Hadith Preservation: Techniques And Contemporary Efforts

Hadith is an important source of Islamic teachings. The method of Hadith preservation during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and after his demise has constantly been criticised by Orientalists and critics of Islam. Most of their objections emphasise that Hadith could not have been accurately transmitted orally over a century. Thus, conducting research on how Hadith has been preserved is crucial, particularly to remind the critics that Allah’s (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) promise to protect His Book is not limited to the Qur’an, but also extends to the Hadith, which explains the meanings of the Qur’an. Additionally, it is crucial to continuously discuss the painstaking efforts that went into Hadith preservation, which make Muslims believe with absolute certainty that Hadith were accurately preserved. On this basis, this article discusses the multifaceted landscape of Hadith preservation by exploring the techniques employed and contemporary efforts in preserving this rich Islamic heritage. Relevant books, academic journal articles, lecture notes, and webpages were reviewed in writing this article. The three main techniques that played a significant role in preserving Hadith are memorisation, the principle of practice, and documentation. Moreover, the contemporary efforts that contributed to Hadith preservation include the massive publication of academic books and journals on Hadith, the establishment of faculties in major universities that offer Hadith studies as a specialised academic program, the increase in comparative jurisprudence studies that refer to Hadith as one of the most important references, the need to respond to Orientalist theories on Hadith, and the advent of digital technology.

This study examines the educational methods derived from Al-Ilbiri's advice to his son, a significant Islamic heritage text that offers valuable educational guidance. The research aimed to analyze this advice from a contemporary educational perspective and explore its applicability in modern education. A questionnaire was used as a tool to collect data from a diverse sample of teachers, researchers, and academics. The findings revealed that the educational methods presented by Al-Ilbiri, such as the promotion of ethics and values, encouragement of critical thinking and independence, and providing practical life advice, remain highly effective and can be integrated into current curricula. The study also found a notable alignment between these methods and modern educational practices, with potential adaptations to meet contemporary needs. The validity of the questionnaire was ensured through expert review, and its reliability was measured using the test-retest method. The research concludes that integrating the principles of Al-Ilbiri's advice into educational curricula can significantly contribute to the development of moral values and the enhancement of cultural identity among students, with recommendations for developing interactive educational units focusing on the values discussed in the advice.

Ashab al-Kahfi dalam Tulisan Orientalis Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: Studi Semantik tentang Intertekstualitas dengan Surah Al-Kahfi

This study analyses how the poem "Ashab al-Kahf" in the writings of the orientalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe connects with Surah Al-Kahf through intertextuality. The overlap of the poem with the story " Ashab al-Kahf" in the Quranic Surah highlighted the extent of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's influence by the Quran and Islamic heritage. This research aimed to study and analyze some of the words used in the poem using an analytical and comparative approach to understand Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's understanding of the story, the significance of the chosen words, and the impact of intertextuality with the Quranic text on shaping the poem's meanings. The findings indicated that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe faithfully presented the events, characters, and the spatial context of the story. His chosen words highlight the strong link between the poem and the Quranic text which shows the author's deep engagement with the Quranic narrative.

The study aimed to explore anxiety as a psychological phenomenon, including its types, causes, and treatment methods in light of the Holy Quran and modern psychology. The research employed a descriptive-analytical approach by collecting relevant Quranic verses and comparing these concepts with those found in psychology books, as well as examining the insights of Muslim scholars and modern psychology regarding anxiety, its types, causes, and treatment. The study found that anxiety is a modern psychological concept that affects individuals due to fear, stress, or excessive thinking about certain life issues, often of unknown origin, and is a source of psychological pressure. It also revealed that the verses in the Quran addressing doubt and suspicion refer to anxiety in its modern sense. Additionally, the study showed that Quranic stories illustrate the levels and types of anxiety experienced by the prophets in different situations, including psychological anxiety, social anxiety, and objective anxiety related to their prophetic missions. Furthermore, the Quranic verses focused on the anxiety of specific groups, such as hypocrites and disbelievers, particularly concerning their doubt and suspicion in receiving the divine message and opposing the prophets. The study recommends incorporating psychological studies rooted in Islamic heritage into university curricula and encourages researchers to conduct in-depth studies on such topics. It also advocates for integrating psychological studies from the Quran and Sunnah with modern psychology.

