Urinary volatile organic compound metabolites and COPD among US adults: mixture, interaction and mediation analysis

BackgroundVolatile organic compounds (VOCs) encompass hundreds of high production volume chemicals and have been reported to be associated with adverse respiratory outcomes such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, research on the combined toxic effects of exposure to various VOCs on COPD is lacking. We aimed to assess the effect of VOC metabolite mixture on COPD risk in a large population sample.MethodsWe assessed the effect of VOC metabolite mixture on COPD risk in 5997 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2020 (pre-pandemic) using multivariate logistic regression, Bayesian weighted quantile sum regression (BWQS), quantile-based g-Computation method (Qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). We explored whether these associations were mediated by white blood cell (WBC) count and total bilirubin.ResultsIn the logistic regression model, we observed a significantly increased risk of COPD associated with 9 VOC metabolites. Conversely, N-acetyl-S-(benzyl)-L-cysteine (BMA) and N-acetyl-S-(n-propyl)-L-cysteine (BPMA) showed insignificant negative correlations with COPD risk. The overall mixture exposure demonstrated a significant positive relationship with COPD in both the BWQS model (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.30, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06, 1.58) and BKMR model, and with marginal significance in the Qgcomp model (adjusted OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 0.98, 1.52). All three models indicated a significant effect of the VOC metabolite mixture on COPD in non-current smokers. WBC count mediated 7.1% of the VOC mixture associated-COPD in non-current smokers.ConclusionsOur findings provide novel evidence suggesting that VOCs may have adverse associations with COPD in the general population, with N, N- Dimethylformamide and 1,3-Butadiene contributing most. These findings underscore the significance of understanding the potential health risks associated with VOC mixture and emphasize the need for targeted interventions to mitigate the adverse effects on COPD risk.

Exposure to benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles in Czech male population and its associations with biomarkers of liver function, serum lipids and oxidative stress.

Benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles (BTs) are high-production volume chemicals as well as widely distributed emerging pollutants with potential health risk. However, information about human exposure to BTs and associated health outcomes is limited. We aimed to characterise exposure to BTs among Czech men, including possible occupational exposure among firefighters, its predictors, and its associations with liver function, serum lipids and oxidative stress. 165participants (including 110 firefighters) provided urine and blood samples that were used to quantify the urinary levels of 8 BTs (high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry), and 4 liver enzymes, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. Linear regression was used to assess associations with population characteristics and biomarkers of liver function, serum lipids and oxidative stress. Regression models were adjusted for potential confounding variables and false discovery rate procedure was applied to account for multiplicity. The BTs ranged from undetected up to 46.8ng/mL. 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole was the most predominant compound (detection frequency 83%; median 1.95ng/mL). 1-methyl-benzotriazole (1M-BTR) was measured in human samples for the first time, with a detection frequency 77% and median 1.75ng/mL. Professional firefighters had lower urinary 1M-BTR compared to non-firefighters. Urinary 1M-BTR was associated with levels of γ-glutamyl transferase (β = -17.54%; 95% CI: -26.127,-7.962). This is the first study to investigate BT exposure in Central Europe, including potentially exposed firefighters. The findings showed a high prevalence of BTs in the study population, the relevance of 1M-BTR as a new biomarker of exposure, and an urgent need for further research into associated adverse health outcomes.

Analysis and remediation of phthalates in aquatic matrices: current perspectives.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are high production volume chemicals used extensively as plasticizers, to increase the flexibility of the main polymer. They are reported to leach into their surroundings from plastic products and are now a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Phthalate levels have been determined in several environmental matrices, especially in water. These levels serve as an indicator of plasticizer abuse and plastic pollution, and also serve as a route of exposure to different species including humans. Reports published on effects of different PAEs on experimental models demonstrate their carcinogenic, teratogenic, reproductive, and endocrine disruptive effects. Therefore, regular monitoring and remediation of environmental water samples is essential to ascertain their hazard quotient and daily exposure levels. This review summarises the extraction and detection techniques available for phthalate analysis in water samples such as chromatography, biosensors, immunoassays, and spectroscopy. Current remediation strategies for phthalate removal such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, and microbial degradation have also been highlighted.

