Cenozoic Indo-Pacific warm pool controlled by both atmospheric CO2 and paleogeography

The Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) is crucial for regional and global climates. However, the development of the IPWP and its effect on the regional climate during the Cenozoic remain unclear. Here, using a compilation of sea surface temperature (SST) records (mainly since the middle Miocene) and multimodel paleoclimate simulations, our results indicated that the extent, intensity and warmest temperature position of the IPWP changed markedly during the Cenozoic. Specifically, its extent decreased, its intensity weakened, and its warmest temperature position shifted from the Indian to western Pacific Ocean over time. The atmospheric CO2 dominated its extent and intensity, while paleogeography, by restricting the distribution of the Indian Ocean and the width of the tropical seaways, controlled the shift in its warmest temperature position. In particular, the eastward shift to the western Pacific Ocean from the middle to late Miocene inferred from compiled SST records likely resulted from the constriction of tropical seaways. Furthermore, by changing the atmospheric thermal structure and atmospheric circulation, the reduced extent and intensity of the IPWP decreased the annual precipitation in the western Indian Ocean, eastern Asia and Australia, while the shift in the warmest temperature position from the Indian to western Pacific Ocean promoted aridification in Australia. Qualitative model-data agreements are obtained for both the IPWP SST and regional climate. From the perspective of past warm climates with high concentrations of atmospheric CO2, the expansion and strengthening of the IPWP will occur in a warmer future and favor excessive precipitation in eastern Asia and Australia.

Recent shift from dominant nitrogen to CO2 fertilization control on the growth of mature Qinghai spruce in China's Qilian Mountains

Terrestrial vegetation growth is stimulated by rising atmospheric CO2 concentration, a warmer climate, and increased soil nutrient availability. However, as plants age, progressive nutrient limitation is known to occur, especially in mature forests where soil nitrogen is deficient. Yet the long-term growth response of mature trees to rising CO2 accompanied by changing climate and nitrogen availability in semi-arid mountain regions is unclear. Here we used tree-ring widths and stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes to investigate the drivers of radial growth of mature Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) in the central Qilian Mountains, northwest China, from 1840 through 2019. Tree growth benefited from improved nitrogen availability, chiefly via changes in bioavailable nitrogen pools modified by a favorable climate during 1930–1964. Enhanced intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), driven by reduced stomatal conductance (gs) related to water deficit, lead to radial growth declines in 1985–2002. Recent acceleration of tree growth was largely attributed to a CO2 fertilization effect through enhanced iWUE during 2003–2019. Nitrogen availability was positively related to tree growth from the 1920s onward until greater CO2 fertilization ensued from 2000 onward. Hence, the negative effects of low nitrogen availability on growth could be mitigated or reversed by a high atmospheric CO2 concentration and warmer climate conditions. Our results suggest that mature spruce forests still harbor potential to increase ecosystem-level carbon sequestration and thereby partially mitigate climate warming. Such a nature-based solution in drought-prone forests would be achieved under warmer-wetter climate conditions in northwest China.

Calcareous dinoflagellate blooms during the Late Cretaceous 'greenhouse' world-a case study from western Ukraine.

The Late Cretaceous was a unique period in the history of the Earth characterized by elevated sea levels, reduced land area, and significantly high concentrations of atmospheric CO2 resulting in increased temperatures across the globe-a 'Greenhouse World'. During this period, calcareous dinoflagellate cysts (c-dinocysts) flourished and became a ubiquitous constituent of calcifying plankton around the world. An acme in calcareous dinocysts during the Albian to the Turonian coincided with the highest recorded seawater surface temperatures and was possibly linked to conditions that favored calcification and a highly oligotrophic system in European shelf seas. This study examines the potential applicability of c-dinocysts as a proxy for paleoenvironmental conditions based on their assemblage changes plotted against foraminiferal occurrences and microfacies analysis. The material was extracted from the upper Turonian chalk of the Dubivtsi region in western Ukraine. An inverse correlation was observed between species diversity and the number of c-dinocyst specimens. Nutrient availability gradients apparently determined important changes in the calcareous dinocysts distribution. These trophic changes were likely caused by the interplay of eustatic sea-level fluctuations and Subhercynian tectonic activity leading to changeable nutrient inputs from the nearby land.

