OCT angiography in the monitoring of vaginal health.

Fractional-pixel CO2 laser therapy shows promise for treating the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Nevertheless, it remains controversial in the field of female pelvic medicine. This is due to the inherent difficulties in obtaining noninvasive biopsies to evaluate the treatment's efficacy and safety objectively. To address this challenge, we developed a noninvasive intravaginal optical coherence tomography (OCT)/OCT angiography (OCTA) endoscopic system, whose probe features a shape identical to the laser treatment probe. This system can provide high-resolution OCT images to identify the microstructure of vaginal tissue and visualize the vasculature network in vivo. We conducted clinical research on 25 post-menopausal patients with GSM. OCT/OCTA scans were acquired at four different locations of the vagina (distal anterior, distal posterior, proximal anterior, and proximal posterior) during the whole laser treatment session. A U-Net deep learning model was applied to segment the vaginal epithelium for assessing vaginal epithelial thickness (VET). Blood vessel density and VET were quantified to monitor the efficacy of fractional-pixel CO2 laser therapy. Statistical correlation analyses between these metrics and other clinical scores were conducted, validating the utility of our system. This OCT/OCTA endoscopic system has great potential to serve as a noninvasive biopsy tool in gynecological studies to screen, evaluate, and guide laser treatment for GSM.

High-accuracy optical coherence elastography digital volume correlation methods to measure depth regions with low correlation.

The decreasing correlation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images with depth is an unavoidable problem for the depth measurement of the digital volume correlation (DVC) based optical coherence elastography (OCE) method. We propose an OCE-DVC method to characterize biological tissue deformation in deeper regions. The method proposes a strategy based on reliability layer guided displacement tracking to achieve the OCE-DVC method for the deformation measurement in deep regions of OCT images. Parallel computing solves the computational burden associated with the OCE-DVC method. The layer-by-layer adaptive data reading methods are used to guarantee the parallel computing of high-resolution OCT images. The proposed method shown in this study nearly doubles the depth of quantitative characterization of displacement and strain. At this depth, the standard deviation of displacement and strain measurements is reduced by nearly 78%. Under nonuniform deformation field, OCE-DVC method tracked the displacement with large strain gradient in depth region.

Impact of Calcium Eccentricity on the Safety and Effectiveness of Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy: Pooled Analysis From the Disrupt CAD Studies.

Coronary intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) safely facilitates successful stent implantation in severely calcified lesions. This analysis sought to determine the relative impact of lesion calcium eccentricity on the safety and effectiveness of IVL using high-resolution optical coherence tomography imaging. Individual patient-level data (n=262) were pooled from 4 distinct international prospective studies (Disrupt CAD I, II, III, and IV) and analyzed by an independent optical coherence tomography core laboratory. IVL performance in eccentric versus concentric calcification was analyzed by dividing calcified lesions into quartiles (≤180° [most eccentric], 181°-270°, 271°-359°, and 360° [concentric]) by maximum continuous calcium arc. In the 230 patients with clear imaging field on optical coherence tomography, there were no differences in preprocedure minimum lumen area, diameter stenosis, or maximum calcium thickness. The calcium length and volume index increased progressively with increasing mean and maximum continuous calcium arc (ie, concentricity). Conversely, the minimum calcium thickness decreased progressively with increasing concentricity. Post-procedure, the number of calcium fractures, fracture depth, and fracture width increased with increasing concentricity, with a 4-fold increase in the number of fractures in lesions with 360° of calcium arc compared with ≤180°. This increase in IVL-induced calcium fracture with increasing calcium burden and concentricity facilitated stent expansion and luminal gain such that there were no significant differences across quartiles. IVL induced calcium fractures proportional to the magnitude of coronary artery calcium, including in eccentric calcium, leading to consistent improvements in stent expansion and luminal gain in both eccentric and concentric calcified coronary lesions.