Novel method for rapid monitoring of OPFRs by LLE and GC–MS as a tool for assessing biodegradation: validation and applicability

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are high-production volume chemicals widely present in environmental compartments. The presence of water-soluble OPFRs (tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), and triethyl phosphate (TEP)) in water compartments evidences the struggle of conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to effectively eliminate these toxic compounds. This study reports for the first time the use of white-rot fungi as a promising alternative for the removal of these OPFRs. To accomplish this, a simple and cost-efficient quantification method for rapid monitoring of these contaminants’ concentrations by GC–MS while accounting for matrix effects was developed. The method proved to be valid and reliable for all the tested parameters. Sample stability was examined under various storage conditions, showing the original samples to be stable after 60 days of freezing, while post-extraction storage techniques were also effective. Finally, a screening of fungal degraders while assessing the influence of the glucose regime on OPFR removal was performed. Longer chain organophosphate flame retardants, TBP and TBEP, could be easily and completely removed by the fungus Ganoderma lucidum after only 4 days. This fungus also stood out as the sole organism capable of partially degrading TCEP (35% removal). The other chlorinated compound, TCPP, was more easily degraded and 70% of its main isomer was removed by T. versicolor. However, chlorinated compounds were only partially degraded under nutrient-limiting conditions. TEP was either not degraded or poorly degraded, and it is likely that it is a transformation product from another OPFR’s degradation. These results suggest that degradation of chlorinated compounds is dependent on the concentration of the main carbon source and that more polar OPFRs are less susceptible to degradation, given that they are less accessible to radical removal by fungi. Overall, the findings of the present study pave the way for further planned research and a potential application for the degradation of these contaminants in real wastewaters.Graphical

Optimization of the ultrasound-assisted extraction method for determining high production volume chemicals in fish liver and skin samples

The aquatic ecosystem is one of the most delicate environments, housing a diverse range of organisms, including fish, all of which are exposed to a wide variety of pollutants. The accumulation of these harmful substances in fish, which are part of the human diet, presents a significant health risk to humans. In our study, we have optimized an extraction technique to determine the presence of 25 high production volume chemicals in liver and skin samples taken from commonly consumed fish species. We have employed ultrasound-assisted extraction in conjunction with gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to achieve this goal. Apparent recoveries of the method ranged from 50% to 111% for both sample types with some exceptions such as most of the benzosulfonamides and benzothiazole. Additionally, the method's detection and quantification limits varied from 0.1 to 1.7 ng g−1 (dry weight, d.w) and 0.2–4.5 ng g−1 (d.w), respectively. Our investigation focused on three frequently consumed fish species in Tarragona: sea bass, sea bream, and turbot. Almost all of the samples we analysed contained traces of contaminants, with phthalates being the most commonly detected. The highest concentrations were observed for diethyl phthalate, with levels peaking at 8350 ng g−1 (d.w.). Organophosphate esters, such as triethyl phosphate and tributyl phosphate, also showed notable presence, with peak concentrations of 93.6 and 34.0 ng g−1 (d.w.), respectively.

Occurrence of high production volume chemicals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban sites close to industrial areas. Human exposure and risk assessment

Evaluating the occurrence of high production volume chemicals (HPVCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the air is important because they carry a carcinogenic risk and can lead to respiratory or endocrine problems. Examples of HPVCs are organophosphate esters, benzosulfonamides, benzothiazoles, phthalate esters (PAEs), phenolic antioxidants and ultraviolet stabilizers. In this paper we develop a multi-residue method for determining HPVCs and PAHs in air samples via pressurized liquid extraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Air samples were collected by active sampling with high volume samplers using quartz fiber filter for the particulate matter (PM10) and polyurethane foams for gas phase. The compounds found at the highest concentrations were PAEs, with a concentration of up to 24 ng m−3 of DEHP in gas phase and up to 109 ng m−3 of DEHA in PM10. Non-carcinogenic risk assessment results ranged from 9.7E-05 to 9.5E-03 for most of the compounds studied. On the other hand, the results for carcinogenic risk showed that PAHs made the highest contribution.

