Joint ISAR imaging and azimuth scaling under low SNR using parameterized compensation and calibration method with entropy minimum criterion

In general, the method of conventional motion compensation for inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging is divided into translational motion compensation (TMC) and rotational motion compensation (RMC) in sequence. TMC is the premise of rotational compensation and the most critical procedure is range alignment. However, the deviation of echo correlation results in the poor performance of range alignment under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Therefore, a new high-resolution ISAR imaging and azimuth scaling method under low SNR using parameterized compensation and calibration is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the target motion is modeled, in which translational motion is modeled as formula of the polynomial coefficient vector. In addition, entropy minimization corresponding to echo signal with compensation term based on coefficients is taken as objective function. Moreover, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized to search the global optimal parameters to be estimated precisely and efficiently to implement joint motion compensation and azimuth scaling. The experimental results from both simulated and real data verify the effectiveness and robustness of the method.

Rayleigh-based segmentation of ISAR images.

Inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) provides a solution to increase the radar angular resolution by observing a moving target over time. The high-resolution ISAR image should undergo a segmentation step to get the target's point cloud data, which is then used for classification purposes. Existing segmentation algorithms seek an optimal threshold in an iterative manner, which adds to the complexity of ISAR and results in an increase in the processing time. In this paper, we take advantage of the distribution of the ISAR image intensity, which is based on the Rayleigh distribution, and obtain an explicit relationship for the optimal segmentation threshold. The proposed segmentation algorithm alleviates the requirement for iterative optimization and its efficiency is shown using both simulated and experimental ISAR images.

Semi-Supervised Implicit Neural Representation for Polarimetric ISAR Image Super-Resolution

Compared with the optical imaging system, polarimetric inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) can work all-day and all-weather, which plays an important role in space surveillance. However, high-resolution (HR) ISAR images usually require large bandwidth and coherent integration angle, which is limited by the equipment’s physical conditions. In this vein, the super-resolution (SR) of ISAR images is of vital importance. At present, supervised learning methods are often used in image SR of computer vision. By constructing low-resolution (LR) and HR data pairs, the neural network can learn the mapping relationship between them. However, the low-frequency information in LR image data is less considered. In addition, to obtain different scales of SR reconstruction results, multiple network training repetitions are usually needed, which consumes time and hardware resources. Based on the idea of implicit neural representation, this paper constructs an implicit neural network representation framework for polarimetric ISAR image SR, which can obtain multiscale SR results through one training. A semi-supervised module is also constructed to make the network have the ability of supervised and unsupervised learning, which is conducive to mine and make better use of LR images. A polarimetric ISAR image SR dataset is constructed for satellite targets while four indexes are adopted for quantitative evaluation in global and local aspects. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves better SR performance, where the PSNR index can be increased at least by 0.93dB.

Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Using an Attention Generative Adversarial Network

The traditional inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging uses matched filtering and pulse accumulation methods. When improving the resolution and real-time performance, there are some problems, such as the high sampling rate and large amount of data. Although the compressed sensing (CS) method can realize high-resolution imaging with small sampling data, the sparse reconstruction algorithm has high computational complexity and is time-consuming. The imaging result is limited by the model and sparsity hypothesis. We propose a novel CS-ISAR imaging method using an attention generative adversarial network (AGAN). The generator of AGAN is a modified U-net consisting of both spatial and channel-wise attention. The trained generator can learn the imaging operation from down-sampling data to high-resolution ISAR images. Simulations and measured data experiments are given to validate the advantage of the proposed method.

Joint random stepped frequency ISAR imaging and autofocusing based on 2D alternating direction method of multipliers

Random stepped frequency (RSF) inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) has attracted more attention due to its outstanding electronic counter-countermeasure (ECCM) performance by frequency agility. However, the two-dimensional (2D) sparse sampling echo, i.e. sparse sub-pulses and sparse aperture, increases the difficulty of 2D high-resolution ISAR imaging and autofocusing. Aiming to solve this problem, a novel 2D alternating direction method of multipliers (2D-ADMM) based imaging and autofocusing framework is proposed to achieve 2D high-resolution for 2D sparse RSF ISAR. In order to obtain the optimal value for phase correction, the phase error corresponding to each sub-pulse is estimated by solving an unconstrained optimization problem. To jointly achieve autofocusing during the process of ISAR image reconstruction, the phase error estimation is merged into the image reconstruction framework, and then two different strategies under the 2D ADMM framework are derived to iteratively solve this compound optimization problem in matrix form. Experiments based on both simulated and measured data validate the effectiveness of the proposed 2D joint methods, meanwhile, maintaining an acceptable imaging efficiency.

