Optimal Design and Analysis of High-Frequency Isolation Transformer for Switched-Mode Power Converters

High-frequency (HF) transformers have gained great interest in recent years due to the advent of powerful soft magnetic materials with low core loss in semiconductor power switches. Also, the optimal design of the HF transformer is a significant issue for high-performance energy conversion systems. In this paper, a 40W 50/12.5/25 V universal input and two output discontinuous-conduction mode (DCM) flyback transformer is designed by using mathematical calculations and analyzed via 3D ANSYS/Maxwell simulation including electromagnetic and loss analysis. It is shown that the simulation results accounting for hysteresis losses, eddy current losses, copper losses, and magnetic flux density determine the accuracy of the mathematical model calculation. Analyzes are performed at 100 kHz frequency levels. Results obtained will include core magnetic flux density, core/copper losses, leakage/magnetizing inductances, windings parasitic capacitances, input/output voltage, current values, and all design parameters. Finally, the proposed HF transformer's overall efficiency is calculated and presented. Significantly, the HF transformer achieves 97.8% efficiency thanks to the transformer's core and coil selection, B-H and B-P characteristics, one-to-one dimension design, and mesh operation. Attaining promising efficiency through a Quasi-Solid-State symmetrical supercapacitor and Dye-Sensitized solar cell counter electrode utilizing bifunctional Nitrogen-Doped microporous activated carbon

This study addresses the imperative need for high-performance and sustainable energy storage and conversion technologies by leveraging the unique properties of nitrogen-doped porous carbon (N@WnAC) derived from the waste walnut shells (WnS). In the realm of supercapacitors, the N@WnAC demonstrates remarkable performance in a three-electrode system, showcasing a high specific capacitance value of 276.7 Fg−1 at 1 Ag−1, outstanding stability (96.6 %, 5000 charge–discharge cycles) and favourable rate capability (68.8 % at 10 Ag−1). Moreover, a quasi-solid-state symmetrical supercapacitor (N@WnAC//N@WnAC) is fabricated with PVA/H2SO4 gel electrolyte, underscores outstanding performance by delivering high capacitance (126.2 Fg−1 at 0.5 Ag−1), promising rate capability (71.8 % at 5 Ag−1), favourable long-term stability (93.3 %, 5000 charge–discharge cycles), and faster charge–discharge kinetics compared to conventional counterparts. At the same time, N@WnAC//N@WnAC delivers a high energy density (42.27 Whkg−1 at 0.5 Ag−1) that was retained up to 23.96 Whkg−1 even at 5 Ag−1. Simultaneously, the study explores the potential of N@WnAC as a counter-electrode (CE) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The obtained results underscore that unique nitrogen doping enhances the electrocatalytic activity, leading to improved electron transfer kinetics and overall cell performance. Moreover, the N@WnAC CE-based DSSC delivers a promising overall solar-to-electrical conversion efficiency of 5.84 %.

Bioinspired Homonuclear Diatomic Iron Active Site Regulation for Efficient Antifouling Osmotic Energy Conversion.

Membrane-based reverse electrodialysis is globally recognized as a promising technology for harnessing osmotic energy. However, its practical application is greatly restricted by the poor anti-fouling ability of existing membrane materials. Inspired by the structural and functional models of natural cytochrome c oxidases (CcO), the first use of atomically precise homonuclear diatomic iron composites as high-performance osmotic energy conversion membranes with excellent anti-fouling ability is demonstrated. Through rational tuning of the atomic configuration of the diatomic iron sites, the oxidase-like activity can be precisely tailored, leading to the augmentation of ion throughput and anti-fouling capacity. Composite membranes featuring direct Fe-Fe motif configurations embedded within cellulose nanofibers (CNF/Fe-DACs-P) surpass state-of-the-art CNF-based membranes with power densities of ca. 6.7Wm-2 and a 44.5-fold enhancement in antimicrobial performance. Combined, experimental characterization and density functional theory simulations reveal that homonuclear diatomic iron sites with metal-metal interactions can achieve ideally balanced adsorption and desorption of intermediates, thus realizing superior oxidase-like activity, enhanced ionic flux, and excellent antibacterial activity.

