Highly-integrable analogue reservoir circuits based on a simple cycle architecture

Physical reservoir computing is a promising solution for accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) computations. Various physical systems that exhibit nonlinear and fading-memory properties have been proposed as physical reservoirs. Highly-integrable physical reservoirs, particularly for edge AI computing, has a strong demand. However, realizing a practical physical reservoir with high performance and integrability remains challenging. Herein, we present an analogue circuit reservoir with a simple cycle architecture suitable for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) chip integration. In several benchmarks and demonstrations using synthetic and real-world data, our developed hardware prototype and its simulator exhibit a high prediction performance and sufficient memory capacity for practical applications, showing promise for future applications in highly integrated AI accelerators.

Magneto-transport in the monolayer MoS2 material system for high-performance field-effect transistor applications

Electronic transport in monolayer MoS2 is significantly constrained by several extrinsic factors despite showing good prospects as a transistor channel material. Our paper aims to unveil the underlying mechanisms of the electrical and magneto-transport in monolayer MoS2. In order to quantitatively interpret the magneto-transport behavior of monolayer MoS2 on different substrate materials, identify the underlying bottlenecks, and provide guidelines for subsequent improvements, we present a deep analysis of the magneto-transport properties in the diffusive limit. Our calculations are performed on suspended monolayer MoS2 and MoS2 on different substrate materials taking into account remote impurity and the intrinsic and extrinsic phonon scattering mechanisms. We calculate the crucial transport parameters such as the Hall mobility, the conductivity tensor elements, the Hall factor, and the magnetoresistance over a wide range of temperatures, carrier concentrations, and magnetic fields. The Hall factor being a key quantity for calculating the carrier concentration and drift mobility, we show that for suspended monolayer MoS2 at room temperature, the Hall factor value is around 1.43 for magnetic fields ranging from 0.001 to 1 Tesla, which deviates significantly from the usual value of unity. In contrast, the Hall factor for various substrates approaches the ideal value of unity and remains stable in response to the magnetic field and temperature. We also show that the MoS2 over an Al2O3 substrate is a good choice for the Hall effect detector. Moreover, the magnetoresistance increases with an increase in magnetic field strength for smaller magnetic fields before reaching saturation at higher magnetic fields. The presented theoretical model quantitatively captures the scaling of mobility and various magnetoresistance coefficients with temperature, carrier densities, and magnetic fields.

Low-loss carrier stored trench-gate bipolar transistor with split-gate optimization

In the conventional carrier stored trench-gate bipolar transistor (CSTBT) device, a lower conduction voltage drop (Von) can be achieved with higher carrier stored (CS) layer dosage. However, the trench bottom is weakened leading to easier breakdown under high electrical field. In this work, the trench-gate structure of the conventional CSTBT is optimized and split into three components. The bottom and top left components of the split trench structure are equipotential with the emitter, which effectively eliminated the impact of collector on the trench gate with reduced gate charge (Qgc). In addition, another n-type CS layer is formed adjacent to the emitter to further enhance the hole carrier storage effect near emitter. This improves the trade-off between Von and turn-off time (Toff) without breakdown voltage (BV) degradation. The simulation results show that in comparison with the conventional CSTBT, the proposed device exhibits 64.6% reduction in Qgc under the same Von, while the turn-off time (Toff) and the saturation current are reduced by 14.9% and 43.4%, respectively. The short-circuit capability is also studied with 2.83 times improvement. Our proposed device shown here provides a feasible and attractive approach for advanced high-performance power electronics applications.

In-situ synthesis and binding of silver nanoparticles to dialdehyde and carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils, and active packaging therewith

