Impact of organic carbon on heavy metals of river sediments and aquatic ecosystems: A review

AbstractOrganic carbon with variable chemical composition sourced primarily from terrestrial and aquatic biogenic input has a significant impact on sediment heavy metal mobility. The present scientific view is unclear in deciphering the role of labile organic carbon in changing sediment heavy metal concentration. The present review critically assesses the impact of various forms of carbon on different geochemically bound heavy metal fractions and their monitoring. It is evident from the review that, the biochemical form of organic carbon (based on degradability and biopolymeric forms), carbon‐geochemical association, and density of organic carbon (light or heavy carbon fractions) plays an important role in determining the bioavailability and toxicity of metals for aquatic organisms. Besides the organic carbon, various sediment conditions that define the behavior of heavy metals include pH, redox condition, sulfide concentration, salinity, temperature, etc. Therefore, it is recommended that carbon relation with heavy metal mobility and stability should be included under long‐term sediment management plans to maintain the sediment quality of the river system.

Effect of humic substances on the fraction of heavy metal and microbial response

Contamination of soils by Molybdenum (Mo) has raised increasing concern worldwide. Both fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) possess numerous positive properties, such as large specific surface areas and microporous structure that facilitates the immobilization of the heavy metal in soils. Despite these characteristics, there have been few studies on the microbiology effects of FA and HA. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the Mo immobilization effects of FA and HA, as well as the associated changes in microbial community in Mo-contaminated soils (with application rates of 0%, 0.5% and 1.0%). The result of the incubation demonstrated a decrease in soil pH (from 8.23 ~ 8.94 to 8.05 ~ 8.77). Importantly, both FA and HA reduced the exchangeable fraction and reducible fraction of Mo in the soil, thereby transforming Mo into a more stable form. Furthermore, the application of FA and HA led to an increase in the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Firmicutes, resulting in alterations to the microbial community structure. However, it is worth noting that due to the differing structures and properties of FA and HA, these outcomes were not entirely consistent. In summary, the aging of FA and HA in soil enhanced their capacity to immobilization Mo as a soil amendment. This suggests that they have the potential to serve as effective amendments for the remediation of Mo-contaminated soils.

Temporal and spatial evolution of different heavy metal fractions and correlation with environmental factors after prolonged acid mine drainage irrigation: A column experiment

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has global significance due to its low pH and elevated heavy metal content, which have received widespread attention. After AMD irrigation in mining areas, heavy metals are distributed among soil layers, but the influencing factors and mechanisms remain unclear. AMD contamination of surrounding soil is primarily attributed to surface runoff and irrigation and causes significant environmental degradation. A laboratory soil column experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of the heavy metals Cd and Cu, as well as the impact of key environmental factors on the migration and transformation of these heavy metals following long-term soil pollution by AMD. After AMD addition, the soil exhibited a significant increase in acidity, accompanied by notable alterations in various environmental parameters, including soil pH, Eh, Fe(II) content, and iron oxide content. Over time, Cd and Cu in the soil mainly existed in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions. In spatial terms, exchangeable Cu increased with increasing depth. Pearson correlation analysis indicated significant negative correlations between pH and Cu, Cd, and Eh in pore water, as well as negative correlations between pH and the exchangeable fraction of Cd (F1), carbonate-bound fraction of Cd (F2), and exchangeable fraction of Cu (F1) in the solid phase. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between pH and the residual fraction of Cu (F5). Furthermore, the soil total Cd content exhibited a positive correlation with pyrophosphate-Fe (Fep) and dithionite-Fe (Fed), while CdF1, CdF2, total Cu, and CuF1 displayed positive correlations with Fep. Our findings indicate that the presence of AMD in soil leads to alterations in the chemical fractions of Cd and Cu, resulting in enhanced bioavailability. These results offer valuable insights for developing effective remediation strategies for soils near mining sites.