Update on the Utility of Optical Coherence Tomography in the Analysis of the Optic Nerve Head in Highly Myopic Eyes with and without Glaucoma

Glaucoma diagnosis in highly myopic subjects by optic nerve head (ONH) imaging is challenging as it is difficult to distinguish structural defects related to glaucoma from myopia-related defects in these subjects. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has evolved to become a routine examination at present, providing key information in the assessment of glaucoma based on the study of the ONH. However, the correct segmentation and interpretation of the ONH data employing OCT is still a challenge in highly myopic patients. High-resolution OCT images can help qualitatively and quantitatively describe the structural characteristics and anatomical changes in highly myopic subjects with and without glaucoma. The ONH and peripapillary area can be analyzed to measure the myopic atrophic-related zone, the existence of intrachoroidal cavitation, staphyloma, and ONH pits by OCT. Similarly, the lamina cribosa observed in the OCT images may reveal anatomical changes that justify visual defects. Several quantitative parameters of the ONH obtained from OCT images were proposed to predict the progression of visual defects in glaucoma subjects. Additionally, OCT images help identify factors that may negatively influence the measurement of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and provide better analysis using new parameters, such as Bruch's Membrane Opening-Minimum Rim Width, which serves as an alternative to RNFL measurements in highly myopic subjects due to its superior diagnostic ability.

Digital refocusing based on deep learning in optical coherence tomography.

We present a deep learning-based digital refocusing approach to extend depth of focus for optical coherence tomography (OCT) in this paper. We built pixel-level registered pairs of en face low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) OCT images based on experimental data and introduced the receptive field block into the generative adversarial networks to learn the complex mapping relationship between LR-HR image pairs. It was demonstrated by results of phantom and biological samples that the lateral resolutions of OCT images were improved in a large imaging depth clearly. We firmly believe deep learning methods have broad prospects in optimizing OCT imaging.

Conjunctival Myxoma: High-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography Findings of a Rare Tumor

The purpose of this study was to describe 2 cases of biopsy-proven conjunctival myxomas and present their optical signs on high-resolution optical coherence tomography (HR-OCT) with clinical and histopathological correlations. Two middle-aged female patients with a clinical diagnosis of conjunctival cysts were referred for surgical treatment. Clinical assessment, photographs, ultrasound biomicroscopy, and HR-OCT images were obtained. Excisional biopsies were performed, and specimens were sent for histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. Clinically, these patients presented with a well-circumscribed, semitranslucent, yellow-pinkish mass. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a dome-shaped epibulbar mass with medium-to-high internal reflectivity. No compromise of the underlying sclera was noted. HR-OCT showed a normal conjunctival epithelium, a subepithelial nonhomogeneous mass with hyperreflective and hyporeflective areas lined by a highly hyperreflective band, and mild posterior shadowing. Histopathological findings and immunoreactivity for CD34 and vimentin confirmed the diagnosis of conjunctival myxoma. The HR-OCT optical signs found in our 2 cases strongly correlated with the microscopic findings. Disclosing the optical signs observed on HR-OCT can help clinicians diagnose and differentiate this lesion, guiding its management. However, more studies with a larger number of patients comparing conjunctival myxoma and other ocular surface tumors are needed to enlighten readers about the unique pattern observed by HR-OCT.

Optimization of X-ray Investigations in Dentistry Using Optical Coherence Tomography

The most common imaging technique for dental diagnoses and treatment monitoring is X-ray imaging, which evolved from the first intraoral radiographs to high-quality three-dimensional (3D) Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Other imaging techniques have shown potential, such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). We have recently reported on the boundaries of these two types of techniques, regarding. the dental fields where each one is more appropriate or where they should be both used. The aim of the present study is to explore the unique capabilities of the OCT technique to optimize X-ray units imaging (i.e., in terms of image resolution, radiation dose, or contrast). Two types of commercially available and widely used X-ray units are considered. To adjust their parameters, a protocol is developed to employ OCT images of dental conditions that are documented on high (i.e., less than 10 μm) resolution OCT images (both B-scans/cross sections and 3D reconstructions) but are hardly identified on the 200 to 75 μm resolution panoramic or CBCT radiographs. The optimized calibration of the X-ray unit includes choosing appropriate values for the anode voltage and current intensity of the X-ray tube, as well as the patient’s positioning, in order to reach the highest possible X-rays resolution at a radiation dose that is safe for the patient. The optimization protocol is developed in vitro on OCT images of extracted teeth and is further applied in vivo for each type of dental investigation. Optimized radiographic results are compared with un-optimized previously performed radiographs. Also, we show that OCT can permit a rigorous comparison between two (types of) X-ray units. In conclusion, high-quality dental images are possible using low radiation doses if an optimized protocol, developed using OCT, is applied for each type of dental investigation. Also, there are situations when the X-ray technology has drawbacks for dental diagnosis or treatment assessment. In such situations, OCT proves capable to provide qualitative images.

