Phytohormones-mediated strategies for mitigation of heavy metals toxicity in plants focused on sustainable production.

In this manuscript, authors reviewed and explore the information on beneficial role of phytohormones to mitigate adverse effects of heavy metals toxicity in plants. Global farming systems are seriously threatened by heavy metals (HMs) toxicity, which can result in decreased crop yields, impaired food safety, and negative environmental effects. A rise in curiosity has been shown recently in creating sustainable methods to reduce HMs toxicity in plants and improve agricultural productivity. To accomplish this, phytohormones, which play a crucial role in controlling plant development and adaptations to stress, have emerged as intriguing possibilities. With a particular focus on environmentally friendly farming methods, the current review provides an overview of phytohormone-mediated strategies for reducing HMs toxicity in plants. Several physiological and biochemical activities, including metal uptake, translocation, detoxification, and stress tolerance, are mediated by phytohormones, such as melatonin, auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, ethylene, abscisic acid, salicylic acid, and jasmonates. The current review offers thorough explanations of the ways in which phytohormones respond to HMs to help plants detoxify and strengthen their resilience to metal stress. It is crucial to explore the potential uses of phytohormones as long-term solutions for reducing the harmful effects of HMs in plants. These include accelerating phytoextraction, decreasing metal redistribution to edible plant portions, increasing plant tolerance to HMs by hormonal manipulation, and boosting metal sequestration in roots. These methods seek to increase plant resistance to HMs stress while supporting environmentally friendly agricultural output. In conclusion, phytohormones present potential ways to reduce the toxicity of HMs in plants, thus promoting sustainable agriculture.

Nano-Priming for Inducing Salinity Tolerance, Disease Resistance, Yield Attributes, and Alleviating Heavy Metal Toxicity in Plants

In today’s time, agricultural productivity is severely affected by climate change and increasing pollution. Hence, several biotechnological approaches, including genetic and non-genetic strategies, have been developed and adapted to increase agricultural productivity. One of them is nano-priming, i.e., seed priming with nanomaterials. Thus far, nano-priming methods have been successfully used to mount desired physiological responses and productivity attributes in crops. In this review, the literature about the utility of nano-priming methods for increasing seed vigor, germination, photosynthetic output, biomass, early growth, and crop yield has been summarized. Moreover, the available knowledge about the use of nano-priming methods in modulating plant antioxidant defenses and hormonal networks, inducing salinity tolerance and disease resistance, as well as alleviating heavy metal toxicity in plants, is reviewed. The significance of nano-priming methods in the context of phytotoxicity and environmental safety has also been discussed. For future perspectives, knowledge gaps in the present literature are highlighted, and the need for optimization and validation of nano-priming methods and their plant physiological outcomes, from lab to field, is emphasized.

Melatonin alleviates Hg toxicity by modulating redox homeostasis and the urea cycle in moss

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic metal and can cause severe damage to many organisms under natural conditions. As an effective free radical scavenger and antioxidant, Melatonin (MT) has played important protective roles in alleviating oxidative damage caused by environmental cues including heavy metal stress in plants. However, the detailed mechanisms of melatonin in alleviating Hg toxicity still remain unclear in plants. Our results showed that the application of melatonin greatly reduced the concentrations of total and intracellular Hg in Taxiphyllum taxirameum. Meanwhile, melatonin significantly improved the antioxidant capacity and thus alleviated oxidative damage to the chloroplasts of T. taxirameum under Hg stress. Metabolic pathway analysis further revealed that melatonin-treated plants exhibited higher levels of 48 metabolites, including sugars, amino acids, and lipids, than non-melatonin-treated plants under Hg stress. Additionally, we further found that melatonin addition greatly improved the concentrations of four organic acids and three amino acids (Orn, Cit and Arg) related to the urea cycle, and thereby changed the levels of putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd) in T. taxirameum exposed to Hg stress. Further experiments showed that the high concentration of Put dramatically caused oxidative damage under Hg stress, while Spd effectively alleviated Hg toxicity in T. taxirameum. Taken together, this study provides new insight into the underlying mechanisms of melatonin in alleviating heavy metal toxicity in plants.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi as an effective approach to enhance the growth and metabolism of soybean plants under thallium (TI) toxicity

