Ecological and climatic transferability of airborne lidar-driven aboveground biomass models in Piñon-Juniper woodlands

ABSTRACT Piñon-juniper (PJ) woodlands are an expansive and dynamic dryland ecosystem in the US that encompass a wide range of spatial, temporal, and ecological diversity. The dynamism of PJ woodland extent and abundance over space and time is attributable to variability in species compositions, stand structures, climatic conditions, and disturbance patterns. PJ aboveground biomass (AGB) quantification is important for understanding its role in the global carbon cycle, for tracking climate change impacts, and for informing forest management practices. Quantifying AGB in PJ woodlands is challenging due to complex vegetation structure. Although airborne laser scanning (ALS) has proven effective in estimating PJ AGB in local scale studies, these efforts only capture a fraction of the overall PJ range leaving open an important question as to whether a broad-scale, ecosystem-wide effort to map PJ woodland AGB could be successful. This research seeks to determine whether AGB predictive models built in ecologically distinct portions of PJ’s range can be accurately applied to prediction of AGB in other portions of the range. Using a large database of 497 field plots compiled from eight sources and a random forest modeling framework, transferability between predictive models was evaluated by grouping field reference plots into two clustering categories based on PJ characteristics: one category generated with environmental variables (climate and topography) and the other using species compositions. For both clustering categories, models trained on one cluster were used to predict AGB in every other cluster within that category. Relatively distinct clusters, such as those characterized by notably higher temperatures and precipitation totals or dominated by a unique species, had high transferability when models were trained on the distinct cluster and applied to other clusters, but low transferability when other clusters were tested on the distinct cluster. High training transferability for distinct clusters is likely due to the inability of random forests to extrapolate beyond the range of training data, while the high testing transferability is likely due to ecological reasons. Therefore, it is important to capture the distinct environments and species compositions within the range of PJ woodlands when training a range-wide model to map PJ AGB. With the eventual goal of a range-wide PJ AGB map, we developed a preliminary range-wide model of PJ woodland AGB using our entire field reference dataset. The bootstrapped accuracy assessment of the range wide model (median R2 = 0.52; median rRMSE = 0.49) suggests promise for future comprehensive PJ AGB maps. However, high AGB values in the range-wide model were under-predicted, suggesting that gathering additional field plots in high AGB PJ woodlands has the potential to enhance the accuracy of the predictive model across the range of PJ AGB.

Aboveground Biomass Inversion Based on Object-Oriented Classification and Pearson–mRMR–Machine Learning Model

Cities play a crucial role in the carbon cycle. Measuring urban aboveground biomass (AGB) is essential for evaluating carbon sequestration. Satellite remote sensing enables large-scale AGB inversion. However, the apparent differences between forest and grassland biomass pose a significant challenge to the accurate estimation of urban AGB using satellite-based data. To address this limitation, this study proposed a novel AGB estimation method using the eastern part of the Zhahe mining area in Huaibei City as the study area, which integrates land cover classification, feature selection, and machine learning modelling to generate high quality biomass maps of different vegetation types in an urban area with complex feature distribution. Utilizing the GEE platform and Sentinel-2 image, we developed an object-oriented machine learning classification algorithm, combining SNIC and GLCM to extract vegetation information. Optimal feature variables for forest and crop-grass AGB inversion were selected using the Pearson–mRMR algorithm. Finally, we constructed nine machine learning models for AGB inversion and selected the model with the highest accuracy to generate the AGB map of the study area. The results of the study are as follows: (1) Compared with the pixel-based classification method, the object-oriented classification method can extract the boundaries of different vegetation types more accurately. (2) Forest AGB is strongly correlated with vegetation indices and physiological parameters, while agri-grass AGB is primarily associated with vegetation indices and vegetation physiological parameters. (3) For forest AGB modelling, the RF-R model outperforms other machine learning models with an R2 of 0.77. For agri-grass AGB modelling, the XGBoost-R model is more accurate, with an R2 of 0.86. (4) The mean forest AGB in the study area was 4.60 kg/m2, while the mean agri-grass AGB was 0.71 kg/m2. High AGB values were predominantly observed in forested areas, which were mainly distributed along roads, waterways, and mountain ranges. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the health of local urban ecosystems and provides valuable insights for ecosystem protection and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Mapping the Spatial Distribution of Aboveground Biomass in China’s Subtropical Forests Based on UAV LiDAR Data