Ultra-wideband solar absorber via vertically structured GDPT metamaterials

We explore a new solar absorber via vertically structured metamaterials integrating 2D graphene, dielectric layers of silica (SiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and phase-transition vanadium dioxide (VO2) graphene, dielectric, phase transition (GDPT), achieving broadband absorption and polarization independence. Applying the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, the optical performance of the absorber is analyzed under the normal incidence of a plane wave spanning wavelengths from 250 to 4000 nm. Particularly, our investigation reveals a broad bandwidth exceeding 90 % absorption, spanning 3559 nm from 250 to 3809 nm, with an impressive average absorption efficiency of over 95.9 %. Significantly, the absorber demonstrates polarization independence and insensitivity to large angles of incidence, enhancing its practical capability. We illuminate the important role of Fabry-Perot resonance in absorption by precisely tuning layer thicknesses to induce interference effects. The integration of graphene, dielectric layers, and VO2, augmented by Fabry-Perot resonance, provides a vital foundation for high-performance solar energy conversion technology. This technology has important applications in efficient and broadband solar absorbers, and these absorbers can maintain high performance under different conditions. Our goal is to solve current technological challenges and contribute to the development of next-generation solar energy conversion for various photon technologies, such as energy harvesting, electromagnetic wave capture, and photovoltaic devices.

Improved performance of thermophotovoltaic energy conversion with Tamm plasmon emitters enabled by back gapped reflectors

A thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system that can convert thermal radiation from terrestrial heat sources into electricity, plays an important role in energy utilization, waste heat recovery and so on. In order to enhance the conversion efficiency of a TPV system having a narrow-band thermal emitter, we propose to add a back gapped reflector (BGR) to recover more out-of band (OOB) photons. We first design a Tamm plasmon thermal emitter to yield a narrow-band emission peak matching well with the bandgap of the InGaAs cell. Then, we add a BGR on the PV cell to regulate the absorption spectrum of the cell. Results show that, compared to the back surface reflector (BSR), the TPV system with the Au BGR cell has a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE), because more OOB photons are reflected back to the emitter by the Au BGR cell, so that the absorbed power by the cell decreases while the output power is improved. Due to the contribution of recycled OOB photons, at 1500 K, a 1.7 % OOB reflectance gain of the BGR (h = 0.2 μm, t = 1.2 μm) can actually increase the PCE by about 4 %. In addition, a thin PV cell and an appropriately thick air gap layer of 0.4–0.6 μm are suggested to obtain a high η × Pout. The PCE of the TPV system based on the Tamm plasmon emitter is higher and becomes saturated at a lower temperature than the broad-band SiC emitter. This work may facilitate high-performance TPV energy conversion.

Highly efficient and durable water electrolysis via ligand modulated interfacial assembly

Herein, we report a robust ligand-modulated interfacial assembly strategy for controllable metal doping to yield high-efficiency and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts of FeCoS-embedded hollow N-doped carbon (denoted H-FeCoS/NC) for electrocatalytic overall water splitting (EOWS). Specifically, the hollow Co-based layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) is employed to render interfacial assembly of CoFe-PBA with tunable composition, morphology, and interface on Co-LDH, regulated by inorganic ligand. Subsequent sulfidation produces H-FeCoS/NC, manifesting outstanding OER/HER activities owing to favourable ligand-modulated Fe-doping, large specific surface area, well-dispersed FeCoS nanoparticles. DFT calculation reveals that ligand-modulated Fe-doping effectively promotes charge transfer, optimizes the intermediates/electrocatalyst interaction, and reduces OER/HER energy barriers, thus boosting the EOWS performance. The H-FeCoS/NC-assembled electrolyzer delivers a low cell voltage of 1.52 V and stably operates for 1000 h in alkaline medium, surpassing most non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts. This work highlights a facile interfacial assembly route to engineer highly active electrocatalysts for high-performance and durable energy conversion and storage.