Higher site productivity and stand age enhance forest susceptibility to drought-induced mortality

Warmer and drier conditions increase forest mortality worldwide. At the same time, nitrogen deposition, longer growing seasons and higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations may increase site productivity accelerating forest growth. However, tree physiological studies suggest that increased site productivity can also have adverse effects, reducing adaptation to drought. Understanding such intricate interactions that might foster tree mortality is essential for designing activities and policies aimed at preserving forests and the ecosystem services they provide. This study shows how site factors and stand features affect the susceptibility of Scots pine to drought-induced stand-level mortality. We use extensive forest data covering 750,000 ha, including 47,450 managed Scots pine stands, of which 2,547 were affected by mortality during the drought in 2015–2019. We found that the oldest and most dense stands growing on the most productive sites showed the highest susceptibility to enhanced mortality during drought. Our findings suggest that increasing site productivity may accelerate the intensity and prevalence of drought-induced forest mortality. Therefore, climate change may increase mortality, particularly in old and high-productive forests. Such exacerbated susceptibility to mortality should be considered in forest carbon sink projections, forest management, and policies designed to increase resilience and protect forest ecosystems.

Melatonin mediates elevated carbon dioxide-induced photosynthesis and thermotolerance in tomato.

Increasing carbon dioxide (CO2 ) promotes photosynthesis and mitigates heat stress-induced deleterious effects on plants, but the regulatory mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we found that tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants treated with high atmospheric CO2 concentrations (600, 800, and 1000 µmol mol-1 ) accumulated increased levels of melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxy tryptamine) in their leaves and this response is conserved across many plant species, including Arabidopsis, rice, wheat, mustard, cucumber, watermelon, melon, and hot pepper. Elevated CO2 (eCO2 ; 800 µmol mol-1 ) caused a 6.8-fold increase in leaf melatonin content, and eCO2 -induced melatonin biosynthesis preferentially occurred through chloroplast biosynthetic pathways in tomato plants. Crucially, manipulation of endogenous melatonin levels by genetic means affected the eCO2 -induced accumulation of sugar and starch in tomato leaves. Furthermore, net photosynthetic rate, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, and transcript levels of chloroplast- and nuclear-encoded photosynthetic genes, such as rbcL, rbcS, rbcA, psaD, petB, and atpA, significantly increased in COMT1 overexpressing (COMT1-OE) tomato plants, but not in melatonin-deficient comt1 mutants at eCO2 conditions. While eCO2 enhanced plant tolerance to heat stress (42°C) in wild-type and COMT1-OE, melatonin deficiency compromised eCO2 -induced thermotolerance in comt1 plants. The expression of heat shock proteins genes increased in COMT1-OE but not in comt1 plants in response to eCO2 under heat stress. Further analysis revealed that eCO2 -induced thermotolerance was closely linked to the melatonin-dependent regulation of reactive oxygen species, redox homeostasis, cellular protein protection, and phytohormone metabolism. This study unveiled a crucial mechanism of elevated CO2 -induced thermotolerance in which melatonin acts as an essential endogenous signaling molecule in tomato plants.

Distinct effects of Tibetan Plateau growth and global cooling on the eastern and central Asian climates during the Cenozoic

The evolution of the climate in eastern and central Asia during the Cenozoic was affected by regional paleogeographic developments and global climate change. Previous studies have mainly investigated the effects of Tibetan Plateau (TP) growth and global cooling for specific time periods. However, the respective contributions of these two factors over time are still poorly understood. In this study, we comprehensively compared the effects of TP growth and secular climate change by integrating existing paleobotanical records and model results across a total of 67 experiments. Our results demonstrate that the effects of TP growth and global cooling on the eastern and central Asian climates differed. During the early Eocene, high atmospheric CO2 concentrations contributed greatly to the relatively wet conditions in eastern and central Asia. Subsequent global cooling tended to cause long-term aridification in eastern Asia. By comparison, TP growth was the key factor for the increasing precipitation in eastern Asia and the decreasing precipitation in central Asia between the late Oligocene and the early Miocene. High atmospheric CO2 concentrations contributed to the increased wetness in eastern Asia in the geological past, and this fact has far-reaching implications for future wetter conditions in this region under anthropogenic forcing.