Historical construction, quantitative source identification and risk assessment of heavy metals contamination in sediments from the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Historical reconstruction of heavy metals (HMs) contamination in sediments is a key for understanding the effects of anthropogenic stresses on water bodies and predicting the variation trends of environmental state. In this work, eighteen sediment cores from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were collected to determine concentrations and geochemical fractions of HMs. Then, their potential sources and the relative contributions during different time periods were quantitatively identified by integrating lead-210 (210Pb) radioisotope dating technique into positive matrix factorisation (PMF) method. Pollution levels and potential ecological risks (PERs) caused by HMs were accurately assessed by enrichment factors (EF) based on establishment of their geochemical baselines (GCBs) and multiparameter evaluation index (MPE). HMs concentrations generally showed a particle size- and organic matter-dependent distribution pattern. During the period of 1958–1978, HMs concentrations remained at low levels with agricultural activities and natural processes being identified as the predominant sources and averagely contributing >60%. Since the reform and opening-up in 1978, industrial and traffic factors become the primary anthropogenic sources of HMs (such as Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni), averagely increasing from 22.1% to 28.1% and from 11.6% to 23.4%, respectively. Conversely, the contributions of agricultural and natural factors decreased from 37.0% to 28.5% and from 29.3% to 20.0%, respectively. Subsequently, implementation of environmental preservation policies was mainly responsible for the declining trend of HMs after 2010. Little enrichment of sediment Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Ni with EFs (0.15–1.43) was found in the PRE, whereas EFs of Cd (1.16–2.70) demonstrated a slight to moderate enrichment. MPE indices of Cu (50.7–252), Pb (52.0–147), Zn (35.5–130), Ni (19.6–71.5), Cr (14.2–68.8) and Cd (0–9.90) highlighted their potential ecological hazards due to their non-residual fractions and anthropogenic sources.

The admissible concentration limits have to be assessed due to the soil characteristics combination which determines heavily the concentration of heavy metal water-soluble fractions (efficient solubility of their deposits, effective constants of the ion exchange and effective constants of the complex instability). The correlation of water-soluble fractions of heavy metals depending on pH in the common black soils was: for Pb = -0,40; for Cd = -0,32; for Co = -0,39; for Ni = -0,47. The proportion of positively charged species not linked into complexes increases under the pollution augment in the soil. This way, PbL7PbL+ ratio was 0,33±0,01 in the check, under the pollution it was Pb - 0,08±0,01. Prediction models for bioavailability of Cu and Zn during composting: Insights into machine learning

Bioavailability assessment of heavy metals in compost products is crucial for evaluating associated environmental risks. However, existing experimental methods are time-consuming and inefficient. The machine learning (ML) method has demonstrated excellent performance in predicting heavy metal fractions. In this study, based on the conventional physicochemical properties of 260 compost samples, including compost time, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, organic matter (OM), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen, and total heavy metal contents, back propagation neural network, gradient boosting regression, and random forest (RF) models were used to predict the dynamic changes in bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn during composting. All three models could be used for effective prediction of the variation trend in bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn; the RF model showed the best prediction performance, with the prediction level higher than that reported in related studies. Although the key factors affecting changes among fractions were different, OM, EC, and TP were important for the accurate prediction of bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn. This study provides simple and efficient ML models for predicting bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn during composting, and offers a rapid evaluation method for the safe application of compost products.

High-efficiency combination washing agents with eco-friendliness simultaneously removing Cd, Cu and Ni from soil of e-waste recycling site: A lab-scale experiment

Soil washing technology plays an important role in the removal of heavy metals, and the efficacy of this process depends on the washing agent used. Due to the difficulty in treating soils contaminated by multiple heavy metals, there is still a need for further exploration of efficient washing agents with low environmental impact. Although single washing agents, such as chelators, can also effectively remove heavy metals from soil, combining efficient washing agents and determining their optimal washing conditions can effectively improve their removal efficiency for multiple heavy metals in soil simultaneously. Based on the previous research, the present study was carried out to combine different types of washing agents to remediate contaminated soils at a commonly e-waste recycling site. The objectives were to investigate their efficient washing conditions and assess the impact of the washing process on the speciation distribution and pollution level associated with heavy metals in soil. The results showed that the combination of HEDP (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid) and FeCl3 at a ratio of 6:4 exhibited the most effective removal of Cd, Cu and Ni from the contaminated soil at an e-waste recycling site. Under optimal washing conditions, with a soil-to-liquid ratio of 1:20 and a washing time of 48 h, the removal rates of Cd, Cu and Ni were 96.72%, 69.91% and 76.08%, respectively. It needed to be emphasized that the combination washing agents were able to remove most of the acid-soluble, reducible and oxidizable fractions of heavy metals, and even the removal rates of the stable residual fraction (e.g., of Cd) was at a relatively high level. In addition, the washing process significantly reduced the pollution level associated with heavy metals in soil. This study aid in the development of combined efficient washing agents and explores optimal washing strategies for the remediation of Cd, Cu, and Ni-contaminated soil at e-waste recycling sites. The findings may play a role in enhancing the remediation capabilities for soils contaminated with multiple heavy metals, due to its characteristics of and high-efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Speciation, mobility, and risks of heavy metals in sediment and water of a freshwater Lake in Fujian Province, China