The influence of divalent ions on the osmotic energy conversion performance of 2D cation exchange membrane in reverse electrodialysis process

As reverse electrodialysis (RED) technology evolves, achieving high-performance osmotic energy conversion (OEC) necessitates porous membranes with exceptional ion selectivity and permeability. Two-dimensional membranes crafted from graphene oxide (GO) or MXene stand out for their immensely high surface charges, which facilitate superb ion selectivity during transport. Their unique layered stacking structure further yields ultra-small nanochannel radii, bolstering ion selectivity while maintaining high permeability. This makes them prime candidates for osmotic energy conversion. However, the presence of divalent ions in natural seawater readily alters the surface charge density and interlayer spacing of these 2D membranes, significantly impacting their OEC performance, resulting in a power density reduction of about 6 % -10 %. Prior research focused on the ionic properties of divalent ions but overlooked their impact on the nanochannel structure, including changes in interlayer spacing and surface charge density. This study thus delves into the OEC performance variations of GO and MXene 2D layered membranes under varying divalent ion concentrations and salt ratios. Starting from the ion properties of divalent ions and their impact on the nanochannel structure, combined with simulation research, explain their mechanism of action. This research offers theoretical foundations for the future design and application of 2D layered membranes, providing novel solutions and insights to tackle critical challenges like enhancing power density and adapting to real seawater conditions.

Optical investigation on lubricant combustion characteristics under the ammonia-methane premixed environment

The combustion process is an indispensable energy conversion step in modern industry and energy production. Especially in high-performance engines and energy conversion systems, understanding and controlling the combustion process is critical to improving efficiency and reducing environmental pollution. As a key component of mechanical systems, the combustion characteristics of lubricants at high temperatures and pressures have a direct impact on system performance and emissions. This study investigated the combustion characteristics of lubricant films in an ammonia-methane premixed environment using Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) and Planar Laser-Induced Incandescence (PLII). It focused on the effects of varying ammonia concentrations on the emission of soot and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the constant volume combustion vessel. Experiments varied the ammonia-to-methane molar ratios, initial oil film thickness, and base oil type to study their influence on the lubricant combustion characteristics. Results indicated that ammonia significantly reduced soot formation by altering the dynamics of NH* and OH* and impacting PAH distribution. For the lubricating oil soot formation factors, the increase of the initial mean oil film thickness was more obvious for the promotion of soot formation, the increase of the unsaturated hydrocarbon content in the oil film also promoted the generation of carbon soot to a certain extent, and the initial flame energy ratio had the least influence on the promotion of soot formation. Overall, the study contributed to the understanding of the formation mechanism of soot caused by lubricating oil in zero-carbon and low-carbon blended atmospheres and provided a new insight into the interaction between nitrogen-containing zero-carbon fuels and large-carbon-number hydrocarbons, which is of great significance for controlling soot emissions from engines under zero-carbon fuel blending.

Enhancing Ionic Selectivity and Osmotic Energy by Using an Ultrathin Zr-MOF-Based Heterogeneous Membrane with Trilayered Continuous Porous Structure.

Designing a nanofluidic membrane with high selectivity and fast ion transport property is the key towards high-performance osmotic energy conversion. However, most of reported membranes can produce power density less than commercial benchmark (5 W/m2), due to the imbalance between ion selectivity and permeability. Here, we report a novel nanoarchitectured design of a heterogeneous membrane with an ultrathin and dense zirconium-based UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic framework (MOF) layer and a highly aligned and interconnected branched alumina nanochannel membrane. The design leads to a continuous trilayered pore structure of large geometry gradient in the sequence from angstrom-scale to nano-scale to sub-microscale, which enables the enhanced directional ion transport, and the angstrom-sized (~6.6-7 Å) UiO-66-NH2 windows render the membrane with high ion selectivity. Consequently, the novel heterogeneous membrane can achieve a high-performance power of ~8 W/m2 by mixing synthetic seawater and river water. The power density can be largely upgraded to an ultrahigh ~17.1 W/m2 along with ~48.5 % conversion efficiency at a 50-fold KCl gradient. This work not only presents a new membrane design approach but also showcases the great potential of employing the zirconium-based MOF channels as ion-channel-mimetic membranes for highly efficient blue energy harvesting.

