Priority Competencies for Designated Education Officers in the Veterans Health Administration.

Designated Education Officers (DEOs) at Veteran Health Administration (VHA) hospitals are senior educational leaders tasked with oversight of all clinical training at a particular facility. They prioritize dozens of tasks and responsibilities each day, from educational policy and strategy to staff management, financial planning, onboarding of trainees, and facility planning and management. Clarifying priority competencies for the role can help executives recruit, appoint, and evaluate capable personnel and promote effective, efficient performance. Using a federally developed method of competency analysis, researchers consulted a panel of subject-matter experts to identify priority competencies for DEOs, using data from a 2013 study that operationalizes competencies for more than 200 federal jobs. The research identified 25 primary competencies within 6 leadership domains. Five of the primary competencies cut across all leadership domains. Veteran Health Administration subject-matter experts in educational leadership say the identified competencies are urgently needed, critical for effective leadership, and valuable for distinguishing superior DEO performance. The competencies are relevant to VHA and perhaps other senior academic leaders who develop health professions education programs, oversee clinical training, and manage educational change. In military training facilities, attending to these competencies can help Designated Institutional Officials responsible for graduate medical education become more credible partners to other hospital leaders and contribute to becoming a high reliability organization. Executives identifying, recruiting, and appointing VHA DEOs and Designated Institutional Officials at military training facilities should consider these competencies when assessing candidates.

Patients as teachers: a within-subjects randomized pilot experiment of patient-led online learning modules for health professionals

PurposeMany health professions education programs involve people with lived experience as expert speakers. Such presentations may help learners better understand the realities of living with chronic illness or experiencing an acute health problem. However, lectures from only one or a small number of people may not adequately illustrate the perspectives and experiences of a diverse patient cohort. Additionally, logistical constraints such as public health restrictions or travel barriers may impede in-person presentations, particularly among people who have more restrictions on their time. Health professions education programs may benefit from understanding the potential effects of online patient-led presentations with a diverse set of speakers. We aimed to explore whether patient-led online learning modules about diabetes care would influence learners’ responses to clinical scenarios and to collect learners’ feedback about the modules.MethodThis within-subjects randomized experiment involved 26 third-year medical students at Université Laval in Quebec, Canada. Participation in the experiment was an optional component within a required course. Prior to the intervention, participating learners responded to three clinical scenarios randomly selected from a set of six such scenarios. Each participant responded to the other three scenarios after the intervention. The intervention consisted of patient-led online learning modules incorporating segments of narratives from 21 patient partners (11 racialized or Indigenous) describing why and how clinicians could provide patient-centered care. Working with clinical teachers and psychometric experts, we developed a scoring grid based on the biopsychosocial model and set 0.6 as a passing score. Independent evaluators, blinded to whether each response was collected before or after the intervention, then scored learners’ responses to scenarios using the grid. We used Fisher’s Exact test to compare proportions of passing scores before and after the intervention.ResultsLearners’ overall percentage of passing scores prior to the intervention was 66%. Following the intervention, the percentage of passing scores was 76% (p = 0.002). Overall, learners expressed appreciation and other positive feedback regarding the patient-led online learning modules.DiscussionFindings from this experiment suggest that learners can learn to provide better patient-centered care by watching patient-led online learning modules created in collaboration with a diversity of patient partners.

Implementation of Educational Opportunities for Social Determinants of Health in Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review