Continental weathering and recovery from ocean nutrient stress during the Early Triassic Biotic Crisis

Following the latest Permian extinction ∼252 million years ago, normal marine and terrestrial ecosystems did not recover for another 5-9 million years. The driver(s) for the Early Triassic biotic crisis, marked by high atmospheric CO2 concentration, extreme ocean warming, and marine anoxia, remains unclear. Here we constrain the timing of authigenic K-bearing mineral formation extracted from supergene weathering profiles of NW-Pangea by Argon geochronology, to demonstrate that an accelerated hydrological cycle causing intense chemical alteration of the continents occurred between ∼254 and 248 Ma, and continued throughout the Triassic period. We show that enhanced ocean nutrient supply from this intense continental weathering did not trigger increased ocean productivity during the Early Triassic biotic crisis, due to strong thermal ocean stratification off NW Pangea. Nitrogen isotope constraints suggest, instead, that full recovery from ocean nutrient stress, despite some brief amelioration ∼1.5 million years after the latest Permian extinction, did not commence until climate cooling revitalized the global upwelling systems and ocean mixing ∼10 million years after the mass extinction.

Simulation of Arctic sea ice within the DeepMIP Eocene ensemble: Thresholds, seasonality and factors controlling sea ice development

The early Eocene greenhouse climate maintained by high atmospheric CO2 concentrations serves as a testbed for future climate changes dominated by increasing CO2 forcing. In particular, the early Eocene Arctic region is important in the context of future CO2 driven climate warming in the northern polar region and associated shrinking Arctic sea ice. Here, we present early Eocene Arctic sea ice simulations carried out by six coupled climate models within the framework of the Deep-Time Model Intercomparison Project (DeepMIP). We find differences in sea ice responses to CO2 changes across the ensemble and compare the results with available proxy-based sea ice reconstructions from the Arctic Ocean. Most of the models simulate seasonal sea ice presence at high CO2 levels (≥ 840 ppmv = 3× pre-industrial (PI) level of 280 ppmv). However, the threshold when sea ice permanently disappears from the ocean varies considerably between the models (from <840 ppmv to >1680 ppmv). Based on a one-dimensional energy balance model analysis we find that the greenhouse effect likely caused by increased atmospheric water vapor concentration plays an important role in the inter-model spread in Arctic winter surface temperature changes in response to a CO2 rise from 1× to 3× the PI level. Furthermore, differences in simulated surface salinity in the Arctic Ocean play an important role in the control of local sea ice formation. These differences result from different implementations of river run-off between the models, but also from differences in the exchange of waters between a brackish Arctic and a more saline North Atlantic Ocean that are controlled by the width of the gateway between both basins. As there is no geological evidence for Arctic sea ice in the early Eocene, its presence in most of the simulations with 3× PI CO2 level indicates either a higher CO2 level and/or an overly weak polar sensitivity in these models.

Relict sand wedges suggest a high altitude and cold temperature during the Early Cretaceous in the Ordos Basin, North China

