Spectral broadening and vibronic dynamics of the S2 state of canthaxanthin in the orange carotenoid protein

We have performed a series of broadband multidimensional electronic spectroscopy experiments to probe the electronic and vibrational dynamics of the canthaxanthin chromophore of the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 in its photoactivated red state, OCPR. Cross-peaks observed below the diagonal of the two-dimensional electronic spectrum indicate that absorption transitions prepare the bright S2 state of the ketocarotenoid canthaxanthin near to a sequence of conical intersections, allowing passage to the dark S1 state via the Sx intermediate in <50 fs. Rapid damping of excited-state coherent wavepacket motions suggests that the branching coordinates of the conical intersections include out-of-plane deformation and C=C stretching coordinates of the π-conjugated isoprenoid backbone. The unusual proximity of the Franck–Condon S2 state structure to the conical intersections with Sx and S1 suggests that the protein surroundings of canthaxanthin prepare it to function as an excitation energy trap in the OCPR–phycobilisome complex. Numerical simulations using the multimode Brownian oscillator model demonstrate that the ground-state absorption spectrum of OCPR overlaps with the fluorescence emission spectrum of allophycocyanin due to spectral broadening derived especially from the intramolecular motions of the canthaxanthin chromophore in its binding site.

Improved near-resonant two photon absorption of α-MnO2 nanowires surface functionalized reduced graphene oxide sheets

The versatile study of graphene derivatives has resurgence of interest on understanding its nonlinear optical response at different nanoscales. Nanostructured manganese dioxide: reduced graphene oxide (MnO2: rGO) hybrids were synthesized by reduction method by varying the content of rGO (5, 10, 15 & 20 wt%). X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy studies confirmed the surface functionalization of MnO2 on rGO. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and High-Resolution Tunnelling Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) witness that with respect to the content of rGO, the morphology of MnO2 varies radically from clusters to nanorods to nanowires over the surface of rGO sheets. Ground state absorption spectra of the hybrids have absorption edge at 268 nm corresponding to combined metal oxide charge transfer between rGO (π-π* transition of CC and n-π transition of C-O bonds) and MnO2 (d-d transition). Moreover, hierarchical MnO2 nanowire network resided on 2D rGO sheets involves broad absorption at the visible spectral domain due to polaron transition as well the localization of π- π* transited electrons that facilitates the probability of occurrence of excited state absorption. Intensity dependent open aperture Z-scan technique of the prepared hybrids using Q-switched Nd: YAG 532 nm nanopulsed laser reveals unusual transitions and enhanced nonlinear absorption. MnO2:(5 wt%) rGO shows saturable absorption (SA) at low intensity and changeover dynamically to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) at higher intensity. MnO2:(10 & 15 wt%) rGO exposes coupled nonlinear absorption (SA + RSA) owing to the combined effect of graphene (π-states) and MnO2 (σ-states). MnO2:(20 wt%) rGO exhibits a stronger RSA ascribed to sequential two photon absorption. The third-order nonlinear absorption coefficient and limiting threshold of MnO2: rGO (20 wt%) are 4.04 ×10-10 m/W and 0.84 ×1012 W/m2, which shows five-fold increase compared to bare rGO and MnO2. The obtained results propose that the optical nonlinearity of MnO2 nanowires surface functionalized rGO sheets can significantly be tuned to meet the requirements for fabricating laser safety devices.

Investigation of the exact spin channels in laser-induced spin dynamics in two mononuclear Cu(II) complexes.

In the quest to harness the potential of nanospintronic applications, we analyze and investigate the spin channels for the ultrafast spin dynamics in mononuclear Cu2+(tdp)Cl2 (Cutdp) and Cu2+(tdp)Cl2·MeCN (Cutdp·MeCN) using a high-level ab initio many-body theory. In that spirit, we select two slightly different polymerizations arising from one parent complex. We establish the difference in magnetic behavior between the two complexes which arises solely from the geometrical differences. We calculate the static magnetic properties, such as the magnetic anisotropy of the complexes, which is analyzed by means of the magnetic moment of the ground state. The asymmetry of the core Cu-Cl-Cu-Cl axial plane unit is also reflected in the ground state absorption spectra of the two complexes. Comparisons with the experimental data are in good agreement with the exception of one peak in the theoretical calculations for each of the complexes, confirming the reliability of theoretical methods employed. A major finding in this work is the distinction between classical and coherent superpositions of Λ processes. We employ the selective blocking and retention (SBR) technique to find the unique path or paths for spin dynamic scenarios like spin flip and spin transfer. Additionally, we also present two different scenarios in which intermediate states are involved in spin dynamic processes, (i) classical superposition of Λ processes (i.e., there are many unique paths for transition, even with just one intermediate state the transition completes successfully), and (ii) collective coherent superposition of Λ processes (i.e., there is only one path for the transition, which requires more than one intermediate state to be in a specific coherent superposition). As a consequence, we gain insight into the type of correlations (static or dynamic) involved in a particular spin dynamic scenario.

