Microenvironment modulation of Fe single atoms in porous g-C3N4 by introducing −SOx groups for enhanced photo-Fenton reactions

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactions based on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) activation exhibit great potential in the treatment of organic wastewater. For developing efficient photo-Fenton catalysts, a fundamental investigation into the specific catalytic sites and the reaction mechanism is highly desired. Herein, a novel photo-Fenton catalyst (Fe1/CN-SOx) was constructed by synchronously anchoring Fe single atoms (SAs) and oxidized sulfur (−SOx) groups into porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The presence of trace −SOx groups altered the local configuration of g-C3N4 and optimized the coordination microenvironment of Fe SAs, thereby modulating the electronic structures of catalytic sites in favor of H2O2 activation. The cooperation between Fe SAs and the neighboring C atoms bonded with −SOx (C-SOx) enhanced the adsorption and cleavage of H2O2. The photoinduced charge carriers further accelerated Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycles and hydroxyl radical (•OH) production, achieving an efficient photo-Fenton synergistic catalysis for continuous degradation of organic contaminants. The Fe1/CN-SOx catalyst also exhibited excellent anti-interference performance in diverse aquatic systems and good long-term stability, indicating its great potential for applications in water treatment. This study provides an in-depth insight into the optimal fabrication of single-atom active sites by modulating the local structures of support materials, aiming to enhance photo-Fenton reactions.

Synthesis and characterization of X (X = Ni or Fe) modified BaTiO3 for effective degradation of Reactive Red 120 dye under UV-A light and its biological activity

For the sustainable advancement of industrial expansion that is environmentally conscious, harmful dyes must be removed from wastewater. Untreated effluents containing colors have the potential to harm the ecosystem and pose major health risks to people, animals, and aquatic life. Here, we have fabricated Ni or Fe modified with BaTiO3 materials and effectively utilized them for Reactive Red 120 (RR 120) dye degradation under UV-A light. The synthesized materials were characterized, and their structural, and photo-physical properties were reported. Phase segregation was not present in the XRD pattern, as evidenced by the absence of secondary phase peaks linked to iron, nickel, or oxides. Low metal ion concentrations may be the cause of this, and the presence of those elements was confirmed by XPS measurements. The Raman spectra of the BaTiO3/Ni and BaTiO3/Fe samples show a widened peak at 500 cm−1, which suggests that Ni or Fe are efficiently loaded onto the BaTiO3. RR 120 dye photodegradation under UV light conditions was effectively catalyzed by BaTiO3/Fe, as evidenced by its superior performance in the UV irradiation technique over both BaTiO3 and BaTiO3/Ni. Compared to bare BaTiO3, both metal-modified materials efficiently degraded the RR 120 dye. Acidic pH facilitated the degradation process, which makes sense given that the heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction was the mechanism of degradation along with BaTiO3 sensitization. High-acidity sewage can be dangerous and carcinogenic, and conventional biological treatment methods are not appropriate for managing it. In the current investigation, it may be used to treat color effluents with extremely low pH levels. Additionally, the ability of the produced nanocomposites to inhibit the growth of twenty pathogens was examined, along with two fungi, fifteen Gram-negative Bacilli (GNB), one Gram-positive Bacilli (GPB), and two Gram-positive Cocci (GBC).

Photo-Fenton process for degradation of methylene blue using copper ferrite@sepiolite clay