ABU AL-ʿABBĀS B. TAYMIYYAH’S SOCIETAL SECURITY PARADIGM: A PHILOSOPHICAL EXPLORATION IN ISLAMIC POLITICAL HERITAGE

This research endeavors to scrutinize the hypothesis positing the existence of a well-defined theoretical model embedded within the Islamic political heritage, specifically aimed at safeguarding societal identity, commonly denoted as "social security" in contemporary discourse. The focus of this investigation centers on assessing the contributions of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah, a pivotal figure in Islamic heritage. His era was marked by various internal and external challenges confronting the Muslim community, prompting him to respond actively through scholarly works, issuance of fatwas, and strategic measures to counter these threats. In an innovative methodological approach, the researchers have employed the "societal security" theory articulated by Bouzan, Waever, and De Wilde as a framework to elucidate the Taymiyyan model. This involved extrapolating, identifying, and analyzing the relevant texts authored by the Imam pertaining to the subject under scrutiny. The study's outcome presents a theoretically sound model derived from the principles and teachings of Islamic Sharia, in accordance with the perspective of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah. At its core, this model entails the provision of guidance through legal rulings and fatwas to safeguard the five necessities in Islam, namely Religion, life, Regeneration, intellect, and wealth, with a particular emphasis on the communal level. The defence of these communal necessities begins with the promotion of virtuous deeds and the discouragement of wrongdoing within society, employing mechanisms such as the "Hisbah apparatus". Ultimately, the preservation of the Muslim community's identity from potential disintegration or compromise in the face of encroaching civilizations or ideologies may necessitate resorting to the deployment of political and military force to repel aggressors.

Dynamics of Thought in the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah at Pesantren Affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in Yogyakarta

This paper explains the dynamics of thought in the Halaqah Fikih Peradaban (Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah, HFP) at pesantren (Islamic boarding school) ideologically affiliated with NU. The spirit of fiqh contextualization developed in the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah is a key idea of PBNU in initiating civilization fiqh as a new approach to understanding and studying Islamic heritage. This paper elaborates on two aspects. First, why PBNU initiated the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah and how the dynamics of thought occur within it. Second, how pesantren affiliated with NU discuss one of the main focuses of the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah related to nationality and statehood. The authors use the theory of Islamic Law Sociology to explain the reciprocal relationship between the socio-religious topics discussed in the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah and the dynamic and critical way of thinking. This paper uses qualitative research. The primary data was obtained through interviews with several sources and five caretakers who conducted the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah in five pesantrens. Supporting data was obtained from documents and other news sources that review the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah. The research results show that the reason for the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah initiated by PBNU is to create a discourse space for contextualizing progressive fiqh understanding and developing a dynamic way of thinking. Through this approach, fiqh can be used as an inclusive perspective in understanding social change and the development of the times. This study also shows that the theme of nationality and statehood (fiqh siyāsah) discussed in the Fiqh of Civilization Halaqah in five Pondok Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) promotes dynamic and progressive thinking while critiquing fiqh siyāsah studies limited to the khilāfah. This attitude aligns with the spirit of civilization fiqh initiated by PBNU, which emphasizes a dialectical perspective in studying Islamic heritage.

The History of Islamic Science and Its Characteristics: A Valuable Contribution to the Development of Islam in Modern Times

<em>As a religion that encompasses comprehensive aspects of life, Islam has made important contributions to science throughout its history. The history of Islamic science dates back to the early Islamic enlightenment from the 7th to the 14th century AD. Strong emphasis was placed on the synthesis between science and religion. Scientific thinking and research were conducted with the understanding that knowledge of the universe was integral to an understanding of God's creation. Islamic science is characterised by an inclusive and multi-disciplinary approach. Muslim scholars of the time did not limit themselves to one particular field of science, but rather studied and developed knowledge in various disciplines such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine, physics, chemistry and philosophy. His valuable contributions to human civilisation. It also raises the question of how Muslims can combine the scientific heritage of Islam with the demands and challenges of the modern world, and how such a fusion can contribute to the sustainable and progressive development of Islam. As a result, the concept of Islamic science continues to be developed to this day.</em>

Peningkatan Kemandirian Santri Lintang Songo Bantul dan Upaya Pelestarian Warisan Islam Nusantara Melalui Produksi Kaos Arab Pegon