AbstractThe present work reveals the potential application of dialdehyde and carboxylated nanocellulose for the in-situ reduction of Ag+ and immobilization as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on cellulose surfaces. Tollens’ reagent (Ag(NH3)2OH) at concentrations ranging from 5·10–3 to 10–1 M was incorporated in both dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and dialdehyde-modified TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (DA-TOCNFs). The results showed that DA-TOCNFs facilitated faster reduction of Ag+ and effective immobilization of AgNPs on the nanocellulose surface. The resulting suspensions exhibited stability and demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis when coated on paper surfaces. Importantly, the coated papers did not show significant silver migration to food simulants B (3 vol% acetic acid) and D1 (ethanol/water mixture, 50 vol%), indicating the potential of these suspensions for active food packaging. The advantages of using DA-TOCNFs over DAC were attributed to their higher cationic demand and ζ-potential, resulting in a higher density of binding sites. Moreover, the charged and entangled network of DA-TOCNFs allowed for the individualization of AgNPs, unlike DAC, where some agglomerations were observed. Overall, this study presents an improved single-step process for the synthesis of AgNPs on nanocellulose surfaces, highlighting their potential for safe and high-performance applications in food packaging. Paper sheets coated with nanocellulose/AgNPs suspensions fully inhibited the growth of B. subtilis, at least for one month after coating, and caused damage to their cell membranes. This research provides a one-pot facile route to fabricating hybrid nanocellulose/AgNPs systems, stable in water, and may be used directly as a coating layer for board and paper active packaging with little or even undetectable release of Ag.

Multifunctional activated carbon derived from novel biomass for high-performance energy storage applications: A sustainable alternative to fossil-fuel-derived carbon

Biomass-derived activated carbon materials have been attracted as low-cost and sustainable electrode materials for energy storage applications. In this work, we synthesised activated carbon from black gram whole skin for the first time, and the used source is a cost-effective carbon precursor. Nitrogen and phosphorous doping in activated carbon improved electronic conductivity, surface area and porosity. In supercapacitor application, the nitrogen and phosphorous doped activated carbon sample showed a high specific capacitance of 425 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and cycling stability of about 92.5 % capacitance retention even after 5000 cycles in a three-electrode system. The observed stable specific capacitance in a three-electrode system encouraged us to make a two-electrode symmetric device, showing a specific capacitance of 100 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 with a higher energy density of 20 Wh kg−1. In addition, the lithium storage capability of doped carbon showed good capacity of 750 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 with a reversible capacity of 687 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. The hetero-atom doped activated carbon derived from black gram skin showed outstanding electrochemical performance towards supercapacitor and lithium battery application, indicating a potential alternative to fossil fuel-derived carbon.

Low-Power Approximate Unsigned and Signed Multipliers with Configurable Error Recovery

In the field of Digital Signal Processing and similar applications, Approximate circuits are being explored as a means to enhance performance and energy efficiency by sacrificing a degree of accuracy. Within these circuits, Multipliers play a crucial role and are being investigated for their potential impact on overall system optimization. In this paper, a novel approximate multiplier with a low power consumption and a short critical path is proposed for high-performance DSP applications. This multiplier leverages a newly designed approximate adder that limits its carry propagation to the nearest neighbours for fast partial product accumulation. Different levels of accuracy can be achieved by using either OR gates or the proposed approximate adder in a configurable error recovery. The multipliers using these two error reduction strategies are referred to as Approximate Multiplier 1 (AM1) and Approximate Multiplier 2 (AM2), respectively. Both AM1 and AM2 have a low mean error distance, i.e., most of the errors are not significant in magnitude. Compared with a Unsigned multiplication multiplier, with the signed multiplication. The signed multiplication tends to have lower power consumption is observed. By utilizing an appropriate error recovery, the proposed approximate multipliers achieve similar processing accuracy as traditional exact multipliers, but with significant improvements in power.

Graphene oxide–lithium-ion batteries: inauguration of an era in energy storage technology

Abstract A significant driving force behind the brisk research on rechargeable batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) in high-performance applications, is the development of portable devices and electric vehicles. Carbon-based materials, which have finite specific capacity, make up the anodes of LiBs. Many attempts are being made to produce novel nanostructured composite anode materials for LiBs that display cycle stability that is superior to that of graphite using graphene oxide. Therefore, using significant amounts of waste graphene oxide from used LiBs represents a fantastic opportunity to engage in waste management and circular economy. This review outlines recent studies, developments and the current advancement of graphene oxide-based LiBs, including preparation of graphene oxide and utilization in LiBs, particularly from the perspective of energy storage technology, which has drawn more and more attention to creating high-performance electrode systems.

