Polymorphic Localized Heterostructure Design for High-Performance Amorphous/Nanocrystalline Composite Film.

Analogous to linear dielectric, amorphous perovskite dielectrics characterized of high breakdown strength and low remanent polarization possess in-depth application in the sea, land, and air fields. Amorphous engineering is a common approach to balance the inverse relationship between polarization and breakdown strength in dielectric ceramic capacitor, however, the low polarization is the major barrier limiting the improvement of energy storage density. To address this concern, the polymorphic localized heterostructure confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) and HADDF images is constructed in BaTiO3-Bi(Ni0.5Zr0.5)O3 amorphous/nanocrystalline composite film with SiO2 addition (BT-BNZ-xS, x = 3, 5, 7, 10 mol%). The stability of nanocrystalline region achieved by Si-rich transition region and the enhancive ultra-short-range ordering in the amorphous region synergistically result in large breakdown strength and nonhysteretic polarized response. This polymorphic localized heterostructure optimizes the thermal stability in a wide temperature range and contributes ultrahigh energy storage density of 149.9 J cm-3 with markedly enhanced efficiency of 79.0%. This study provides a universal strategy to design the polarization behavior in other amorphous perovskite-based dielectrics.

Tuning the End Alkyl Chain of the Ether Solvent to Stabilize the Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces in the NCM-Li Battery.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) combined with a high-voltage nickel-rich cathode show great potential in meeting the growing need for high energy density. The lack of advanced electrolytes has been a major obstacle in the commercialization of high-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs), as these electrolytes need to effectively support both a stable lithium metal anode (LMA) and a high-voltage cathode (>4 V vs Li+/Li). In this work, by extending the two terminal methyl groups in DIGDME and TEGDME to n-butyl groups, we design a new weakly solvating electrolyte (2 M LIFSI+TEGDBE) that enables the stable cycling of NMC83 (LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2) cathodes. The NMC83 cell exhibits a high and stable Coulombic efficiency (CE) of over 99%, as well as capacity retention of approximately 99.8% after 100 cycles at 0.3 C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (XPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images revealed that the anion species decomposed first, resulting in the formation of a cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) film predominantly consisting of decomposition products from the anions on the positive electrode surface. This work links the functional group of solvents with the solvation structure and electrochemical performance of ether-based electrolytes, providing a distinctive sight to design advanced electrolytes for high-energy-density LMBs.

Cryo-EM combined with image deconvolution to determine ZIF-8 crystal structure

Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials with tunable properties, exhibiting great potential in gas adsorption, separation and catalysis.[1, 2] It is challenging to visualize MOFs with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) due to their inherent instability under electron beam irradiation. Here, we employ cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to capture images of MOF ZIF-8, revealing inverted-space structural information at a resolution of up to about 1.7 Å and enhancing its critical electron dose to around 20 e-/Å2. In addition, it is confirmed by electron-beam irradiation experiments that the high voltage could effectively mitigate the radiolysis, and the structure of ZIF-8 is more stable along the [100] direction under electron beam irradiation. Meanwhile, since the high-resolution electron microscope images is modulated by contrast transfer function (CTF) and it is difficult to determine the positions corresponding to the atomic columns directly from the images. We employ image deconvolution to eliminate the impact of CTF and obtain the structural images of ZIF-8. As a result, the heavy atom Zn and the organic imidazole ring within the organic framework can be distinguished from structural images.

Evaluating nickel removal efficacy of Filtralite under laboratory conditions: Implications for sustainable urban drainage systems

Our study deals with the critical issue of heavy metal pollution in urban runoff; we focused particularly on the threat posed by heavy metals such as nickel to living organisms and water resources owing to their toxicity at low concentrations and non-biodegradability. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of Filtralite, a filtration medium with excellent hydraulic properties, in removing nickel from water through laboratory experiments and advanced simulation tools. We analysed the geochemical processes involved in nickel removal, including precipitation and adsorption. Importantly, we implemented an innovative approach for numerical modelling using HP1, by combining HYDRUS-1D and PHREEQC for modelling solute transport in porous media and geochemical reactions, respectively. The experimental results revealed that the Filtralite-laden column achieved a removal efficiency of 93.5 % for injected nickel. We observed a significant increase in the effluent pH from 7.0 to 11.5 during the interaction with Filtralite, affecting the solubility of the nickel phases. The model showed the highest nickel concentration in the initial column layers because of rapid chemical precipitation and adsorption upon contact with Filtralite. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the presence of amorphous precipitates around the soil particles, aligning with the changes in pH. This study contributes significantly to environmental engineering and urban water management by introducing an innovative numerical model in HP1 to accurately simulate the removal of nickel using Filtralite. These findings validate the efficiency of Filtralite in extracting nickel from aqueous solutions. Thus, Filtralite is a strong candidate for inclusion in sustainable urban drainage systems.