The Lintang Songo Bantul Islamic Boarding School is one of the Islamic boarding school institutions that emphasizes aspects of entrepreneurial independence for its students. This community service is carried out to increase the independence aspect of the students through the production of t-shirts with Arabic Pegon inscriptions. This activity was chosen because previously the students had been equipped with expertise in the field of convection, but there were no specific specifications that would be developed by the students. The production of Arab Pegon t-shirts is an effective breakthrough because 1. The students have been equipped with expertise in the field of convection; 2. T-shirts are a convection product that can be accepted by all ages and groups; 3. Pegon Arabic script is a characteristic of Islamic boarding school products as well as an effort to maintain the Islamic heritage of the archipelago. The stages of activities carried out in community service are: 1. Workshop on writing Pegon Arabic script; 2. Entrepreneurial motivation and business analysis in the t-shirt sector; 3. Training on Arab Pegon t-shirt design and content; 4. Theory and practice of Arab Pegon t-shirt screen printing. The results of the implementation of the service are: 1. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test, it shows that there is an increase in the students' ability to write and read the Pegon Arabic script; 2. The students understand the ins and outs of the t-shirt business; 3. Creation of several t-shirt designs and content; Students can independently apply screen printing techniques on t-shirts with special designs bearing the Arabic Pegon script

FOSTERING RELIGIOUS HARMONY: NURTURING TOLERANCE IN ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOLS THROUGH KIAI'S EXEMPLARY, CURRICULUM, AND DAILY ACTIVITIES

Tolerance plays a pivotal role in fostering positive impacts within society, particularly in Indonesia where Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School), as the oldest educational institutions, shape the character of Santri (students) and instills the essence of tolerance. This article aims to describe and analyze how exemplary leadership by the Kiai (Islamic kiais), the curriculum taught, and the daily activities of students in fostering religious tolerance in Khalaf and Salaf Islamic Boarding Schools. The study was conducted as field research using qualitative descriptive methods, delving into Al-Mujatama’ al-Islami (khalafiyyah), and Arroudhotul Wahidah (salafiyyah) Islamic Boarding Schools. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, and documentation from kiais and student teaching staff. The systematic data analysis involved collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, validated through source triangulation. The research results demonstrate that the kiais at both Islamic Boarding Schools exhibit exceptional leadership by promoting inclusivity and understanding through interactions with students from diverse backgrounds. They value dialogue, respect diverse opinions, and uphold tolerance. Al-Mujatama’ al-Islami Islamic Boarding School prioritizes religious education and practical skills to foster religious tolerance, while Arroudhotul Wahidah Islamic Boarding School excels in teaching Islamic Heritage Books, fosters tolerance, respect for diverse views, social consciousness, and discourse. Those Islamic Boarding Schools use structured schedules, group activities, and an all-encompassing educational strategy to foster respect, unity, and holistic growth among students. They cultivate individuals with diverse competencies and compassionate values, emphasizing how religious teachings influence attitudes toward tolerance and respect for religious diversity.

Asset Management in Islamic Inheritance: A Solution for Economic Empowerment Obstacles

If inheritance assets are transferred, the economic well-being of heirs should increase. However, conflicts among heirs often prevent this, resulting in unproductive or disputed assets with unclear ownership. These disputes significantly hinder the economic progress of the heirs. This article attempts to propose a solution to the problem. According to Islamic inheritance principle, before distribution, there are three obligations must be fulfilled: handling the body's costs, repaying the deceased's debts, and executing their will within limits. Afterward, remaining assets can be distributed among entitled heirs according to Islamic inheritance laws. The remaining assets, termed inheritance, can enhance heirs economic empowerment when distributed. The asset management approach that focuses on Islamic inheritance is expected to further impetus for the economic strengthening of individual beneficiaries specifically, as well as benefit the Muslim community and the general public in the country, such as alleviating conflicts and cultivating heightened economic activity. This qualitative study utilizes a library research approach with phenomenological lens. Based on the literature review conducted, asset management based on the principles of Islamic heritage with the aim of increasing economic empowerment is: providing education to families about Islamic inheritance; accurately record ownership of property, debts, and receivables; the written documents as proof of ownership of asset, and the determination of inheritance rights and their division should be held; utilizing inheritance assets productively to establish sustainable individual or family finances.