Absorption Spectra of Protonated Corroles: Two Distinct Patterns Due to Peripheral Substitution Architecture

The origin of individual features in the ground state absorption spectra of two protonated corroles differing in the architecture of peripheral substitution (either Cm-aryl or Cb-alkyl) have been studied in detail with the ground state absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The geometry optimization, molecular orbitals and absorption spectra calculation have been carried out. It was found that protonation leads to the saddle type macrocycle conformation in contrast with the wave type conformation known for the parent-free base corroles. The mean plane deviation parameter Δ23 for the macrocycle, pyrrole tilting angles and the degree of pyramidalization λ2 of all four pyrrole nitrogens was found to depend on the peripheral substitution architecture. Macrocycle conformation of the protonated forms has distinct asymmetrical features which are reflected by the sets of values of the tilting angles and values of pyramidalization degree. The pair of pyrroles B and C has smaller tilting angles and higher pyramidalization degree values, whereas the opposite trend was found for the pair of pyrroles A and D. Electronic effects and structural differences induced by substitution lead to the pronounced shifts of the molecular orbitals. In the Cb-alkylated corrole, almost-degenerated HOMO and HOMO-1 molecular orbitals lead to enhancement of the configuration interaction. As a result, the Qx transition oscillator strength goes down, becoming comparable to that of the Qy one. A large HOMO-HUMO-1gap in the Cm-aryl corrole minimizes the configuration interaction, giving rise to Qx band domination in the visible range spectrum.

Nonlinear optical studies of phenothiazine Schiff bases for optical limiting application

Synthesized Schiff-based organic molecules consisting of phenothiazine backbone (Phe-DNP, Phe-Ma, Phe-3) to investigate its optical limiting applications. The structural confirmation of compounds is carried out by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The quantum mechanical calculations of compounds are measured using Density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic orientation in molecular orbitals and the theoretical bandgap. All the molecules show a broad absorption in the visible domain and the conjugated molecule absorption shifts towards the higher wavelength region. The effective intramolecular charge transfer of molecules in the order Phe-DNP> Phe-Ma>Phe-3 is understood from the ground state absorption spectra results. All the organic moieties exhibited sequential two-photon absorption upon studying the open aperture Z-scan technique. Phe-Ma molecule shows the highest nonlinear absorption (1.212× 10−10 m/W) and lowest optical limiting threshold (3.19 × 1012 W/m2) compared to other molecules suggesting that Phe-Ma could be a potential nonlinear optical limiter.

Ab Initio Investigation of Intramolecular Charge Transfer States in DMABN by Calculation of Excited State X-ray Absorption Spectra

Dual fluorescence in 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) and its derivatives in polar solvents has been studied extensively for the past several decades. An intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) minimum on the excited state potential energy surface, in addition to the localized low-energy (LE) minimum, has been proposed as a mechanism for this dual fluorescence, with large geometric relaxation and molecular orbital reorganization a key feature of the ICT pathway. Herein, we have used both equation-of-motion coupled-cluster with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD) and time-dependent density functional (TDDFT) methods to investigate the landscape of excited state potential energy surfaces across a number of geometric conformations proposed as ICT structures. In order to correlate these geometries and valence excited states in terms of potential experimental observables, we have calculated the nitrogen K-edge ground and excited state absorption spectra for each of the predicted "signpost" structures and identified several key spectral features that could be used to interpret a future time-resolved X-ray absorption experiment.