High-resolution ISAR imaging based on photonic receiving for high-accuracy automatic target recognition.

A scheme of high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging based on photonic receiving is demonstrated. In the scheme, the linear frequency modulated (LFM) pulse echoes with 8 GHz bandwidth at the center frequency of 36 GHz are directly sampled with the photonic analog-to-digital converter (PADC). The ISAR images of complex targets can be constructed without detection range swath limitation due to the fidelity of the sampled results. The images of two pyramids demonstrate that the two-dimension (2D) resolution is 3.3 cm × 1.9 cm. Furthermore, the automatic target recognition (ATR) is employed based on the high-resolution experimental dataset under the assistance of deep learning. Despite of the small training dataset containing only 50 samples for each model, the ATR accuracy of three complex targets is still validated to be 95% on a test dataset with the equal number of samples.

Removal of Micro-Doppler Effects in ISAR Imaging Based on the Joint Processing of Singular Value Decomposition and Complex Variational Mode Extraction

For inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of targets with micromotion parts, the removal of micro-Doppler (m-D) effects is the key procedure. However, under the condition of a sparse aperture, the echo pulse is limited or incomplete, giving rise to the difficulty of eliminating m-D effects. Thus, a novel m-D effects removal algorithm is proposed, which can effectively eliminate m-D effects, as well as the interference introduced by noise and sparse aperture in the ISAR image of the main body. The proposed algorithm mainly includes two processing steps. First, combined with the cut-off point determined by the normalized singular value difference spectrum, the rough estimation of the main body is achieved by singular value decomposition (SVD). Then, the variational mode extraction (VME) is extended to complex variational mode extraction (CVME). The constrained variational problem constructed by bandwidth and spectral overlap constraints is solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and the precise estimation of the main body is obtained. Experimental results based on both simulated and measured data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can acquire the high-resolution ISAR image of the main body under noisy and sparse conditions.

High-Resolution ISAR Imaging Based on Plug-and-Play 2D ADMM-Net

We propose a deep learning architecture, dubbed Plug-and-play 2D ADMM-Net (PAN), by combining model-driven deep networks and data-driven deep networks for effective high-resolution 2D inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging with various signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and incomplete data scenarios. First, a sparse observation model of 2D ISAR imaging is established, and a 2D ADMM algorithm is presented. On this basis, using the plug and play (PnP) technique, PnP 2D ADMM is proposed, by combining the 2D ADMM algorithm and the deep denoising network DnCNN. Then, we unroll and generalize the PnP 2D ADMM to the PAN architecture, in which all adjustable parameters in the reconstruction layers, denoising layers, and multiplier update layers are learned by end-to-end training through back-propagation. Experimental results showed that the PAN with a single parameter set can achieve noise-robust ISAR imaging with superior reconstruction performance on incomplete simulated and measured data under different SNRs.

An Efficient Maritime Target Joint Detection and Imaging Method with Airborne ISAR System

In this paper, a joint maritime moving target detection and imaging approach, referred to as the fast inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging approach, based on the multi-resolution space−time adaptive processing (STAP), is proposed to improve the target detection performance and the target imaging efficiency in an airborne radar system. In the target detection stage, the sub-band STAP is introduced to improve the robustness of clutter suppression and to enhance the target output power with the decreased range resolution, by which the coarse estimation of target range-Doppler (R-D) location is obtained as the prior knowledge. In the following target imaging stage, the ISAR imaging is applied in the localized R-D zone surrounding with the target location. However, it is difficult to directly apply ISAR imaging with the conventional R-D algorithm because the slow-moving maritime target cannot be separated from the clutter interference in the Doppler frequency dimension. In this regard, the full-band STAP is applied in the R-D two-dimensional frequency domain for the simultaneous clutter suppression and high-resolution ISAR imaging, in which the envelope alignment and phase compensation are achieved by adaptive match filtering with the target Doppler frequency coarse estimation. Moreover, the reduced-dimension STAP applied in the target-surrounded localized Doppler frequency zone gives facilities for alleviating the computation burden. Simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Real-Time Super-Resolution ISAR Imaging Using Unsupervised Learning