Unveiling the potential of Na2FePO4F@PEG composite as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries

The economic and environmental advantages of Na2FePO4F fluorophosphate have positioned it as a highly promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). This recognition stems from its demonstrated potential to address key challenges in energy storage systems, making it a subject of extensive research and studies.In this paper, the preparation of Na2FePO4F powder through a simplified, upscaling, and cost-effective approach that involves the direct use of phosphoric acid is described, aiming to evaluate its electrochemical performance. The obtained orthorhombic structure (S.G. Pbcn) is mixed with varying percentages of polyethylene glycol as a carbon source (15% and 20%) to generate large specific surfaces, improve electronic conductivity, and achieve an optimized carbon content for these materials. The 15% and 20% PEG-coated Na2FePO4F are evaluated at a 2 - 4 V voltage range at C/15 in Na-half cells using two electrolyte formulations: 5% FEC 1 M NaClO4:PC and 1 M NaPF6:PC. The NaPF6/FEC electrolyte exhibits better electrochemical characteristics and high cycling stability, especially in the case of the 15% PEG-coated material. These findings are also supported by the data from differential plots and rate capabilities, highlighting the potential of the coated material for applications in high-performance energy storage applications.

Biolayer-Interferometry-Guided Functionalization of Screen-Printed Graphene for Label-Free Electrochemical Virus Detection.

Additive manufacturing holds promise for rapid prototyping and low-cost production of biosensors for diverse pathogens. Among additive manufacturing methods, screen printing is particularly desirable for high-throughput production of sensing platforms. However, this technique needs to be combined with carefully formulated inks, rapid postprocessing, and selective functionalization to meet all requirements for high-performance biosensing applications. Here, we present screen-printed graphene electrodes that are processed with thermal annealing to achieve high surface area and electrical conductivity for sensitive biodetection via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. As a proof-of-concept, this biosensing platform is utilized for electrochemical detection of SARS-CoV-2. To ensure reliable specificity in the presence of multiple variants, biolayer interferometry (BLI) is used as a label-free and dynamic screening method to identify optimal antibodies for concurrent affinity to the Spike S1 proteins of Delta, Omicron, and Wild Type SARS-CoV-2 variants while maintaining low affinity to competing pathogens such as Influenza H1N1. The BLI-identified antibodies are robustly bound to the graphene electrode surface via oxygen moieties that are introduced during the thermal annealing process. The resulting electrochemical immunosensors achieve superior metrics including rapid detection (55 s readout following 15 min of incubation), low limits of detection (approaching 500 ag/mL for the Omicron variant), and high selectivity toward multiple variants. Importantly, the sensors perform well on clinical saliva samples detecting as few as 103 copies/mL of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron, following CDC protocols. The combination of the screen-printed graphene sensing platform and effective antibody selection using BLI can be generalized to a wide range of point-of-care immunosensors.

Migration-aware slot-based memory request scheduler to guarantee QoS in DRAM-PCM hybrid memories

Emerging hybrid memory technologies composed of non-volatile memories (NVM) and DRAMs exhibit significant access speeds and capacity improvement. High application performance is feasible by dynamic migration (or relocation) of pages (data) between the memory types. While NVM is used for its density during memory allocation, moving write-intensive pages from NVM to DRAM helps to improve the execution and response time of applications. Existing techniques propose solutions to dynamically identify the pages that need to be moved immediately or in regular intervals. Such an immediate or interval-based rigid migration regime may hamper the service of the regular memory requests, which in turn affects the memory service rate.To alleviate the impact on service rate and improve the quality-of-service (QoS) of the device, this paper proposes a scheduling method to identify the instant at which to migrate the eligible page. Along with regular memory requests, these eligible migration candidate pages are given reserved time slots by taking into account the current memory request rate. Our proposed methods aim to optimise the migration overheads by avoiding unnecessary migrations and at the same time guaranteeing future accesses to the migrated pages. This results in improved execution time and memory response time for the applications.

Glass–Carbon–Kevlar fiber reinforced hybrid polymer composite (HPC): Part (A) mechanical and thermal characterization for high GSM laminates

The quest for light weight hybrid polymer composites (HPC) has resulted into multiple materials and structural configurations for achieving high performance in automotive and aerospace applications. Incidentally, the past reported work has (in general) involved variable GSM while investigating reinforced fiber layers. The variable GSM may lead to a random response of each layer to the applied forces and thermal degradation, due to which attributing the role of various layers to results/properties is difficult to ascertain. This research employs a uniform/consistent approach with high GSM (400) based HPC with multiple stacking sequences of glass (G), carbon (C), and Kevlar (K) to investigate thermo-mechanical properties. The research first focuses on fabrication of eleven stacking sequences of hybrid combinations, followed by identification of an optimal sequence based on mechanical (tensile strength, flexural strength, charpy impact resistance) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) characterization. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for fracture mechanisms of hybrid composites showing fiber pull out, matrix crack, and delamination. Results show that the tertiary combination having 2 Glass, 5 Carbon and 5 Kevlar layers (G2C5K5) named H9 herein provides a good balance of tensile, flexural, impact resistance and thermal properties; its deviation from the best of each category is within approximately 5, 13.5, 9.9 and 10.9 % (for tensile, flexural, impact, TGA) respectively. The range of properties evaluated in this study is deemed suitable for lightweight aircraft structures.