Electronic and Optical Properties of Alkaline Earth Metal Fluoride Crystals with the Inclusion of Many-Body Effects: A Comparative Study on Rutile MgF2 and Cubic SrF2

We conducted a systematic investigation using state-of-the-art techniques on the electronic and optical properties of two crystals of alkaline earth metal fluorides, namely rutile MgF2 and cubic SrF2. For these two crystals of different symmetry, we present density functional theory (DFT), many-body perturbation theory (MBPT), and Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE) calculations. We calculated a variety of properties, namely ground-state energies, band-energy gaps, and optical absorption spectra with the inclusion of excitonic effects. The quantities were obtained with a high degree of convergence regarding all bulk electronic and optical properties. Bulk rutile MgF2 has distinguished ground-state and excited-state properties with respect to the other cubic fluoride SrF2 and the other members of the alkaline earth metal fluoride family. The nature of the fundamental gaps and estimates of the self-energy and excitonic effects for the two compounds are presented and discussed in detail. Our results are in good accordance with the measurements and other theoretical–computational data. A comparison is made between the excitation and optical properties of bulk rutile MgF2, cubic SrF2, and the corresponding clusters, for which calculations have recently been published, confirming strong excitonic effects in finite-sized systems.

Employing Long-Range Inductive Effects to Modulate Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer Photoluminescence in Homoleptic Cu(I) Complexes

Four Cu(I) bis(phenanthroline) photosensitizers formulated from a new ligand structural motif (Cu1-Cu4) coded according to their 2,9-substituents were synthesized, structurally characterized, and fully evaluated using steady-state and time-resolved absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements as well as electrochemistry. The 2,9-disubstituted-3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands feature the following six-membered ring systems prepared through photochemical synthesis: 4,4-dimethylcyclohexyl (1), tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl (2), tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-yl (3), and 4,4-difluorocyclohexyl (4). Universally, these Cu(I) metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) chromophores display excited-state lifetimes on the microsecond time scale at room temperature, including the three longest-lived homoleptic cuprous phenanthroline excited states measured to date in de-aerated CH2Cl2, τ = 2.5-4.3 μs. This series of molecules also feature high PL quantum efficiencies (ΦPL = 5.3-12% in CH2Cl2). Temperature-dependent PL lifetime experiments confirmed that all these molecules exhibit reverse intersystem crossing and display thermally activated delayed PL from a 1MLCT excited state lying slightly above the 3MLCT state, 1050-1490 cm-1. Ultrafast and conventional transient absorption measurements confirmed that the PL originates from the MLCT excited state, which remains sterically arrested, preventing an excessive flattening distortion even when dissolved in Lewis basic CH3CN. Combined PL and electrochemical data provided evidence that Cu1-Cu4 are highly potent photoreductants (Eox* = -1.73 to -1.62 V vs Fc+/0 in CH3CN), whose potentials are altered solely based on which heteroatoms or substituents are resident on the 2,9-appended ring derivatives. It is proposed that long-range electronic inductive effects are responsible for the systematic modulation observed in the PL spectra, excited-state lifetimes, and the ground state absorption spectra and redox potentials. Cu1-Cu4 quantitatively follow the energy gap law, correlating well with structurally related cuprous phenanthrolines and are also shown to triplet photosensitize the excited states of 9,10-diphenylanthracene with bimolecular rate constants ranging from 1.61 to 2.82 × 108 M-1 s-1. The ability to tailor both photophysical and electrochemical properties using long-range inductive effects imposed by the 2,9-ring platforms advocates new directions for future MLCT chromophore discovery.

Photophysical Modulation of Rhodamine‐B via π‐π stacking with GQD and Its Further Tuning by Cucurbit[7]uril**

AbstractHerein, we report modulation of photophysical properties of a rhodamine B (RhB) upon interaction with a synthesized graphene quantum dot (GQD). The GQD nanomaterial was prepared through a facile top‐down liquid phase peeling technique, starting from synthesized graphene oxide (GO). The detailed characterization using FT‐IR, XPS, AFM and TEM revealed that the GQDs consisted of 2–3 graphene layers with about 5 nm size dots and major functional groups −COOH and −OH on the surface edges. The modulations in the absorption and emission spectra of RhB in ethanol and water with the addition of the prepared GQD were observed using UV‐vis absorption, steady‐state and time‐resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Such photophysical modulations of RhB can be attributed to the synergistic effect of charge transfer and π‐π interactions between the electron rich GQDs and the cationic RhB molecules. Importantly, strong ability of the GQDs to quench the fluorescence of RhB, in addition to its modulated ground state absorption spectra, indicated the dynamic and static quenching mechanism. Further, the addition of the macrocyclic host cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) to the RhB@GQD composite in water caused anticipated recovery of fluorescence of the RhB dye, indicating a weak non‐covalent interaction between the GQDs and RhB. Hence, this study might provide a fresh outlook on the interactions of photoluminescent GQDs and organic dye molecules for making useful functional materials.

