Factors Affecting Health-Promoting Behaviors in Patients Diagnosed with Myocardial Infarction

Background: Cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction (MI), represent a significant global health burden, particularly in developing countries like Pakistan. Health-promoting behaviors (HBs) play a crucial role in the management and prevention of MI, potentially reducing morbidity and mortality rates among affected individuals. Objective: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing health-promoting behaviors among patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction and to evaluate the level of engagement in such behaviors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan from September 2022 to June 2023. The study population consisted of 318 patients diagnosed with MI (ST and non-STEMI), selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, health behavior data using the Song-and-Lee Health Behaviors Checklist, and analyzed using SPSS version 25 for descriptive and inferential statistics, including independent t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression. Results: The overall mean score of health-promoting behaviors among participants was 2.14 ± 0.21, indicating a moderate level of engagement. The highest mean score was observed in eating behaviors (2.26 ± 0.34), while the lowest was in health responsibility (2.00 ± 0.40). Gender and smoking status significantly influenced health-promoting behaviors, with females and non-smokers exhibiting better HB scores. Significant differences in HBs were noted across gender, co-morbidity, and history of hospitalization, but not within age, BMI, and smoking groups. Conclusion: The study concluded that myocardial infarction patients exhibit a moderate level of engagement in health-promoting behaviors, with significant variations influenced by gender and smoking status. There is a need for targeted nursing strategies to enhance health-promoting behaviors, particularly focusing on dietary habits, smoking cessation, and health responsibility among MI patients.

The associations between social support, self-regulatory fatigue, and health-promoting behaviors among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional survey.

The prevalence of diabetes in China is increasing annually, posing a serious public health challenge. Health-promoting behaviors are crucial for enhancing the quality of life in individuals with type 2 diabetes. However, the relationship between self-regulatory fatigue in type 2 diabetes, social support, and health-promoting behaviors remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the interconnections among social support, self-regulatory fatigue, and health-promoting behaviors, as well as to examine the mediating role of self-regulatory fatigue in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A cross-sectional design was employed using the Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale (SRF-S), the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and the Health Promotion Scale for People with Diabetes Mellitus (T2DHPS). These scales assessed social support, self-regulatory fatigue, and health-promoting behaviors in 316 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, exploring the relationships among these variables. SPSS and AMOS were used for statistical analysis to investigate the mediating effects. Social support in type 2 diabetes mellitus positively predicted health-promoting behaviors (β = 0.401, p < 0.001). The regression coefficients of self-regulatory fatigue in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus social support (β = -0.502, p < 0.001), and health-promoting behaviors (β = -0.331, p < 0.001), both exhibiting significant differences. Self-regulatory fatigue mediated the relationship between social support and health-promoting behaviors in these patients, with a mediation effect of 0.166, consisting of 29.28% of the total effect. A significant interplay exists among social support, self-regulatory fatigue, and health-promoting behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The findings suggest that self-regulatory fatigue mediates the relationship between social support and health-promoting behaviors. Healthcare professionals should focus on enhancing patients' social support to mitigate self-regulatory fatigue and improve health behaviors.

Impact of Multimedia Messaging Service Education and Exercise Social Support on Physical Activity Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: Quasi-Experimental Study.

Social support is one of the interpersonal stimuli that define an individual's predisposition to engage in health-promoting behaviors and is considered a facilitator in improving health habits. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can benefit from educating supportive families and friends on self-care management including exercise behavior. Multimedia messaging service (MMS) could also be an effective method for delivering targeted educational interventions that focus on physical activity (PA). This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of MMS educational interventions and perceived social support for exercise on level of PA of patients with T2DM. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was conducted to recruit 98 patients with T2DM. The intervention group received MMS education aiming to improve exercise social support and PA level for 2 months, and their counterparts in the control group received the usual routine care. We sent 2 to 3 messages daily for 2 weeks from Saturday to Thursday (12 days total). These messages were a combination of videos and texts, and the evidence-based content of these messages was reviewed and approved by the advisory committee. We randomly assigned eligible patients in a 1:1 ratio into the intervention or the control groups. Participants completed a survey in 3 periods. There were no significant differences in friends' support, family verbal, practical, or emotional support over time in the intervention group (P>.05). Yet, there was a small effect size (Cohen d) in friends' social support (0.389), family practical support (0.271), and moderate activities (0.386). A medium effect size was found in family verbal (0.463) and emotional (0.468) support. Being married increased the likelihood of friends' support by 2.3 times after intervention (P=.04), whereas rarely doing exercise decreased the likelihood of friends' support by 28% (P=.03) and family practical support by 28% (P=.01). Being female and married increased the likelihood of doing moderate activities by 1.6 times (P=.002) and 1.5 times (P=.049) in the intervention group. Being a housewife decreased the likelihood of doing moderate activities by 20% (P=.001). Finally, being a female with a higher educational level decreased the likelihood of doing hard activities by 20% (P=.04) and 15% (P=.002), respectively. A theoretically based MMS health education targeting PA levels and social support of family and friends to perform PA seems promising in promoting family and friends' social support and improving PA levels among patients with T2DM. Actively involving family and friends in educational interventions that target PA can have an impact on health-promoting behaviors in patients with diabetes.

