Simultaneous high-resolution whole-brain MR spectroscopy and [18F]FDG PET for temporal lobe epilepsy.

Precise lateralizing the epileptogenic zone in patients with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) remains challenging, particularly when routine MRI scans are inconclusive (MRI-negative). This study aimed to investigate the synergy of fast, high-resolution, whole-brain MRSI in conjunction with simultaneous [18F]FDG PET for the lateralization of mTLE. Forty-eight drug-resistant mTLE patients (M/F 31/17, age 12-58) underwent MRSI and [18F]FDG PET on a hybrid PET/MR scanner. Lateralization of mTLE was evaluated by visual inspection and statistical classifiers of metabolic mappings against routine MRI. Additionally, this study explored how disease status influences the associations between altered N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) and FDG uptake using hierarchical moderated multiple regression. The high-resolution whole-brain MRSI data offers metabolite maps at comparable resolution to [18F]FDG PET. Visual examinations of combined MRSI and [18F]FDG PET showed an mTLE lateralization accuracy rate of 91.7% in a 48-patient cohort, surpassing routine MRI (52.1%). Notably, out of 23 MRI-negative mTLE, combined MRSI and [18F]FDG PET helped detect 19 cases. Logistical regression models combining hippocampal NAA level and FDG uptake improved lateralization performance (AUC=0.856), while further incorporating extrahippocampal regions such as amygdala, thalamus, and superior temporal gyrus increased the AUC to 0.939. Concurrent MRSI/PET revealed a moderating influence of disease duration and hippocampal atrophy on the association between hippocampal NAA and glucose uptake, providing significant new insights into the disease's trajectory. This paper reports the first metabolic imaging study using simultaneous high-resolution MRSI and [18F]FDG PET, which help visualize MRI-unidentifiable lesions and may thus advance diagnostic tools and management strategies for drug-resistant mTLE.

The Interplay Between Workplace Incivility, Religiosity and Well-Being: Insights from Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

Drawing on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory, this study examines the relationship between workplace incivility and workers' psychological well-being. A related aim is to examine the link between workers' religiosity and their well-being, with workplace incivility moderating this nexus. Data were collected from 247 employees identified from private sectors (in Jordan and the UAE) via online-survey questionnaire. Factor analysis and hierarchical moderated multiple regression models were used to test the hypotheses. Study results show that workers' religiosity is positively and significantly associated with their psychological well-being, while workplace incivility is negatively (but insignificantly) associated with workers' psychological well-being. In addition, and contrary to our expectations and prior studies, our results suggest that workplace incivility strengthens the direct relationship between religiosity and well-being. The mechanism of this intersection may propose that rude and uncivil treatments positively predict self-blame, something that may lead the targets to become more religious to get recovery from different types of incivility and stressful life events. This study highlights the contextual applicability and possible extension of the JD-R theory through extending its model to religiosity and well-being of employees in a diverse cultural context in the Middle East.

Thriving on Job Demands? Exploring Associations between Goal Uncertainty, Anxiety, and Job Autonomy for Employees with Metabolic Syndrome

Anxiety disorders are among the most common distressing diseases worldwide and have been the focus of increasing attention by companies, as they are associated with impaired work performance, higher absenteeism, and greater health-related costs. The risk of disease is particularly pronounced in individuals with metabolic syndrome and unfavorable working conditions. Nevertheless, empirical knowledge on interactions of metabolic syndrome, job characteristics, and psychiatric morbidity is still sparse. This cross-sectional study included survey data from 176 company employees with diagnosed metabolic syndrome to examine associations between anxiety and job-related factors, namely goal uncertainty and job autonomy. Descriptive data analysis along with Spearman’s rank correlation analysis were performed. Study hypotheses were tested using moderated hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results extend worksite health promotion literature by demonstrating a slightly U-shaped relation between goal uncertainty and anxiety (β=.16, p≤.05). While moderate levels of goal uncertainty contributed to well-being in terms of low anxiety severity, low and high goal uncertainty were associated with more severe anxiety. This highlights the need to consider differentiated stressor conceptualizations in research on antecedents of employees’ well-being. However, job autonomy showed neither a direct nor a moderating effect on anxiety.

Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors and Psychological Distress: A Secondary Analysis across Four Occupational Populations.

