CIGESMED for divers: Establishing a citizen science initiative for the mapping and monitoring of coralligenous assemblages in the Mediterranean Sea.

BackgroundOver the last decade, inventorying and monitoring of marine biodiversity has significantly benefited from the active engagement of volunteers. Although several Citizen Science projects concern tropical reef ecosystems worldwide, none of the existing initiatives has yet specifically focused on their Mediterranean equivalents. Mediterranean coralline reefs, known as “coralligenous”, are bioherms primarily built by calcifying rhodophytes on hard substrates under dim-light conditions; they are considered hotspots of biodiversity and are extremely popular among divers due to their complex structure, conspicuous biological wealth and high aesthetic value. Nevertheless, data on their distribution, structure and conservation status is lacking for several Mediterranean areas while they are vulnerable to an increasing number of threats.New informationIn the framework of CIGESMED SeasEra (ERAnet) project a specialized Citizen Science project was launched, aiming to engage enthusiast divers in the study and monitoring of Mediterranean coralligenous assemblages through the gathering of basic information regarding their spatial occurrence, assemblage structure and associated pressures or threats. For its active implementation, a data collection protocol and a multilingual website were developed, comprising an educational module and a data submission platform. Georeferenced data reporting focuses on: (a) basic topographic and abiotic features for the preliminary description of each site, and the creation of data series for sites receiving multiple visits; (b) presence and relative abundance of typical conspicuous species, as well as (c) existence of pressures and imminent threats, for the characterization and assessment of coralligenous assemblages. A variety of tools is provided to facilitate end users, while divers have the choice to report additional information and are encouraged to upload their photographs. The long-term goal is the development of an active community of amateur observers providing widespread and ecologically significant data on coralligenous assemblages.

Cultural ecosystem services of mountain regions: Modelling the aesthetic value

Mountain regions meet an increasing demand for pleasant landscapes, offering many cultural ecosystem services to both their residents and tourists. As a result of global change, land managers and policy makers are faced with changes to this landscape and need efficient evaluation techniques to assess cultural ecosystem services. This study provides a spatially explicit modelling approach to estimating aesthetic landscape values by relating spatial landscape patterns to human perceptions via a photo-based survey. The respondents attributed higher aesthetic values to the Alpine landscape in respect to areas with settlements, infrastructure or intensive agricultural use. The aesthetic value of two study areas in the Central Alps (Stubai Valley, Austria and Vinschgau, Italy) was modelled for 10,215 viewpoints along hiking trails according to current land cover and a scenario considering the spontaneous reforestation of abandoned land. Viewpoints with high aesthetic values were mainly located at high altitude, allowing long vistas, and included views of lakes or glaciers, and the lowest values were for viewpoints close to streets and in narrow valleys with little view. The aesthetic values of the reforestation scenario decreased mainly at higher altitudes, but the whole area was affected, reducing aesthetic value by almost 10% in Stubai Valley and 15% in Vinschgau. Our proposed modelling approach allows the estimation of aesthetic values in spatial and qualitative terms for most viewpoints in the European Alps. The resulting maps can be used as information and the basis for discussion by stakeholders, to support the decision-making process and landscape planning. This paper also discusses the role of mountain farming in preserving an attractive landscape and related cultural values.

Genetic variability and diversity of the main resources of lily assessed via phenotypic characters, pollen morphology, and ISSR markers.

Lily (Lilium spp), which belongs to Lilium, is one kind of monocotyledon. As a perennial ornamental plant with extremely high esthetic, edible, and medicinal value, lily has gained much favor due to its mostly showy flowers of various colors and elegant shape. In this research, we studied experimental materials in a sample of 49 individuals including 40 cultivars, nine species of wild lily, and their variants. The collection of 40 cultivars covered all six hybrids in the genus, i.e., Asiatic hybrids, Oriental hybrids, Longiflorum hybrids, LA hybrids, LO hybrids, and OT hybrids. Genetic diversity and inter-relationships were assessed through analysis of phenotypic characteristics, pollen morphology, and ISSR molecular markers. Quantitative characters were selected to analyze phenotypic variation, with results indicating greater variability in petiole length as compared to other characters. Pollen morphological observations suggested that the largest variation coefficient between all hybrids and wild species was the lumina. ISSR makers demonstrated that both cultivars and wild species possess a high level of genetic diversity. Specifically, the genetic diversity of wild lily was higher than cultivars.

