The Bi–O edge wavefront sensor

Context. Direct detection of exoplanets around nearby stars requires advanced adaptive optics (AO) systems. High-order systems are needed to reach a high Strehl ratio (SR) in near-infrared and optical wavelengths on future giant segmented-mirror telescopes (GSMTs). Direct detection of faint exoplanets with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will require some tens of thousands of correction modes. The resolution and sensitivity of the wavefront sensor (WFS) are key requirements for this science case. We present a new class of WFSs, the bi-orthogonal Foucault knife-edge sensors (or Bi–O edge), that is directly inspired by the Foucault knife-edge test. The idea consists of using a beam-splitter producing two foci, each of which is sensed by an edge with a direction orthogonal to the other focus. Aims. We describe two implementation concepts: The Bi–O edge sensor can be realised with a sharp edge and a tip-tilt modulation device (sharp Bi–O edge) or with a smooth gradual transmission over a grey edge (grey Bi–O edge). A comparison of the Bi–O edge concepts and the four-sided classical pyramid wavefront sensor (PWS) gives some important insights into the nature of the measurements. Methods. We analytically computed the photon noise error propagation, and we compared the results to end-to-end simulations of a closed-loop AO system. Results. Our analysis shows that the sensitivity gain of the Bi–O edge with respect to the PWS depends on the system configuration. The gain is a function of the number of control modes and the modulation angle. We found that for the sharp Bi–O edge, the gain in reduction of propagated photon noise variance approaches a theoretical factor of 2 for a large number of control modes and small modulation angle, meaning that the sharp Bi–O edge only needs half of the photons of the PWS to reach similar measurement accuracy. In contrast, the PWS is twice more sensitive than the Bi–O edge in the case of very low order correction and/or large modulation angles. Preliminary end-to-end simulations illustrate some of the results. The grey version of the Bi–O edge opens the door to advanced amplitude filtering, which replaces the need for a tip-tilt modulator while keeping the same dynamic range. We show that an additional factor of 2 in reduction of propagated photon noise variance can be obtained for high orders, such that the theoretical maximum gain of a factor of 4 in photon efficiency can be obtained. A diffractive Fourier model that accurately includes the effect of modulation and control modes shows that for the extreme AO (XAO) system configuration of the ELT, the overall gain will well exceed one magnitude in guide-star brightness when compared to the modulated PWS. Conclusions. We conclude that the Bi–O edge is an excellent candidate sensor for future very high order Adaptive Optics systems, in particular on GSMTs.

Performance of the adaptive optics system for Laser Communications Relay Demonstration's Ground Station 1.

The Laser Communications Relay Demonstration is NASA's multi-year demonstration of laser communication from the Earth to a geosynchronous satellite. The mission currently has two optical ground stations (OGSs), with one in California (OGS1) and one in Hawaii (OGS2). Each ground terminal optical system consists of a high-order adaptive optics (AO) system, a laser transmit system, and a camera for target acquisition. The OGS1 AO system is responsible for compensating for the downlink beam for atmospheric turbulence and coupling it into the modem's single mode fiber. The mission requires a coupling efficiency of 50%, which necessitates a high-order AO system. To achieve this performance, the AO system uses two deformable mirrors with one mirror correcting for low-spatial-frequency aberrations with large amplitude and a second deformable mirror correcting for high-spatial-frequency aberrations with small amplitude. Turbulence is sensed with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. To meet its performance requirements in the most stressing conditions, the system can operate at frame rates of 20kHz. This high frame rate is enabled by the design of the real-time control system. We present an overview of both the hardware and software design of the system, and describe the control system and methods of reducing non-common path aberrations. Finally, we show measured system performance.