The effect of telenursing education of self-care on health-promoting behaviors in patients with multiple sclerosis during the COVID-19 pandemic: A clinical trial study.

Multiple sclerosis is associated with decrease in health-promoting behaviors (HPBs) and require appropriate nursing interventions. Telenursing can play an important role in education of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in which face-to-face education is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of self-care education with telenursing approach on HPBs in patients with MS. In this clinical trial, 68 patients with MS were selected using simple random sampling from Jahrom MS Society and randomly assigned to the intervention (n=34) and control (n=34) groups. In the intervention group, educational sessions were held three days a week for six weeks. Data were collected using demographic information and Walker's Health-Promoting Lifestyle questionnaires before and immediately after the intervention. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests using SPSS software (Ver. 21). Based on the findings, immediately after the intervention, the mean score of HPBs was significantly higher (p=0.005) in the intervention group (145.38±26.66) than the control group (129.18±22.35). The means of nutrition, exercise, health responsibility, and stress management were significantly different between the intervention and control groups immediately after the intervention (p < 0.05). results this study indicated that self-care education with telenursing approach was effective on HPBs in patients with MS. It can be beneficial to employ as an educative-supportive approach in MS patients.

Influence of perceived stress on health-promoting behaviors in patients with metabolic syndrome: the multiple mediating roles of adaptability and social support.

: To explore the potential associations between perceived stress and health-promoting behaviors based on the theoretical schema of the middle-range theory of adaptation to chronic illness. From January to May 2021, a convenience sampling method was used to recruit 230 young and middle-aged patients with metabolic syndrome who underwent physical examination in the inpatient center of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The Health-Promoting Health Profile-Ⅱ, Chinese Perceived Stress Scale, Coping and Adaptation Processing Scale-Short Form, and Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used in the cross-sectional study. The chain mediation effect procedure and bootstrap sampling test were used to examine the mediating role of adaptability and social support between perceived stress and health-promoting behaviors. The mean score of health-promoting behaviors was 100.0±14.6, the mean score of perceived stress was 22.0± 6.9, the mean score of adaptability was 47.0±6.1, and the mean score of social support was 63.8±10.8. Perceived stress had a negative impact on patients' health-promoting behaviors (=-0.309, <0.05). The adaptability (effect size= -0.112, 95%:-0.199~-0.038) and social support (effect size= -0.032, 95%:-0.083~played a mediating role and a chain mediating role in the process of perceived stress influencing patients' health-promoting behaviors (effect size= -0.045, 95%:-0.093~-0.020). Adaptability and social support play an intermediary role between perceived stress and health-promoting behaviors in young and middle-aged patients with metabolic syndrome. Healthcare professionals can motivate patients to develop healthy behaviors by developing intervention strategies on adaptability and social support.