Objective Health professions programs have recently increased their efforts to educate health care professionals about the social determinants of health (SDH); however, there seems to be a disconnect between graduate medical education and its applicability to other peer health professions. The current scoping review aims to map the literature that explores the implementation of educational opportunities focused on SDH in health professions education programs. Data Sources PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, Education Source, and the Health Policy Reference Center were searched to identify relevant articles. Study Selection To be included in our review, articles had to have been published in the last 5 years and describe how material related to SDH was implemented into a graduate health professions education program. Outcomes were analyzed by thematic categories by type of curricular delivery (didactic, clinical education, service-learning experience, or reflection), timing of the implementation in the program, methods of implementation, and assessment after implementation. Data Extraction Our search identified 2006 articles that were reviewed by study authors; 36 were included in our full-text review. Information extracted included the study design, type of graduate education, aims of the studies, description of technique, timing of implementation, type of curricular delivery, and outcomes. Data Synthesis The majority (23, 63.9%) of studies used an observational design and used 2 or more (27, 75.0%) types of curricular delivery presented to medical students. Didactic (19, 52.8%) and small-group discussion (14, 38.9%) methods were used most often. Assessments were mostly student reflections or self-report items. Overall, students reported increased knowledge and satisfaction with activities. Conclusions Results of our scoping review indicated that various education opportunities related to SDH exist in graduate health professions education but are likely insufficient. More studies are necessary to investigate the purposeful implementation of SDH and the best methods to assess student knowledge of SDH. Future research should also investigate how to objectively assess student learning of SDH.

A scoping review of the questionnaires used for the assessment of the perception of undergraduate students of the learning environment in healthcare professions education programs.

The learning environment (LE) includes social interactions, organizational culture, structures, and physical and virtual spaces that influence the learning experiences of students. Despite numerous studies exploring the perception of healthcare professional students (HCPS) of their LE, the validity evidence of the utilized questionnaires remains unclear. This scoping review aimed to identify questionnaires used to examine the perception of undergraduate HCPS of their LE and to assess their validity evidence. Five key concepts were used: (1) higher education; (2) questionnaire; (3) LE; (4) perception; and (5) health professions (HP). PubMed, ERIC, ProQuest, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies developing or adapting questionnaires to examine LE. This review employed the APERA standards of validity evidence and Beckman et al. (J Gen Intern Med 20:1159-1164, 2005) interpretation of these standards according to 5 categories: content, internal structure, response process, relation to other variables, and consequences. Out of 41 questionnaires included in this review, the analysis revealed a predominant emphasis on content and internal structure categories. However, less than 10% of the included questionnaires provided information in relation to other variables, consequences, and response process categories. Most of the identified questionnaires received extensive coverage in the fields of medicine and nursing, followed by dentistry. This review identified diverse questionnaires utilized for examining the perception of students of their LE across different HPs. Given the limited validity evidence for existing questionnaires, future research should prioritize the development and validation of psychometric measures. This will ultimately ensure sound and evidence-based quality improvement measures of the LE in HP education programs.

Exploring a revised interprofessional learning curriculum in undergraduate health education programs at Linköping University

BackgroundInterprofessional education aiming at providing competencies require evaluation in order to ensure that outcomes match the needs and ambitions. Health professionals today need a broad range of skills and competencies in order to provide high quality care, including interprofessional competence. Linköping University has been a pioneer in interprofessional learning for decades and this study provides one example of how a curriculum revision can be carried out. The aim of this study was to study the intentions and outcomes of a revised interprofessional learning curriculum in health professions education programs.MethodsThis was a qualitative study, including documents (n = 143) and complementary interviews with key individuals (n = 4). Data included syllabuses, study guides, educational program plans, supervisor guides, and interview transcripts. A qualitative document analysis and a content analysis with a directed approach was used, applying a theoretical framework for curriculum development that guided the analysis.ResultsThe analysis resulted in one overarching theme named “A planned, lived, and attended curriculum” including four main categories inspired by a theoretical framework. The findings demonstrate a variety of aspects relating to the why and how of curriculum revision. The introduction of a programme director in interprofessional learning, with a mandate equal to respective program directors, seemed to contribute to legitimacy. Further, the partnership between the university and the healthcare sector had an impact on the curriculum revision, in that healthcare had a say in the revision regarding what suggestions to implement or not. The expectations of the teachers involved were high, although clear support structures seemed to be lacking.ConclusionsThis study has identified some of the important links between teachers, organizational prerequisites, and healthcare when revising an existing fully integrated curriculum in interprofessional learning for health professions education programs. The aim of this curriculum revision was to legitimize and provide education that is up to date with current healthcare needs and to provide students with competencies to collaborate in teams to ensure patient safety. When redesigning a curriculum there seems to be a fine balance between pedagogical innovation and pragmatism. This study identified that the links provided between organizational support structures and the expectations on teachers were not aligned.

