Symmetry Breaking in the Lowest-Lying Excited-State of CCl4: Valence Shell Spectroscopy in the 5.0–10.8 eV Photon Energy Range

We report absolute high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption cross-sections of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the photon energy range 5.0–10.8 eV (248–115 nm). The molecular spectrum and electronic structure have been comprehensively investigated together with quantum chemical calculations, providing geometries, bond lengths, vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The major electronic excitations have been assigned to valence and Rydberg transitions which are also accompanied by vibrational excitation assigned to degenerate stretching, v3′t2 and degenerate deformation v4′t2 modes. The rather complex nuclear dynamics along the degenerate deformation mode, v4′t2, have been thoroughly investigated by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) method. The relevant Jahn–Teller distortion operative within the lowest-lying electronic excited-state is shown here for the first time in order to yield a weak absorption feature at 6.156 eV. Further calculations on the potential energy curves for the singlet excited-states along the C–Cl stretching coordinate show the relevance of efficient C–Cl bond excision.

On the valence shell spectroscopy of 1,2-dichlorobenzene

We report high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectrum of 1,2-dichlorobenzene in the photon energy range 4.0–10.8 eV (310–115 nm). The electronic state spectroscopy of ortho-C6H4Cl2 has been investigated together with quantum chemical calculations at different levels of theory, also providing vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The valence, mixed valence-Rydberg and Rydberg character of the electronic transitions is accompanied by fine structure which has been mainly assigned to in-plane breathing with C–Cl stretching, v7′a1, ring breathing and C–C stretching, v8′a1, in-plane ring breathing, v9′a1, C–Cl symmetric stretching, v10′a1, and in-plane C–Cl bending v11′a1 modes. The experimental absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of 1,2-dichlorobenzene in the Earth’s atmosphere (0–50 km), showing that solar photolysis is expected to be a weak sink at altitudes lower than 20 km relative to OH radical reactions. Potential energy curves for the lowest-lying excited electronic states, as a function of the C–Cl stretching and in-plane C–Cl bending coordinates, were also obtained employing the time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method. The results show the importance of the complex quasi-degenerate nature of the lowest-lying electronic states which in the intricate nuclear dynamics of the reaction coordinates, yield relevant internal conversion from Rydberg to valence character and in the asymptotic limit bond excision.

The electronic structure of 2(5H)-thiophenone investigated by vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation and theoretical calculations

The electronic state spectroscopy of 2(5H)-thiophenone, C4H4OS, has been investigated by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption in the 3.76–10.69 eV energy range using synchrotron radiation, together with novel quantum chemical calculations performed at the equation of motion coupled cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) level of theory. The major electronic transitions have been assigned to valence and Rydberg character, with relevant C=O, C=C and C–C stretching vibrations across the entire absorption spectrum. Photolysis lifetimes in the Earth’s atmosphere (0–50 km altitude) have been estimated from the absolute photoabsorption cross-sections, indicating that solar photolysis can be expected to be a strong sink mechanism.Graphical abstract

Valence and Rydberg excitations of 2-fluorotoluene in the 4.4–10.8 eV photoabsorption energy region

The electronic state spectroscopy of 2-fluorotoluene in the gas phase has been investigated for the first time using high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption experiments in the 4.4–10.8 eV energy-range, with absolute cross-section measurements obtained. Additionally, we also present a novel set of ab initio calculations (vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths) at two different levels of theory, equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). These are used in the assignment of valence, mix valence-Rydberg and Rydberg transitions, with the associated vibronic series analysed. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross-sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of 2-fluorotoluene in the Earth's atmosphere.

Electronically excited states of formic acid investigated by theoretical and experimental methods

Absolute cross-section values are reported from high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements of gas-phase formic acid (HCOOH) in the photon energy range 4.7–10.8 eV (265–115 nm), together with quantum chemical calculations to provide vertical energies and oscillator strengths. The combination of experimental and theoretical methods has allowed a comprehensive assignment of the electronic transitions. The VUV spectrum reveals various vibronic features not previously reported in the literature, notably associated with (3pa′←10a′), (3p′a′←10a′), (3sa′←2a″) and (3pa′←2a″) Rydberg transitions. The assignment of vibrational features in the absorption bands reveal that the C=O stretching, v3′a′, the H′–O–C′ deformation, v5′a′, the C–O stretching, v6′a′, and the O=C–O′ deformation, v7′a′ modes are mainly active. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have also been used to estimate the photolysis lifetime of HCOOH in the upper stratosphere (30–50 km), showing that solar photolysis is an important sink at altitudes above 30 km but not in the troposphere. Potential energy curves for the lowest-lying electronic excited states, as a function of the C=O coordinate, are obtained employing time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). These calculations have shown the relevance of internal conversion from Rydberg to valence character governing the nuclear dynamics, yielding clear evidence of the rather complex multidimensional nature of the potential energy surfaces involved.