Wood derived carbon embedded with shell-core CoP@CoFe for efficient oxygen evolution

Development of hybrid materials with specific architecture, interface, and multicomponent interactions demonstrates effective paradigm for pursuing high-performance energy conversion materials. Herein, using renewable and inexpensive wood-derived carbon as host, the shell-core CoP@CoFe particles are embedded on walls of carbonized wood channels (termed as CoP@CoFe/CW) to fabricate composite catalyst for electrocatalysis oxygen evolution reaction (OER). With benefits of the well distribution of CoP@CoFe particles, high conductivity of CW with channels, and good integration between them, highly exposed catalysis surface as well as rapid charge/mass transfer are achieved. The interface effect of shell-core hybrid activates the intrinsic OER efficiency of CoP@CoFe. Thus, the designed CoP@CoFe/CW yields excellent OER performance with ultralow overpotential of 120 mV (10 mA cm−2). This strategy of catalyst design based on eco-friendliness and renewable CW host may offer promising reference to explore composite materials with high conductivity and fast mass transfer for water electrolysis and other energy storage/conversion systems.

Unlocking the critical roles of N, P Co-Doping in MXene for Lithium‐Oxygen Batteries: Elevated d‐Band center and expanded interlayer spacing

The design and fabrication of bifunctional catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity and stability are critical for developing highly reversible Li–O2 batteries (LOBs). Herein, the N, P co-doped MXene (NP-MXene) is prepared by one-step annealing method and evaluated as bifunctional catalyst for LOBs. The results suggest that the P doping plays a crucial role in increasing interlayer distance of MXene, thereby effectively providing more active sites, fast mass transfer, and ample space for the deposition/decomposition of Li2O2. Moreover, the N doping can significantly elevate the d-band center of Ti, thereby remarkably improving the adsorption of reaction intermediates and accelerating the deposition/decomposition of Li2O2 films. Consequently, the MXene-based LOBs deliver an ultrahigh specific capacity of 13,995 mAh/g at 500 mA g−1, a discharge/charge voltage gap of 0.89 V, and a cycle life up to 523 cycles with a limited capacity of 1000 mAh/g at 500 mA g−1. Impressively, the as-fabricated flexible LOBs with NP-MXene cathode display excellent cycling stability and ability to continuously power LEDs even after bending. Our findings pave the road of heteroatom doped MXenes as next-generation electrodes for high-performance energy storage and conversion systems.

Modulation of morphology and electronic structure of cobalt thiophenedicarboxylic coordination polymer via ligand exchange for high-performance oxygen evolution reaction and supercapacitor

Rationally designing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as an ideal dual-function material for water electrolysis and supercapacitors is of great significance for energy storage and conversion. Herein, we successfully synthesized the nanoneedle-like structure CoNi-MOF by partially replacing 2, 5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TDA) with 1, 1′-Ferrocenedicarboxylate (Fc). The exchange of Fc ligand can modulate the morphology and electronic structure of CoNi-TDA, thus exposing the abundant active sites and improving the electrical conductivity. The as-prepared CoNi-TDA/0.2Fc exhibited a low overpotential of 236 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and a low Tafel slope of 40.44 mV dec−1. Additionally, CoNi-TDA/0.2Fc demonstrated a notable specific capacitance of 1409 F g−1 at 1 A/g and excellent stability, maintaining a capacitance retention of 96.54 % after 20,000 cycles. The study proposes a new strategy to modulate the morphology and electronic structure of MOFs via the ligand exchange for high-performance energy storage and conversion device.