Accurately estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for assessing carbon storage in forest ecosystems. However, traditional field survey methods are time-consuming, and vegetation indices based on optical remote sensing are prone to saturation effects, potentially underestimating AGB in subtropical forests. To overcome these limitations, we propose an improved approach that combines three-dimensional (3D) forest structure data collected using unmanned aerial vehicle light detection and ranging (UAV LiDAR) technology with ground measurements to apply a binary allometric growth equation for estimating and mapping the spatial distribution of AGB in subtropical forests of China. Additionally, we analyze the influence of terrain factors such as elevation and slope on the distribution of forest biomass. Our results demonstrate a high accuracy in estimating tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH) using LiDAR data, with an R2 of 0.89 for tree height and 0.92 for DBH. In the study area, AGB ranges from 0.22 to 755.19 t/ha, with an average of 121.28 t/ha. High AGB values are mainly distributed in the western and central-southern parts of the study area, while low AGB values are concentrated in the northern and northeastern regions. Furthermore, we observe that AGB in the study area exhibits an increasing trend with altitude, reaching its peak at approximately 1650 m, followed by a gradual decline with further increase in altitude. Forest AGB gradually increases with slope, reaching its peak near 30°. However, AGB decreases within the 30–80° range as the slope increases. This study confirms the effectiveness of using UAV LiDAR for estimating and mapping the spatial distribution of AGB in complex terrains. This method can be widely applied in productivity, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity studies of subtropical forests.

Modeling forest above-ground biomass using freely available satellite and multisource datasets

Achieving the 2 °C global warming target will require all stakeholders, from local to global, to accelerate carbon reduction plans. To properly estimate carbon amounts sequestered and stored by forests, these stakeholders need accurate maps of forest above-ground biomass (AGB). However, AGB maps are developed solely by researchers using methodologies that are typically difficult for non-researchers to understand. To ensure that non-researchers can prepare such maps, freely available open-source datasets are needed along with a simple AGB estimation method. Remote sensing data have become widely used, and some satellite images are provided as open-source data. However, few AGB estimation studies have relied exclusively on freely available datasets. This study, therefore, examined the capability of using open-source satellite and multisource datasets to estimate AGB for two contrasting test sites in Hokkaido, Japan, and for the two sites combined (the unified sites). Test site 1 contained three forest types on a hilly terrain, while test site 2 contained one dominant forest type on a flat terrain. The datasets used were L-band backscatter, a canopy height model, slope, aspect, annual mean temperature, annual precipitation, and forest type. Three machine-learning algorithms and one parametric algorithm were compared. The results showed that the machine-learning models outperformed the parametric model in all instances, reproducing low and high AGB values properly with reduced saturation issues. A variable importance analysis revealed that in the best-performing machine-learning models, forest type and annual precipitation were the two most important variables for test site 1 and the unified sites, and another climatic factor, annual mean temperature, rose in rank for the unified sites. These variables had relatively large intra-variability and inter-variability in common, both of which appear to have offered advantages in modeling AGB for the sites where AGB variability was large. In contrast, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-based variables (the backscatter and the canopy height model) ranked lower in relative importance. This may reflect the negative influence of hilly terrain of test site 1 (and the unified sites) on the precision of SAR-based datasets. For test site 2, with its flat terrain, these SAR-based variables were the two dominant variables. Our results show the promise of freely available satellite and multisource datasets for modeling AGB and the important roles that non-SAR-based variables may play in large-scale AGB mapping that includes varied terrain.

Multi-dimensional variables and feature parameter selection for aboveground biomass estimation of potato based on UAV multispectral imagery.

Aboveground biomass (AGB) is an essential assessment of plant development and guiding agricultural production management in the field. Therefore, efficient and accurate access to crop AGB information can provide a timely and precise yield estimation, which is strong evidence for securing food supply and trade. In this study, the spectral, texture, geometric, and frequency-domain variables were extracted through multispectral imagery of drones, and each variable importance for different dimensional parameter combinations was computed by three feature parameter selection methods. The selected variables from the different combinations were used to perform potato AGB estimation. The results showed that compared with no feature parameter selection, the accuracy and robustness of the AGB prediction models were significantly improved after parameter selection. The random forest based on out-of-bag (RF-OOB) method was proved to be the most effective feature selection method, and in combination with RF regression, the coefficient of determination (R2) of the AGB validation model could reach 0.90, with root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and normalized RMSE (nRMSE) of 71.68 g/m2, 51.27 g/m2, and 11.56%, respectively. Meanwhile, the regression models of the RF-OOB method provided a good solution to the problem that high AGB values were underestimated with the variables of four dimensions. Moreover, the precision of AGB estimates was improved as the dimensionality of parameters increased. This present work can contribute to a rapid, efficient, and non-destructive means of obtaining AGB information for crops as well as provide technical support for high-throughput plant phenotypes screening.