In this research, CuFe2O4 decorated on sepiolite clay (SC@CuFe2O4) catalyst was fabricated using a simple solvothermal process. To study the structure, morphology, and photoelectric characters of the preapred catalyst, a series of methods including SEM, TEM, VSM, DRS, XRD, and EDX were employed in the present study. The investigation demonstrated that the CuFe2O4 particles had a spherical shape and were successfully incorporated onto the fibrous structure of the sepiolite clay (SC). The SC@CuFe2O4 catalyst was utilized in a heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye. The use of SC effectively inhibited the agglomeration of CuFe2O4 and significantly improved the performance of the heterogeneous catalyst in degrading MB under visible light irradiation. The results of the suggested photo-Fenton-like reaction demonstrated that the complete degradation of MB (C = 20 ppm) could be achieved in 200 min reaction time under mild pH conditions. The results of the reuse experiments indicated that the proposed catalyst exhibited a high degree of reusability, maintaining its effectiveness even after six successive cycles. The SC@CuFe2O4 catalyst exhibits a high degree of catalytic capability, low price, and remarkable chemical stability, making it a promising candidate for use as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Enhanced degradation of enoxacin using ferrihydrite-catalyzed heterogeneous photo-Fenton process

The ferrihydrite-catalyzed heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction shows great potential for environmental remediation of fluoroquinolone (FQs) antibiotics. The degradation of enoxacin, a model of FQ antibiotics, was studied by a batch experiment and theoretical calculation. The results revealed that the degradation efficiency of enoxacin reached 89.7% at pH 3. The hydroxyl radical (∙OH) had a significant impact on the degradation process, with a cumulative concentration of 43.9 μmol L−1 at pH 3. Photogenerated holes and electrons participated in the generation of ∙OH. Eleven degradation products of enoxacin were identified, with the main degradation pathways being defluorination, quinolone ring and piperazine ring cleavage and oxidation. These findings indicate that the ferrihydrite-catalyzed photo-Fenton process is a valid way for treating water contaminated with FQ antibiotics.

Single-step solvothermal synthesis of sepiolite-CoFe2O4 nanocomposite as a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for photo Fenton-like reaction

In present research, a novel sepiolite-CoFe2O4 (Sep-CoFe2O4) catalyst was prepared using a facile solvothermal strategy. The structure, morphology, and photoelectric properties of the synthesized catalyst were explored by the SEM, TEM, VSM, DRS, XRD, XPS and EDX methods. The results showed that CoFe2O4 particles had a spherical shape and was successfully deposited on the fibrous structure of Sep clay. The prepared Sep-CoFe2O4 catalyst was employed in heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction for methylene blue (MB) degradation. Sep effectively prevented the aggregation of CoFe2O4 and clearly enhanced the efficiency of the heterogeneous catalyst for degradation of MB under visible light irradiation. In photo Fenton-like reaction, complete degradation of MB (C = 10 ppm) was achieved in 150 min at mild pH value. The reusability experiments showed that the suggested catalyst can be reused after five successive cycles. Besides, a possible degradation mechanism using the photo Fenton-like system was presumed. Accounting for the high catalytic capability, low cost, as well as good chemical stability, the Sep-CoFe2O4 has great potential working as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for degradation of organic contaminants.

Evaluation of basalt powder as a natural heterogeneous catalyst in photo-Fenton like treatment of atrazine

Basalt powder was employed to degrade atrazine (ATZ) under ultra-violet (UV-C) and visible light (vis) irradiation. The characterization of clay catalyst samples was confirmed the presence of ferrous oxide responsible of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton like reactions. Initial tests, using an ATZ concentration of 20 mg L−1 and raw basalt (B-R) form, validated the photo-Fenton like process as the most efficient. The optimal conditions were identified to be: an initial pH of approximately 6, basalt sintered at 600 °C (B-600) with dosage of 0.5 g L−1 under UV-C and 0.75 g L−1 under vis, and initial H2O2 concentration of 1.6 mM. Consequently, ATZ removal (initially at 5 mg L−1) was measured at 96.0% and 55.8% under UV-C and vis light, respectively, after 180 min of irradiation, with reusability of three cycles. The efficiency of the photo-Fenton process was further investigated by monitoring the toxicity bioassays of growth bacteria inhibition and phytotoxicity of the treated solutions. The results indicated that, under both UV and Vis irradiation, even with high ATZ removal efficiency, the toxicity of the process effluent is less than the initial sample. The initial degradation products were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and ATZ degradation pathway in the photo-Fenton like system was proposed, in which the reaction is primarily initiated by alkylic oxidation. Finally, the reaction’s inhibition upon addition of isopropanol and chloroform as scavengers emphasized the significant role of hydroxyl radicals over superoxide in the oxidation of ATZ.

