Bayesian estimate of Australian humpback whale calving interval under sparse resighting rates: 1987–2009

This study estimates a calving interval for humpback whales from a longterm photo-ID catalogue of 2,973 individuals resighted in Hervey Bay, East Australia. The study proposes a modification of two existing methods to handle partial identification of sex and age-classes of whales from visual surveys. One method truncates the data to just breeding females and discards all resighting events prior to the first observed breeding event. The second method utilises the multi-stage mark recapture (MSMR) framework and multi-event extension to include all resighted individuals and their entire encounter history. The performance of each method is assessed and the conditioning required to handle ambiguity of sex and age-classes is detailed, which is subtly different from most other mark-recapture methods. Both truncation and the multi-event methods led to similar estimates of calving intervals: 2.98 years (95% CI: 2.27–3.51) and 2.78 years (95% CI: 2.23–3.68) respectively. More importantly, estimates were more sensitive to the exact specification of resighting probabilities among age and sex classes than to the type of conditioning. However, the multi-event framework resulted in more precise estimates of other important life-history parameters such as apparent survival, and included a wider constituency of age and sex classes.

Antarctic waters (Area V) near the Balleny Islands are a summer feeding area for some eastern Australian Breeding Stock E(i) Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae)

Discovery mark tagging provided the first evidence of linkages between eastern Australian and Oceania Humpback whale breeding grounds and the Antarctic Area V feeding areas. Early investigation of movements of humpback whales in the Western Pacific led to the view that the Balleny Islands and the Ross Sea were the summer destinations for humpback whales from eastern Australia and the Oceania breeding grounds. Recent photo-identification (ID) studies provided further evidence of low levels of migratory interchange and complex linkages within Oceania and between eastern Australia and Oceania. We report here the migratory movement of three humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) between Eastern Australia (E(i) breeding stock) and the Area V Antarctic feeding area in the vicinity of the Balleny Islands. Using photo-ID techniques, comparisons between a Balleny Island fluke catalogue (n = 11 individuals) and existing fluke catalogues from eastern Australia (n = 3,120 individuals) and Oceania (n = 725 individuals), yielded three matches to Hervey Bay, Byron Bay and Ballina in eastern Australia and no matches to Oceania. The eastern Australia catalogue (n = 3,120) was made up of Hervey Bay (n = 1,556), Byron Bay, (n = 916) and Ballina (n = 648). The Oceania catalogue (n = 725) is made up of Tonga (n = 282); New Caledonia (n = 160); French Polynesia (n = 159); New Zealand (n = 41); Cook Islands (n = 36); American Samoa (n = 31); Vanuatu, Niue, Samoa and Fiji (n = 11) and Norfolk Island (n = 5). Only three previous individual photo-ID matches have been reported between eastern Australia Breeding Stock E(i) and Antarctic Area V feeding areas in the vicinity of the Balleny Islands and the Ross Sea. Only one genotype match has been reported between Antarctic Area V feeding areas and Oceania breeding grounds. An analysis of the frequencies of whales seen and not seen in the Balleny Islands, Oceania and eastern Australia, relative to the expected frequencies, based on the estimated population sizes and the sizes of the catalogues, supports the hypothesis that Antarctic Area V waters, in the vicinity of the Balleny islands, is a summer feeding area for some eastern Australian humpback whales.

Movement of two humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) satellite-radio tagged off Eden, NSW and matched by photo-identification with the Hervey Bay catalogue

Photo-identification studies of humpback whales off eastern Australia show low levels of movement between eastern Australia and New Caledonia whales. Some eastern Australian humpback whales migrate through the southern waters of New Zealand on route to Antarctic feeding areas. Photoidentification studies have shown that the waters near the Balleny Islands, in Antarctic Area V, are a feeding area for some eastern Australian humpback whales. However, such studies provide no details of the routes taken between New Zealand and Australia and to and from Antarctic feeding areas. Sixteen humpback whales were satellite-linked radio tagged off Eden NSW in 2008. The number and duration of the tag positions reported revealed complete migratory transits from Eden to Antarctic Area V and IV feeding areas. Photographs of the Eden humpback whales were compared to the Hervey Bay photo-identification catalogue and yielded two matches, identified from lateral body marks and dorsal fins. This study provides the first evidence that during the southern migration some humpback whales stopover at Hervey Bay and also migrate past Eden on the NSW coast. The tracks of the two whales from Eden showed that a male sighted in Hervey Bay in the same season moved southeast from Eden towards southern New Zealand. A female with site-fidelity to Hervey Bay in previous seasons, accompanied by a calf when the tag was deployed, moved down and around the coast of Victoria, across Bass Strait and then southwest into the Antarctic Area IV feeding area. Eden may be a migratory hub for humpback whales departing from and approaching the east coast of Australia. This study suggests that eastern Australian humpback whales may exhibit a more diverse range of feeding destinations, after leaving Australian coastal waters, than previously reported.