Calibration and performance evaluation of a monomorph deformable mirror

To achieve diffraction-limited performance with a 50 cm solar telescope at the Udaipur solar observatory the development of a high-order adaptive optics (AO) system is currently in progress. The system includes a monomorph deformable mirror (MDM) with 85 actuators and 35 mm diameter that servers as a wavefront corrector. Prior to using the MDM in an AO system, the MDM is calibrated, and its performance is evaluated using a laboratory source. Aim is to determine the extent of intrinsic aberrations of the MDM and the optimum voltage vector that makes the MDM optically flat, so that the MDM can be used in the optical setup without introducing any aberrations. Here, we present the details of the calibration of the MDM and its performance in correcting a static error. For this purpose, Fizeau interferometry and Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensing (SHWFS) methods are employed for sensing the wavefront distortions. A static defocus error is corrected in closed-loop such that the rms wavefront error is reduced from nearly 600 nm to about 20 nm in less than ten iterations using a laser interferometer and the SHWFS. Our study shows the extent of intrinsic aberrations of the MDM has to be factored in an operational AO system.

A correlation-locking adaptive filtering technique for minimum variance integral control in adaptive optics

We propose the correlation-locking optimization scheme (CLOSE), a real-time adaptive filtering technique for adaptive optics (AO) systems controlled with integrators. CLOSE leverages the temporal autocorrelation of modal signals in the controller telemetry and drives the gains of the integral command law in a closed servo-loop. This supervisory loop is configured using only a few scalar parameters and automatically controls the modal gains to closely match transfer functions achieving minimum variance control. This optimization is proven to work throughout the range of noise and seeing conditions relevant to the AO system. This technique was designed while preparing the high-order AO systems for extremely large telescopes, in particular to tackle the optical gain (OG) phenomenon. This is a sensitivity reduction induced by on-sky residuals and is a prominent issue with pyramid wavefront sensors (PWFS). CLOSE follows upon the linear modal compensation approach to OG that was previously demonstrated to substantially improve AO correction with high-order PWFS systems. Operating on modal gains through multiplicative increments, CLOSE naturally compensates for the recurring issue of unaccounted sensitivity factors throughout the AO loop. We present end-to-end simulations of the MICADO instrument single-conjugate AO to demonstrate the performances and capabilities of CLOSE. We demonstrate that a single configuration provides an efficient and versatile optimization of the modal integrator while accounting for OG compensation and while providing significant robustness to transient effects impacting the PWFS sensitivity.

The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope \u2013 Observatory Overview

We present an overview of the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), its instruments, and support facilities. The 4 m aperture DKIST provides the highest-resolution observations of the Sun ever achieved. The large aperture of DKIST combined with state-of-the-art instrumentation provide the sensitivity to measure the vector magnetic field in the chromosphere and in the faint corona, i.e. for the first time with DKIST we will be able to measure and study the most important free-energy source in the outer solar atmosphere – the coronal magnetic field. Over its operational lifetime DKIST will advance our knowledge of fundamental astronomical processes, including highly dynamic solar eruptions that are at the source of space-weather events that impact our technological society. Design and construction of DKIST took over two decades. DKIST implements a fast (f/2), off-axis Gregorian optical design. The maximum available field-of-view is 5 arcmin. A complex thermal-control system was implemented in order to remove at prime focus the majority of the 13 kW collected by the primary mirror and to keep optical surfaces and structures at ambient temperature, thus avoiding self-induced local seeing. A high-order adaptive-optics system with 1600 actuators corrects atmospheric seeing enabling diffraction limited imaging and spectroscopy. Five instruments, four of which are polarimeters, provide powerful diagnostic capability over a broad wavelength range covering the visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared spectrum. New polarization-calibration strategies were developed to achieve the stringent polarization accuracy requirement of 5×10−4. Instruments can be combined and operated simultaneously in order to obtain a maximum of observational information. Observing time on DKIST is allocated through an open, merit-based proposal process. DKIST will be operated primarily in “service mode” and is expected to on average produce 3 PB of raw data per year. A newly developed data center located at the NSO Headquarters in Boulder will initially serve fully calibrated data to the international users community. Higher-level data products, such as physical parameters obtained from inversions of spectro-polarimetric data will be added as resources allow.

