Observed Surface Wind Field Structure of Severe Tropical Cyclones and Associated Precipitation

Using the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) dataset, this study assessed the surface wind fields from high spatial resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations, the fifth generation ECMWF reanalysis for the global climate and weather (ERA5) data and the Tropical Cyclone Winds and Inflow Angle Asymmetry (TCIAA) wind model. The results showed that SAR data are sufficient to reveal the surface wind field near a TC center and can accurately describe TC intensity and size under severe TC conditions. Then, a new, improved statistical wind structure model was set up using ERA5 data alone based on the assessment. In addition, the warm sea surface (SST > 26.5 °C) produced stronger TC wind fields and heavier precipitation. When the SST was higher (lower), the heavy rainfall was located on the left (right) side of the TC track and the strong positive correlation between wind speed and precipitation increased as the SST decreased.

Sentinel-1 SAR Backscatter Analysis Ready Data Preparation in Google Earth Engine

Sentinel-1 satellites provide temporally dense and high spatial resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The open data policy and global coverage of Sentinel-1 make it a valuable data source for a wide range of SAR-based applications. In this regard, the Google Earth Engine is a key platform for large area analysis with preprocessed Sentinel-1 backscatter images available within a few days after acquisition. To preserve the information content and user freedom, some preprocessing steps (e.g., speckle filtering) are not applied on the ingested Sentinel-1 imagery as they can vary by application. In this technical note, we present a framework for preparing Sentinel-1 SAR backscatter Analysis-Ready-Data in the Google Earth Engine that combines existing and new Google Earth Engine implementations for additional border noise correction, speckle filtering and radiometric terrain normalization. The proposed framework can be used to generate Sentinel-1 Analysis-Ready-Data suitable for a wide range of land and inland water applications. The Analysis Ready Data preparation framework is implemented in the Google Earth Engine JavaScript and Python APIs.

SAR analysis of wetland ecosystems: Effects of band frequency, polarization mode and acquisition dates

The availability of high spatial resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors with a wide range of acquisition modes has increased greatly over the past decade and contributed significantly to the study of wetland ecosystems. However, the relative influence of acquisition configurations (i.e. band frequency, polarization mode, number of acquisition dates) in wetland analysis remains poorly explored. This article investigated the relative influence of X-/C-band frequency, dual-/quad-polarization and single-/multi-acquisition features on discrimination of vegetation types in 632 ha Ramsar-protected temperate riverine marshes (Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, France). Three SAR datasets (i.e. quad-pol/C-band, dual-pol/C-band and dual-pol/X-band) were generated from five pairs of TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 images. First, a set of 25 SAR features, including backscattering coefficients and polarimetric parameters, was extracted from the SAR datasets. Second, correlation between each pair of images was calculated using the polarimetric parameter Shannon entropy to select the most similar pairs in the time series. Third, the importance of each SAR feature and modeling accuracy were calculated using a conditional random forest model for each of the three datasets. Finally, analysis of variance was performed to assess the impact of band frequency, polarization mode and number of acquisition dates on the classification of vegetation types. The results highlighted that although the time-shift of each pair of TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 images was short (3–11 days), only three pairs were sufficiently similar, highlighting the high variability in wetland ecosystems. The polarimetric parameter Shannon entropy was the most discriminating feature, regardless of the frequency or polarization. Most variance in the model accuracy was explained by the number of acquisition dates (68%), followed by the frequency (23%), while polarization explained little. This article will help select the most suitable SAR sensor acquisition modes for wetland conservation.

Polarimetric SAR Time-Series for Identification of Winter Land Use.

In the past decade, high spatial resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors have provided information that contributed significantly to cropland monitoring. However, the specific configurations of SAR sensors (e.g., band frequency, polarization mode) used to identify land-use types remains underexplored. This study investigates the contribution of C/L-Band frequency, dual/quad polarization and the density of image time-series to winter land-use identification in an agricultural area of approximately 130 km² located in northwestern France. First, SAR parameters were derived from RADARSAT-2, Sentinel-1 and Advanced Land Observing Satellite 2 (ALOS-2) time-series, and one quad-pol and six dual-pol datasets with different spatial resolutions and densities were calculated. Then, land use was classified using the Random Forest algorithm with each of these seven SAR datasets to determine the most suitable SAR configuration for identifying winter land-use. Results highlighted that (i) the C-Band (F1-score 0.70) outperformed the L-Band (F1-score 0.57), (ii) quad polarization (F1-score 0.69) outperformed dual polarization (F1-score 0.59) and (iii) a dense Sentinel-1 time-series (F1-score 0.70) outperformed RADARSAT-2 and ALOS-2 time-series (F1-score 0.69 and 0.29, respectively). In addition, Shannon Entropy and SPAN were the SAR parameters most important for discriminating winter land-use. Thus, the results of this study emphasize the interest of using Sentinel-1 time-series data for identifying winter land-use.