A deconvolution analysis strategy on the thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides: Complementary correlations between physicochemical variations and thermokinetic analyses

A variety of physicochemical analyses were systematically conducted on the complex thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides, and deconvolution analysis strategy was utilized in elucidating the reconstitution process. The thermal analysis of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides indicated that approximately 27.8 % weight loss, three weight loss peaks and two pronounced endothermic phenomena were detected via thermogravimetry, differential thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. In the thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides, scanning electron microscopy images indicated that the layered structure gradually collapsed, fractured into pieces, and partially melted. Meanwhile, significant X-ray diffraction peak broadening phenomena were detected and further confirmed by the d-spacing values in high-resolution transmission electron microscope images, which were mainly caused by the lattice expansion effect and the heterogeneous microstrain effect. Three reactions were deconvolved from the differential thermogravimetry curves, and the thermokinetic models of Reaction 2 indicated that volatile components in the form of H2O and CO2 escaped from the solid-state residuals via a one-dimensional diffusion reaction model. The major products in solid-state residuals were cubic Cobalt(III) oxide and Iron(II, III) oxide. The thermokinetic models played a complementary role in elucidating the physicochemical variations that occurred throughout the thermoreconstitution process of Co/Fe layered double hydroxides.

SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein Stimulates Macropinocytosis in Murine and Human Macrophages via PKC-NADPH Oxidase Signaling.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). While recent studies have demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 may enter kidney and colon epithelial cells by inducing receptor-independent macropinocytosis, it remains unknown whether this process also occurs in cell types directly relevant to SARS-CoV-2-associated lung pneumonia, such as alveolar epithelial cells and macrophages. The goal of our study was to investigate the ability of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein subunits to stimulate macropinocytosis in human alveolar epithelial cells and primary human and murine macrophages. Flow cytometry analysis of fluid-phase marker internalization demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 spike protein subunits S1, the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of S1, and S2 stimulate macropinocytosis in both human and murine macrophages in an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-independent manner. Pharmacological and genetic inhibition of macropinocytosis substantially decreased spike-protein-induced fluid-phase marker internalization in macrophages both in vitro and in vivo. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging confirmed that spike protein subunits promote the formation of membrane ruffles on the dorsal surface of macrophages. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 spike protein stimulated macropinocytosis via NADPH oxidase 2 (Nox2)-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In addition, inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC) and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) in macrophages blocked SARS-CoV-2 spike-protein-induced macropinocytosis. To our knowledge, these results demonstrate for the first time that SARS-CoV-2 spike protein subunits stimulate macropinocytosis in macrophages. These results may contribute to a better understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 pathogenesis.

A FRACTAL-BASED OIL TRANSPORT MODEL WITH UNCERTAINTY REDUCTION FOR A MULTI-SCALE SHALE PORE SYSTEM

The challenges of modeling shale oil transport are numerous and include strong solid-fluid interactions, fluid rheology, the multi-scale nature of the pore structure problem, and the different pore types involved. Until now, theoretical studies have not fully considered shale oil transport mechanisms and multi-scale pore structure properties. In this study, we propose a fractal-based oil transport model with uncertainty reduction for a multi-scale shale pore system. The fractal properties of the shale pore system are obtained using high-resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging combined with laboratory core sample gas permeability measurements to reduce the model uncertainty. This fractal-based oil transport model accounts for boundary slippage, fluid rheology, the adsorption layer, and different pore types. We further pinpoint the effects of the fractal properties (pore fractal dimension, tortuosity fractal dimension), the shale pore properties (pore type, pore size, total organic carbon in volume), and the fluid properties (yield stress, liquid slippage, adsorption layer) on the shale oil permeability and mobile oil saturation using the proposed model. The results reveal that the size of the inorganic pores has the largest influence on the shale oil transport properties, followed by the yield stress, tortuosity fractal dimension, and the fractal dimension of the inorganic pores.