Deep degradation of sulfamethoxazole by the Fe-Co/γ-Al2O3-catalysed photo-Fenton system

ABSTRACT The heterogeneous photo-Fenton system using Fe-Co/γ-Al2O3 as a catalyst was applied in the study of sulfamethoxazole(SMX) degradation. The morphology, structure, elemental composition and metal valence distribution of Fe-Co/γ-Al2O3 were found to be relatively stable before and after the reaction. The highest SMX degradation efficiency and mineralization (The ratio of organic matter being oxidized to carbon dioxide and water) were obtained under the conditions of 15% Fe-Co loading rate, 1:1 mass ratio of Fe and Co, 1 g/L catalyst dosage, 1.5 mL 30% H2O2 dosage, 18 W UV lamp power and 60 min reaction time, which were 98% and 66%, respectively. Radical quenching experiments and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization revealed that ·OH played an important role in the degradation and mineralization SMX in the Fe-Co/γ-Al2O3 heterogeneous photo-Fenton system. Combined with the analysis of N, S and intermediate products, there may be three degradation pathways of SMX in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton system. This work provides a technical reference for realizing the efficient degradation and mineralization of SMX in a heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction system.

Multifunctional TiO2/MIL-100(Fe) to conduct adsorption, photocatalytic, and heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactions for removing organic dyes

BackgroundSince TiO2 photocatalysts were only ultraviolet-light-responsive and homogeneous photo-Fenton had some drawbacks in generating iron sludge, multifunctional TiO2/MIL-100(Fe) composites were synthesized to remove organic dyes under simulated solar light irradiation. MethodsCommercial TiO2 and MIL-100(Fe) precursors were mixed in one pot using a modified reflux method in 12 h, 18 h, and 24 h to fabricate TiO2/MIL-100(Fe) with different weight ratios of the TiO2 and Fe(NO3)2 precursors, including 0.07, 0.15, and 0.30. MIL-100(Fe) was used to efficiently distribute TiO2 and adsorb dyes due to its high specific surface area. Besides, TiO2/MIL-100(Fe) composites could absorb visible light to conduct photocatalytic and heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactions simultaneously. Significant findingsFor the TiO2/MIL-100(Fe) composites (TF15-18), the individual kinetics analysis of removing organic dyes, including dark adsorption and light reaction, belonged to the pseudo-second-order model with the rate constants of 1.682 and 7.702 g·mg−1·min−1, respectively. The completed dye removal was achieved under 90 min dark adsorption and 180 min light reaction under the best conditions of pH=3.5 and 40 μL H2O2 addition in 150 mL MB solution.

Oxidation of tetracycline hydrochloride with a photoenhanced MIL-101(Fe)/g-C3N4/PMS system: Synergetic effects and radical/nonradical pathways

MIL-101(Fe)-based catalysts have been widely used for degradation of organic pollutants based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Hence, a facile calcination and hydrothermal method was used in this study to prepare a MIL-101(Fe)/g-C3N4 composite catalyst with high activity and high stability for PMS activation to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible-light irradiation. We clearly elucidated the mechanism involved in the MIL-101(Fe)/g-C3N4 photo Fenton-catalyzed PMS activation process by separating the PMS activation and pollutant oxidation processes. The synergetic effects of MIL-101(Fe) and g-C3N4 involved MIL-101(Fe) acting as an electron shuttle mediating electron transfer from the organic substrate to PMS, accompanied by redox cycling of the surface Fe(II)/Fe(III). Multiple experimental results indicated that PMS was bound to the surface of MIL-101(Fe)/g-C3N4 during visible irradiation and generation of sulfate radicals (SO4•-), hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide anion free radicals (•O2-) for the radical pathway and singlet oxygen (1O2) and holes (h+) for the nonradical pathway. The major degradation pathways for TC can be described as demethylation, deamination, deamidation and carbonylation. This work provides valuable information and advances the fundamental understanding needed for design and syntheses of metal-free conjugated polymers modified by metal-organic frameworks for heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactions.

