Nitrogen removal performance in roadside stormwater bioretention cells amended with drinking water treatment residuals.

Bioretention cells, a type of green stormwater infrastructure, have been shown to reduce runoff volumes and remove a variety of pollutants. The ability of bioretention cells to remove nitrogen and phosphorus, however, is variable, and bioretention soil media can act as a net exporter of nutrients. This is concerning as excess loading of nitrogen and phosphorus can lead to eutrophication of surface waters, which green stormwater infrastructure is intended to ameliorate. Drinking water treatment residuals (DWTR), metal (hydr)oxide-rich by-products of the drinking water treatment process, have been studied as an amendment to bioretention soil media due to their high phosphorus sorption capacity. However, very few studies have specifically addressed the effects that DWTRs may have on nitrogen removal performance within bioretention cells. Here, we investigated the effects of DWTR amendment on nitrogen removal in bioretention cells treating stormwater in a roadside setting. We tested the capacity of three different DWTRs to either retain or leach dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the laboratory and also conducted a full-scale field experiment where DWTR-amended bioretention cells and experimental controls were monitored for influent and effluent nitrogen concentrations over two field seasons. We found that DWTRs alone exhibit some capacity to leach nitrate and ammonium, but when integrated into sand- and compost-based bioretention soil media, DWTRs have little to no effect on the removal of nitrogen in bioretention cells. These results suggest that DWTRs can be used in bioretention media for enhanced phosphorus retention without the risk of contributing to nitrogen export in bioretention effluent.

Phosphorus-mineralizing Communities Reflect Nutrient-Rich Characteristics in Japanese Arable Andisols.

Elucidating the soil phosphorus cycle driven by soil microbes is a vital question in soil microbial ecology. The Japanese arable Andisols, occupying half of the Japanese cropland, are known for their high phosphorus sorption capacity. However, limited information is currently available on microbially driven phosphorus mineralization in arable Andisols. We herein report that the phosphorus-mineralizing community in the Japanese arable Andisols showed characteristic distribution and composition patterns, from those in other types of soils. We performed a chemical analysis and microbial community analysis of 43 arable Andisols along the Japanese archipelago. Soil phosphomonoesterase activities measured at pH 11 were approximately 70% of those at pH 6.5, which indicates that alkaline phosphatase contributes to phosphorus cycling, although most soil samples were acidic. Functional gene predictions based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that the alkaline phosphatase gene phoD was more abundant than other alkaline phosphatase genes and, thus, plays major roles. Hence, amplicon sequencing targeting phoD was performed and the results obtained showed that alphaproteobacterial phoD was dominant. This is in contrast to previously reported phoD compositions in other soils and may be attributed to the nutrient conditions in arable Andisols, which favor copiotrophic Alphaproteobacteria. Furthermore, the composition of phoD correlated with soil pH and bioavailable phosphorus concentrations rather than carbon or nitrogen concentrations. These results were partly different from previous findings, varying in the soil types and geographic ranges of sampling sites. Collectively, the present results indicate that the phosphorus-mineralizing community in the Japanese arable Andisols is regulated differently from those in other soil types.

Suitability of Moshi Pumice for Phosphorus Sorption in Constructed Wetlands

The study of Moshi Pumice’s phosphorus sorption behaviours and properties was carried out in laboratory scale where by 1-2 mm, 2-4 mm and 4-8 mm grains were tested using batch experiments. The results show that Moshi Pumice has high phosphorus sorption capacity. The sorption capacity for the Moshi Pumice was 2.5 g P/kg. For 1-2mm and 4-8mm grains; about 50% of phosphorus sorption in Moshi Pumice occurs in the first 18 and 20 hours, respectively. Compared to 4-8mm and 2-4mm grains, temperature didn’t significantly influence phosphorus sorption on 1-2mm grain. Moshi Pumice has high potential for phosphorus removal from wastewaters and it can be recommended to be used as a substrate in constructed wetlands to remove phosphorus. © JASEM

Phosphorus isothermal adsorption characteristics of mulch of bioretention

This study aims to identify mulch of bioretention which has high phosphorus sorption capacity. The phosphorus adsorption characteristics of five types of mulch of bioretention are studied by three isothermal adsorption experiments. Results show that the Langmuir eqution is suitable for describing absorption characteristics of five types of mulch. The positive values of Gibbs free energy for phosphorus indicate that the phosphorus biosorption by five mulches is a non-spontaneous process, and the values of mean sorption free energy of mulch are less than 8 kJ/mol, which proves that the adsorption process can be dominated by physical forces. The vermiculite is the better mulch of bioretention based on high phosphorus removal capacity.