Low-lying electronic states of ethanol investigated by theoretical and synchrotron radiation methods

We investigate the ethanol absorption spectrum in the range 5.64–10.78 eV (220–115 nm), by combining ab initio theoretical and experimental methods in order to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information about the electronic state spectroscopy of ethanol. In particular, absolute cross-section values are reported from high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements. The present VUV spectrum reveals several new features not previously reported in the literature, with particular reference to the Rydberg (ndσ, ndσ′ ← (3a′′/13a)), n ≥ 3 members of the Rydberg (ndπ′(a′) ← (3a′′/13a)) and n = 3 members of the Rydberg (npσ′ ← (10a′/12a)) transitions. The experimental absolute photoabsorption cross sections have subsequently been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of ethanol in the Earth's atmosphere (0–50 km), showing that solar photolysis is expected to be a weak sink at altitudes lower than 40 km to ●OH radical reactions. Potential energy curves for the lowest-lying excited electronic states, as a function of the O–H and the C–OH coordinates, are also obtained employing the equation of motion coupled cluster single and doubles (EOM-CCSD) and time dependant density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. These show clear dissociation character at inter-nuclear distances greater than 2.0 Å for the RO–H and 2.2 Å for the RC–OH bond lengths, indicating the rather complex multidimensional character of the potential energy surfaces involved.

A combined experimental and theoretical study of the lowest-lying valence, Rydberg and ionic electronic states of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole

We investigate for the first time the gas-phase lowest-lying valence, Rydberg and ionic electronic states of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) using synchrotron radiation for photoabsorption and photoelectron spectroscopy. The high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum, in the 4.0–10.8 eV energy-range, has been measured with absolute photoabsorption cross-sections and, thanks to novel ab initio calculations of the vertical energies and oscillator strengths, an assignment of the electronic transitions is comprehensively reported. The assignment of weak vibrational features in the absorption bands of TCA reveal that the ring and C–Cl stretching modes are mainly active. In the photoelectron spectrum the lowest 18 ionic bands, between 8 and 30 eV, have been observed and assigned using the first set of calculated valence and outer valence vertical ionisation energies. Finally, the measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have also been used to estimate the photolysis lifetime of TCA in the upper stratosphere (20–50 km).

Perfluoro effect on the electronic excited states of para-benzoquinone revealed by experiment and theory

We report a comprehensive study on the electronic excited states of tetrafluoro-1,4-benzoquinone, through high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory calculations performed within the nuclear ensemble approach. Absolute cross section values were experimentally determined in the 3.8-10.8 eV energy range. The present experimental results represent the highest resolution data yet reported for this molecule and reveal previously unresolved spectral structures. The interpretation of the results was made in close comparison with the available data for para-benzoquinone [Jones et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2017, 146, 184303]. While the dominant absorption features for both molecules arise from analogous π* ← π transitions, some remarkable differences have been identified. The perfluoro effect manifests in different ways: shifts in band positions and cross sections, appearance of features associated with excitations to σCF* orbitals, and spectrum broadening by quenching of either vibrational or Rydberg progressions. The level of agreement between experiment and theory is very satisfactory, yet that required the inclusion of nuclear quantum effects in the calculations. We have also discussed the role of temperature on the absorption spectrum, as well as the involvement of core-excited resonances in promoting dissociative electron attachment reactions in the 3-5 eV range.

Absolute Photoabsorption Cross-Sections of Methanol for Terrestrial and Astrophysical Relevance.

We investigate the methanol absorption spectrum in the range 5.5-10.8 eV to provide accurate and absolute cross-sections values. The main goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of methanol electronic-state spectroscopy by employing high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements together with state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculation methods. The VUV spectrum reveals several new features that are not previously reported in literature, for n > 3 in the transitions (nsσ(a') ← (2a″)) (1A' ← X̃1A') and (nsσ, npσ, npσ', ndσ ← (7a')) (1A' ← X̃1A'), and with particular relevance to vibrational progressions of the CH3 rocking mode, v11'(a″), mode in the (3pπ(a″) ← (2a″)) (21A' ← X̃1A') absorption band at 8.318 eV. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross-sections have subsequently been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of methanol in the Earth's atmosphere from the ground level up to the limit of the stratosphere (50 km altitude). This shows that solar photolysis plays a negligible role in the removal of methanol from the lower atmosphere compared with competing sink mechanisms. Torsional potential energy scans, as a function of the internal rotation angle for the ground and first Rydberg states, have also been calculated as part of this investigation.