The study of Islamic heritage by predecessors of the Ummah regarding moral philosophy reflects the views and thoughts of Muslim philosophers who have elucidated the nature and essence of ethics and discussed its fundamental principles and theoretical foundations. In the introduction of these intellectuals, two prominent Islamic philosophers, Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad Ghazali and Abu Ali Ahmad ibn Muhammad Miskawayh, stand out among others. The perspective of these Muslim philosophers on the concept, subject, and goals of the science of ethics, as well as the originality of their theories concerning their relative dependence on the ethical theories of Greek philosophers, is a matter that requires an analytical-descriptive investigation. The present findings indicate that the ethical theory of these two great thinkers generally aims at objectives such as the growth and elevation of moral conscience, purification of the soul, purification of the heart and inner self, strengthening the relationship between the self and the Almighty Creator, moral refinement and optimization, organizing and rectifying human conduct and behavior, achieving balance among the dimensions of human existence, strengthening fraternal bonds, cooperation and benevolence within society, and institutionalizing goodness and virtue, wisdom, courage, chastity, and justice among society and humanity at large by adhering to Islamic ethical standards.

This research was carried out with the aim of finding out more deeply about the historical development of Islamic culture in Kerinci. People in Kerinci still don't know much about the historical and cultural heritage of Islam in Kerinci. This type of research uses qualitative descriptive techniques. Research findings show that the construction of mosques is a fundamental aspect of Islamic society. However, the process of building a mosque involves a combination of Islamic, indigenous and foreign cultural elements. Based on the mosque's use at that time, apart from being a place of worship, this mosque also functioned as a place for religious discussions.

The Islamic heritage constitutes a very precious treasure in Algeria, especially the places of worship (mosques), which reflect the symbol of this heritage. They are considered important landmarks in cities through architectural elements such as the dome and the minaret. Minarets are used by the muezzin to invite people to pray; they were previously built near the mosque or inside it, next to the prayer room. Later, they appeared as angular towers of mausoleums. This research is part of an analytical study of the minarets in Algeria during the medieval period (Bani Hamad, Moravid, Zayyanid, Marinid, and Ottoman) which were selected and then classified according to their various typologies (dimensions, forms, designs, etc.), and evolution over time. The main objectives of this work are to search for the forms that determine the typology of the minarets of each period. It also examines the correlation between dimensions and geometric parameters employed in the design conception of these minarets. The research followed a monographic method that relies on field observation and documentation, while including a thorough reading of history. The results show that the constant form of the vertical section of the minaret, with the same dimensions between the top and bottom, represents two-thirds of the main tower of the minarets. We also conclude that the square shape of the horizontal section of the minaret represents two-thirds of the main tower of the minarets, which expresses the most earthquake-resistant form. These dimensions play a pivotal role in enhancing the minaret's visual allure and architectural equilibrium, in addition to their earthquake resistance virtues.

Follow Father or Mother? Understanding the Monoethnic Identification of Biethnic Children in China

Abstract In China, children’s ethnicity is often decided by their parents at the time of birth or during childhood; individuals are only allowed to be identified by a single ethnicity. Ethnic identification is therefore a contested issue shaped by the intra-family power structures that determine which parent’s ethnic heritage will be passed down. In this paper, we use China’s 2005 and 2015 inter-census surveys to examine the factors impacting the ethnic identification of children in interethnic families. We find the likelihood that children are identified with their fathers’ ethnicity decreased between 2005 and 2015. Relative to children with a minority mother and a Han father, those with a Han mother and a minority father, and those with parents from different minority groups have higher odds of following their father’s ethnicity. Being a girl, being older, having more educated parents, having urban or migrant status, and living in prefectures with a higher concentration of ethnic minorities all tend to lower the odds of identifying with the father. Moreover, stratified models demonstrate that in families where the father is the only minority parent, Islamic heritage positively predicts boys’ adoption of fathers’ ethnicity, but negatively predicts girls’ adoption. Eligibility for bonus points on the college entrance exam is negatively associated with the odds of following father when the mother is the only minority parent, but the association turns positive when the father is the only minority parent. The results illustrate the nuanced social processes involved in the social construction of ethnic identification.