Making judgments based on reported observations of trainee performance: a scoping review in Health Professions Education

Background: Educators now use reported observations when assessing trainees’ performance. Unfortunately, they have little information about how to design and implement assessments based on reported observations. Objective: The purpose of this scoping review was to map the literature on the use of reported observations in judging health professions education (HPE) trainees' performances. Methods: Arksey and O'Malley’s (2005) method was used with four databases (sources: ERIC, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO). Eligibility criteria for articles were: documents in English or French, including primary data, and initial or professional training; (2) training in an HPE program; (3) workplace-based assessment; and (4) assessment based on reported observations. The inclusion/exclusion, and data extraction steps were performed (agreement rate > 90%). We developed a data extraction grid to chart the data. Descriptive analyses were used to summarize quantitative data, and the authors conducted thematic analysis for qualitative data. Results: Based on 36 papers and 13 consultations, the team identified six steps characterizing trainee performance assessment based on reported observations in HPE: (1) making first contact, (2) observing and documenting the trainee performance, (3) collecting and completing assessment data, (4) aggregating assessment data, (5) inferring the level of competence, and (6) documenting and communicating the decision to the stakeholders. Discussion: The design and implementation of assessment based on reported observations is a first step towards a quality implementation by guiding educators and administrators responsible for graduating competent professionals. Future research might focus on understanding the context beyond assessor cognition to ensure the quality of meta-assessors’ decisions.

The benefits of breastfeeding for the health of the infant, the mother and the impact this has on public health in Brazil

Breastfeeding is a fundamental practice for a baby's health and proper development, offering a number of short- and long-term benefits for the baby and the mother. This natural form of feeding provides all the essential nutrients a baby needs in the first 6 months of life, promoting proper, healthy growth and strengthening the newborn's immune system. In nutritional terms, breast milk is a complete source of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins. Breastfeeding provides a deep emotional connection between mother and child, allowing the release of feel-good hormones, promoting an emotional bond and a sense of security and tranquillity for the baby. For mothers, breastfeeding also brings numerous benefits. The release of oxytocin during breastfeeding helps to reduce postpartum bleeding and increases contraction of the uterus, aiding postpartum recovery and preventing hemorrhage. Breastfeeding can help with post-pregnancy weight loss and reduce the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. The (WHO) and (UNICEF) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a baby's life, followed by the gradual introduction of complementary foods up to the age of two. However, despite the numerous benefits, many women face challenges to breastfeeding, including lack of support, returning to work and lack of information. It is therefore crucial to promote policies that support breastfeeding, such as paid maternity leave, breastfeeding-friendly workplaces and education programs for pregnant women and health professionals.

Perceived Success After Participation in the Summer Health Professions Education Program