Trinexapac-ethyl modifies plant architecture of ornamental pepper

Summary Compact and well branched ornamental peppers are commercially preferred. Plant growth regulators (PGR) and pinching, removal of shoot apices, are used to create ornamentals with high aesthetic value. Trinexapac-ethyl (TE) is a foliarly absorbed plant growth regulator (PGR) and belongs to acylcyclohexadione chemical family that inhibits gibberellic acid biosynthesis. The objective of this study was to investigate possibility of using TE as a PGR in ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) production to suppress vertical growth and/or substitute for pinching to produce more compact and quality plants. The 0, 2, 4, 8, and 12 ppm TE was foliarly applied onto either pinched or non-pinched plants. Pinching and TE reduced the canopy height up to 25% and 38%, respectively. TE along with pinching reduced Height/ Diameter (H/D) ratio from 2.3 down to 1.5, a more commercially desired compactness. TE increased the chlorophyll content and total fruit number. TE may substitute costly pinching treatment for growth control. The absence of phytotoxicity and improved production may justify recommendation of TE for commercial ornamental pepper production.

Esthetic Outcomes of Immediately Loaded Locking Taper Implants in the Anterior Maxilla: A Case Series Study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the esthetic outcome of single-tooth locking taper connection implants placed in the anterior maxilla following a postextractive nonfunctional loading protocol. This preliminary clinical study involving 16 patients evaluated the results of 21 implants placed in areas with high esthetic value. For each implant the pink esthetic score, white esthetic score, cumulative survival rate, and health status of peri-implant tissues were evaluated. The cumulative survival rate was 100% 2 years after prosthetic loading, and the mean total pink esthetic score/white esthetic score was 16.9 ± 1.14 on a maximum value of 20. There was excellent plaque control in all patients, and inflammation indices were within the norm. Within the limits of this study, this immediate nonfunctional loading protocol seems to be a successful procedure esthetically and for the maintenance of peri-implant soft tissues.

Adherence of Granite Plates by Mortar Adhesion: Influence of Temperature

The objective of this work was to study the effect of temperature variation on the adherence of granite plates fixed with adhesive mortars on external flooring and exterior cladding. The rock selected was a commercially well accepted syenogranite, known as Vermelho Capao Bonito, which has excellent technological qualities and high aesthetic value. Tensile bond strength and pullout tests were performed according to the techniques proposed for ceramic materials, in view of the lack of standards for dimension stones. The test specimens were set on standard substrates with two types of mortars, one commercially manufactured by a leader company and the other developed in laboratory. After normal curing conditions (28 days at 23°C and relative humidity of 65%), the adhesion tests were performed at the following temperatures: 23oC, 30°C, 40°C, 50°C and 60°C. With increasing temperature the results indicated a decrease in adhesion values of 48% to 42%, from 2.04 to 1.13 MPa for the one developed in the laboratory and from 1.92 to 1.12 MPa for the commercial mortar. The behavior of the microstructure on the standard substrate-mortar-rock interfaces were also investigated by optical microscopy, and no signs of reaction or penetration of mortars into the rock (anchoring) were observed. With regard to the adhesion values, temperature variation was an important factor to its decrease, offering important perspectives for new experiments with other types of granites, for studies of displacements and pathologies commonly observed in external cladding made with plates of these materials.

Traditional Phytotheraphic Record of Orchids of Odisha and their Conservation Strategies

