Increasing Mass Transfer Resistance of MOFs as a Reverse Tuning Strategy to Achieve High-Resolution Gas Chromatographic Separation.

In separation science, precise control and regulation of the MOF stationary phase are crucial for achieving a high separation performance. We supposed that increasing the mass transfer resistance of MOFs with excessive porosity to achieve a moderate mass transfer resistance of the analytes is the key to conducting the MOF stationary phase with a high resolution. Three-dimensional UiO-67 (UiO-67-3D) and two-dimensional UiO-67 (UiO-67-2D) were chosen to validate this strategy. Compared with UiO-67-3D with overfast mass transfer and low retention, the reduced porosity of UiO-67-2D increased the mass transfer resistance of analytes in reverse, resulting in improved separation performance. Kinetic diffusion experiments were conducted to verify the difference in mass transfer resistance of the analytes between UiO-67-3D and UiO-67-2D. In addition, the optimization of the UiO-67-2D thickness for separation revealed that a moderate diffusion length of the analytes is more advantageous in achieving the equilibrium of absorption and desorption.

Efficient gas chromatographic separation of xylene and other aromatic isomers by using pillar[6]arene-based stationary phase

The separation of aromatic isomers, in particular xylene isomers, represents a big issue in chemical and petroleum industries, owing to their similar molecular sizes and boiling points. In this work, the investigation ofpillar[6]arene derivative modified by long alkyl chains (P6A-C10) as a stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separations of xylene isomers is presented. Pillar[n]arenes are a new class of macrocyclic hosts that can accommodate specific guests due to their highly symmetrical and rigid pillar architectures with π-electron rich cavities. The P6A-C10 column showed high-resolution performance towards xylene isomers, with peculiar advantages if compared with the commercial HP-5, HP-35, DB-17, and PEG-20Mcolumns.A quantum chemistry calculation has been performed, showing a difference in non-covalent interactions with the P6A-C10 pillar framework, which leads to specific selectivity for xylene isomers.Furthermore, the P6A-C10 column exhibited good repeatability.

A chiral metal-organic cage [Fe4L6](ClO4)8 used for capillary gas chromatographic separations

Metal-organic cages (MOCs), as a promising class of crystalline porous materials with well-defined cavities, have attracted wide attention due to their multifarious potential applications in gas storage, host-guest chemistry, molecular recognition, separation, catalysis, sensing, and drug delivery and so on. Herein, we report that a chiral MOC [Fe4L6](ClO4)8 coated capillary column was fabricated for high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of various analytes, including n-alkanes, n-alcohols, positional isomers, aromatic hydrocarbon mixture, especially for racemic compounds. A series of racemic compounds such as alcohols, epoxides, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, esters, alkenes, sulfoxides and amino acid derivatives could be well separated on the [Fe4L6](ClO4)8 coated capillary column with high enantioselectivity and good reproducibility. Comparing the chiral resolution ability of the MOC [Fe4L6](ClO4)8 coated column with the commercial β-DEX 120 column and the porous organic cage (POC) CC10 coated column, the chiral MOC column can be complementary to the two different types of columns. The results show that the chiral MOC [Fe4L6](ClO4)8 exhibited excellent separation performance toward a wide range of organic compounds, which will be very attractive as a new chiral separation media and has potential application prospects in separation science.

Chiral hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks used as a chiral stationary phase for chiral separation in gas chromatography

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are two dimensional (2D) or three dimensional (3D) porous crystalline materials constructed by Hydrogen bond interaction. In recent years, a variety of functional HOF materials have been successfully synthesized and used in structural identification, environmental pollutant removal, chiral resolution, drug delivery, fluorescence sensing, etc. Here, we first reported that a HOF to coated capillary column for high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of a wide range of analytes, including n-alkanes, n-alcohols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and positional isomers, especially for racemates, the HOFs column showed excellent separation repeatability and reproducibility. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values for the retention times were in the range of 0.37–2.43% for run to run (n = 3), 0.38–2.51% for day-to-day (n = 3), and 0.31–2.54% for column-to-column (n = 3), respectively. Moreover, we applied density-functional theory to calculate the adsorption of enantiomers in HOF structures. This work proved that the HOFs had great application prospects as stationary phase in gas chromatography.

In situ fabrication of microporous organic network coated capillary column for high resolution gas chromatographic separation of hydrocarbons.