Time series of flood mapping in the Mekong Delta using high resolution satellite images

The Mekong Delta, located in Southern Vietnam, is one of the most affected areas in the world by climate change and sea level rises, especially flooding. Therefore, flood mapping is essential for understanding the flood regime and mitigating its impacts. Remote sensing and GIS can support the accurate and area wide evaluation of floods. In this study, high spatial resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical data were used to generate a dense satellite data time series for analysing the spatio-temporal patterns of flooding in the Mekong Delta. To derive water masks, a total of 777 Sentinel-1, 515 Sentinel-2 and 57 Landsat-8 scenes were used to generate cloud free water masks at a 10m spatial resolution in regular 10-day intervals throughout the observation period of hydrological years 2016-2017. The results show a spatial explicit information on the core zones of the seasonal flooding processes for the entire Mekong Delta and their effect of using floodwater for rice cultivation. The outcome maps provide an overall understanding of Mekong Delta flood patterns and many valuable information for policymakers and water resources managers.

Mixture Statistical Distribution Based Multiple Component Model for Target Detection in High Resolution SAR Imagery

This paper proposes an innovative Mixture Statistical Distribution Based Multiple Component (MSDMC) model for target detection in high spatial resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Traditional detection algorithms usually ignore the spatial relationship among the target’s components. In the presented method, however, both the structural information and the statistical distribution are considered to better recognize the target. Firstly, the method based on compressed sensing reconstruction is used to recover the SAR image. Then, the multiple component model composed of a root filter and some corresponding part filters is applied to describe the structural information of the target. In the following step, mixture statistical distributions are utilised to discriminate the target from the background, and the Method of Logarithmic Cumulants (MoLC) based Expectation Maximization (EM) approach is adopted to estimate the parameters of the mixture statistical distribution model, which will be finally merged into the proposed MSDMC framework together with the multiple component model. In the experiment, the aeroplanes and the electrical power towers in TerraSAR-X SAR images are detected at three spatial resolutions. The results indicate that the presented MSDMC Model has potential for improving the detection performance compared with the state-of-the-art SAR target detection methods.

Determining Rice Growth Stage with X-Band SAR: A Metamodel Based Inversion

Rice crops are important in the global food economy, and new techniques are being implemented for their effective management. These techniques rely mainly on the changes in the phenological cycle, which can be investigated by remote sensing systems. High frequency and high spatial resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors have great potential in all-weather conditions for detecting temporal phenological changes. This study focuses on a novel approach for growth stage determination of rice fields from SAR data using a parameter space search algorithm. The method employs an inversion scheme for a morphology-based electromagnetic backscattering model. Since such a morphology-based model is complicated and computationally expensive, a surrogate metamodel-based inversion algorithm is proposed for the growth stage estimation. The approach is designed to provide estimates of crop morphology and corresponding growth stage from a continuous growth scale. The accuracy of the proposed method is tested with ground measurements from Turkey and Spain using the images acquired by the TerraSAR-X (TSX) sensor during a full growth cycle of rice crops. The analysis shows good agreement for both datasets. The results of the proposed method emphasize the effectiveness of X-band PolSAR data for morphology-based growth stage determination of rice crops.

Attribute Learning for SAR Image Classification

This paper presents a classification approach based on attribute learning for high spatial resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. To explore the representative and discriminative attributes of SAR images, first, an iterative unsupervised algorithm is designed to cluster in the low-level feature space, where the maximum edge response and the ratio of mean-to-variance are included; a cross-validation step is applied to prevent overfitting. Second, the most discriminative clustering centers are sorted out to construct an attribute dictionary. By resorting to the attribute dictionary, a representation vector describing certain categories in the SAR image can be generated, which in turn is used to perform the classifying task. The experiments conducted on TerraSAR-X images indicate that those learned attributes have strong visual semantics, which are characterized by bright and dark spots, stripes, or their combinations. The classification method based on these learned attributes achieves better results.

30 GHz Linear High-Resolution and Rapid Millimeter Wave Imaging System for NDE

High-resolution millimeter-wave imaging for nondestructive testing applications offers certain unique and practical advantages. Traditionally, imaging for this purpose is performed by raster scanning a single probe/antenna across a two-dimensional (2D) grid. Raster scanning requires bulky, slow and expensive scanning platforms, in addition to being a slow process. Utilizing an array of probes significantly reduces these limitations. This paper presents the design of a linear one-dimensional millimeter wave imaging array operating at 30 GHz and capable of rapid image production. The imaging array is 150 mm long, operates in quasi-mono-static reflection mode, and provides coherent vector reflection coefficient data for generating high spatial resolution synthetic aperture radar images. This imaging array performs fast electronic scan along one dimension and may be readily moved along the other direction to produce 2D images, greatly reducing the required scan time compared to raster scanning. The design and utility of this imaging array along with several imaging examples are presented in this paper.
