of surface waves and longitudinal waves are measured, considering the thermal expansion coefficient and density changes with temperature. The mechanical properties of materials at different temperatures (25–1000 °C) are successfully calculated, and the experimental results are well in accordance with the reference values. It gives a reliable basis for efficient measurement of mechanical properties of materials at high temperatures.

Study on Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Rock-Compound-Additive-Modified Asphalt and Its Mixture.

Rutting is one of the most widespread and severe diseases in the service life of asphalt pavement. Enhancing the high-temperature rheological properties of pavement materials is one of the valid measures that can be used to solve rutting disease. In this research, the laboratory tests were carried out to compare the rheological properties of the different asphalts (including neat asphalt (NA), styrene-butadiene-styrene asphalt (SA), polyethylene asphalt (EA), and rock-compound-additive-modified asphalt (RCA)). Then, the mechanical behaviors of different asphalt mixtures were investigated. The results show that the rheological properties of modified asphalt with a 15% rock compound additive performed better compared with the other forms of modified asphalt. The dynamic shear modulus of 15% RCA is significantly higher than the other three asphalt binders, which is 8.2 times, 8.6 times, and 14.3 times that of the NA, SA, and EA at a temperature of 40 °C, respectively. After adding the rock compound additive, the compressive strength, splitting strength, and fatigue life of the asphalt mixtures were significantly enhanced. The results of this research have practical significance for new materials and structures to improve asphalt pavement resistance to rutting.

Novel instrumentation for high-impedance electromotive force (EMF) measurements

Instrumentation is reported for measuring electromotive force (EMF) from a high-impedance solid electrolyte-based electrochemical cell. Generally, concentration galvanic cells are used to study the high-temperature thermochemical properties of materials. The thermochemical results are determined by precise measurement of the high-impedance EMF and temperature of the electrochemical cell with suitable user interface software for data acquisition. The data are conditioned and processed using the unique design of the hardware and sent to a computer through the serial port. Online graphical displays of the data, averaging, trend viewing, and storage, are performed using a graphical user interface (GUI). The instrumentation was validated by conducting experiments with different materials using an electrochemical cell and its performance was demonstrated to be on par with commercial instruments. This work has enables low-cost sophisticated EMF measurements for determining the thermochemical properties of materials.

Hot tear prediction in large sized high alloyed turbine steel parts - experimental based calibration of mechanical data and model validation

The main defects in heavy steel castings are related to hot tear formation during solidification. Depending on the steel grade, design, and local solidification conditions, it is possible to predict regions with higher risk of hot tear formation during the casting process. However, steels containing Boron show more complex crack and defect patterns compared to common steel casting alloys. The mechanisms behind the Boron induced hot tearing is investigated in this work to understand the influence of Boron enrichment during solidification and the influence on hot tearing. The experimental work includes the investigation of phase diagrams and the corresponding fractions of the solid and liquid phases depending on temperature using thermal analysis e.g. DSC and HT-LSCM. The hot tearing sensitivity and mechanical properties during solidification are obtained in the Submerged Split Chill Test, SSCT. In addition IMC-B 3-point bending tests are performed to determine high-temperature material properties in the solid state. The work is part of a research project where the final goal is to improve the hot tear predictions based on experimental work and carry out a benchmark simulation of a real sized casting and use it to show the agreement between the numerical results and extensive non-destructive testing from industrial observations.

Determination of elevated temperature material properties by ANN-based FE model

PurposeElevated temperature material properties are essential in predicting structural member's behavior in high-temperature exposures such as fire. Even though experimental methodologies are available to determine these properties, advanced equipment with high costs is required to perform those tests. Therefore, performing those experiments frequently is not feasible, and the development of numerical techniques is beneficial. A numerical technique is proposed in this study to determine the temperature-dependent thermal properties of the material using the fire test results based on the Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based Finite Element (FE) model.Design/methodology/approachAn ANN-based FE model was developed in the Matlab program to determine the elevated temperature thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and the product of specific heat and density of a material. The temperature distribution obtained from fire tests is fed to the ANN-based FE model and material properties are predicted to match the temperature distribution.FindingsElevated temperature thermal properties of normal-weight concrete (NWC), gypsum plasterboard and lightweight concrete were predicted using the developed model, and good agreement was observed with the actual material properties measured experimentally. The developed method could be utilized to determine any materials' elevated temperature material properties numerically with the adequate temperature distribution data obtained during a fire or heat transfer test.Originality/valueTemperature-dependent material properties are important in predicting the behavior of structural elements exposed to fire. This research study developed a numerical technique utilizing ANN theories to determine elevated temperature thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and product of specific heat and density. Experimental methods are available to evaluate the material properties at high temperatures. However, these testing equipment are expensive and sophisticated; therefore, these equipment are not popular in laboratories causing a lack of high-temperature material properties for novel materials. However conducting a fire test to evaluate fire performance of any novel material is the common practice in the industry. ANN-based FE model developed in this study could utilize those fire testing results of the structural member (temperature distribution of the member throughout the fire tests) to predict the material's thermal properties.

Investigating Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Method for Evaluating High-Temperature Properties of Non-Sintered Hwangto-Mixed Concrete as a Cement Replacement Material.

