A mathematical diet model

Emphasis on problem solving and mathematical modeling has gained considerable attention in the last few years. Connecting mathematics to other subjects and to the real world outside the classroom has received increased attention in mathematics programs. This article describes an application of simple differential equations in the field of dietetics as it may be presented to a calculus class or a high school mathematics club. The problem arose as a natural question about life and a mathematical model was developed to give a reasonable solution to this.

The Art of Teaching: Junior High School Mathematics Clubs

Very little was done with junior high school mathematics club work prior to 1930 but, in the last decade, this project has been introduced to many classroom groups of young persons of junior high school age. Much enthusiasm for the work entailed has been shown by the pupils concerned and much benefit has been reaped by those participating actively in this type of school club work. For greatest success the work of each particular junior high school mathematics club must be planned to meet the general interest of the pupils concerned and attuned to their average ability. Suggestion for the organization of such a club may come logically from the mathematics teacher and a proper presentation of the project to the class can produce a club of self-chosen members enthusiastically awaiting the enjoyment of many mathematical treats.

Fellow Students of Mathematics: A wise old observer has remarked that there is as much difference in folks as there is in anybody. Take the cases of A and B. These impersonal names are used for typical members of any mathematics class. A (Alice or Arthur) comes to the teacher with the request “Can't you find us some harder originals? Even father could do all that you assigned for last night.” B (Betty or Bernard) closes the book just before recitation and sighs audibly “There, if he calls on me early and lets me alone, I can prove his parallelograms equal but, if he makes me stop to give reasons, I'm sunk.” Scattered between A and B are the other members of the class, not so ambitious as to want to do much more than was called for, and not so stupid as to believe that mathematics can be mastered by memorizing a textbook. This talk is an attempt to show that a well-conducted mathematics club will have something of value for all kinds of pupils.

Sources of Program Material and Some Types of Program Work Which Might Be Undertaken by High School Mathematics Clubs

The following suggestions for work of high school mathematics clubs are listed under seven headings: (1) Projects; (2) Demonstrations and Experiments; (3) Skits, Plays, and Dialogues; (4) Games; (5) Field Trips and Field Work; (6) Outside Speakers; and (7) Topics for Group or Individual Presentation. A project may be initiated and carried forward in addition to a diversified or unified program meeting if desired. Such projects can aid in allowing the club work to parallel and grow out of curricular work.

In most of our high schools our courses of study are too crowded with formal work to permit our following, in the class room, interesting by-ways which touch our paths. Such is the case in mathematics. It is largely because of the failure of teachers to provide opportunity for exploring these mysterious by-ways that many high school pupils regard mathematics as a necessary evil, as something almost entirely apart from every day life, as an affliction to be escaped as soon as the minimum requirement has been met. But work that has been considered drudgery may become a pleasurable pastime with the proper incentive. Some one has fittingly said that the greatest problem to be solved by the mathematics teacher today is the problem of making mathematics interesting to the pupil. The mathematics club offers a means of helping to solve this problem.
