Condition for metal fragmentation during Earth-forming collisions

The long-term evolution of the deep Earth depends on its initial temperature and composition. These were set by the large planetary collisions that formed the Earth. After each collision, the metallic core of the impactor fell into a molten silicate magma ocean. Previous investigations showed that, as it sank, the impactor core fragmented into drops. The overall fragmentation of the core controlled the efficiency of chemical transfers between the impactor metal and the magma ocean, and, as a consequence, the composition of the Earth's core and mantle. However, because previous studies lack an impact stage, it is unclear whether the projectile core fragmented during the impact at Earth's surface, or deeper in the magma ocean.To answer this question, we conduct laboratory experiments modeling the collision of differentiated and undifferentiated impactors. In a first series of experiments, we investigate the impact of an undifferentiated centimetric liquid volume, representing the impactor core, onto a lighter immiscible liquid, representing the magma ocean. Our experiments approach the dynamical regime of planetary collisions for which inertia is large compared to surface tension. Varying the velocity and size of the impactor, we determine the conditions under which the impactor fragments into drops. We find that fragmentation occurs when the Froude number, which measures the relative importance of inertia to gravity, is larger than 40, regardless of surface tension. This fragmentation results from the growth of a turbulent Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the interface between the impacting liquid and the target pool. In contrast, when Fr<10, the impactor remains coherent. In a second series of experiments, we use two-phase impactors to show that these results hold for impactors that are differentiated into a core and a mantle.Applied to planet formation, our results suggest that the core of impactors less than 330 km in radius impacting at the escape velocity onto an Earth-sized planet fully fragments into droplets during the impact process, whereas the core of a giant Mars-sized impactor remains coherent. We derive a model for the depth at which the impactor core fragments in the magma ocean as a function of the impactor size and velocity. This model predicts that impactors with a radius less than 800 km fully fragment before reaching the bottom of the magma ocean. For velocities higher than twice the escape speed, some degree of fragmentation is unavoidable for any impactor size.

The Effect of Spatially Varying Collision Frequency on the Development of the Rayleigh–Taylor Instability

The Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability is ubiquitously observed, yet has traditionally been studied using ideal fluid models. Collisionality can vary strongly across the fluid interface, and previous work demonstrates the necessity of kinetic models to completely capture dynamics in certain collisional regimes. Where previous kinetic simulations used spatially and temporally constant collision frequency, this work presents five-dimensional (two spatial, three velocity dimensions) continuum-kinetic simulations of the RT instability using a more realistic spatially varying collision frequency. Three cases of collisional variation are explored for two Atwood numbers: low to intermediate, intermediate to high, and low to high. The low-to-intermediate case exhibits no RT instability growth, while the intermediate-to-high case is similar to a fluid-limit kinetic case with interface widening biased toward the lower-collisionality region. A novel contribution of this work is the low-to-high collisionality case that shows significantly altered instability growth through an upward movement of the interface and damped spike growth due to increased free-streaming particle diffusion in the lower region. Contributions to the energy flux from the non-Maxwellian portions of the distribution function are not accessible to fluid models and are greatest in magnitude in the spike and regions of low collisionality. Increasing the Atwood number results in greater RT instability growth and reduced upward interface movement. Deviation of the distribution function from Maxwellian is inversely proportional to collision frequency and concentrated around the fluid interface. The linear phase of RT instability growth is well described by theoretical linear growth rates accounting for viscosity and diffusion.

Self-similar Reynolds-averaged mechanical–scalar turbulence models for reshocked Richtmyer–Meshkov instability-induced mixing in the small Atwood number limit