Compressive sensing (CS) enables high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging with limited measurements. However, these methods reconstruct images via iterative optimization, resulting in a high computational load. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been used to perform super-resolution ISAR imaging in real time, where high-resolution images are necessarily used as ground truth. However, the desired high-resolution images are not reliable in practice. This letter presents an unsupervised CNN-based framework for super-resolution ISAR imaging. The well-trained CNN can directly produce high-resolution ISAR images in real time. Moreover, the network is trained in an unsupervised manner, which is suitable for practical applications. Furthermore, a pseudo <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\ell _{0}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -norm has been used as the sparse constraint for the exact image reconstruction. The proposed approach has been used to process the real ISAR data, and the experimental results are convincing.

Integration of Super-Resolution ISAR Imaging and Fine Motion Compensation for Complex Maneuvering Ship Targets Under High Sea State

Under high sea state, ship targets make complex maneuvering motions due to strong disturbances such as sea waves and sea winds. Selecting the optimal imaging time interval to shorten the coherent processing interval (CPI) can reduce the complexity of motion errors, but the imaging resolution is affected as well, i.e., the motion error complexity and imaging resolution are constrained by each other. To address this problem, this article proposes a novel inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging framework for complex maneuvering ship targets to achieve the integration of super-resolution (SR) ISAR imaging and fine motion compensation (ISRFMC) under high sea state. With regard to the complex maneuvering motion of ship targets, we analyze the motion errors caused by the time-variant rotational velocity and imaging projection plane (IPP) on the echo signals, respectively, and a fine phase error model is established to uniformly represent the dual time-variant characteristic (DTVC) of complex maneuvering ship targets. Moreover, a deformed Akaike information criterion (DAIC) is developed to realize the adaptive selection of the phase error model with the image sharpness as the objective function. Underpinned by the Bayesian compressive sensing (BCS) theory, the SR ISAR imaging can be realized by solving a sparsity-driven optimization problem via a modified quasi-Newton solver. Particularly, the fine phase errors are constructed as the model errors of image reconstruction, and the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is utilized to solve the maximum image sharpness optimization problem in order to perform the joint fine motion compensation and azimuth scaling (JFMCAS). ISRFMC or the integration of SR ISAR imaging and fine motion compensation can be achieved through alternate iteration, so as to obtain well-focused and scaled high-resolution ISAR images of complex maneuvering ship targets under high sea state. Extensive experiments based on both simulated and real data verify that the proposed algorithm is capable of addressing the conflict between imaging resolution and motion error complexity under high sea state.

Radar Imaging Based on IEEE 802.11ad Waveform in V2I Communications

Since most of vehicular radar systems are already exploiting millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectra, it would become much more feasible to implement a joint radar and communication system by extending communication frequencies into the mmWave band. In this paper, an IEEE 802.11ad waveform-based radar imaging technique is proposed for vehicular settings. A roadside unit (RSU) transmits the IEEE 802.11ad waveform to a vehicle for communications while the RSU also listens to the echoes of transmitted waveform to perform inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. To obtain high-resolution images of the vehicle, the RSU needs to accurately estimate round-trip delays, Doppler shifts, and velocity of vehicle. The proposed ISAR imaging first estimates the round-trip delays using a good correlation property of Golay complementary sequences in the IEEE 802.11ad preamble. The Doppler shifts are then obtained using least square estimation from the echo signals and refined to compensate phase wrapping caused by phase rotation. The velocity of vehicle is determined using an equation of motion and the estimated Doppler shifts. Simulation results verify that the proposed technique is able to form high-resolution ISAR images from point scatterer models of realistic vehicular settings with different viewpoints. The proposed ISAR imaging technique can be used for various vehicular applications, e.g., traffic condition analyses or advanced collision warning systems.

