New U- Pb dating and Hf isotope analyses of detrital zircons from the Penglai group occurred in the Jiaobei terrane, NCC have been conducted. The results display age populations of 1000-1300, 1300-1500, 1500-1700, 1700-1800 and >1800 Ma. The Penglai group has identical age spectra, U and Th variations, Th/U ratios and Hf isotopic compositions of detrital zircons, similar litho- and biostratigraphy, and tectonic setting with the Tonian strata of the southeastern NCC, demonstrating that the Penglai group has tectonic affinity of the NCC, and be deposited during Tonian. Given that the detrital zircon age populations are well consistent with the multiple magmatic and metamorphic thermal events in the NCC, especially, 1000-1300 Ma medium-acid and/or acid igneous rocks have been more and more recognized in the Korean Peninsula, we propose that the Penglai group might be mainly sourced from the NCC. The detrital zircon populations of 1000-1300, 1300-1500, 1500-1700 and 1700-1800 Ma exhibit both positive and negative eHf(t) values, combined with late Paleo-Neoproterozoic basic magmatism represented by large volumes of diabase sills in the NCC, suggesting that the NCC experienced strong crust-mantle interactions which might trigger the continuously multi-stage rifting activities of the NCC during late Paleoproterozoic (1.8 Ga)-Neoproterozoic.