Photocatalytic generation of H2O2 over a Z-scheme Fe2O3@C@1T/2H-MoS2 heterostructured catalyst for high-performance Fenton reaction

A Z-scheme Fe2O3@C@1T/2H-MoS2 heterostructured catalyst is constructed using carbon and 1T-MoS2 as bridging layers, realizing high-performance H2O2 generation and a self-sufficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction.

Magnetic porphyrin-based metal organic gel for rapid RhB removal and enhanced antibacterial activity by heterogeneous Photo-Fenton reaction under visible light.

Nanomaterials with visible light-driven catalytic ability are beneficial in controlling environmental pollutants. Porphyrin-based metal organic gel (MOG) was herein synthesized in one step and magnetic metal organic gel (MMOG) was successfully prepared via in-situ reaction of MOG and Fe3O4. This MMOG was developed as a novel visible light assisted Fenton-like catalyst. The catalytic experiments showed the high photo-Fenton activity of MMOG in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of visible light and H2O2 with a RhB degradation efficiency of 94.2% within 40min. Notably, the obtained MMOG can kill E. coli and S. aureus with high killing rate (>99.999%) under visible light. Importantly, the MMOG can be recovered simply by an external magnetic field due to the unique magnetic property. This easily synthesized MMOG with photo-Fenton activity under visible light and magnetic property makes MOG based on the photo-Fenton reaction a prospective material for the environmental and biomedical applications.

A type II heterojunction α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 for the heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of phenol.

The heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction is an effective method of chemical oxidation to remove phenol in wastewater with environmental friendliness and sustainability. Herein, the composite α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4, as a catalyst of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction, has been synthesized by hydrothermal-calcination method using the abundant and low-cost FeCl3·6H2O and g-C3N4 as raw materials. The influence of the annealing temperature during calcination was also investigated. The UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra of samples show that the composite α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 possesses the widest light response range. Furthermore, the transient photocurrent response curves demonstrated the strongest intensity of α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4. The annealed α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 is indicative of the highest degradation efficiency in all samples due to the improvement of the charge transfer ability caused by the tight heterojunction structure. The results of the scavenger trapping experiments show that the hydroxyl radical was the main active species in degradation. Based on experimental results, a type II heterojunction should be built in the composite α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4, driving the photoelectrons transfer and migration by internal electronic field. This work provides a facile and new method to synthesize α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 as an effective heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for environmental remediation.

Amino-functionalized MIL-88B as heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for enhancing tris-(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) degradation: Dual excitation pathways accelerate the conversion of [tbnd]FeIII to [tbnd]FeII under visible light irradiation

In this work, the amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MIL-88B-NH2) was synthesized, characterized and used as heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for tris-(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) degradation. The photo-Fenton activity of MIL-88B-NH2 was investigated on the basis of influence factors, such as initial pH and TCPP concentration, and coexisting impurities. The results revealed that MIL-88B-NH2+H2O2+Vis system exhibited a satisfactory degradation efficiency of TCPP (almost 100%) within 60 min accompanied by a good reusability. Noticeably, the degradation kinetics constant of TCPP by MIL-88B-NH2+H2O2+Vis system was 0.086 min−1, which was visibly higher than that of MIL-88B+H2O2+Vis system (0.021 min−1) since the addition of amino-functionalized organic linker inhibiting the recombination rate of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs and improving the visible light response. Combined with the characterization, the conversion of FeIII to FeII could be accelerated by the photo-generated electron from the excitation of Fe-O clusters and NH2 functionalities, which strengthened the decomposition of H2O2 and formed plenty •OH. Simultaneously, six steady products were validated and potential degradation pathways of TCPP were proposed. It was anticipated that MIL-88B-NH2 could be considered as a desirable and alternative candidate in the application of heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction to control the environmental risks caused by organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs).

