Measuring General Health Literacy in Chinese adults: validation of the HLS19-Q12 instrument.

Health literacy measurement lays a solid foundation to identify associations with health outcomes and monitor population health literacy levels over time. In mainland China, most existing health literacy instruments are either knowledge-based or practice-based, making health literacy results incomparable between China and other countries. This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the 12-item Health Literacy Population Survey (HLS19-Q12) in a general population of Chinese adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted to recruit primary carers of students from 11 schools in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, using convenience cluster sampling. Participants completed an online self-administered survey that collected information on key sociodemographics, health literacy (HLS19-Q12 and a comparison tool: Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ)), and health-related outcomes. Using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist as a guideline, we tested internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, structural validity, concurrent predictive validity, and convergent validity of the HLS19-Q12. Overall, 14,184 participants completed the full survey. The HLS19-Q12 showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.93), moderate test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.54), satisfactory content validity (based on the 12-matrix health literacy model), and strong structural validity (comparative fit index = 0.94, Tucker and Lewis's index of fit = 0.93, root mean square error of approximation = 0.095). Concurrent predictive validity results showed health literacy was associated with both health determinants and health-related outcomes. The HLS19-Q12 had weak to strong correlations (coefficients = 0.24 to 0.42) with the nine scales of the HLQ. Respondents had an average score of 81.6 (± 23.0) when using the HLS19-Q12, with 35.0% and 7.5% having problematic and inadequate levels of health literacy, respectively. The HLS19-Q12 is a reliable and valid instrument to measure health literacy in our sample. Further validation is needed with a more nationally representative sample of Chinese adults. The HLS19-Q12 could be used as a comprehensive, skills-based, and easy-to-administer health literacy assessment tool integrated into population surveys and intervention evaluations.

Clinical tools for evaluating the severity of overactive bladder: A systematic review of psychometric properties

Objectives To systematically evaluate the evidence describing the psychometric properties of clinical measures for assessing overactive bladder symptoms (urinary urgency with or without urge urinary incontinence, urinary frequency and nocturia). To evaluate the quality of this evidence-base using the COnsensus-based Standards for selecting health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tools. Data sources Five electronic databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science) were searched from dataset inception to August 2023. Review methods Study screening, data extraction and quality appraisal were performed by two independent authors. Inclusion criteria were studies testing one or more psychometric properties of clinical tools for the assessment of overactive bladder symptoms among adults aged 18 years and older for both sexes. The methodological quality and quality of the evidence were evaluated using the COSMIN checklist and GRADE tools, respectively. Results The search identified 40 studies totalling 10,634 participants evaluating the psychometric properties of 15 clinical tools. The COSMIN methodological quality was rated good for most measures, and the GRADE quality of evidence ranged from low (13%) to high (33%). The Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, Overactive Bladder Questionnaire and Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score were of good methodological and high-GRADE evidence qualities. Conclusion Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, the Overactive Bladder Questionnaire and the Neurogenic Bladder Symptoms Score are promising psychometrically sound measures. The Overactive Bladder Symptom Score has been applied to the most culturally diverse populations supported by studies of good methodological and high-GRADE evidence quality.

CAREGIVING INTERACTIONS OF FORMAL CAREGIVERS AND PERSONS WITH DEMENTIA: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF MEASURES

Abstract A psychometrically sound assessment of caregiving interactions is essential to collect valid information about the interactions, and to establish interventions to optimize the interactions in dementia care. This review aims to identify measures of caregiving interactions between formal caregivers and persons with dementia and evaluate their psychometric properties. We conducted a systematic review of studies published by February 2023 in four databases— PubMed, PsychINFO, CINHAL, and Web of Science. COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist was chosen for quality appraisal of selected studies. Our search yielded 818 scholarly records and identified five eligible instruments (published in six scholarly records). Three measures assessed interactions between formal caregivers and persons with dementia from both caregiver and person with dementia’s perspectives while one evaluated from the caregiver perspective and the other from person with dementia’s perspective. Additionally, three measures assessed interactions based on observations while other two were based on interviews. Preliminary results showed the Communication Behavior in Dementia (CODEM) as a promising measure with some excellent psychometrics but it needed further testing with larger sample and assessment of responsiveness to change. The remaining four measures (IC-Communication-SR, Coding Scheme for Mealtime Interactions, Montreal Evaluation of Communication Questionnaire for use in Long-Term Care (MECQ-LTC), and Barnards Feeding Scale) had concerns related to low internal consistency, low reliability, and lack of adequate psychometric tests. Overall, this review identified gaps in current measures, suggesting a need to establish psychometrically sound tools to assess and optimize caregiving interactions in dementia care.