ABSTRACT The Cretaceous, with relatively high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, temperatures, and sea levels, is a typical greenhouse period in the geologic history of the Earth. Recently, gradual changes in the understanding of the Early Cretaceous climate have led to the proposal of small-scale polar glaciers or cooling events in polar regions. However, the cooling events in North China at mid-latitudes are still poorly understood. In this study, 48 wedge structures that are 35-240 cm wide and from 120 cm to more than 300 cm in depth down through the bottom of Lower Cretaceous Luohe Formation conglomerate and penetrated vertically downward into Jurassic Anding Formation mudstone in the Ordos Basin, North China. According to findings, these sand wedges are distinguished by large-scale V shapes, vertical to steeply dipping laminations and pebbles, aeolian abrasion of sand grains, ventifacts, upturned host strata, and other features that are most likely the source of thermal contraction cracking in periglacial desert region. The sand wedges formed when thermal contraction cracks were filled with wind-blown deposits and other material in dry, cold, and windy regions. This record may support the hypothesis that the Ordos Basin, western North China, may have been at a high altitude and was cold during the Early Cretaceous. During the Early Cretaceous, the complex topography and climate of North China allowed the Jehol Fauna to coexist with permafrost and glaciers.

Climate and ocean circulation in the aftermath of a Marinoan snowball Earth

Abstract. When a snowball Earth deglaciates through a very high atmospheric CO2 concentration, the resulting inflow of freshwater leads to a stably stratified ocean, and the strong greenhouse conditions drive the climate into a very warm state. Here, we use a coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model, applying different scenarios for the evolution of atmospheric CO2, to conduct the first simulation of the climate and the three-dimensional ocean circulation in the aftermath of the Marinoan snowball Earth. The simulations show that the strong freshwater stratification breaks up on a timescale of the order of 103 years, mostly independent of the applied CO2 scenario. This is driven by the upwelling of salty waters in high latitudes, mainly the Northern Hemisphere, where a strong circumpolar current dominates the circulation. In the warmest CO2 scenario, the simulated Marinoan supergreenhouse climate reaches a global mean surface temperature of about 30 ∘C under an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 15×103 parts per million by volume, which is a moderate temperature compared to previous estimates. Consequently, the thermal expansion of seawater causes a sea-level rise of only 8 m, with most of it occurring during the first 3000 years. Our results imply that the surface temperatures of that time were potentially not as threatening for early metazoa as previously assumed. Furthermore, the short destratification timescale found in this study implies that Marinoan cap dolostones accumulated during the deglacial period, given that they were deposited under the influence of a freshwater environment.

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals over bimetallic Pd-based nanostructures: Recent progress and emerging trends

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 to fuels and chemicals as a sustainable solution for waste transformation has garnered tremendous interest to combat the fervent issue of the prevailing high atmospheric CO2 concentration while contributing to the generation of sustainable energy. Monometallic palladium (Pd) has been shown promising in electrochemical CO2 reduction, producing formate or CO depending on applied potentials. Recently, bimetallic Pd-based materials strived to fine-tune the binding affinity of key intermediates is a prominent strategy for the desired product formation from CO2 reduction. Herein, the recent emerging trends on bimetallic Pd-based electrocatalysts are reviewed, including fundamentals of CO2 electroreduction and material engineering of bimetallic Pd-electrocatalysts categorized by primary products. Modern analytical techniques on these novel electrocatalysts are also thoroughly studied to get insights into reaction mechanisms. Lastly, we deliberate over the challenges and prospects for Pd-based catalysts for electrochemical CO2 conversion.

Late Cretaceous Paleoceanographic Evolution and the Onset of Cooling in the Santonian at Southern High Latitudes (IODP Site U1513, SE Indian Ocean).

The latest Cenomanian to Santonian sedimentary record recovered at IODP Expedition 369 Site U1513 in the Mentelle Basin (SE Indian Ocean, paleolatitude 60°S at 85 Ma) is studied to interpret the paleoceanographic evolution in the Southern Hemisphere. The planktonic foraminiferal assemblage changes, the depth ecology preferences of different species, and the surface and seafloor temperature inferred from the stable isotopic values measured on foraminiferal tests provide meaningful information to the understanding of the Late Cretaceous climate. The hothouse climate during the Turonian‐Santonian, characterized by weak latitudinal temperature gradients and high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, is followed by a progressive cooling during the Campanian. At Site U1513 the beginning of this climatic transition is nicely recorded within the Santonian, as indicated by an ∼1‰ increase in δ18O values of planktonic foraminifera suggesting a decline in surface water paleotemperatures of 4°C. The onset of cooling is mirrored by changes in the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages including extinctions among surface and deep dwellers, appearances and diversification of newly evolving taxa, and changes from predominantly epifaunal oxic to infaunal dysoxic/suboxic taxa among co‐occurring benthic foraminifera. Overall, the data presented here document an interval in the Santonian during which the rate of southern high latitude cooling increased. Both surface and bottom waters were affected, although the cooling signal is more evident in the data for surface waters. This pattern of cooling ascribes the deterioration of the Late Cretaceous climate to decreased CO2 in the atmosphere and changes in the oceanic circulation correlated with enhanced meridional circulation.