Analytical self-similar solutions to two-, three-, and four-equation Reynolds-averaged mechanical–scalar turbulence models describing incompressible turbulent Richtmyer–Meshkov instability-induced mixing in planar geometry derived in the small Atwood number limit [O. Schilling, “Self-similar Reynolds-averaged mechanical–scalar turbulence models for Rayleigh–Taylor, Richtmyer–Meshkov, and Kelvin–Helmholtz instability-induced mixing in the small Atwood number limit,” Phys. Fluids 33, 085129 (2021)] are extended to construct models for reshocked Richtmyer–Meshkov mixing. The models are based on the turbulent kinetic energy K and its dissipation rate ε, together with the scalar variance S and its dissipation rate χ modeled either differentially or algebraically. The three- and four-equation models allow for a simultaneous description of mechanical and scalar mixing, i.e., mixing layer growth and molecular mixing. Mixing layer growth parameters and other physical observables were obtained explicitly as functions of the model coefficients and were used to calibrate the model coefficients. Here, the solutions for the singly shocked Richtmyer–Meshkov case for the mixing layer width and the turbulent fields are used to construct piecewise-continuous generalizations of these quantities for times after reshock. For generality, the post-reshock mixing layer width is not assumed to grow with the same power-law as the pre-reshock width, and an impulsive approximation applied to Rayleigh–Taylor instability growth is used to establish the expression for the post-reshock width. A four-equation model is then used to illustrate the spatiotemporal behavior of the mean and turbulent fields and late-time turbulent equation budgets across the mixing layer. The reference solutions derived here can provide systematic calibrations and better understanding of mechanical–scalar turbulence models and their predictions for reshocked Richtmyer–Meshkov instability-induced turbulent mixing in the very large Reynolds number limit.

Growth of ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability induced by time-varying heat-flux perturbation

The evolution of ablative Rayleigh–Taylor instability (ARTI) induced by single-mode stationary and time-varying perturbations in heat flux is studied numerically in two dimensions. Compared with the stationary case, time-varying heat-flux perturbation mitigates ARTI growth because of the enhanced thermal smoothing induced by the wave-like traveling heat flux. A resonance is found to form when the phase velocity of the heat-flux perturbation matches the average sound speed in the ablation region. In the resonant regime, the coherent density and temperature fluctuations enhance the electron thermal conduction in the ablation region and lead to larger ablation pressure and effective acceleration, which consequently yield higher linear growth rate and saturated bubble velocity. The enhanced effective acceleration offers increased implosion velocity but can also compromise the integrity of inertial confinement fusion shells by causing faster ARTI growth.

Generation and evolution of post-sunset equatorial plasma bubbles in East and Southeast Asia during the July 2022 geomagnetic storm

In the East and Southeast Asia, equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) mainly occur at post-sunset in equinoctial months. On 7–8 July 2022, a moderate geomagnetic storm occurred, with minimum Dst of −85 nT. This storm could trigger unseasonal post-sunset EPBs over the East/Southeast Asian sector. Observations from GNSS TEC/scintillation receivers, VHF coherent radar and ionosonde show that on 7 July, a few clusters of EPBs, which caused strong amplitude scintillations and significant TEC fluctuations, occurred over a wide latitude range, from low to middle latitudes up to ∼ 32°N. The EPB irregularities at middle latitudes drifted westward, with velocities of about 97 m/s. Before the generation of EPBs, apparent background ionospheric disturbances were detected. An abrupt rise of ionospheric F layer, with upward drifts of about 33 m/s was observed near sunset at low latitudes. It is suggested that the moderate geomagnetic storm was the main reason for the generation of unseasonal post-sunset EPBs. The prompt penetration of eastward electric field caused by the geomagnetic storm could lead to the abrupt rise of F layer near sunset and promote the growth of Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The background ionospheric disturbance could act as a seeding role for the unseasonal EPBs.

Intensification and Weakening of Equatorial Plasma Bubble Development Observed by GOLD During Different Phases of a Geomagnetic Storm

AbstractEquatorial plasma bubble (EPB) development during different phases of the geomagnetic storm of 3–4 November 2021 (SYMHmin = −118 nT) was examined using observations and simulations. The initial phase of the storm coincided with postsunset (about 30 min after sunset) at Fortaleza (FZ) and São Luís (SL) with longitudes of ∼38.45°W and ∼44°W respectively on November 3 while the recovery phase of the storm started at 12:45 UT on November 4. GOLD shows the longest (shortest) extension of EPBs on November 3 (4) compared to days before and after November 3 and 4, including quiet days. This indicates an intensification (weakening) of EPBs on November 3 (4). From ionosondes at FZ and SL, a strong (weak) range spread F (SSF (RSF)) was observed on November 3 (4). The postsunset peak F layer height on November 3 reached 450 km and exceeded the preceding and succeeding days by ∼50–100 km at SL indicating the presence of a Prompt Penetration Electric Field (PPEF) which enhanced EPB development via the favorable postsunset vertical E x B and Rayleigh‐Taylor instability (RTI) mechanisms on November 3. The lower‐than‐quiet time F layer height observed on November 4 during Pre‐reversal enhancement (PRE) indicates the presence of a westward‐oriented Disturbance Dynamo Electric Field (DDEF) that undermined RTI growth and led to the weakening of EPB development. Simulation results confirm that the storm‐time electric fields modified the evening‐time ionosphere and influenced the magnitude of vertical E x B drift required for the development of EPBs.