Thallium (TI) is a toxic metal that can trigger harmful impacts on growth and metabolism of plants. Utilizing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) proves to be an effective strategy for alleviating heavy metal toxicity in plants. To this end, AMF were applied to mitigate TI toxic effects on the growth, primary and secondary metabolism of soybean plants. Here, TI stress inhibited the growth and photosynthetic parameters of soybean plants. It also increased the oxidative damage as demonstrated by increased levels of oxidative markers, (MDA and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity). However, AMF could mitigate the reduction in growth and photosynthesis induced by TI, as well as the induction of oxidative damage. To overcome TI toxicity, AMF increased the levels and metabolism of osmolytes such as proline in soybean plants. This was in line with the increased activities of key enzymes that involved in proline biosynthesis (e.g., P5CS (pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase), P5CR (pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase) and OAT (ornithine aminotransferase) under the AMF and/or TI treatments. Furthermore, soybean plants could benefit from the synergism between AMF and TI to enhance the contents of individual (e.g., spermine and spermidine) and total polyamines as well as their metabolic enzymes (e.g., arginine decarboxylase and ornithine decarboxylase). Overall, the combined application of AMF emerges as a viable approach for alleviating TI toxicity in soybean plants.

Selenium-molybdenum interactions reduce chromium toxicity in Nicotiana tabacum L. by promoting chromium chelation on the cell wall

Chromium (Cr) is a hazardous heavy metal that negatively affects animals and plants. The micronutrients selenium (Se) and molybdenum (Mo) have been widely shown to alleviate heavy metal toxicity in plants. However, the molecular mechanism of Cr chelation on the cell wall by combined treatment with Se and Mo has not been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effects of Se-Mo interactions on the subcellular distribution of Cr (50 µM) and on cell wall composition, structure, functional groups and Cr content, in addition to performing a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptome. Our results showed that the cell walls of shoots and roots accumulated 51.0% and 65.0% of the Cr, respectively. Furthermore, pectin in the cell wall bound 69.5%/90.2% of the Cr in the shoots/roots. Se-Mo interactions upregulated the expression levels of related genes encoding galacturonosyltransferase (GAUT), UTP-glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase (UGP), and UDP-glucose-4-epimerase (GALE), involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis, thereby increasing pectin and cellulose levels. Moreover, combined treatment with Se and Mo increased the lignin content and cell wall thickness by upregulating the expression levels of genes encoding cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), peroxidase (POX) and phenylalanine amino-lyase (PAL), involved in lignin biosynthesis. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results showed that Se + Mo treatment (in combination) increased the number of carboxylic acid groups (-COOH) groups, thereby enhancing the Cr chelation ability. The results not only elucidate the molecular mechanism of action of Se-Mo interactions in mitigating Cr toxicity but also provide new insights for phytoremediation and food safety.

NPs-Ca promotes Cd accumulation and enhances Cd tolerance of rapeseed shoots by affecting Cd transfer and Cd fixation in pectin