This study assessed the associations of employee’s perceptions of family-supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB) and their psychological distress across four occupational populations (n = 3778): Information technology; healthcare; military-connected Veterans; and National Guard service members. Data were gathered and analyzed from four larger archival datasets to compare differences in these relationships. Results revealed significant negative relationships between employee reports of FSSB and their psychological distress within occupations, as expected. Furthermore, results revealed significant differences across occupational populations for employee reports of both FSSB and psychological distress. Hierarchical moderated multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the extent of these mean differences across groups. Results revealed significant differences among these four groups such that the military-connected Veteran employees demonstrated significantly stronger associations of FSSB, and psychological distress compared to the other three occupations of information technology, healthcare, and National Guard service members. These findings suggest the importance of FSSB to worker psychological health across a variety of occupational populations, specifically noting the importance and presence of FSSB for Veteran employees’ psychological distress in civilian workplaces. Practical implications include the need for training leaders on how to better support employees’ work and non-work lives, mental health, and well-being.

Decoupling of regional neural activity and inter-regional functional connectivity in Alzheimer’s disease: a simultaneous PET/MR study

PurposeAlzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are characterized by both aberrant regional neural activity and disrupted inter-regional functional connectivity (FC). However, the effect of AD/MCI on the coupling between regional neural activity (measured by regional fluorodeoxyglucose imaging (rFDG)) and inter-regional FC (measured by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI)) is poorly understood.MethodsWe scanned 19 patients with MCI, 33 patients with AD, and 26 healthy individuals by simultaneous FDG-PET/rs-fMRI and assessed rFDG and inter-regional FC metrics (i.e., clustering coefficient and degree centrality). Next, we examined the potential moderating effect of disease status (MCI or AD) on the link between rFDG and inter-regional FC metrics using hierarchical moderated multiple regression analysis. We also tested this effect by considering interaction between disease status and inter-regional FC metrics, as well as interaction between disease status and rFDG.ResultsOur findings revealed that both rFDG and inter-regional FC metrics were disrupted in MCI and AD. Moreover, AD altered the relationship between rFDG and inter-regional FC metrics. In particular, we found that AD moderated the effect of inter-regional FC metrics of the caudate, parahippocampal gyrus, angular gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, frontal pole, inferior temporal gyrus, middle frontal, lateral occipital, supramarginal gyrus, precuneus, and thalamus on predicting their rFDG. On the other hand, AD moderated the effect of rFDG of the parietal operculum on predicting its inter-regional FC metric.ConclusionOur findings demonstrated that AD decoupled the link between regional neural activity and functional segregation and global connectivity across particular brain regions.

Socioscientific Issues Thinking and Action in the Midst of Science-in-the-Making.

Like all SSI, the COVID-19 pandemic requires decisions that are contentious, involve scientific thinking, and vary across social groups. This investigation determined how perceptions about COVID-19 science and sociocultural membership associate with 557 university biology students’: (1) COVID-19 behaviors after stay-at-home orders and (2) support for future societal COVID-19 responses. Hierarchical moderated multiple regression analyses demonstrate that students’ COVID-19 mitigating actions after stay-at-home orders were significantly and positively associated with, in order of importance: (1) higher levels of COVID-19 spread prevention knowledge; (2) espousing more liberal, as opposed to conservative, political orientations; (3) being female; and (4) increased disbelief of COVID-19 misinformation/disinformation claims. Furthermore, the students’ political orientation moderated the relationship between their trust in scientific models to guide COVID-19 decisions and their personal COVID-19 actions, with trust in scientific models to guide COVID-19 decision-making being a significant positive predictor of moderate, conservative, and very conservative student groups’ COVID-19 mitigating actions. Conversely, there was no association between trust in scientific models to guide COVID-19 decision-making and very liberal and liberal students’ conducting COVID-19 actions. Hierarchical moderated multiple regression analyses revealed that students’ support for societal-wide COVID-19 mitigating measures going forward is positively associated with, in order of importance: (1) espousing more liberal, as opposed to conservative, political orientations; (2) higher levels of COVID-19 spread prevention knowledge; (3) increased disbelief of COVID-19 misinformation/disinformation claims; (4) trust in scientific models for guiding COVID-19 decision-making; and (5) beliefs that factors beyond science and technology (e.g., personal actions) are necessary for pandemic resolution. Implications discussed include the importance for helping students analyze how sociocultural membership, personal biases, and trust in science interactively influence socioscientific decision-making. Further recommendations discussed include how science communication strategies must account for sociocultural variance in order to optimize trust in science and reasoned and responsible action.

