High-Fidelity State Preparation, Quantum Control, and Readout of an Isotopically Enriched Silicon Spin Qubit

Quantum systems must be prepared, controlled, and measured with high fidelity in order to perform complex quantum algorithms. Control fidelities have greatly improved in silicon spin qubits, but state preparation and readout fidelities have generally been poor. By operating with low electron temperatures and employing high-bandwidth cryogenic amplifiers, we demonstrate single qubit readout visibilities >99%, exceeding the threshold for quantum error correction. In the same device, we achieve average single qubit control fidelities >99.95%. Our results show that silicon spin qubits can be operated with high overall operation fidelity.

Learning quantum-state feedback control with backpropagation-free stochastic optimization

High-fidelity state preparation represents a fundamental challenge in the application of quantum technology. While the majority of optimal control approaches use feedback to improve the controller, the controller itself often does not incorporate explicit state dependence. Here, we present a general framework for training deep feedback networks for open quantum systems with continuous weak measurement that allows a variety of system and control structures that are prohibitive by many other techniques and can in effect react to unmodeled effects through nonlinear filtering. Our approach benefits from characteristics of both stochastic sampling and gradient-based optimization methods yet does not require differentiability as in backpropagation approaches. We demonstrate that this method is efficient due to inherent parallelizability, robust to open system interactions, and outperforms landmark state-dependent feedback control results in simulation.

High Fidelity State Preparation and Measurement of Ion Hyperfine Qubits with I>1/2.

We present a method for achieving high fidelity state preparation and measurement (SPAM) using trapped ion hyperfine qubits with nuclear spins higher than I=1/2. The ground states of these higher nuclear spin isotopes do not afford a simple frequency-selective state preparation scheme. We circumvent this limitation by stroboscopically driving strong and weak transitions, blending fast optical pumping using dipole transitions, and narrow microwave or optical quadrupole transitions. We demonstrate this method with the I=3/2 isotope ^{137}Ba^{+} to achieve a SPAM infidelity of (9.0±1.3)×10^{-5} (-40.5±0.6 dB), facilitating the use of a wider range of ion isotopes with favorable wavelengths and masses for quantum computation.

Two-qubit silicon quantum processor with operation fidelity exceeding 99.

Silicon spin qubits satisfy the necessary criteria for quantum information processing. However, a demonstration of high-fidelity state preparation and readout combined with high-fidelity single- and two-qubit gates, all of which must be present for quantum error correction, has been lacking. We use a two-qubit Si/SiGe quantum processor to demonstrate state preparation and readout with fidelity greater than 97%, combined with both single- and two-qubit control fidelities exceeding 99%. The operation of the quantum processor is quantitatively characterized using gate set tomography and randomized benchmarking. Our results highlight the potential of silicon spin qubits to become a dominant technology in the development of intermediate-scale quantum processors.

