Cultural Persons’ Representations in High School English Language Teaching Materials in Indonesia

Integrating both local and target cultures in English Language Teaching Materials and emphasizes the need for balance to promote cultural diversity and understanding become an important thing in today’s era. During teaching practice activities at SMAN 17 Tebo, the researcher found that the cultural materials in the English Teaching Materials used are not balanced between the source culture, target culture, and international culture. This has an impact on cross-cultural understanding and less than optimal cultural awareness among students. The purpose of this research is to explore the representation of cultural persons in government textbook and teacher-made modules. This research uses qualitative content analysis as a research design. This research involved a sample of government-approved English language textbooks entitled “Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress” and a teacher-made module at SMAN 11 Tebo. The results show that from the theme of great athletes in chapter one of the Bahasa Inggris Work In Progress textbook and teacher-made module, it can be seen that the dominant sports branch comes from international culture. While the cultural persons represented as athletes are dominated by the source culture. It is recommended that future development of English language teaching (ELT) materials, both in government textbooks like Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress and teacher-made modules, should strive for a more balanced representation of source culture, target culture, and international culture for fostering intercultural competence among Indonesian students.

The paper outlines the meaning and significance of the English Learning Activity View and analyses the concept of writing teaching based on the English learning activity view. Take Summer Camp Helpers Wanted, a writing board in the selective compulsory for Launching Your Career of the Public Version of High School English (2019 Edition) as an example, explore how to implement the English learning activity view in high school English writing teaching, that is, to introduce the topic before writing to stimulate the students' interest in writing; to cultivate the students' higher-order thinking during writing;and to cultivate the students’ ability to evaluate each other in high school from the perspective of English learning activities. It is argued that teachers should actively establish correct teaching concepts and optimize the teaching design by applying the English Learning Activity View to effectively improve students’ language proficiency, thinking ability, cultural awareness and learning ability, thus improving students’ core literacy of English.

The Influencing Factors of High School English Teachers Choosing Different Teaching Media

The issue of high school English teachers' selection of teaching media has garnered widespread attention. However, there remain significant gaps in understanding the influencing factors. This paper analyzes the determinants behind teachers' choices using grounded theory and three-level coding, incorporating interviews with educators from both first-tier cities and county towns in China. The findings reveal substantial disparities in resource availability, technological proficiency, and institutional support between urban and rural schools. Urban teachers benefit from abundant resources and robust technical support, which facilitate higher technological proficiency and more effective media integration with curriculum goals. Conversely, rural teachers face challenges with basic access to technology and limited professional development opportunities. Based on these findings, this paper proposes several recommendations to optimize the use of teaching media: enhancing resource availability through increased funding and community support, improving technological proficiency via targeted professional development, strengthening school support with dedicated IT staff and flexible funding policies, and aligning media with curriculum needs to enhance student engagement.

Research on the Challenges and Pathways to Improve the Effectiveness of High School English Teaching in the Era of Artificial Intelligence

In the era of artificial intelligence, curriculum standards are constantly changing, and higher requirements are placed on students. Due to the constant availability of time, classroom efficiency must be significantly improved. How to improve classroom efficiency and help students achieve higher abilities within a limited time has become a core issue in the education industry. This study aims to explore the challenges in high school English teaching based on the complexity of the English knowledge system, as well as how current artificial intelligence technology can maximize its auxiliary functions. This article mainly analyzes the challenges and path research of improving the effectiveness of high school English teaching under the background of artificial intelligence. It mentions three challenges: low-level motivation of students, low-level work motivation of teachers, and imbalanced use of artificial intelligence, and proposes corresponding solutions, such as using artificial intelligence to provide personalized feedback, using AI-assisted teaching to help teachers enrich teaching forms and reduce burden, and strengthening cross-cultural communication between AI and English, striving to develop more functions of AI that can be used for English teaching.

How to Improve the High School Students' Foreign Language Enjoyment?

