Orthodontist dressing: Its impact on patient perception and cooperation

Background and Aim: Communication skills, including non-verbal cues such as attire, play a significant role in patient perceptions of healthcare professionals. An orthodontist’s attire may influence patient cooperation during treatment. This study aims to investigate Nigerian orthodontic patients' perception regarding their orthodontists' dressing and its impact on patient cooperation. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among orthodontic patients at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire with 34 items was used to gather data from 131 participants. The questionnaire covered socio-demographic characteristics, understanding of the orthodontist's role, and preferences for the orthodontist's attire. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 26, with significance set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: The study included 131 patients (82 females and 49 males), with a mean age of 19.2 ± 9.43 years. Most participants (88.6%) liked how their orthodontists dressed, with 50.4% stating that their orthodontists wore traditional white coats and 42.7% indicating that their orthodontists wore scrubs. When asked about the significance of the orthodontist's dressing, 46.6% indicated that it mattered to them, while the majority stated that it did not affect their cooperation or review appointments. Conclusion: The study reveals that while orthodontic patients have preferences for their orthodontists’ appearance, it does not significantly affect their cooperation or review attendance. These findings suggest that while maintaining a professional appearance is important, it may not be a determining factor in patient compliance.

Understanding the benefits of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors and influence of hyperkalaemia on their prescription: a UK survey of healthcare professionals' views and practice

Abstract Background Renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) improve outcomes in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and they should be increased to the maximally tolerated dose. However, their use is often hindered by hyperkalaemia leading to discontinuation or down titration. Purpose Assess perceptions of primary and secondary healthcare professionals regarding benefits of RAASi according to indication and, in the context of developing hyperkalaemia, to identify barriers to optimal utilisation, and to explore options for improving management protocols, specifically in HFrEF. Methods An electronic survey was distributed in primary and secondary care setting in Hampshire, UK, to evaluate knowledge about benefits of RAASi, clinical response to varying level of potassium (K+), and decision-making using several clinical scenarios. Hyperkalaemia was graded into mild (serum K+ 5.5 – 5.9 mmol/L), moderate (serum K+ 6.0 – 6.4 mmol/L) or severe (serum K+ ≥ 6.5 mmol/L). Results Between November 2021 and January 2023, 300 questionnaires were completed by 274 (91%) physicians (varying grades of seniority), 22 (7%) non-medical prescribers, and 4 (1%) pharmacists. 80% were working in secondary care across different specialities (31 working in cardiology and 15 in nephrology). The majority were aware of prognostic benefit of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) in patients with HFrEF although this was lower for mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) (Fig 1). Fewer than 2/3 of respondents were aware of impact of ACEi on symptoms. In the presence of mild hyperkalaemia, 75% and 88% of healthcare professionals would stop or reduce ACEi and MRA, respectively. In moderate or severe hyperkalaemia, this increased to 96% and 97%, respectively (Fig 2A-B). When considering the scenario of a patient with HFrEF who had ACEi stopped due to K+ 5.9 mmol/L, the potassium at which the responder would consider re-starting the ACEi ranged from 77% when potassium level < 5.5 mmol/L to 1% in moderate or severe hyperkalaemia (Fig 2C). 74% of healthcare professionals were familiar with local hyperkalaemia management protocol and 93% supported dedicated training on RAASi dose adjustment and hyperkalaemia management. Conclusion This survey, across a broad range of healthcare professionals, shows uncertainties around knowledge of benefits of RAASi in patients with HFrEF and there is sizeable variation in the prescribing response to degrees of hyperkalaemia. Given the voluntary nature of the survey, it is plausible that these data are biased towards individuals with greater understanding. Regardless, there is a need for continued education with a goal of improving patient-centred care.

