Four Species of Crambidae (Lepidoptera, Pyraloidea) New to Korea

Four species of Crambidae, Patania brevipennis (Inoue, 1982); Herpetogramma tominagai Yamanaka, 2003; Aethaloessa calidalis (Guenee, 1854); Anania subfumalis (Munroe et Mutuura, 1971), are reported for the first time from Korea. The genus Aethaloessa is new to the Korean fauna. Photos of external and genital features are provided for those species. Subspecies assignment and occurrence status in Korea are discussed for Aethaloessa calidalis and Anania subfumalis.

A new species of Herpetogramma (Lepidoptera, Crambidae, Spilomelinae) from eastern North America

Herpetogramma sphingealis sp. n., a new species of Crambidae (Lepidoptera), is described from Québec, Canada. The species is included in the genus Herpetogramma Led., 1863, a genus in the subfamily Spilomelinae. Adults and genitalia of this species are described and illustrated, as well as those of Herpetogramma aeglealis (Walker, 1859) and Herpetogramma thestealis (Walker, 1859), and adults of the semi-melanic form of Herpetogramma aeglealis are illustrated.

Tropical grass webworm (Herpetogramma licarsisalis) implications for dairy farming in Northland

The presence of larvae of Herpetogramma licarsisalis (tropical grass webworm (TGW)) in pasture on the Aupouri Peninsula in Northland New Zealand was confirmed in March 1999 A delineation survey undertaken in late March 1999 found an infested area of approximately 37 000 ha of which 4450 ha was in dairying The establishment of TGW in the area has been confirmed by ongoing monitoring of populations from 1999 to the present Populations decline to extremely low numbers over the winter months with the main pasture damage period in early autumn (March/April) Infestations to date have been mainly confined to kikuyu pastures In 1999 and 2002 visual estimations were made of pasture damage by TGW The implications of this damage are discussed within the context of management practices and economic constraints for dairy farming in the area

Development of a Survey Technique for Larvae of the Grass Webworm and Other Lepidopterous Species in Turfgrass 1

Sampling techniques for larvae of the grass webworm, Herpetogramma licarsisalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in turfgrass were studied. Sprinkling 1 liter of a 0.0015% aqueous solution of pyrethrins or 0.25% detergent into a 1,860-cm2 frame forced 61 and 55% of the larvae to the surface, respectively, compared with 4 liters of each irritant. The need for a greater volume of water than the commonly used technique of applying 4 liters/0.84 m2 was apparent. Continuous observation was required during the 10 min after application of either irritant to assure an accurate count, since 29% of the surfaced larvae reentered the thatch within 5 min and 38 to 39% reentered within 10 min. The detergent forced >50% of the larve to surface within 2 min. compared with 4 min with pyrethrins. Liquid irritants surfaced ca. 3 times more larvae in 5 to 10 min than plywood set out overnight. Similar responses to the presence of minor populations of the lawn armyworm, the black cutworm, and the fiery skipper indicate that other turf-infesting lepidopterous larvae may be sampled with the same techniques.