Critical Assessment of 2-Methylpyridine: A Cause for Renewed Concern

2-Methylpyridine (2Mp) is a refractory xenotoxin naturally found in coal/crude oil reserves and used anthropogenically as a solvent/intermediate in agrochemical, pharmaceutical, and textile industries on a large scale. It has been classified as a hazardous pollutant (USEPA and EU) and a High Production Volume chemical (USEPA). Limits were set initially (1991) to curb the manufacture of 2Mp within the US, which indeed had led to a decrease in its usage volume from 1991 to 2008. However, no such limit was found on the import of 2Mp into the US, which has led to a hundred-fold increase in 2Mp usage in the last decade. This implies that 2Mp was now being imported from developing countries apart from being produced locally. This trend is directly related to the increased interest in the treatment of 2Mp in the last decade and a half (2007–2023) in developing countries like India, China, Jordan, Russia, Iran, and South Korea. Further, there is no availability of monitoring data in developing countries. There is thus an immediate need to highlight 2Mp as a pollutant of “re-emerging” concern. This review discusses historic and current literature on 2Mp, so that policy makers and researchers alike may focus their attention and update the official hazard standards to incorporate the new threat posed by 2Mp. This review summarizes the synthesis, usage trend, hazardous categorizations, toxicity, effluent discharge standards, incidence case-studies, contact mechanisms, quantification, remediation, and recovery techniques used for 2Mp.

Fingerprinting of chlorinated paraffins and their transformation products in plastic consumer products

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) can be classified according to their length as short-chain (SC, C10–C13), medium-chain (MC, C14–C17) and long-chain (LC, C ≥ 18) CPs. Technical CP-mixtures can contain a wide range of carbon- (C-, nC = 10–30) and chlorine- (Cl-, nCl = 3–19) homologues. CPs are high-production volume chemicals (>106 t/y). They are used as flame-retardants, plasticizers and coolant fluids. Due to the persistence, bioaccumulation, long-range environmental transport potential and adverse effects, SCCPs are regulated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention. Transformation of CPs can lead to the formation of unsaturated compounds such as chlorinated mono- (CO), di- (CdiO) and tri-olefins (CtriO). Such transformation reactions can occur at different stages of CP manipulation providing characteristic C-/Cl-homologue distributions. All this results in unique patterns that collectively create a fingerprint, which can be distinguished from CP-containing samples. Therefore, CP-fingerprinting can develop into a promising tool for future source apportionment studies and with it, the reduction of environmental burden of CPs and hazards to humans. Herein, CP-containing plastics were studied to establish fingerprints and develop this method. We analyzed four household items by reverse-phase liquid-chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer with an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source and an Orbitrap mass analyzer (RP-LC-APCI-Orbitrap-MS) operated at a resolution of 120000 (FWHM at m/z 200). MS-data of different CP-, CO-, CdiO- and CtriO-homologues were efficiently processed with an R-based automatic mass spectra evaluation routine (RASER). From the 16720 ions searched for, up to 4300 ions per sample were assigned to 340 C-/Cl-homologues of CPs and their transformation products. Specific fingerprints were deduced from the C-/Cl-homologues distributions, the carbon- (nC) and chlorine- (nCl) numbers and saturation degree. These fingerprints were compared with the ones obtained by a GC-ECNI-Orbitrap-MS method.

Seafood consumption as a source of exposure to high production volume chemicals: A comparison between catalonia and the Canary Islands.

Seafood plays an important role in diet because of its health benefits. However, the fact that chemical compounds such as high production volume chemicals may be present in seafood means that its consumption can be a potential risk for population. To assess the occurrence of HPVs and estimate the exposure and risk associated with their consumption, specimens of the most consumed seafood species in Catalonia and the Canary Islands, Spain, were collected and analysed. Results showed higher levels of HPVs in samples from Catalonia and a prevalence of phthalate esters and benzenesulfonamides over the other target compounds in samples from both locations. Multivariate analysis showed spatial differences between the mean concentration profiles of HPVs for the samples from Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Exposures were higher for the samples from Catalonia, although the intake of HPVs via seafood was not of any real concern in either of the locations.