Mitigation of deceleration-phase Rayleigh–Taylor instability growth in inertial confinement fusion implosions

Rayleigh–Taylor growth during shell deceleration is one of the main limiting factors for target performance in inertial confinement fusion implosions. Using analytical scaling laws and hydrodynamic simulations, we show that such amplification can be mitigated by reducing the initial mass density in the central target region. The perturbation growth reduction is caused by a smaller hot-spot convergence ratio during deceleration, increased density scale length, and enhanced ablation stabilization. The required central density reduction can be achieved using the dynamic shell formation concept.

A Level Set-Based Solver for Two-Phase Incompressible Flows: Extension to Magnetic Fluids

Development of a two-phase incompressible solver for magnetic flows in the magnetostatic case is presented. The proposed numerical toolkit couples the Navier–Stokes equations of hydrodynamics with Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism to model the behaviour of magnetic flows in the presence of a magnetic field. To this end, a rigorous implementation of a second-order two-phase solver for incompressible nonmagnetic flows is introduced first. This solver is implemented in the finite-difference framework, where a fifth-order conservative level set method is employed to capture the evolution of the interface, along with an incompressible solver based on the projection scheme to model the fluids. The solver demonstrates excellent performance even with high density ratios across the interface (Atwood number ≈ 1 ), while effectively preserving the mass conservation property. Subsequently, the numerical discretisation of Maxwell's equations under the magnetostatic assumption is described in detail, utilising the vector potential formulation. The primary second-order solver for two-phase flows is extended to the case of magnetic flows, by incorporating the Lorentz force into the momentum equation, accounting for high magnetic permeability ratios across the interface. The implemented solver is then utilised for examining the deformation of ferrofluid droplets in both quiescent and shear flow regimes across various susceptibility values of the droplets. The results suggest that increasing the susceptibility value of the ferrofluid droplet can affect its deformation and rotation in low capillary regimes. In higher capillary flows, increasing the magnetic permeability jump across the interface can further lead to droplet breakup as well. The effect of this property is also investigated for the Rayleigh–Taylor instability growth in magnetic fluids.

Hydrodynamic instabilities, the most significant of which is Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI), play a significant role in many physical phenomena. So how to decrease the growth rate of these instabilities is an important purpose in ICF fuel targets. In this research, reducing the growth rate of RTI for various fusion fuel targets has been investigated in two stages: First, it is indicated that applying different nanostructured porous linings at the ablation front of them in the absence of a strong magnetic field causes to decrease RTI growth rate and second, it is shown that using various nanostructured porous linings at the ablation front of these targets accompanying magnetic field exerting to the ablative surface of them, leads to more reduction of RTI growth rate. In both of these two phases, RTI growth rate is acquired analytically using conservation equations, boundary conditions and approximate methods and it is indicated that applying nanostructured porous linings and exerting a powerful magnetic field, will decrease RTI growth rate.

An investigation of the multi-mode Richtmyer-Meshkov instability at a gas/HE interface using Pagosa

In this work, we present a hydrocode Pagosa and explore the Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability (RMI) at an air/high explosive (HE) interface for the first time that is important but has not received much attention yet in the high explosive safety field. Thus, the presented Pagosa can be expected to predict the whole deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) process in future. In Pagosa, spatial discretization is implemented on cubic staggered grids by computing different variables at the vertex and the cell center, respectively, a special operator-splitting technique is employed to reduce the computational cost, and an artificial viscosity is added to handle the discontinuous shock waves in our simulations. To quantitatively evaluate the capability of Pagosa to solve these kinds of instabilities, the single mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and the multimode RMI at an air/SF 6 interface are first performed, respectively. The Pagosa results are compared with the related numerical solutions in the existing references and the experimental result. Moreover, a theoretical derivation of growth of RTI is also provided based on our numerical method. Subsequently, we explore the multi-mode RMI at an air/HE interface as well as the effects of several factors using Pagosa. Numerical results show that Pagosa is a powerful toolset to generate the right structures and the amplitude of RTI and RMI at an air/SF 6 interface. The solid HE can be penetrated by a strong shock wave and forms RMI deformations. The RMI at an air/HE interface behaves very different than at an air/SF 6 interface, periodic, decreased oscillation is observed due to material character, and is very sensitive to the initial simulation settings, that is, a tiny change in physical quantities will lead to a remarkable RMI structure, which is also observed in a shock bubble interaction [41] . The findings in this work are significant, and will present a new insight for the high explosive field. • An enhanced model Pagosa is presented with some special techniques. • Pagosa's capability to accurately capture the RTI at an air/SF 6 interface. • Pagosa's ability to accurately predict the RMI at an air/SF 6 interface. • The RMI at an air/HE interface is different from that at an air/SF 6 interface. • Effects of several factors on RMI at an air/HE interface.