ABSTRACT This study investigated the level of dissolved heavy metals in the water of Longhu Lake and focused on the speciation, mobility, and risks of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in sediment. The levels of heavy metals in the water were found to be below the thresholds set by the Chinese safe drinking water standard. The highest average percentages of Cr, Ni, Zn, and As were bound with residual fractions, while Pb and Cu were bound with reducible fractions. Additionally, the highest percentage of Cd and Mn was bound to the acid-soluble fraction in the sediment. These findings suggest that Cd, Mn, Pb, and Cu likely originated from anthropogenic sources in the lake. There was a strong correlation between total organic carbon (TOC) and metal fractions in the sediment, indicating that TOC may play a role in transporting heavy metal fractions. Risk assessment code values for Cd and Mn indicated higher risks and mobility, while Ni, Cu, and Zn showed medium risks and mobility for aquatic biota. To mitigate heavy metal contamination, it is recommended to improve monitoring and regulation of urban runoff and inlet areas.

Intensive ammonium fertilizer addition activates iron and carbon conversion coupled cadmium redistribution in a paddy soil under gradient redox conditions

While over-fertilization and nitrogen deposition can lead to the enrichment of nitrogen in soil, its effects on heavy metal fractions under gradient moisture conditions remains unclear. Here, the effect of intensive ammonium (NH4+) addition on the conversion and interaction of cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe) and carbon (C) was studied. At relatively low (30–80 %) water hold capacity (WHC) NH4+ application increased the carbonate bound Cd fraction (F2Cd), while at relatively high (80–100 %) WHC NH4+ application increased the organic matter bound Cd fraction (F4Cd). Iron‑manganese oxide bound Cd fractions (F3Cd) and oxalate-Fe decreased, but DCB-Fe increased in NH4+ treatments, indicating that amorphous Fe was the main carrier of F3Cd. The variations in F1Cd and F4Cd observed under the 100–30-100 % WHC treatment were similar to those observed under low moisture conditions (30–60 % WHC). The C=O/C-H ratio of organic matter in soil decreased under the 30–60 % WHC treatment, but increased under the 80–100 % WHC treatment, which was the dominant factor influencing F4Cd changes. The conversion of NH4+ declined with increasing soil moisture content, and the impact on oxalate-Fe was greater at 30–60 % WHC than at 80–100 % WHC. Correspondingly, genetic analysis showed the effect of NH4+ on Fe and C metabolism at 30–60 % WHC was greater than at 80–100 % WHC. Specifically, NH4+ treatment enhanced the expression of genes encoding extracellular Fe complexation (siderophore) at 30–80 % WHC, while inhibiting genes encoding Fe transmembrane transport at 30–60 % WHC, indicating that siderophores simultaneously facilitated Cd detoxification and Fe complexation. Furthermore, biosynthesis of sesquiterpenoid, steroid, butirosin and neomycin was significantly correlated with F4Cd, while glycosaminoglycan degradation metabolism and assimilatory nitrate reduction was significantly correlated with F2Cd. Overall, this study gives a more comprehensive insight into the effect of NH4+ on activated Fe and C conversion on soil Cd redistribution under gradient moisture conditions.