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the fathers' fear of childbirth scale: A cross-sectional study.

Fear of childbirth (FOC) is one of the most common mental health concerns among expectant fathers, which can cause adverse consequences for themselves and their families. A valid and accurate tool is the key to the identification of FOC. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the fathers' fear of childbirth scale (FFCS) into simplified Chinese and test the scale's psychometric properties among expectant fathers in mainland China. Researchers obtained translation permission and followed the multiphase translation guidelines to develop the Chinese version of the fathers' fear of childbirth scale (C-FFCS). Relevant psychometric properties were selected for the scale's psychometric validation on the basis of the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Status Measurement Instruments checklist. In this cross-sectional study, two samples of expectant fathers were collected in a university-affiliated hospital in Hangzhou between September and October 2022. A total of 381 expectant fathers completed the C-FFCS, resulting in an effective response rate of 95.6%. The C-FFCS is a 3-factor structure consisting of 16 items, which explained 66.374% of the total variance. The content validity index of items ranged from 0.833 to 1.00, and the scale-level content validity index was 0.931. The confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the scale's 3-factor structure. Evidence of convergent validity (average variance extracted = 0.508-0.780) as well as discriminant validity offered excellent psychometric support. The Cronbach's α coefficient, McDonald's ω coefficient, intraclass correlation coefficient, Spearman-Brown coefficient, and Guttman split-half coefficient are within the satisfactory range (> 0.80). Significant correlations between the scores of the C-FFCS and Childbirth Attitude Questionnaire (r = 0.658, p < 0.01) and Fear of Birth Scale (r = 0.555, p < 0.01) both revealed good concurrent validity. The structure of C-FFCS was invariant across different parity groups, with no floor and ceiling effect. The C-FFCS was demonstrated to be a sound instrument with good reliability and validity for measuring Chinese expectant fathers' FOC levels. However, further studies are advocated to verify the C-FFCS among a larger sample that is more representative of the Chinese expectant father population.

Cancer-related fatigue measures in palliative care: A psychometric systematic review.

In palliative care, the prevention and relief of fatigue are regarded as crucial goals in patients with cancer. A systematic review was carried out according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments methodology. Searches were conducted in Medline (through PubMed), Web of Science, Open Gray, Scielo, Cochrane, CINAHL and EMBASE. All instruments found in each study were assessed using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments checklist and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. A total of 5598 articles were identified in the different databases. In total, 57 studies describing 19 instruments were included in this study. The main properties evaluated were internal consistency, cross-cultural validity, hypotheses testing and responsiveness. All studies were evaluated with the Strobe scale with a score greater than 6 points. According to the quality methodological results, Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, Problems and Needs in Palliative Care Questionnaire, European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life 15-item Questionnaire for Palliative Care and Palliative Care Quality of Life Instrument are the recommended instruments used for assessing cancer-related fatigue in palliative care. Measurement Properties of Aerobic Capacity Measures in Neuromuscular Diseases: A Systematic Review.

ObjectiveTo systematically evaluate the measurement properties of aerobic capacity measures in neuromuscular diseases.Data sourcesMEDLINE, EMBASE, SportDiscus and Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Science were systematically searched from inception until 30 June 2021.Study selection and data extractionScreening, data extraction, risk of bias assessment and quality assessment were performed by 2 independent researchers. Studies were included if they evaluated measurement properties of aerobic capacity measures in adults with neuromuscular diseases. Risk of bias was assessed using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. Results were pooled and the quality of the evidence was determined using a modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach.Data synthesisNine studies including 187 participants were included in this review. Low quality of evidence was found for sufficient content validity of peak oxygen consumption through maximal exercise testing. Criterion validity of 4 out of 7 different measures to predict peak oxygen consumption was sufficient; however, quality of evidence was low or very low for all measures. No studies were found evaluating reliability or responsiveness.ConclusionThere was a lack of high-quality studies with sufficiently large sample sizes that evaluated the measurement properties of aerobic capacity measures in neuromuscular diseases.LAY ABSTRACTAerobic capacity (or cardiovascular endurance) is an important outcome measure in exercise intervention studies and pharmacological trials in neuromuscular diseases. To establish the effects of these interventions it is important to use outcome measures with good measurement properties. This means that outcome measures are accurate (valid), repeatable (reliable) and able to detect change over time (responsive). The aim of this study was to review the scientific literature regarding the measurement properties of aerobic capacity measures in neuromuscular diseases. Nine small studies (4–44 participants) reporting on the validity of 8 aerobic capacity measures were found. Five of these measures were judged as valid, but the quality of evidence was low. There were no studies evaluating reliability and responsiveness. Taken together, these results were considered insufficient to make recommendations. High-quality studies, with more participants and a focus on reliability and responsiveness, are required.