Microporous organic networks (MONs) are a new class of porous materials synthesized via Sonogashira coupling reactions between organic building blocks. Here we report an in situ synthesis approach to fabricate MONs coated capillary column for high resolution GC separation of hydrocarbons. The McReynolds constant evaluation reveals the MONs coated capillary is a non-polar column. The MONs coated capillary column shows good resolution for GC separation of diverse important industrial hydrocarbons such as linear and branched alkanes, alkylbenzenes, pinene isomers, ethylbenzene and styrene, cyclohexane and benzene. The MONs coated capillary column gave a high column efficiency of 1542 plates per meter for hexane and good precision for replicate separations of the selected hydrocarbons with the RSDs of 0.2-0.3, 1.5-3.1, and 1.9-3.3% for retention time, peak height and peak area, respectively. The MONs coated capillary also offered better resolution than commercial Inert Cap-1 and Inert Cap-5 capillary columns for hexane and heptane isomers. These results reveal the potential of MONs as novel stationary phases in GC.

Amphiphilic triptycene-based stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separations

This work reports a new type of triptycene-based amphiphilic stationary phase (TP-2IL) for gas chromatography (GC). It is an integration of the 3D π-rich triptycene framework with ionic liquids. Its capillary column showed the efficiency of 3880 plates/m determined by n-dodecane at 120 °C (k = 2.79) and exhibited good performance for analytes from apolar to polar nature. Particularly, it has outstanding capability for resolving critical pairs of anilines and phenols with good peak shapes and shows distinct advantages over its composing counterparts (TP-2BO and O-IL) and widely-used commercial columns, namely 35% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (DB-35) and polyethylene glycol (INNOWAX). Moreover, the TP-2IL column exhibited good repeatability and reproducibility with the values of relative standard deviation in the range of 0.02%–0.07% for run-to-run, 0.10%–0.35% for day-to-day and 2.9%–5.1% for column-to-column, respectively, and good thermal stability up to 300 °C. Furthermore, its applications for determining isomer impurities in real samples demonstrate its feasibility for practical GC analysis. This work presents a facile strategy for constructing triptycene-based stationary phases with amphiphilic selectivity and provides alternatives of highly selective stationary phases for chromatographic analysis.

Covalent organic nanospheres: facile preparation and application in high-resolution gas chromatographic separation.

Covalent organic nanospheres (CONs), a new kind of nanospherical polymer, were fabricated by a facile and rapid room-temperature solution-phase strategy. CONs can be used as a new excellent separation medium in high-resolution gas chromatography due to their uniform morphology, good dispersion, and outstanding thermal and solvent stability.

Homochiral Metal-Organic Cage for Gas Chromatographic Separations.

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) as a new type of porous material with well-defined cavities were extensively pursued because of their relative ease of synthesis and their potential applications in host-guest chemistry, molecular recognition, separation, catalysis, gas storage, and drug delivery. Here, we first reported that a homochiral MOC [Zn3L2] is explored to fabricate [Zn3L2] coated capillary column for high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of a wide range of analytes, including n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and positional isomers, especially for racemates. Various kinds of racemates such as alcohols, diols, epoxides, ethers, halohydrocarbons, and esters were separated with good enantioselectivity and reproducibility on the [Zn3L2] coated capillary column. The fabricated [Zn3L2] coated capillary column exhibited significant chiral recognition complementary to that of a commercial β-DEX 120 column and our recently reported homochiral porous organic cage CC3-R coated column. The results show that the homochiral MOCs will be very attractive as a new type of chiral selector in separation science.

A highly ordered chiral inorganic mesoporous material used as stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separations

A highly ordered chiral mesoporous silica-coated capillary column has been used for high-resolution gas chromatographic separations. The column has excellent selectivity, not only for the separation of isomers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, linear alkanes, long chain alkanes, Grob’s test mixture and aromatic hydrocarbons, but also for the resolution of different classes of chiral compounds. Additionally, the column exhibits high column efficiency, excellent temperature resistance, and analysis times are short. This is the first report of a highly ordered chiral inorganic mesoporous silica used in separation science.

Fabrication of powdery polymer aerogel as the stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separation

Novel powdery polymer aerogel (PPA) prepared via the (micro)emulsion polymerization and the following hyper crosslinking reaction was fabricated as stationary phase of capillary column for the first time. Due to its powdery morphology, unique 3D nano-network structure, high surface area and good thermostability, the PPA-coated capillary column demonstrated high-resolution chromatographic separation towards nonpolar and weakly polar organic compounds, including benzene series, n-alkanes, ketone mixtures and trichlorobenzenes. Moreover, the reproducibility, quantitative analysis ability and thermostability of PPA-coated capillary column were also evaluated. The relative standard deviations for three replicate determinations of selected analytes were 0.02–0.11%, 0.12–0.26% and 1.2–3.6% for run-to-run, day-to-day and column-to-column analyses, respectively. The PPA demonstrated good thermostability, and the PPA-coated capillary column was proved to be heat-resistant (270 °C). The results of this study show PPA is an excellent candidate to be employed as stationary phase for gas chromatography capillary.