Multi-instrumental analysis of the day-to-day variability of equatorial plasma bubbles

This paper presents a multi-instrument observational analysis of the equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) variation over the American sector during a geomagnetically quiet time period of 07–10 December 2019. The day-to-day variability of EPBs and their underlying drivers are investigated through coordinately utilizing the Global-scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) ultraviolet images, the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) in-situ and remote sensing data, the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) total electron content (TEC) observations, as well as ionosonde measurements. The main results are as follows: 1) The postsunset EPBs’ intensity exhibited a large day-to-day variation in the same UT intervals, which was fairly noticeable in the evening of December 07, yet considerably suppressed on December 08 and 09, and then dramatically revived and enhanced on December 10. 2) The postsunset linear Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rate exhibited a different variation pattern. It had a relatively modest peak value on December 07 and 08, yet a larger peak value on December 09 and 10. There was a 2-h time lag of the growth rate peak time in the evening of December 09 from other nights. This analysis did not show an exact one-to-one relationship between the peak growth rate and the observed EPBs intensity. 3) The EPBs’ day-to-day variation has a better agreement with that of traveling ionospheric disturbances and atmospheric gravity waves signatures, which exhibited relatively strong wavelike perturbations preceding/accompanying the observed EPBs on December 07 and 10 yet relatively weak fluctuations on December 08 and 09. These coordinate observations indicate that the initial wavelike seeding perturbations associated with AGWs, together with the catalyzing factor of the instability growth rate, collectively played important roles to modulate the day-to-day variation of EPBs. A strong seeding perturbation could effectively compensate for a moderate strength of Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rate and therefore their combined effect could facilitate EPB development. Lacking proper seeding perturbations would make it a more inefficient process for the development of EPBs, especially with a delayed peak value of Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rate.

Relationships between ionospheric parameters derived from ionosonde observations and characteristics of post-sunset GHz scintillation during high solar activities (2012−2013) at Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E), China

In this study, we presented the characteristics of post-sunset GHz scintillation occurrence and ionospheric parameters derived from ionosonde observations, including the critical frequency of F2-layer (foF2), peak height of F2-layer (hmF2), minimum virtual height of F-layer (h’F), scale height around the F2-layer peak (Hm), virtual height (h’F5) and true height (hF5) measured at 5 MHz, in high solar activity years (2012-2013) of solar cycle 24 at Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E; dip lat.: 12.8°N), China. Furthermore, we investigated the relationships between the equinoctial asymmetry of scintillation and these ionospheric parameters. In addition, the growth rates of Rayleigh-Taylor instability were calculated on the basis of the ionosonde measurements and models, respectively. The results showed that the equinoctial asymmetry of scintillation onset time would be associated with the scale length of vertical electron density gradient (L), which affects the growth of Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the bottom of F-layer. The seasonal variations of foF2, Hm and scale length of vertical electron density gradient would be the reason to cause the seasonal variations of scintillation occurrence, and the equinoctial asymmetry of scintillation occurrence rate over low latitude can be related to the background electron density and the vertical drifts around sunset in F-layer. The correlations between the scintillation strength represented by the daily maximum S4 and the daily maximum values of foF2, hmF2, h’F, Hm, and also the drifts over low latitudes were weak, which need to be further studied.