Highly porous layered carbon nanocomposites from the self-assembly of a poly(amic acid) for efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalysis

Porous layered carbon nanomaterials play important role in the efficient loading of electroactive substances for high performance energy conversion techniques. Herein, an intramolecular cyclization induced self-assembly (ICISA) strategy is proposed to prepare three-dimensional highly porous layered carbon nanostructures (LCs) for efficient loading of various transition metal nanoparticles for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis. The amphiphilic alternating copolymer poly(amic acid) (PAA) is synthesized by the stepwise polymerization of hydrazine hydrate and pyromellitic dianhydride. Upon heating above 160 °C, the intramolecular cyclization reaction occurs, leading to the formation of rigid, crystalline and non-soluble polyimide segments in the backbone, which induces the self-assembly of the polymer to form dumbbell-shaped assemblies with a high solid content of 15%. After pyrolysis in a nitrogen atmosphere, LCs are obtained. Cobalt (Co), iron (Fe) and FeCo nanoparticles can be efficiently loaded, noted as Co@LCs, Fe@LCs and FeCo@LCs, respectively. The ORR catalytic performance of the catalysts is evaluated to give half wave potentials of 0.791, 0.787 and 0.812 V, and limit current densities of 4.92, 4.73 and 4.71 mA cm−2 for Co@LCs, Fe@LCs and FeCo@LCs, respectively. Overall, we propose an ICISA strategy to facilely prepare three-dimensional carbon nanomaterials with highly porous layered structure for efficient ORR catalysis.

Design and Multi-Objective Optimization for Improving Torque Performance of a Permanent Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor

Permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors (PMA-SynRMs) are widely used in various industries as a relatively inexpensive and high-performance energy conversion device. The model proposed in this article relies on a magnetic pole-biased permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor with a magnetic focusing effect. Two types of models with Halbach array and magnetic focusing effect have been proposed, which increase excitation and make the internal magnetic circuit of the rotor more saturated, thereby achieving higher electromagnetic torque. Through finite element simulation analysis and verification, the motor characteristics of the basic and proposed permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor were calculated, including the air gap flux density and back electromotive force (EMF) in no-load analysis, as well as the average torque, torque ripple, and efficiency in load analysis. In addition, multi-objective optimization was also conducted on the rotor topology structure of proposed model two, using the uniform Latin hypercube sampling method to uniformly sample the data samples and the Pearson correlation coefficients to perform a sensitivity analysis on the data. The pilOPT multi-objective autonomous optimization algorithm was used to perform multi-objective autonomous optimization on parameters with high correlation, and the best-found solution based on the Pareto front was selected. Compared with proposed model two, the average torque of the optimized model increased by 18.14%, the efficiency increased by 1.05% and the torque ripple decreased by 5.22%. Finally, the anti-demagnetization performance of the optimized model’s permanent magnet was analyzed.

Investigating the influence of oxygen-functionalized graphene nanosheets as an efficient multifunctional material for supercapacitor and electrocatalytic water splitting applications

Graphene oxide (GO) has received great research attention to develop its efficiency in electrochemical applications, particularly supercapacitor (SC) and water splitting systems. However, the presence of various oxygen moieties in GO drastically reduces the utilization of the material for commercial usages. In this work, we demonstrate the use of different sources to reduce graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The partially reduced GO not only improves the electronic conductivity but also boosts the interaction between the sp2- and sp3-hybridized carbon atoms. Benefiting from the partial reduction process, RGO is applied for the SC test in the three-electrode system and reveals a specific capacitance of 151.1 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 with a long cycle life. Furthermore, the asymmetric solid-state device can also be constructed from an M-GO cathode with an activated carbon anode, which displays a specific capacitance of 54.4 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, with a maximum energy density of 19.3 W h kg−1. Besides, the electrochemical water splitting performance of the partially reduced GO in KOH solution was also explored, confirming the effectiveness of the reduction process. This work highlights the successful preparation of RGO nanosheets, which may open a new route to constructing high-performance energy storage and conversion devices.

Polyoxometalate-based plasmonic electron sponge membrane for nanofluidic osmotic energy conversion.