Spectro-polarimetric observations at the NVST: I. instrumental polarization calibration and primary measurements

This paper is devoted to the primary spectro-polarimetric observation performed at the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) of China since 2017, and our aim is to precisely evaluate the real polarimetric accuracy and sensitivity of this polarimetry by using full Stokes spectro-polarimetric observations of the photospheric line Fe I 532.4 nm. In the work, we briefly describe the salient characteristic of the NVST as a polarimeter in terms of technology and then characterize its instrumental polarization based on the operation in 2017 and 2019. It is verified that the calibration method utilizing the instrumental polarization calibration unit (ICU) is stable and credible. The calibration accuracy can reach up to 3 × 10−3. Based on the scientific observation of NOAA Active Region 12645 on 2017 April 5, we estimate that the residual cross-talk from Stokes I to Stokes Q, U and V, after the instrumental polarization calibration, is about 4 × 10−3 on average, which is consistent with the calibration accuracy and close to the photon noise. The polarimetric sensitivity (i.e., the detection limit) for polarized light is of the order of 10−3 with an integration time over 20 s. Slow modulation rate is indeed an issue for the present system. The present NVST polarimeter is expected to be integrated with a high-order adaptive optics system and a field scanner to realize 2D vector magnetic field measurements in the following instrumentation update.

Simulations and experiments on the noise suppression in the calibration of a 961-element adaptive optics system

Traditionally, the calibration matrix of a high-order adaptive optics system often suffers from the high noise, when the traditional push-pull calibration strategy is used. In this paper, taking a 961-element adaptive optics system as an example, the influence of calibration noise on the calibration matrix is analyzed, and the effects of filtering the influence matrix in the spatial domain are evaluated by numerical simulation, respectively. Finally, an experiment is conducted in the 961-element adaptive optics system and the results prove that filtering in the spatial domain is effective for the suppression of calibration noise.

SOWAT: Speckle Observations with Alleviated Turbulence

Adaptive optics (AO) systems and image reconstruction algorithms are indispensable tools when it comes to high-precision astrometry. In this paper, we analyze the potential of combining both techniques, i.e., by applying image reconstruction on partially AO-corrected short exposures. Therefore we simulate speckle clouds with and without AO corrections and create synthetic observations. We apply holographic image reconstruction to the obtained observations and find that (i) the residual wavefronts decorrelate slowlier and to a lower limit when AO systems are used, (ii) the same reference stars yield a better reconstruction, and (iii) using fainter reference stars we achieve a similar image quality. These results suggest that holographic imaging of speckle observations is feasible with ∼2–3× longer integration times and ∼3 mag fainter reference stars, to obtain diffraction-limited imaging from low-order AO systems that are less restricted in sky coverage than typical high-order AO systems.

Optimized calibration strategy for high order adaptive optics systems in closed-loop: the slope-oriented Hadamard actuation.

The accurate calibration of the interaction matrix affects the performance of an adaptive optics system. In the case of high-order systems, when the number of mirror modes is worth a few thousands, the calibration strategy is critical to reach the maximum interaction matrix quality in the minimum time. This is all the more true for the future European Extremely Large Telescope. Here, we propose a novel calibration scheme, the Slope-Oriented Hadamard strategy. We then build a tractable interaction matrix quality criterion, and show that our method tends to optimize it. We demonstrate that for a given level of quality, the calibration time needed using the Slope-Oriented Hadamard method is seven times less than with a classical Hadamard scheme. These analytic and simulation results are confirmed experimentally on the SPHERE XAO system (SAXO).

On-sky demonstration of optimal control for adaptive optics at Palomar Observatory.

High-order adaptive optics systems often suffer from significant computational latency, which ultimately limits the temporal error rejection bandwidth when classical controllers are employed. This Letter presents results from an on-sky, real-time implementation of an optimal controller on the PALM-3000 adaptive optics system at Palomar Observatory. The optimal controller is computed directly from open-loop wavefront measurements using a multichannel subspace system identification algorithm, and mitigates latency by explicitly predicting incident turbulence. Experimental results show a significant reduction in the residual wavefront error over the controlled spatial modes, illustrating the superior performance of the optimal control approach versus the nominal integral control architecture.