Pathogenic NR2F1 variants cause a developmental ocular phenotype recapitulated in a mutant mouse model.

Pathogenic NR2F1 variants cause a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder referred to as the Bosch–Boonstra–Schaaf Optic Atrophy Syndrome. Although visual loss is a prominent feature seen in affected individuals, the molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to visual impairment are still poorly characterized. We conducted a deep phenotyping study on a cohort of 22 individuals carrying pathogenic NR2F1 variants to document the neurodevelopmental and ophthalmological manifestations, in particular the structural and functional changes within the retina and the optic nerve, which have not been detailed previously. The visual impairment became apparent in early childhood with small and/or tilted hypoplastic optic nerves observed in 10 cases. High-resolution optical coherence tomography imaging confirmed significant loss of retinal ganglion cells with thinning of the ganglion cell layer, consistent with electrophysiological evidence of retinal ganglion cells dysfunction. Interestingly, for those individuals with available longitudinal ophthalmological data, there was no significant deterioration in visual function during the period of follow-up. Diffusion tensor imaging tractography studies showed defective connections and disorganization of the extracortical visual pathways. To further investigate how pathogenic NR2F1 variants impact on retinal and optic nerve development, we took advantage of an Nr2f1 mutant mouse disease model. Abnormal retinogenesis in early stages of development was observed in Nr2f1 mutant mice with decreased retinal ganglion cell density and disruption of retinal ganglion cell axonal guidance from the neural retina into the optic stalk, accounting for the development of optic nerve hypoplasia. The mutant mice showed significantly reduced visual acuity based on electrophysiological parameters with marked conduction delay and decreased amplitude of the recordings in the superficial layers of the visual cortex. The clinical observations in our study cohort, supported by the mouse data, suggest an early neurodevelopmental origin for the retinal and optic nerve head defects caused by NR2F1 pathogenic variants, resulting in congenital vision loss that seems to be non-progressive. We propose NR2F1 as a major gene that orchestrates early retinal and optic nerve head development, playing a key role in the maturation of the visual system.

Optical coherence microangiography of the mouse kidney for diagnosis of circulatory disorders

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become widespread in clinical applications in which precise three-dimensional functional imaging of living organs is required. Nevertheless, the kidney is inaccessible for the high resolution OCT imaging due to a high light attenuation coefficient of skin and soft tissues that significantly limits the penetration depth of the probing laser beam. Here, we introduce a surgical protocol and fixation scheme that enables functional visualization of kidney's peritubular capillaries via OCT microangiography. The model of reversible/irreversible glomerulus embolization using drug microcarriers confirms the ability of OCT to detect circulatory disorders. This approach can be used for choosing optimal carriers, their dosages and diagnosis of other blood flow pathologies.

INTERMEDIATE AND DEEP CAPILLARY PLEXUSES IN MACHINE LEARNING SEGMENTATION OF HIGH-RESOLUTION OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY IMAGING.

To describe imaging produced by machine learning-based segmentation of high-resolution optical coherence tomography imaging of the intermediate capillary plexus and deep capillary plexus, layers of vessels not imaged well by dye-based angiography. Three healthy subjects with no ocular problems were imaged with spectral domain optical coherence tomography using an instrument with a scanning speed of 85,000 A-scans per second and 3 µm axial optical resolution. A random forest segmentation strategy was used to segment the intermediate capillary plexus and deep capillary plexus. The depth-resolved imaging data was visualized with the help of volume rendering. The high-resolution optical coherence tomography showed the intermediate capillary plexus and deep capillary plexus at the outer borders of the inner nuclear layer. These vessels could be visualized with unprecedented detail in three dimensions. There were multiple bridging vessels connecting to the whorl-like patterns of capillary mesh of the deep capillary plexus, a feature only previously imaged in histologic evaluation of excised eyes. High-resolution optical coherence tomography, machine learning, and advanced image display techniques have wide relevancy in studying the retina in health and disease. Application of this approach has provided images of the deeper vascular layers of the eye that approximate histologic imaging, but noninvasively.

Retinal Ganglion Cells-Diversity of Cell Types and Clinical Relevance.