A comprehensive computational investigation on the physical properties of the chalcogenide ternary Y2ZnX4 (Y = In, Ga; X = S, Se) compounds

In this study, the structural, elastic, vibrational, electronic, optical, thermodynamic, and thermoelectric properties of the chalcogenide ternary Y2ZnX4 (Y = In, Ga; X = S, Se) compounds are comprehensively investigated using the pseudopotential plane-wave (PP-PW) and full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) methods. The analysis of elastic and vibrational properties reveals the dynamic and mechanical stability of these compounds. The calculated energy band gaps, ranging from 1.47 eV (Ga2ZnSe4) to 2.55 eV (In2ZnS4) in the visible spectrum, decrease as X atoms are substituted with S to Se. All examined compounds demonstrate favorable optical absorption (α > 105 cm-1) in the ultraviolet region. Notably, Ga2ZnSe4 exhibits absorption red-shift towards the visible region at hν = 2.76 eV due to its lower energy band gap, making it a promising candidate for solar cells. The three-dimensional representation of Young's modulus indicates significant deviation from sphericity, revealing anisotropic behavior in all compounds. Pugh's ratio, Poisson's ratio, and Cauchy's pressure analysis suggest ductile behavior in all four chalcogenide ternary compounds. Additionally, all compounds, except In2ZnS4, display auxetic properties. Finally, the calculated thermoelectric properties identify Ga2ZnS4 and In2ZnS4 as promising candidates for high-performance thermoelectric applications, with high Seebeck coefficients of 1848 and 1936 μV/K, respectively, and ZT values approaching unit.

Facile synthesis and electrochemical investigation of graphitic carbon nitride/manganese dioxide incorporated polypyrrole nanocomposite for high-performance energy storage applications

Abstract Manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles were modified by graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) and polylpyrrole (Ppy) to enhance their electrochemical performance. The surface influence, crystalline structure, and electrochemical performance of the Ppy/GCN/MnO2 material were characterized and compared with those of pristine MnO2. It is found that surface modification can improve the structural stability of MnO2 without decreasing its available specific capacitance. The electrochemical properties of synthesized Ppy/GCN/MnO2 electrode were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and AC impedance techniques in 5 M KOH electrolyte. Specific capacitances of 486, 815, 921, and 1377 F/g were obtained for MnO2, Ppy/MnO2, GCN/MnO2, and Ppy/GCN/MnO2, respectively, at 5 A/g. This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effect of GCN and Ppy in the Ppy/GCN/MnO2 electrode material. The Ppy/GCN/MnO2 electrode in KOH has average specific energy and specific power densities of 172 Wh kg−1 and 2065 W kg−1, respectively. Only 2 % of the capacitance’s initial value is lost after 10,000 cycles. The resulting Ppy/GCN/MnO2 nanocomposite had very stable and porous layered structures. This work demonstrates that Ppy/GCN/MnO2 nanomaterials exhibit good structural stability and electrochemical performance and are good materials for supercapacitor applications.

AEKA: FPGA Implementation of Area-Efficient Karatsuba Accelerator for Ring-Binary-LWE-Based Lightweight PQC