Remote-sensing estimation of potato above-ground biomass based on spectral and spatial features extracted from high-definition digital camera images

Above-ground biomass (AGB) is a significant phenotypic index for evaluating photosynthesis capacity, healthy growth, and estimating crop yield. Accurately monitoring the AGB helps improve agricultural fertilization management and optimize planting patterns. Numerous studies have confirmed that canopy spectrum saturation causes optical vegetation indices (VIs) to underestimate the AGB of crops at multiple growth periods. To solve this problem, the present research used a remote sensing method to obtain RGB images of potato tuber formation-, tuber growth-, and starch accumulation- periods by a high-definition digital camera sensor on the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). From the ultrahigh spatial resolution RGB images, we then extracted RGB-VIs, textures (based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix, GLCM), and crop height (Hdsm) and analyzed the correlation between the three image features and the potato AGB for single and multiple growth periods. Finally, we estimated potato AGB at multiple growth periods based on (1) RGB-VIs, (2) RGB-VIs + GLCM-based textures, (3) RGB-VIs + Hdsm, and (4) RGB-VIs + GLCM-based textures + Hdsm by applying multiple stepwise regression (MSR) and extreme learning machine (ELM). The results showed that (i) unlike the texture features of wheat and maize that increased with growth period, the texture features and crop height of the potato canopy both increased first and then decreased with the growth period. (ii) The potato AGB was poorly estimated when using RGB-VIs, CLCM-based textures, or Hdsm individually; (iii) combining GLCM-based textures, Hdsm, and RGB-VIs solved the problem of underestimating the high AGB values of potato samples by the RGB-VIs model alone. Therefore, combining GLCM-based textures, Hdsm, and RGB-VIs obtained from UAV digital images could enhance the accuracy of potato AGB estimation under high coverage.

Aboveground biomass estimation of black locust planted forests with aspect variable using machine learning regression algorithms

An accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is important for carbon accounting and afforestation policy making, and the aspect factors that affect forest stand growth are important to the accuracy of AGB estimation. In this study, aspect was incorporated as a variable into three machine learning algorithms (MLAs) (support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF)), to estimate the AGB of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) planted forests in 96 field plots with four different aspects (sunny slope, semi-sunny slope, semi-shady slope and shady slope). The results showed that in the models incorporating aspect variables, the increase in accuracy varied from 36.72% to 41.23% for 29 validation plots based on R2. The A-RF model (RF with aspect variable), which had the highest R2 (0.8519) and lowest RMSE and rRMSE (12.552 Mg/ha and 0.175) was considered optimal for AGB estimation of black locust planted forests. The overestimation of sunny and shady slopes, and the underestimation of semi-sunny and semi-shady slopes are reduced by incorporating the aspect variable. Areas with lower AGB values mainly occur on sunny and shady slopes, and areas with higher AGB values mainly occur on semi-sunny and semi-shady slopes. Overall, our study demonstrates that the introduction of the aspect variable provided the model with a basis for the effects of different growth conditions of black locust planted forests on different aspects, which can improve the accuracy of AGB estimation.

Integration of high-resolution optical and SAR satellite remote sensing datasets for aboveground biomass estimation in subtropical pine forest, Pakistan.