Narrowing the analytical gap for water-soluble polymers: A novel trace-analytical method and first quantitative occurrence data for polyethylene oxide in surface and wastewater

Water-soluble polymers (WSPs) like polyethylene oxide (PEO) have annual production volumes ranging from thousands to millions of tonnes and are used in a wide variety of applications that enable a release into the aquatic environment. Despite these facts, a lack of quantitative trace-analytical methods for WSPs prevents the comprehensive study of their environmental occurrence. Here, size exclusion chromatography was hyphenated with electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry. An all-ion fragmentation approach for the formation of diagnostic fragments independent of molecular weight, charge state, and ion species was used to quantify PEO and its derivatives in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and surface water samples. Despite its inherent biodegradability, PEO concentrations found in the samples analysed ranged from <LOD-11 μg/L for surface waters (11/18 samples >1 μg/L) and reached up to 20 μg/L (effluent) and 400 μg/L (influent) for WWTPs. A substantial shift in molecular weight ranges was observed between influent and effluent, pointing towards a molecular weight fraction between 1.3 and 4 kDa being dominant in the effluent. Due to an assumed size exclusion during sample enrichment, information on the MW-distribution of PEO is limited to MW < 55 kDa. The high concentrations widely detected for a readily biodegradable WSP such as PEO, raise strong concerns about the occurrence and fate of recalcitrant WSPs in the aquatic environment. The method presented herein may provide the tools necessary to assess the burden of these high production volume chemicals and the risk they may pose.

Maternal urinary bisphenols and phthalates in relation to estimated fetal weight across mid to late pregnancy

BackgroundBisphenols and phthalates are high production volume chemicals used as additives in a variety of plastic consumer products leading to near ubiquitous human exposure. These chemicals have established endocrine disrupting properties and have been linked to a range of adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes. Here, we investigated exposure in relation to fetal growth. MethodsParticipants included 855 mother-fetal pairs enrolled in the population-based New York University Children’s Health and Environment Study (NYU CHES). Bisphenols and phthalates were measured in maternal urine collected repeatedly during pregnancy. Analyses included 15 phthalate metabolites and 2 bisphenols that were detected in 50 % of participants or more. Fetal biometry data were extracted from electronic ultrasonography records and estimated fetal weight (EFW) was predicted for all fetuses at 20, 30, and 36 weeks gestation. We used quantile regression adjusted for covariates to model exposure-outcome relations across percentiles of fetal weight at each gestational timepoint. We examined sex differences using stratified models. ResultsFew statistically significant associations were observed across chemicals, gestational time periods, percentiles, and sexes. However, within gestational timepoints, we found that among females, the molar sums of the phthalates DiNP and DnOP were generally associated with decreases in EFW among smaller babies and increases in EFW among larger babies. Among males, the opposite trend was observed. However, confidence intervals were generally wide at the tails of the distribution. ConclusionIn this sample, exposure to bisphenols and phthalates was associated with small sex-specific shifts in fetal growth; however, few associations were observed at the median of fetal weight and confidence intervals in the tails were wide. Findings were strongest for DiNP and DnOP, which are increasingly used as replacements for DEHP, supporting the need for future research on these contaminants.

High production volume chemicals in the most consumed seafood species in Tarragona area (Spain): Occurrence, exposure, and risk assessment.

Seafood consumption has become a potential exposure route towards high production volume chemicals (HPVs) due to the pathway of these compounds reaching the aquatic environment via industrial and domestic discharges. The present study focuses on the determination of phthalate esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), benzothiazoles (BTs), benzotriazoles (BTRs) and benzenesulfonamides (BSAs) in the ten most consumed fish species in Catalonia. A total of 120 commercially available seafood specimens were purchased throughout February 2019-February 2020 in three different stores (supermarket, local market, and local fishmonger) of the city of Tarragona, Spain, to cover the most typical places where seafood can be obtained. ΣOPEs, ΣBTs, ΣBSAs and ΣPAEs concentrations ranged between 5.99 and 139.45ng g-1 w.w., 8.41-54.08ng g-1 w.w., 8.38-304.47ngg-1 w.w and 2.86-323.80ng g-1 w.w., respectively. BTRs were not detected in any of the samples. PAEs and BSAs had similar contributions which combined represented nearly the 70% of detected compounds and sardine resulted as the species with the higher HPVs mean concentration. No considerable threat was posed due to the individual intake of these compounds via seafood consumption.

