Successful treatment of restless legs syndrome accompanied by headaches for 30 years with herbal prescriptions containing Paeoniae Radix: A case report

BackgroundRestless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that causes unpleasant symptoms in the legs when resting, which are relieved by movement. Pharmacotherapy is the standard treatment. However, current treatment provides only symptomatic relief and may result in adverse effects with long-term use. Treatment protocols using herbal medicines have emerged to compensate for this limitation. Case presentationA 70-year-old Asian woman visited our hospital with worsening headaches that had persisted for 30 years. Her headaches were aggravated by night-time lower-extremity discomfort. The patient was diagnosed with RLS based on the 2012 Revised International Restless Leg Syndrome Study Group Diagnostic Criteria (IRIS). The patient was prescribed herbal medicines, Shihogyeji-tang, Gyejibokryeong-hwan, and Jakyakgamcho-tang, all of which contain Paeoniae Radix. Fourteen days after starting herbal medicine treatment, the IRIS score decreased from 30 to 18. The patient experienced less leg discomfort. Moreover, her sleep time increased, and her headaches resolved. After 28 days of herbal treatment, the IRIS score decreased to 9. Importantly, the patient reported no sleep disturbance or headaches. Subsequently, conventional medications were discontinued. The patient remained stable (IRIS score: 9–10). Herbal treatment was discontinued on day 163. At the last follow-up, (day 364), the patient has not reported any symptom recurrence. ConclusionsWe described a female patient with a 30-year history of RLS symptoms and related sleep disturbances that induced chronic uncontrolled headaches, who experienced improvements shortly after using herbal medicines containing Paeoniae Radix. Conventional medications were discontinued and the patient had no recurrence of symptoms. Considering these, herbal medicines containing Paeoniae Radix may be a suitable alternative treatment for RLS and its related symptoms.

Cultural persistence and the 'herbal medicine paradox': Evidence from European data.

The use of herbal or traditional medicines has survived the proliferation of modern medicine. The phenomenon has been labeled as the 'herbal medicines paradox' (HMP). We study whether such HMP hypothesis can be explained by the persistence of attitudes across cultural boundaries. We undertake a secondary analysis of individual-level migration data to test the persistence of the use of herbal medicines in relation to norms in the person's country of birth (or home country). We study the association between attitudes towards herbal medicine treatments of both first (N = 3630) and second-generation (N = 1618) immigrants in 30 European countries, and the average attitudes of their sending country origins. We find robust evidence of an association that is stronger for the second-generation migrants. We document a stronger effect among maternal than paternal lineages, as well as significant heterogeneity based on migrants' country of origin. Our estimates are robust to different sample analysis. Our estimates are consistent with a cultural explanation for the HMP.

A Case Study of Combined Korean Medicine Treatment of Paraplegia Diagnosed as Spinal Cord Infarction

Spinal cord infarction is one of the rare strokes with no clear signs of serious nerve damage or after-effects. This study reports on the effectiveness of a combined treatment of Korean medicine and acupuncture on bilateral paraplegia, dysuria, and constipation in a patient with sudden-onset spinal cord infarction. An 84-year-old male patient was diagnosed with spinal cord infarction in August 2022. After diagnosis by whole spine MRI, he received treatment for two months at another hospital, but the improvement was insignificant. He then received Korean medicine treatment, and during this period, his lower extremity manual muscle test grade improved from 3 to 4 and his modified Rivermead mobility index score increased by 13 points, compared with hospitalization. Dysuria improved with acupuncture, and constipation improved with herbal medicine treatment. A combination of herbal medicine and acupuncture can be used to treat paraplegia, dysuria, and constipation caused by spinal cord infarction.