Lightweight PQC-related research and development have gradually gained attention from the research community recently. Ring-Binary-Learning-with-Errors (RBLWE)-based encryption scheme (RBLWE-ENC), a promising lightweight PQC based on small parameter sets to fit related applications (but not in favor of deploying popular fast algorithms like number theoretic transform). To solve this problem, in this article, we present a novel implementation of hardware acceleration for RBLWE-ENC based on Karatsuba algorithm, particularly on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. In detail, we have proposed an area-efficient Karatsuba Accelerator (AEKA) for RBLWE-ENC, based on three layers of innovative efforts. First of all, we reformulate the signal processing sequence within the major arithmetic component of the KA-based polynomial multiplication for RBLWE-ENC to obtain a new algorithm. Then, we have designed the proposed algorithm into a new hardware accelerator with several novel algorithm-to-architecture mapping techniques. Finally, we have conducted thorough complexity analysis and comparison to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed accelerator, e.g., it involves 62.5% higher throughput and 60.2% less area-delay product (ADP) than the state-of-the-art design for n =512 (Virtex-7 device, similar setup). The proposed AEKA design strategy is highly efficient on the FPGA devices, i.e., small resource usage with superior timing, which can be integrated with other necessary systems for lightweight-oriented high-performance applications (e.g., servers). The outcome of this work is also expected to generate impacts for lightweight PQC advancement.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Electrodeposition of Mn-Doped NiCo2O4 for Enhanced Photodegradation of Methyl Red, Hydrogen Production, and Supercapacitor Applications

This paper presents a novel ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition process of Mn-doped NiCo2O4 onto a commercial nickel foam in a neutral electroplating bath (pH = 7.0) under an ultrasonic power of 1.2 V and 100 W. Different sample properties were studied based on their crystallinity through X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphology was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photodegradation was studied through ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometry. Based on the XRD results, the dominant crystallite phase obtained was shown to be a pure single NiCo2O4 phase. The optical properties of the photocatalytic film showed a range of energy band gaps between 1.72 and 1.73 eV from the absorption spectrum. The surface hydroxyl groups on the catalytic surface of the Mn-doped NiCo2O4 thin films showed significant improvements in removing methyl red via photodegradation, achieving 88% degradation in 60 min, which was approximately 1.6 times higher than that of pure NiCo2O4 thin films. The maximum hydrogen rate of the composite films under 100 mW/cm2 illumination was 38 μmol/cm2 with a +3.5 V external potential. The electrochemical performance test also showed a high capacity retention rate (96% after 5000 charge–discharge cycles), high capacity (260 Fg−1), and low intrinsic resistance (0.8 Ω). This work concludes that the Mn-doped NiCo2O4 hybrid with oxygen-poor conditions (oxygen vacancies) is a promising composite electrode candidate for methyl red removal, hydrogen evolution, and high-performance hybrid supercapacitor applications.

Precise Construction of Nitrogen-Enriched Porous Ionic Polymers as Highly Efficient Sulfur Dioxide Adsorbent.

Porous ionic polymers with unique features have exhibited high performance in various applications. However, the fabrication of functional porous ionic polymers with custom functionality and porosity for efficient removal of low-concentration SO2 remains challenging. Herein, a novel nitrogen-enriched porous ionic polymer NH2Py-PIP is prepared featuring high-content nitrogen sites (15.9wt.%), adequate ionic sites (1.22mmolg-1), and a hierarchical porous structure. The proposed construction pathway relies on a tailored nitrogen-functionalized cross-linker NH2Py, which effectively introduces abundant functional sites and improves the porosity of porous ionic polymers. NH2Py-PIP with a well-engineered SO2-affinity environment achieves excellent SO2/CO2 selectivity (1165) and high SO2 adsorption capacity (1.13mmolg-1 at 0.002bar), as well as enables highly efficient and reversible dynamic separation performance. Modeling studies further elucidate that the nitrogen sites and bromide anions collaboratively promote preferential adsorption of SO2. The unique design in this work provides new insights into constructing functional porous ionic polymers for high-efficiency separations.

Sub-5 nm Ultrathin In2O3 Transistors for High-Performance and Low-Power Electronic Applications.

Ultrathin oxide semiconductors are promising candidates for back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible transistors and monolithic three-dimensional integration. Experimentally, ultrathin indium oxide (In2O3) field-effect transistors (FETs) with thicknesses down to 0.4 nm exhibit an extremely high drain current (104 μA/μm) and transconductance (4000 μS/μm). Here, we employ ab initio quantum transport simulation to investigate the performance limit of sub-5 nm gate length (Lg) ultrathin In2O3 FETs. Based on the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) criteria for high-performance (HP) devices, the scaling limit of ultrathin In2O3 FETs can reach 2 nm in terms of on-state current, delay time, and power dissipation. The wide bandgap nature of ultrathin In2O3 (3.0 eV) renders it a suitable candidate for ITRS low-power (LP) electronics with Lg down to 3 nm. Notably, both the HP and LP ultrathin In2O3 FETs exhibit superior energy-delay products as compared to those of other common 2D semiconductors such as monolayer MoS2 and MoTe2. These findings unveil the potential of ultrathin In2O3 in HP and LP nanoelectronic device applications.