A homochiral porous organic cage with large cavity and pore windows for the efficient gas chromatography separation of enantiomers and positional isomers.

Porous organic cages composed of discrete cage molecules have attracted considerable recent attention as gas adsorption materials and separation media. In this study, we report a homochiral porous organic cage CC5 with a large cavity and pore windows as a novel stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separations. The capillary column was prepared by a static coating method. A large number of racemic compounds have been resolved on the coated capillary column, including derivatized amino acids, alcohols, alcohol amines, esters, ethers, ketones, and epoxides. It is interesting that the CC5-coated capillary column exhibits significant chiral recognition complementarity to a commercial β-DEX 120 column and a previously reported homochiral porous organic cage CC3-R-coated column, which could expand the range of the analytes amenable to separation on porous organic cage-based capillary columns. Moreover, the fabricated column also shows excellent selectivity for the separation of positional isomers, including the challenging ethylbenzene and xylene isomers. Experimental results demonstrate an excellent separation performance and stability of the CC5-coated column, making it promising for gas chromatography applications.

Application of Homochiral Alkylated Organic Cages as Chiral Stationary Phases for Molecular Separations by Capillary Gas Chromatography.

Molecular organic cage compounds have attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in gas storage, catalysis, chemical sensing, molecular separations, etc. In this study, a homochiral pentyl cage compound was synthesized from a condensation reaction of (S,S)-1,2-pentyl-1,2-diaminoethane and 1,3,5-triformylbenzene. The imine-linked pentyl cage diluted with a polysiloxane (OV-1701) was explored as a novel stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of organic compounds. Some positional isomers were baseline separated on the pentyl cage-coated capillary column. In particular, various types of enantiomers including chiral alcohols, esters, ethers and epoxides can be resolved without derivatization on the pentyl cage-coated capillary column. The reproducibility of the pentyl cage-coated capillary column for separation was investigated using nitrochlorobenzene and styrene oxide as analytes. The results indicate that the column has good stability and separation reproducibility after being repeatedly used. This work demonstrates that molecular organic cage compounds could become a novel class of chiral separation media in the near future.

High-resolution separation performance of poly(caprolactone)diol for challenging isomers of xylenes, phenols and anilines by capillary gas chromatography

Efficient separation of xylenes, phenols and anilines is a big issue in chemical and petroleum industries. This work presents the first example of employing poly (caprolactone) diol (PCL-Diol) as stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separations of these tough isomer mixtures. It showed medium polarity and stronger H-bonding basicity than H-bonding acidity. Impressively, PCL-Diol column exhibited extremely high resolving capability for the isomer mixtures of xylenes, cresols/xylenols, and toluidines/xylidines with good peak shapes. Moreover, it exhibited preferential retention for analytes of a linear alkyl chain, suggesting its shape fitting selectivity for specific analytes. In addition, its separation performance has good repeatability with RSD values on retention times below 0.01% for run to run (n=6), 0.67–0.80% for day to day (n=4) and 3.2–4.4% for column to column (n=4) repeatability, respectively. Furthermore, it was applied for the determination of isomer impurities in real samples, showing good potential for practical use. This work demonstrates the advantageous high-resolution separation performance for challenging isomers and shows its promising future of PCL-Diol-based materials in separation science.

Graphene-ZIF8 composite material as stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separations of aliphatic and aromatic isomers

This work presents the separation performance of graphene-ZIF8 (G-Z) composite material as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography (GC). The G-Z stationary phase achieved high column efficiency of 5000 plates/m determined by n-dodecane (k=1.22) at 120°C and showed weakly polar nature. Importantly, it exhibited high selectivity and resolving capability for branched alkane isomers and aromatic positional isomers, showing clear advantages over the reported neat graphene and ZIF8. In addition, it attained high resolution for geometric cis-/trans-isomers. The G-Z column exhibited good column thermal stability up to 300°C and column repeatability with RSD values of retention times in the range of 0.01–0.19% for intra-day, 0.05–0.88% for inter-day and 0.66–5.6% for between-column, respectively, Moreover, the G-Z column was employed for the determination of minor impurity isomers in real reagent samples, which demonstrates its promising potential in GC applications.