The number of active health care professionals has not kept pace with the increasing number of minoritized individuals in the US. The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) was developed to alleviate this underrepresentation in the health workforce. To evaluate students' changes in perceived barriers and motivators for entering and succeeding in professional school after SHPEP participation. For this cohort study, anonymous electronic surveys were sent to the 2017 to 2021 SHPEP participants at an academic health center at a large university in the southern US. Participants were first- and second-year undergraduates interested in the health professions and enrolled in the SHPEP. Program participants were invited to complete the study. An anonymous electronic survey was administered before and immediately after program completion. The SHPEP Career Barriers Survey (SCBS) is composed of 22 questions on motivators and 20 questions on barriers to entering and succeeding in health professional school. Students responded using a 5-point Likert scale, with 1 indicating strongly disagree and 5 indicating strongly agree. Mixed analysis of variance was used to analyze the program's latent factors. Of all 402 SHPEP participants (mean [SD] age, 19.32 [0.88] years) from 2017 to 2021, 325 completed the preprogram survey and 259 also completed the postprogram survey. Of the 325 initial participants, 4 identified as American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander (1.2%); 12 as Asian (3.7%); 188 as Black (57.8%); 95 as Hispanic or Latino (29.2%); 7 as White (2.2%); and 16 as multiracial (4.9%). Two hundred twelve participants were female (65.2%), and 226 were first-generation college students (69.5%). Results of the SCBS indicate that the SHPEP had a significant small to moderate association on perceived motivators (mean [SD] x̅ = 84.60 [9.67] vs 80.95 [8.93]; P = .001) and decreases in perceived barriers (mean [SD] x̅ = 48.02 [13.20] vs 51.72 [11.39]; P = .008). There was no significant difference in program success between studied years. In this cohort study, the SHPEP appeared to provide essential support for underrepresented students as measured by improved perceived motivators and reduced perceived barriers to entering professional education. Knowledge from this study can assist educators and health care professionals who wish to implement similar enrichment programs.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on accredited programs and graduates who sat for the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification examination: graduates' perspective.

Students in health profession education programs were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic at both didactic and clinical training levels. The purpose for this American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) study was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on graduates. This study represents the perspectives of laboratory professional graduates who sat for the BOC certification in their respective professional disciplines. A survey was sent to all graduates from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited programs who sat for the ASCP BOC examination in 2020 and 2021 to determine the impact of COVID-19 on laboratory professional graduates during the pandemic. A total of 180 graduates responded to the survey. The majority of graduates indicated that at least 1 didactic program component was shifted to an online system during the pandemic and that both clinical and nonclinical student laboratories were affected. Although program completion for most graduates was not delayed, one-third of graduates delayed taking their respective BOC exam. Due to the lack of knowledge application through practical hands-on laboratory experience in their educational programs, graduates reported feeling a lack of readiness with regards to preparing for the national certification examination as well as for employment. The study results showed the pandemic greatly impacted the education experience and readiness for the ASCP BOC examinations for graduates. Factors such as the absence of in-person learning and hands-on experience-both crucial aspects in laboratory training-and the ripple effects as a result of the pandemic, such as job loss, financial constraints, and health concerns, contributed to the decreased quality of education for graduates.

Masters in health professions education programs as they choose to represent themselves: A website review

Introduction In an age of increasingly face-to-face, blended, and online Health Professions Education, students have more choices of institutions at which to study their degree. For an applicant, oftentimes, the first step is to learn more about a program through its website. Websites allow programs to convey their unique voice and to share their mission and values with others such as applicants, researchers, and academics. Additionally, as the number of master in health professions education (MHPE), or equivalent, programs rapidly grows, websites can share the priorities of these programs. Methods In this study, we conducted a website review of 158 MHPE websites to explore their geographical distributions, missions, educational concentrations, and various programmatic components. Results We compiled this information and synthesized pertinent aspects, such as program similarities and differences, or highlighted the omission of critical data. Conclusions Given that websites are often the first point of contact for prospective applicants, curious collaborators, and potential faculty, the digital image of MHPE programs matters. We believe our findings demonstrate opportunities for growth within institutions and assist the field in identifying the priorities of MHPE programs. As programs begin to shape their websites with more intentionality, they can reflect their relative divergence/convergence compared to other programs as they see fit and, therefore, attract individuals to best match this identity. Periodic reviews of the breadth of programs, such as those undergone here, are necessary to capture diversifying goals, and serves to help advance the field of MHPE as a whole.