Nanoscale investigations of femtosecond laser induced nanogratings in optical glasses.

Femtosecond (fs) laser irradiation inside transparent materials has drawn considerable interest over the past two decades. More specifically, self-assembled nanogratings, induced by fs laser direct writing (FLDW) inside glass, enable a broad range of potential applications in optics, photonics, or microfluidics. In this work, a comprehensive study of nanogratings formed inside fused silica by FLDW is presented based on high-resolution electron microscopy imaging techniques. These nanoscale investigations reveal that the intrinsic structure of nanogratings is composed of oblate nanopores, shaped into nanoplanes, regularly spaced and oriented perpendicularly to the laser polarization. These nanoporous layers are forced-organized by light, resulting in a pseudo-organized spacing at the sub-wavelength scale, and observed in a wide range of optical glasses. In light of the current state of the art, we discuss the imprinting of nanoporous layers under thermomechanical effects induced by a plasma-mediated nanocavitation process.

Insight into the effect of synthesis parameters on the properties of graphene quantum dots for theranostic application

Ultra-small size and tunable optical properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) make them potentially suitable for theranostic applications. This investigation focuses on the effect of process parameters for the synthesis of GQDs of desirable optical properties for biomedical applications. The effect of the raw materials (graphene oxide sheets, glucose, and starch), reaction temperature (170 to 200 °C), and reaction time (3 to 6 h) was investigated on GQDs prepared through hydrothermal treatment. The dispersion of GQDs was characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV–visible, fluorescence, Raman, and X-ray photon spectroscopic techniques. The effect of the solution temperature and pH on the fluorescence properties of GQDs was also studied. The small hydrodynamic diameter (8.57 ± 1.47 nm) was observed with GQDs prepared from glucose using hydrothermal treatment time of 4 h at 190 °C (GQDs-D). The GQDs-D showed blue fluorescence (λem= 460 nm) with a quantum yield (QY) 67.09 ± 1.25%. The fluorescence characteristic of the GQDs was unchanged up to 6 months during storage at room temperature. GQDs-D revealed their antioxidant nature with a DPPH scavenging activity of 15.08 ± 2.07%. Despite having relatively low DPPH scavenging activity, excellent hemocompatibility (0.23 ± 0.04%) and colloidal stability against bovine serum albumin (BSA) showed GQDs-D as a safe nanocarrier for theranostic application. This was further substantiated with circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, which exhibited a preserved α-helical structure of BSA by GQDs-D. High-resolution transmission electron microscopic image of GQDs-D showed an average particle size of 5.70 nm and homogeneous particle distribution between 2–8 nm. Conclusively, all the results revealed the potential of GQDs-D for theranostic application.

Eco-friendly synthesized manganese dioxide nanoparticles using Tridax procumbens as potent antimicrobial and dye degrading agent

Manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO2 NPs) were synthesized via a typical green synthesis method involving Tridax procumbens (TP) leaf extract extraction and utilization. The as-prepared material was further characterized using various physio-chemical methods to comprehend its structural, morphological, and optical properties. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) reveals a tetragonal system with a space group of I 41/a m d, clearly indicating the presence of phytochemicals (impurity peaks at 25.46° and 54.92° diffraction angles). The calculated crystalline size of the sample was found to be 43 nm. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) results confirm the precursors of the as-prepared sample, also revealing the agglomerated structure. Furthermore, deeper morphology and crystallinity of the as-prepared MnO2 NPs have been studied through High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HR-TEM) images, which affirms the information about calculated d-spacing value (0.328 nm) and confirming crystallinity through Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) image. Absorption studies were conducted on as-prepared samples, which show a characteristic band at 257 nm, affirming the formation of MnO2 NPs. The same was utilized to evaluate the band gap energy (4.46 eV) through the Kubelka-Munk function. To further confirm the calculated particle size and stability of the as-prepared MnO2 NPs, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) analysis was conducted, and the results revealed that the particles’ size was 58.72 nm. The prepared samples were subjected to study antimicrobial studies against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacterial species. The inhibition zone of the antibacterial disc soaked with as-prepared MnO2 NPs showed a significant increase compared to the TP leaf extract and commercially available MnO2 NPs. Also, the degradation of the Titan Yellow dye solution was conducted employing UV irradiation, and it was found that the maximum degradation percentage was attained after 120 min of irradiation. Furthermore, the pH effect on %degradation and reusability test were also conducted. The obtained results showed a pinnacle pH point of 4 where the degradation was maximum and found a decent decrement in %degradation after 4th usage. All the acquired results were utilized to study the degradation reaction kinetics, which was found that the present degradation holds good for both 0th and 1st order kinetic equations. Henceforth, the acquired results suggest that the green synthesized MnO2 NPs are potent candidates for antimicrobial and degrading activities.