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are the bridging neurons that connect the retinal input to the visual processing centres within the central nervous system. There is a remarkable diversity of RGCs and the various subtypes have unique morphological features, distinct functions, and characteristic pathways linking the inner retina to the relevant brain areas. A number of psychophysical and electrophysiological tests have been refined to investigate this large and varied population of RGCs. Technological advances, such as high-resolution optical coherence tomography imaging, have provided additional tools to define the pattern of RGC involvement and the chronological sequence of events in both inherited and acquired optic neuropathies. The mechanistic insights gained from these studies, in particular the selective vulnerability and relative resilience of particular RGC subtypes, are of fundamental importance as they are directly relevant to the development of targeted therapies for these invariably progressive blinding diseases. This review provides a comprehensive description of the various types of RGCs, the developments in proposed methods of classification, and the current gaps in our knowledge of how these RGCs are differentially affected depending on the underlying aetiology. The synthesis of the current body of knowledge on the diversity of RGCs and the pathways that are potentially amenable to therapeutic modulation will hopefully lead to much needed effective treatments for patients with optic neuropathies.

A Novel Approach for Assessing Visual Impairment Caused by Intraocular Lens Opacification: High-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography

To quantify in vitro straylight induced by intraocular lens (IOL) localized opacification using an anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) device. Laboratory investigation. We obtained high-resolution OCT cross-section images of 44 explanted IOLs using a new in vitro application for an anterior segment OCT device, the Anterion (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). In 24 cases, the reason for IOL explantation was a centrally localized opacification, the sequela of a secondary ocular surgery. As a control, we used 20 IOLs removed after an IOL (sub-)luxation. Using image analysis, we found a threshold area value representing a metric for the amount of opacification in a region of interest in the IOL's central optic. We used a modified C-Quant straylight meter (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) to quantify light scattering. We derived a linear regression from calculating the correlation between the amount of opacification and straylight. We visualized different amounts of IOL opacification using the OCT device. The opacified lenses showed a mean threshold area of 6.7% ± 3.3% and mean straylight was 95.1 ± 75.6 deg2/sr. The clear group's mean threshold area was 2.0% ± 0.8% and 5.0 ± 3.4 deg2/sr mean straylight. Straylight correlated statistically significantly with the threshold area, with a correlation coefficient of R2=0.80, P < .001. This high-resolution OCT imaging technique can be used to visualize IOL opacities. The amount of opacification correlated well with the straylight induced by the lens. Anterior segment OCT imaging might be used in the future as a tool for predicting the extent of visual impairment and aid clinicians to quantify patients' complaints.

Reconstruction of Optical Coherence Tomography Images Using Mixed Low Rank Approximation and Second Order Tensor Based Total Variation Method.

This paper proposes a mixed low-rank approximation and second-order tensor-based total variation (LRSOTTV) approach for the super-resolution and denoising of retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images through effective utilization of nonlocal spatial correlations and local smoothness properties. OCT imaging relies on interferometry, which explains why OCT images suffer from a high level of noise. In addition, data subsampling is conducted during OCT A-scan and B-scan acquisition. Therefore, using effective super-resolution algorithms is necessary for reconstructing high-resolution clean OCT images. In this paper, a low-rank regularization approach is proposed for exploiting nonlocal self-similarity prior to OCT image reconstruction. To benefit from the advantages of the redundancy of multi-slice OCT data, we construct a third-order tensor by extracting the nonlocal similar three-dimensional blocks and grouping them by applying the k-nearest-neighbor method. Next, the nuclear norm is used as a regularization term to shrink the singular values of the constructed tensor in the non-local correlation direction. Further, the regularization approaches of the first-order tensor-based total variation (FOTTV) and SOTTV are proposed for better preservation of retinal layers and suppression of artifacts in OCT images. The alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique is then used to solve the resulting optimization problem. Our experiments show that integrating SOTTV instead of FOTTV into a low-rank approximation model can achieve noticeably improved results. Our experimental results on the denoising and super-resolution of OCT images demonstrate that the proposed model can provide images whose numerical and visual qualities are higher than those obtained by using state-of-the-art methods.