No Benefits for Paradox Personalities? Narcissism and Humility in New Work Careers

Remarkable contributions have already been made to narcissism and its particular influence on career success, yet the literature to date does not capture the potential impact of paradoxical personalities, especially when considering the role of humility as a complement to a multifaceted constellation of characters. This gap finds additional relevance in light of recent changes in today’s world of work in terms of flexibility and complexity. Therefore, our study examines the relationship between narcissism and humility with objective and subjective career success in new work settings. The research is based on dyadic data from 398 cross-industry U.S. professionals in 199 pairs. Hypotheses are tested using hierarchical moderated multiple and logistic regression analyses. As expected, the interaction between narcissism and humility showed negative effects on a leadership position, project responsibility, and salary. Considering new ways of working in a three-way interaction with narcissism and humility, the effect turned positive for salary. Thus, in the new world of work, the humble narcissist is successful in material terms. Surprisingly, no relations to subjective career success were evident. Our findings contribute to the literature on new ways of working, career success, and paradox personalities by showing that although humble narcissists may generally experience lower levels of career success, they rather succeed in new working environments.

Effect of Gender Diversity on the Association between Corporate Sustainability Practices and Financial Performance of Firms

Purpose: The objective of this research is to examine the effect of corporate sustainability practices (CSP) on financial performance (FP) as well as the moderating effect of gender diversity (GENDIV) in the board on the relationship between CSP and FP of firms in Malaysia.
 Methods: The sample of the study is 312 firm-year observations from 2015 to 2017 of 104 firms listed in Bursa Malaysia. The theoretical framework of the study is underpinned by the Stakeholder theory and the Agency theory. To test the hypotheses, with the help of STATA software, the panel corrected standard errors (PCSE) estimator model and the hierarchical moderated multiple regression model have been used.
 Results: The findings of the study reveal that CSP significantly and positively affects the FP of firms. The empirical results also show that gender diversity in boards significantly moderates the relationship between CSP and FP of Firms in Malaysia.
 Implications: Based on the empirical findings, the study recommends that the policymakers and regulatory bodies should follow up the mandatory corporate sustainability practices of the firms as well as revise the codes of corporate governance regarding gender diversity of the boards to ensure their long-term sustainability as well as to reduce the risk of financial distress, or bankruptcies in the future.

Technological innovation promoters, service quality practices and performance of SACCOs in Kenya

The programmed co-operative enterprises’ innovation initiatives in Kenya have been below their expectations of customers. The majority (60%) of the customers are satisfied by banking and related financial services offered by co-operative enterprises in Kenya. This is below the expectations of what the customers perceive and what is realized at the point of service delivery. This study sought to provide insights into the relationship between technological innovation promoters and performance by empirically testing the direct effect of technological innovation promoters on performance and exploring the moderation effects of service quality practices. The study is anchored on the promoter theory and collective entrepreneurship concept. The study used a self-administered questionnaire to Chief Executive Officers of 158 Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies (SACCOs). Data were analyzed by employing Statistical Software for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22 and structural equation modeling using AMOS version 25. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling and hierarchical moderated multiple regression (MMR). Overall, the study found out that, technological innovation promoters have a positive influence on the performance of SACCOs in Kenya, and service quality practices (R2 change) is 0.153. This implied that the moderating effect of service quality practices gained 15.3% variance in the SACCOs above and beyond the variance by technological innovation promoters and performance. This study concludes that an integrative model comprising of technological innovation promoters, service quality practices and performance is a sure way of enhancing collective entrepreneurship and recommends that SACCO management together with their partners should deliberately nurture a customer relationship management culture that will enable them to realize positive performance that has been influenced by service quality practices

Religious beliefs as a moderator of the relationships between workplace incivility and counterproductive work behaviours

BACKGROUND: The current work describes the relationship between workplace incivility and counterproductive work behaviours as moderated by religious-inspired ethics. Drawing from conservation of resources theory, we consider workplace incivility a type of workplace stressor draining the cognitive and psychological resources of employees that make them effective and productive. We posit that individuals’ religious beliefs and work ethics based on these beliefs provide resources to employees to counter, balance, or offset the loss of productive psychological resources. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the buffering effects of Islamic work ethics on the relationship between workplace incivility and counterproductive work behaviours. METHODS: The sample includes 251 employees working in the healthcare sector in Pakistan. Hierarchical moderated multiple regression analysis was used to explore the relationships between workplace incivility, counterproductive work behaviours and Islamic work ethics. RESULTS: Our study results show that workplace incivility positively covaries with counterproductive work behaviours. However, Islamic work ethics negatively moderate this relationship. CONCLUSION: Theoretically, this study contributes by examining religious beliefs (Islamic work ethics) as a key resource that moderates the relationship between workplace incivility and counterproductive work behaviours. Furthermore, evidence regarding the different impacts of incivility on CWB-I and CWB-O in the Pakistani context agrees with the existing literature.