Healthcare professionals' knowledge and perceptions of post-stroke rehabilitation in the peripandemic period: an online cross-sectional survey.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected healthcare systems, particularly post-stroke rehabilitation centers. The elevated severity of strokes and delayed hospital admissions caused numerous hurdles to rehabilitation administration during the peri-pandemic period. This study surveyed healthcare professionals' knowledge and perceptions of post-stroke rehabilitation during this period. An online cross-sectional survey was administered from September 17, 2023 to February 23, 2024, utilizing the SurveyMonkey platform. The questionnaire included 30 questions addressing participant baseline characteristics, knowledge of definitions and experiences, post-stroke rehabilitation procedures, obstacles encountered during the peri-pandemic period, and the utilization of telerehabilitation. Only complete responses from health professionals were considered. This report utilized convenience sampling. Data were analyzed via descriptive statistics and chi-square tests, with a significance threshold of p < 0.05. A total of 79 health professionals, predominantly physiatrists, neurologists, and physiotherapists, from eight countries participated in the study. Over half of the participants (64.6%) indicated the existence of a dedicated department for post-stroke rehabilitation. Significant obstacles comprised an absence of advanced rehabilitative treatments (60.8%), inadequately skilled workers (50.6%), and restricted space for rehabilitation (46.8%). Telerehabilitation was regarded as a feasible option by 45.6% of participants; nonetheless, obstacles, including patients' telecommunication proficiency and the possibility of diagnostic inaccuracies, were acknowledged. Complementary therapies, such as music and dance therapy, received favorable evaluations from 67.1% to 63.3% of respondents, respectively. The pandemic reduced rehabilitation admissions due to infection concerns (75.9%) and increased multimorbidity cases among patients (48.1%). The study underscores the pandemic's negative effect on post-stroke rehabilitation, emphasizing the necessity for multidisciplinary, customized therapy and enhanced integration of telerehabilitation to overcome access barriers. Addressing obstacles regarding infrastructure, training, and access to advanced approaches, particularly in a post-pandemic context, is essential to improving rehabilitation outcomes.

The Decontamination of N95 Masks as an Occupational Safety Strategy

Objective: This study aimed to monitor the use of a short-wave ultraviolet (UV-C) decontamination device for N95 masks at the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital, Belém, Pará, Brazil. The research investigated the reuse of masks, storage methods, and the perception of healthcare professionals regarding the decontamination protocol using UV-C after each work shift. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on theories related to biosafety and occupational health, focusing on the importance of decontamination processes in hospital settings to enhance the protection of healthcare workers and reduce infection risks. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 295 nursing professionals, including nurses, technicians, and assistants. Data were collected through a questionnaire addressing the reuse of N95 masks, storage between uses, and opinions on the use of the UV-C device for decontamination. Results and Discussion: All participants (n=295) agreed that UV-C decontamination improves biosafety by reducing the handling of potentially contaminated masks. The acceptance of the device was unanimous, confirming its feasibility both in high-demand scenarios, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, and in routine hospital practices. Research Implications: This study demonstrates that implementing UV-C decontamination systems is a practical and effective solution for hospitals, with the potential to increase occupational safety and reduce infectious waste generation. Originality/Value: The study contributes to the literature by highlighting the feasibility and benefits of reusing N95 masks with UV-C decontamination, promoting greater safety in hospital environments.

The patient’s perspectives of safe and routine proactive deprescribing in primary care for older people living with polypharmacy: a qualitative study

