Herty Medal goes to David Sherrill

The 2023 Charles H. Herty Medal goes to C. David Sherrill , Regents’ Professor in the Schools of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Computational Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. This medal is awarded annually by the American Chemical Society Georgia Section to recognize the work and service of an outstanding chemist from the southeastern region of the US. The focus of Sherrill’s research is the development and application of theoretical methods and algorithms in computational quantum chemistry. He is a fellow of ACS, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Physical Society. Sherrill is an associate editor of the Journal of Chemical Physics and was recently elected to the board of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists. Nominations sought for 2023 Herty Medal

The Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society is soliciting nominations for the 2023 Charles Holmes Herty Medal, which is presented annually to recognize the work and service of an outstanding chemist from the southeastern region of the US. The award recipient will be honored by the Georgia Section at the 89th awards banquet in fall 2023 and awarded a gold medal. Nominees may come from academic, government, or industrial settings and must have resided or worked in the southeastern region for more than 10 years. The deadline for submitting nominations is Dec. 15. All new or renewed nominators must complete the online form at acsga.org/herty-nomination . Nominations are active for up to 3 years, but nominators are welcome to update materials, particularly the candidate’s curriculum vitae, yearly.

Herty Medalist named

Anne-Frances Miller, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Kentucky, is the winner of the 2021 Charles H. Herty Medal, presented by the American Chemical Society Georgia Section. The award recognizes outstanding work and service by a chemist in the southeastern US. Miller’s research focuses on the design of human-made materials and devices to capture, store, and transduce electrochemical energy from renewable sources. Her service to the profession and society includes her engagement in outreach activities and her advocacy in the area of water quality. The gold medal will be presented at the 87th Herty Award Celebration in September .

Herty Medal to Susan Richardson

Susan D. Richardson, the Arthur Sease Williams Professor of Chemistry at the University of South Carolina, is the recipient of the 2020 Herty Medal, awarded by the American Chemical Society Georgia Section in recognition of outstanding work and service by a chemist in the southeastern US. Richardson is being honored for her work in understanding the formation of drinking-water disinfection by-products with environmental and human health impacts, as well as for her service to the profession. Richardson will receive the medal during the 86th Herty Award Celebration in September.

The award is given annually to recognize the work and service of an outstanding chemist from the southeastern US. Nominees may come from academia, government, or industry and must have resided or worked in the Southeast for at least 10 years. For the purposes of the award, the southeastern US includes the following states: Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The nomination form is available at acsga.org/herty-nomination. Nominations are due by Dec. 15 and are active for up to 3 years, but nominators can update materials, including the candidate’s curriculum vitae. Lisa McElwee-White wins Herty Medal

Lisa McElwee-White, the Colonel Allen R. and Margaret G. Crow Professor of Chemistry at the University of Florida, is the recipient of the 2019 Herty Medal, awarded by the American Chemical Society Georgia Section to an outstanding chemist in the southeastern US. Among her accomplishments, McElwee-White introduced mechanism-based design of organometallic precursors for fabrication of thin films and nanostructures. She is also being honored for her outreach contributions and service to ACS. The medal will be presented at the 85th Herty Award Celebration in September.

Rigoberto Hernandez is Herty medalist

Rigoberto Hernandez is the recipient of the 2017 Herty Medal, awarded by the Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society. The award recognizes outstanding work and service by a chemist in the Southeast U.S. Hernandez is the Gompf Family Professor at Johns Hopkins University and adjunct professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he served on the faculty for 20 years. The award recognizes Hernandez “for transforming our view of chemical dynamics in nonequilibrium environments, his creative approaches to improving diversity within the chemistry profession, and his leadership at the local and national levels of the American Chemical Society.” The medal will be presented at the 83rd Herty Award Celebration on Sept. 7.

Herty Medal to Brooks Pate

Brooks H. Pate of the University of Virginia is the recipient of the 2016 Charles Holmes Herty Medal, given annually by the ACS Georgia Section to recognize the work and service of outstanding chemists. Pate is being recognized for his work in molecular rotational spectroscopy and its applications in astrochemistry and analytical chemistry, and for his service in mentoring diverse students participating in a summer research program for undergraduates. He will receive a gold medal during an awards dinner on Sept. 15.