An Observational Multi-Center Study Protocol for Distribution of Pattern Identification and Clinical Index in Parkinson’s Disease

Objectives: This study investigated the pattern identification (PI) and clinical index of Parkinson’s disease (PD) for personalized diagnosis and treatment.Methods: This prospective observational multi-center study recruited 100 patients diagnosed with PD from two Korean medicine hospitals. To cluster new subtypes of PD, items on a PI questionnaire (heat and cold, deficiency and excess, visceral PI) were evaluated along with pulse and tongue analysis. Gait analysis was performed and blood and feces molecular signature changes were assessed to explore biomarkers for new subtypes. In addition, unified PD rating scale II and III scores and the European quality of life 5-dimension questionnaire were assessed.Results: The clinical index obtained in this study analyzed the frequency statistics and hierarchical clustering analysis to classify new subtypes based on PI. Moreover, the biomarkers and current status of herbal medicine treatment were analyzed using the new subtypes. The results provide comprehensive data to investigate new subtypes and subtype-based biomarkers for the personalized diagnosis and treatment of PD patients. Ethical approval was obtained from the medical ethics committees of the two Korean medicine hospitals. All amendments to the research protocol were submitted and approved.Conclusions: An objective and standardized diagnostic tool is needed for the personalized treatment of PD by traditional Korean medicine. Therefore, we developed a clinical index as the basis for the PI clinical evaluation of PD.

Accurate network pharmacology and novel ingredients formula of herbal targeting estrogen signaling for psoriasis intervention

Ethnopharmacological relevanceAs a common chronic inflammatory skin disease, psoriasis is incompletely understood and brings a lot of distress to patients. The estrogen signaling pathway has been implicated in its pathogenesis, making it a potential therapeutic target. Si Cao Formula (SCF) has demonstrated promise in treating psoriasis clinically. However, its molecular mechanisms concerning psoriasis remain largely unexplored. Aim of the studyTo elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the action of SCF on psoriasis. Materials and methodsActive ingredients were identified by LC-MS/MS. After the treatment with SCF, the exploration of differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were conducted using tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics analysis. By GO/KEGG, WikiPathways and network pharmacology, core signaling pathway and protein targets were explored. Consequently, major signaling pathway and protein targets were validated by RT-qPCR, immunoblotting and immunofluorescence. Based on Lipinski's Rule of Five rules and molecular docking, 8 active compounds were identified that acted on the core targets. Results41 compounds of SCF and 848 specific targets of these compounds were identified. There were 570 DEPs between IMQ (Imiquimod) and IMQ + SCF group, including 279 up-regulated and 304 down-regulated proteins. GO/KEGG, WikiPathways and network pharmacology revealed estrogen signaling pathway as the paramount pathways, through which SCF functioned on psoriasis. We further show novel ingredients formula of SCF contributes to estrogen signaling intervention, including liquiritin, parvisoflavone B, glycycoumarin, 8-prenylluteone, licochalcone A, licochalcone B, oxymatrine, and 13-Hydroxylupanine, where targeting MAP2K1, ILK, HDAC1 and PRKACA, respectively. Molecular docking proves that they have good binding properties. ConclusionOur results provide an in-depth view of psoriasis pathogenesis and herbal intervention, which expands our understanding of the systemic pharmacology to reveal the multiple ingredients and multiple targets of SCF and focus on one pathway (estrogen signaling pathway) may be a novel therapeutic strategy for psoriasis treatment of herbal medicine.

Gut microbiota-based discovery of Houttuyniae Herba as a novel prebiotic of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron with anti-colitis activity

Ulcerative colitis (UC) represents an inflammatory disease characterized by fluctuations in severity, posing substantial challenges in treatment. The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of UC. This study sought to identify drugs specifically targeting the gut microbiota to mitigate UC. We initiated a meta-analysis on gut microbiota in UC patients to identify UC-associated bacterial strains. Subsequently, we screened 164 dietary herbal medicines in vitro to identify potential prebiotics for the UC-associated bacterium, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron. The DSS-induced colitis mouse model was utilized to evaluate the anti-colitis efficacy of the identified dietary herbal medicine. Full-length 16 S rRNA amplicon sequencing was employed to observe changes in gut microbiota following dietary herbal medicine intervention. The relative abundance of Bacteroides was notably diminished in UC patients compared to their healthy counterparts. B. thetaiotaomicron exhibited an inverse relationship with UC symptoms, indicating its potential as an anti-colitis agent. In vitro assessments revealed that H. Herba significantly bolstered the proliferation of B. thetaiotaomicron. Further experiments showed that treating DSS-induced mice with an aqueous extract of H. Herba considerably alleviated colitis indicators such as weight loss, colon shortening, disease activity score (DAI), and systemic inflammation. Microbial analysis revealed B. thetaiotaomicron as the sole bacterium substantially augmented by H. Herba in vivo. Overall H. Herba emerges as a promising prebiotic for B. thetaiotaomicron, offering significant anti-colitis benefits. Employing a gut microbiota-centric approach proves valuable in the quest for drug discovery.This study provides a new paradigm for drug discovery that targets the gut microbiota to treat UC.