Fully Coherent Integration and Measurement of Optimized Frequency Agile Waveform for Weak Target High-Resolution ISAR Imaging

Frequency agile waveform effectively decreases interception probability and increases the anti-jamming ability for radar probing in the electromagnetic countermeasure environment. However, the transmitting agile frequency introduces jitter phases causing de-coherence of echoes, which decreases signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) accumulation gain and leads to difficult motion estimation. Therefore, stable target detection, motion parameters estimation, and inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging for frequency-agile radar are still intractable problems in the low SNR environment. Aiming at these problems, we proposed a fully coherent processing method for weak target detection and ISAR imaging for frequency agile waveform in this paper. The agile waveform with low range and Doppler side lobes is designed to improve motion parameters estimation and ISAR imaging performance. Then, the joint jitter phases and motion parameters estimation based on the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is proposed to realize robust target detection and motion parameters estimation in low SNR conditions. The translational motion compensation and sparse ISAR imaging methods are also presented based on the detection and motion parameters estimation results. Finally, both simulated and real-measured data are used to verify the remarkable detection, motion parameters estimation, and ISAR imaging performance compared with the traditional non-coherent accumulation and mixture of coherent and non-coherent accumulation methods.

Multi-Functional Microwave Photonic Radar System for Simultaneous Distance and Velocity Measurement and High-Resolution Microwave Imaging

A photonic-assisted multi-functional radar system for simultaneous distance and velocity measurement and high-resolution microwave imaging is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using a composite transmitted microwave signal of a single-chirped linearly frequency-modulated (LFM) signal and a single-tone microwave signal. In the system, the transmitted signal is generated via photonic frequency up-conversion based on a single integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-DPMZM), while the echo signals scattered from the target are de-chirped to two low-frequency signals using a microwave photonic frequency mixer. By using the two low-frequency de-chirped signals, the real-time distance and radial velocity of the moving target can be measured accurately according to the round-trip time of the echo signal and its Doppler frequency shift. Compared with the previously reported distance and velocity measurement methods, where two LFM signals with opposite chirps are used, these parameters can be obtained using only a single-chirped LFM signal and a single-tone microwave signal. Meanwhile, high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging can also be realized using ISAR imaging algorithm. An experiment is performed to verify the proposed multi-functional microwave photonic radar system. An up-chirped LFM signal from 8.5 to 12.5 GHz and an 8.0 GHz single-tone microwave signal are used as the transmitted signal. The results show that the absolute measurement errors of distance and radial velocity are less than 5.9 cm and 2.8 cm/s, respectively. ISAR imaging results are also demonstrated, which proves the high-resolution and real-time ISAR imaging ability of the proposed system.

High-Resolution ISAR Imaging and Autofocusing via 2D-ADMM-Net

A deep-learning architecture, dubbed as the 2D-ADMM-Net (2D-ADN), is proposed in this article. It provides effective high-resolution 2D inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging under scenarios of low SNRs and incomplete data, by combining model-based sparse reconstruction and data-driven deep learning. Firstly, mapping from ISAR images to their corresponding echoes in the wavenumber domain is derived. Then, a 2D alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is unrolled and generalized to a deep network, where all adjustable parameters in the reconstruction layers, nonlinear transform layers, and multiplier update layers are learned by an end-to-end training through back-propagation. Since the optimal parameters of each layer are learned separately, 2D-ADN exhibits more representation flexibility and preferable reconstruction performance than model-driven methods. Simultaneously, it is able to better facilitate ISAR imaging with limited training samples than data-driven methods owing to its simple structure and small number of adjustable parameters. Additionally, benefiting from the good performance of 2D-ADN, a random phase error estimation method is proposed, through which well-focused imaging can be acquired. It is demonstrated by experiments that although trained by only a few simulated images, the 2D-ADN shows good adaptability to measured data and favorable imaging results with a clear background can be obtained in a short time.

Conditional Prior Probabilistic Generative Model With Similarity Measurement for ISAR Imaging

The higher bandwidth inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) can obtain the higher resolution radar images, which can provide more target information and help improve radar target detection and recognition. It is essential to study how to achieve a precise high-resolution (HR) ISAR image utilizing limited measurement echoes. The existing neural-network-based ISAR imaging methods extract features only from limited measurement echoes, and the common features in HR ISAR images are not utilized sufficiently, which limits the imaging performance improvement. Moreover, in their loss functions, there are no explicit constraints on the correct recovery of strong scattering points, which are important in reflecting the target characteristics. In this letter, we propose a conditional probabilistic generative model to achieve the HR ISAR imaging. By optimizing the well-designed Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between conditional prior and approximate posterior probability distribution in the loss function, the common features contained in training HR radar images can be learned, and a suitable prior probability distribution for the latent variable can be obtained. To accurately recover the positions and relative amplitudes of strong scattering points, we blend a similarity measurement that is sensitive to the large values' locations in a vector with the adversarial loss. Both visual and numerical results of extensive experiments prove that the proposed model can obtain enhanced effectiveness and efficiency compared with some counterparts.