In this study, we investigate stand-alone and combined Pleiades high-resolution passive optical and ALOS PALSAR active Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation in subtropical mountainous Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii) forest in Murree Forest Division, Punjab, Pakistan. Spectral vegetation indices (NDVI, SAVI, etc.) and sigma nought HV-polarization backscatter dB values are derived from processing optical and SAR datasets, respectively, and modeled against field-measured AGB values through various regression models (linear, nonlinear, multi-linear). For combination of multiple spectral indices, NDVI, TNDVI, and MSAVI2 performed the best with model R2/RMSE values of 0.86/47.3 tons/ha. AGB modeling with SAR sigma nought dB values gives low model R2 value of 0.39. The multi-linear combination of SAR sigma nought dB values with spectral indices exhibits more variability as compared with the combined spectral indices model. The Leave-One-Out-Cross-Validation (LOOCV) results follow closely the behavior of the model statistics. SAR data reaches AGB saturation at around 120-140 tons/ha, with the region of high sensitivity around 50-130 tons/ha; the SAR-derived AGB results show clear underestimation at higher AGB values. The models involving only spectral indices underestimate AGB at low values (< 60 tons/ha). This study presents biomass estimation maps of the Chir Pine forest in the study area and also the suitability of optical and SAR satellite imagery for estimating various biomass ranges. The results of this work can be utilized towards environmental monitoring and policy-level applications, including forest ecosystem management, environmental impact assessment, and performance-based REDD+ payment distribution.

Improving aboveground biomass maps of tropical dry forests by integrating LiDAR, ALOS PALSAR, climate and field data

BackgroundReliable information about the spatial distribution of aboveground biomass (AGB) in tropical forests is fundamental for climate change mitigation and for maintaining carbon stocks. Recent AGB maps at continental and national scales have shown large uncertainties, particularly in tropical areas with high AGB values. Errors in AGB maps are linked to the quality of plot data used to calibrate remote sensing products, and the ability of radar data to map high AGB forest. Here we suggest an approach to improve the accuracy of AGB maps and test this approach with a case study of the tropical forests of the Yucatan peninsula, where the accuracy of AGB mapping is lower than other forest types in Mexico. To reduce the errors in field data, National Forest Inventory (NFI) plots were corrected to consider small trees. Temporal differences between NFI plots and imagery acquisition were addressed by considering biomass changes over time. To overcome issues related to saturation of radar backscatter, we incorporate radar texture metrics and climate data to improve the accuracy of AGB maps. Finally, we increased the number of sampling plots using biomass estimates derived from LiDAR data to assess if increasing sample size could improve the accuracy of AGB estimates.ResultsCorrecting NFI plot data for both small trees and temporal differences between field and remotely sensed measurements reduced the relative error of biomass estimates by 12.2%. Using a machine learning algorithm, Random Forest, with corrected field plot data, backscatter and surface texture from the L-band synthetic aperture radar (PALSAR) installed on the on the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-1 (ALOS), and climatic water deficit data improved the accuracy of the maps obtained in this study as compared to previous studies (R2 = 0.44 vs R2 = 0.32). However, using sample plots derived from LiDAR data to increase sample size did not improve accuracy of AGB maps (R2 = 0.26).ConclusionsThis study reveals that the suggested approach has the potential to improve AGB maps of tropical dry forests and shows predictors of AGB that should be considered in future studies. Our results highlight the importance of using ecological knowledge to correct errors associated with both the plot-level biomass estimates and the mismatch between field and remotely sensed data.

Improving Aboveground Biomass Estimation of Pinus densata Forests in Yunnan Using Landsat 8 Imagery by Incorporating Age Dummy Variable and Method Comparison

Optical remote sensing data have been widely used for estimating forest aboveground biomass (AGB). However, the use of optical images is often restricted by the saturation of spectral reflectance for forests that have multilayered and complex canopy structures and high AGB values and by the effect of spectral reflectance from underlayer shrub, grass, and bare soil for young stands. This usually leads to overestimations and underestimations for smaller and larger values, respectively, and makes it very challenging to improve the estimation accuracy of forest AGB. In this study, a novel methodology was proposed by incorporating stand age as a dummy variable into four models to improve the estimation accuracy of the Pinus densata forest AGB in Yunnan of Southwestern China. A total of eight models, including two parametric models (LM: linear regression model and LMC: LM with combined variables), two nonparametric models (RF: random forest and ANN: artificial neural network) without the age dummy variable, and four corresponding models with the age dummy variable (DLM, DLMC, DRF, and DANN), were compared to estimate AGB. Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images and 147 sample plots were acquired and utilized. The results showed that (1) compared with the two parametric models, the two nonparametric algorithms resulted in significantly greater estimation accuracies of Pinus densata forest AGB, and the increases of accuracy varied from 8% to 32% for 100 modeling plots and from 12% to 35% for 47 test plots based on root mean square error (RMSE); (2) compared with the models without the age dummy variable, the models with the age dummy variable greatly reduced the overestimations for the plots with AGB values smaller than 70 Mg/ha and the underestimations for the plots with AGB values larger than 180 Mg/ha and, thus, significantly improved the overall estimation accuracy by 14% to 42% for the modeling plots and by 32% to 44% for the test plots based on RMSE; and (3) the texture measures derived from the Landsat 8 OLI images contributed more to improving the estimation accuracy than the original spectral bands and other transformations. This implied that two nonparametric models, coupled with the use of the age dummy variable and texture measures, offered a great potential for improving the estimation accuracy of Pinus densata forest AGB.

