The mediating roles of academic self-efficacy and learning interest in the relationship between teaching style and math behavior engagement among junior high school students in China.

Teacher guidance can positively impact students' learning interest and mathematical behavior engagement. As a crucial part of classroom teaching, effective teaching styles play an indispensable role in middle school students' mathematical behavior engagement. This study addresses the gap in understanding how different teaching styles influence junior high school students' math behavior engagement in China, by examining the underexplored mediating roles of academic self-efficacy and learning interest in this relationship, which are critical yet often overlooked factors in fostering student engagement and improving educational outcomes in mathematics. Students from grades 7 to 9 in six middle schools in Jiangsu Province, China participated in the survey. The results indicate that: (1) academic self-efficacy mediates the relationship between effective teaching styles (humorous and lively style, rigorous and logical style, caring and sharing style) and mathematical behavior engagement among Chinese middle school students; (2) math learning interest mediates the relationship between effective teaching styles (humorous and lively style, rigorous and logical style, caring and sharing style, innovative and exploratory style) and mathematical behavior engagement among Chinese middle school students. Recommendations include encouraging teachers to adopt diverse teaching styles that foster both self-efficacy and interest.

The construction of a physical literacy assessment index system for junior high school students: a Chinese study

In recent years, the internalisation of education in China has led to an increase in the prevalence of a highly competitive, test-focused approach to learning. This has had a detrimental impact on the physical health and wellbeing of children and adolescents in China, resulting in a concerning lack of physical literacy among junior high school students. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to construct an evaluation index system for physical literacy in junior high school students with Chinese characteristics, quantify the relative importance of each domain, and provide a framework for students to assess and self-evaluate the sustainable development of their physical literacy. The indicator system was modelled on CAPL-2, and valid indicators were extracted from the literature. A pre-selected indicator system for physical literacy in junior high school students was constructed through three rounds of Delphi expert questionnaire surveys (48 questionnaires were distributed in total). A total of 16 experts participated in all three rounds of the surveys until a consensus was reached on the indicators, resulting in the establishment of a hierarchical analysis-based theoretical model. This was developed using the experts’ opinions and determined the items to be subdomains and weights. The AHP was employed to ascertain the relative importance of the subdomains and items within the assessment system. The index weight scores of the Chinese junior high school students’ physical literacy assessment index system are aligned with the core tenet of the physical literacy concept, comprising four primary indicators, eight secondary indicators, and 26 tertiary indicators. The weights of the physical literacy evaluation indexes for junior high school students in China were calculated using the AHP to establish a progressive hierarchical model and the consistency test. The primary indicators were found to be in the following order of importance: Physical Competence (29.82%) > Motivation and Confidence (29.64%) > Knowledge and Understanding (20.27%) = Daily Behavior (20.27%). The system is an effective means of evaluating the impact of physical activity and health promotion among junior high school students, and it effectively addresses the needs of this age group in these areas. It provides a comprehensive assessment of the effects of physical activity and health promotion among junior high school students, and it offers a scientific foundation for the development of precise and individualized physical activity and health promotion programs.

Is prior bullying victimization associated with subsequent bullying perpetration? A theoretical framework based on the Threat-Motivation model.

Bullying among adolescents is a global public health issue prevalent in schools, posing significant risks to positive adolescent development. Studies have shown that bullied adolescents tend to engage in more bullying perpetration, but this underlying process of longitudinal correlation has not been fully elucidated. Based on two waves of longitudinal data collected from 347 junior and 144 senior high school students in China (Mage = 13.66 years, SDage = 1.46, 59.27% boys) at 1-year intervals, two moderated chain-mediation models were used to explore the longitudinal correlations between bullying victimization and bullying perpetration and its underlying processes. The results found a significant positive correlation between adolescents' bullying victimization experiences 1 year prior and bullying perpetration 1 year later. Furthermore, fear of negative evaluation and psychache played a longitudinal chain-mediating role in the process, with self-esteem and grade moderating this mediating pathway, either enhancing or weakening the effect. This study demonstrates that prior bullying victimization is longitudinally and positively associated with subsequent bullying perpetration among adolescents. This process is mediated by fear of negative evaluation and psychache, with self-esteem and grade level as moderators. Based on these conclusions, we have formulated the Threat-Motivation Model, offering a framework to understand the relationship between bullying victimization and bullying perpetration. Practical implications, including strategies to reduce bullying in youth groups, are discussed.