Nanofluidic membranes have demonstrated great potential in harvesting osmotic energy. However, the output power densities are usually hampered by insufficient membrane permselectivity. Herein, we design a polyoxometalates (POMs)-based nanofluidic plasmonic electron sponge membrane (PESM) for highly efficient osmotic energy conversion. Under light irradiation, hot electrons are generated on Au NPs surface and then transferred and stored in POMs electron sponges, while hot holes are consumed by water. The stored hot electrons in POMs increase the charge density and hydrophilicity of PESM, resulting in significantly improved permselectivity for high-performance osmotic energy conversion. In addition, the unique ionic current rectification (ICR) property of the prepared nanofluidic PESM inhibits ion concentration polarization effectively, which could further improve its permselectivity. Under light with 500-fold NaCl gradient, the maximum output power density of the prepared PESM reaches 70.4 W m-2, which is further enhanced even to 102.1 W m-2 by changing the ligand to P5W30. This work highlights the crucial roles of plasmonic electron sponge for tailoring the surface charge, modulating ion transport dynamics, and improving the performance of nanofluidic osmotic energy conversion.

Optimal Modeling of Ni/YSZ Triple Phase Boundary in Solid Oxide Cells Using First-Principles Calculations

Power generation with renewable energy using solid oxide cells (SOCs) has been widely researched. To solve the existing problems of SOCs, such as degradation and efficiency improvement, it is essential to understand reaction mechanisms on the surface/interface such as triple phase boundary (TPB) composed of catalysts, electrolytes, and gas phases. However, a reliable TPB model has not been uniquely defined to discuss the property. This study focused on the TPB model comprising Ni catalysts, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes, and gas phases, and aimed to theoretically identify a reliable TPB model by using density functional theory calculations. The stable structure of YSZ surface models was first identified considering various oxygen vacancy positions, yttrium atom arrangements, yttria concentration, and YSZ surfaces. Thereafter, a reliable Ni/YSZ interface model was discussed by evaluating various Ni structure types, Ni interfaces in contact with the YSZ surface, and interface positions. As a result, we have proposed a more reliable YSZ surface structure than previous reports and reasonable Ni/YSZ interface models considering the computational cost to discuss the properties of TPB. These findings will contribute to the improved design of SOCs as high-performance energy conversion systems for sustainable energy storage.

Hummers' method-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation enables the fabrication of few-layer borophene from bulk boron.

The fabrication of few-layer borophene (BP) from bulk boron (b-B) is of great importance and still a scientific challenge due to the complex structure and crystallinity of b-B. Herein, we propose a novel technique to prepare a few-layer BP on a large scale with a large lateral size in a well-controlled manner. For this, we employed the Hummers' method-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation. In the first step, the chemical exfoliation of the b-B as a precursor was performed by the modified Hummers' method. After chemical exfoliation, mechanical delamination was employed by using an immersion sonicator. Finally, BP sheets were collected with dimensions ranging from several hundred nanometers to a few micrometers and an average thickness of 4.2 nm. We envision that the proposed low-cost, flexible, and large-scale production method will provide unique advantages for the application of few-layer BP in the realization of high-performance electronics, optoelectronics, flexible devices, sensing systems, energy conversion, and storage devices.

Nanostructured Materials for Enhanced Performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Comprehensive Review

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have emerged as promising candidates for efficient and environmentally friendly energy conversion technologies. Their high energy conversion efficiency and fuel flexibility make them particularly attractive for various applications, ranging from stationary power generation to portable electronic devices. Recently, research has focused on utilizing nanostructured materials to enhance the performance of SOFCs. This comprehensive review summarizes the latest advancements in the design, fabrication, and characterization of nanostructured materials integrated in SOFC. The review begins by elucidating the fundamental principles underlying SOFC operation, emphasizing the critical role of electrode materials, electrolytes, and interfacial interactions in overall cell performance, and the importance of nanostructured materials in addressing key challenges. It provides an in-depth analysis of various types of nanostructures, highlighting their roles in improving the electrochemical performance, stability, and durability of SOFCs. Furthermore, this review delves into the fabrication techniques that enable precise control over nanostructure morphology, composition, and architecture. The influence of nanoscale effects on ionic and electronic transport within the electrolyte and electrodes is thoroughly explored, shedding light on the mechanisms behind enhanced performance.