Collaboration from a Distance: Remote Simulation in Hybrid Healthcare Education

Introduction: Simulation is an established method to teach interprofessional collaborative practice, but little is known about best practices when using simulation for remote learning activities in allied healthcare education. This mixed-methods study seeks to provide hybrid healthcare program educators with evidence regarding the effect of a remote simulation to address the topic of interprofessional collaboration. Methods: Authors investigated student self-assessed competency, satisfaction, and self-confidence in response to a remote learning activity in which Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students and licensed occupational therapists and speech language pathologists collaborated in a simulated pediatric case discussion via video-conferencing technology. The Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey-Revised and the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning scale were administered to 97 entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were completed to acquire student perception about the learning experience. Results: Results confirmed a significant increase in self-assessed collaborative competency attainment and students reported general levels of satisfaction and self-confidence in learning related to the interdisciplinary, remote simulated experience. Qualitative responses revealed three main themes: (1) unique interaction in a structured simulation experience, (2) ‘it was definitely a point of confirmation’, a learning experience, and (3) collaboration. Discussion: The use of remote healthcare simulation has the potential to improve interprofessional collaborative learning and practice among allied healthcare students. Faculty might consider the use of remote simulated experiences for the purpose of interprofessional learning in hybrid or online programs. Use of this teaching method within other groups of allied healthcare students should be examined. Implications for Practice Remote simulation can be an effective and satisfactory method of teaching interprofessional collaboration among allied healthcare students in hybrid programs. Quantitative and qualitative findings offer evidence that entry-level DPT students in hybrid programs value remote simulation as a learning opportunity and were engaged in the educational process. Faculty of hybrid allied health professional education programs may want to consider implementation of remote simulation for the purposes of interprofessional collaboration with the intent of readying students for practice.

The rapid growth and expansion of Master of health professions education (MHPE) programs: A mixed-methods study of international curricular trends and guidelines for programs

Purpose This study explores international trends and standards of Master’s degree programs through a comprehensive environmental scan and focus group interviews to understand curricular structure, content, program director expectations, educational context, and future directions. Method Authors conducted a two-phase mixed-methods sequential explanatory design to conduct the environmental scan (phase 1), and subsequently conducting focus groups (phase 2) with program directors. A population list of Master’s programs was used to generate a sampling frame, considering the geographic region (continent) and institution type (university, organization, public institution). Qualitative data were coded to analyze the breadth and depth of courses. Three one-hour virtual focus group interviews were conducted with ten program directors. Results The population list of 159 Masters programs worldwide was used to create a sample for analysis in the environmental scan (n = 46 Masters programs), representing programs from North America, Europe, Australia, and South Africa. Most programs (39%) delivered their courses online, with 20% exclusively offering an in-person program. Focus group participants indicated expectations of graduates, context in which they learn, as well as future directions for improving health professions education graduate programs. Conclusion Program directors should consider programmatic aims, localized needs, and quality/standard of the program in designing Masters programs, with individualized growth opportunities for learners.

The power to help or harm: student perceptions of transgender health education using a qualitative approach

BackgroundLack of transgender health education among health professional education programs is a limitation to providing gender-affirming care. Educational interventions have advanced in the past decade using a variety of pedagogical approaches. Although evidence supports that educational interventions can significantly improve student knowledge, comfort levels, preparedness, and clinical skills, few studies have addressed student perceptions of or receptiveness towards transgender health education. The study purpose was to explore student perceptions of transgender health education using a qualitative approach.MethodsWe utilized a basic qualitative design to explore student perceptions of transgender health education at a Catholic, Jesuit institution. Participants were medical students (n = 182), medical family therapy students (n = 8), speech, language and hearing sciences students (n = 44), and dietetic interns (n = 30) who participated in an Interprofessional Transgender Health Education Day (ITHED) in partnership with transgender educators and activists. Participants completed an online discussion assignment using eight discussion prompts specific to the ITHED sessions. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method and triangulated across four medical and allied health programs.ResultsA total of 263 participants provided 362 responses across eight discussion prompts. Three major themes resulted: (1) The Power to Help or Harm, (2) The Responsibility to Provide Health Care, and (3) A Posture of Humility: Listen and Learn. Each theme was supported by three to four subthemes.ConclusionsHealth professional students were highly receptive towards transgender health education delivered by transgender community members. First-person accounts from session facilitators of both positive and negative experiences in healthcare were particularly effective at illustrating the power of providers to help or harm transgender patients. Reflection and constructive dialogue offers students an opportunity to better understand the lived experiences of transgender patients and explore their identities as healthcare providers at the intersection of their religious and cultural beliefs.