The electronic excited states of dichloromethane in the 5.8-10.8 eV energy range investigated by experimental and theoretical methods

We present a comprehensive experimental high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectrum of dichloromethane, CH2Cl2, with absolute cross sections determined for the full 5.8–10.8 eV energy-range. The calculations on the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths were performed using the equation-of-motion coupled cluster method, restricted to the single and double excitations level (EOM-CCSD), and were used to help analyse the valence and Rydberg structures in the photoabsorption spectrum. The present spectrum additionally reveals several new features not previously reported in the literature, with particular reference to the valence σCCl*(10a1)←nCl(7b2)(11B2←X˜1A1)and (σCCl*(10a1)←nCl(9a1)+σCH*(11a1)←nCl(7b2))(11A1←X˜1A1)transitions at 7.519 and 7.793 eV. A vibrational progression of the CCl2 symmetric stretching, ν3′, and CCl2scissoring, v4′(a1), modes have also been assigned for the first time in the 7.4–8.6 eV energy range. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of dichloromethane in the Earth's atmosphere (0–50 km). Potential energy curves as a function of the C–Cl coordinate, for the four lowest-lying excited A′ and A″ electronic states, have additionally been calculated at the EOM-CCSD level of theory.

Revisiting the photoabsorption spectrum of NH3 in the 5.4-10.8 eV energy region.

We present a comprehensive revisited experimental high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectrum of ammonia, NH3, covering for the first time the full 5.4-10.8 eV energy-range, with absolute cross sections determined. The calculations on the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths were performed using the equation-of-motion coupled cluster method restricted to single and double excitation levels and used to help reanalyze the observed Rydberg structures in the photoabsorption spectrum. The VUV spectrum reveals several new features that are not previously reported in the literature, with particular reference to the vibrational progressions of the (D̃1E'←X̃1A1 '), the (F̃1E'←X̃1A1 '), and the (G̃1A2 ″←X̃1A1 ') absorption bands. In addition, new Rydberg members have been identified in nda1 '←1a2 ″D̃''1A2 ″←X̃1A1 ', where n > 3 has not been reported before as well as in nde″←1a2 ″F̃1E'←X̃1A1 ' and in nsa1 '←1a2 ″G̃1A2 ″←X̃1A1 '. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of ammonia in the Earth's atmosphere (0-50 km).

Probing the Lowest-Lying Electronic States of Acrylic Acid by Experimental and Theoretical Methods.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the electronic state spectroscopy of acrylic acid (C3H4O2) in the gas phase, by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements in the 4.0-10.8 eV energy range, together with ab initio calculations (vertical energies and oscillator strengths), which were used in the assignment of the valence transitions. We also discuss the Rydberg transitions for this molecular target, obtained using the experimental ionization energies available in the literature. The experimental spectrum presented in this paper represents the highest resolution data yet reported for acrylic acid and reveals new features not previously reported in the literature. The dominant transitions have been assigned to (π*(4a″) ← π(3a″)) and (π*(4a″) ← π(2a″)), the latter exhibiting excitation of the ν5'( a') C = O stretching mode with mean energy of 0.155 eV. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of acrylic acid in the upper stratosphere (20-50 km).

Comprehensive investigation of the electronic excitation of W(CO)6 by photoabsorption and theoretical analysis in the energy region from 3.9 to 10.8 eV.

High-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption measurements in the wavelength range of 115–320 nm (10.8–3.9 eV) have been performed together with comprehensive relativistic time-dependent density functional calculations (TDDFT) on the low-lying excited sates of tungsten hexacarbonyl, W(CO)6. The higher resolution obtained reveals previously unresolved spectral features of W(CO)6. The spectrum shows two higher-energy bands (in the energy ranges of 7.22–8.12 eV and 8.15–9.05 eV), one of them with clear vibrational structure, and a few lower-energy shoulders in addition to a couple of lower-energy metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) bands reported in the literature before. Absolute photoabsorption cross sections are reported and, where possible, compared to previously published results. On the basis of this combined experimental/theoretical study the absorption spectrum of the complex has been totally re-assigned between 3.9 and 10.8 eV under the light of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) effects. The present comprehensive knowledge of the nature of the electronically excited states may be of relevance to estimate neutral dissociation cross sections of W(CO)6, a precursor molecule in focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) processes, from electron scattering measurements.

