Realms Beyond

This article explores a mysterious but well-studied pictorial subject in Chinese visual art, namely the half-open door. The scene often shows a female figure standing in or emerging from the middle of two door-leaves, suggesting a path or an access to a certain space and also indicating a view incompatible with what the viewer has already seen. This pictorial theme frequently adorns stone sarcophagi and tomb walls in northern China from the late eleventh to the thirteenth centuries. By examining the forms and meanings of the motif, this study attempts to demonstrate the ways in which the half-open door was employed in funerary art and helped people to visualize prevailing ideas about the afterlife.

Pushing at a Half-open Door

This article describes a process of working in Cambodia with a small group of individuals and organisations who identified learning as an essential component of their approach to capacity development. Over a six‐month period, group members used the Learning Inquiry Process developed as part of the work of the project ‘Facilitating Learning in Action for Social Change’ to reflect on and deepen their understanding of both how they learn in their work and effective ways to facilitate the learning of others. The article shows the extent of the gulf between the theory and practices of learning in the context of social change, and the difficulty for practitioners of making space for learning practices. It shows that where there is readiness for learning, the responsive application of an appropriate framework can help guide and identify learning.

Forging the endothelium during inflammation: pushing at a half-open door?

During an inflammatory response, changes in the adhesive properties of the endothelium occur that enable normally non-adherent blood-borne leukocytes to adhere and subsequently to traverse the endothelium through small gaps at inter-cellular junctions. This review concentrates on the role played by inter-endothelial adhesion molecules during transmigration and the way in which their expression may be regulated during inflammation. We show that the final "open" signals that lead to the formation of clefts between adjacent endothelial cells may be derived from inflamed tissue underlying the endothelium and from activated leukocytes.

The Challenges of Stabilizing and Rebuilding the Balkans, by Nebojsa Vukadinovic The end of the Kosovo crisis has given way to an international will to stabilize and rebuild the Balkans. Now the challenges involved in these two processes diverge on many points and could easily ignore the local realities of the countries in the region. The Balkan Stability Pact, which encompasses all the international initiatives taken on behalf of Southeastern Europe and which aims to reconstitute sub-regions, may also become an additional initiative without any real impact. Yet in the Balkan countries it represents a half-open door to the European Union. Moreover, the reconstruction that has been announced is tending towards a fragmented approach, given the specifie features of each country concerned. New cases of destabilization may resuit from this discrepancy between reconstitution and break-up.

Sigurd Lewerentz and the 'Half-Open Door'

The importance of the Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975) to the development of the Modern Movement has only recently been recognized. Following Lewerentz’s confirmation at the age of eighteen he was a life-long Bible-reading Lutheran, the established religion in Sweden, and Lewerentz’s well known churches are testimony to his ability to design sacred space which reinterpreted the Lutheran mass. It is within this scriptural context, albeit modified by Swedish cremation policy, that this article examines probably the most famous and monumental of Lewerentz’s works, the Woodland cemetery and crematorium, Stockholm (the Skogskyrkogarden).

Indoor pollution from heating.

The concentrations of indoor pollutants generated from types of heaters were measured in a model room of 20m2 in area and 45m3 in capacity. We used six different heaters: three kerosene heaters of different types, town and propane gas heaters, and an electric heater. Three ventilation conditions were introduced into each experiment: non-ventilation, fan-on ventilation with closed door and fan-off ventilation with half-opened door. The results obtained by heating under non-ventilation condition were as follows: The concentrations of NO2 and CO2 were comparatively high and the values obtained from all the heaters except the electric heater exceeded the 1-hr Environmental Quality Standards, Japan (EQS NO2: 0.04-0.06 ppm) and the Building Sanitation Management Standards, Japan (BSMS CO2: 1,000 ppm), respectively. The CO concentration emitted from reflection kerosene and town gas heaters slightly exceeded the BSMS (10 ppm). The concentrations of suspended particulate matter and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons showed an increasing tendency during the use of kerosene-fueled heaters. Under two ventilating conditions, NOx concentration decreased to less than a third in comparison with non-ventilating condition.

The history of U.S. acceptance of refugees since the end of World War II is described. The authors attempt to show that although the United States has absorbed over two million refugees in this period the bias has been heavily in favor of refugees from left-wing countries. They suggest that despite the neutral standard set by the Refugee Act the federal authorities continue to discriminate against refugees from right-wing countries. The links between U.S. foreign policy and refugee policies are noted. (ANNOTATION)