The Role of Different Medicinal Herbs in Treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Review

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS/PCOD) indicates a common, multifactorial endocrine condition marked by polycystic ovaries, chronic anovulation, and hyperandrogenism, resulting in asymmetric menstrual periods, hirsutism, acne, and infertility. Standard treatment for PCOS is often accompanied by adverse effects, and is ineffective in certain situations, refutation-based medical guidance accented an integrative progress. Furthermore, women suffering from PCOS may benefit from alternative treatments. Herbal treatment includes herbs that have a phytoestrogenic and non-estrogenic nature, including Mentha spicata, Panax ginseng, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Aloe barbadensis, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Matricaria chamomilla, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Linum usitatissimum, and Zingiber officinale, which are effective and safe. This review focuses on the reproductive endocrine effects of phytomedicine as a choice treatment so as to PCOD and accompanying oligo/amenorrhoea, acne, hirsutism, and infertility.

Topical Chinese Herbal Medicine Treatment of a Non-healing Leg Wound in a Horse: A Case Report

Wound care in horses, particularly chronic non-healing lesions, pose a major medical challenge for equine practitioners and can result in considerable financial loss as well as missed training goals for owners. The lower equine limb is particularly susceptible to damage due to the lack of protective muscling and superficial synovial and tendinous structures. This paper presents the treatment of a non-healing distal leg wound in a horse by topical application of a Chinese herbal medicine decoction using a traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) approach. The patient had sustained damage to the palmar aspect of the flexor tendons on the left thoracic limb caused by jumping off a transport vehicle. This injury was initially treated by cleaning the area, topical erythromycin antibiotic ointment and intramuscular injection of penicillin for 3 days. Over a 2-month period the initial trauma progressed to a chronic non-healing wound. Medical management of the wound was then changed to topical application of a Chinese herbal decoction which was applied 3 times daily. Over a 29-day period, this treatment encouraged normalization of the wound healing process with epithelization, tissue remodeling and normal scar formation. The clinical results achieved in this horse suggest topical treatment with Chinese herbal medicine can decrease complications and speed the healing process of chronic wounds. The use of the topical herbal formula in this case was convenient, simple to use, and cost effective.

TCVM Treatment of the Subfertile Mare

The treatment of reproductive disorders and the promotion of fertility represent cornerstones of the equine and bovine industries. Along with conventional medical treatments, the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has been used to treat reproductive problems for thousands of years in humans, is showing increasing potential through evidence-based studies to treat infertility in animals. In this article, a traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) approach to treatment of infertility in the mare will be presented. Discussion of common TCVM infertility patterns in the sub-fertile mare such as Kidney Qi and Blood Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency will be explored. Review of research studies substantiating evidence-based efficacy of TCVM techniques along with practical tips for acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment for infertility will also be presented.

Socio-demographic Influences to Ethnobotanical Knowledge among the Residents of Mt. Kitanglay at Initao, Misamis Oriental

A descriptive research design was conducted through purposive samplingto document the socio-demographic information in relation to ethnobotanical knowledge among the residents of Mt. Kitanglay, Initao, Misamis Oriental. A participatory community discussion (PCD) was used as the research tool with some modification such as asking the basic socio-demographic information of the participants. Sampling areas were at Brgy. Aluna (S1), Brgy. Kamelon (S2) and Brgy. Tawantawan (S3) in the municipality of Initao. A total of 90 participants composed of mostly elders with experience in herbal medicine healing and treatment. Results show that majority of the participants are females, 40-49 years old, married with 5-7 children, elementary graduate, and farming as main livelihood with family monthly income of Php 9,000 to Php 11,000 and annual income of Php 25,000 to Php 30,000. The data concluded that the residents’ ethnobotanical knowledge is still present among them. However, it shows a relative decline of knowledge among the younger generation due to lack of interest and the presence of available synthetic medicines from local health centers. Hence, there is dire need to increase awareness among local constituents, government and scientific communities for the preservation of medicinal species and the ethnomedicinal knowledge in Mt. Kitanglay at Initao, Misamis Oriental.