(Invited) Structure Reconstruction Strategy for High-Energy Lithium Ion Batteries without Capacity Sacrifice

Lithium nickel oxides (LiNiO2) is considered to be a promising high-energy-density cathode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)1-3. However, its inherent Li off-stoichiometry composition and structural deterioration under various phase transition usually bring about low initial capacity and rapid capacity decay4,5. To stimulate the high capacity and extend the lifespan for LiNiO2 in LIBs, the structure reconstruction method is applied to modify the cathode materials by Mo regulating (Mo-LiNiO2). The cross section high-resolution transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) images show that the concentration of Mo is gradually decreased from the surface to the bulk center. Correspondingly, the concentrated Ni2+ ions in the surface of Mo-LiNiO2 build up the rock-salt phase layer with 5-20 nm in the surface, which plays the pinner effect based on in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns to enable excellent mechanical and structural reversibility for the layered Mo-LiNiO2 upon cycling. Finally, electrochemical results show that the modified cathode materials (Mo-LiNiO2) has a high capacity (~235 mAh g–1 at 0.1C) and the stable cycle performance (~94% for 90 cycles at 1C) as shown in Figure 1. The Mo-LiNiO2 cathode can provide high capacity and cycle stability with low material cost, which is suitable for the long service life of electric vehicles, further realizing a commercially viable cathode materials for LIBs.

Bio-inspired electrode materials from Prosopis Juliflora Wood provide 2.2 V with KOH/water/DMF/PVA electrolyte for supercapacitor applications

Highly porous carbon material was prepared from Prosopis Juliflora Wood by a simple chemical activation method for different ratios of carbon/KOH at the carbonization temperature of 800°C. The synthesized carbon was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), RAMAN and high-resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM) that ascertain the existence of highly porous activated carbon. High-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images clearly show the porous structure. Electrochemical properties of synthesized Activated carbon electrode material were measured with 3 M KOH/Water/DMF electrolyte in three-electrode system. It shows a superior specific capacitance and cyclic stability of 98% up to 5000 cycles. Asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with V-5 sample and Graphite as positive and negative electrode materials, respectively, using KOH/Water/DMF/PVA as Electrolyte. The fabricated device displays a high energy density of 61.54 W h kg−1 with a power density of 3500 W kg−1 accompanied by good cyclic stability of 92% of capacitance retention over 5000 charge–discharge cycles. This work proides a convenient method to prepare the high value added electrode materials for future wearable and portable electronic devices.

Nanocrystalline cerium tungstate and its dysprosium doped forms with high NIR reflectance

Nanocrystalline cerium tungstate and its 6 % dysprosium doped nanocrystals have been prepared by the chemical precipitation followed by the heat treatment at 600 °C. X-ray diffraction studies confirm the crystalline formation of the cerium tungstate phase without any secondary phases occurring due to dysprosium doping. The doping caused a small variation in the crystallite size. Transmission electron microscopic images show the agglomeration of the particles and the high-resolution transmission electron microscope images exhibit the different planes of the polycrystalline samples. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis confirms the presence of elements present in the material. The characteristic vibrations due to the W-O-W and O-W-O stretching modes characteristics of tetrahedral tungstates (WO42-) are confirmed from Fourier transform infrared spectra. UV–Vis-NIR reflectance studies show high reflectance in the near-infrared region. Also, the samples show high absorption in the visible and ultraviolet regions.

Dual-functional etchants that simultaneously demineralize and stabilize dentin render collagen resistant to degradation for resin bonding.