Comparative pharmacokinetic studies of 14C-octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (14C-D4) in Fischer 344 and Sprague Dawley CD rats after single and repeated inhalation exposure

Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is a high production volume chemical that has been subject to thorough toxicological investigations. Animal studies with the substance were conducted with either Fischer 344 or Sprague Dawley CD rats. While the pharmacokinetic fate of D4 in Fischer rats is well understood, little information exists on Sprague Dawley CD rats, where reproductive effects have been demonstrated. The objective of this study was to explore the pharmacokinetic behavior in both rats, and to identify potential strain-specific differences. Fischer and Sprague Dawley CD rats were exposed for six hours to 700 ppm of 14C-D4 vapor either with or without preceding 14-day exposure to non-radiolabeled D4. Time-course data in blood, tissues and excreta were obtained through 168 h post-exposure and analyzed for both total radioactivity and parent D4. The data confirm that repeated exposure results in increased metabolism in both rat strains, confirming the findings of earlier studies of auto-induction of CYP2B1/2 by D4. The results also indicate that D4 is subject to strain-specific pharmacokinetic behavior, and that Fischer rats appear to metabolize D4 to a greater extent than Sprague Dawley CD rats.

Screening of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Surface Water and Wastewater Effluents, Assisted by the Persistency-Mobility-Toxicity Criteria.

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are compounds of diverse origins that have not been deeply studied in the past which are now accruing growing environmental interest. The NOR-Water project aimed to identify the main CECs and their sources in the water environment of Northern Portugal–Galicia (located in northwest Spain) transnational region. To achieve these goals, a suspect screening analytical methodology based on the use of liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) was applied to 29 sampling sites in two campaigns. These sampling sites included river and sea water, as well as treated wastewater. The screening was driven by a library of over 3500 compounds, which included 604 compounds prioritized from different relevant lists on the basis of the persistency, mobility, and toxicity criteria. Thus, a total of 343 chemicals could be tentatively identified in the analyzed samples. This list of 343 identified chemicals was submitted to the classification workflow used for prioritization and resulted in 153 chemicals tentatively classified as persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and 23 as very persistent and very mobile (vMvP), pinpointing the relevance of these types of chemicals in the aqueous environment. Pharmaceuticals, such as the antidepressant venlafaxine or the antipsychotic sulpiride, and industrial chemicals, especially high production volume chemicals (HPVC) such as ε-caprolactam, were the groups of compounds that were detected at the highest frequencies.

Multiresidue analytical method for high production volume chemicals in dust samples, occurrence and human exposure assessment

A multiresidue analytical method based on pressurised liquid extraction and gas-chromatography mass spectrometry was developed to determine 22 compounds belonging to different chemical families in indoor dust.: Seven organophosphate esters, six phthalate esters, three benzotriazoles, five benzothiazoles and four benzenesulfonamides were included in the present study, all of them belonging to the category of high production volume chemicals (HPVCs). Apparent recoveries ranged between 45% and 123% and method quantification limits ranged from 0.03 μg/g to 3.8 μg/g. The occurrence of the selected HPVCs was evaluated in indoor dust from different locations in the Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) region. Two benzenesulfonamides, ortho-toluenesulfonamide and para-toluenesulfonamide, were detected in dust samples for the first time. Phthalate esters and organophosphate esters were the most abundant compounds found, and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was determined at the highest concentrations. With the data obtained, human exposure was assessed by calculating the estimated daily intakes (EDI) via ingestion and dermal contact. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk assessments found no risks in any of the scenarios tested, which included two age classes (children and adults) and two possible exposure scenarios (median and worst-case scenario), except for the evaluation of carcinogen risk due to ingestion of DEHP in the worst-case scenario.

Occurrence, congener patterns, and potential ecological risk of chlorinated paraffins in sediments of Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent East China Sea.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are high production volume chemicals with immense scientific research interest due to their wide distribution, persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation potential. In this study, 87 surface sediments were collected from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and the adjacent East China Sea (ECS). We investigated the concentrations, spatial distribution, and composition profiles of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid mass spectrometry. The sedimentary concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs ranged from 2.85 to 94.7 ng·g-1 (median 13.7 ng·g-1) and 3.33 to 77.8 ng·g-1 (median 13.3 ng·g-1), respectively. Higher CP concentrations were found in YRE sediments. The values decreased away from the location, implying a direct influence of the Yangtze River. The SCCP concentrations were higher than those of MCCPs in most sediment samples. Overall, the predominant homologs were C13Cl5-7 and C14Cl6-8 for MCCPs and SCCPs, respectively. Overall, the sediment-dwelling organisms in the region are susceptible to low ecological risks.

Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and toluene diisocyanate: Many similarities and few differences.

Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) are high production volume chemicals used for the manufacture of polyurethanes. For both substances, the most relevant adverse health effects after overexposure in the workplace are isocyanate-induced asthma, lung function decrement and, to a much lesser extent, skin effects. Over the last two decades many articles have addressed the reactivity of MDI and TDI in biological media and the associated biochemistry, which increased the understanding of their biochemical and physiological behavior. In this review, these new insights with respect to similarities and differences concerning the adsorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of these two diisocyanates and the implications on their toxicities are summarized. Both TDI and MDI show very similar behavior in reactivity to biological macromolecules, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. Evidence suggests that the isocyanate (NCO) group is scavenged at the portal-of-entry and is not systemically available in unbound reactive form. This explains the lack of other than portal-of-entry toxicity observed in repeated-dose inhalation tests.

Characteristics of Bisphenol Cardiotoxicity: Impaired Excitability, Contractility, and Relaxation.

Bisphenol a (BPA) is a high production volume chemical that is frequently used to manufacture epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics. BPA-containing products are now pervasive, and as a result, biomonitoring studies report widespread exposure in > 90% of adults, adolescents, and children. Both epidemiological and experimental studies have reported associations between BPA exposure and adverse cardiovascular health outcomes. With increasing concerns regarding BPA exposure, a few structurally similar bisphenol chemicals have been introduced as replacements, including bisphenol s (BPS) and bisphenol f (BPF). In accordance with the recently established "Key characteristics of cardiovascular toxicants", we reviewed the literature to highlight the immediate effects of bisphenol chemicals on (1) cardiac excitability, and (2) contractility and relaxation. BPA inhibits key cardiac ion channels, impairs cardiac excitability, and acts as a more potent inhibitor as compared to BPF and BPS. Through the inhibition of calcium current, some studies report that bisphenol chemicals can act as negative inotropic agents. Yet, others suggest that low dose exposures may increase contractility and precipitate triggered arrhythmias via the phosphorylation of key calcium handling proteins. Accordingly, we propose additional considerations for future work to comprehensively address the cardiac safety profile of BPA, as compared to replacement chemicals.

Occurrence and sorption behaviour of bisphenols and benzophenone UV-filters in e-waste plastic and vehicle fluff

Bisphenols and benzophenone UV-filters are hazardous, high production volume chemicals. There is concern that these contaminants could leach into the environment or be recycled into new products during waste management. To investigate this, nine bisphenols and five benzophenones were quantified in Norwegian e-waste and car fluff. To understand their leachability, equilibrium passive sampling methodology, using polyoxymethylene (POM), was calibrated for these substances, many of which for the first time. This method can differentiate freely dissolved substances in the aqueous phase from those sorbed to suspended colloids and microplastics in the leachate water. Equilibrium POM partitioning was reached within 14 days of shaking; all bisphenols and benzophenone UV-filters exhibited linear isotherms (R2 ranged from 0.83 to 1.0), when deriving POM-water partition coefficients (KPOM). Bisphenol A and bisphenol F displayed the highest concentrations, with maximum levels of 246,000 and 42,400 ng g−1, respectively. Logarithms of waste-water partition coefficients (log Kwaste) ranged from 1.7 (benzophenone 2) to 4.5 (bisphenol P). The established KPOM values agreed with measured Kwaste values (within a factor of ~3), unlike octanol-water partition coefficients. This indicated that POM is a better surrogate for waste plastic partitioning than octanol. Results are discussed in the context of assessing risks from waste management in a circular economy.

Technology Readiness Level Assessment of Formalin Production Pathways

Formalin is among the highest production volume chemicals and can be obtained by several production pathways, though there are several potential production pathways in earlier development stages. To evaluate the maturity level of formalin production technologies, assessment is performed according to Technology Readiness Levels (TRL). TRL is a method used to describe the maturity of technologies, and assign them a TRL level or a range of levels from 1 to 9, with TRL 9 indicating the most mature technologic systems. Formalin is most synthesized from methanol produced via syngas which is obtained by steam reforming of natural gas. Other production pathways are formalin produced from biogas, through gasification of biomass, coal, black liquor and other, through methanol produced by direct hydrogenation of CO2 or via reverse water gas shift reaction, also known as the CAMERE process. Finally, emerging technologies such as direct conversion of methane, syngas or CO2 to formalin were considered. This work will contribute to a wider understanding of the various technologies used in the formalin production field.