Isobutyl acetate: electronic state spectroscopy by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption, He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy and ab\xa0initio calculations

The high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum of isobutyl acetate, C6H12O2, is presented here and was measured over the energy range 4.3–10.8 eV (290–115 nm). Valence and Rydberg transitions with their associated vibronic series have been observed in the photoabsorption spectrum and are assigned in accordance with new ab initio calculations of the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The measured photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of this ester in the Earth’s upper atmosphere (20–50 km). Calculations have also been carried out to determine the ionization energies and fine structure of the lowest ionic state of isobutyl acetate and are compared with a photoelectron spectrum (from 9.5 to 16.7 eV), recorded for the first time. Valence and Rydberg Excitations of 2,4- and 2,6-Difluorotoluene as Studied by Vacuum Ultraviolet Synchrotron Radiation and ab Initio Calculations.

Here we report novel comprehensive investigations on the electronic state spectroscopies of isolated 2,4- and 2,6-difluorotoluene in the gas phase by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements in the 4.4-10.8 eV energy range, with absolute cross-section values derived. We also present the first set of ab initio calculations (vertical energies and oscillator strengths), which we have used in the assignment of valence transitions of the difluorotoluene molecules, together with calculated ionization energies to obtain the Rydberg transitions for both molecules. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to estimate the photolysis lifetimes of 2,4- and 2,6-difluorotoluene in the Earth's atmosphere.

Valence and lowest Rydberg electronic states of phenol investigated by synchrotron radiation and theoretical methods.

We present the experimental high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectra of phenol covering for the first time the full 4.3-10.8 eV energy-range, with absolute cross sections determined. Theoretical calculations on the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths were performed using time-dependent density functional theory and the equation-of-motion coupled cluster method restricted to single and double excitations level. These have been used in the assignment of valence and Rydberg transitions of the phenol molecule. The VUV spectrum reveals several new features not previously reported in the literature, with particular reference to the 6.401 eV transition, which is here assigned to the 3sσ/σ(∗)(OH)←3π(3a″) transition. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of phenol in the earth's atmosphere (0-50 km).

Valence and Ionic Lowest-Lying Electronic States of Isobutyl Formate Studied by High-Resolution Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoabsorption, Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Ab Initio Calculations.

The highest resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum of isobutyl formate, C5H10O2, yet reported is presented over the energy range 4.5-10.7 eV (275.5-118.0 nm) revealing several new spectral features. Valence and Rydberg transitions and their associated vibronic series observed in the photoabsorption spectrum have been assigned in accordance with new ab initio calculations of the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. Calculations have also been carried out to determine the ionization energies and fine structure of the lowest ionic state of isobutyl formate and are compared with a newly recorded photoelectron spectrum (from 9.0 to 27.0 eV). The value of the first ionization energy was determined to be 10.508 eV (adiabatic) and 10.837 eV (vertical). New vibrational structure is observed in the first photoelectron band, predominantly resulting from C-O and C═O stretches of the molecule. The photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of isobutyl formate in the upper stratosphere (20-50 km), indicating that the hydroxyl radical processes will be the main loss process for isobutyl formate.

Electronic State Spectroscopy of Halothane As Studied by ab Initio Calculations, Vacuum Ultraviolet Synchrotron Radiation, and Electron Scattering Methods.

We present the first set of ab initio calculations (vertical energies and oscillator strengths) of the valence and Rydberg transitions of the anaesthetic compound halothane (CF3CHBrCl). These results are complemented by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption measurements over the wavelength range 115-310 nm (10.8-4.0 eV). The spectrum reveals several new features that were not previously reported in the literature. Spin-orbit effects have been considered in the calculations for the lowest-lying states, allowing us to explain the broad nature of the 6.1 and 7.5 eV absorption bands assigned to σ*(C-Br) ← nBr and σ*(C-Cl) ← n(Cl) transitions. Novel absolute photoabsorption cross sections from electron scattering data were derived in the 4.0-40.0 eV range. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of halothane in the upper stratosphere (20-50 km).

High-resolution vacuum-ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra of 1-butyne and 2-butyne

The absolute photoabsorption cross sections of 1- and 2-butyne have been recorded at high resolution by using the vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier-Transform spectrometer at the SOLEIL Synchrotron. Both spectra show more resolved structure than previously observed, especially in the case of 2-butyne. In this work, we assess the potential importance of Rydberg states with higher values of orbital angular momentum, l, than are typically observed in photoabsorption experiments from ground state molecules. We show how the character of the highest occupied molecular orbitals in 1- and 2-butyne suggests the potential importance of transitions to such high-l (l = 3 and 4) Rydberg states. Furthermore, we use theoretical calculations of the partial wave composition of the absorption cross section just above the ionization threshold and the principle of continuity of oscillator strength through an ionization threshold to support this conclusion. The new absolute photoabsorption cross sections are discussed in light of these arguments, and the results are consistent with the expectations. This type of argument should be valuable for assessing the potential importance of different Rydberg series when sufficiently accurate direct quantum chemical calculations are difficult, for example, in the n ≥ 5 manifolds of excited states of larger molecules.