Multichannel-Hadamard calibration of high-order adaptive optics systems.

we present a novel technique of calibrating the interaction matrix for high-order adaptive optics systems, called the multichannel-Hadamard method. In this method, the deformable mirror actuators are firstly divided into a series of channels according to their coupling relationship, and then the voltage-oriented Hadamard method is applied to these channels. Taking the 595-element adaptive optics system as an example, the procedure is described in detail. The optimal channel dividing is discussed and tested by numerical simulation. The proposed method is also compared with the voltage-oriented Hadamard only method and the multichannel only method by experiments. Results show that the multichannel-Hadamard method can produce significant improvement on interaction matrix measurement.

Scientific Programmes with India's National Large Solar Telescope and their contribution to Prominence Research

AbstractThe primary objective of the 2-m National Large Solar Telescope (NLST) is to study the solar atmosphere with high spatial and spectral resolution. With an innovative optical design, NLST is an on-axis Gregorian telescope with a low number of optical elements and a high throughput. In addition, it is equipped with a high order adaptive optics system to produce close to diffraction limited performance.NLST will address a large number of scientific questions with a focus on high resolution observations. With NLST, high spatial resolution observations of prominences will be possible in multiple spectral lines. Studies of magnetic fields, filament eruptions as a whole, and the dynamics of filaments on fine scales using high resolution observations will be some of the major areas of focus.

Optical design of the new solar telescope GREGOR

AbstractThis article describes the considerations which led to the current optical design of the new 1.5 m solar telescope GREGOR. The result is Gregorian design with two real foci in the optical train. The telescope includes a relay optic with a pupil image used by a high order adaptive optics system (AO). The optical design is described in detail and performance characteristics are given. Finally we show some verification results which prove that – without atmospheric effects – the completed telescope reaches a diffraction limited performance (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The 1.5 meter solar telescope GREGOR

AbstractThe 1.5 m telescope GREGOR opens a new window to the understanding of solar small‐scale magnetism. The first light instrumentation includes the Gregor Fabry Pérot Interferometer (GFPI), a filter spectro‐polarimeter for the visible wavelength range, the GRating Infrared Spectro‐polarimeter (GRIS) and the Broad‐Band Imager (BBI). The excellent performance of the first two instruments has already been demonstrated at the Vacuum Tower Telescope. GREGOR is Europe’s largest solar telescope and number 3 in the world. Its all‐reflective Gregory design provides a large wavelength coverage from the near UV up to at least 5 microns. The field of view has a diameter of 150″. GREGOR is equipped with a high‐order adaptive optics system, with a subaperture size of 10 cm, and a deformable mirror with 256 actuators. The science goals are focused on, but not limited to, solar magnetism. GREGOR allows us to measure the emergence and disappearance of magnetic flux at the solar surface at spatial scales well below 100 km. Thanks to its spectro‐polarimetric capabilities, GREGOR will measure the interaction between the plasma flows, different kinds of waves, and the magnetic field. This will foster our understanding of the processes that heat the chromosphere and the outer layers of the solar atmosphere. A Data-Cube Extraction Pipeline for a Coronagraphic Integral Field Spectrograph

ABSTRACTProject 1640 is a high-contrast near-infrared instrument probing the vicinities of nearby stars through the unique combination of an integral field spectrograph with a Lyot coronagraph and a high-order adaptive optics system. The extraordinary data-reduction demands, similar to those that several new exoplanet imaging instruments will face in the near future, have been met by the novel software algorithms described herein. The Project 1640 Data Cube Extraction Pipeline (PCXP) automates the translation of 3.8 × 104 closely packed, coarsely sampled spectra to a data cube. We implement a robust empirical model of the spectrograph focal-plane geometry to register the detector image at subpixel precision, and we map the cube extraction. We demonstrate our ability to accurately retrieve source spectra based on an observation of Saturn’s moon Titan.