To develop dual-functional etchants that could demineralize and stabilize dentin collagen simultaneously, and to assess the effects of these etchants on collagen crosslinking, biostability and resin bonding properties under clinically relevant conditions. Dual-functional etchants were prepared by mixing 56% glycolic acid and 17% phosphoric acid and adding 1% of theaflavins (TF) or proanthocyanidins from grape seed extract (GSE). The etchant without crosslinker was used as control. The prepared human dentin specimens were treated with the 3 etchants for 30s and analyzed for chemical interaction using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and resistance of the demineralized layer to collagenase degradation using electron microscopy (EM). Resin-dentin interfacial bonding properties were evaluated after 24h and after 10,000 thermocycling through microtensile bond strength (μTBS), nanoleakage and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity via in situ zymography. Statistical analysis was done using ANOVA and post- hoc Tuckey's test. Compared to control, TF and GSE dual-functional etchants were able to demineralize dentin, induce collagen crosslinking and protect the demineralized layer from collagenase degradation within 30s. High resolution EM images showed better protection with TF etchant compared to GSE. There was a significant reduction in μTBS and an increase in nanoleakage and MMPs activity in control after thermocycling (p<0.05) while these changes weren't seen in dual-functional etchants. Dual-functional etchants, especially TF containing, provide collagen protection against degradation and result in stable μTBS and less nanoleakage and MMPs activity under clinically relevant conditions.

Photocatalytic degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics using chitosan biopolymer functionalized copper oxide nanoparticles prepared by facile sonochemical method

Photocatalytic degradation is an excellent method for removing pharmaceutical residues due to their simplicity, ecological benignity, high efficiency, and exceptional stability. Herein, we demonstrate the sonochemically synthesised chitosan biopolymer functionalized copper oxide nanoparticles as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of fluoroquinolone-based antibiotics. The X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement revealed the formation of single-phase copper oxide (CuO) with a monoclinic structure. The presence of biopolymer functionalization was corroborated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy by observing the -NH2 and -OH functional groups. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopic images inferred that Chitosan functionalized copper oxide (C-CuO) particles are nano-sized with a smooth texture and aggregation-free particles. The strong absorbance and the broad photoluminescence emission in the ultraviolet-visible region confirm the suitability of CuO and C-CuO nanoparticles for photocatalytic applications. The catalytic activity was studied against fluoroquinolone-based antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin under direct sunlight illumination. Interestingly, the C-CuO catalyst demonstrated 71.07 % (@140 min.) and 71.9 % (@60 min.) of degradation for ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, respectively. The obtained photocatalytic activity of the prepared CuO and C-CuO catalysts was superior to the CuO particles prepared by the coprecipitation method (CC-CuO).

Chemical and topological disordering in M23C6 due to irradiation: An atomic-scale observation

To clarify the stability of M23C6 precipitate in steels under irradiation, the chemical and topological disordering behaviors in M23C6 subjected to ion irradiation at elevated temperatures were investigated with the combined application of high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Results show that the duplex structured M23C6 which is the core-crystalline and shell-amorphous was observed in the specimen irradiated at 623 K, nevertheless, no amorphous phase was observed in the specimen irradiated at 673 K. HREM observation confirmed the occurrence of the chemical disordering in irradiated M23C6, and the disordering of W atoms in the M23C6 unit cell was clarified by the peak intensity profile of the atomic column from the HREM image. EELS analyses indicate that no obvious chemical shift was observed by the core-loss spectrum, however, the change in the electron mean free path (λ) due to irradiation was confirmed by the low-loss spectrum, which is related to the formation of both irradiation defects and amorphous phase. It is proposed that the decreased material density upon irradiation is ascribed to the formation of W-vacancy-dominated defect clusters. An obvious change in interatomic distance was not observed in the irradiated M23C6 based on the radical distribution function analysis by extended energy-loss fine structure spectrum. However, the peak intensity decreased by irradiation, confirming the occurrence of chemical and topological disordering, regardless of the carbide being crystalline or amorphous.

Effect of self and extrinsic encapsulation on electron resilience of porous 2D polymer nanosheets

Despite the exceptional resolution in aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscope (AC-HRTEM) images of inorganic two-dimensional (2D) materials, achieving high-resolution imaging of organic 2D materials remains a daunting challenge due to their low electron resilience. Optimizing the critical dose (the electron exposure, the material can accept before it is noticeably damaged) is vital to mitigate this challenge. An understanding of electron resilience in porous crystalline 2D polymers including the effect of sample thickness has not been derived thus far. It is assumed, that additional layers of the sample form a cage around inner layers, which are preventing fragments from escaping into the vacuum and enabling recombination. In the literature this so called caging effect has been reported for perylene and pythalocyanine. In this work we determine the critical dose of a porous, triazine-based 2D polymer as function of the sample thickness. The results show that the caging effect should not be generalized to more sophisticated polymer systems. We argue that pore channels in the framework structure serve as escape routes for free fragments preventing the caging effect and thus showing surprisingly a thickness-independent critical dose. Moreover, we demonstrate that graphene encapsulation prevents fragment escape and results in an increase in the critical electron dose and unit-cell image resolution.