Shock-Augmented Ignition Approach to Laser Inertial Fusion

Shock ignition enables high gain at low implosion velocity, reducing ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth, which can degrade conventional direct drive. With this method, driving a strong shock requires high laser power and intensity, resulting in inefficiencies in the drive and the generation of hot electrons that can preheat the fuel. A new "shock-augmented ignition" pulse shape is described that, by preconditioning the ablation plasma before launching a strong shock, enables the shock ignition of thermonuclear fuel, but importantly, with substantially reduced laser power and intensity requirements. The reduced intensity requirement with respect to shock ignition limits laser-plasma instabilities, such as stimulated Raman and Brillouin scatter, reducing the risk of hot-electron preheat and restoring the laser coupling advantages of conventional direct drive. Simulations indicate that, due to the reduced power requirements, high gain (∼100) ignition of large-scale direct drive implosions (outer radius ∼1750 μm, deuterium-tritium ice thickness ∼165 μm) may be possible within the power and energy limits of existing facilities such as the National Ignition Facility. Moreover, this concept extends to indirect drive implosions, which exhibit substantial yield increases at reduced implosion velocity. Shock-augmented ignition expands the viable design space of laser inertial fusion.

Benchmarking solid-to-plasma transition modeling for inertial confinement fusion laser-imprint with a pump-probe experiment

For laser direct-drive (LDD) fusion implosions, intense laser beams are used to directly illuminate the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) capsule. The laser beams' intensity nonuniformity (due to speckles) on the target can impose perturbation seeds which are subsequently amplified by Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth, thereby leading to degradation of ICF implosion performance. To devise methods to mitigate this issue, adequate understanding of the underlying so-called laser-imprinting process is required. Here, we report measurements and modeling of the initial plasma formation process which has been shown to affect the laser imprint. Specifically, we measured the transient transmission of a femtosecond probe pulse through a polystyrene target for different 100-picosecond pump pulse intensities pertaining to ICF conditions. The experimental data are used to benchmark a microphysics model of initial plasma formation that overall describes the observed dynamics, thus providing a validated solid-to-plasma modeling for laser-imprinting purposes in radiation-hydrodynamic codes to accurately simulate and design LDD targets.

Instability seeding mechanisms due to internal defects in inertial confinement fusion targets

Performance degradation in laser-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions is caused by several effects, one of which is Rayleigh–Taylor instability growth. Defects in ICF targets, such as internal voids and surface roughness, create instability seeds in the shell as shocks propagate through the target. A comprehensive understanding of seeding mechanisms is essential to characterize the impact of target defects on inflight shell integrity and mass injection into the central, lower-density vapor region. An analysis of early-time behavior of both single-mode shell mass modulations and isolated voids is performed by examining the evolution of the acoustic waves launched by these target imperfections. A systematic study of localized perturbation growth as a function of defect placement and size is presented. The use of low-density ablator materials (such as foams) is suggested as a potential mitigation strategy to improve target robustness against the impact of defect-initiated growth.

High-resolution elliptical Kirkpatrick-Baez microscope for implosion higher-mode instability diagnosis.

High-resolution X-ray imaging diagnosis is a critical method for measuring Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth and hot spot interface morphology in inertial confinement fusion experiments. In this study, we develop a quasi-monochromatic elliptical Kirkpatrick-Baez microscope based on aberration theory, breaking the aberration limit of conventional Kirkpatrick-Baez microscopes. The microscope was characterized in the laboratory for spatial resolution performance and modulation transfer function before being implemented in cavity experiments at the SG-III prototype laser facility. The results demonstrate that the edge-based method achieves a spatial resolution of <2 µm in the central field of view and modulation of 800 lp/mm spatial frequency of >20%.

Hydrodynamic instabilities in a highly radiative environment

In this paper, we present the effects of a radiative shock (RS) on the morphology of jet-like objects subjected to hydrodynamic instabilities. To this end, we used an experimental platform developed to create RSs on high energy laser facilities such as LULI2000 and GEKKO XII. Here, we employed modulated targets to initiate Richtmyer–Meshkov and Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) growth in the presence of an RS. The RS is obtained by generating a strong shock in a dense pusher that expands into a low-density xenon gas. With our design, only a limited RTI growth occurs in the absence of radiative effects. A strongly radiative shock has opposite effects on RTI growth. While its deceleration enhances the instability growth, the produced radiations tend to stabilize the interfaces. Our indirect experimental observations suggest a lower instability growth despite the interface deceleration. In addition, the jets, produced during the experiment, are relevant to astrophysical structures such as Herbig–Haro objects or other radiatively cooling jets.