Size-Dependent Photobleaching Mechanism and Kinetics Induced by Nanosecond Laser Pulses in Colloidal Semiconductor Quantum Dots.

An experimental-theoretical approach is proposed to investigate the size-dependent photobleaching of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) excited by a nanosecond pulsed laser. In the experimental background, the ground-state absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of chemically prepared QDs are monitored over an excitation time at distinct laser irradiances. The magnitude of photobleaching in the QD solution is quantified by the decay rate of the PL signal as a function of the excitation time and the laser power. A theoretical spectroscopy model is then used to estimate the particle size distribution (PSD) in colloidal solution from the absorption data generated at different laser powers. The resulting evolution of the PSD of the QD ensemble under irradiation is analyzed in terms of classical crystallization theories dealing with the formation, growth, and dissolution of colloidal particles in a supersaturated medium. The QD response to laser irradiation is also interpreted by a simple mechanical model that correlates the photoinduced hydrostatic strain at the solid/liquid interface and the predicted variation of the mean particle size. The reported experimental and theoretical methods are used to completely elucidate the basic physico-chemical processes responsible for the laser-induced photobleaching kinetics of glutathione-capped CdTe aqueous QDs with very small mean sizes. For this purpose, we synthesized a series of colloidal QD samples with mean particle diameters ranging from 1.95 to 2.68 nm. Our results indicate that a faster photobleaching rate occurs in QD samples with smaller sizes in which particle dissolution under laser irradiation is predominant. On the other hand, the photobleaching rate becomes slower in samples with larger dot sizes, possibly due to the formation of core/shell structures in solution via thermal degradation of thiol ligands either during the chemical synthesis or as a consequence of the subsequent interaction with the excitation laser.

Panchromatic Excited-State Absorption in Bis-Cyclometalated Iridium Isocyanide Complexes.

In this work, we introduce a series of cyclometalated iridium complexes and evaluate the suitability of this class of compounds in nonlinear optical (NLO) applications, with an emphasis on long-lived, panchromatic reverse-saturable absorption (RSA). The investigated complexes are represented by the general formula [Ir(C^N)2(CNArdmp)2]+, (C^N = cyclometalating ligand, CNArdmp = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide). Seven such complexes were synthesized and characterized, including in-depth analysis of their photophysical properties (UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence, and transient absorption). This series of compounds contains seven different cyclometalating ligands (2-phenylbenzothiazole (bt) (Ir1), 5-nitro-2-phenylpyridine (ppyNO2) (Ir2), 5-nitro-2-(9-phenanthryl)pyridine (phenNO2) (Ir3), 2-(benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)quinoline (btq) (Ir4), 6-(benzo[b]thiophen-2'-yl)phenanthridine (btph) (Ir5), 2,4-diphenylquinoline (dpq) (Ir6), and 6-nitro-2,4-diphenylquinoline (NO2dpq) (Ir7)), which have profound effects on their ground-state and excited-state absorption spectra. To evaluate the effects of the isocyanide ancillary ligands, some heteroleptic bis-cyclometalated iridium(III) acetylacetonate (acac) analogue complexes are included as points of comparison. In the ground state, the bis-isocyanide complexes display UV-vis absorption with the characteristic 1LC (π → π*) band at λ < 350 nm and 1MLCT bands at 350-500 nm. Five of the complexes (Ir1, Ir2, Ir4, Ir5, and Ir6) display broad, intense triplet excited-state absorption with no ground-state bleach (GSB) over the spectral window of 400-900 nm, with excited-state lifetimes spanning three orders of magnitude from ∼32 ns to 12 μs. The photophysical data suggests that the isocyanide ancillary ligand blue-shifts the GSB transient into the UV, which is normally found in the middle of the visible region for cyclometalated iridium complexes. This study demonstrates the applicability of cationic cyclometalated iridium(III) bis-isocyanide complexes as candidate RSA materials.