Research on the Transformation Mechanism of Soil Cadmium Fractions under the Conditions of Freeze-thaw and Crude Oil Contamination in Wetlands in the Songnen Plain, China

Environmental changes can significantly affect heavy metals behave in soil. Currently, we know little about the impact of crude oil contamination on heavy metal fractions in soil, with few studies available on heavy metal fraction transformation under the composite action of freeze-thaw and crude oil contamination. In this study, soil samples were collected from the Momoge Wetland in the Songnen Plain. Properties including pH, cation exchange capacity, calcium carbonate, free iron oxide, dissolved organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and cadmium (Cd) fractions under freeze-thaw, crude oil contamination, and the two combined (composite action) were analysed. The results show that under freeze-thaw, crude oil contamination, and composite action, soil properties changed significantly; soil water-soluble Cd content significantly increased by 54.17%, 62.50%, and 33.33% from control levels, respectively; soil ion-exchangeable Cd content decreased significantly by 10.90%, 23.73%, and 18.64% from control levels, respectively; soil residual Cd content significantly increased by 80.36%, 94.64%, and 132.14% from control levels, respectively; carbonate-bound, humic acid-bound, Fe-Mn oxide-bound, and strongly organic-bound Cd did not change significantly. Soil dissolved organic carbon, pH, CaCO3, and free iron oxide were significantly correlated with water-soluble, ion-exchangeable, carbonate-bound, and Fe-Mn oxide-bound Cd, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis for evaluating soil Cd behaves in crude oil contaminated wetlands in cold regions.

Remediation of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) in contaminated soil by KMnO4 modified biochar: Stabilization efficiency and effects of freeze–thaw ageing

Biochar has been widely used in soil remediation because of its porosity and impressive efficiency. Many studies have demonstrated the good affinity of biochar for heavy metals (HMs), but efficient modification methods to increase the stability of multiple HMs are lacking. Moreover, few studies focus on biochar’s potential ability to ageing resistance and changes in its physicochemical properties during freeze–thaw (F/T) cycles. Here, KMnO4-modification biochar (MBC) was prepared and the immobilization and anti-freeze performance of MBC on Cd, Zn and Pb in soil were investigated. The addition of 10 % MBC decreased concentrations of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) by 66.80 %, 25.39 % and 99.68 % for Cd, Zn and Pb, respectively, after 28 days, accompanied by a significant decrease in the phytoavailability and bioaccessibility of HMs in soil. Soil fertility was also improved by MBC application. Furthermore, frequent F/T cycles obviously induced the fragmentation of soil particles and enhanced the activity of HMs. Conversely, MBC particles became finer, accompanied by further oxidation and higher alkalinity but degraded pore structures during F/T cycles. The oxidation of lignocellulose and changes in C-O stretching were greatest among all functional groups in biochar. Therefore, MBC could suppress the migration of HMs through precipitation, cohesion of soil particles, and stronger complexation by oxygen-containing functional groups. Moreover, fractions of HMs were also transferred from exchangeable to potentially labile or nonlabile species. Overall, MBC displayed advantages in the stabilization of HMs and showed higher resistance to F/T cycles and promise for long-term remediation of HM-contaminated soils in cold regions.

Eisenia fetida-driven vermitechnology for the eco-friendly transformation of steel waste slag into organic amendment: An insight through microbial diversity and multi-model approach

The processing of steel waste slag from the black metallurgical sector seriously threatened the ecology. To counter these dangers, appropriate detoxification methods were required. Vermitechnology was one such strategy that could successfully convert this industrial waste into nutrient-rich products suitable for use in agriculture. This research primarily focuses on employing vermitechnology for the transformation of waste steel slag into vermicompost and to determine changes in microbial composition, nutrient cycling, and metal detoxification facilitated by earthworms (Eisenia fetida). Earthworm populations in steel waste vermibeds (sw-vermibeds) increased by 2.87–3.07 folds. T1(SW + CD-1:1) comparatively showed increased levels of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Microbial and enzymatic parameters were more pronounced in treatment T1. The findings of phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) diversity demonstrate microbial diversity and fatty acid composition. Based on PLFA Sobol Sensitivity Analysis (SSA), PUFA and cyclo were the most sensitive inputs to the presence of heavy metal (HMs) concentrations in SW. In accordance with Taylor-based modelling, R-tree, and Mars were the most trusted regression models for predicting HMs toxicity on microbes. The bioavailable metal fractions of HMs (Fe, Ni, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Cr) decreased by 61–83%. The correlation was performed for 0 and 90 days for metal microbial interactions r (0 days), [BSR vs Fe, Cd, Cu, Ni = −0.99, −0.82, −0.43, −0.99] and r (90 days), [FDA vs Fe, Cu, Ni = −0.97, −0.47, −0.95]. Overall, the results indicated that T1(1:1 SW + CD) provided more favorable conditions for the development of microbes and Eisenia fetida. This research presents a new perspective to the world community on the transformation of harmful steel waste slag into advantageous biological resources by introducing a novel method of employing Eisenia fetida to remediate hazardous steel waste slag.