This review explores the potential of integrating nano-delivery systems with traditional Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and Chinese medical theory. It highlights the intersections and potential of nano-delivery systems in enhancing the effectiveness of traditional herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments. In addition, it discusses how the integration of nano-delivery systems with Chinese medical theory can modernize herbal medicine and make it more readily accessible on a global scale. Finally, it analyzes the challenges and future directions in this field.

Herbal Medicine for Sarcopenia: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Objectives: Sarcopenia is an age-associated skeletal muscle disorder that can profoundly impact the health of elderly people. However, the efficacy of herbal medicine in sarcopenia is uncertain. This review aims to investigate evidence of the effect of herbal medicine on sarcopenia.Methods: We systematically searched 12 electronic databases for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Only trials that met the inclusion criteria were selected, and the characteristics of the included studies were extracted and synthesized in a narrative manner. The quality of the included studies was assessed using Cochrane’s Risk of Bias (RoB) 2.0 tool.Results: 7 RCTs involving 672 participants with sarcopenia met the inclusion criteria. The intervention combining herbal medicine and conventional treatment (i.e., exercise, nutritional support) had a significant therapeutic effect compared with the conventional treatment, showing improvement in muscle strength (i.e., grip strength), muscle mass (i.e., appendicular skeletal muscle mass index), and physical function (i.e., gait speed, short physical performance battery, and timed up and go test). However, the methodological quality of the included RCTs was relatively low due to their high RoB, making it difficult to evaluate the efficacy of herbal medicine in sarcopenia. In terms of safety, several adverse events were reported.Conclusion: This review suggests that herbal medicine has a positive effect on muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance in elderly patients with sarcopenia, but there is a clear need for further research in this area.

A Review of Recent Domestic Research on Herbal Medicine Treatments for Ulcerative Colitis: A Focus on OASIS Platform Research

Objectives: This study analyzes domestic research trends on herbal medicine treatments for ulcerative colitis (UC) by examining 28 selected domestic papers using the Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching System (OASIS) as the main search source.Methods: A total of 28 domestic papers were selected on the OASIS platform as the main search source using the keywords “(궤양성 대장염) or (궤양성 대장병)" and “(한약) or (한의학)”.Results: There were 11 case report studies and 17 case-control studies published from 2002 to 2022. All the case-control studies only dealt with mice and did not include human subjects. The most common pathologies were damp heat and Changpung. Hwangryunhaedok-tang was the most frequently prescribed herbal formula, and Coptidis Rhizoma was the most commonly used herb across all studies. The results showed that many studies demonstrated the significant effects of herbal treatment.Conclusion: Herbal medicine may exhibit therapeutic effects on various aspects of UC. However, evidence-based studies, such as clinical trials involving human subjects, are needed.

Anti-Hepatitis C virus activity of Garcinia lattissima Miq. stem barks methanol exctract

Herbal medicine treatment for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is a promising alternative to common medical HCV treatments because it has low unwanted side effects and production costs. This study aimed to evaluate the methanol extract of Garcinia lattissima stem barks as an antiviral compound against strain JFH1 (HCV) genotype 2a. Garcinia lattissima stem bark methanolic extract (GL-SB) was added to Huh7it-1 cells infected with JFHI. Anti HCV activity was determined by Focus-forming unit (FFU) assay and the cytotoxicity activity was analyzed using the 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) assay. The GL-SB showed its efficacy as the anti-HCV agent with a 50% cytotoxicity concentration (CC50) of 34.2 µg/mL and a 50% effective concentration (EC50) of 4.7 µg/mL. The co-addition and post-infection phases of GL-SB showed an anti-HCV activity, according to a time-of-addition investigation. These findings imply that GL-SB might be a promising candidate for add-on therapy in the treatment of HCV infections.