The use of rapeseed (Brassica napus) as a hyperaccumulator plant has shown great promise for the remediation of cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils. Nanosized materials (NPs) have been shown to mitigate heavy metal toxicity in plants, but it is unknown how l-aspartate nano-calcium (NPs-Ca) affects Cd uptake, transport, and tolerance in rapeseed. A soil pot experiment was conducted with two treatments: a control treatment (CK) with 2.16 g CaCl2 and NPs-Ca treatment with 6.00 g NPs-Ca, to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of NPs-Ca on Cd tolerance in rapeseed. Compared to CaCl2, NPs-Ca promoted Cd transportation from roots to shoots by up-regulating the expression of Cd transport genes (ABCC12, HMA8, NRAM6, ZIP6, CAX4, PCR2, and HIP6). Therefore, NPs-Ca increased Cd accumulation in rapeseed shoots by 39.4%. Interestingly, NPs-Ca also enhanced Cd tolerance in the shoots, resulting in lower hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation and proline content, as well as higher antioxidant enzyme activities (POD, CAT). Moreover, NPs-Ca reduced the activity of pectin-degrading enzymes (polygalacturonase: PG, β-galactosidase: β-GAL), promoted the activity of pectin methyl esterase (PME), and changed transcription levels of related genes (PME, PMEI, PG, PGIP, and β-GAL). NPs-Ca treatment also significantly increased the Cd content in cell walls by 59.8%, that is, more Cd was immobilized in cell walls, and less Cd entered organelles in shoots of NPs-Ca treatment due to increased pectin content and degree of pectin demethylation. Overall, NPs-Ca increased Cd accumulation in rapeseed shoots by promoting Cd transport from roots to shoots. And meantime, NPs-Ca enhanced Cd tolerance of shoots by inhibiting pectin degradation, promoting pectin demethylation and increasing Cd fixation in pectin. These findings suggest that NPs-Ca can improve the potential of rapeseed as a hyperaccumulator for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil and the protection of the environment. Furthermore, the study provides a theoretical basis for the application of NPs-Ca in the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils with hyperaccumulating plants.

Responsible Mechanisms for the Restriction of Heavy Metal Toxicity in Plants via the Co-Foliar Spraying of Nanoparticles

Bamboo is nutritionally significant across the world because the shoots are high in calories and nutritional fiber but low in cholesterol. However, recent research has shown that bamboo shoots also contain a substantial quantity of heavy metals, including arsenic (As). Therefore, we explored whether the co-application of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) would attenuate As toxicity in bamboo plants (Pleioblastus pygmaeus). A greenhouse experiment was performed to investigate plant responses to arsenic toxicity. Bamboo plants exposed to four levels of As (0, 10, 20, and 40 mg L−1) were foliar-sprayed with 60 mg L−1 of Se-NPs and 60 mg L−1 of IONPs alone and in combination. The data indicated that different As concentrations (10, 20, and 40 mg L−1) caused membrane damage and reactive oxide species (ROS) production in bamboo cells, characterized by H2O2, O2•−, MDA, and EL increasing by up to 47%, 54%, 57%, and 65%, respectively, in comparison with a control. The co-application of 60 mg L−1 of Se-NPs + IONP markedly improved the antioxidant enzyme activities (by 75% in SOD, 27% in POD, 52% in CAT, 37% in GR, and 38% in PAL), total flavonoid content (42%), phenolic content (36%), proline (44%), nitric oxide (59%), putrescine (Put) (85%), spermidine (Spd) (53%), relative water content (RWC) (36%), photosynthetic characteristics (27%) in net photosynthesis (Pn) (24% in the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), 39% in stomatal conductance (Gs), and 31% in chlorophyll pigments), and ultimately biomass indices and growth. The co-application of Se-NPs + IONPs with 10 and 20 mg L−1 of As raised the TI by 14% and 9% in the shoot and by 18% and 14% in the root, respectively. IONPs and Se-NPs reduced ROS, cell membrane lipoperoxidation, and electrolyte leakage, all contributing to the decrease in oxidative stress by limiting As uptake and translocation. In sum, Se-NPs and IONPs improved bamboo endurance, yet the most effective approach for increasing bamboo’s ability to recover from As toxicity was the concurrent use of 60 mg L−1 of Se-NPs and 60 mg L−1 of IONPs. Our IONP and Se-NP data from single and combined applications offer novel knowledge in improving the tolerance mechanism against As exposure in Pleioblastus pygmaeus.