General surgical unit experience of traumatic vascular injuries in an Australian regional hospital

Background: Vascular trauma is a significant burden to the regional community due to the associated high morbidity and mortality from the complications of the injuries. This may be due to the complexity of the injuries and the issues with initial management at the regional hospitals. Vascular injury management training should improve the outcome of initial surgical management by the general surgical team in regional centres. The study aims to describe the epidemiology and management of vascular injury in regional hospitals in Queensland, Australia.Methods: A retrospective descriptive analysis was performed using the data of patients with traumatic vascular injuries between January 2017 and July 2021 presented to Hervey Bay hospital in Queensland, Australia.Results: Fifty-nine patients with vascular injuries were reviewed. The reported number of penetrating and blunt trauma cases were 43 (72.9%) and 16 (27.1%) respectively, and 42 (71.2%) were males. Most mechanisms of injury were cuts (n=32, 54.2%), followed by falls (n=16, 27.1%) and stabs (n=11, 18.7%). Fifty-one (86.4%) were initially surgically managed regionally, with 21 (35.6%) requiring transfer to a tertiary trauma centre. Outcomes of the incidents resulted in one (1.7%) patient requiring amputation, three (5.1%) needing a fasciotomy and the mortality of two (3.4%) patients.Conclusions: Vascular trauma causes a significant burden to Australian regional hospitals. Identifying injury patterns and common causes for vascular injury will help in early identification and prompt management. Vascular trauma management training should improve the quality of care from the general surgeons in the regional centres.

Post COVID‐19 vaccination: AusVaxSafety survey participation and adverse events – a community‐based regional Queensland study

ObjectiveTo describe adverse events following COVID‐19 immunisation (AEFI) and participation in AusVaxSafety surveillance in a Queensland regional community. MethodsParticipants presenting for second dose COVID‐19 vaccine at the Hervey Bay Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) vaccine clinic in July 2021 completed a survey pertaining to their first COVID‐19 vaccine. Data collected included participation in AusVaxSafety surveillance, vaccine type (BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech) or ChAdOx1‐S(Oxford/AstraZeneca), AEFI experienced and impact on work/routine activities. Multivariable logistic regression related demographic factors to odds of surveillance participation and AEFI occurrence. ResultsOf 1,148 participants, 37.6% participated in AusVaxSafety surveillance and 44.8% reported an AEFI. Participation in surveillance was higher in older (≥50 vs <50 years: OR 1.36, 95%CI:1.04–1.78) and less‐educated participants (university vs. high school/below: OR 0.68, 95%CI:0.48–0.95). Reporting an AEFI was higher in younger (≥50 years vs. <50 years: BNT162b2: OR 0.69, 95%CI:0.51–0.93; ChAdOx1‐S: OR 0.42, 95%CI:0.10–1.89), female (female vs. male: BNT162b2: OR 2.28, 95%CI:1.67–3.12; ChAdOx1‐S: OR 1.85, 95%CI:1.17–2.94) and more educated participants (university vs. high school/below: BNT162b2:OR 1.63, 95%CI: 1.08–2.45; ChAdOx1‐S: OR 3.98, 95%CI:2.03–7.79). Of participants with an AEFI, 15% reported missing work/routine activities. ConclusionsParticipation in surveillance was modest in this regional population, despite AEFI being frequent, and impacts of absenteeism in this setting warrants further research. Implications for public healthThe findings can inform strategies to improve surveillance participation and inform workforce planning in regional areas.

Pelagic and coastal green turtles (Chelonia mydas) experience differences in chemical exposure and effect.

Green turtles foraging in coastal areas are exposed to land-based chemical pollutants that accumulate in the habitats to which they show high site fidelity. However, prior to coastal recruitment, they may be exposed to a different range of chemical threats. The recent development of species-specific in vitro bioassays for marine turtles allows for an effect-based assessment of toxicological endpoints. Blood was collected from green turtles of two life-stages, 'recent recruits' and 'coastal residents', in Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Organic contaminants were extracted from blood using the QuEChERS method, and cytotoxicity of the extracts measured in green turtle skin cells. Although not statistically significant, extracts from 'coastal residents' exhibited greater mean toxicity compared to 'recent recruits', possibly indicative of increased chemical accumulation from coastal habitat exposure. The bioassay results also indicated that turtles foraging in Hervey Bay are at greater risk of chemical exposure than those foraging in Moreton Bay.