BackgroundThe process of identifying and discontinuing medicines in instances in which harms outweigh benefits (deprescribing) can mitigate the negative consequences of problematic polypharmacy. This process should be conducted with a focus on the patient and involve collaborative decision-making. Evidence is needed regarding patients’ views on how deprescribing should be safely and routinely implemented in English primary care to improve its application. This study aimed to identify optimal methods of introducing and actioning deprescribing from the patient’s perspective.MethodsParticipants in England aged 65 and above who were taking five or more medicines and residing in their own homes were recruited through social media and service user groups. An interview guide was created from deprescribing literature and input from patients and the public, guided by the Normalisation Process Theory (NPT). The interviews were held online using Microsoft Teams® or via phone, recorded, and then transcribed. The data was analysed using the Framework analysis.ResultsTwenty patients (mean age of 74.5, SD = 6.93), with 75% being female, were enrolled in the study. Three main themes emerged: (1) ‘Why deprescribe now?’ emphasised the significance of explaining the reasons behind deprescribing; (2) ‘Monitoring and follow-up’ underscored the necessity of safety measures during deprescribing and patients’ willingness to self-monitor post-intervention; (3) ‘Roles and relationships’ explored patient perceptions of various healthcare professionals involved in deprescribing and the essential interpersonal skills for fostering therapeutic relationships.ConclusionOptimal methods of introducing deprescribing included communicating a convincing rationale for stopping medicines and preparing patients for deprescribing conversations. Patients required support from a range of healthcare professionals with whom they had an existing therapeutic relationship. Whilst patients were motivated to self-monitor unwanted/unexpected effects post-deprescribing, timely support was required. The nature of such bolstered collective action and cognitive participation within NPT enhances the normalisation potential of deprescribing. These findings highlight the significance of considering the content and process of deprescribing consultations to enhance normalisation and tackle problematic polypharmacy. This provides a deeper understanding of patients’ needs for implementing safe and routine deprescribing in primary care, which should be considered when designing medication review and deprescribing services.

Healthcare professionals' perceptions on providing support to informal carers within stroke care.

The sudden nature of stroke onset does not provide carers with sufficient time to prepare for the demands associated with caring. Healthcare professionals can have a vital role in providing carers with support and training, which may reduce carer stress and strain, and allow for better health and rehabilitation outcomes for the stroke survivor. The experiences of healthcare professionals on supporting carers in stroke care, however, remain unclear. To understand the experiences and perceptions of healthcare professionals working in stroke care on implementing resources and support to informal stroke carers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 healthcare professionals (5 occupational therapists, 5 physiotherapists, 1 psychologist) with at least 12 months' experience in working with stroke survivors. Interviews ranged from 25-70 minutes in duration, and were recorded, transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis. Three overarching categories that were explored were: (1) Experiences of working in stroke care and supporting carers; (2) Recommendations for a program designed for carers; and (3) Future priorities in stroke care. Participants discussed a variety of strategies they utilised to support carers including collaborating with other healthcare professionals and utilising skills and experience. Healthcare professionals highlighted the need for additional resources that are designed specifically for carers and explored key topics including carer stress and fatigue, support services, stroke education, and how to look after oneself. Participants identified priorities for stroke care including additional professional training and resource availability. This study provided a unique insight from the perspectives of healthcare professionals on supporting carers. Participants identified the need for additional training and resources to equip healthcare professionals to better support carers. Future programs designed for carers should be informed by the needs and experiences of both informal carers and healthcare professionals.

The effect of organizational culture in health services on employee flourishing.

Culture has an important role in maximizing the value of human capital, which is regarded as the main source of organizational effectiveness. The research was conducted to determine the effect of organizational culture perceptions of healthcare professionals working in a university hospital on employee flourishing. It is a descriptive study conducted with 299 healthcare professionals working in a university hospital. "Structured Personal Information Form", "Denison Organizational Culture Survey" and "New Flourishing Index" to collect the data. In the analysis descriptive statistical methods such as percentage, frequency, arithmetic mean and standard deviation as well as Pearson correlation, linear regression and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between variables. According to the results of linear regression analysis, it was determined that organizational culture and flourishing were related (F: 88.229; p < 0.05). The organizational culture alone explained 22.6% of flourishing. As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was determined that the relationship between organizational culture sub-dimensions and flourishing was significant (F = 25.975; p < 0.05). The sub-dimensions of organizational culture explained 25.1% of the flourishing. As a result of the study, it is observed that the perception of organizational culture of healthcare professionals has an impact on flourishing, and therefore the favorable development of organizational culture will contribute positively to employee flourishing. In present conditions, it has become a necessity for health organizations to provide the circumstances that will make all investments that will contribute positively to the flourishing of their employees a part of the organizational culture.