Revealing soil microbial ecophysiological indicators in acidic environments laden with heavy metals via predictive modeling: Understanding the impacts of black diamond excavation

Appraising the activity of soil microbial community in relation to soil acidity and heavy metal (HM) content can help evaluate it's quality and health. Coal mining has been reported to mobilize locked HM in soil and induce acid mine drainage. In this study, agricultural soils around coal mining areas were studied and compared to baseline soils in order to comprehend the former's effect in downgrading soil quality. Acidity as well as HM fractions were significantly higher in the two contaminated zones as compared to baseline soils (p < 0.01). Moreover, self-organizing and geostatistical maps show a similar pattern of localization in metal availability and soil acidity thereby indicating a causal relationship. Sobol sensitivity, cluster, and principal component analyses were employed to enunciate the relationship between the various metal and acidity fractions with that of soil microbial properties. The results indicate a significant negative impact of metal bioavailability, and acidity on soil microbial activity. Lastly, Taylor diagrams were employed to predict soil microbial quality and health based on soil physicochemical inputs. The efficiency of several machine learning algorithms was tested to identify Random Forrest as the best model for prediction. Thus, the study imparts knowledge about soil pollution parameters, and acidity status thereby projecting soil quality which can be a pioneer in sustainable agricultural practices.

Exploring the primary magnetic parameters affecting chemical fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in lake sediment through an interpretable workflow

The magnetic properties of lake sediments account for close relationships with heavy metal(loid)s (HMs), but little is known about their relationships with chemical fractions (CFs) of HMs. Establishing an effective workflow to predict HMs risk among various machine learning (ML) methods in conjunction with magnetic measurement remains challenging. This study evaluated the simulation efficiency of nine ML methods in predicting the risk assessment code (RAC) and ratio of the secondary and primary phases (RSP) of HMs with magnetic parameters in sediment cores of a shallow lake. The sediment cores were collected and sliced, and the total amount and CFs of HMs, as well as magnetic parameters, were determined. Support vector machine (SVM) outperformed other models, as evidenced by coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.8. Interpretable machine learning (IML) methods were employed to identify key indicators of RAC and RSP among the magnetic parameters. Values of χARM, HIRM, χARM/χ, and χARM/SIRM of sediments ranging in 220–500 × 10−8 m3/kg, 30–40 × 10−5Am2/kg, 15–25, and 0.5–1, respectively, indicated the potential ecological risks of Cd, Hg, and Sb. This study offers new perspectives on the risk assessment of HMs in lake sediments by combining magnetic measurement with IML workflow.

Pollution and mobility of heavy metals in the soils of a typical agricultural zone in eastern China.

The pollution of heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural soils profoundly threatens national food safety, and the mobility and environmental behaviors of HMs are closely implicated in crop safety. Here, we assessed the pollution level and mobility of ten HMs and explored their environmental behaviors in the soils of three different land uses from a main crop production zone in eastern China. The concentrations of HMs in the soils were higher in the farmland than the woodland and wasteland, and Cd showed a relatively higher pollution and ecological risk levels compared to other metals. Cadmium was dominated by the reducible (41%) and exchangeable (23%) fractions, and the rest of HMs were mainly in the residual fraction (> 60%). The significant correlation between the exchangeable and DGT-labile Cd indicates relatively higher mobility of Cd in the soils. Soil pH, organic matters and mineral elements had significant correlation with the exchangeable and reducible fractions of most of the HMs (e.g., Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Pb and V; p < 0.05), indicating their good predictors of the HMs mobility. However, this was not the case for the DGT-labile fraction, which suggests a marked difference in the controlling mechanisms of the mobility versus potential bioavailability of HMs in the soils. The results of this study indicate that both the chemically extracted fractions and the bioavailable fractions of HMs need be considered when effectively assessing the safety of agricultural soils.