Determinants of Above-Ground Biomass and Its Spatial Variability in a Temperate Forest Managed for Timber Production

The proper estimation of above-ground biomass (AGB) stocks of managed forests is a prerequisite to quantifying their role in climate change mitigation. The aim of this study was to analyze the spatial variability of AGB and its uncertainty between actively managed pine and unmanaged pine-oak reference forests in central Mexico. To investigate the determinants of AGB, we analyzed variables related to forest management, stand structure, topography, and climate. We developed linear (LM), generalized additive (GAM), and Random Forest (RF) empirical models to derive spatially explicit estimates and their uncertainty, and compared them. AGB was strongly influenced by forest management, as LiDAR-derived stand structure and stand age explained 80.9% to 89.8% of its spatial variability. The spatial heterogeneity of AGB varied positively with stand structural complexity and age in the managed forests. The type of predictive model had an impact on estimates of total AGB in our study site, which varied by as much as 19%. AGB densities varied from 0 to 492 ± 17 Mg ha−1 and the highest values were predicted by GAM. Uncertainty was not spatially homogeneously distributed and was higher with higher AGB values. Spatially explicit AGB estimates and their association with management and other variables in the study site can assist forest managers in planning thinning and harvesting schedules that would maximize carbon stocks on the landscape while continuing to provide timber and other ecosystem services. Our study represents an advancement toward the development of efficient strategies to spatially estimate AGB stocks and their uncertainty, as the GAM approach was used for the first time with improved results for such a purpose.

Estimation of forest aboveground biomass and uncertainties by integration of field measurements, airborne LiDAR, and SAR and optical satellite data in Mexico

BackgroundInformation on the spatial distribution of aboveground biomass (AGB) over large areas is needed for understanding and managing processes involved in the carbon cycle and supporting international policies for climate change mitigation and adaption. Furthermore, these products provide important baseline data for the development of sustainable management strategies to local stakeholders. The use of remote sensing data can provide spatially explicit information of AGB from local to global scales. In this study, we mapped national Mexican forest AGB using satellite remote sensing data and a machine learning approach. We modelled AGB using two scenarios: (1) extensive national forest inventory (NFI), and (2) airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) as reference data. Finally, we propagated uncertainties from field measurements to LiDAR-derived AGB and to the national wall-to-wall forest AGB map.ResultsThe estimated AGB maps (NFI- and LiDAR-calibrated) showed similar goodness-of-fit statistics (R2, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)) at three different scales compared to the independent validation data set. We observed different spatial patterns of AGB in tropical dense forests, where no or limited number of NFI data were available, with higher AGB values in the LiDAR-calibrated map. We estimated much higher uncertainties in the AGB maps based on two-stage up-scaling method (i.e., from field measurements to LiDAR and from LiDAR-based estimates to satellite imagery) compared to the traditional field to satellite up-scaling. By removing LiDAR-based AGB pixels with high uncertainties, it was possible to estimate national forest AGB with similar uncertainties as calibrated with NFI data only.ConclusionsSince LiDAR data can be acquired much faster and for much larger areas compared to field inventory data, LiDAR is attractive for repetitive large scale AGB mapping. In this study, we showed that two-stage up-scaling methods for AGB estimation over large areas need to be analyzed and validated with great care. The uncertainties in the LiDAR-estimated AGB propagate further in the wall-to-wall map and can be up to 150%. Thus, when a two-stage up-scaling method is applied, it is crucial to characterize the uncertainties at all stages in order to generate robust results. Considering the findings mentioned above LiDAR can be used as an extension to NFI for example for areas that are difficult or not possible to access.