Perception of the Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Practices Among Healthcare Professionals in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform healthcare practices, but the successful adoption of AI depends on the perception and acceptance of healthcare professionals. This study aimed to assess the understanding of AI concepts, recognize the attitude toward AI integration, and identify the barriers to AI adoption among healthcare professionals in a tertiary care hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Chengalpattu district, India. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data on sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, attitude, and perceived barriers to AI adoption. The chi-square test was used to analyze the associations between variables. The majorityof the participants, i.e., 54% (n = 108), had moderate knowledge about AI adoption, while 48% (n = 96) had a low attitude toward it.Barriers to the adoption of AI in healthcare practices among healthcare professionals were low among the majority, i.e., 49% (n = 98), of the participants. A statistically significant association was found between knowledge and attitude (X² = 18.052, df = 4, p = 0.001), i.e., healthcare professionals with moderate knowledge levels had low attitudes toward the adoption of AI. A statistically significant association was also found between knowledge and perceived barriers (X² = 31.235, df = 4, p = 0.00), i.e., healthcare professionals with higher knowledge levels perceived lower barriers to the adoption of AI. The study highlights the need for education and training to improve knowledge, foster positive attitudes, and address the perceived barriers to AI adoption among healthcare professionals. Future research should focus on developing targeted interventions to enhance the understanding and acceptance of AI in healthcare practices.

Healthcare professionals perceptions towards the determinants of effective emergency health care services in public health centres of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

IntroductionEmergency healthcare services enable early detection and life-saving interventions for time-sensitive acute injuries and illnesses. The aim of this paper was to assess health care professional's perception towards determinants of effective emergency healthcare services in public health centers of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2023. MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted at public health centers in Addis Ababa with a sample of 422 study participants. Study participants were selected using simple random sampling techniques. To identify factors associated with the outcome variable, bi-variable and multi-variable logistic regression analyses were conducted. Variables having a p-value less than 0.05 in multi-variable logistic regression analysis were declared determinants of positive perception towards emergency medical services effectiveness. ResultsAmong the study participants, 76.3 % (95 % CI: 72.3, 80.6) had a positive perception towards the public health centers effectiveness in providing emergency healthcare services. Moreover, training (AOR: 4.05; 95 % CI: 1.97, 8.32), ICT service implementation (AOR: 6.55; 95 % CI: 3.37, 12.73), resource availability in the emergency department (AOR: 5.07; 95 % CI: 2.51, 10.25), and management support (AOR: 3.22; 95 % CI: 1.66, 6.25) were determinant factors associated with the perception of effectiveness in emergency medical care services. ConclusionNearly three-fourths of healthcare providers in Addis Ababa perceived that the emergency healthcare services were effective. Furthermore, training on patient service delivery, ICT service implementation, availability of resources in emergency departments, and management support were independent determinants of positive perception towards effective emergency healthcare services.

A systematic review of healthcare professionals and women's experiences and perceptions of colposcopy method of cervical cancer screening in Nigeria

Background: Cervical cancer continues to pose a significant public health issue in Nigeria, characterized by high rates of incidence and mortality. Colposcopy is integral to the cervical cancer screening process and its early detection. However, the uptake of colposcopy screening in Nigeria remains suboptimal, with various factors contributing to this phenomenon. Comprehending the experiences and perceptions of healthcare professionals and patients concerning colposcopy for cervical cancer screening is vital to enhance screening initiatives and alleviate the impact of cervical cancer in Nigeria. This systematic review aims to identify the gap in knowledge and synthesize the existing literature on the experiences and perceptions of healthcare professionals and patients regarding colposcopy for cervical cancer screening in Nigeria. Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted in Academic search elite, African journals online (AJOL), CINAHL, MBASE, psycho info, Cochrane, Medline (via PubMed) and Scopus databases from 2010 until March 2023. The quality of the included studies was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. Thematic analysis was deployed to synthesize the extracted data. Results: Fourteen (14) studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Most studies were conducted in developed countries and urban settings. The review revealed key themes that were categorized into four: insufficient knowledge/awareness, emotional factors, cultural/religious factors, and organizational/systemic factors. Conclusion: The review identified barriers to colposcopy screening in Nigeria, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to improve cervical cancer screening rates. Hence, the need for a qualitative study in rural parts of Nigeria to explore the in-depth understanding of patients' and healthcare professionals’ regarding colposcopy screening utilization.