Utilization and Effectiveness of Herbal Medicine in Treatment of Malaria in Osun State

Concern among health professionals has been raised by the ongoing rise in the prevalence of malaria in recent years. Herbal treatments have been deemed the most popular form of traditional medicine in Africa and a high percentage used it for malaria treatment. Poor health care services with unaffordable malaria have been a major barrier to malaria control. This study investigated the use and effectiveness of traditional medicine in treatment of malaria in Osun State, Nigeria. 15 people with malaria across the three senatorial districts of Osun State were selected, using snow balling sampling techniques. Experimental design was utilised to assess the level of knowledge on malaria. Descriptive survey was used to assess the use of traditional medicine, and true experiments to test efficacy of herbal medicine. This study found that respondents have inadequate knowledge of traditional medicine for treatment of malaria and lack adequate knowledge that anopheles mosquito cause malaria. However, use of traditional medicine is high among respondents, with most of the listed herbs achieving a significant point for mean (2.5). Majority of respondents either have malaria parasites hibernated and experience malaria relapse later or the herbal medicine used were ineffective in the first place. The effectiveness of these combined herbs is also dependent on the intensity of the malaria infection. The study concluded that traditional medicine is effective among just in a few of the respondents, who combined, prepared herbs appropriately and took it as prescribed by experienced herbs experts. Knowledge, Perception and Utilization of Herbal Medicine in Treatment of Malaria in Southwestern Nigeria

Malaria control has been a challenge around the world for decades. In malaria endemic nations like Sub-Saharan Africa, traditional herbal medicine is the most common option for treating malaria. About 80% of the world's population relies on the use of herbal medicine to treat a variety of diseases, and the use of plant materials in the treatment of illnesses has continuously expanded. This study sought to assess the level of knowledge and attitudes towards the use of traditional medicine in the treatment of malaria in southwest Nigeria. Descriptive design and multistage sampling techniques were utilised. During the first stage, three States were chosen through a balloting process utilising random sampling methods. Four (4) sections of the questionnaire were used to collect sociodemographic data and other factors that were important to the achievement of the given objectives. The findings revealed that 31.7% of the respondents had inadequate knowledge about traditional medicine for treatment of malaria. 20.8% had positive perceptions to the common herbal medicines used in the treatment of malaria. Majority stated malaria is not a serious disease to be concerned about, and that traditional medicine is superior to modern medicine. Conclusively, the results highlighted the respondent’s lack knowledge on the consequences of traditional medicine. A strong correlation between traditional medicine uses and perception in the treatment of malaria in southwest Nigeria was also discovered. The result of the study prompted a recommendation that the public health department of the ministry of health need to intensify campaign against use of unapproved herbs for treatment of malaria. Qualified placebo for trials of herbal medicine treatment in rare diseases? A cross-sectional analysis

BackgroundWhile substantial placebos have been used in herbal medicine (HM) clinical trials for rare diseases, the use and quality of reporting of HM-placebo remain unclear. We aim to describe the use of HM-placebo in clinical trials for rare diseases and determine the quality of reporting in these trials.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang database, China Science and Technology Journal Database, National Institute of Informatics Support Academic Information Services, ClinicalTrials.gov and Chinese Clinical Trials Registry from their inception date to 14 February 2023 to identify registered and published trials that use placebos as a comparator in rare diseases. We collected data on placebo use reporting and the efficacy and safety of placebo. Descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and Binary multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to determine the placebo characteristics of the HM trial and its effect on reporting.ResultsAmong the 55 studies, we included that with a median administration time of placebo of 84 days (IQR 42–180) and a median placebo sample size of 30 (IQR 24–54). About half of the trials (27, 49.1%) did not provide their ethical approvals, and one trial had details of informed consent. None of the studies were fully reported and more than half of the items reported less than 50%. A total of 10 trials (18.2%) of placebo has active ingredients even though none of them performed pharmacological inert tests. Of the 29 studies with available data on adverse events, 5 (17.2%) trials did not show a better safety profile in the placebo group. Under the context that a relatively high-quality report is defined as a report with more than 9 items, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the rate of relatively high-quality reports of the administration time (p = 0.047, OR 0.10, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.90), but the results are not representative.ConclusionThe overall situation of HM-placebo in the field of rare diseases was poor. In particular, the placebo is tied to the quality of trials, and poor placebo hinders the generation of high-quality evidence for herbal clinical trials in the field of rare diseases. We summarize the current methods of assessment involved in the use of placebos and propose various considerations for placebos in different contexts. Our study can greatly promote rare disease researchers to review the quality of their placebo and clinical trials. It is imperative to guarantee that meticulously conducted research generates clinical evidence of the highest caliber. We also expect that in the future, more rigorous relevant standards about the reporting and design of HM-placebo will be developed. High-quality clinical trials are the prerequisite for the wide clinical application of herbal medicines for rare diseases.