Inverting Aboveground Biomass–Canopy Texture Relationships in a Landscape of Forest Mosaic in the Western Ghats of India Using Very High Resolution Cartosat Imagery

Large scale assessment of aboveground biomass (AGB) in tropical forests is often limited by the saturation of remote sensing signals at high AGB values. Fourier Transform Textural Ordination (FOTO) performs well in quantifying canopy texture from very high-resolution (VHR) imagery, from which stand structure parameters can be retrieved with no saturation effect for AGB values up to 650 Mg·ha−1. The method is robust when tested on wet evergreen forests but is more demanding when applied across different forest types characterized by varying structures and allometries. The present study focuses on a gradient of forest types ranging from dry deciduous to wet evergreen forests in the Western Ghats (WG) of India, where we applied FOTO to Cartosat-1a images with 2.5 m resolution. Based on 21 1-ha ground control forest plots, we calibrated independent texture–AGB models for the dry and wet zone forests in the area, as delineated from the distribution of NDVI values computed from LISS-4 multispectral images. This stratification largely improved the relationship between texture-derived and field-derived AGB estimates, which exhibited a R2 of 0.82 for a mean rRMSE of ca. 17%. By inverting the texture–AGB models, we finally mapped AGB predictions at 1.6-ha resolution over a heterogeneous landscape of ca. 1500 km2 in the WG, with a mean relative per-pixel propagated error &lt;20% for wet zone forests, i.e., below the recommended IPCC criteria for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) methods. The method proved to perform well in predicting high-resolution AGB values over heterogeneous tropical landscape encompassing diversified forest types, and thus presents a promising option for affordable regional monitoring systems of greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions related to forest degradation.

Interest of Integrating Spaceborne LiDAR Data to Improve the Estimation of Biomass in High Biomass Forested Areas

Mapping forest AGB (Above Ground Biomass) is of crucial importance to estimate the carbon emissions associated with tropical deforestation. This study proposes a method to overcome the saturation at high AGB values of existing AGB map (Vieilledent’s AGB map) by using a map of correction factors generated from GLAS (Geoscience Laser Altimeter System) spaceborne LiDAR data. The Vieilledent’s AGB map of Madagascar was established using optical images, with parameters calculated from the SRTM Digital Elevation Model, climatic variables, and field inventories. In the present study, first, GLAS LiDAR data were used to obtain a spatially distributed (GLAS footprints geolocation) estimation of AGB (GLAS AGB) covering Madagascar forested areas, with a density of 0.52 footprint/km2. Second, the difference between the AGB from the Vieilledent’s AGB map and GLAS AGB at each GLAS footprint location was calculated, and additional spatially distributed correction factors were obtained. Third, an ordinary kriging interpolation was thus performed by taking into account the spatial structure of these additional correction factors to provide a continuous correction factor map. Finally, the existing and the correction factor maps were summed to improve the Vieilledent’s AGB map. The results showed that the integration of GLAS data improves the precision of Vieilledent’s AGB map by approximately 7 t/ha. By integrating GLAS data, the RMSE on AGB estimates decreases from 81 t/ha (R2 = 0.62) to 74.1 t/ha (R2 = 0.71). Most importantly, we showed that this approach using LiDAR data avoids underestimating high biomass values (new maximum AGB of 650 t/ha compared to 550 t/ha with the first approach).

Aboveground biomass mapping in French Guiana by combining remote sensing, forest inventories and environmental data

Mapping forest aboveground biomass (AGB) has become an important task, particularly for the reporting of carbon stocks and changes. AGB can be mapped using synthetic aperture radar data (SAR) or passive optical data. However, these data are insensitive to high AGB levels (>150Mg/ha, and >300Mg/ha for P-band), which are commonly found in tropical forests. Studies have mapped the rough variations in AGB by combining optical and environmental data at regional and global scales. Nevertheless, these maps cannot represent local variations in AGB in tropical forests. In this paper, we hypothesize that the problem of misrepresenting local variations in AGB and AGB estimation with good precision occurs because of both methodological limits (signal saturation or dilution bias) and a lack of adequate calibration data in this range of AGB values. We test this hypothesis by developing a calibrated regression model to predict variations in high AGB values (mean >300Mg/ha) in French Guiana by a methodological approach for spatial extrapolation with data from the optical geoscience laser altimeter system (GLAS), forest inventories, radar, optics, and environmental variables for spatial inter- and extrapolation. Given their higher point count, GLAS data allow a wider coverage of AGB values. We find that the metrics from GLAS footprints are correlated with field AGB estimations (R2=0.54, RMSE=48.3Mg/ha) with no bias for high values. First, predictive models, including remote-sensing, environmental variables and spatial correlation functions, allow us to obtain “wall-to-wall” AGB maps over French Guiana with an RMSE for the in situ AGB estimates of ∼50Mg/ha and R2=0.66 at a 1-km grid size. We conclude that a calibrated regression model based on GLAS with dependent environmental data can produce good AGB predictions even for high AGB values if the calibration data fit the AGB range. We also demonstrate that small temporal and spatial mismatches between field data and GLAS footprints are not a problem for regional and global calibrated regression models because field data aim to predict large and deep tendencies in AGB variations from environmental gradients and do not aim to represent high but stochastic and temporally limited variations from forest dynamics. Thus, we advocate including a greater variety of data, even if less precise and shifted, to better represent high AGB values in global models and to improve the fitting of these models for high values.