The relationship between childhood trauma and mental health status among Chinese vocational high school adolescents: the mediating effect of poor self-control and internet addiction

BackgroundMental health problems among adolescents are a common concern globally. However, its relationship with childhood trauma is not clearly understood from the existing studies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationships among childhood trauma, mental health, self-control, and internet addiction in Chinese vocational high school students.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted among vocational high school students in China from October 2020 to December 2020. Standardized questionnaires were used to collect basic information regarding childhood trauma, self-control, psychological state, and social demographics. A structural equation model was used to study the relationships among internet addiction, self-control, childhood trauma, and mental health.ResultsA total of 3368 individuals participated in the study. The results revealed the mediating effects of poor self-control and internet addiction on the association between childhood trauma and mental health.ConclusionsInternet addiction and low self-control play mediating roles in childhood trauma and mental health. Clarifying these relationships will help formulate better-targeted interventions to improve the mental health of Chinese vocational high school students and aid in interventions to treat and prevent mental health problems.

Investigation of the Effectiveness of TRIZ Invention for Enhancing Design Creativity in High School Students in China: The role played by teacher self-efficacy

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of creative problem solving methodologies, such as TRIZ, in boosting design creativity in high school students in China, considering the role of the teachers’ self-efficacy in implementing such interventions. Design/methodology/approach –The study employs an experimental or quantitative research methodology to systematically assess the efficacy of the TRIZ intervention and explore the factors characterizing the integration of creative applied methodologies into educational practice. Results demonstrate a significant increase in students' design creativity following the TRIZ intervention, as evidenced by pre- and post-intervention assessments. Findings – The study reveals a strong correlation between teacher self-efficacy and the effective implementation of TRIZ. Teachers with high self-efficacy in teaching TRIZ were more likely to create learning environments that enhanced student creativity, thereby maximizing the intervention's impact. Conversely, teachers with lower self-efficacy showed resistance to incorporating TRIZ into their teaching practices, potentially compromising its effectiveness. This study demonstrates the significant potential of the TRIZ methodology for enhancing the design creativity of high school students in China. Research limitations– The study has limitations because of its geographical concentration on the Chinese students and teachers. Future research could look into additional regions to validate this notion. Practical implications – For effective implementation of TRIZ, teachers should prepare their teaching material that incorporates TRIZ principles systematically.

The relationship between explicit and implicit educational values and learning burnout among senior high school students

This study aimed to demonstrate the relationship between explicit and implicit educational values and learning burnout among senior high school students in China. Using stratified cluster sampling, 768 students from six high schools participated in a survey on explicit educational values and learning burnout. The Single Category Implicit Association Test (SC-IAT) explored students’ implicit attitudes toward educational values. The results showed that an emphasis on economic benefit was placed first among all explicit educational values. In contrast, the external value of education was more likely to be recognized in implicit educational values. Explicit and implicit educational values were significantly negatively correlated with learning burnout. However, there were no significant correlations between the explicit and implicit educational values, suggesting that the two belong to relatively independent psychological structures.

Predicting non-suicidal self-injury among Chinese adolescents: The application of ten algorithms of machine learning

Background and aimsHigh non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) prevalence among adolescents is a global health issue. However, current prediction models for adolescent NSSI rely on a limited set of algorithms, resulting in biased predictions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop multiple machine learning models to enhance prediction accuracy and mitigate biases among Chinese adolescents. MethodsA total of 4487 junior and senior high school students in China were recruited. Multiple algorithms were included, such as logistic regression, decision tree, support vector machine, Naive Bayes, multi-layer perceptron, K-nearest neighbors, and ensemble learning algorithm like random forest, bagging, AdaBoost, and stacking to build predictive models. Data processing techniques, including standardization and the synthetic minority oversampling technique, were employed to optimize the predictive model. The model was trained on 70 % of the data, reserving 30 % for testing. ResultsThe ten prediction models achieved a good performance, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) scores above 0.700 in the test set. The stacking and random forest models achieved AUC scores of 0.904 and 0.898, respectively. The prediction performance of the Naive Bayes model was relatively poor. The top five important variables were resilience, bully, suicidal ideation, internet addiction, and depression. ConclusionsThe ensemble machine learning algorithm showed promising results predicting NSSI among adolescents. Such algorithms should be recommended for future NSSI research to enhance predictive accuracy. Identification of important features in NSSI prediction can help develop screening protocols and lay a foundation for clinical diagnosis and intervention in adolescent populations.

Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices and Student Attitude Towards Learning the English Language in China

This study investigated the relationship between culturally responsive teaching practices and student attitudes towards learning English language among senior high school students in China. The study used a descriptive-comparative correlational design and a survey questionnaire to collect data from 491 students from five different schools. The study found that the level of culturally responsive teaching practices perceived by students was average and that there was no significant difference in the level of culturally responsive teaching practices based on the students' demographic factors. The study also found that the students had positive attitudes towards learning the English language and that there was a significant positive relationship between culturally responsive teaching practices and student attitudes. The study concluded that culturally responsive teaching practices can enhance student motivation and academic achievement in English language learning and recommended the development of professional development programs and curriculum materials that support culturally responsive teaching.The findings of culturally responsive teaching practices show that all measured dimensions-Diverse Teaching Practices, Cultural Engagement, Diverse Language Affirmation, Self-Efficacy, Outcome Expectations, and overall, Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices-are "evident". Among these, Diverse Teaching Practices and Diverse Language Affirmation have the highest values, indicating a strong presence in the educational setting.The findings of students' attitudes toward learning the English language reveal that all aspects measured are "very positive". The dimensions assessed include Attitude towards English Speakers, Integrative and Instrumental Orientation, Interest in English, Attitude towards English Class, and Attitude towards English Teacher. The highest mean score is observed for Attitude towards English Teacher, closely followed by Interest in English, indicating that students hold their teachers in high regard and have a strong interest in the language itself. Attitude towards English Speakers and Integrative and Instrumental Orientation both have the same level, reflecting very positive attitudes toward English-speaking individuals and the practical as well as intrinsic motivations for learning the language. Attitude towards English Class has a slightly lower but still very positive mean. Collectively, these findings suggest that students maintain a highly favorable attitude towards all aspects of learning English, which is crucial for fostering an effective and engaging learning environment.

How well does nature contact promote academic achievement in geography? The serial multiple mediating effects of sense of place and geospatial thinking

ABSTRACT Current studies emphasise that nature plays a key role in geography education. However, little research has been devoted to elucidating the underlying mechanisms by which nature contact (NC) influences academic achievement. With the aim of filling this gap, this study provides a serial multiple mediator model that examines how contact with nature promotes academic achievement in geography (AAG) and is further associated with the serial multiple mediating effect of students’ sense of place (SOP) and geospatial thinking (GT). A self-report questionnaire was administered to 885 senior high-school students in China. The results indicated that the positive association between NC and students’ AAG was not only mediated by an SOP and GT but also serially mediated by an SOP and GT. The findings and details are valuable for educational researchers and practising teachers, as they extend our understanding of the factors influencing AAG and how they correlate with geography learning processes.

Vortex of regret: How positive and negative coping strategies correlate with feelings of guilt

Bad coping behavior and guilt may reinforce each other as a negative feedback loop. Social contexts and expectations may also create cognitive dissonance in coping individuals and affect the effectiveness of coping styles. This study examines the associations between the feeling of guilt and specific coping styles belonging to both groups of positive and negative coping styles. We conducted Bayesian Multiple Regression analyses on secondary data from 3784 high school students in China. Positive coping is associated more with reduced feelings of guilt compared to negative coping. However, some positive coping styles were found to be positively associated with a sense of guilt, especially those involving confrontation against or conformity to social expectations. Most negative coping styles are positively associated with guilt, and substance use has the strongest influence among the examined negative coping styles. The findings suggest that the consideration of sociocultural contexts is very important in supporting those with guilt issues, especially adolescents in societies with dominant traditional East Asian values.