Composition of Organic Carbon-Based Compounds in the Stem Wood of Quercus mongolica Seedlings Grown Under Elevated CO2 and/or O3 Concentrations

In this study, we examined the composition of organic constituents of stem woody tissue together with tree growth in Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata Blume seedlings raised under controlled CO2 and/or O3 concentrations in a Free-Air Concentration Enrichment system. After exposure to ambient air (control), elevated CO2 concentration (550 μmol mol–1 CO2), elevated O3 concentration (double that of the control), and a combination of elevated CO2 and O3 concentrations during a growing season, we measured the diameter and length of stem, and biomass of sampled seedlings and quantified the lignin, extractive, and holocellulose contents of the woody tissue of current-year stems. We confirmed that the growth of seedlings was enhanced under an elevated CO2 concentration condition. In line with this, the extractive content was lower in woody tissue formed under an elevated CO2 concentration than that formed under ambient air, whereas holocellulose content showed an inverse pattern. Elevated O3 concentration itself did not change the organic constituents of the woody tissue, but it reduced the influence of an elevated CO2 concentration. We thus assume that Q. mongolica formed woody tissue with a low extractive content under the high CO2 concentration condition, although this response was possibly mitigated by an elevated O3 concentration. Extractives contains antimicrobial components such as tannins, flavonoids, quinones, and terpenoids. The decrease in extractives within the widely distributed Q. mongolica in East Asia may have a non-negligible impact on C cycling in the future earth with high atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Delayed Collapse of the North Pacific Intermediate Water After the Glacial Termination

AbstractCarbon release from the North Pacific in glacial‐interglacial cycles has been mainly linked to the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) formation and associated carbon/nutrient water upwelling and biological productivity changes. However, relationship between NPIW and atmospheric CO2 change in the early interglacial remains unclear. Here we report a high‐resolution sediment record of NPIW evolution based on paleo‐redox changes in the Western North Pacific during the last 400 ka. Our proxy and model results reveal a delayed collapse of NPIW after the glacial termination was coeval with decreased salinity of intermediate water and increased net rainfall in the North Pacific. Such weakened NPIW formation in the North Pacific probably make a contribution to maintain high atmospheric CO2 concentrations through weakened intermediate‐to‐deep ocean stratification and reduced subsurface biological pump net efficiency, countering the return to more stratified conditions in the Southern Ocean, which should drive down atmospheric CO2 during the early interglacial.

Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emissions in a Data-Scarce Region Using a Scenario-Based Modeling Approach: A Case Study in Southeastern USA

Climate change may impact agricultural greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and yields under higher temperatures, higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and variable precipitations. This calls for adaptation strategies to optimize agricultural productions with minimal GHGs. This study aimed to identify these optimum agricultural managements in response to current and projected climatic scenarios for the Choctawhatchee Basin in Southeastern USA, an experimentally unexplored data-scarce region lacking validation data. This scenario-based modeling study analyzed a total of 1344 scenarios consisting of four major crops, eight managements (varying tillage, manuring, and residue), and forty climatic combinations under current as wells as two representative concentration pathways with process-based Denitrification and Decomposition (DNDC) model. The results indicated that the region’s GHGs and yields were most affected by higher temperatures (≥+3 °C) and extreme precipitation changes (≥±40%), while high atmospheric CO2 concentrations exerted positive fertilization effects. The manure-related and higher residue incorporation scenarios were found to be better options in varying climates with minimal present global warming potentials (GWP) of 0.23 k to −29.1 k MT equivalent CO2. As such, the study presented climate change impacts and potential mitigation options in the study region while presenting a framework to design GHG mitigation in similar data-scarce regions.