Foreign language enjoyment (FLE) has been the cornerstone of the recent positive psychology in foreign language (FL) learning movement. Introduced by Dewaele and MacIntyre (2014), FLE can be defined as a broad positive emotion experienced by FL learners when their psychological needs are met in the FL classroom. It represents the first foray into quantifying positive emotions in FL research since it was introduced in 2014. In recent years, many scholars have linked positive psychology with education and teaching to explore the impact of positive psychology on students' learning. As a language, English can be used not only to communicate but also to express feelings and thoughts. Highschool English teaching should not only let students master the basic language knowledge and skills, but also cultivate students' emotional values. However, high school English teaching has the characteristics of boredom, complexity and comprehensiveness, so many students show negative emotions in learning, and some students even have psychological problems. Therefore, the author in this study puts forward some ways to improve the FLE according to the characteristics of high school English.

Exploring the Effective Use of Diagnostic Tests in the High School English Classroom to Support Student Learning: An Action Research Study

This action research study investigated the use of diagnostic tests and feedback to support student learning in a 12th grade English classroom. The researcher developed a diagnostic test to assess students’ strengths and weaknesses in foundational language and literacy skills. The test included multiple-choice, short-answer, and essay questions. The researcher then separated students into an experimental group, which received diagnostic feedback, individualized learning plans, and incentives, and a controlled group which proceeded with the regular curriculum. The individualized learning plans were created based on the results of the diagnostic test and were designed to address each student’s specific needs. The incentives included extra credit points, certificates of achievement, and public recognition. Several sources of quantitative and qualitative data were analysed, including pre and post-test scores, student surveys, teacher surveys, and student work samples. The results indicated that the intervention had a significant positive impact on students’ learning, confidence, and test anxiety compared to the controlled group. Implications for the use of diagnostic assessment in the secondary English classroom are discussed.

A Survey of the Current Situation of the Integration of “Curriculum Ideology and Politics” into Senior High School English Teaching

Under the background of the new era, China pays more attention to the ideological and political education of students and emphasizes making full use of the resources in various courses to achieve the goal of educating people by disciplines. In order to meet the requirements of the General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards and implement the fundamental task of cultivating people by virtue, English teachers in senior high schools should make full use of the ideological and political education resources, integrate curriculum ideological and political education into English classes, and help students to establish correct ideological and political concepts. Based on this, the survey takes senior high school English teachers as the research object, aiming to explore the current situation of the integration of curriculum ideology and politics into senior high school English teaching, as well as put forward some suggestions for promoting the integration of curriculum ideology and politics into senior high school English teaching.

Social annotation and dialogic teaching and learning in English language arts

AbstractThis research study explores the role of social annotation in supporting dialogic teaching in secondary English language arts. Grounded in Bakhtin's dialogism and building upon research into online discussion, this study describes how a high school English teacher and her students used a digital annotation tool to read and talk about texts. Analyzing student annotations based on discourse features associated with comprehension and high‐level thinking, the study examines the extent to which social annotation supports quality dialogue. Findings highlight the need for open‐ended prompts and teacher scaffolding of online discussions, and authors suggest that dialogue enhances comprehension of texts when students go beyond reporting on others' thoughts and instead share their own ideas, connections, and questions about the text.

The Representation of Global Competence in a Senior High School English Textbook in Indonesia

Global competence (GC) helps to overcome multidimensional problems that should be learned in education. The integration of it can be done through the English for Change textbook which is the current and latest English textbook applying the Merdeka Curriculum. This research investigates the representation of GC in the English for Change textbook for 11th-grade Indonesian senior high school students. This qualitative research employed Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to evaluate and analyze the representation of GC in the 'English for Change’ textbook, which follows the Merdeka Curriculum. The analysis was started by reading and codifying some parts of the textbook to four dimensions of GC from OECD PISA, which are examining the local, global, and intercultural problems; understanding and appreciating various perspectives from others; engaging in open, appropriate, and effective multicultural interaction; and taking action for the development and sustainability of well-being. The finding reveals that GC is represented sufficiently which can be found in 59 pages in the book. The most dimension used is to take action for collective well-being and sustainable development with a percentage of 42.37%. However, examining local, international, and intercultural problem dimensions should be exposed more in the book with a percentage of only 11.86%. Therefore, teachers and students need to learn GC through the English for Change textbook and expand additional insights about multidimensional problems through other learning resources besides the English for Change textbook.