The Relationship Between Health Literacy and Health Promoting Behaviors in Patients with Type2 Diabetes

Background and Objective: Health literacy and health-promoting behaviors are the main factors in field of health promotion and education and play an important effect to prevent diabetes type II complications and reduce its health care costs. Therefore, this study aimed to find the relationship between health literacy and health-promoting behaviors in patients with type II diabetes.Materials and Methods: This correlational study was conducted on 175 diabetic patients (20 to 65 years) from April 2020 to October 2020. Convenience sampling was used to select eligible diabetic patients who were referred to governmental diabetes clinics in Ganjavian Hospital where located in Dezful city, Iran. Data were collected by diabetic patients’ health-promoting behaviors questionnaire and health literacy questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22, descriptive statistics, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.Results: The mean scores for health literacy and health-promoting behaviors were 113.54 ± 25.66 and 171.7 ± 33.69, respectively. The highest scores in health-promoting behaviors belonged to blood sugar control and foot control and the lowest score belonged to physical activity. There was a significant relationship between all dimensions of health promoting behaviors and health literacy (P = 0.000, r = 0.444).Conclusion: Since there is a positive relationship between health literacy and health-promoting behaviors, there is a need for more efforts in teaching health-promoting behaviors and publicizing self-care. Further, adding these concepts into course plans may lead to the health improvement of community members.

Effect of self-control on health promotion behavior in patients with coronary heart disease: mediating effect of ego-depletion

ABSTRACT The present study used a cross-sectional survey design to explore the role of ego-depletion in the relationship between self-control and health-promoting behaviors in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). This study recruited 277 patients with CHD to measure the levels of ego-depletion, self-control and health-promotion (HP) behavior using Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale (SRF-s), Dual-Mode of Self-Control Scale (DMSD-s) and Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile-II (HPLP-II) to examine the relationship between the three. Study found that self-control improved the patients’ HP behaviors to some extent. Self-control in patients with CHD uses ego-depletion as the mediating variable to indirectly and positively predict the level of HP behavior, and the mediating effects account for 47.76% (impulsive system) and 15.6% (control system) of the total effects, respectively.

Factors Affecting Health-Promoting Behaviors in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally and the second most common cause of death in South Korea. Health-promoting behaviors recommended for patients with cardiovascular disease include control of diet, physical activity, cessation of smoking, medication adherence, and adherence to medical recommendations. This study aimed to determine the relationship between depression, anxiety, perception of health status, and health-promoting behavior in patients from South Korea who have suffered from cardiovascular disease. The study population comprised 161 patients at the cardiovascular center at H Hospital who were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. Descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression were employed to analyze the data. Negative correlations existed between depression, perception of health status, and health-promoting behavior. By contrast, a positive correlation existed between the perception of health status and health-promoting behavior. The main factors affecting health-promoting behaviors were alcohol consumption, duration of diagnosis, perception of health status, and depression. These variables explained 15.8% of the variance. To prevent adverse cardiac events, patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease should be assessed as soon as possible to identify psychiatric symptoms, thereby developing a potential intervention aimed at decreasing negative illness consequences.

Association of Electronic Health Literacy With Health-Promoting Behaviors in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-sectional Study.

It is important to know how well patients with type 2 diabetes understand and use health information available online in relation to health-promoting behaviors. Thus, the purposes of this study were to examine the association among electronic health literacy, perceived benefits, self-efficacy, and health-promoting behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes, and to identify factors that affect health-promoting behaviors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a diabetes center in Seoul, South Korea. It was found that health-promoting behaviors were significantly correlated with electronic health literacy (r = 0.15, P < .05), perceived benefits (r = 0.15, P < .05), and self-efficacy (r = 0.47, P < .01). In the multiple linear regression analysis to identify the factors influencing health-promoting behaviors, electronic health literacy (β = .13, P = .040) and self-efficacy (β = .38, P < .001) were found to be significant factors, even after adjusting for general and disease-related characteristics. Strategies to improve health-promoting behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes should focus on analyzing levels of electronic health literacy and deepening their understanding of online information accordingly.

The Relationship between Health Literacy and Health Promoting Behaviors in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Health promoting behaviors are known to be a key factor in managing type 2 diabetes and improving the quality of life in diabetic patients. However, there is little known about the factors influencing these behaviors in diabetic patients. This study aimed to find the relationship between the health literacy and health promoting behaviors in patients with type II diabetes. This correlational study was conducted from August to September 2016 on 175 eligible diabetic patients (20 to 65 year-old) who referred to the selected centers of diabetes control in Ahvaz City. Patients were chosen using convenience non-probable sampling. Data were collected by diabetic patients' health promoting behaviors' questionnaire and health literacy questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22, descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The mean scores for health promoting behaviors and health literacy were determined 100.45±19.82 and 76.14±15.26, respectively. The highest and lowest scores in health promoting behaviors belonged to nutrition (26.11±6.85) and physical activity (6.70±2.75), respectively. There was a significant relationship between all dimensions of health promoting behaviors and health literacy (P<0.05). Since health literacy has a positive relationship with health promoting behaviors in diabetic patients, health care providers need to concentrate on increasing the health literacy of their patients rather than solely concentrating on increasing their knowledge, thereby facilitating the development of health promoting behaviors in patients.