Metabolomics and transcriptomics reveal the toxic mechanism of Cd and nano TiO2 coexposure on rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) can resist heavy metal toxicity in plants, but their coexposure still exhibits toxicity to plants compared to plants without exposure to ENPs and heavy metals. There have been few studies on the toxic mechanism of nano TiO2-heavy metal coexposure and the effect mechanism of nano TiO2 in plants. Thus, transcriptomics and metabolomics were used to study the toxic mechanism of rutile nano TiO2 or TiO2-Cd (rutile nano TiO2 and CdCl2 mixture) on rice (Oryza sativa L.). After 40 days of exposure, the plant height and root dry weight of rice were significantly decreased in the nano TiO2-Cd group compared to the blank group (nano TiO2 and CdCl2 free). After Cd treatment, 423 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 16 differential metabolites were identified. Nano TiO2 exposure induced significant regulation of 299 DEGs and 6 metabolites. After nano TiO2-Cd coexposure, 1660 DEGs and 181 differential metabolites were identified. Notably, the EDGs (e.g., chalcone isomerase and hydroxycinnamoyl transferase) and differential metabolites (e.g., chrysin and galangin) demonstrated the disruption of flavonoid biosynthesis in Cd-treated rice. After rice was exposed to nano TiO2, the DEGs were related to ribosome, whereas the differential metabolites were associated with pyruvate metabolism and valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis. Furthermore, 14 DEGs (e.g., asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase and methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase) involved in aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthetic pathways were significantly upregulated in rice treated with nano TiO2-Cd, in line with the changes in related metabolites (e.g., L-asparagine and 10-formyltetrahydrofolate). Our results show that it is necessary to pay close attention to the toxicity of nano TiO2-Cd coexposure in paddy ecosystems and use ENPs with caution to combat the phytotoxicity of heavy metals.

Silicon modification improves biochar’s ability to mitigate cadmium toxicity in tomato by enhancing root colonization of plant-beneficial bacteria

Modification of biochar, such as impregnation with minerals, can improve biochar’s efficacy to mitigate heavy metal toxicity in plants. Biochar amendments can alter plant rhizosphere microbiome, which has profound effects on plant growth and fitness. Here, we tested whether rhizosphere microbiome is involved in the ability of silicon (Si)-modified biochar to mitigate cadmium toxicity in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). We demonstrated that Si modification altered biochar’s physico-chemical properties and enhanced its ability to mitigate cadmium toxicity in tomato. Particularly, the Si-modified biochar contained higher content of Si and increased plant-available Si content in the soil. The rhizosphere microbiome transplant experiment showed that changes in rhizosphere microbiome contributed to the mitigation of cadmium toxicity by biochar amendments. The raw biochar and Si-modified biochar differently altered tomato rhizosphere bacterial community composition. Both biochars, especially the Si-modified biochar, promoted specific bacterial taxa (e.g., Sphingomonas, Lysobacter and Pseudomonas spp.). Subsequent culturing found these promoted bacteria could mitigate cadmium toxicity in tomato. Moreover, both biochars stimulated tomato to recruit plant-beneficial bacteria with Si-modified biochar having stronger stimulatory effects, indicating that the positive effects of biochar on plant-beneficial bacteria was partially mediated via the host plant. Overall, Si modification enhanced biochar’s ability to mitigate cadmium toxicity, which was linked to the stimulatory effects on plant-beneficial bacteria.

The role of zinc to mitigate heavy metals toxicity in crops

Heavy metal (HM) contamination is a serious concern across the globe, and in recent times, HMs’ intensity has significantly increased, posing a serious threat to crop growth and productivity. Heavy metals pose serious health issues in humans by entering the human food chains. Therefore, it is direly needed to reduce the effects of HMs on plants and humans by adapting appropriate practices. In this context, application of micronutrients can be an essential practice to mitigate the toxic effects of HMs. Zinc (Zn) is a crucial nutrient needed for plant growth, and Zn application reduced the HM-induced toxicity in plants. This review highlights Zn’s role in mitigating the HMs toxicity in plants. We have systematically described the potential mechanisms mediated by Zn to mitigate HMs in plants. Zinc application reduced the HMs uptake and translocation plants, which is considered an essential mechanism of HM stress tolerance. Zn application also improves membrane stability, plant water relationship, nutrient uptake, photosynthetic performance, osmolytes accumulation, anti-oxidant activities, and gene expression. In addition to this, the Zn application substantially improves photosynthesis by enhancing the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, photosystem activities, enzymatic activities, and maintaining photosynthetic apparatus structure, ensuring better growth under HM stress. Therefore, Zn nutrition could improve the plant performance under HM stress by modulating the plant’s physiological and biochemical functioning, anti-oxidant activities, osmolytes accumulation, and gene expression.