For forty years, AJIS has been a trusted plat­form for researchers, scholars, and practitioners, serving as a conduit for the exchange of ideas, the dissemination of cutting-edge research, and the cultivation of intellectual dialogue. Many of us found this journal a space for ruminating, discussing, and developing our own narratives on our Islamic heritage and what it means in the contemporary world. Especially compared to anti-Islamic biases in other corners of academia, AJIS is a coming “home.” One constant throughout the past four decades is the journal’s commit­ment to scholarship that documents and explores Islam’s rich religious, intellectual, legal, philosophical, and social heritages. The assumption is that these various perspectives have meaningful things to say about the human condition and our place in the world. Debate, discussion, and disagreement all appear in these pages, but always grounded in an underlying steadfastness that Islam is a faith tradition that is not obso­lete; that Muslims can contribute positively to humanity’s betterment. That said, the journal is not a place of religious homilies. This is an academic journal, with a double-blind peer review process. Articles that are published thus pass muster in the discipline in which they conduct their research. Let us thank the authors who have entrusted us with their groundbreaking research, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and enriching our understanding of critical issues in our disciplines. Child Care Management from The Point Of View Of The Book Of Ihya' 'Ulūm Al-Dīn In Malaysia

This research investigates the management of child care from the perspective of the Book of Ihya' 'Ulūm al-Dīn in Malaysia. Against the backdrop of a country rich in Islamic heritage and cultural diversity, this study explores the relevance of the concepts in the Book of Ihya' 'Ulūm al-Dīn in the context of childcare in Malaysia. The library research research method is used to collect, evaluate and analyze related literature, including relevant primary and secondary sources. The results of the analysis show that concepts such as religious education, character formation, and the development of moral values in the Book of Ihya' 'Ulūm al-Dīn have a strong suitability to the life of Malaysian society. This research also highlights the important role of parents, teachers and society in implementing Islamic principles in child care management practices. The implications of the findings of this research include the need to integrate the values of the Book of Ihya' 'Ulūm al-Dīn in educational policies and community development programs to form a generation with noble and responsible morals. In conclusion, this research provides an in-depth understanding of the contribution of Islamic teachings in the management of child care in Malaysia and paves the way for further research in understanding the practical application of these values in society.

MAQĀṢID DIRĀSAT AL-MA'RIFAH AL-TĀRĪKHIYYAH FĪ AL-QUR'ĀN AL-KARĪM

The Holy Quran is the undisputed first source of science in the Islamic heritage. However, this source has faded in some human sciences that have been affected by positivist thought and Western epistemology, including the science of history. This paper aims to restore consideration of the Holy Quran as a methodological and cognitive source for historical studies. In order to achieve this goal, this paper invoked two aims of the study of historical knowledge in the Holy Qur’an, namely the purpose of methodological necessity and the purpose of cognitive sufficiency of the Qur’an as a source in the study of history. This paper relied on the qualitative approach, which starts by induction and description, then qualitative analysis, and ends with drawing conclusions. As a result, the paper invested the purposes of studying Qur’anic knowledge in the field of history to prove the cognitive value and methodological accuracy of the historical knowledge enshrined in the Holy Qur'an.

The fountain of springs in Sharh al-Masabeeh by Ali bin Salah al-Din al-Sukhumi (d. 774 AH) Chapter: Virtues of the Promising Ten (Study and Investigation)

ABSTRACT This research, entitled: (Manhal al-Yanabe’e fi Sharh al-Masabih, by Ali bin Salah al-Din al-Sukhumi, Chapter on the Virtues of the Promising Ten) The book “Masbah al-Sunnah” by Imam al-Baghawi is considered a type of science of hadith; Therefore, it gained importance in this field, so the scholars accepted it and worked on it and took care of it, and they made great efforts in it and spent precious times in serving it. And each has its own approach, and among those who pioneered the explanation of “Masbah al-Sunnah” is Judge Nasser al-Din Abdullah bin Omar al-Baydawi, and he called his explanation “Tuhfat al-Abrar Sharh al-Masbah al-Sunnah” and other scholars, due to the importance of this book, and my desire to serve the honorable hadith of the Prophet, and may God Almighty make it easy I obtained two copies of the manuscript, so I began to investigate and study, relying, after God Almighty, on the most important books and sources in various legal sciences such as interpretation, hadith, creed, biographies, translations, books of strangers and language, and others. This study aims: to serve the sciences of hadith, And to highlight the scientific value of the book, and followed in the study: the inductive approach, then the analytical approach, and the study recommends: the need for science students to direct towards the realization of the Islamic heritage.