New progress of silicon-based semiconductor quantum computation

<sec>Spin qubits in silicon-based semiconductor quantum dots have become one of the prominent candidates for realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing due to their long coherence time, good controllability, and compatibility with modern advanced integrated circuit manufacturing processes. In recent years, due to the remarkable advances in silicon-based materials, the structure of quantum dot and its fabrication process, and qubit manipulation technology, the great progress of high-fidelity state preparation and readout, single- and two-qubit gates of spin qubits for silicon based semiconductor quantum computation has been achieved. The control fidelities for single- and two-qubit gates all exceed 99%—fault tolerance threshold required by the surface code known for its exceptionally high tolerance to errors. In this paper, we briefly introduce the basic concepts of silicon-based semiconductor quantum dots, discuss the state-of-art technologies used to improve the fidelities of single- and two-qubit gates, and finally highlight the research directions that should be focused on.</sec><sec>This paper is organized as follows. Firstly, we introduce three major types of quantum dot (QD) devices fabricated on different silicon-based substrates, including Si/SiGe heterojunction and Si/SiO<sub>2</sub>. The spin degree of electron or nucleus hosted in QD can be encoded into spin qubits. Electron spin qubits can be thermally initialized to ground state by using an electron reservoirs, and can be read out by spin-charge conversion mechanism: energy-selective readout (Elzerman readout) with reservoirs or Pauli spin blockade (PSB) without reservoirs. Additionally, high fidelity single-shot readout has been demonstrated by using radio-frequency gate reflectometry combined with the PSB, which has unique advantages in large-scale qubit array. To coherently control the spin qubits, electron dipole resonance (ESR) or electron dipole spin resonance (EDSR) for electron and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for nucleus are introduced. With the help of isotope purification greatly improving the dephasing time of qubit and fast single-qubit manipulation based on EDSR, fidelity above 99.9% can be reached. For the two-qubit gates based on exchange interaction between electron spins, the strength of interaction <inline-formula><tex-math id="M1">\begin{document}$ J $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="23-20221900_M1.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="23-20221900_M1.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula> combined with Zeeman energy difference <inline-formula><tex-math id="M2">\begin{document}$ \Delta {E}_{z} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="23-20221900_M2.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="23-20221900_M2.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula> determines the energy levels of system, which lead to the different two-qubit gates, such as controlled-Z (CZ), controlled-Rotation (CROT), and the square root of the SWAP gate (<inline-formula><tex-math id="M3">\begin{document}$ \sqrt{\rm{S}\rm{W}\rm{A}\rm{P}} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="23-20221900_M3.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="23-20221900_M3.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>) gates. In order to improve the fidelity of two-qubit gates, a series of key technologies is used experimentally, they being isotope purification, symmetry operation, careful Hamiltonian engineering, and gate set tomography. Fidelity of two-qubit gates exceeding 99% has been demonstrated for electron spin qubits in Si/SiGe quantum dots and nuclear spin qubits in donors. These advances have pushed the silicon-based spin qubit platform to become a major stepping stone towards fault-tolerant quantum computation. Finally, we discuss the future study of spin qubits, that is, how to effectively expand the number of qubits, and many other problems to be explored and solved.</sec>

Robust preparation of many-body ground states in Jaynes\u2013Cummings lattices

Strongly correlated polaritons in Jaynes–Cummings (JC) lattices can exhibit quantum phase transitions between the Mott-insulating and superfluid phases at integer fillings. The prerequisite to observe such phase transitions is to pump polariton excitations into a JC lattice and prepare them into appropriate ground states. Despite previous efforts, it is still challenging to generate many-body states with high accuracy. Here, we present an approach for the robust preparation of many-body ground states of polaritons in finite-sized JC lattices by optimized nonlinear ramping. We apply a Landau–Zener type of estimation to this finite-sized system and derive the optimal ramping index for selected ramping trajectories, which can greatly improve the fidelity of the prepared states. With numerical simulation, we show that by choosing an appropriate ramping trajectory, the fidelity in this approach can remain close to unity in almost the entire parameter space. This approach can shed light on high-fidelity state preparation in quantum simulators and advance the implementation of quantum simulation with practical devices.

Quantum simulation and computing with Rydberg-interacting qubits

Arrays of optically trapped atoms excited to Rydberg states have recently emerged as a competitive physical platform for quantum simulation and computing, where high-fidelity state preparation and readout, quantum logic gates, and controlled quantum dynamics of more than 100 qubits have all been demonstrated. These systems are now approaching the point where reliable quantum computations with hundreds of qubits and realistically thousands of multiqubit gates with low error rates should be within reach for the first time. In this article, the authors give an overview of the Rydberg quantum toolbox, emphasizing the high degree of flexibility for encoding qubits, performing quantum operations, and engineering quantum many-body Hamiltonians. The authors then review the state-of-the-art concerning high-fidelity quantum operations and logic gates as well as quantum simulations in many-body regimes. Finally, the authors discuss computing schemes that are particularly suited to the Rydberg platform and some of the remaining challenges on the road to general purpose quantum simulators and quantum computers.

Half-minute-scale atomic coherence and high relative stability in a tweezer clock.

The preparation of large, low-entropy, highly coherent ensembles of identical quantum systems is fundamental for many studies in quantum metrology1, simulation2 and information3. However, the simultaneous realization of these properties remains a central challenge in quantum science across atomic and condensed-matter systems2,4-7. Here we leverage the favourable properties of tweezer-trapped alkaline-earth (strontium-88) atoms8-10, and introduce a hybrid approach to tailoring optical potentials that balances scalability, high-fidelity state preparation, site-resolved readout and preservation of atomic coherence. With this approach, we achieve trapping and optical-clock excited-state lifetimes exceeding 40 seconds in ensembles of approximately 150 atoms. This leads to half-minute-scale atomic coherence on an optical-clock transition, corresponding to quality factors well in excess of 1016. These coherence times and atom numbers reduce the effect of quantum projection noise to a level that is comparable with that ofleading atomic systems, which use optical lattices to interrogate many thousands of atoms in parallel11,12. The result is a relative fractional frequency stability of 5.2(3)×10-17τ-1/2 (where τ is the averaging time in seconds) for synchronous clock comparisons between sub-ensembles within the tweezer array. When further combined with the microscopic control and readout that are available in this system, these results pave the way towards long-lived engineered entanglement on an optical-clock transition13 in tailored atom arrays.