Quantum-chemistry study of the ground and excited state absorption of distyrylbenzene: Multi vs single reference methods.

State-of-the-art complete active space self-consistent field/complete active space second order perturbation theory (CASPT2) calculations are used to investigate the role of double excitations on the ground state absorption (GSA) and excited state absorption (ESA) spectra of distyrylbenzene, an important prototype medium-sized π-conjugated organic compound for optoelectronics. The multi-reference results are compared with linear and quadratic response time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) results, revealing an incomplete description of the electronic transitions in the latter. Careful selection of the active space and basis set in the CASPT2 approach allows for a reliable description of the GSA and ESA features; cost-effective DFT-based geometries can be utilized without a significant loss of accuracy. Double excitations are shown to play a pivotal role already for higher excited states in the GSA spectrum, however, without a relevant impact on the discernible spectral features. In the ESA, which shows a much more complex electronic situation, the crucial importance of double (and higher) excitations in all relevant electronic transitions, indeed, mandates a multiconfigurational treatment as done in the present benchmark study.

Enhance Raman scattering for probe methylene blue molecules adsorbed on ZnO microstructures due to charge transfer processes

It is generally understood that the chemical enhancement process is essential in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of semiconductor-based substrates. Understanding the chemical enhancement mechanism is one of the most significant issues in improving the SERS activity of semiconductor substrates and designed hybrid substrates. Nevertheless, understanding the chemical enhancement process, on the other hand, remains controversial and elusive. In this study, ZnO semiconductor microstructures are prepared to investigate SERS activities in probing methylene blue (MB). The SERS mechanism is well elucidated based on the chemical enhancement mechanism related to both the formation of charge-transfer band and charge transfer from the second ionization of the oxygen vacancy defect (V o •• ) to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of MB. Remarkably, the charge-transfer band was evidenced by examining the ground state absorption spectra with a large band centred at 600 nm. These explanations are consistent with the strong SERS substrate behaviour of ZnO microstructures, with the SERS enhancement factor (EF) of ZnO plate substrates being highest among four investigated samples (ZnO tube, hexagonal, plate and flory-rod) at 2.9 × 10 4 at a concentration of MB of 10 −4 M. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation of detecting MB molecules using a pure semiconductor surface with a strong SERS activity. • We have successfully fabricated various morphologies of semiconductor ZnO microstructures by hydrothermal route, including tube, hexagonal, plate and flory-like structures. • These products were studied surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) behaviour for probing methylene blue (MB) molecules with the enhancement factor (EF) achieving 2.9 × 10 4 (10 −4 M). • The charge-transfer band corresponding to the interaction between the ZnO surface and the MB molecule was evidenced by examining the ground state absorption spectra with a large band centred at 600 nm. • The SERS mechanism is well elucidated based on the chemical enhancement mechanism related to both the formation of charge-transfer band and charge transfer. • The combination of the existence of charge-transfer band and charge-transfer resonance leads to the large enhancement factor of using pure ZnO as SERS surface.

Excited-State Charge Transfer and Extended Charge Separation within Covalently Tethered Type-II CdSe/CdTe Quantum Dot Heterostructures: Colloidal and Multilayered Systems.

We used N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) coupling chemistry to synthesize (1) heterostructures of CdSe and CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in colloidal dispersions and (2) heterostructures of CdSe and CdTe QDs, as well as CdS and CdSe QDs, immobilized on metal oxide thin films. The DCC-mediated formation of amide bonds between terminal carboxylic acid and amine groups of ligands on different QDs drove the formation of heterostructures. This cross-linking mechanism selectively yields heterostructures and prohibits the undesired formation of homostructures consisting of just one type of QD. Products of adsorption, ligand-exchange, and covalent-coupling reactions were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and ATR-FTIR, 1H NMR, electronic absorption, steady-state emission, and time-resolved emission spectroscopy. Ground-state absorption spectra of constituent QDs were unperturbed upon incorporation into heterostructures, enabling control over electronic properties. Heterostructures of CdSe and CdTe QDs exhibit type-II interfacial energetic offsets that promote charge separation following excitation of either QD. Indeed, photoexcited CdTe QDs transferred electrons to CdSe, and photoexcited CdSe QDs transferred holes to CdTe, on time scales of 10-100 ns, as evidenced by dynamic quenching of band-edge and trap-state emission. Mixed dispersions of noninteracting QDs did not undergo excited-state charge transfer. Constructing heterostructures on TiO2 thin films introduced an additional charge-transfer pathway, electron transfer from QDs to TiO2, which occurred on subnanosecond time scales and enabled extended spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Our results reveal that carbodiimide coupling chemistry can be used to tether colloidal QDs selectively and covalently to each other, yielding dispersed or immobilized heterostructures with programmable compositions and energetic offsets that can undergo efficient excited-state interfacial electron transfer.