Instruments used to measure knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals towards antibiotic use for the treatment of urinary tract infections: A systematic review.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the second most common condition (after upper respiratory tract infections) for which adults receive antibiotics, and this prevalence may contribute to antibiotic resistance. Knowledge and attitudes have been identified as potential determinants of antibiotic prescribing behaviour among healthcare professionals in the treatment and management of UTIs. An instrument that captures prescribers' baseline knowledge of and attitudes towards antibiotic prescribing for UTIs could inform interventions to enhance prescribing. The current systematic review evaluates the psychometric properties of instruments already available and describes the theoretical constructs they measure. Five electronic databases were searched for published studies and instruments. The Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments checklist was used to assess the psychometric quality reporting of the instruments. The items included in each instrument were mapped onto the theoretical constructs underlying knowledge and attitudes using a mixed-theoretical model developed for this study. Fourteen studies met the review inclusion criteria. All instruments were available for review. None of the instruments had all the psychometric properties evaluated. Most of the instruments sought to identify knowledge and/or attitude factors influencing antibiotic prescribing for UTIs rather than to measure/assess knowledge and attitudes. Few instruments for the assessment of knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals towards antibiotic use and UTI treatment are available. None of the instruments underwent the full development process to ensure that all psychometric properties were met. Furthermore, none of the instruments assessed all domains of knowledge and attitudes. Therefore, the ability of the instruments to provide a robust measurement of knowledge and attitudes is doubtful. There is a need for an instrument that fully and accurately measures the constructs of knowledge and attitude of healthcare professionals in the treatment of UTIs.

Item Response Theory Analysis of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S): A Systematic Review.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing and is not yet under control. Evidence regarding the impacts of COVID-19 on psychological distress has been widely reported worldwide, and one of the primary concerns regarding psychological distress is fear (ie, fear of COVID-19). Therefore, having a robust instrument for assessing fear of COVID-19 is important. The present systematic review aimed to synthesize the psychometric evidence evaluated using item response theory (IRT) on the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S).MethodsUtilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, four academic databases (Scopus, PubMed Central, ProQuest, and ISI Web of Knowledge) were used to search target papers. Keywords used for search were “Fear of COVID-19 Scale” and its abbreviation (ie, “FCV-19S”) and IRT-related terms. The COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist was then applied to evaluate the methodological quality of the reviewed papers. Moreover, psychometric properties using IRT methods were synthesized using a qualitative method.ResultsThe initial search resulted in 552 papers (73 duplicates) and 479 were screened based on their titles and abstracts. Finally, 16 papers were included for review regarding their methodological quality (via COSMIN) to synthesize the psychometric evidence for FCV-19S. The 16 papers included 21 countries with 16 language versions of FCV-19S.ConclusionAll the psychometric evidence indicated that the seven items in the FCV-19S fit with the concept of fear. The FCV-19S is a strong and valid instrument for assessing fear across different languages. The seven items in the FCV-19S appear to be unidimensional in assessing fear, which indicates that all items are necessary in the FCV-19S.

A systematic literature review of patient self-assessment instruments concerning quality of primary care in multiprofessional clinics.