Laboratory comparison of coronagraphic concepts under dynamical seeing and high-order adaptive optics correction

The exoplanetary science through direct imaging and spectroscopy will largely expand with the forthcoming development of new instruments at the VLT (SPHERE), Gemini (GPI), Subaru (HiCIAO), and Palomar (Project 1640) observatories. All these ground-based adaptive optics instruments combine extremely high performance adaptive optics (XAO) systems correcting for the atmospheric turbulence with advanced starlight-cancellation techniques such as coronagraphy to deliver contrast ratios of about 10-6 to 10-7. While the past fifteen years have seen intensive research and the development of high-contrast coronagraph concepts, very few concepts have been tested under dynamical seeing conditions (either during sky observation or in a realistic laboratory environment). In this paper, we discuss the results obtained with four different coronagraphs -- phase and amplitude types -- on the High-Order Testbench (HOT), the adaptive optics facility developed at ESO. This facility emphasizes realistic conditions encountered at a telescope (e.g., VLT), including a turbulence generator and a high-order adaptive optics system. It enables to evaluate the performance of high-contrast coronagraphs in the near-IR operating with an AO-corrected PSF of 90% Strehl ratio under 0.5 arcsec dynamical seeing.

Laboratory characterization and performance of the high-order adaptive optics system for the Large Binocular Telescope

We present the laboratory characterization and performance evaluation of the First Light Adaptive Optics (FLAO), the natural guide star adaptive optics system for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). The system uses an adaptive secondary mirror with 672 actuators and a pyramid wavefront sensor with adjustable sampling of the telescope pupil from 30×30 down to 7×7 subapertures. The system was fully assembled in the Arcetri Observatory laboratories and passed its acceptance test in December 2009. The performance measured at different star magnitudes during the acceptance test is shown to lie between the baseline and the goal specifications. In particular, FLAO obtained a 77% Strehl ratio (SR) in the bright end (8.5 magnitude star in the R band) using an H-band filter and correcting 495 modes with 30×30 subaperture sampling. In the faint end (16.4 magnitude), a 5% SR correcting 36 modes with 7×7 subapertures was measured. The seeing conditions for these tests were 0.8 arcsec (r0=0.14 m at 550 nm) and an average wind speed of 15 m/s. The results for other seeing conditions up to 1.5 arcsec are also presented. The system has been shipped to the LBT site in Arizona, and its commissioning started in March 2010.

Laboratory Demonstration of Efficient XAO Coronagraphy in the Context of SPHERE

ABSTRACTExtreme adaptive optics systems (XAO) dedicated to the search for extrasolar planets are currently being developed for 8–10 m telescopes. The high-order test bench (HOT) is a high-contrast imaging adaptive optics bench developed at the European Southern Observatory to test and optimize different techniques and technologies (e.g., wavefront sensors, coronagraphs, speckle calibration methods, image postprocessing). It reproduces realistic conditions at a telescope (e.g., Very Large Telescope, VLT), including a turbulence generator, a high-order adaptive optics system, and a near-IR coronagraph. We discuss the results of XAO coronagraphy obtained in the laboratory in the context of imminent planet-finder instruments (e.g., SPHERE, GPI, and HiCIAO). In particular, results obtained with HOT will be discussed and compared with contrast goals of the near-IR camera of SPHERE. Under a generated dynamical turbulence of 0.5″ seeing, which is efficiently corrected by the XAO system to an H-band Strehl ratio above 90%, and combined with a near-IR coronagraph, we demonstrate contrasts of 5 × 10-5 at 0.1″, and 4.5 × 10-6 at 0.5″. Contrasts were obtained using differential imaging techniques by sequentially taking either a series of two closely-spaced narrowband filter images in H band centered around 1.6 μm, or two images with orthogonal polarization states. Results obtained in the laboratory are in good agreement with the contrast goals of SPHERE, which provides confidence in the expected performance of this class of instruments.