Developing Guidelines for Age-Friendly Buses: a Survey of Older Peoples’ Preferences Regarding Headways, Distance to the Bus Stop and Destinations

Background: Transport providers and policy makers should be guided by research evidence when developing age-friendly transportation services. There are significant gaps in the literature regarding older peoples’ preferences for bus headways, distance to the bus stop and destinations. Therefore, the aims of this study are to 1) quantify the preferred headways for older people, 2) quantify the preferred distance to the bus stop for older people, and 3) list and rank the preferred destinations of older people. Methods: A survey of community-dwelling older people in Hervey Bay and Brisbane (both in Australia) was conducted to quantify the preferences of older people regarding headways, distance to the bus stop and destinations. Results: One hundred participants completed the survey. The majority of older people preferred headways of a maximum of 30 minutes during the day and hourly at other times. The preferred distance to the bus stop was 200m or less. Preferred destinations included cross-suburban travel, leisure destinations, shops, central business district, medical services and other towns. Conclusion: These results contrast with usual practice and industry conventions. Transport providers and policy makers who are interested in providing age-friendly services should attempt to meet these guidelines. They may need to consider innovative approaches in order to meet these requirements.

Estimating the natural mortality rate of saucer scallops (Ylistrum balloti) on the Queensland east coast from tag-recaptures

Saucer scallops (Ylistrum balloti) were tagged and released on four occasions inside two areas closed to fishing (Hervey Bay A, HBA; and Yeppoon B, YB) on the Queensland (Australia) east coast and their subsequent recaptures over the following months were used to measure the instantaneous rate of natural mortality (M). A total of 13,295 scallops were tagged and 526 recaptured over the 15 month-long experiment (May 2018 to August 2019). Three statistical approaches were applied to the experimental design and analysis of the tagging data, based on 1) the Brownie model, 2) a modified version of the Brownie model, and 3) a binomial logistic regression model of recaptures. Estimates of M based on the Brownie model were much higher for tagged scallops that were at liberty over summer months compared to those at liberty over the winter months, possibly indicating seasonal variation. The logistic model parameter estimates indicated the proportion of recaptures differed significantly with the lunar phase at recapture, scallop size class, the number of days the scallops were at liberty and the interaction between days-at-liberty and closure. All three approaches indicated M was higher in HBA compared to YB. Mean estimates of M for the whole fishery, derived by averaging estimates from both closures, ranged from a minimum of 1.461 year–1 for the logistic model, to 1.501 year–1 for the Brownie model, to 1.548 year–1 (variable recapture rate) and 1.594 year–1 (fixed recapture rate) for the modified Brownie model. Estimates from all three approaches were higher than the previous estimate that was published over 40 years ago and possible reasons for the increase are discussed.

Cost effectiveness of routine histology for haemorrhoidectomy specimens

Background: Routine histology for haemorrhoidectomy specimens remains commonplace in clinical practice, as a method of detecting incidental anal cancer. However, its utility and cost-effectiveness is unclear in the literature. This study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of routine histology for haemorrhoidectomy specimens in a regional Australian hospital. The secondary aim was to determine the proportion of specimens sent for histology, and whether individual surgeons had a statistically significant preference for whether to send for histology.Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who received haemorrhoidectomies at Hervey Bay Hospital between March 2012 and May 2020. Cost effectiveness of routine histology was investigated by weighing the number of incidental anal cancers detected against the cost of analysis. The proportion sent for histology was determined, both as a whole and by individual consultant surgeons.Results: Routine histology was ordered in 65% of patients who received haemorrhoidectomies over the study period (n=119), costing $13,623 AUD ($1,651 AUD per year). No cases of incidental anal dysplasia or neoplasia were found. Only 1 of the 8 most prolific surgeons over the study period demonstrated a statistically significant preference for whether to send for histology.Conclusions: Our study does not support routine histology for haemorrhoidectomy specimens as a cost-effective practice for detecting incidental anal cancer. Most individual surgeons did not display a clear preference for whether to send for histology.