L-Band SAR Backscatter Related to Forest Cover, Height and Aboveground Biomass at Multiple Spatial Scales across Denmark

Mapping forest aboveground biomass (AGB) using satellite data is an important task, particularly for reporting of carbon stocks and changes under climate change legislation. It is known that AGB can be mapped using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), but relationships between AGB and radar backscatter may be confounded by variations in biophysical forest structure (density, height or cover fraction) and differences in the resolution of satellite and ground data. Here, we attempt to quantify the effect of these factors by relating L-band ALOS PALSAR HV backscatter and unique country-wide LiDAR-derived maps of vegetation penetrability, height and AGB over Denmark at different spatial scales (50 m to 500 m). Trends in the relations indicate that, first, AGB retrieval accuracy from SAR improves most in mapping at 100-m scale instead of 50 m, and improvements are negligible beyond 250 m. Relative errors (bias and root mean squared error) decrease particularly for high AGB values (\(&gt;\)110 Mg ha\(^{-1}\)) at coarse scales, and hence, coarse-scale mapping (\(\ge\)150 m) may be most suited for areas with high AGB. Second, SAR backscatter and a LiDAR-derived measure of fractional forest cover were found to have a strong linear relation (R\(^2\) = 0.79 at 250-m scale). In areas of high fractional forest cover, there is a slight decline in backscatter as AGB increases, indicating signal attenuation. The two results demonstrate that accounting for spatial scale and variations in forest structure, such as cover fraction, will greatly benefit establishing adequate plot-sizes for SAR calibration and the accuracy of derived AGB maps.

Contribución de los bosques tropicales de montaña en el almacenamiento de carbono en Colombia

The tropical montane forests in the Colombian Andean region are located above 1500 m, and have been heavily deforested. Despite the general presumption that productivity and hence carbon stocks in these ecosystems are low, studies in this regard are scarce. This study aimed to (i) to estimate Above Ground Biomass (AGB) in forests located in the South of the Colombian Andean region, (ii) to identify the carbon storage potential of tropical montane forests dominated by the black oak Colombobalanus excelsa and to identify the relationship between AGB and altitude, and (iii) to analyze the role of tropical mountain forests in conservation mechanisms such as Payment for Environmental Services (PES) and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+). Twenty six 0.25 ha plots were randomly distributed in the forests and all trees with D > or =10 cm were measured. The results provided important elements for understanding the role of tropical montane forests as carbon sinks. The information produced can be used in subnational initiatives, which seek to mitigate or reduce the effects of deforestation through management or conservation of these ecosystems, like REDD+ or PES. The AGB and carbon stocks results obtained were similar to those reported for lowland tropical forests. These could be explained by the dominance and abundance of C. excelsa, which accounted for over 81% of AGB/carbon. The error associated with the estimates of AGB/carbon was 10.58%. We found a negative and significant relationship between AGB and altitude, but the higher AGB values were in middle altitudes (approximatly = 700-1800 m), where the environmental conditions could be favorable to their growth. The carbon storage potential of these forests was higher. However, if the historical rate of the deforestation in the study area continues, the gross emissions of CO2e to the atmosphere could turn these forests in to an important emissions source. Nowadays, it is clear that tropical montane forests are vulnerable to deforestation, especially black Oak forests due to their commercial value. Given their high carbon storage potential, the presence of endemic species and the strategic functions of these ecosystems, we recommend that they should be considered relevant during REDD+, PES or any other conservation assessment.