N2NSR-OCT: Simultaneous denoising and super-resolution in optical coherence tomography images using semisupervised deep learning.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging shows a significant potential in clinical routines due to its noninvasive property. However, the quality of OCT images is generally limited by inherent speckle noise of OCT imaging and low sampling rate. To obtain high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high-resolution (HR) OCT images within a short scanning time, we presented a learning-based method to recover high-quality OCT images from noisy and low-resolution OCT images. We proposed a semisupervised learning approach named N2NSR-OCT, to generate denoised and super-resolved OCT images simultaneously using up- and down-sampling networks (U-Net (Semi) and DBPN (Semi)). Additionally, two different super-resolution and denoising models with different upscale factors (2× and 4×) were trained to recover the high-quality OCT image of the corresponding down-sampling rates. The new semisupervised learning approach is able to achieve results comparable with those of supervised learning using up- and down-sampling networks, and can produce better performance than other related state-of-the-art methods in the aspects of maintaining subtle fine retinal structures.

Assessment of Generative Adversarial Networks Model for Synthetic Optical Coherence Tomography Images of Retinal Disorders.

PurposeTo assess whether a generative adversarial network (GAN) could synthesize realistic optical coherence tomography (OCT) images that satisfactorily serve as the educational images for retinal specialists, and the training datasets for the classification of various retinal disorders using deep learning (DL).MethodsThe GANs architecture was adopted to synthesize high-resolution OCT images trained on a publicly available OCT dataset, including urgent referrals (37,206 OCT images from eyes with choroidal neovascularization, and 11,349 OCT images from eyes with diabetic macular edema) and nonurgent referrals (8617 OCT images from eyes with drusen, and 51,140 OCT images from normal eyes). Four hundred real and synthetic OCT images were evaluated by two retinal specialists (with over 10 years of clinical retinal experience) to assess image quality. We further trained two DL models on either real or synthetic datasets and compared the performance of urgent versus nonurgent referrals diagnosis tested on a local (1000 images from the public dataset) and clinical validation dataset (278 images from Shanghai Shibei Hospital).ResultsThe image quality of real versus synthetic OCT images was similar as assessed by two retinal specialists. The accuracy of discrimination of real versus synthetic OCT images was 59.50% for retinal specialist 1 and 53.67% for retinal specialist 2. For the local dataset, the DL model trained on real (DL_Model_R) and synthetic OCT images (DL_Model_S) had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.99, and 0.98, respectively. For the clinical dataset, the AUC was 0.94 for DL_Model_R and 0.90 for DL_Model_S.ConclusionsThe GAN synthetic OCT images can be used by clinicians for educational purposes and for developing DL algorithms.Translational RelevanceThe medical image synthesis based on GANs is promising in humans and machines to fulfill clinical tasks.

Super-Resolution of Optical Coherence Tomography Images by Scale Mixture Models.

In this paper, a new statistical model is proposed for the single image super-resolution of retinal Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images. OCT imaging relies on interfero-metry, which explains why OCT images suffer from a high level of noise. Moreover, data subsampling is carried out during the acquisition of OCT A-scans and B-scans. So, it is necessary to utilize effective super-resolution algorithms to reconstruct high-resolution clean OCT images. In this paper, a nonlocal sparse model-based Bayesian framework is proposed for OCT restoration. For this reason, by characterizing nonlocal patches with similar structures, known as a group, the sparse coefficients of each group of OCT images are modeled by the scale mixture models. In this base, the coefficient vector is decomposed into the point-wise product of a random vector and a positive scaling variable. Estimation of the sparse coefficients depends on the proposed distribution for the random vector and scaling variable where the Laplacian random vector and Generalized Extreme-Value (GEV) scale parameter (Laplacian+GEV model) show the best goodness of fit for each group of OCT images. Finally, a new OCT super-resolution method based on this new scale mixture model is introduced, where the maximum a posterior estimation of both sparse coefficients and scaling variables are calculated efficiently by applying an alternating minimization method. Our experimental results prove that the proposed OCT super-resolution method based on the Laplacian+GEV model outperforms other competing methods in terms of both subjective and objective visual qualities.