Boosting photo-Fenton process enabled by ligand-to-cluster charge transfer excitations in iron-based metal organic framework

Iron-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely adopted to mediate heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction, but poor charge separation efficiency in iron-oxo clusters of MOF usually results in the dull Fe(III)/Fe(II) transformation. In this study, ligand-to-cluster charge transfer (LCCT) excitations were first introduced to photo-Fenton process toward accelerating Fe(III)/Fe(II) transformation by constructing new iron-based MOF nanorods with porphyrin ligand (Fe-TCPP). Fe-TCPP with LCCT excitations showed a maximum kinetic constant of 0.23 min-1 for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation at neutral pH under visible light irradiation, which is remarkably better than most of the state-of-the-art photocatalysts. Experimental and theoretical analyses collaboratively verify that LCCT excitations within Fe-TCPP dramatically accelerate Fe(III)/Fe(II) transformation, which generate more ∙OH for quick CIP elimination. Additionally, this LCCT excitations strategy is also effective for the photo-Fenton-like system induced by copper-based MOFs. Our study presents a novel strategy to intensify MOFs based photo-Fenton/Fenton-like processes, upon which the high-efficiency contaminant removal is expected.

Constructing electrostatic self-assembled ultrathin porous red 2D g-C3N4/Fe2N Schottky catalyst for high-efficiency tetracycline removal in photo-Fenton-like processes

The traditional heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction was mainly restricted by the fewer surface-active sites, low Fe3+/Fe2+ transformation and H2O2 activation efficiency of catalyst. This work designed and fabricated the efficient photo-Fenton Schottky catalysts via a facile electrostatic self-assembly of metallic Fe2N nanoparticles scattering on the surface of red g-C3N4 (ultrathin porous oxygen-doped 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets). The porous morphology and exceptional electrical structure of red g-C3N4 endowed more active sites and facilitated the photoexcited charge separation. Benefitting from the Schottky effect and unique dimensional coupling structure, the strong visible light absorption and fast spatial charge transfer were realized in the Schottky junction system. More strikingly, Fe2N as an efficient co-catalyst was in favor of the trap and export of e-, leading to the Fe3+/Fe2+ transformation and H2O2 activation during the photo-Fenton process. Accordingly, the as-prepared catalysts revealed outstanding activity in photo-Fenton like degradation of tetracycline (TC) although under 5 W white LED light irradiation. Furthermore, the reasonable degradation pathway of TC and corresponding toxicity of the intermediates, as well as the photo-Fenton catalytic mechanism were interpreted and discussed in detail. This study would be a great aid in the development of various Schottky catalysts for heterogeneous photo-Fenton-based environmental remediation systems.

Photodegradation of Reactive Black 5 and raw textile wastewater by heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction using amino-Fe3O4-functionalized graphene oxide as nanocatalyst

Amino-Fe3O4-functionalized graphene oxide (AmGO) was synthesized and had its photocatalytic properties investigated in the degradation of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye and raw textile wastewater (RTW). Graphene oxide was synthesized via modified Hummers method and functionalized with diethylenetriamine and FeCl3 to obtain the AmGO. A 23 factorial design was carried out to optimize the best working conditions; the most statistically significant effect was the AmGO dosage, followed by the initial pH. Kinetics studies were performed and Chan & Chu model the most representative of the experimental data with R2 ≥ 0.95. Experiments of adsorption kinetics were carried out and evidenced that the adsorption of RB5 by AmGO was slower than photodegradation, in which the equilibrium state was reached after 300 min. Moreover, pseudo-second-order model showed the best fit with adsorptive capacity at equilibrium of 53.06 mg∙g−1. AmGO employment in the photodegradation of RB5 exhibited 75 % removal efficiency in less than 2h for the initial dye concentration of 100 mg∙L−1. AmGO also showed satisfactory recycling capacity, since it maintained RB5 removal up to 97 % after 6 cycles. RTW photodegradation experiments exhibited removal efficiencies of 53.25 % for apparent color, and 64.55 % for turbidity. Phytotoxicity assays using cucumber seeds showed low toxicity of the samples after photodegradation, which indicated that toxic compounds were fully mineralized.

Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Reaction for Olive Mill Wastewater Treatment—Case of Reusable Catalyst

Heterogeneous catalysts can be an efficient and economical option for olive mill wastewater (OMW) treatment by an advanced oxidation process if they could be reused. In this work, OMW was treated using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction (artificial ultraviolet light/H2O2/HFeO2). For this purpose, different concentrations of HFeO2 were tested: 0.04; 0.3; 0.8; 5.0; 10.0; 20.0; 30.0, and 50.0 g/L. The following operational conditions were chosen: pH = 3.0, temperature = 20 °C, agitation rate = 700 rpm. The experimental results showed high removal percentages of the main OMW characterization parameters at 50 g/L of HFeO2: %CODremoval = 62.8%; %total phenolic compounds (TPCs) = 88.9%. These results were also compared with those of other control oxidation systems, i.e., UV, H2O2, and UV/H2O2, which provided 35.5 and 56.1%; 46.2 and 74.0%; 48.0 and 76.8% removal, respectively. In addition, the catalyst was reused three times, recovering more than 90.5% of it.

Enhanced Photo–Fenton Removal Efficiency with Core-Shell Magnetic Resin Catalyst for Textile Dyeing Wastewater Treatment

Heterogeneous photo–Fenton reactions have been regarded as important technologies for the treatment of textile dyeing wastewaters. In this work, an efficient core-shell magnetic anion exchange resin (MAER) was prepared through in situ polymerization and used to remove reactive brilliant red (X-3B) in a UV–Fenton system. The MAER exhibited satisfactory removal efficiency for X-3B because of its highly effective catalytic activity. More than 99% of the X-3B (50 mg/L) was removed within 20 min in the UV–Fenton reaction. This is because the uniformly dispersed core-shell magnetic microsphere resin could suppress the aggregation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and, thus, enhance the exposure of Fe reaction sites for catalytic reaction with H2O2. The good adsorption capacity of MAER also played an important role in promoting contact between X-3B and reactive radicals during the reaction. Mechanism research showed that hydroxyl radical (•OH) was the main reactive radicals for the removal of X-3B in the MAER UV–Fenton system. The MAER can be easily separated by a magnet after catalytic reactions. Moreover, the matrix effects of different substrates (Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, and humic acid) were investigated. The results showed that SO42− could be beneficial to improve the removal of X-3B but that the others decrease the removal. The MAER UV–Fenton also removed significant amounts of total organic carbon (TOC) for the X-3B solution and an actual textile dyeing industrial wastewater. The heterogeneous oxidation system established in this work may suggest prospects for practical applications in the treatment of textile dyeing wastewater.

S-doped NiFe-based catalyst for fast degradation of methylene blue by heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction.

S-doped NiFe-based particles were prepared by a solvothermal method and used to degrade methylene blue (MB) aqueous solutions with visible light in a heterogeneous Fenton reaction. The obtained solid samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. It was found that 0.2 gL-1 NiFe2S4 can degrade 99.8% MB solution within 6 min in the presence of 5 mM H2O2 and natural pH. The recycle experiments results indicate that the NiFe2S4 catalyst possessed better stability than NiFe2O4. Furthermore, NiFe2S4 particles can be easily separated from contaminant solution by using a magnet due to their excellent ferromagnetism. COD analysis experiments indicated that the COD removal rate of NiFe2S4 is 73.1% in 30 min. A possible mechanism was proposed, and the degradation products were measured by LC-MS.