Biomass estimation of mixed forest landscape using a Fourier transform texture-based approach on very-high-resolution optical satellite imagery

Assessment of forest structure parameters via remote-sensing data offers the opportunity to examine stand parameters and to detect degradation and forest dynamics, such as above-ground biomass (AGB), at the landscape scale. While much attention has focused on spectrum-based and radar backscatter approaches for assessing forest biomass, texture-based approaches show strong promise. This work makes use of the novel Fourier transform textural ordination (FOTO) method, which involves the combination of 2D fast Fourier transform (FFT) and ordination through principal component analysis (PCA) for characterizing the structural and textural properties of vegetation. This technique presents the potential of Fourier transform approaches in estimating the different forest types, their stand structure, and biomass dynamics in the context of an oil palm–tropical forest landscape in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The method was applied to the recordings of very-high-resolution (VHR) Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT) imagery of the study area. The technique proved useful in distinguishing between the forest types and developing individual biomass estimate models for various forest types. Results show that the FOTO method is able correctly to resolve high AGB values of various forest types. These findings are in agreement with the results based on ground measurements.

Propagating uncertainty to estimates of above-ground biomass for Kenyan mangroves: A scaling procedure from tree to landscape level

Mangroves are globally important carbon stores and as such have potential for inclusion in future forest-based climate change mitigation strategies such as Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+). Participation in REDD+will require developing countries to produce robust estimates of forest above-ground biomass (AGB) accompanied by an appropriate measure of uncertainty. Final estimates of AGB should account for known sources of uncertainty (measurement and predictive) particularly when estimating AGB at large spatial scales. In this study, mixed-effects models were used to account for variability in the allometric relationship of Kenyan mangroves due to species and site effects. A generic biomass equation for Kenyan mangroves was produced in addition to a set of species-site specific equations. The generic equation has potential for broad application as it can be used to predict the AGB of new trees where there is no pre-existing knowledge of the specific species-site allometric relationship: the most commonly encountered scenario in practical biomass studies. Predictions of AGB using the mixed-effects model showed good correspondence with the original observed values of AGB although displayed a poorer fit at higher AGB values, suggesting caution in extrapolation. A strong relationship was found between the observed and predicted values of AGB using an independent validation dataset from the Zambezi Delta, Mozambique (R2=0.96, p= <0.001). The simulation based approach to uncertainty propagation employed in the current study produced estimates of AGB at different spatial scales (tree – landscape level) accompanied by a realistic measure of the total uncertainty. Estimates of mangrove AGB in Kenya are presented at the plot, regional and landscape level accompanied by 95% prediction intervals. The 95% prediction intervals for landscape level estimates of total AGB stocks suggest that between 5.4 and 7.2 megatonnes of AGB is currently held in Kenyan mangrove forests.

Estimating aboveground biomass in Mu Us Sandy Land using Landsat spectral derived vegetation indices over the past 30 years

Remote sensing is a valuable and effective tool for monitoring and estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) in large areas. The current international research on biomass estimation by remote sensing technique mainly focused on forests, grasslands and crops, with relatively few applications for desert ecosystems. In this paper, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images from 1988 to 2007 and the data of 283 AGB samples in August 2007 were used to estimate the AGB for Mu Us Sandy Land over the past 30 years. Moreover, temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of AGB and influencing factors of climate and underlying surface were also studied. Results show that: (1) Differences of correlations exist in the fitted equations between AGB and different vegetation indices in desert areas. The modified soil adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI) and soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) show relatively higher correlations with AGB, while the correlation between normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and AGB is relatively lower. Error testing shows that the AGB-MSAVI model established can be used to accurately estimate AGB of Mu Us Sandy Land in August. (2) AGB in Mu Us Sandy Land shows the fluctuant characteristics over the past 30 years, which decreased from the 1980s to the 1990s, and increased from the 1990s to 2007. AGB in 2007 had the highest value, with a total AGB of 3.352×106 t. Moreover, in the 1990s, AGB had the lowest value with a total AGB of 2.328×106 t. (3) AGB with relatively higher values was mainly located in the middle and southern parts of Mu Us Sandy Land in the 1980s. AGB was low in the whole area in the1990s, and relatively higher AGB values were mainly located in the southern parts of Uxin. In 2007, AGB in the whole area was relatively higher than those of the last twenty years, and higher AGB values were mainly located in the northern, western and middle parts of Mu Us Sandy Land.