Filter bed systems treating domestic wastewater in the Nordic countries – Performance and reuse of filter media

Nine filter beds have been constructed in the Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Filter beds consist of a septic tank followed by an aerobic pre-treatment biofilter and a subsequent saturated flow grass-covered filter. Thus, filter beds are similar to subsurface flow constructed wetlands with pre-treatment biofilters, but do not have wetland plants with roots submerged into the saturated filter. All saturated filters contain Filtralite ®P, a light-weight expanded clay aggregate possessing high phosphorus sorption capacity. The filter bed systems showed stable and consistent performance during the testing period of 3 years. Removal of organic matter measured as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) was >80%, total phosphorus (TP) >94% and total nitrogen (TN) ranged from 32 to 66%. Effluent concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria met the European bathing water quality criteria in all systems. One system was investigated for virus removal and somatic viruses were not detected in the effluent. The investigations revealed that the majority of the BOD and nitrogen removal occurred in the pre-treatment filters and the phosphorus and bacteria removal was more prominent in the saturated filters. The saturated filters could be built substantially smaller than the current design guidelines without sacrificing treatment performance. The used filter material met the Norwegian regulations for reuse in agriculture with respect to heavy metals, bacteria and parasites. When saturated with phosphorus, the light-weight aggregate, Filtralite ®P used in the saturated bed is a suitable phosphorus fertilizer and additionally has a liming effect.

Phosphorus Removal by Expanded Clay—Six Years of Pilot‐Scale Constructed Wetlands Experience

Constructed wetlands, which facilitate phosphorus removal via precipitation, adsorption, and biological assimilation, offer a promising appropriate technology for advanced treatment in wastewater treatment plants. Because adsorption and precipitation are pointed out as the major phosphorus-removal mechanisms, the selection of a medium with high phosphorus-sorption capacity is important to obtain a sustained phosphorus removal. The objective of this study was to evaluate two kinds of lightweight expanded clay aggregates (LWAs)--Filtralite NR and Filtralite MR (Maxit Group, Avelar, Portugal)--as substrates in constructed wetlands to improve phosphorus-removal performance. Laboratory experiments were performed to test the potential of the LWAs to remove phosphorus from a phosphate solution. The experimental data were well-fitted by both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Pilot-scale investigations were carried out to evaluate the phosphorus removal under field conditions. Four subsurface constructed wetlands were operated since June 2002; two of them were planted with Phragmites australis, and the other two were unplanted. The beds were filled with the two kinds of LWAs. Total phosphorous and pH were monitored since 2003, at a mean hydraulic load of 50 +/- 4 L/(m2 x d), during 6 years. The inflow phosphorus concentration was in the range 4 to 13 mg/L. Under the conditions used, beds with Filtralite MR had better efficiency, and the bed with Filtralite MR planted with Phragmites australis provided a phosphorus effluent mean concentration of 0.7 +/- 0.2 mg/L, during the trial period. This study presents the first long-term pilot-scale data for constructed wetlands using LWAs.