Microscopic insights into acid corrosion effects on chelated MSW incineration fly ash: Mechanisms of chelate destabilization

Sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (SDD) is commonly applied to mitigate the release of heavy metals (HMs) into the environment from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (IFA). Despite this common application, limited research has been conducted on the impact of environmental conditions on chelate destabilization during long-term landfilling. In this study, a batch leaching test was performed on chelated IFA buried for 10 years, revealing that the leaching concentrations of Pb and Cd exceeded landfill standards by 51.7% and 26.0%, respectively, indicating the chelate destabilization occurrence. To elucidate this phenomenon, various physicochemical experiments were conducted to unveil the underlying mechanisms emphasizing changes in HMs fractions (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu) under acidic corrosion, and exploring the microscopic perspective of the chelate destabilization process. The key findings were summarized as follows: (I) The immobilization effect of SDD on Zn and Cd was not highly effective, with most of these metals being fixed on IFA through inorganic complexes. Theses HMs destabilization showed a negative correlation with the pH levels, indicating that higher acidity facilitated the release of HMs (59.0 mg/kg for Zn and 5.8 mg/kg for Cd). (II) After exposure to acid corrosion, the stable fraction of HMs decreased, because HM-SDD complexes decomposed into inorganic salts and carbon disulfide. This process further exacerbates the transporting effect of HMs on chelated IFA, thereby increasing the long-term leaching risk. (Ⅲ) A leaching equilibrium of HMs existed at the IFA surface, primarily influenced by the types and concentrations of anions in the leachate. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the stability of chelated IFA and provides valuable insights into the long-term environmental implications of such materials in landfill settings.

Assessing the chronic effect of the bioavailable fractions of radionuclides and heavy metals on stream microbial communities: A case study at the Rophin mining site

This study aimed to assess the potential impact of long-term chronic exposure (69 years) to naturally-occurring radionuclides (RNs) and heavy metals on microbial communities in sediment from a stream flowing through a watershed impacted by an ancient mining site (Rophin, France). Four sediment samples were collected along a radioactivity gradient (for 238U368 to 1710 Bq.Kg−1) characterized for the presence of the bioavailable fractions of radionuclides (226Ra, 210Po), and trace metal elements (Th, U, As, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe).Results revealed that the available fraction of contaminants was significant although it varied considerably from one element to another (0 % for As and Th, 5–59 % for U). Nonetheless, microbial communities appeared significantly affected by such chronic exposure to (radio)toxicities. Several microbial functions carried by bacteria and related with carbon and nitrogen cycling have been impaired. The high values of fungal diversity and richness observed with increasing downstream contamination (H′ = 4.4 and Chao1 = 863) suggest that the community had likely shifted toward a more adapted/tolerant one as evidenced, for example, by the presence of the species Thelephora sp. and Tomentella sp. The bacterial composition was also affected by the contaminants with enrichment in Myxococcales, Acidovorax or Nostocales at the most contaminated points.Changes in microbial composition and functional structure were directly related to radionuclide and heavy metal contaminations, but also to organic matter which also significantly affected, directly or indirectly, bacterial and fungal compositions. Although it was not possible to distinguish the specific effects of RNs from heavy metals on microbial communities, it is essential to continue studies considering the available fraction of elements, which is the only one able to interact with microorganisms.