Heavy metal toxicity in plants and the potential NO-releasing novel techniques as the impending mitigation alternatives.

Environmental pollutants like heavy metals are toxic, persistent, and bioaccumulative in nature. Contamination of agricultural fields with heavy metals not only hampers the quality and yield of crops but also poses a serious threat to human health by entering the food chain. Plants generally cope with heavy metal stress by regulating their redox machinery. In this context, nitric oxide (NO) plays a potent role in combating heavy metal toxicity in plants. Studies have shown that the exogenous application of NO donors protects plants against the deleterious effects of heavy metals by enhancing their antioxidative defense system. Most of the studies have used sodium nitroprusside (SNP) as a NO donor for combating heavy metal stress despite the associated concerns related to cyanide release. Recently, NO-releasing nanoparticles have been tested for their efficacy in a few plants and other biomedical research applications suggesting their use as an alternative to chemical NO donors with the advantage of safe, slow and prolonged release of NO. This suggests that they may also serve as potential candidates in mitigating heavy metal stress in plants. Therefore, this review presents the role of NO, the application of chemical NO donors, potential advantages of NO-releasing nanoparticles, and other NO-release strategies in biomedical research that may be useful in mitigating heavy metal stress in plants.

Biochar amendment reduces cadmium uptake by stimulating cadmium-resistant PGPR in tomato rhizosphere

Biochar amendment in the soil can exert a positive effect in reducing heavy metal toxicity in plants. However, it remains unclear the extent to which this effect is associated with the modulation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Here, we initially conducted a pot experiment using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) as a model plant grown in soil spiked with cadmium. First, we found biochar amendment to result in reduced cadmium uptake in tomato plants and trackable changes in the tomato rhizosphere microbiome. Then, a rhizosphere transplant experiment validated the importance of this microbiome modulation for cadmium-toxicity amelioration. Sequence-based analyses targeted the isolation of representative isolates of PGPR, including Bacillus and Flavisolibacter spp. that displayed in vitro cadmium tolerance and biosorption capabilities (in addition to abilities to solubilize phosphate and produce indole acetic acid). Last, we performed a soil inoculation experiment and confirmed the effectiveness of these isolates in reducing cadmium toxicity in tomato plants. Besides, we found the inoculation of these taxa as single inoculant and in combination to result in increased activities of specific antioxidant enzymes in tomato tissues. Taken together, this study revealed the ecological and physiological mechanisms by which biochar amendment indirectly alleviate cadmium toxicity in tomato plants, in this case, via the modulation and activity of specific PGPR populations. This study provides new insights into strategies able to promote beneficial PGPR in the rhizosphere with potential application to ameliorate heavy metal toxicity in plants.

Heavy metal induced regulation of plant biology: Recent insights.