Health-promoting Lifestyle in Patients after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Background and ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the status of health-promoting behaviors in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and explore what factors affect healthy lifestyle behaviors.MethodsA total of 120 patients with coronary artery disease after PCI was included in this study. The Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) II was used to assess health-promoting lifestyle behavior. Data analysis was performed by t-test, analysis of variance, and multiple linear stepwise regression analyses.ResultsThe average age of the participants was 60.10±9.84 (range, 37–81) years old. Among the participants, 86.7% were men and 13.3% were women. In all, 24.2% of the patients had an excellent level of health-promoting lifestyle and 74.2% had a moderate level of health-promoting lifestyle. The spiritual growth scores were the highest, while stress management and physical activity scores were the lowest. The level of health-promoting lifestyle was higher for people with higher income and a diagnosis of stable angina.ConclusionsHealthcare providers should focus on promoting physical exercise and stress management for patients after PCI. It is also necessary to keep an eye out for patients with low income and severe illness to encourage a health-promoting lifestyle in these subsets of patients.

Predictors of health-promoting behaviors in patients with coronary artery disease in the Iranian population.

This study was carried out to determine the predictors of health-promoting behaviors (HPBs) in patients with coronary artery diseases (CAD) in the Iranian population. In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 250 eligible patients ages 42-80 years with a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 45.7 kg/m2 with CAD who were admitted to a cardiac hospital in Urmia, Iran participated. Valid questionnaires used the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II (HPLP-II), Cardiac Self-Efficacy (CSE) and General Self-Efficacy (GSE) scales to assess HPBs, CSE and GSE, respectively. Fifty five percent of participants were men and mean (SD) age was 59 (12.1) years. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that CSE, GSE, education and BMI were the best predictors of HPBs, respectively. This model predicted 31% of HPB change (adjusted R2 = 0.31).Responsibility for health and spiritual growth motivates patients to apply HPBs. However, physical activity and stress management are least applied.

Cardiovascular Management Self-efficacy: Psychometric Properties of a New Scale and Its Usefulness in a Rehabilitation Context

Self-efficacy beliefs have been shown to affect various effective health-promoting behaviors in patients. Unfortunately, availability of reliable and valid measures of self-efficacy in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is still very limited. The aims of this study were to present a new scale measuring self-efficacy beliefs in managing CVD and to examine its psychometric properties. The study involved 172 patients (mean age = 66.4 years; SD = 9.99 years; 76.2% men) undergoing cardiovascular rehabilitation. Various psychological factors and CVD severity indicators were collected. An Exploratory Structural Equation Model showed that the Cardiovascular Management Self-efficacy Scale has three factors: Cardiac Risk Factors, Adherence to Therapy, and Recognition of Symptoms. They all showed high internal consistency, and good convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity. Furthermore, these factors showed significant relations with CVD severity indicators. The Cardiovascular Management Self-efficacy Scale could be a helpful instrument to monitor differences during interventions to improve good disease management.

An Explanatory Model for Health-Promoting Behaviors in Patients Living at Home who have Post Stroke Hemiplegia

A structural equation model was analyzed to explore the determinants of health-promoting behaviors in patients living at home in Korea who had post stroke hemiplegia. Demographic characteristics, activities of daily living, religiosity, family support, self-efficacy, acceptance of disability, perceived barriers to health-promoting activities, depression, and health-promoting behavioral data was collected from 239 patients using self-report questionnaires. Variables that have a direct effect on health-promoting behaviors were self-efficacy and family support. Depression, acceptance of disability, perceived barriers, activities of daily living and religiosity also influenced health-promoting behaviors in an indirect way. It is imperative to explore strategies for patients with post stroke hemiplegia to identify and maximize their resources, develop their self-efficacy, improve their emotional state, and enhance their physical activity and spiritual growth, which would maximize health-promoting behaviors.