Enhancing mechanical properties and defects elimination in 2024 aluminum alloy through interlayer friction stir processing in wire arc additive manufacturing

In this study, a hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and interlayer friction stir processing (IFSP) approach was utilized to enhance the quality of 2024 aluminum alloy components. The defects characteristic, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties of the fabricated components and after T6 heat treatment were analyzed systematically. Our analysis reveals that IFSP can break and dissolve the eutectic phases, significantly reduce porosity defects and refine the grain size of the as-deposited materials, thus improving the overall mechanical properties. Notably, compared to the WAAM as-deposited component, the yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) in the top-layer stir zone (SZ) of IFSP component increased from 154 ± 3 to 267 ± 2 MPa, and from 258 ± 12 to 360 ± 3 MPa, respectively. However, in the middle-layer SZ, S-phase precipitation and coarsening induced by thermal cycling during additive manufacturing slightly reduced the tensile properties. Post-T6 heat treatment led to uniformly distributed properties in the IFSP component along both horizontal and vertical directions, with the YS, UTS, and elongation (EL) averaging 353 ± 9 MPa, 470 ± 4 MPa, and 10.5 ± 1.6%, closely matching those of wrought counterparts. The significant improvements in mechanical properties are primarily attributed to the elimination of porosity and precipitation of fine needle-like S-phase. This research not only demonstrates the potential of IFSP in enhancing the mechanical properties of WAAM-fabricated 2024 aluminum alloy but also offers a promising technique for producing high-quality components suitable for high-performance aerospace applications.

Tribological and mechanical characterization of carbon-nanostructures based PEEK nanocomposites under extreme conditions for advanced bearings: A molecular dynamics study

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) carbon nanomaterial-based nanocomposites, incorporating zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) carbon structures have gained prominence as advanced materials with the potential to enhance tribological properties paving the way for a new era in the development of advanced bearings for high-performance machinery applications. This study delves into the forefront of friction and wear analysis, employing all atom molecular dynamics (aa-MD) simulations to engineer PEEK polymer nanocomposites with precision under elevated temperature and higher velocity. The research presents optimization of mechanical strength and tribological properties crucial to meet the demanding requirements of industrial machinery. The addition of C60 fullerenes reduced COF by 16.59% and wear rates by 6.52% due to its spherical shape and lubrication effects. Introduction of carbon-nanotubes further decreased COF by 54.54% and wear rates by 32.5%, offering resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. S-graphene showed notable performance, reducing COF by 69.40% and wear rates by 75.03%, making it promising for sliding and wear applications. Carbon-nanocones reduced COF by 60.6% and wear rates by 72.06%, slightly higher than S-Gr due to abrasive effects and increased surface contact. These findings underscore the potential of reinforcement dimensionality in enhancing the tribological properties of PEEK based nanocomposites.

Entropy Engineering Constrain Phase Transitions Enable Ultralong-life Prussian Blue Analogs Cathodes.

Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are considered as one of the most potential electrode materials in capacitive deionization (CDI) due to their unique 3D framework structure. However, their practical applications suffer from low desalination capacity and poor cyclic stability. Here, an entropy engineering strategy is proposed that incorporates high-entropy (HE) concept into PBAs to address the unfavorable multistage phase transitions during CDI desalination. By introducing five or more metals, which share N coordination site, high-entropy hexacyanoferrate (HE-HCF) is constructed, thereby increasing the configurational entropy of the system to above 1.5R and placing it into the high-entropy category. As a result, the developed HE-HCF demonstrates remarkable cycling performance, with a capacity retention rate of over 97% after undergoing 350 ultralong-life cycles of adsorption/desorption. Additionally, it exhibits a high desalination capacity of 77.24mg g-1 at 1.2V. Structural characterization and theoretical calculation reveal that high configurational entropy not only helps to restrain phase transition and strengthen structural stability, but also optimizes Na+ ions diffusion path and energy barrier, accelerates reaction kinetics and thus improves performance. This research introduces a new approach for designing electrodes with high performance, low cost, and long-lasting durability for capacitive deionization applications.