BackgroundQuality of care remains a priority issue and is correlated with patient experience. Measuring multidimensional patient primary care experiences in multiprofessional clinics requires a robust instrument. Although many exist, little is known about their quality.ObjectiveTo identify patient perception instruments in multiprofessional primary care and evaluate their quality.MethodsSystematic review using Medline, Pascal, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, Cochrane, Scopus, and CAIRN. Eligible articles developed, evaluated, or validated 1 or more self-assessment instruments. The instruments had to measure primary care delivery, patient primary care experiences and assess at least 3 quality-of-care dimensions. The COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist was used to assess methodological quality of included studies. Instrument measurement properties were appraised using 3 possible quality scores. Data were combined to provide best-evidence synthesis based on the number of studies, their methodological quality, measurement property appraisal, and result consistency. Subscales used to capture patient primary care experiences were extracted and grouped into the 9 Institute of Medicine dimensions.ResultsTwenty-nine articles were found. The included instruments captured many subscales illustrating the diverse conceptualization of patient primary care experiences. No included instrument demonstrated adequate validity and the lack of scientific methodology for assessing reliability made interpreting validity questionable. No study evaluated instrument responsiveness.ConclusionNumerous patient self-assessment instruments were identified capturing a wide range of patient experiences, but their measurement properties were weak. Research is required to develop and validate a generic instrument for assessing quality of multiprofessional primary care.Trial registrationNot applicable.

Psychometric properties of clinical competency assessment instruments for psychiatric nurses: A systematic review of literature.

Facilitating the healing process of patients with psychiatric disorders depends on high-quality mental health care and expert psychiatric nurses. A valid tool is required to objectively evaluate the quality of performance and competency of psychiatric nurses. This systematic review aimed to investigate and critique the psychometric properties of some psychiatric nursing clinical competency assessment instruments with Consensus-based standards for the selection of health status measurement instruments (COSMIN) checklist and according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). To retrieve published articles using Persian and English keywords "psychiatric nursing," "competence," "competency," "tool," "checklist," "scale," "questionnaire," "psychiatric mental health nurse," were searched in databases without time limitation. Then, psychometric properties of selected instruments were evaluated using the COSMIN checklist and reported according to the PRISMA statement. Most of these tools did not entirely and desirably report psychometric properties. It is not designed as a special tool for postgraduate psychiatric nursing. The methodology of existing instruments does not meet the COSMIN checklist criteria; therefore it needs to develop. To assess the competency of psychiatric nursing postgraduate, a tool tailored to the cultural and social context and with acceptable psychometric properties is necessary.

Measurement Properties of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Pruritus: An Updated Systematic Review

This systematic review aims to provide an update on measurement properties of patient-reported outcome measures for pruritus. A Medline literature search was conducted to update the systematic review published in this journal in 2017 and to identify new validation studies published between October 2015 and July 2019. The methodological quality of validation studies was assessed on the basis of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist, and the measurement properties of patient-reported outcome measures were evaluated. A total of 19 new studies were included and added to the 22 studies identified in the previously published review. Evidence from all the 41 studies evaluating 38 different measures was summarized. Outcome measures were mapped to one of three constructs where possible: pruritus intensity, pruritus severity, pruritus-specific health-related QOL. COSMIN rating revealed mixed results, with deficiencies in the methodological quality of many studies across all constructs. The most appropriate pruritus severity measure was the Itch Severity Scale. ItchyQoL and the disease-specific Uremic Pruritus in Dialysis Scale achieved the most promising results considering the construct pruritus-specific health-related QOL. For pruritus intensity, nine measures performed similarly well.

Psychometric properties of the ethical conflict in nursing questionnaire critical care version among Chinese nurses: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundEthical conflicts are common in the critical care setting, and have compromised job satisfaction and nursing care quality. Using reliable and valid instruments to measure the ethical conflict is essential. This study aimed to translate the Ethical Conflict in Nursing Questionnaire — Critical Care Version into Chinese and determine the reliability and validity in the population of Chinese nurses.MethodsResearchers obtained permission and followed the translation-backward method to develop the Chinese version of the Ethical Conflict in Nursing Questionnaire — Critical Care Version (ECNQ-CCV-C). Relevant psychometric properties were selected according to the Consensus-based standards for the selection of health status measurement instruments checklist. Critical care nurses were recruited from two tertiary public hospitals in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and Kunming, Yunnan Province. Of the 264 nurses we approached, 248 gave their consent and completed the study.ResultsThe ECNQ-CCV-C achieved Cronbach’s alphas 0.902 and McDonald’s omega coefficient 0.903. The test-retest reliability was satisfactory within a 2-week interval (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.757). A unidimensional structure of the ECNQ-CCV-C was determined. Confirmatory factor analysis supported acceptable structure validity. Concurrent validity was confirmed by a moderate relation with a measure for hospital ethical climate (r = − 0.33, p < 0.01). The model structure was invariant across different gender groups, with no floor/ceiling effect.ConclusionsThe ECNQ-CCV-C demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity among Chinese nurses and had great clinical utility in critical care nursing.