Assessment of the Attitudes Toward Childbirth in Health Sciences Students–Turkish Adaptation of the Questionnaire CAVE-ST-TR

Background: Developing and improving education and training programs for future health professionals as a way to enhance perinatal care and reduce obstetric traumas is a necessity. Objective: The goal of the current study is to adapt a questionnaire that evaluates health science students’ attitudes toward women’s childbirth experiences (CAVE-ST; acronym is for cuestionario de actitudes sobre vivencias y experiencias en el parto) into Turkish and assess its psychometric properties. Method: The sample comprised 950 undergraduate students in midwifery departments in Turkey aged between 20 and 41 years (M = 22.42, SD = 1.79). Participants filled out the Demographic Information Form as well as CAVE-ST-TR. Item and scale content validity index (I-CVI and S-CVI), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Pearson’s correlation coefficients, Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient, and Guttman split-half coefficient were used to examine psychometric properties. Results: The results revealed that the 52-item and four-factor CAVE-ST-TR is a valid and reliable tool to assess health science students’ attitudes toward women’s childbirth experiences. Conclusion: This study would enhance the cross-cultural utility of the questionnaire.

Representation in Health Professions Education: Striving for an Inclusive Health Professions Education Community.

Author representation and inclusivity in health professions education (HPE) scholarship is receiving increasing attention in academic medicine, with multiple articles calling for greater equity related to gender, geographic, and institutional affiliations. Despite journal efforts to seek diversity, authors from high-income English-speaking countries are the most highly represented in HPE scholarship. Less attention, however, has been focused on the openness of medical education scholars, themselves, to engaging in international collaborations with authors and institutions from low-and-middle income countries. This eye-opener is inspired by the authors' personal experiences in HPE scholarship from an international medical educator perspective and advocates for the creation of an open and inclusive multinational medical education community. We offer suggestions that can help create opportunities for networking, collaboration, and promoting a sense of belonging among HPE scholars worldwide. As researchers, journal editors and associate editors, and faculty in HPE programs, we can work together to create a welcoming and accommodating environment that embraces non-dominant voices and perspectives, with the ultimate goal of achieving diversity and equity in HPE scholarship.

Development of Health Professions Education Competencies for a National Fellowship Program: A Group Consensus Process.

Health professions educators need knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide high-quality education within dynamic clinical learning environments. Although postgraduate training opportunities in health professions education (HPE) have increased significantly, no shared competencies exist across the field. This article describes the systematic development of postgraduate HPE competencies for the Health Professions Education, Evaluation, and Research (HPEER) Advanced Fellowship, a 2-year, interprofessional, post-master's degree and postdoctoral HPE training program funded through the Department of Veterans Affairs' Office of Academic Affiliations. Using a modified RAND/University of California at Los Angeles Appropriateness Method, the authors developed competencies from March 2021 to August 2021 that were informed by current practices and standards in HPE. Literature reviews were conducted of published literature from November 2020 to February 2021 and gray literature from February to March 2021, identifying 78 and 274 HPE training competencies, respectively. These competencies were combined with 71 competencies submitted by program faculty from 6 HPEER fellowship sites, resulting in 423 initial competencies. Competencies were organized into 6 primary domains and condensed by deleting redundant items and combining overlapping concepts. Eight subject matter experts completed 3 Delphi surveys and met during 2 nominal group technique meetings. The final 25 competencies spanned 6 domains: teaching methods and learning theories; educational assessment and program evaluation; educational research methods; diversity, equity, and inclusion; interprofessional practice and team science; and leadership and management. In addition to informing the national HPEER curriculum, program evaluation, and learner assessment, these advanced competencies describe the knowledge, skills, and attitudes health professions educators need to provide high-quality education with an emphasis on the global and societal impact of HPE. These competencies represent a step toward leveraging HPE expertise to establish competencies to drive HPE program changes. Other programs should report their competencies and competency development processes to spur further dialog and progress.

