Haptic rendering for the coupling between fluid and deformable object

It remains a challenging problem to simulate the haptic interaction between the fluid and deformable objects due to the inhomogeneity of the deformable object. In this paper, we present a novel position-based haptic interaction method to tackle this problem. On the one hand, according to the inhomogeneity of the deformable object, we calculate the properties of different regions of the deformable object and then evaluate its haptic force so as to make the results more realistic. On the other hand, to preserve more details of haptic feedback forces, we especially incorporate the calculation of buoyancy, pressure, viscous force and elastic force into our framework and design a novel integration scheme for assembling such forces. Moreover, by respecting the influence from fluid viscosity, our method can obtain different haptic force feedback for fluids of different viscosities. Various experiments validated our new method.

A Haptic Interaction Method Using Visual Information and Physically Based Modeling

Haptic feedback can be used to sense a physical environment at a remote site in order to overcome spatial or scale barriers in telemanipulation. The aim of this paper is to develop a haptic interaction method for a deformable object manipulation system by means of image processing and physically based modeling techniques. The interaction forces between the instrument driven by a haptic device and a deformable object are inferred in real time based on the visual information from a slave environment without force sensor. A physically based model of the deformable object is constructed by integrating the geometric information from vision, a priori knowledge of the object mechanical properties, and a predefined coordinate system of the slave environment. The forces are then derived from the model, while a boundary condition is updated based on the images (a tool-tip position tracking). In order to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, macro- and microscale experimental systems were built and equipped with a telemanipulation system and a commercial haptic display. The proposed method was verified using silicone (macroscale) and zebrafish embryos (microscale).

A Six Degree-of-Freedom God-Object Method for Haptic Display of Rigid Bodies with Surface Properties

This paper describes a generalization of the god-object method for haptic interaction between rigid bodies. Our approach separates the computation of the motion of the six degree-of-freedom god-object from the computation of the force applied to the user. The motion of the god-object is computed using continuous collision detection and constraint-based quasi-statics, which enables high-quality haptic interaction between contacting rigid bodies. The force applied to the user is computed using a novel constraint-based quasi-static approach, which allows us to suppress force artifacts typically found in previous methods. The constraint-based force applied to the user, which handles any number of simultaneous contact points, is computed within a few microseconds, while the update of the configuration of the rigid god-object is performed within a few milliseconds for rigid bodies containing up to tens of thousands of triangles. Our approach has been successfully tested on complex benchmarks. Our results show that the separation into asynchronous processes allows us to satisfy the different update rates required by the haptic and visual displays. Force shading and textures can be added and enlarge the range of haptic perception of a virtual environment. This paper is an extension of [1].