Almond (Prunus amygdalus L.): A source of revitalizing health and its therapeutic application

Nature is the source of some exquisite food products, having a wondrous amalgam of beneficial bioactive compounds with diverse health effects, often unattainable in synthetic products. Almond is a one of the valuable health benefiting food, from the Rosaceae family, have long been known as a source of essential nutrients; nowadays, they are in demand as a healthy food with increasing popularity for the general population and producers. They are native to the region which extends from India to Persia; the almond tree had spread to east and west of its native region thousands of years before Christ. Bitter and sweet almond are its types. It consists of Kernel or meat, mid shell and outer green shell. They are a rich source of vitamin E, dietary fiber, B-vitamins, proteins, calcium, magnesium, mono-unsaturated fats and phytosterols. This is also one of the classical Unani drugs prescribed by Hakeems in different body ailments. In Unani literature, it is mainly described as Muqawwī-i-dimāgh (Brain tonic), Murattib-i-dimāgh (Brain demulcent), Mulayyin (Laxative), Muqawwī-i-bāh (Aphrodisiac) and Mughadhdhi (Nutritious) etc. This is a review paper which discuss morphology, pharmacological action, ethno-medicinal and therapeutic uses of this medicinal plant in perspective of Unani medicine. This review has been done through online searches of databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, science direct and hand search for classical textbook available in libraries. It concluded that Almond is one of the best herbal medicines in treatment of Palpitation, Amnesia, Hyperlipidemic, Sexual Debility, Dysmenorrhea, as it possess the following properties Antidiabetic, Antifungal, Anticancer, Antioxidant, Antihypertensive, Anti-inflammatory, Immunity enhancer, Hepato-protective Neuro-protective.

A Case Report of Dizziness Diagnosed Dam Hun Treated with Korean Medicine in a Patient Hospitalized at a Korean Medicine Hospital

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report the efficacy of using Korean medicine treatment on dizziness diagnosed as Dam Hun.Methods: The patient received herbal medicine treatment of <i>Banhabakchulchunma-tang</i> and acupuncture from May 18, 2023 to June 3, 2023. To evaluate the treatment, we used the Korean Version of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (K-DHI) to measure dizziness. The degree of dizziness, headache, and dyspepsia was also evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).Results: The patient’s VAS scores improved after treatment. The change in the K-DHI scores showed that the patient’s dizziness symptoms were relieved.Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that Korean medicine therapies may be effective for treating dizziness.

A Case Report of Abdominal Pain with Acute Kidney Injury and Elevated Pancreatic Enzymes

Objectives: The aim of this study is to report the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicine treatment for abdominal pain with acute kidney injury.Methods: A 80-year-old female patient presented with abdominal pain. Blood test results showed increased blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, amylase, and lipase. The patient was treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine, specifically <i>Hyangsayukgunja-tang-gahwangryeon</i> for 4 days and <i>Gagam-gunbi-tang</i> for 11 days. Gastrointestinal symptoms were assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale, Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, and abdominal examination.Results: Gastrointestinal symptoms improved after taking Korean herbal medicine. Additionally, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, amylase, and lipase levels showed improvement compared to values before treatment.Conclusions: Korean medicine treatment can improve clinical symptoms without damaging the kidneys of patients with acute kidney injuries.