Moderating Effect of Insulin Resistance on the Relationship between Gray Matter Volumes and Cognitive Function.

Background: It is controversial whether exposure to insulin resistance accelerates cognitive deterioration. The present study aimed to investigate the association between insulin resistance and gray matter volume loss to predict the cognitive decline. Methods: We recruited 160 participants (78 with Alzheimer’s disease and 82 without Alzheimer’s disease). Insulin resistance, regional gray matter volume, and cognitive function were assessed. A hierarchical moderated multiple regression (MMR) model was used to determine any associations among insulin resistance, structural changes in the brain, and cognitive decline. Results: The volumes of 7 regions in the gray matter were negatively related to insulin resistance in Alzheimer’s disease (p =0.032). Hierarchical MMR analysis indicated that insulin resistance did not directly affect the cognitive decline but moderated the cognitive decline through the decrease in gray matter volume in the key brain regions, i.e., inferior orbitofrontal gyrus (left), middle cingulate gyrus (right), hippocampus (right), and precuneus (right) (p < 0.05 in each case). Conclusion: Insulin resistance appears to exacerbate the cognitive decline associated with several gray matter volume loss.

Influence of Alternative Financing on the Relationship between Firm Size and Efficiency of Small and Medium Enterprises in Kenya

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Globally, small and medium-size enterprises(SMEs) hold great economic growth potential, however their mortality rate is high, due to lack of credit. The SMEs mortality rate in Kenya is 90% by the second year. Scholarly endeavors to explore the influence of alternative finance (AF) on operational characteristics - efficiency nexus have received little attention, more so for SMEs who have unique financial needs. Although AF appears to be the preferred mode of financing and maintaining start-ups, its impact on the survival, growth and success of manufacturing SMEs is not well documented in Kenya. This study focused on establishing the influence of alternative financing on the relationship between firm-size and efficiency of SMEs in Kenya. The study used a cross-sectional research design. The target population was SMEs registered with Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM). The accessible population was 136 SMEs owner/managers. The study used a self-administered semi structured questionnaire to collect primary and secondary data. Data envelopment analysis was used to measure efficiency of SMEs, multiple regression modeling to analyze relationships and hierarchical moderated multiple regression analysis was used to assess the influence of the moderator. The findings revealed that firm-size positively (β = 0.214, t-value =4.983, P&amp;lt;0.05.) influences efficiency and that alternative finance does moderate (R-Square change 11.1 %) firm size relationships with efficiency. The study recommends that owner/managers of manufacturing SMEs in Kenya should give attention to opportunities for sustainable increase in firm size to improve their efficiency.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

The findings of this study demonstrate that managerial competency positively influences efficiency (β = 0.150, t-value =10.246, P&amp;lt;0.05), and that alternative finance does moderate managerial competency relationships with efficiency (R-Square change of 21.7%).We suggest trainings for manufacturing SME owners/managers in Kenya on the pivotal role of alternative finance to facilitate SMEs achieve higher efficiencies and accelerate economic growth.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Predicting Basic Military Performance for Conscripts in the Norwegian Armed Forces

The Norwegian Armed Forces have made major changes to the enlistment and selection system for conscripts in recent years. In this article, the predictive validity of various selection criteria for military performance is examined. The sample consisted of 3,276 conscripts, of whom 18% were female. The predictors in the analysis were general mental ability, self-perceived physical fitness, social and life skills, self-perceived military fit, tested physical fitness and officer-rated suitability. Military performance was assessed by an officer toward the end of the basic 1-year military service. Bivariate correlations between the predictors and military performance were studied for men and women separately. The best predictors were tested physical fitness for men and officer-rated suitability for women. A stepwise hierarchical moderated multiple regression analysis was conducted. A small but significant part of the variance was explained by the model. Both self-reported variables and other predictors made a small, but significant contribution to improving the model. The results indicated that the 2-step selection process was valid for predicting military performance for both men and women.