A separate article will be published on the graduates' perspective. A survey was sent to all PDs from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science, Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, accredited programs whose graduates are certified by the BOC, to determine the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare graduates and education programs during the pandemic. A total of 201 PDs responded. All programs consistently reported that the pandemic had a negative impact on their students' BOC pass rate and scores. When asked what educational formats were used, all groups used virtual live lectures and recorded lectures. University programs were found to use more online student laboratories and simulation laboratory sessions than the hospital programs, affecting the psychomotor skills of their students. The results indicated that the effects from the COVID-19 pandemic were related to the inherent differences between hospital and university programs. This study revealed that the pandemic affected university programs more than hospital programs.

Interprofessional Climate Change Curriculum in Health Professional Programs: A Scoping Review

Background: We conducted this scoping review to (1) comprehensively compile the published literature on interprofessional education focused on climate change and health, (2) assess the quality and outcomes of the existing curriculum interventions, and (3) highlight potential areas for further growth. By evaluating published curricular interventions, our goal was to highlight effective and validated developments that could be utilized by health professional educators seeking to include topics on climate change in the curriculum. Methods: We searched Ovid MEDLINE databases (MEDLINE, In-Process, In-Data-Review and Other Non-Indexed Citations, and Epub Ahead of Print), Embase, Clarivate Web of Science, and EBSCOhost Education Abstracts from inception through March 2023. Resulting articles were screened for relevance, and data were extracted from the included studies. The Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) was used to assess the quality of each included study. Findings: We screened 688 unique articles, and 6 met inclusion criteria. Publications dated from 2013 to 2023. Three studies included students or healthcare professionals from at least three health profession education programs. The mean MERSQI score was 8·17 (SD = 1·34; range 6–10). Curricular interventions varied by study, and topics included effects of climate change on human health, effect of climate change on extreme weather events and infectious disease exposures, and role of health professionals in climate change communication. Studies did not utilize a two-group comparison design. Most studies used an assessment tool with content validity evidence, but no study provided evidence of validity for internal structure or relationships to other variables. Studies reported that curricular interventions improved outcomes related to both climate change and interprofessional education. Interpretation: Despite the growing call for health professional education focused on climate change and health, there remains a gap in the interprofessional curricular interventions that have been assessed.

Training on Corrections and Health Within U.S. Academic Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review.

Despite the scale, inequity, and consequences of mass incarceration, health care provider knowledge and awareness on correctional health remain limited. Understanding the educational experiences of health professions learners and the studies used to evaluate them can provide useful information about current gaps to guide future curricular improvement. To address this need, we conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies examining United States-based academic health professions educational programs on correctional health. Studies were coded based on study characteristics, learner outcomes, and degree to which they contained elements described in relevant position statements by two professional medical associations. Overall, 27 articles (1975-2021) were included. Learner outcomes were primarily documented at the "reactions" (93%) and "learning" (52%) levels of the Kirkpatrick model (1979), relative to "behaviors" (11%) and "long-term outcomes" (0%). Comparison of curricula to select position statements revealed multiple content gaps in the realms of prevalent conditions requiring expertise (e.g., violence and self-harm); ethical and medical-legal considerations (e.g., privatization of correctional health care); and correctional health care systems, structures, and administration. Taken together, findings highlight gaps in, and opportunities for, correctional health educational programs. Addressing health care workforce training needs is a necessary yet insufficient step to achieving health equity for populations affected by incarceration.