Self-reported quality of life following stroke: a systematic review of instruments with a focus on their psychometric properties.

To evaluate the psychometric properties of common health-related quality-of-life instruments used post stroke and provide recommendations for research and clinical use with this diagnostic group. A systematic review of the psychometric properties of the five most commonly used quality-of-life measurement tools (EQ-5D, SF-36, SF-6D, AQoL, SS-QOL) was conducted. Electronic searches were performed in MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE on November 27th 2019. Two authors screened papers against the inclusion criteria and where consensus was not reached, a third author was consulted. Included papers were appraised using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist and findings synthesized to make recommendations. A total of n = 50,908 papers were screened and n = 45 papers reporting on 40 separate evaluations of psychometric properties met inclusion criteria (EQ-5D = 19, SF-36 = 16, SF-6D = 4, AQoL = 2, SS-QOL = 4). Studies reported varied psychometric quality of instruments, and results show that psychometric properties of quality-of-life instruments for the stroke population have not been well established. The strongest evidence was identified for the use of the EQ-5D as a quality-of-life assessment for adult stroke survivors. This systematic evaluation of the psychometric properties of self-reported quality-of-life instruments used with adults after stroke suggests that validity across tools should not be assumed. Clinicians and researchers alike may use findings to help identify the most valid and reliable measurement instrument for understanding the impact of stroke on patient-reported quality of life.

Does Protein Supplementation Support Adaptations to Arduous Concurrent Exercise Training? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis with Military Based Applications

We evaluated the impact of protein supplementation on adaptations to arduous concurrent training in healthy adults with potential applications to individuals undergoing military training. Peer-reviewed papers published in English meeting the population, intervention, comparison and outcome criteria were included. Database searches were completed in PubMed, Web of science and SPORTDiscus. Study quality was evaluated using the COnsensus based standards for the selection of health status measurement instruments checklist. Of 11 studies included, nine focused on performance, six on body composition and four on muscle recovery. Cohen’s d effect sizes showed that protein supplementation improved performance outcomes in response to concurrent training (ES = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.08–1.70). When analysed separately, improvements in muscle strength (SMD = +4.92 kg, 95% CI = −2.70–12.54 kg) were found, but not in aerobic endurance. Gains in fat-free mass (SMD = +0.75 kg, 95% CI = 0.44–1.06 kg) and reductions in fat-mass (SMD = −0.99, 95% CI = −1.43–0.23 kg) were greater with protein supplementation. Most studies did not report protein turnover, nitrogen balance and/or total daily protein intake. Therefore, further research is warranted. However, our findings infer that protein supplementation may support lean-mass accretion and strength gains during arduous concurrent training in physical active populations, including military recruits.

Psychometric properties of measures of upper limb activity performance in adults with and without spasticity undergoing neurorehabilitation-A systematic review.

This systematic review appraises the measurement quality of tools which assess activity and/or participation in adults with upper limb spasticity arising from neurological impairment, including methodological quality of the psychometric studies. Differences in the measurement quality of the tools for adults with a neurological impairment, but without upper limb spasticity, is also presented. 29 measurement tools identified in a published review were appraised in this systematic review. For each identified tool, we searched 3 databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL) to identify psychometric studies completed with neurorehabilitation samples. Methodological quality of instrument evaluations was assessed with use of the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. Synthesis of ratings allowed an overall rating of the psychometric evidence for each measurement tool to be calculated. 149 articles describing the development or evaluation of psychometric properties of 22 activity and/or participation measurement tools were included. Evidence specific to tool use for adults with spasticity was identified within only 15 of the 149 articles and provided evidence for 9 measurement tools only. Overall, COSMIN appraisal highlighted a lack of evidence of measurement quality. Synthesis of ratings demonstrated all measures had psychometric weaknesses or gaps in evidence (particularly for use of tools with adults with spasticity). The systematic search, appraisal and synthesis revealed that currently there is insufficient measurement quality evidence to recommend one tool over another. Notwithstanding this conclusion, newer tools specifically designed for use with people with neurological conditions who have upper limb spasticity, have emergent measurement properties that warrant further research. Validity of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Hip Disease Evaluation Questionnaire (JHEQ) for Japanese patients with labral tear.