Social Behaviour of Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in Hervey Bay, Eastern Australia, a Preferential Female Stopover During the Southern Migration

Agonistic competitive social behaviour in humpback whales [Megaptera novaeangliae(Borowski, 1781)] has been extensively studied and reported in previous research. However, non-agonistic social behaviour in humpback whale pods has not been systematically studied. We investigated the social behaviour of 3,949 humpback whale pods over a period of 14 years during August, September, and October in Hervey Bay (Queensland, eastern Australia), a preferential female stopover early in the southern migration. Modelling and analyses of the data examined the factors influencing the occurrence and timing of non-agonistic social behaviour pods, agonistic competitive pods and newly associated pods. Non-agonistic social behaviour was observed more frequently during August when mature females, including early pregnant and resting females, co-occur and socially interact with immature males and females. Overall, relatively few mature males visit Hervey Bay. Agonistic competitive behaviour was observed with increasing frequency during September and October when mother-calf pods, with few escorts predominated. Mother-calf pods in Hervey Bay spent most of their time alone involved in maternal care. Agonistic competitive behaviour is related to the decreasing numbers of potentially oestrous females toward the end of the season. Non-agonistic social behaviour and agonistic competitive behaviour were more frequently observed in larger and newly associated pods. Overall, non-agonistic social behaviour pods were more prevalent than agonistic competitive social behaviour pods. The results of this study substantiate that non-agonistic social behaviour may be more prevalent than aggressive agonistic social behaviour in site-specific locations and habitats, depending upon the classes and timings of humpback whales using such habitats.

The Behavioural Impacts of Commercial Swimming With Whale Tours on Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in Hervey Bay, Australia

Swim-with-whale tourism has expanded across several countries globally, with humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) being the most commonly targeted species of baleen whale. Behavioural responses from humpback whales to swim-with-whale tours have been reported, however, responses are likely context-dependent. In 2014, swimming with humpback whales began in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia, an important resting ground and migratory stopover for humpback whales. The behavioural responses of humpback whales to this swim-with-whale industry have not been examined in Queensland, preventing informed management of this industry. The aims of this study were to: (1) examine short-term behavioural responses in whalesbefore, during, andafterswim-with-whale tours, and (2) investigate behavioural responses of whales throughout swim-with-whale tours compared to whale watch tours. Data were collected on board a commercial vessel, wherebefore, duringandafterdata were collected during swim-with-whale tours (250 h) and whale watch tours (150 h). Within the swim-with-whale tours, behavioural changes were detectedbefore, during, andafterthe vessel approached and placed swimmers in the water on a mermaid line, with the majority of significant changes occurring in theduringandafterphases. The number of direction changes made by the whales was highest when swimmers were in the water and the whales did not resume undisturbed behaviour after the swimmers exited the water. There was a 50% reduction in the proportion of time that whales spent resting during swim-tours compared to during whale watch tours. In both tour types, the time spent engaging in various behaviours was impacted by the distance between the vessel and the whale(s). These results support the conclusion that the behaviour of humpback whales in Hervey Bay was altered in response to swim-with-whale tourism. As humpback whales are capital breeders with limited energy reserves, reducing disturbance to them is of high importance for their continued population recovery and for the sustainability of the marine tourism industry. In Australia, where swim-with-whale tourism is becoming more established, robust education and enforcement programs, combined with continued monitoring of population dynamics through scientific research, are needed to minimise impacts to the population and guide adaptive management strategies.

Phytoplankton Response to Changes in Water Quality and a Flood Event in Hervey Bay, Queensland