Multiview ISAR Imaging for Complex Targets Based on Improved SBR Scattering Model

A novel multiview inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging method is proposed to simulate high-resolution and identifiable ISAR image of complex targets by handling large-angle and wide-bandwidth scattering data. The scattering data are simulated with the shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) method. The bidirectional ray-tracing algorithm is developed to reduce the computation time. Simulation results indicate that the improved method is efficient and reliable to calculate electromagnetic (EM) scattering of electrically large targets. To implement the multiview ISAR imaging method after data simulation, we divide the large-angle and wide-bandwidth scattering data into subaperture data and conduct ISAR image processing for each subaperture datum locally. Transforming each subaperture ISAR image to the global coordinate system and summing them together will produce the high-resolution ISAR image that is meaningful for the database set up for synthetic aperture radar automatic target recognition (SAR ATR). The final simulation ISAR images further validate the great performance of our scattering calculation algorithm and ISAR imaging method.

High-Resolution ISAR Imaging for Maneuvering Targets Based on Iterative Adaptive Processing

Inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging for maneuvering targets undergoing significant angular motions in a high-resolution radar system is a complicated task due to the presence of time-varying Doppler phases, resulting in the substantial performance degradation by using the conventional range-Doppler (RD) algorithm. In this paper, a novel range instantaneous Doppler (RID) technique based on high-resolution time-frequency distribution (TFD) is proposed to realize the ISAR imaging for maneuvering targets with complex phase fluctuation. After motion compensation, the target signal in a range unit is transformed into high-resolution time-frequency domain by means of the short-time iterative adaptive approach (STIAA), which can avoid the troubled cross-term interference and effectively break through the time-frequency resolution restriction in comparison with the conventional short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Finally, the reconstruction of high-resolution ISAR image for a maneuvering target can be obtained in the RID domain. The effectiveness of the proposed ISAR imaging algorithm is validated by both simulated and real-measured SAR/ISAR data processing results.

Pattern Coupled Sparse Bayesian Learning Based on UTAMP for Robust High Resolution ISAR Imaging

Block sparse Bayesian learning (BSBL) has been widely used in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, which significantly improves the imaging performance by exploiting the sparse pattern information of ISAR images. However, the conventional Bayesian learning algorithm has high computational complexity, which hinders its applications to real-time processing of radar imaging. The approximate message passing (AMP) can be used to obtain a low complexity implementation of sparse Bayesian learning (SBL). However, AMP suffers from performance losses and even diverges in the case of high-Doppler resolution ISAR imaging where the measurement matrix can be highly correlated. To solve this problem, we propose a fast pattern coupled SBL ISAR imaging algorithm based on approximate message passing with unitary transformation (UTAMP). First, the estimates of the hyperparameters of sparse vector are obtained through UTAMP based SBL, and then nearest neighbor hyperparameters are coupled and updated for next iteration. With low complexity, the proposed algorithm can effectively exploit the sparse pattern information of ISAR images, and exhibits excellent convergence and imaging performance. Both simulation and real data experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

High-Resolution ISAR Imaging with Modified Joint Range Spatial-Variant Autofocus and Azimuth Scaling.

Well-focused and accurately scaled high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images provide a sound basis for feature extraction and target recognition. This paper proposes a novel high-resolution ISAR imaging algorithm, namely modified joint range spatial-variant autofocus and azimuth scaling algorithm (MJAAS). After motion compensation, the shift of the equivalent rotational center (ERC) of the target destroys the linear relationship between the azimuth chirp rates (ACR) of echo signals and the range coordinates of scattering points, thereby leading to the failure of azimuth scaling. Accordingly, a new joint equivalent rotational center position and effective rotational velocity (JERCP-ERV) signal model is established, serving as the basis of MJAAS. By recourse to the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) algorithm, MJAAS can jointly estimate the ERCP and ERV by solving a minimum entropy optimization problem, so as to simultaneously achieve accurate azimuth scaling and range spatial-variant autofocus, which further improves the image focusing performance. MJAAS is not restricted by the modes of motion errors (coherent or non-coherent) and the motion compensation methods, so it can be widely applied to real data with the advantages of strong practicality and high accuracy. Extensive experimental results based on both simulated and real data are provided to corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