A chiral porous organic cage for molecular recognition using gas chromatography

Molecular organic cages as shape-persistent organic molecules with permanent and accessible cavities have attracted a lot of interest because of their importance as host-guest systems. Herein, we report a chiral porous organic cage (POC) CC9 diluted with a polysiloxane OV-1701 to fabricate a CC9-coated capillary column, which was used for the high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of organic compounds, including positional isomers and racemates. On the CC9-coated capillary column, a large number of racemic compounds such as chiral alcohols, esters, ethers and epoxides can be resolved without derivatization. By comparing the chiral recognition ability of the CC9-coated column with the commercially available β-DEX 120 column and the POC CC3-R coated column recently reported by our group, the CC9-coated column offered good resolution during the separation of some racemates, that were not separated using the β-DEX 120 column or POC CC3-R coated column. Therefore, the CC9-coated column can be complementary to the β-DEX 120 column and CC3-R coated column. The results indicated that the CC9-coated column exhibited great potential for application in the separation of positional isomers and enantiomers with great selectivity, high resolution and good reproducibility.

Novel inorganic mesoporous material with chiral nematic structure derived from nanocrystalline cellulose for high-resolution gas chromatographic separations.

Chiral nematic mesoporous silica (CNMS) has attracted widespread attention due to some unique features, such as its nematic structure, chirality, large pore size, high temperature resistance, low cost, and ease of preparation. We first reported the use of CNMS as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography (GC). The CNMS-coated capillary column not only gives good selectivity for the separation of linear alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and isomers but also offers excellent enantioselectivity for chiral compounds. Compared with enantioseparations on commercial β-DEX 120 and Chirasil-l-Val columns, a CNMS-coated capillary column offers excellent enantioselectivity, chiral recognition complementarity, and the separation of analytes within short elution times. It can also be potentially applied in high-temperature GC at more than 350 °C. This work indicates that CNMS could soon become very attractive for separations.

Bringing GC–MS profiling of steroids into clinical applications

Abnormalities of steroid biosynthesis and excretion are responsible for the development and prevention of endocrine disorders, such as metabolic syndromes, cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases. Due to their biochemical roles in endocrine system, qualitative and quantitative analysis of steroid hormones in various biological specimens is needed to elucidate their altered expression. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based steroid profiling can reveal the states of metabolites in biological systems and provide comprehensive insights by allowing comparisons between metabolites present in cells, tissues, or organisms. In addition, the activities of many enzymes related to steroid metabolism often lead to hormonal imbalances that have serious consequences, and which are responsible for the progress of hormone-dependent diseases. In contrast to immunoaffinity-based enzyme assays, MS-based methods are more reproducible in quantification. In particular, high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separation of steroids with similar chemical structures can be achieved to provide rapid and reproducible results with excellent purification. GC-MS profiling therefore has been widely used for steroid analysis, and offers the basis for techniques that can be applied to large-scale clinical studies. Recent advances in analytical technologies combined with inter-disciplinary strategies, such as physiology and bioinformatics, will help in understanding the biochemical roles of steroid hormones. Therefore, comprehensive analytical protocols in steroid analysis for different research purposes may contribute to the elucidation of complex metabolic processes relevant to steroid function in many endocrine disorders, and in the identification of diagnostic biomarkers.

Indoor VOCs from Religious and Ritual Burning Practices in India

Measurements of selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs), known as markers of emissions resulting from burning practices using natural- and synthetic biomaterials, have been carried out in major religious/ritual-indoors in India. Four different religious/ritual-indoors were selected for monitoring purposes: 1) Hindu Marriage Places (MP), 2) Muslim Holy Shrines (MG), 3) Buddhist Temples (BT), and 4) Hindu Temples (HT). One pure residential-indoor (RESID) site was also examined for comparison studies. Indoor VOCs sampling was carried out throughout the three seasons of summer, fall and winter of the calendar year of 2012–2013 in Raipur, India. VOCs samples, collected by passive sampling over a 48-h period, were analyzed using thermal desorption (TD), followed by high-resolution gas chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric detection (GC/MS). A total of 14 volatile organic compounds (n-hexane, cyclohexane, n-heptane, noctane, n-nonane, n-decane, n-undecane, styrene, o-xylene, m,p-xylene, 1,2,4-trimethyl benzene, ethylbenzene, benzene, and toluene.) were quantified. The annual mean concentrations for total VOCs (TVOCs) were 216.61 ± 75.15, 656.34 ± 220.82, 681.75 ± 219.83, 129.51 ± 45.24 and 82.67 ± 40.96 µg/m 3 for MP, MG, BT, HT and RESID respectively. The results were found to be higher than the prescribed standards and earlier reported indoor VOCs levels. Indoor/outdoor ratios (I/O), correlation analyses, seasonal variations and indoor/outdoor contributions to the measured levels are also investigated.