A Modular Approach to Light Capture and Synthetic Tuning of the Excited-State Properties of Fe(II)-Based Chromophores.

The development of chromophores based on earth-abundant transition metals whose photophysical properties are dominated by their charge-transfer excited states has inspired considerable research over the past decade. One challenge associated with this effort is satisfying the dual requirements of a strong ligand field and chemical tunability of the compound's absorptive cross-section. Herein we explore one possible approach using a heteroleptic compositional motif that combines both of these attributes into a single compound. With the parent complex [Fe(phen)3]2+ (1; where phen is 1,10-phenanthroline) as the starting material, replacement of one of the phen ligands for two cyanides to obtain Fe(phen)2(CN)2 (2) allows for conversion to [Fe(phen)2(C4H10N4)]2+ (3), a six-coordinate Fe(II) complex whose coordination sphere consists of two chelating polypyridyl ligands and one bidentate carbene-based donor. Ground-state absorption spectra of all three compounds exhibit 1A1 → 1MLCT transition(s) associated with the phen ligands that are relatively insensitive to the identity of the third counterligand(s). Ultrafast time-resolved electronic absorption measurements revealed lifetimes for the MLCT excited states of compounds 1 and 2 of 180 ± 30 and 250 ± 90 fs, respectively, values that are typical for iron(II)-based polypyridyl complexes. The corresponding kinetics for compound 3 were substantially slower at 7.4 ± 0.9 ps; the spectral evolution associated with these dynamics confirms that these kinetics are tracking the MLCT excited state and, more importantly, are coupled to ground-state recovery from this excited state. The data are interpreted in terms of a modulation of the relative energies of the MLCT and ligand-field states across the series, leading to a systematic destabilization of metal-localized ligand-field excited states such that the low-energy portions of the charge-transfer and ligand-field manifolds are at or near an energetic inversion point in compound 3. We believe these results illustrate the potential for a modular, orthogonal approach to chromophore design in which part of the coordination sphere can be targeted for light absorption while another can be used to tune electronic-state energetics.

Transitions intensities and cross-sections of Tb3+ ions in YAl3(BO3)4 crystal

A Tb3+:YAB crystal was grown using a high-temperature solution growth on dipped seeds technique. Polarized ground state absorption and fluorescence spectra from the 5D4 level, as well as a fluorescence decay curves of 5D4 and 5D3 levels, were recorded at room temperature. Radiative properties such as emission probabilities, branching ratios, and radiative lifetime were investigated within the theory of 4f-4f transition intensity in the case of the intermediate configuration interaction.

Electron thermalization and relaxation in laser-heated nickel by few-femtosecond core-level transient absorption spectroscopy

Direct measurements of photoexcited carrier dynamics in nickel are made using few-femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy at the nickel M$_{2,3}$ edge. It is observed that the core-level absorption lineshape of photoexcited nickel can be described by a Gaussian broadening ($\sigma$) and a red shift ($\omega_{s}$) of the ground state absorption spectrum. Theory predicts, and the experimental results verify that after initial rapid carrier thermalization, the electron temperature increase ($\Delta T$) is linearly proportional to the Gaussian broadening factor $\sigma$, providing quantitative real-time tracking of the relaxation of the electron temperature. Measurements reveal an electron cooling time for 50 nm thick polycrystalline nickel films of 640$\pm$80 fs. With hot thermalized carriers, the spectral red shift exhibits a power-law relationship with the change in electron temperature of $\omega_{s}\propto\Delta T^{1.5}$. Rapid electron thermalization via carrier-carrier scattering accompanies and follows the nominal 4 fs photoexcitation pulse until the carriers reach a quasi-thermal equilibrium. Entwined with a <6 fs instrument response function, carrier thermalization times ranging from 34 fs to 13 fs are estimated from experimental data acquired at different pump fluences and it is observed that the electron thermalization time decreases with increasing pump fluence. The study provides an initial example of measuring electron temperature and thermalization in metals in real time with XUV light, and it lays a foundation for further investigation of photoinduced phase transitions and carrier transport in metals with core-level absorption spectroscopy.