Vulnerability of Temperate Fruit Production to Climate Change: Adaptation and Mitigation Measures: A Review

Climate change refers to a statistically significant variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, persisting for an extended period (typically decades or longer). As per United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), change of climate is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time period. The earth’s climate, although relatively stable over the past 10,000 years or so, has always been changing, mainly due to natural causes such as volcanic activity. However, since the second half of 20th century more rapid change has taken place, which has been attributed mainly due to human activities. Plausible climate change scenarios include higher temperatures, changes in precipitation, and higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Temperate region of the country, comprising mainly north-west and north east Himalayan region has witnesses a dramatic change in climate over the past 30 years, where adverse effect of climate change on temperate fruit production has been noticed. The carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulpherdioxide, etc. form greenhouse gas (GHG) pools in the atmosphere. Increase in the concentration of these gases is responsible for global climate change. According to Inter Governmental Panel on climate Change (IPCC), the climate is defined as the average weather, or more rigorously, as the statistical description of the weather in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over periods of several decades (typically three decades as defined by Meteorological Organization). These quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind, but in a wider sense the climate is the description of the state of the climate system. Global climate change and increasing climatic variability are recently considered a huge concern worldwide due to enormous emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and its more apparent effect on fruit crops because of its perennial nature. The changed climatic parameters affect the crop physiology, biochemistry, floral biology, biotic stresses like disease pest incidence, etc. and ultimately resulted to the reduction of yield and quality of fruit crops. So, it is big challenge to the scientists of the world. Mitigation is the most important measures to reduce the devastating effect of climate change.

Monitoring Australian Monsoon variability over the past four glacial cycles

We analyse changes in terrigenous sedimentation along the northwestern Australian margin to monitor the latitudinal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the shifting boundaries of climatic belts during the last four glacial cycles. We integrate high-resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning elemental records from Core SO257–18548 and International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1482, situated southwest of the Scott Plateau at the southern edge of the present-day monsoonal belt, and from Core SO257–18571, located within the dust-cyclone belt offshore Northwest Cape south of the Exmouth Plateau. The chronology of these sediment successions is based on 14C dating over the last glacial termination and on correlation of the benthic oxygen isotope record to the LR04 stack (Lisiecki and Raymo, 200) and Antarctic ice core chronology. Our XRF derived records of riverine terrigenous run-off and aeolian dust input reveal rapid intensification of monsoonal precipitation and reduction of atmospheric dust during the Younger Dryas and early Holocene as well as during the terminal phase of other major deglaciations. Short-lived monsoonal maxima in the early Holocene (~10 ka), MIS 5e (~130 ka), MIS 7 (~200, ~220 and ~ 240 ka), and MIS 9 (~280, ~305 and ~ 330 ka) coincide with maxima in atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane concentrations. Monsoon intensification occurs during maxima in Southern Hemisphere spring (September) insolation, when intense heat low pressure cells over the Pilbara region trigger the southward shift of the ITCZ. Within the dust-cyclone belt, riverine sediment discharge was restricted to intervals of high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, when sea surface temperature thresholds promoted cyclone formation in the tropical Indian Ocean. Northwestern Australia remained dry and arid during MIS 5a-d, when the ITCZ was locked in a more northerly position and temperature thresholds were not attained.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 modifies responses to water-stress and flowering of Mediterranean desert truffle mycorrhizal shrubs.