Teacher and family support, teacher–student relationship, and psychological capital in online learning: A moderated mediation model

This research examined the impact of teacher support on students' psychological capital during the process of online learning, and investigated the mediating effect of the teacher–student relationship and the moderating role of family support. For this purpose, 577 junior high school students in China completed a survey. The findings revealed a positive relationship between teacher support and students' psychological capital. Moreover, teacher–student relationships mediated the influence of teacher support on students' psychological capital. Furthermore, family support moderated the link between teacher support and teacher–student relationships. These results have practical implications for guiding teachers' efforts in the online learning environment, facilitating teacher support, and providing more effective assistance to students who have little family support.

Physical activity and school adaptation among Chinese junior high school students: chain mediation of resilience and coping styles.

As a crucial juncture in students' educational journey, junior high school presents challenges that profoundly influence well-being and academic performance. Physical activity emerges as a pivotal factor shaping the holistic development of junior high school students. Beyond its recognized impact on physical and mental health, engaging in regular physical activity proves effective in augmenting students' adaptability to school life. Despite its importance, the mechanisms through which physical activity influences school adaptation in junior high school students remain understudied in academic research. In exploring the potential mechanisms, this study aims to validate the mediating roles of resilience and coping styles by examining the association between physical activity and school adaptation among junior high school students. This study employed cross-sectional survey approach among junior high school students in China. Through the convenience sampling, 1,488 participants aged from 12 to 16 years old (Average age = 13.59, SD = 1.017) from two Junior high schools in Changsha City, Hunan Province were recruited to complete the Physical Activity Scale, School Adaptation Questionnaire for Junior High School Students, Resilience Scale for Adolescents, and Simple Coping Styles Questionnaire. For data analysis, the SPSS 26.0 and Amos 26.0 were used for statistical processing. The results showed that physical activity exhibited a significant correlation with school adaptation (r = 0.656, p < 0.001). Resilience, positive coping style and negative coping style played partial mediating roles between physical activity and school adaptation, with the effect size were 0.229, 0.170, 0.171. The chain mediation effect size of resilience and positive coping style was 0.042, while the chain mediation effect size of resilience and negative coping style was 0.050. Physical activity positively predicts Chinese junior high school students' school adaptation through resilience and coping styles, suggesting that junior high school students should engage in regular physical activity, so as to improve their resilience and positive coping styles, mitigating negative coping styles, thus promoting their school adaptation.

Association Between Frequency of Muscle-Strengthening Exercise and Depression Symptoms Among Middle and High School Students: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

Existing literature on the association between the frequency of muscle-strengthening exercise (MSE) and depression among adolescents is limited and contradictory. This study aimed to elucidate the association of MSE frequency with depression symptoms among middle and high school students in China. A total of 27,070 students in grades 7-12 from 376 middle and high schools were surveyed using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire between April and June 2022. Information on engaging in MSE was self-reported, and depression symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Poisson regression was used to examine the association between MSE frequency and depression symptoms. Among the 27,006 eligible students, 51.6% (n=13,933) were boys, and the mean age was 15.6 (SD 1.7) years. The overall prevalence of meeting MSE recommendations (ie, engaging in MSE ≥3 days/week) was 34.6% (95% CI 32.6%-36.6%; n=9145); the prevalence was higher in boys (43.8%, 95% CI 41.8%-45.8%; 6067/13,933) than in girls (24.3%, 95% CI 22%-26.6%; 3078/13,073; P<.001). A total of 5882 (21.8%) students reported having depression symptoms. After adjustment for sociodemographic status, lifestyle factors, academic performance, and experience of physical fighting, compared to students who did not engage in MSE, the prevalence ratios (PRs) for depression symptoms were 0.98 (95% CI 0.97-0.99) for those engaging in MSE once a week, 0.95 (95% CI 0.93-0.97) for 2 days/week, 0.93 (95% CI 0.90-0.96) for 3 days/week, 0.90 (95% CI 0.87-0.94) for 4 days/week, 0.88 (95% CI 0.84-0.93) for 5 days/week, 0.86 (95% CI 0.81-0.92) for 6 days/week, and 0.84 (95% CI 0.78-0.90) for 7 days/week, respectively. The overall prevalence of meeting MSE recommendations among Chinese adolescents is low. The frequency of MSE was inversely associated with depression symptoms.