Inverse engineering of shortcut pulses for high fidelity initialization on qubits closely spaced in frequency.

High-fidelity qubit initialization is of significance for efficient error correction in fault tolerant quantum algorithms. Combining two best worlds, speed and robustness, to achieve high-fidelity state preparation and manipulation is challenging in quantum systems, where qubits are closely spaced in frequency. Motivated by the concept of shortcut to adiabaticity, we theoretically propose the shortcut pulses via inverse engineering and further optimize the pulses with respect to systematic errors in frequency detuning and Rabi frequency. Such protocol, relevant to frequency selectivity, is applied to rare-earth ions qubit system, where the excitation of frequency-neighboring qubits should be prevented as well. Furthermore, comparison with adiabatic complex hyperbolic secant pulses shows that these dedicated initialization pulses can reduce the time that ions spend in the excited state by a factor of 6, which is important in coherence time limited systems to approach an error rate manageable by quantum error correction. The approach may also be applicable to superconducting qubits, and any other systems where qubits are addressed in frequency.

Joint Quantum-State and Measurement Tomography with Incomplete Measurements.

Estimation of quantum states and measurements is crucial for the implementation of quantum information protocols. The standard method for each is quantum tomography. However, quantum tomography suffers from systematic errors caused by imperfect knowledge of the system. We present a procedure to simultaneously characterize quantum states and measurements that mitigates systematic errors by use of a single high-fidelity state preparation and a limited set of high-fidelity unitary operations. Such states and operations are typical of many state-of-the-art systems. For this situation we design a set of experiments and an optimization algorithm that alternates between maximizing the likelihood with respect to the states and measurements to produce estimates of each. In some cases, the procedure does not enable unique estimation of the states. For these cases, we show how one may identify a set of density matrices compatible with the measurements and use a semi-definite program to place bounds on the state's expectation values. We demonstrate the procedure on data from a simulated experiment with two trapped ions.

Speedup for quantum optimal control from automatic differentiation based on graphics processing units

We implement a quantum optimal control algorithm based on automatic differentiation and harness the acceleration afforded by graphics processing units (GPUs). Automatic differentiation allows us to specify advanced optimization criteria and incorporate them in the optimization process with ease. We show that the use of GPUs can speed up calculations by more than an order of magnitude. Our strategy facilitates efficient numerical simulations on affordable desktop computers, and exploration of a host of optimization constraints and system parameters relevant to real-life experiments. We demonstrate optimization of quantum evolution based on fine-grained evaluation of performance at each intermediate time step, thus enabling more intricate control on the evolution path, suppression of departures from the truncated model subspace, as well as minimization of the physical time needed to perform high-fidelity state preparation and unitary gates.

Dissipative production of a maximally entangled steady state of two quantum bits

Entangled states are a key resource in fundamental quantum physics, quantum cryptography and quantum computation. Introduction of controlled unitary processes--quantum gates--to a quantum system has so far been the most widely used method to create entanglement deterministically. These processes require high-fidelity state preparation and minimization of the decoherence that inevitably arises from coupling between the system and the environment, and imperfect control of the system parameters. Here we combine unitary processes with engineered dissipation to deterministically produce and stabilize an approximate Bell state of two trapped-ion quantum bits (qubits), independent of their initial states. Compared with previous studies that involved dissipative entanglement of atomic ensembles or the application of sequences of multiple time-dependent gates to trapped ions, we implement our combined process using trapped-ion qubits in a continuous time-independent fashion (analogous to optical pumping of atomic states). By continuously driving the system towards the steady state, entanglement is stabilized even in the presence of experimental noise and decoherence. Our demonstration of an entangled steady state of two qubits represents a step towards dissipative state engineering, dissipative quantum computation and dissipative phase transitions. Following this approach, engineered coupling to the environment may be applied to a broad range of experimental systems to achieve desired quantum dynamics or steady states. Indeed, concurrently with this work, an entangled steady state of two superconducting qubits was demonstrated using dissipation.