Predicted increases in atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) coupled with increased temperatures and drought are expected to strongly influence the development of most of the plant species in the world, especially in areas with high risk of desertification like the Mediterranean basin. Helianthemum almeriense is an ecologically important Mediterranean shrub with an added interest because it serves as the host for the Terfezia claveryi mycorrhizal fungus, which is a desert truffle with increasingly commercial interest. Although both plant and fungi are known to be well adapted to dry conditions, it is still uncertain how the increase in atmospheric CO2 will influence them. In this article we have addressed the physiological responses of H. almeriense × T. claveryi mycorrhizal plants to increases in atmospheric CO2 coupled with drought and high vapor pressure deficit. This work reports one of the few estimations of mesophyll conductance in a drought deciduous Mediterranean shrub and evaluates its role in photosynthesis limitation. High atmospheric CO2 concentrations help desert truffle mycorrhizal plants to cope with the adverse effects of progressive drought during Mediterranean springs by improving carbon net assimilation, intrinsic water use efficiency and dispersal of the species through increased flowering events.

Lessons from a high-CO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; world: an ocean view from ∼ 3 million years ago

Abstract. A range of future climate scenarios are projected for high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, given uncertainties over future human actions as well as potential environmental and climatic feedbacks. The geological record offers an opportunity to understand climate system response to a range of forcings and feedbacks which operate over multiple temporal and spatial scales. Here, we examine a single interglacial during the late Pliocene (KM5c, ca. 3.205±0.01 Ma) when atmospheric CO2 exceeded pre-industrial concentrations, but were similar to today and to the lowest emission scenarios for this century. As orbital forcing and continental configurations were almost identical to today, we are able to focus on equilibrium climate system response to modern and near-future CO2. Using proxy data from 32 sites, we demonstrate that global mean sea-surface temperatures were warmer than pre-industrial values, by ∼2.3 ∘C for the combined proxy data (foraminifera Mg∕Ca and alkenones), or by ∼3.2–3.4 ∘C (alkenones only). Compared to the pre-industrial period, reduced meridional gradients and enhanced warming in the North Atlantic are consistently reconstructed. There is broad agreement between data and models at the global scale, with regional differences reflecting ocean circulation and/or proxy signals. An uneven distribution of proxy data in time and space does, however, add uncertainty to our anomaly calculations. The reconstructed global mean sea-surface temperature anomaly for KM5c is warmer than all but three of the PlioMIP2 model outputs, and the reconstructed North Atlantic data tend to align with the warmest KM5c model values. Our results demonstrate that even under low-CO2 emission scenarios, surface ocean warming may be expected to exceed model projections and will be accentuated in the higher latitudes.

Effect of High Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentrations on the Serum Total Carbon Dioxide Measurement

Background: Serum total carbon dioxide (TCO₂) measurements are easily affected by numerous factors. Whether an irregularly high atmospheric CO₂ concentration affects the TCO₂ measurement remains unclear. Materials and Methods: In Somdech Phra Debaratana Medical Center laboratory (SDMC) and the main building laboratory (Building 1) located within Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, the repeated TCO₂ measurements using an enzymatic assay in three levels of human based control material were performed every two hours, over a one-day period. TCO₂ in a total of 150 patient sera were measured. Simultaneously, atmospheric CO₂ levels were determined. Results: Atmospheric CO₂ levels in SDMC and Building 1, ranged from 763 to 1,560 ppm and 602 to 787 ppm, respectively. Repeated TCO₂ measurements for SDMC, the measured TCO₂ concentrations of all control materials clearly increased between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with the peak at 2:00 p.m., which was related to an increase in the atmospheric CO₂ concentration. By contrast, in Building 1, the measurements were considerably stable. Moreover, considering patient data (n=12,042), the estimate median TCO₂ concentration in SDMC was likely to increase between 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as well. The association between the bias (y), difference TCO₂ concentration obtained between the SDMC and the Building 1, and the increasing atmospheric CO₂ (x) was y = 0.0038x – 0.016, R²=0.6813. Using regression equations, TCO₂ level increased by approximately 0.4 mmol/L for every 100 ppm of CO₂ increase in atmosphere. Conclusion: High atmospheric CO₂ concentrations can result in falsely high TCO₂ values, which may lead to markedly wrong interpretations, especially in patients with a tendency to have low TCO₂ concentrations.