PS-Net: Human perception-guided segmentation network for EM cell membrane.

Cell membrane segmentation in electron microscopy (EM) images is a crucial step in EM image processing. However, while popular approaches have achieved performance comparable to that of humans on low-resolution EM datasets, they have shown limited success when applied to high-resolution EM datasets. The human visual system, on the other hand, displays consistently excellent performance on both low and high resolutions. To better understand this limitation, we conducted eye movement and perceptual consistency experiments. Our data showed that human observers are more sensitive to the structure of the membrane while tolerating misalignment, contrary to commonly used evaluation criteria. Additionally, our results indicated that the human visual system processes images in both global-local and coarse-to-fine manners. Based on these observations, we propose a computational framework for membrane segmentation that incorporates these characteristics of human perception. This framework includes a novel evaluation metric, the perceptual Hausdorff distance (PHD), and an end-to-end network called the PHD-guided segmentation network (PS-Net) that is trained using adaptively tuned PHD loss functions and a multiscale architecture. Our subjective experiments showed that the PHD metric is more consistent with human perception than other criteria, and our proposed PS-Net outperformed state-of-the-art methods on both low and high resolution EM image datasets as well as other natural image datasets. Heating Effects on Nanofabricated Plasmonic Dimers with Interconnects

Plasmonic nanostructures with electrical connections have potential applications as new electro-optic devices due to their strong light–matter interactions. Plasmonic dimers with nanogaps between adjacent nanostructures are especially good at enhancing local electromagnetic (EM) fields at resonance for improved performance. In this study, we use optical extinction measurements and high-resolution electron microscopy imaging to investigate the thermal stability of electrically interconnected plasmonic dimers and their optical and morphological properties. Experimental measurements and finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations are combined to characterize temperature effects on the plasmonic properties of large arrays of Au nanostructures on glass substrates. Experiments show continuous blue shifts of extinction peaks for heating up to 210°C. Microscopy measurements reveal these peak shifts are due to morphological changes that shrink nanorods and increase nanogap distances. Simulations of the nanostructures before and after heating find good agreement with experiments. Results show that plasmonic properties are maintained after thermal processing, but peak shifts need to be considered for device design.

Diffusion Welding for TC4 Titanium Alloy/T2 Copper with Vanadium Foil

TC4 titanium alloy (TC4) was vacuum diffusion welded to T2 copper (T2) with vanadium (V) foil as an interlayer. The influence of process parameters on elemental diffusion behavior, microstructure evolution, and shear performance of welded joints was explored. An obvious solid-solution diffusion zone appeared in the welded interface between TC4 and V, but no distinct diffusion zone formed in the joint interface of V/T2. The solid-solution phases of (Ti6, V)ss, (Ti3, V)ss, and (Ti, V7)ss appeared in the interface of TC4/V. The crystallographic orientations of (Ti6, V)ss, (Ti3, V)ss, and (Ti, V7)ss phases in high-resolution transmission electron microscope images were (002), (201), and (121), respectively. The lattice mismatch between (Ti6, V)ss and (Ti3, V)ss was calculated to be 11.9%. The activation energy to form a stable solid solution between titanium and vanadium was 226.6 kJ/mol. The highest shear strength of the welded joint reached 160 MPa, obtained at 860°C (1580°F) for 60 min. The joint fractured along the interface of V/T2, illustrating that the solid-solution structure between Ti and V was stronger than the metallurgical bonding between V and Cu. The fracture surface of the welded joints revealed a river pattern and ladder topography, representing a cleavage fracture mode. FCC-Cu, BCC-V, and β-Ti were detected on both fracture surfaces of the TC4 titanium alloy and T2 pure copper sides. The influence of welding temperature on the diffusion of V in Ti was greater than on Ti in V, and Ti and Cu diffused faster than V in the joint.