The Healthy Context Paradox Between Bullying and Emotional Adaptation: A Moderated Mediating Effect.

Bullying is a significant concern for young people, with studies consistently showing a link between bullying and negative emotional consequences. However, the mechanisms that underlie this association remain unclear, particularly in terms of the classroom environment. This study aimed to explore the paradoxical phenomenon between bullying victimization and emotional adaptation among junior high school students in China, using the hypothesis of the healthy context paradox. The study involved 880 students (565 girls; Mage=14.69; SD=1.407 years), and data were collected using self-reported surveys. The findings of the study, utilizing multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) techniques, demonstrated a cross-level moderated effect of classroom-level bullying victimization on the relationship between individual bullying victimization and emotional adaptation. Specifically, the results indicated that in classrooms with higher levels of victimization, the association between individual bullying victimization and increased depressive symptoms and State&Trait anxiety was more pronounced. These findings support the "Healthy context paradox" hypothesis in the Chinese context and provide insight into the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. The results suggest that the classroom environment plays a crucial role in shaping the emotional consequences of bullying and that addressing classroom victimization is crucial for promoting emotional health among young people. By understanding the mechanisms that underlie the association between bullying and emotional consequences, interventions can be developed to target the underlying factors that contribute to this paradoxical phenomenon. Overall, the study provides new insights into the complex relationship between bullying and emotional health among young people, highlighting the importance of considering the classroom environment in addressing this issue.

The college entrance examination is a standard reference examination for high school students in China after completing the basic learning stage. Its purpose is to comprehensively check whether the students who have completed the high school courses have met the requirements stipulated in the syllabus. After years of practice, it has become one of the most authoritative examinations in China. [1] In recent years, many colleges and universities have paid great attention to the CET-4 test, and most have linked the CET-4 test with a bachelor’s degree. Students cannot get the CET-4 certificate in universities, and the schools will not award bachelor’s degrees to the students. China’s College entrance examination and CET-4, as two of the most objective level examinations in China, have strong reliability and validity in the field of English learning and have a certain continuity over the years, which can objectively and honestly reflect the English learning level of students from high school to college. [2] The English score of the college entrance examination can also reflect the English level of first-year college students when they first enter school. While CET-4 represents a student’s English level at the university level.

Childhood adversities and psychotic symptoms among high school students in China: The role of dissociation

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for psychotic symptoms. This study replicated the relationship between ACEs and positive symptoms of psychosis in the Asian context and explored the moderating effect of dissociation. We analyzed data from 1439 high school students in China who completed validated measures of ACEs, positive symptoms of psychosis, and dissociative symptoms. The positive relationship between ACEs and psychotic symptoms was confirmed in our sample (r =0.244, p <0.001). Among different ACEs, childhood emotional neglect (β =0.139, p <0.001) and emotional abuse (β =0.125, p <0.001) had the strongest relationship with psychotic symptoms. Dissociative symptoms were also found to be a statistically significant moderator. We provide cross-cultural evidence for the relationship between ACEs and psychotic symptoms. Dissociative symptoms may exacerbate such effects. These results highlight the importance of child protection to prevent psychotic symptoms. Individuals with higher levels of dissociation may be at higher risk of developing psychotic symptoms when exposed to adversities. A trauma-informed approach to addressing psychotic symptoms in the community is recommended.

Perceived Social Support and Experiential Avoidance in Adolescents: A Moderated Mediation Model of Individual Relative Deprivation and Subjective Social Class

Based on the integration of ecological systems theory and the risk and protective factor model, the current study tested whether individual relative deprivation mediated the association between perceived social support and adolescents’ experiential avoidance and whether this mediation model was moderated by subjective social class. A sample of 582 senior high school students in China participated in the current survey. The results indicated that perceived social support was negatively related to the students’ experiential avoidance. Mediation analysis showed a significant indirect effect of perceived social support on experiential avoidance, via individual relative deprivation. Moreover, the mediation effect of individual relative deprivation was moderated by subjective social class. Specifically, the negative relationship between perceived social support and individual relative deprivation, and the direct relationship between perceived social support and experiential avoidance were stronger for adolescents with low subjective social class. In contrast, the positive relationship between individual relative deprivation and experiential avoidance was stronger for adolescents with high subjective social class.