Kinetic interpretation of the classical Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities are prevalent in many physical regimes ranging from astrophysical to laboratory plasmas and have primarily been studied using fluid models, the majority of which have been ideal fluid models. This work presents a five-dimensional (two spatial dimensions, three velocity space dimensions) simulation using the continuum-kinetic model to study the effect of the collisional mean free path and transport on the instability growth. The continuum-kinetic model provides noise-free access to the full particle distribution function permitting a detailed investigation of the role of kinetic physics in hydrodynamic phenomena such as the RT instability. For long mean free path, there is no RT instability growth, but as collisionality increases, particles relax towards the Maxwellian velocity distribution, and the kinetic simulations reproduce the fluid simulation results. An important and novel contribution of this work is in the intermediate collisional cases that are not accessible with traditional fluid models and require kinetic modeling. Simulations of intermediate collisional cases show that the RT instability evolution is significantly altered compared to the highly collisional fluidlike cases. Specifically, the growth rate of the intermediate collisionality RT instability is lower than the high collisionality case while also producing a significantly more diffused interface. The higher moments of the distribution function play a more significant role relative to inertial terms for intermediate collisionality during the evolution of the RT instability interface. Particle energy flux is calculated from moments of the distribution and shows that transport is significantly altered in the intermediate collisional case and deviates much more so from the high collisionality limit of the fluid regime.

The effect of viscosity and resistivity on Rayleigh–Taylor instability induced mixing in magnetized high-energy-density plasmas

This work numerically investigates the role of viscosity and resistivity in Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities in magnetized high-energy-density (HED) plasmas for a high Atwood number and high plasma beta regimes surveying across plasma beta and magnetic Prandtl numbers. The numerical simulations are performed using the visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations. Results presented here show that the inclusion of self-consistent viscosity and resistivity in the system drastically changes the growth of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) as well as modifies its internal structure at smaller scales. It is seen here that the viscosity has a stabilizing effect on the RTI. Moreover, the viscosity inhibits the development of small-scale structures and also modifies the morphology of the tip of the RTI spikes. On the other hand, the resistivity reduces the magnetic field stabilization, supporting the development of small-scale structures. The morphology of the RTI spikes is seen to be unaffected by the presence of resistivity in the system. An additional novelty of this work is in the disparate viscosity and resistivity profiles that may exist in HED plasmas and their impact on RTI growth, morphology and the resulting turbulence spectra. Furthermore, this work shows that the dynamics of the magnetic field is independent of viscosity and likewise the resistivity does not affect the dissipation of enstrophy and kinetic energy. In addition, power law scalings of enstrophy, kinetic energy and magnetic field energy are provided in both the injection range and inertial sub-range, which could be useful for understanding RTI induced turbulent mixing in HED laboratory and astrophysical plasmas and could aid in the interpretation of observations of RTI-induced turbulence spectra.

Analytical studies of Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth of double-cone ignition scheme in 2020 winter experimental campaign

In laser direct-driven fusion, high power lasers are used to ablate the target shell, compress and heat the fuel with the spherical focusing rocket effect, to approach to the fusion ignition conditions. The shaped nanosecond laser pulses compress and accelerate the DT target symmetrically, and forms a high density plasma hot-spot at stagnation. The hydrodynamic instabilities, especially the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, which happens at the interface of plasmas, may destroy the compressed shells, and thus reduce the temperature and density of the hot-spot. In this paper is analyzed theoretically the hydrodynamic instability growth under the conditions in the 2020 winter experiment of the double-cone ignition scheme proposed by Zhang et al. (&lt;ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="http://doi.org/10.3788/HPLPB20132504.0903"&gt;2020 &lt;i&gt;Philos. Trans. A Math. Phys. Eng. Sci.&lt;/i&gt; &lt;b&gt;378&lt;/b&gt; 20200015&lt;/ext-link&gt;). Both analytical model and one-dimensional simulations indicate that the fuel shells are compressed with low adiabat under the current quasi-isentropic waveform. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability remains in safe region with a maximum perturbation amplitude reaching 0.25 of the shell thickness at the most peak grown moment. The growth of the hydrodynamic instabilities can be further reduced by increasing the thickness of the shell, through using high foot pre-pulses and improving the uniformity of the target surface and laser irradiation in the future design.