Teachers’ strategies and challenges in conducting HOTS-based activities in Merdeka Curriculum era

This study investigated the approach used by English teachers to promote Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) during the learning process. The Indonesian government, specifically the Ministry of Education and Culture, has taken the lead in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, a curriculum designed to prepare students for the 5.0 era of society. The objective of this curriculum is to develop students who have the Profil Pelajar Pancasila, equipping them with the ability to use their knowledge and abilities effectively in practical circumstances. To achieve this, teachers must employ specific methodologies that enhance students' critical thinking abilities. focused on thirteen English senior high school teachers in Pekalongan Regency, with two selected for interviews and observations. Data were collected through a questionnaire, interviews, and direct observation. The data analysis involved quantifying the questionnaire responses, evaluating the open-ended questionnaire responses, and reviewing the transcripts from the interviews and classroom observation notes. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data from interviews and classroom observation, while coding was employed to extract the transcripts and observation notes. The study revealed that the strategies used by Merdeka Curriculum teachers were project-based learning and open-ended questioning. However, some teachers faced challenges in implementing these strategies in English classes, such as students' skill levels, teachers' expertise, and negative perceptions.

Empowering Chinese high school students: Transformative reading lessons with the task-based learning approach

This essay investigates the implementation of the task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach in Chinese high school English as a Second Language (ESL) reading lessons. Despite China’s Ministry of Education’s endorsement of TBLT, its application in the Chinese language classroom remains challenging due to factors such as traditional examination systems and teachers’ limited knowledge of TBLT principles. Drawing on the author’s experience as an English teacher, the project aims to explore how TBLT can be effectively integrated into ESL reading instruction. The objectives include explaining the main characteristics of TBLT, identifying issues in the Chinese EFL context, providing rationales for TBLT use, and constructing three reading lesson plans that adopt the TBLT approach. The lesson plans, which incorporate authentic materials and a variety of tasks, are designed to promote fluency in reading for information and to develop students’ awareness of real-world issues. The essay concludes that TBLT, with its learner-centered and goal-oriented nature, can enhance motivation and engagement in language learning, and that it is particularly suitable for contexts where students are preparing for overseas studies and need to develop communicative skills and creativity. The project also emphasizes the critical role of teachers in facilitating TBLT lessons and the need for ongoing professional development to support the effective implementation of TBLT in Chinese EFL teaching.

Inquiry into Teaching Listening and Speaking in High School English Classes Based on an Activity Perspective

This paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the issues present in current high school English listening and speaking classes and proposes corresponding improvements. Firstly, it identifies the challenges faced by high school English listening and speaking instruction, including inadequate emphasis on training listening and speaking skills by teachers, lack of operational and measurable course objectives, monotonous forms of activity organization, limitations in the use of listening materials and tools, weak connections between introductory segments and thematic content, failure to understand listening and speaking discourse based on thematic significance, neglect of teaching learning strategies, absence of learning activities in authentic contexts, and singular evaluation methods. Subsequently, a series of suggestions for enhancing teaching quality and efficiency are put forward, such as designing instruction around thematic contexts that integrate listening, speaking, reading, viewing, and writing skills; fostering the development of students’ core competencies, particularly language ability and cultural awareness; conducting comprehensive, interconnected, and practical learning activities; utilizing modern information technology to create a culturally rich learning environment; and implementing formative and multifaceted evaluation mechanisms. These improvement measures aim to enhance students’ listening and speaking abilities and cultivate them as lifelong learners with good listening and speaking habits.