Research on alternative cement materials is active worldwide, and in terms of fire safety, research on the evaluation of high-temperature properties of alternative materials is very important. Studies on concrete mixed with hwangto have been conducted by several researchers, but studies on high-temperature properties are lacking. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the mechanical properties of concrete by partially replacing cement with non-sintered hwangto (NSH) at high temperatures. Normal concrete without NSH mixing and non-sintered hwangto concrete (NSHC) with HNT replacement were prepared as the specimens. The W/B of the concrete was set to 41 and 33, whereas the NSH replacement ratio was 15 and 30% of the cement. The target heating temperatures were set to 20, 100, 200, 300, 500, and 700 °C, and the heating rate was maintained at 1 °C/min. The following were calculated to evaluate the mechanical properties of the specimens: mass loss, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and modulus of elasticity. After analyzing the correlation between residual compressive strength and UPV, we proposed a compressive strength prediction model using different values of W/B for NSHC. Experimental results suggest that mass loss (%) shows a decreasing trend as NSH increases. In terms of residual compressive strength, residual compressive strength at W/B 41 increased with NSH replacement, whereas residual compressive strength values for W/B 33 were observed regardless of NSH replacement. Residual UPV showed a similar trend, regardless of the NSH replacement ratio, and residual modulus of elasticity was low at all W/B ratios as NSH replacement increased. A linear equation with a high correlation coefficient (R2) was proposed to predict compressive strength, and the linear value of W/B 41 was slightly higher than that of W/B 33.

A Forward Identification Method for High-Temperature Stress–Strain Curves of 7075 Aluminum Alloy Sheet Considering the Necking Stage

The necking phenomenon of metal sheet under high temperatures is serious and continues over a longer duration. It is difficult to describe the high-temperature mechanical properties of materials only on the basis of hardening behavior before necking. To obtain the high-temperature stress–strain curve considering diffuse necking stage, a forward identification method based on strain measurement is proposed in this study. Here, the strain field of the minimum cross-section in the necking region of the specimen is obtained using a DIC (digital image correlation) measurement technique, and the average axial true stress–strain curve is calculated. Then, the average axial true stress–strain curve is modified using the modified Bridgeman formula. Taking 7075 aluminum alloy as an example, the high temperature equivalent stress–strain curve considering the diffuse necking stage is obtained. Compared with the traditional method, the maximum effective strain range is expanded from 0.05 to 0.8 due to the consideration of the necking stage. The obtained curve is characterized by a coupled viscoplastic–damage constitutive model and embedded in ABAQUS through the user subroutine VUMAT to simulate the hot tensile process. The relative error of force–displacement between the simulation and the experiment was 2.4%, validating the ability of the presented method. This study provides theoretical guidance and a scientific basis for the application and forming control of hot stamping processes.

Distribution and relaxation of welding residual stress in U-rib-to-deck joints considering actual material properties

Welding residual stress (WRS) adversely affects the fatigue cracking of U-rib-to-deck joints. The distribution and relaxation of the WRS of a U-rib-to-deck joint were calculated and analyzed by combining measurement and simulation and considering the inhomogeneity of the material. First, the initial WRS was simulated by using the actual high-temperature material properties of the base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM), and the simulation value was verified against measured data. Second, based on the simulated initial WRS, its relaxation was simulated using the Chaboche cyclic-plasticity constitutive model of BM and WM, and the influence of cycle number, stress amplitude, and stress ratio on WRS relaxation was investigated. The results show that the WRS relaxation changes its value but not its distribution trend. Most of the WRS relaxation occurs in the first cyclic loading, accounting for approximately 90% of the total relaxation. The relaxation increases with cycle number increasing until a stable state is reached after between seven and ten cycles. The WRS relaxation increases with stress amplitude or stress ratio increasing. Finally, a predicted equation for WRS relaxation was proposed based on the cycle number, stress amplitude, and stress ratio.

Review and discussion on fire behavior of bridge girders

This paper presents an overview on fire behavior of bridge girders mainly including prestressed concrete (PC) bridge girders and steel bridge girders. The typical fire accidents occurred on bridges are illustrated and, the seriousness of posing threats to bridge structures resulted from increasing traffic fires, specially intense hydrocarbon fires generated from petrol-chemicals, is highlighted. The current researches, embracing high-temperature properties of constituent materials, prestress state, measurement in fire tests, numerical methods, structural fire resistance, and so forth, taken on coping with problems existing in fire behavior and structural fire behavior in bridge girders are reviewed and discussed. Further, strategies for enhancing fire resistance of bridge girders followed with failure criterion and mode in types of bridge structures are provided. Future research area along with emerging trends in structural fire behavior of bridge girders is also recommended for mitigating fire hazards occurred on bridge girders. Herein, it can be attained a conclusion from review and discussion that prestressed concrete bridge girders with thin webs, specially T-shaped bridge girder, are prone to unstable under fire exposure conditions. High-strength concrete utilized in prestressed concrete bridge girders is vulnerable to spalling at elevated temperature. Steel-truss bridge girder present a more significant fragility to fire exposure compared than other steel bridge girders. • Fire behavior of bridge girders is reviewed and discussed. • Seriousness of bridge fires is highlighted. • Strategies for enhancing fire resistance of bridge girders are provided. • Fire resistance in types of bridge girders is investigated and presented. • Steel-truss bridge girders are significantly vulnerable to fire damage.