Dynamic, integrated and complex processes dominate nearshore marine ecosystems. Industrial, agricultural and population growth delivers pollution and excess nutrient and sediment loads to nearshore marine zones. Climate change also poses serious threats to the delicate balance that exists between and within marine ecosystem processes. Methods to monitor, characterise and model nearshore marine systems have been developed to predict responses to changes in the physical, chemical and biological parameters that constitute elements of a model. Such models are useful to management authorities as they provide a tool to mitigate adverse impacts to marine ecosystems. Phytoplankton community structure provides a sensitive early warning for change to marine ecosystems. It is also a vital component of models derived to determine light attenuation and requirements for healthy seagrass and coral habitats. The multifactorial physicochemical drivers of change to marine microalgae abundance and community structure were investigated in Hervey Bay following two floods, a cyclone and destruction of 1000 km2 of seagrass. A water quality gradient from point sources to offshore sites was identified. Correlations between chlorophyll a (Chl a) and both soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) and total suspended solids was revealed. Diatoms dominated the phytoplankton community structure with seasonal and site differences detected amongst 150 phytoplankton species. Chl a, Secchi depth, SRP and pH maximised the rank correlation with phytoplankton assemblage structure (ρ = 0.63) to best ‘explain’ the link between water quality and phytoplankton (BIOENV). Indicator species include Cylindrotheca closterium for the nearshore degraded sites and Rhizosolenia sp. and Guinardia sp. (G. flaccida and G. striatula) for the offshore more pristine habitats. Following the flood in February 1995, Cylindrotheca closterium, Pseudonitzschia sp. and Skeletonema costatum bloomed at Pulgul Creek (a treated sewage effluent site), and Thalassionema frauenfeldii, Cerataulina bicornis and dinoflagellates bloomed at the mouth of the Mary River (agricultural runoff). Discharge-driven flood impact and trigger values were analysed to assist management authorities in their decision making around potential seafood biotoxin problems associated with harmful algal blooms (HAB’s). Results highlight the importance of species determination rather than Chl a assessment when evaluating the health of an ecosystem. Spring blooms of Trichodesium sp. indicate an additional nutrient source during high traffic of commercial whale watching vessels. Flood impacts highlight the need to schedule dredging, construction and other land management and development activities outside of flood periods. Commercial fishing and swimming should be avoided following a flood due to the health risks associated with toxic phytoplankton species (HAB’s) and for the health and safety of swimmers, consumers and other aquatic species. Future research to replicate this study in Hervey Bay and in other estuaries holds much value to further explore the phytoplankton species identified as bio-indicators of ecosystem health in the present study. Research yet to be published, addresses the links between water quality and seagrass epiphytes, light attenuation and the habitat requirements of seagrass in Hervey Bay.

Trait-based approach reveals how marginal reefs respond to acute and chronic disturbance

Ecosystems worldwide are becoming increasingly altered by environmental stress, yet little is known about how acute disturbances affect ecological communities that already persist under chronically stressful environmental conditions. Here, we use a trait-based approach to understand the effects of repeated flooding on the subtropical reefs of Hervey Bay, Australia (25˚ South) that are considered marginal both in terms of their chronically turbid and high-latitude settings. We quantify variation in taxonomic and functional composition of coral assemblages along spatial gradients of water quality, before and after three flooding events of the Mary River between 2010 and 2013. We demonstrate systematic variation in taxonomic and functional composition along distance from shore and rivers and show remarkable stability of patterns over the course of repeated flooding. This is likely because the reefs of Hervey Bay are regularly exposed to resuspension of sediments, limiting the types of species that are able to persist in these chronically turbid settings, with flood events reinforcing the longer-term stress regime. Greater similarity of co-occurring species on nearshore reefs than expected by chance also supports this hypothesis. Corallite size, coral morphology, the ability to remove sediment, and propagule development rate best explained variation in coral assemblage structure. Specifically, reefs closer to shore and to rivers were characterised by species with large corallites, high sediment removal ability and foliose morphology, strategies considered beneficial in turbid conditions. Among individual traits, symbiont transmission best explained variation in assemblage structure, and it is plausible that the acquisition of locally adapted symbionts from the environment is advantageous in the turbid and light-limited conditions of nearshore reefs. These findings highlight the importance of tolerance to turbidity and sedimentation in driving coral biodiversity patterns in Hervey Bay, with acute flooding reinforcing the long-term stress regime that controls the distribution of species on these marginal reefs.

Combining analytical and in vitro techniques for comprehensive assessments of chemical exposure and effect in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas)

Sea turtle populations foraging in coastal areas adjacent to human activity can be exposed to numerous chemical contaminants for long periods of time. For trace elements, well-developed, sensitive and inexpensive analytical techniques remain the most effective method for assessing exposure in sea turtles. However, there are many thousands more organic contaminants present in sea turtles, often at low levels as complex mixtures. Recently developed species-specific in vitro bioassays provide an effective means to identify the presence, and effect of, organic chemicals in sea turtles. This study used a combination of chemical analysis and effects-based bioassays to provide complementary information on chemical exposure and effects for three green turtle foraging populations (Chelonia mydas) in southern Queensland, Australia. Blood was collected from foraging sub-adult green turtles captured in Moreton Bay, Hervey Bay, and Port Curtis. Twenty-six trace elements were measured in whole blood using ICP-MS. Organic contaminants in turtle blood were extracted via QuEChERS and applied to primary green turtle skin fibroblast cell in vitro assays for two toxicity endpoints; cytotoxicity and oxidative stress. The trace element analysis and bioassay results indicated site-specific differences between foraging populations. In particular, turtles from Moreton Bay, a heavily populated coastal embayment, had pronounced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress from organic blood extracts, and elevated concentrations of Cs, Ag, and Zn relative to the other sites. Incorporating traditional chemical analysis with novel effects-based methods can provide a comprehensive assessment of chemical risk in sea turtle populations, contributing to the conservation and management of these threatened species.