Continuous Support from the Same Public Health Nurse and Parental Perception and Use of Health Care Services: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Continuity is considered essential for high-quality maternal and child health care services, but studies to show this effect on parental well-being are still rare. We studied whether receiving support from the same public health nurse has a beneficial effect on parental perceptions of health care professionals and the use of childcare support services. Maternal and child health care services were provided by different nurses in a Japanese municipality until March 2019. From April 2019, all families with infants received continuous support from the same assigned nurse. A questionnaire covering parental perception and the use of services was sent by postal mail to 1,341 families with infants. The data were analyzed using χ2-test, t-test and logistic regression producing odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Parental perceptions of the availability of professionals to discuss children's issues, the degree of understanding about available other childcare support services, the degree of utilizing other services, and satisfaction with health care services were higher in parents who received continuous support from the same assigned nurse compared to those who did not receive continuous support. Continuous support was associated with parental perceptions of the availability of professionals to discuss children's issues (OR = 1.97, 95% CI 1.34-2.91) and the degree of understanding about available other child-care support services (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.11-2.44) after adjusting the results for socioeconomic factors. Continuous support from the same assigned nurse has benefits for parents. This offers a cost-effective way to improve parental well-being.

Barriers and facilitators to using a clinical decision support tool for the management of osteoarthritis pain in patients undergoing hemodialysis: a qualitative study

BackgroundWhile osteoarthritis is a significant issue within the hemodialysis population and contributes to reduced quality of life, pain related to osteoarthritis is poorly managed by healthcare professionals (HCPs) in hemodialysis settings due to the absence of clinical guidance applicable to this population. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of HCPs on the barriers and facilitators to using a clinical decision support tool for osteoarthritis pain management in the hemodialysis setting.MethodsA qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Purposeful and snowball sampling techniques were used to recruit hemodialysis clinicians from academic and community settings across multiple Canadian provinces. One-to-one interviews were conducted with clinicians using a semi-structured, open ended interview guide informed by the Theoretical Domains Framework, a behavior change framework. A general inductive approach was applied to identify the main themes of barriers and facilitators.ResultsA total of 11 interviews were completed with 3 nephrologists, 2 nurse practitioners and 6 pharmacists. Findings revealed 6 main barriers and facilitators related to the use of the clinical decision support tool. Alignment of the tool with practice roles emerged as a key barrier and facilitator. Other barriers included challenges related to the dialysis environment, varying levels of clinician comfort with pain medications, and limited applicability of the tool due to patient factors. An important facilitator was the intrinsic motivation among clinicians to use the tool.ConclusionsMost participants across the included hemodialysis settings expressed satisfaction with the clinical decision support tool and acknowledged its overall potential for improving osteoarthritis pain management among patients on hemodialysis. Future implementation of the tool may be limited by existing roles and practices at different institutions. Increased collaboration among hemodialysis and primary care teams may promote uptake of the tool.

Assessment of practice and perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding the contribution of inappropriate pharmaceutical compounding to adverse drug events (ADEs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