Exploring metal(loid)s dynamics and bacterial community shifts in contaminated paddy soil: Impact of MgO-laden biochar under different water conditions

In this study, a soil incubation experiment was conducted to explore the influence MgO-treated corn straw biochar (MCB) on the bioavailability and chemical forms of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As), alongside the impact on the bacterial community within paddy soil subjected to both flooded and non-flooded conditions. Raw corn straw biochar (CB) served as the unmodified biochar control, aiding in the understanding of the biochar's role within the composite. The results showed that even at a minimal concentration of 0.5 %, MCB exhibited higher effectiveness in reducing the bioavailability of Pb and Cd compared to 1 % CB. In non-flooded conditions, 0.5 % MCB reduced the bioavailable Pb and Cd by 99.7 % and 87.4 %, respectively, while NaH2PO4-extracted As displayed a 14.5 % increase. With increasing MCB concentrations (from 0.5 % to 1.5 %), soil pH, DOC, EC, available phosphorus, and bioavailable As increased, while bioavailable Pb and Cd exhibited declining tendencies. Flooding did not notably alter MCB's role in reducing Pb and Cd bioavailability, yet it systematically amplified As release. Heavy metal fractions extracted by acetic acid increased in the MCB groups under flooding conditions, especially for As. The inclusion of 0.5 % MCB did not noticeably affect bacterial diversity, whereas higher doses led to reduced diversity and substantial changes in community composition. Specifically, the groups with MCB showed an increase in the Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria phyla, accompanied by a decrease in Acidobacteria. These alterations were primarily attributed to the increased pH and EC resulting from MgO hydrolysis. Consequently, for Pb/Cd stabilization and soil bacterial diversity, a low dosage of MgO-treated biochar is recommended. However, caution is advised when employing MgO-treated biochar in soils with elevated arsenic levels, particularly under flooded conditions.

Effect of Phanerochaete chrysosporium induced phosphate precipitation on bacterial diversity during the soil remediation process.

Biomineralization by phosphate minerals and phosphate solubilizing fungi (PSF) has attracted great interest as a novel remediation method for heavy metal(loid) co-contaminated soil. It was very essential to investigate the microenvironment response with the application of amendments. In this study, three grain sizes of hydroxyapatites (HAP) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) were used to investigate the change in heavy metal(loid) fractions, soil physicochemical properties, and bacterial community during the remediation of Mangchang and Dabaoshan acidic mine soils. The results showed that the residual fractions in the two soils increased significantly after 35 days of remediation, especially that of As and Zn in Dabaoshan soils were presented at over 87%. In addition, soil pH, organic matter (OM), and available phosphorous (AP) were almost improved. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis indicated that the introduction of culture medium and P. chrysosporium alone changed bacterial abundance, but the addition of HAP changed the bacterial diversity and community composition by altering environmental conditions. The amendments in the research showed good performance on immobilizing heavy metal(loid)s and reducing their bioavailability. Moreover, the research suggested that environmental factors and soil inherent properties could influence the microbial community structure and composition.

Effect and potential mechanisms of sludge-derived chromium, nickel, and lead on soil nitrification: Implications for sustainable land utilization of digested sludge

Increasing occurrence of heavy metals (HMs) in sewage sludge threatens its widespread land utilization in China due to its potential impact on nutrient cycling in soil, requiring a better understanding of HM-induced impacts on nitrification. Herein, lab-scale experiments were conducted over 185-day, evaluating the effect of sludge-derived chromium (Cr3+), nickel (Ni2+), and lead (Pb2+) on soil nitrification at different concentrations. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and linear regression results revealed an inhibitory sequence of gene abundance by HMs’ labile fraction: ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB)-ammonia monooxygenase (amoA)> nitrite oxidoreductase subunit alpha (nxrA)> nitrite oxidoreductase subunit beta (nxrB). The toxicity of HMs’ incremental labile fraction decreased in the order of Ni2+>Cr3+>Pb2+, with respective threshold values of 5.01, 24.03 and 38.42 mg·kg−1. Furthermore, extending incubation time reduced HMs inhibition on ammonia oxidation, mainly related to their fraction bound to carbonate minerals. Random Forest analysis, variation partitioning analysis, and Mantel test indicated that soil physicochemical properties primarily affected nitrification genes, especially in the test of Cr3+ on AOB-amoA, nxrA, nxrB, Ni2+ for complete ammonia-oxidizing bacteria-amoA, and Pb2+ for nxrA and nxrB. These findings underline the importance of labile HMs fractions and soil physicochemical properties to nitrification, guiding the establishment of HM control standards for sludge utilization.