Odisha being the coastal state of Indian sub-continent records a rich medicinal plant diversity in general and orchids in particular. Since time immemorial, these important plant resources remains in a neglected state leading to an alarming situation in near future. Virgin forests of Odisha spreading in areas like Gandhmardan Hills, Niyamgiri Hills, Deomali Hills, Mahendragiri Hills and Similipal Biosphere Reserve hoards rich orchid diversity enduring luxuriant growth. Out of 137 species of Orchids recorded so far, Similipal area alone harbours about 94 orchid species possessing high aesthetic and medicinal value. Unfortunately, the medicinal importance of orchids of this region has drawn least attention from both the scientific fraternity as well as general populace compared to their role in horticulture field. Orchid species of Odisha like Acampe carinata (Griff.) Panigr., A. praemorsa (Roxb.) Blatt. & McCann, Geodorum recurvum (Roxb.) Alston, Habenaria marginata Coleb., Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Bl. and Vanda testacea (Lindl.) Rchb.f. are used to cure rheumatism, arthritis, dysentery, asthma and snake bite etc. However, the medicinal potentialities of these orchids are not so well exploited though they possess immense curative values. Further, as the forests of Odisha are experiencing various anthropogenic as well as abiotic pressures, many of the orchid populations are fast shrinking leading to their mass depletion. Realizing this, the current communication highlights the importance of 26 medicinal orchids very often used by the tribal populace of Odisha to get relief from various ailments. Concurrently, some major conservational strategies have also been projected.

Cold flow defects in zinc die casting: prevention criteria using simulation and experimental investigations

High-pressure die casting of zinc alloys is increasingly used in the manufacturing of parts with high aesthetic value. These parts must comply with strict requirements on surface quality, which are generally overlooked in traditional mechanical applications. Cold flow defects, which are a primary concern for surface quality, originate from several different causes that have not yet been fully understood. This report investigates the factors that influence cold flow defects and the choices that can lead to an improvement in surface quality. The research method is based on a case study performed at a die casting company. First, an existing process has been analyzed using simulation to explain the causes of cold flow defects observed in production samples. The temperature at the end of the cavity fill has emerged as a key index for the occurrence of defects, which can be controlled by three primary process parameters: injection velocity, temperature of the cooling medium, and lubricant spraying time. These same factors are then assessed using experimental tests on an existing die, where the number of defects in the selected regions of the casting has been evaluated by image processing. The results suggest that the surface quality can be particularly improved by increasing the flow rate of the molten metal through the gates and avoiding excessive flow turbulence in the wide cavity sections. Consequently, the increase in the gate area has been identified as a specific criterion for the die design. These findings have been validated in the redesign of the die and the selection of the process parameters, which have resulted in a significant reduction in the surface defects.

The study aims to use economic raw materials in designing wedding dresses and exploiting the capabilities of these materials in designing and producing economic wedding dresses of high aesthetic value, exploiting and highlighting the plastic capabilities of "Tyvek" material in designing wedding dresses, and forming a new technical vision to use unconventional materials in preparing dresses wedding. The study includes the use of different techniques for tyvek material in preparing five designs for wedding dresses and evaluating these techniques from multiple axes by a jury consisting of ten specialized academics and analyzing these results statistically. The research follows the descriptive approach in the theoretical part, while the experimental approach follows the practical experience, The quantitative approach to statistical treatment. The study concluded that tyvek is a material rich in formative capabilities and with characteristics that allow the creation of techniques and treatments of its own that give unique results and the use of tyvek in its raw form does not give good results, due to its strong susceptibility to crunching and its lack of response to ironing, so it can not be used in clothing only after His treatment with any of the known or developed techniques, and the results of the application of the questionnaires for specialists showed an increase in the percentage of their degree of acceptance, and the proposed designs that got the lowest percentages got high degrees with regard to the suitability of the material and the attractiveness of the technology developed, which indicates the success of the idea of ​​using the material and the success of Its innovative technologies.

Two-dimensional physical habitat modeling of effects of habitat structures on urban stream restoration

River corridors, even if highly modified or degraded, still provide important habitats for numerous biological species, and carry high aesthetic and economic values. One of the keys to urban stream restoration is recovery and maintenance of ecological flows sufficient to sustain aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the Hongje Stream in the Seoul metropolitan area of Korea was selected for evaluating a physically-based habitat with and without habitat structures. The potential value of the aquatic habitat was evaluated by a weighted usable area (WUA) using River2D, a two-dimensional hydraulic model. The habitat suitability for Zacco platypus in the Hongje Stream was simulated with and without habitat structures. The computed WUA values for the boulder, spur dike, and riffle increased by about 2%, 7%, and 131%, respectively, after their construction. Also, the three habitat structures, especially the riffle, can contribute to increasing hydraulic heterogeneity and enhancing habitat diversity.