The presence of different forms of heavy metals in the earth crust is very primitive and probably associated with the origin of plant life. However, since the beginning of human civilisation, heavy metal use and its contamination to all living systems on earth have significantly increased due to human anthropogenic activities. Heavy metals are nonbiodegradable, which directly or indirectly impact photosynthesis, antioxidant system, mineral nutrition status, phytohormones and amino acid-derived molecules. Due to the toxic behaviour of some heavy metals, the endogenous status of chemical messengers like phytohormones may get significantly influenced, leading to harmful impacts on plant growth, development and overall yield of the plants. It has been noticed that exogenous application of phytohormones, that is, abscisic acid, salicylic acid, auxins, brassinosteroids, cytokinins, ethylene and gibberellins can positively regulate the heavy metal toxicity in plants through the regulation of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, nitrogen metabolism, proline metabolisms, transpiration rate, and cell division. Furthermore, it may also restrict the entry of heavy metals into the plant cells, which aids in the recovery of plant growth and productivity. Besides these, some defence molecules also assist the plant in dealing with heavy metal toxicity. Therefore, the present review aims to bridge the knowledge gap in this context and present outstanding discoveries related to plant life supportive processes during stressful conditions including phytohormones and heavy metal crosstalk along with suggestions for future research in this field.

THE EFFECTS of HEAVY METAL APPLICATIONS on ANTIOXIDANT DEFENCE ACTIVATION in BARLEY and WHEAT VARIETIES

Heavy metals are known as agents for oxidative stress by formation of reactive oxygen species and accumulated on the earth. This accumulation can than be transported via food chain to humans and causes some more serious health problems. As a multicellular higher organisms, plants are the first stop for heavy metal accumulation during this traffic. Therefore, plants are not only the vehicle of this transportation, but also another affected organisms together with animals and humans, due to their lowered self productivity. However, as antioxidant defence systems play a crucial defence against oxidative stress, these responses could be used as early biomarkers of heavy metal toxicity in plants. Based on this, we have examined whether antioxidant defence responses are reliable indicators for the toxicity of heavy metals cadmium and lead in different crop plants within this study. By using the seeds of Hordeum vulgare cv. Çıldır and Triticum aestivum cv. Gerek, different single and combined concentrations of CdCl2 and PbCl2 treatments were applied to investigate glutathione (GSH), protein contents and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in the roots and shoots of these mentioned varieties. Our results shown that, heavy metals had an effect on the tested parameters and variability in results reflect the differences in the rate of metabolism with regard to heavy metals between varieties. On the other hand, due to the high GSH and GST values observed in the studied plants, it should be mentioned that they are generally adaptable to stress conditions with regard to applied heavy metals in the study.

Genes involved in mRNA surveillance are induced in Brachypodium distachyon under cadmium toxicity.

Cd accumulation in plant cells results in dramatic problems including oxidative stress and inhibition of vital enzymes. It also affects mineral uptakes by disrupting membrane permeability. Interaction among Cd and other plant nutrient elements changes the nutritional contents of crops and reduces their yield. In the present study, Cd stress in Brachypodium distachyon led to the upregulation of some heavy metal transport genes (influx or efflux) encoding cation-efflux proteins, heavy metal-associated proteins and NRAMP proteins. The Arabidopsis orthologs of the differentially expressed B. distachyon genes (DEGs) under Cd toxicity were identified, which exhibited Bradi4g26905 was an ortholog of AtALY1-2. Detailed co-expression network and gene ontology analyses found the potential involvement of the mRNA surveillance pathway in Cd tolerance in B. distachyon. These genes were shown to be downregulated by sulfur (S) deficiency. This is the first transcriptomic study investigating the effect of Cd toxicity in B. distachyon, a model plant for genomic studies in Poaceae (Gramineae) species. The results are expected to provide valuable information for more comprehensive research related to heavy metal toxicity in plants.

The Effect of Irrigation with Magnetically Treated Effluent on Chemical Properties and Soil Heavy Metals