The Japanese Orthopaedic Association Hip Disease Evaluation Questionnaire (JHEQ) was created for patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and to evaluate the conditions of patients with hip disease. Nevertheless, the validity of the JHEQ for patients with hip labral tears remains unclear. Therefore, we validated the JHEQ in patients with labral tears. There were 51 patients (mean age 44.5, range 18–60 years; 31 women). Thirty-two patients had right-sided tears, 29 underwent hip arthroscopy, 32 had femoroacetabular impingement and 15 had developmental hip dysplasia. Five PROMs included in the JHEQ were evaluated using test–retest methods. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments checklist. The intra-class correlation coefficient (1, 2) of all JHEQ scores (84 points) was 0.88 and Cronbach’s α was 0.94. Bland–Altman analysis revealed good test–retest reliability for the JHEQ. The Spearman’s rank test, including the SF-36 subscale, showed a high correlation with physical functioning [1, 0.67 (P < 0.01); 2, 0.65 (P < 0.01)], body pain [1, 0.54 (P < 0.01); 2, 0.53 (P < 0.01)] and physical component summary [1, 0.55 (P < 0.01); 2, 0.55 (P < 0.01)]. The value of minimal important change (22.9) was higher than that of smallest detectable change (3.21), suggesting that the JHEQ has adequate responsiveness. We demonstrated the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the JHEQ in Japanese patients with hip labral tears. JHEQ is a valid assessment tool not only for patients with hip osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis but also for those with hip labral tears.

Assessing sexual and reproductive health dimensions tools in women with type 1 diabetes mellitus with regard to Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments checklist.

A valid tool is of paramount importance in determining women's sexual and reproductive health status, meeting their health needs, and recognizing the effectiveness of some interventions. This review study aimed to assess sexual and reproductive health dimensions tools in women with type 1 diabetes mellitus with regard to Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. In this review study, in addition to Iranian databases (MagIran, Sid, Irandoc), non-Iranian databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science) and Google Scholar search engine were considered. The mentioned databases were searched for articles in English and Persian published within 2000–2019, using the search strategy for each database and Boolean operators along with appropriate keywords according to the MESH term. Articles with nonresearcher-made tools measuring the sexual and reproductive health concepts and dimensions were included in the present study. Afterward, the psychometric properties of the tools were assessed according to the COSMIN checklist. In the selected articles, there were 14 psychometrically valid tools to be assessed from 151 articles containing the sexual and reproductive health dimensions; among which, seven tools were evaluated with regard to COSMIN. None of the tools also had all the features noted in COSMIN. Moreover, all the concerned scales were not interpretable and accountable; however, a majority of them had internal consistency and construct validity. In this study, there was no valid and specific tool for measuring sexual-reproductive health status in this population group. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a valid tool according to the dimensions and needs of specific reproductive health in type 1 diabetes.

Systematic review: measurement properties of patient-reported outcome measures evaluated with childhood brain tumor survivors or other acquired brain injury.

Survivors of childhood brain tumors or other acquired brain injury (ABI) are at risk of poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL); its valid and reliable assessment is essential to evaluate the effect of their illness on their lives. The aim of this review was to critically appraise psychometric properties of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of HRQoL for these children, to be able to make informed decisions about the most suitable PROM for use in clinical practice. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO for studies evaluating measurement properties of HRQoL PROMs in children treated for brain tumors or other ABI. Methodological quality of relevant studies was evaluated using the consensus-based standards for the selection of health status measurement instruments checklist. Eight papers reported measurement properties of 4 questionnaires: Health Utilities Index (HUI), PedsQL Core and Brain Tumor Modules, and Child and Family Follow-up Survey (CFFS). Only the CFFS had evidence of content and structural validity. It also demonstrated good internal consistency, whereas both PedsQL modules had conflicting evidence regarding this. Conflicting evidence regarding test-retest reliability was reported for the HUI and PedsQL Core Module only. Evidence of measurement error/precision was favorable for HUI and CFFS and absent for both PedsQL modules. All 4 PROMs had some evidence of construct validity/hypothesis testing but no evidence of responsiveness to change. Valid and reliable assessment is essential to evaluate impact of ABI on young lives. However, measurement properties of PROMs evaluating HRQoL appropriate for this population require further evaluation, specifically construct validity, internal consistency, and responsiveness to change.