IntroductionPharmaceutical compounding, a practice of tailoring medications to individual patient needs, is integral to healthcare but poses potential risks, including adverse drug events (ADEs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Understanding healthcare professionals' knowledge and perceptions on these issues is crucial for enhancing patient safety.ObjectivesThis study aimed to assess the practice and perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding the contribution of inappropriate pharmaceutical compounding to ADEs and AMR at Pawi General Hospital in the Metekel Zone, Benishangul-Gumuz Region.MethodsA crossectional study design was employed, involving a self-administered questionnaire distributed to healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, physicians, and nurses. STATA version 17 was used for analysis. Descriptive Analysis was used to summarize demographic characteristics of participants. The normality of the data was tested using a Shapiro wilk test. The mean standard deviations (SD) and percentages (%) of the variables were calculated.ResultsThe study was conducted among 120 healthcare professionals actively involved in patient care and pharmaceutical services within the hospital. The result of the study indicates varying levels of practice among healthcare professionals. The perceptions on the contribution of inappropriate compounding to ADEs and AMR differ across disciplines. The majority (75.83%) of the respondents deemed compounded medications in patient care as very important. A significant majority (61.67%) of respondents expressed being very concerned about the contribution of inappropriately compounded medication to AMR and ADEs.ConclusionsThis study indicated the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance healthcare professionals' understanding of inappropriate pharmaceutical compounding risks. The development of standardized training programs, regular updates on best practices, and collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals is essential for promoting patient safety, minimizing adverse events, and contributing to effective antimicrobial stewardship.

Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Medical Decision-Making for Ostomy Surgery in Pediatric IBD: Themes from Focus Groups.

Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic illness where patients may undergo ostomy surgery. Medical decision-making (MDM) for ostomy surgery is complex for patients/families and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (HCPs) alike, with current uncertainty about how multidisciplinary HCPs think about ostomy care to inform future interventions to facilitate equitable multidisciplinary care for patients. This study sought to understand pediatric IBD multidisciplinary HCPs' perceptions regarding ostomy-related MDM and education. Multidisciplinary HCPs (e.g., gastroenterology medical providers, social workers, surgeons, and ostomy nurses) participated in semi-structured focus groups. Focus group data underwent qualitative analysis to identify themes. Three multidisciplinary focus groups were conducted, with n = 12 participants across all groups. Qualitative analysis identified three main themes, including (1) HCP perceptions of ostomies, (2) Patient/family-related factors, and (3) Professional roles and collaboration challenges. Ostomy surgery in pediatric IBD requires complex multidisciplinary MDM and education. Perspectives of multidisciplinary HCPs identified patient, HCP, and systems factors that may impact MDM for ostomy surgery. This work highlights nuances in MDM and education in IBD, and the critical role of ongoing research and improved standardized processes to coordinate multidisciplinary ostomy-related MDM and education in this population.

Pharmacists' Medication Reconciliation Interventions During Admission and Transfer from an Emergency Department at a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Randomized Pilot Study and Evaluation of Physician and Patient Perceptions.

The study aimed to assess the impact of pharmacist interventions during the transition of care. Medication discrepancies can occur at various levels of transition, such as during admission, the transition from emergency to special wards or from special to general wards, and during discharge. Discrepancies can be detected through the process of medication reconciliation. The objective of the study was to compare discrepancies among patients exposed to pharmacist intervention groups and those who were not and assess the perception of healthcare professionals and patients towards integrating pharmacists in the transition care process. A pharmacist-led interventional study was conducted for six months on patients above 18 years of age and either sex who were admitted to the emergency department, had chronic diseases, and subsequently transferred to another department (any). The patients were randomized into intervention and control groups. The pharmacist performed a medication reconciliation and medication review to identify discrepancies in every transition in both the groups, and then reported to the treating physician to resolve in the intervention group. Among the 73 patients recruited in the study, 152 discrepancies were identified. The total discrepancies observed in the control and intervention groups were 78 (51.3%) and 74 (48.6%), respectively. The majority, 35.53%, were found during the transition from emergency to special wards. The physician, upon pharmacist recommendations, accepted and resolved 48 discrepancies in the intervention group. The healthcare professional acceptance rate of pharmacist interventions was 64.86%. The transitions of care are at risk for errors due to medication discrepancies, and pharmacists could potentially identify and resolve discrepancies. Healthcare professionals and patients reported to be satisfied by the involvement of clinical pharmacists in the healthcare team.