Due to increasing population and limited food resources, the share of access to agricultural water and soil resources is declining and has faced human beings with the great challenge of food security and regional and international crises. Heavy metal toxicity in plants causes disorders in the plant that may eventually reduce plant growth. One of the methods that can be used to remediate the soil is the use of magnetic water. In this study, the effect of using magnetically treated effluent on the chemical properties and traceability of soil heavy metals was investigated. For this purpose, a factorial experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications in 2020 at Babolsar city. Treatments include irrigation with well water (W1), irrigation with mixing 25% of effluent and 75% of well water (W2), irrigation with the mixing of 50% of effluent and 50% of well water (W3), irrigation with mixing of 75% of effluent and 25% of water Well (W4), irrigation with 100% effluent (W5) under magnetic field (I1) and without magnetic field (I2) was. The results showed that the effect of irrigation type and water and effluent mixing on electrical conductivity, solutes, and heavy metals in the soil at different depths was significant at 1% probability level. On average, irrigation with magnetic water reduced electrical conductivity by 30.43%, lead by 35.25%, and cadmium by 56.11% in the soil profile. In treatments with higher effluent mixing percentages, the number of solutes increased in different soil depths, which was due to higher amounts of elements, especially heavy metals in the effluent. Therefore, by using magnetic technology to reduce the solutes and heavy metals in the soil, the conditions for better cultivation in terms of reducing the toxicity of plants to absorb heavy metals can be provided.

CONCEPT OF DUSHI VISHA (CUMULATIVE TOXICITY) IN MODERN ERA: A CRITICAL REVIEW

In present era, thousands of harmful toxins are accumulated in environment are taken by human beings in different forms. These harmful toxins cause cumulative toxicity in human being which results in symptoms that can be seen slowly after their long- term use. These harmful toxins may be of Sthavara Visha/plant origin (e.g. Fruits and vegetables contaminated with pesticides, ripening agents, infections, heavy metal toxicity in plants, Maida, Pollen grains, dust, Latex from plants) Jangama Visha/ animal origin (e.g. Animal dander, adulteration in milk and milk products, Sea food containing heavy metals such as Hg, PCBs) Kritrim Visha (e.g. Toxic ingredients in cosmetics, Food preservatives, Food Flavouring agents, Synthetic Colour Additives, Environmental Pollution, Agricultural poisons, Medications like aspirin etc.). This Cumulative toxicity is similar to Dushi Visha as described in Ayurveda. A poison, which is having fewer properties, which means less than ten classical properties that a poison should contain, or either the poison which is having lesser potency of all the ten properties, attains a latent stage in the body is called as Dushi Visha (latent poison). The aim and objectives of this study is to study the concept of Dushi Visha in modern era and its toxic effects on human body.

Inoculation with Rhizobacteria Enhanced Tolerance of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Plants in Response to Cadmium Stress

In this study, cadmium (Cd)-tolerant bacteria Serratia sp. D23 (D23) and Sphingomonas sp. D36 (D36) were isolated from Cd-contaminated rhizospheric soil. Both strains have indole-3-acetic acid production, phosphate solubilization and siderophores production ability. A hydroponic experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of D23 and D36 on Cd toxicity and Cd content in tomato plants. The results indicated that under Cd-stressed condition, D23 and D36 inoculation increased photosynthetic pigment content in tomato leaves and decreased malonyldialdehyde level in tomato roots (p < 0.05). Both strains could alleviate Cd-induced inhibition of dry mass accumulation, D23 inoculation increased the root and leaf dry mass by 44.95% and 99.13%, while D36 treatment increased the root and leaf dry mass by 41.56% and 46.81%, respectively. Besides, D23 treatment reduced the Cd content in tomato root by 46.70%, and D36 inoculation reduced the Cd content in root and leaf by and 27.63% and 35.41%. Moreover, the expression of stress-related genes, including Hsp90, MT2 and Nramp3 were enhanced by bacterial inoculation. The subcellular localization of Cd and the activity of antioxidant enzyme were also influenced by D23 and D36 colonization. Taken together, rhizobacteria D23 and D36 could alleviate Cd toxicity and reduce Cd concentration in tomato plants via alleviating oxidative stress, modulating Cd subcellular localization and upregulating stress-related gene expression. This study provides evidence of enhancing Cd tolerance in tomato plants via rhizosphere bacteria and will be helpful to establish bacterial-assisted approach for alleviating heavy metal toxicity in plants.

Hence, exogenous effectors were effective in reducing heavy metals-induced toxicity by maintaining the redox cell status.