Analysis and evaluation of BC-mode OCT image visualization for microsurgery guidance.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been gaining acceptance in image-guided microsurgery as a noninvasive imaging technique. However, when using B-mode OCT imaging, it is difficult to continuously keep the surgical tool in the imaging field, and the image of the tissue beneath the tool is corrupted by shadow effects. The alternative using C-mode OCT imaging is either too slow in imaging speed when operating in a high-resolution mode, or provides a poor image resolution in a high-speed mode, with the sweep rate less than one million hertz. Moreover, the 3-dimensional rendering of C-mode OCT image makes it difficult to visualize the tissue structure and track the surgical tool beneath the tissue surface. To solve these problems, we propose a BC-mode OCT image visualization method. This method uses a sparse C-scanning scheme, which provides a set of high-resolution B-mode OCT images at sparsely spaced cross sections. The final BC-mode OCT image is obtained by averaging the image set, with inter frame variance processing to enhance the signal of the surgical tool and tissue layers. The performance of BC-mode OCT images, such as image resolution, signal to noise ratio (SNR), imaging speed, and surgical tool tracking accuracy, is analyzed theoretically and verified experimentally. The feasibility of the proposed method is evaluated by guiding the insertion of a 30-gauge needle into the cornea of an ex-vivo human eye freehand. The results show that this provides better visualization of both the surgical tool and the tissue structure than the conventional B- or C- mode OCT image.

Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography for the non-invasive investigation of the pigment layers of Tang Dynasty tomb murals exhibited in museums

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive subsurface three-dimensional imaging technique based on the Michelson interferometer. Due to the nature of non-invasive detection and high-speed acquisition, OCT is efficient for imaging intact objects to generate a complete overview of their microstructure. This paper presents the investigation of the pigment layer and ground layer of three Tang Dynasty tomb murals exhibited in museums with Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The investigation results demonstrated that SD-OCT system can obtain clear images of the subsurface microstructure and preservation status of ancient murals and can precisely locate and measure the location of the mural defect, by means of en-face image, the system can distinguish the draft line covered by pigment layer. The SD-OCT is an attractive alternative for cultural heritage research and high-resolution OCT images can provide valuable information for Chinese cultural heritage research, identification, and conservation.

Utility of Optical Coherence Tomography for Guiding Laser Therapy Among Patients With Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a viral-induced disease caused by human papillomavirus and the second leading cause of dysphonia in children; however, neither a cure nor a definitive surgical treatment is currently available for RRP. Although laser therapy is often used in the treatment of RRP, the lack of real-time laser-tissue interaction feedback undermines the ability of physicians to provide treatments with low morbidity. Therefore, an intraoperative tool to monitor and control laser treatment depth is needed. To investigate the potential of combining optical coherence tomography (OCT) with laser therapy for patient-tailored laryngeal RRP treatments. This in vivo study was performed at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary from February 1, 2017, to September 1, 2017. Three-dimensional OCT images were acquired before, during, and after photoangiolytic laser therapy in 10 pediatric patients with a history of papilloma growth who presented with lesions and hoarseness. Whether intraoperative OCT monitoring of changes in optical scattering and absorption provides quantitative information to control thermal damage in tissue. Among the 10 pediatric patients (age range, 4-11 years; 6 male) included in the study, high-resolution OCT images revealed epithelial hyperplasia with clear RRP lesion margins. Images acquired during therapy indicated coagulation deep in tissue, and posttherapy images showed the ability to quantify the amount of tissue ablated by the photoangiolytic laser. Concurrent use of OCT imaging and laser therapy may improve postoperative outcomes for patients with RRP by delivering an optimal, patient-tailored treatment. Additional studies investigating the correlation between optical properties with vocal outcomes are required.

Optical coherence tomography retinal image reconstruction via nonlocal weighted sparse representation.

We present a nonlocal weighted sparse representation (NWSR) method for reconstruction of retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. To reconstruct a high signal-to-noise ratio and high-resolution OCT images, utilization of efficient denoising and interpolation algorithms are necessary, especially when the original data were subsampled during acquisition. However, the OCT images suffer from the presence of a high level of noise, which makes the estimation of sparse representations a difficult task. Thus, the proposed NWSR method merges sparse representations of multiple similar noisy and denoised patches to better estimate a sparse representation for each patch. First, the sparse representation of each patch is independently computed over an overcomplete dictionary, and then a nonlocal weighted sparse coefficient is computed by averaging representations of similar patches. Since the sparsity can reveal relevant information from noisy patches, combining noisy and denoised patches' representations is beneficial to obtain a more robust estimate of the unknown sparse representation. The denoised patches are obtained by applying an off-the-shelf image denoising method and our method provides an efficient way to exploit information from noisy and denoised patches' representations. The experimental results on denoising and interpolation of spectral domain OCT images demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed NWSR method over existing state-of-the-art methods.