Time dependency and irreversibility of water desorption by drinking-water treatment residuals: Implications for sorption mechanisms

Drinking-water treatment residuals (WTRs) are being evaluated as cost-effective sorption media for use in environmental remediation. Data from previous work have suggested that intraparticle phosphorus (P) diffusion into micropores is the rate-limiting mechanism of P sorption by WTRs. We used isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TG) to study water desorption/resorption dynamics as they relate to steric diffusion rate limitations for prospective sorbates. Results showed that air-dried WTR particles contain significant amounts of water. Only about 40% of water desorbed isothermally (70 °C) for 10 h was readsorbed when particles were reexposed to ambient temperature and moisture conditions. This hysteresis related closely with time dependency of water loss, suggesting steric diffusional hindrance of water re-adsorption by meso- and micropores. The irreversibly desorbed water may be the component requiring increased kinetic energy to overcome diffusional resistance. Another possible factor in irreversibility could be pore shrinkage. Samples incubated for 12 months at 70 °C prior to TG analysis showed no hysteresis at 70 °C. Isothermal water losses with time fit well ( r 2 = 0.95 ) the diffusion model of Kabai. These results are consistent with an aqueous pore network that would account for high phosphorus sorption capacity and hysteresis that has been recently documented for WTRs.

Alternative Filter Media for Phosphorous Removal in a Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetland

During the study period from 1997 to 2002 the purification efficiency of phosphorus in the horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetland (CW) in Kodijärve, has been quite high (63–95%). However, slowly increasing trend in outlet P concentrations and decreasing annual P removal rate are obviously the indicators that show possible saturation processes in filter media. To search for potential filter media with high phosphorus sorption capacity, sorption characteristics and particle size distribution of several local sands, gravels, glauconite-sandstone, LWA, and calcareous waste products from oil-shale industry were investigated. The average P sorption capacity for best materials (crashed ash block, oil, shale fly ash and the sediment from oil shale ash plateau) was higher than 96% and estimated design capacity was around 4–5 g P kg−1. According to results, sediment from oil shale ash plateau was considered as perspective filter media for P retention. In Summer 2002 experimental sedimentation filter, filled with the sediment from oil shale ash plateau, was installed in the outlet from the Kodijärve HSSF CW. According to preliminary results the average P removal in the sedimentation filter was 52%.

Soil Variables for Predicting Potential Phosphorus Release in Swedish Noncalcareous Soils

The accumulation of P in agricultural soils due to fertilization has increased the risk of P losses from agricultural fields to surface waters. In risk assessment systems for P losses, both P release from soil to solution and transport mechanisms need to be considered. In this study, the overall objective was to identify soil variables for prediction of potential P release from soil to solution. Soils from nine sites of the Swedish long-term fertility experiment were used, each with four soil P levels. Phosphorus extractable with CaCl2 was used as an estimate of potential P release from soil to solution. Ammonium lactate–extractable phosphorus (P-AL) or NaHCO3–extractable phosphorus (Olsen P) could not be used alone for prediction of potential P release since soils with high phosphorus sorption capacity (PSC) released less P than soils with low PSC at the same soil test phosphorus (STP) level. Degree of phosphorus saturation (DPS) was calculated as Olsen P or P-AL as a percentage of PSC derived from P sorption isotherms or from Fe and Al extractable in ammonium oxalate. The CaCl2–extractable total phosphorus (CaCl2–TP) was exponentially related to these DPS values (r2 ≥ 0.79). The CaCl2–TP was also linearly related to ratios between Olsen P or P-AL and a single-point phosphorus sorption index (PSI; r2 ≥ 0.86). These ratios, which are easily determined and gave good correlations with CaCl2–TP, seemed to be the most useful estimates of potential P release for risk assessment systems.

Shell sand: A new filter medium for constructed wetlands and wastewater treatment

Shell sand is a natural carbonatic material mainly produced by shells, snails and coral alga (Lithotaminion sp.). At some shallow coastal sites shell sand deposits are 5–10 m deep. One million tons of shell sand are harvested annually from Norway's coastline, mainly used as a liming product. Preliminary investigations indicate that shell sand has chemical and physical properties suitable for filter material in constructed wetlands and wastewater filters. Investigation of filtration properties show that shell sand has a high phosphorus sorption capacity, a variable hydraulic conductivity (60–2000 m/day), a high porosity (30–50%) and a relatively low bulk density (0.7 to 1 g/cm3). Column experiments with wastewater showed that shell sand removed phosphorus and organic matter (TOC) efficiently. Complete nitrification was achieved at high hydraulic loading (10 cm/day).