Extreme adaptive optics in the mid-IR: The METIS AO system

METIS, the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, is currently in its phase A study as one of the candidate first-light instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope. METIS will feature several observational modes, ranging from diffraction limited imaging in L, M and N-bands to high-resolution Integral Field spectroscopy for the L and M-bands. METIS in its current design gives sensitivities similar to Spitzer in imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy and with its high-resolution spectrograph will provide unprecedented line sensitivity. The design of METIS is optimized for both galactic science cases (e.g. conditions in the early solar system, formation and evolution of proto-planetary disks and properties of exoplanets) and extragalactic science cases (e.g. the growth of Supermassive Black Holes). METIS will require a high-order adaptive optics (AO) system to meet its scientific goals, both to provide correction for atmospheric turbulence as well as reduce the impact of wind shake, leading to a residual image motion of 3 - 5 mas rms. METIS is expected to feature both an internal Single Conjugate AO system as well as an external Laser Tomography AO system. The challenges for the METIS AO system are mainly in the broad correction range, an excellent image stability required for coronagraphy and in providing a high sky coverage to be available for as many science targets as possible. An additional challenge for METIS is the need to compensate for composition turbulence, mainly in the form of fast fluctuations in water vapor concentration. Water vapor fluctuations impact the performance of METIS in several ways: Atmospheric dispersion causes a broadening of the point-spread function, both in the science channel and the wavefront channel, but can be corrected using a Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector. Variations in the water vapor composition cannot be corrected this way and are currently estimated to give a residual image motion of ≤10 mas rms. This effect can, especially for coronagraphy, not be neglected. Chromatic optical path difference errors, caused by changes in the index of refraction along the path through the atmosphere were found to be negligible in the case of METIS due to attenuation by the outer scale (at typical values of 25 m). Chromatic anisoplanatism is the effect that the light at different wavelengths travels through a slightly different light path through the atmosphere and can be–at least partly–corrected. The last effect is composition turbulence, mainly caused by fast (> 1 Hz) fluctuations in the water vapor content. Based on data for ALMA and radiometer probes, this leads to a maximum loss in Strehl ratio between 5 and 10%. This mainly has an impact on coronagraphy and the METIS AO team is actively investigating ways to compensate also water vapor turbulence. The main challenge is currently obtaining reliable data on the distribution and magnitude of precipitable water vapor fluctuations.

SPECKLE SUPPRESSION THROUGH DUAL IMAGING POLARIMETRY, AND A GROUND-BASED IMAGE OF THE HR 4796A CIRCUMSTELLAR DISK

We demonstrate the versatility of a dual imaging polarimeter working in tandem with a Lyot coronagraph and adaptive optics to suppress the highly static speckle noise pattern—the greatest hindrance to ground-based direct imaging of planets and disks around nearby stars. Using a double difference technique with the polarimetric data, we quantify the level of speckle suppression, and hence improved sensitivity, by placing an ensemble of artificial faint companions into real data, with given total brightness and polarization. For highly polarized sources within 0. 5, we show that we achieve 3 to 4 mag greater sensitivity through polarimetric speckle suppression than simply using a coronagraph coupled to a high-order adaptive optics system. Using such a polarimeter with a classical Lyot coronagraph at the 3.63 m Advanced Electro-Optical System telescope, we have obtained a 6.5! detection in the H band of the 76 AU diameter circumstellar debris disk around the star HR 4796A. Our data represent the first definitive ground-based near-IR polarimetric image of the HR 4796A debris disk and clearly show the two outer ansae of the disk, evident in Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS/STIS imaging. Comparing our peak linearly polarized flux with the total intensity in the lobes as observed by NICMOS, we derive a lower limit to the fractional linear polarization of >29% caused by dust grains in the disk. In addition, we fit simple morphological models of optically thin disks to our data allowing us to constrain the dust disk scale height (2.5 +5.0 # 1.3 AU) and scattering asymmetry parameter (g =$ cos %= 0.20 +.07 # .10 ). These values are consistent with several lines of evidence suggesting that the HR 4796A disk is dominated by a micron-sized dust population, and are indeed typical of disks in transition between those surrounding the Herbig Ae stars to those associated with Vega-like stars.
