The PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) Group is implementing a technical re-equipment program aimed at expanding the range of wire and bar-rolled products manufactured, import substitution, and providing the domestic market of the Russian Federation with high-quality articles. To ensure the capacities of the Magnitogorsk Wire Plant (OJSC MMK-METIZ) with high-quality semi-finished coiled rolled products, the small-section wire mill 170 of the PJSC MMK section shop was reconstructed. The key factors affecting the quality indicators of high-carbon wire rod have been studied, technical and technological solutions have been introduced that made it possible to increase the dispersion of pearlite in the microstructure of the wire rod, the uniformity of mechanical properties along the length of the coil, and also to reduce the depth of the decarburized layer. At the same time, work on improving the quality of the bar-rolled products manufactured does not stop. Research is being carried out to improve the quality of continuous cast billets, and a digital twin of the mill’s accelerated air cooling line is being developed as part of an initiative to digitize processes. The achieved results allowed the consumer to abandon one operation of intermediate heat treatment in the wire production process while ensuring the quality of the finished product, which significantly reduced the cost of production in the wire processing.