Spectroscopic Properties of Holmium-Aluminum-Germanium Co-doped Silica Fiber

ABSTRACT We report the basic spectroscopic properties of a home-made holmium-aluminum-germanium co-doped silica fiber, designed for laser applications. We present the ground-state and excited-state absorption spectra of the fiber along with the up-conversion emission spectrum under laser action, which served for making an energy levels’ diagram of Ho3+ ion. We discuss the ways to assess the kinetics of Ho3+ 2-µm fluorescence, focusing on measuring fluorescence lifetime from 5I7 level and non-radiative decay time from 5I6 level. The simple analytical formulae, applicable for fitting of the fluorescence decay curve, are derived, which can be useful for precise modeling of holmium-doped fiber lasers.

Influence of Structural Isomerism on the Photophysical Properties of a Series of Donor-Acceptor 1-Naphthalenecarbonitrile Derivatives Possessing Amine Substituents.

In an effort to probe the influence of structural isomerism on the excited-state properties of a naphthalene-based donor-acceptor (D-A) system, four 1-naphthalenecarbonitrile compounds with amine substituents in the 2-, 3-, and 4-positions were synthesized and their photophysical properties were examined. Specifically, the molecules 2-dimethylamino-1-naphthalenecarbonitrile (2DA), 2-(1-piperidinyl)-1-naphthalenecarbonitrile (2P), 3-dimethylamino-1-naphthalenecarbonitrile (3DA), and 4-(1-piperidinyl)-1-naphthalenecarbonitrile (4P) were studied. The substitution position of the amine donor has a significant impact on both the ground-state absorption and excited-state properties of the complexes in toluene solution. The energy, band shape, and extinction coefficient of the ground-state absorption spectra are highly dependent on the substitution position of the amine donor. All of the derivatives exhibit fluorescence at room temperature. The fluorescence observed from 2DA, 2P, and 3DA demonstrates a vibronic structure with all three molecules possessing Stokes shifts on the order of 40 nm, whereas the fluorescence observed from 4P is broad and has a Stokes shift 2 times greater than the other derivatives. The fluorescence lifetimes, fluorescence quantum yields, and intersystem crossing quantum yields vary greatly with the substitution position of the amine donor. 2DA and 2P display intermediate fluorescence lifetimes (2.7 ns) and fluorescence quantum yields (0.20) while possessing the greatest intersystem quantum yield (0.80). 3DA has a much greater fluorescence lifetime (16.9 ns) and fluorescence quantum yield (0.82) at the expense of the intersystem crossing quantum yield (0.12). 4P has the shortest lifetime (0.53 ns), with the lowest fluorescence and intersystem crossing quantum yields (<0.05). The singlet-triplet energy gaps are nearly identical for 2DA, 2P, and 3DA with values on the order of 0.70 eV. This singlet-triplet gap is larger in 4P, with a calculated value of 0.94 eV. The triplet-triplet absorption spectra of 2DA, 2P, and 3DA are similar. Broad peaks in the UV and visible regions with maxima around 330 and 500 nm characterize all three spectra. The triplet excited-state extinction coefficient values for 3DA were found to be 1.5 times larger than those in 2DA and 2P. The triplet-triplet absorption spectrum of 4P is markedly different from the triplet-triplet absorption spectra of the other derivatives. The spectrum is broad, with the four local maxima observed at 374, 445, 624, and 774 nm. All four molecules display delayed fluorescence and laser-power-dependent triplet excited-state decay kinetics, indicating the involvement of triplet-triplet annihilation in the deactivation of the triplet excited states. Both the intrinsic triplet lifetimes and triplet-triplet annihilation rate constants were determined. These values are similar for all of the derivatives with triplet lifetimes on the order of 100 μs and diffusion-controlled rates of triplet-triplet annihilation.