Osteopathy in the Italian healthcare landscape: Perceptions and areas of competence according to healthcare professionals

ObjectivesThe healthcare context aims to create a multidisciplinary culture that places the patient at the center of the care process, and osteopathy plays a significant and evolving role. This study aimed to examine the perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding the role of osteopathy in the Italian hospital healthcare setting. DesignThis cross-sectional observational study involved the collection of 327 questionnaires. Subsequently, data from 302 questionnaires were selected and evaluated in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. MethodsThe survey was conducted through a questionnaire specifically developed for the study and administered using Google Forms. The questionnaire included specific domains for the analysis of demographic data and data related to the perception of the osteopathic discipline. Electronic distribution of the survey was achieved through a snowball sampling approach, requiring participants' informed consent. ResultsRegarding the age distribution of the respondents, the majority fell within the 25–34 age bracket, constituting 37 % of the sample. When asked about their profession, the vast majority identified as nurses (80 %). It emerged that among the 203 respondents who confirmed seeking osteopathic consultation, the primary motivations were related to musculoskeletal disorders. DiscussionThe evolving healthcare landscape emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. Respondents show a strong inclination toward incorporating osteopathy into interdisciplinary care models. As healthcare shifts towards holistic, patient-centered models, including osteopathy in multidisciplinary teams could enhance therapeutic options and improve patient care quality.

TV medical dramas: assessing the portrayal of public health in primetime.

The influence of medical dramas could extend beyond the realm of entertainment and potentially strengthen/orient the knowledge, attitudes and hopefully practice of health professionals and the public, despite often depicting unrealistic medical outcomes and scenarios. This study examined the portrayal of public health issues in two popular international medical series, "Grey's Anatomy" and "House, MD," selected for their awards and viewership ratings. Individual episodes were double-rated by clinicians for patient characteristics, public health issues, and infection risk management. 94 episodes with 286 clinical cases were analyzed. A wide range of conditions and pathologies were depicted, with a focus on acute clinical events, trauma and mental disorders, which contrasts with real-life causes of hospitalization and highlight the dramatization in these series. Public health issues such as organ donation and substance abuse were frequently addressed, but prevention and health promotion received little attention. Proper use of personal protective equipment was mostly observed, although hand hygiene was underrepresented. The study highlights the dual role of medical dramas as an entertainment medium and a potential educational tool. While they can raise awareness and encourage healthier behavior, their portrayal of medical practices and patient care often deviates from reality and can create unrealistic expectations. The influence of these dramas also extends to viewers' perceptions of healthcare and medical professionals, underscoring the need for accurate and responsible portrayal of health issues in the media.

Cross-Sectional Analysis of Australian Dental Practitioners’ Perceptions of Teledentistry

INTRODUCTION: There has been an increased use of teledentistry by dental practitioners in Australia as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous studies conducted analysing the opinions of dental practitioners were performed prior to the pandemic, and therefore it is important to determine if perceptions regarding teledentistry have changed following the outbreak. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions of oral healthcare professionals regarding teledentistry in a clinical setting. METHODS: The cross-sectional study involved an anonymous electronic questionnaire with a sample of 152 dental practitioners. The questionnaire contained 28 questions utilizing a 5-point Likert-scale to assess the perceptions of general dentists on teledentistry regarding diagnosis, accessibility, patient care, technology and finances. Chi-squared test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyse the results and percentages of agreement and disagreement were calculated. RESULTS: The participants of the questionnaire believed that teledentistry was effective for consultations and in the diagnosis of simple cases. They indicated large benefits of teledentistry in improving access, delivering post-operative care, and triaging patients, and found it particularly useful during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the participants felt that teledentistry was ineffective in diagnosing complex cases such as pathology. Concerns were also raised regarding the interventional capacity of teledentistry, the quality of the technology, data security and medicolegal issues. In general, participants preferred in-person care in comparison with teledentistry. They were neutral regarding finance. CONCLUSION: The study provided an insight into the perceptions of Australian dental practitioners regarding teledentistry post-COVID-19. Opinions have changed slightly, but there are large hurdles still to overcome before teledentistry is more widely accepted. Research should be continued to further improve teledentistry in the future.