Through understanding this, issues and factors affecting concrete shells can be tackled and designed out in reviving this type of structures because they can be efficient in structural performance, economical in cost and provide high aesthetic value. This paper discusses concrete shells as an architectural solution by asking the question to what constituted their popularity and factors that led to their demise in the modern age of technological advancement, construction process and environmental concerns. This paper presents a cultural perspective and an overview of seminal, historical and contemporary concrete shells so as to bring about a renaissance of such structures in our built environment once again because of all the benefits it can offer.

The Bulgarian Composer Pancho Vladigerov - Psychological Origin of His Creative Personality

Pancho Vladigerov (1899-1978) is one of the most prominent Bulgarian composers. He has created 70 opuses of works with high aesthetic value and in a very extended range of genres. His works are performed all over the world, and every Bulgarian pianist has experienced his piano opuses. In the present study, I reveal the psychological prerequisites for his creative personality in the following order: typological characterization - evidence to classify the composer in a certain type, derived from his everyday life, from his performer's and pedagogical work and backed up by statements of his relatives, students and critics - the influence of the stated typological characterization on his artistic handwriting.

Catharanthus roseus (L.) known as Madagascar periwinkle (MP) is a legendary medicinal plant mostly because of possessing two invaluable antitumor terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAs), vincristine and vinblastine. The plant has also high aesthetic value as an evergreen ornamental that yields prolific blooms of splendid colors. The plant possesses yet another unique characteristic as an amiable experimental host for the maintenance of the smallest bacteria found on earth, the phytoplasmas and spiroplasmas, and serves as a model for their study. Botanical information with respect to synonyms, vernacular names, cultivars, floral morphology, and reproduction adds to understanding of the plant while the geography and ecology of periwinkle illustrate the organism's ubiquity. Good agronomic practices ensure generous propagation of healthy plants that serve as a source of bioactive compounds and multitudinous horticultural applications. The correlation between genetic diversity, variants, and TIA production exists. MP is afflicted with a whole range of diseases that have to be properly managed. The ethnobotanical significance of MP is exemplified by its international usage as a traditional remedy for abundant ailments and not only for cancer. TIAs are present only in micro quantities in the plant and are highly poisonous per se rendering a challenge for researchers to increase yield and reduce toxicity.

Listening to sad music in adverse situations: How music selection strategies relate to self-regulatory goals, listening effects, and mood enhancement

Adults’ ( N = 220) reported motivations for listening to sad music after experiencing adverse negative circumstances were examined by exploring how their music selection strategies related to (a) their self-regulatory goals, and (b) reported effects of listening. The effects of music selection strategies, self-regulatory goals, and reported effects on the achievement of mood enhancement were also explored using a retrospective survey design. The findings indicate that music choice is linked to the individual’s identified self-regulatory goals for music listening and to expected effects. Additionally, the results show that if individuals had intended to achieve mood enhancement through music listening, this was often achieved by first experiencing cognitive reappraisal or distraction. The selection of music with perceived high aesthetic value was the only music selection strategy that directly predicted mood enhancement. Where respondents indicated that they chose music with the intention of triggering memories, this was negatively related to the self-regulatory goal of mood enhancement.

Graffiti can be seen as a specific means of communication used by young people in urban environments. Graffiti are a very heterogeneous phenomenon, certain aspects of which border on art, while others remain in the domain of vandalism. Considering the absence of graffiti related research in our country, this study is exploratory and has two main goals - to assess the perception of Belgrade citizens on the prevalence of diverse types of stylized and non-stylized graffiti in different urban locations and to determine the participants' relationship towards graffiti, and their subtypes, as well as the appropriateness of a number of locations for creating graffiti. A convenient sample of 100 citizens of Belgrade has completed an on-line extensive questionnaire. The results indicate that non-stylized graffiti are perceived as more prevalent than stylized graffiti, while the relationship towards stylized graffiti is significantly more favourable. This finding could be explained by the greater amount of effort invested in stylized graffiti which leads to their higher aesthetic value. Certain public spaces - such as surrounding walls / fences, underpasses, overpasses and bridges - which are perceived as most covered in graffiti are at the same time seen as most appropriate for this type of activity.