Humpback whale (

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) require a suite of essential habitats during their long migration. Therefore, the identification of critical habitats is important for continuation of their successful recovery. In this study we investigated the behaviours and habitat usage exhibited by humpback whales in two known aggregation sites on the east coast of Australia. Using a combined 5400 humpback whale records collected from Hervey Bay between 1999 and 2009 and from the Gold Coast Bay between 2011 and 2018, we analysed different types of behavioural categories. We found that humpback whales in Hervey Bay primarily exhibited surface travel and non-aggressive social behaviour, whereas both sites appeared to be similarly important for resting. Our results suggest that the Gold Coast Bay provides habitat for a wide range of critical humpback whale activities, in particular for resting mother–calf pairs, mature males seeking copulation and socialising immature whales. Hervey Bay had a higher number of mother–calf pair sightings, confirming the area as an important resting site. This study demonstrates that the two regions are critical habitats for humpback whales during their annual migration, but for different essential activities, and should be considered as a whale protection area.

Long term trends in abundance of humpback whales in Hervey Bay, Australia

Seasonal abundance estimates of humpback whales resident during the austral winter in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia between 1987 and 2007were obtained from a capture-mark-recapture study using photo-identification images of 3,155 individual whales. Hervey Bay is a major southboundstopover site for Breeding Stock E humpback whales returning to Antarctic waters from over-wintering in the vicinity of the Great Barrier Reef.Annual survival, recapture and abundance estimates were derived using a Cormack-Jolly-Seber modelling approach and a Horwitz-Thompson typeabundance estimator. The best-fit model was a 2-ageclass Brownie-Robson type model that estimated apparent annual survival for the non-transientwinter stopover ageclass at approximately 0.945 (95% confidence interval: 0.929–0.957). Apparent annual abundance of winter stopover humpbackwhales in Hervey Bay was estimated to have increased significantly over the past 21 years at ca. 13.4% per annum (95% CI 11.6–15.2). The mostrecent Hervey Bay winter stopover population (2007) was estimated to comprise ca. 6,246 post-yearlings (95% CI 5,011–7,482). This estimatedrate of population increase is similar to estimates for other surveys along the east Australian coast but significantly higher than the intrinsic rate ofincrease (rmax) estimated recently for several recovering Southern Hemisphere humpback whale stocks based on the feeding ground sampling.

Abundance of East coast Australian humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in 2005 estimated using multi-point sampling and capture-recapture analysis

The humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) that migrate along the east coast of Australia were hunted to near extinction during the lastcentury. This remnant population is part of Breeding Stock E. Previous abundance estimates for the east Australian portion of Breeding Stock Ehave been based mainly on land-based counts. Here we present a capture-recapture abundance estimate for this population using photo-identificationdata. These data were collected at three locations on the migration route (Byron Bay – northern migration, Hervey Bay and Ballina – southernmigration) in order to estimate the population of humpback whales that migrated along the east coast of Australia in 2005. The capture-recapturedata were analysed using a variety of closed population models with a model-averaged estimate of 7,041 (95% CI 4,075–10,008) whales.

First assessment of interchange of humpback whales between Oceania and the East coast of Australia

The interchange of individual humpback whales between the wintering grounds of Oceania (South Pacific) and the east coast of Australia weredocumented by individual identification photographs collected from 1999 to 2004. Interchange was assessed using regional catalogues of flukephotographs, totalling 672 individuals from Oceania (represented by New Zealand, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Niue, Cook Island,French Polynesia and American Samoa) and 1,242 individuals from Hervey Bay and Byron Bay representing the southbound and the northboundmigration along the east coast of Australia (EA). Overall, there were seven documented movements between EA and Oceania. Four instances ofmovement of four individuals were documented between EA and the closest breeding grounds of New Caledonia. A further three movements wererecorded between EA and a small catalogue (n = 13) from the New Zealand migratory corridor. In contrast, during this same period, 20 cases ofinterchange were documented among nine breeding grounds: French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Niue, American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatuand New Caledonia. The low level of interchange between Oceania and the east coast of Australia has important implications for understanding thestock structure and abundance of humpback whales in the South Pacific.