The Predictive and Incremental Validity of Psychological Empowerment Dimensions on Teachers′ Career Commitment beyond Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness

AbstractThis study examined the predictive and additive effects of psychological empowerment dimensions on teachers′ career commitment over and above the satisfaction of basic work needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness. Two hundred and twelve teachers, selected through a stratified random sampling technique took part in the survey. The Career Commitment Measure, Basic Needs Satisfaction at Work Scale, and Psychological Empowerment Instrument were used to collect data which were analyzed using Moderated Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis. Findings indicated that psychological needs satisfaction had predictive effect on teachers′ career commitment (R2= .233; p &lt; .001). Psychological empowerment had both predictive and incremental effects on teachers′ career commitment (R2= .286; ΔR2= .053; p &lt; .001), accounting for a significant add-on effect of 5.3 percent of the variance in teachers′ career commitment over the effect of autonomy, competence and relatedness. Empowering teachers psychologically has both predictive and add-on effects on teachers′ career commitment beyond the contribution of autonomy, competence and relatedness. Recommendations were made for research and practice.

Test Anxiety and Academic Performance among Undergraduates: The Moderating Role of Achievement Motivation.

This study investigated the moderating role of achievement motivation in the relationship between test anxiety and academic performance. Three hundred and ninety three participants (192 males and 201 females) selected from a public university in Ondo State, Nigeria using a purposive sampling technique, participated in the study. They responded to measures of test anxiety and achievement motivation. Three hypotheses were tested using moderated hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results showed that test anxiety had a negative impact on academic performance (β = -.23; p < .05). Achievement motivation had a positive impact on academic performance (β = .38; p < .05). Also, achievement motivation significantly moderated the relationship between test anxiety and academic performance (β = .10; p < .01). These findings suggest that university management should design appropriate psycho-educational interventions that would enhance students' achievement motivation.

Perfectionism and time perspectives: An inquiry into the association between perfectionism subtypes and categorical time perspectives

The present study investigated the previously unexplored association between the perfectionistic personality dimensions, as defined by the 2 × 2 model of perfectionism, and individual time perspectives. The study tested the relationship between pure self-oriented, pure socially prescribed, mixed and non-perfectionist subtypes and individual time perspectives, using a sample of 129 undergraduate students with a mean age of 19.84 ( SD = 4.60). Participants completed a one-time evaluation using the short versions of the Hewitt and Flett Multidimensional Perfectionism Scales and of the Zimbardo Time Perspectives Inventory. Following moderated hierarchical multiple regression analysis, the main result was discovering evidence of a close association between present fatalism and perfectionistic subtypes. Furthermore, pure self-oriented perfectionism consistently predicted more adaptive outcomes in terms of time perspectives as compared to non-perfectionism in four out of the five time perspectives, supporting the emerging empirical distinction between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism. The study’s overall results indicate that pure self-oriented perfectionism may hold more adaptive merit than non-perfectionism in the case of time perspectives and that present fatalism may hold a close association with the perfectionistic variable.

Ownership Structure and Risk Taking of Malaysian Commercial Banks: The Moderating Effects of Capital Adequacy Ratio

In this research, the direct impact of the three ownership structure (government, institutional and family) on bank risk takings measured by Z-Score is to be investigated. This is based on the Z-Score formulation that is used is based on the context that fits for Malaysia as one of the emerging markets. This research also investigates the impact of the ownership structure with capital adequacy ratio as the moderating element towards bank risk taking as measured by Z-Score, along with the five control variables. Data from eight large domestically-owned commercial banks in Malaysia for the period that runs from 2000 to 2012 are used in this research. Multiple regression and hierarchical moderated multiple regression results suggest that the three ownership structures employed in this study do not have any significant relationship on the risk measure in the direct relationship model. However, the results for the model where capital adequacy is included as a moderating factor show a significant relationship link between ownership structure and bank risk taking behaviour. The exhausted short-timer: Leveraging autonomy to engage in production deviance

This article explores the conditions under which autonomy may lead to production deviance (unsanctioned, non-task-focused behavior) rather than acting as a motivational job characteristic. In a study of 260 manual laborers, we applied Conservation of Resources Theory to propose an interaction among autonomy, emotional exhaustion and employment opportunity in predicting production deviance. We suggest that employees who experience emotional exhaustion may leverage autonomy to engage in production deviance in efforts to conserve and protect remaining energy reserves, particularly when they feel they can secure ‘better’ opportunities than their current job. Results of hierarchical moderated multiple regression analyses revealed that workers reporting high levels of autonomy, emotional exhaustion and employment opportunity also manifested the highest levels of production deviance.
