External Validation of Accelerometry-Based Mechanical Loading Prediction Equations

Accurately predicting physical activity-associated mechanical loading is crucial for developing and monitoring exercise interventions that improve bone health. While accelerometer-based prediction equations offer a promising solution, their external validity across different populations and activity contexts remains unclear. This study aimed to validate existing mechanical loading prediction equations by applying them to a sample and testing conditions distinct from the original validation studies. A convenience sample of 49 adults performed walking, running, and jumping activities on a force plate while wearing accelerometers at their hip, lower back, and ankle. Peak ground reaction force (pGRF) and peak loading rate (pLR) predictions were assessed for accuracy. Substantial variability in prediction accuracy was found, with pLR showing the highest errors. These findings highlight the need to improve prediction models to account for individual biomechanical differences, sensor placement, and high-impact activities. Such refinements are essential for ensuring the models’ reliability in real-world applications, particularly in clinical and biomechanical research contexts, where accurate assessments of mechanical loading are critical for designing rehabilitation programs, injury prevention strategies, and optimizing bone health interventions.

The relationships between patellofemoral bone remodeling, cartilage composition, and vertical loading rate: PET/MRI in isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis

ObjectiveLoading is invariably an important factor of consideration for understanding the causality flow and parallel existence of articular cartilage and subchondral bone changes. The goal of this study was to investigate the patterns of subregional 18NaF-SUV vs. T1p-T2 associations and vertical ground reaction force loading rates; in isolated patellofemoral-joint-osteoarthritis (PFJ-OA) patients. MethodThirty-five isolated PFJ-OA patients, with no tibiofemoral involvement, underwent simultaneous scans in a 3.0T whole-body hybrid PET-MRI scanner. MRI WORMS assessments were performed to identify/confirm isolated PFJ-OA knees from bilateral scans. T1p-T2 relaxation and SUV values were automatically computed for both trochlear and patellar cartilage and subchondral bone subregions (deep, superficial, lateral, and medial). Maximum vertical impact loading rates (Loading-RateNorm) were calculated from walking trials. Relationships were explored between SUV uptake, T1p-T2 values, and Loading-RateNorm via linear mixed-effects modeling. ResultsSignificant and complex association patterns were noted between medial and lateral bone 18NaF-SUV uptakes vs. medial and lateral cartilage sub-regional T1p and T2. SUVMean and SUVMax were positively associated with deep cartilage subregional T1pand T2 values; and negatively associated with superficial cartilage subregional T1p-T2 values in both medial and lateral regions. Both medial and lateral bone 18NaF-SUVMean and SUVMax uptakes remained positively associated with the individual gait characteristics, i.e., peak vertical impact loading rates (Loading-RateNorm). ConclusionEvidence of simultaneous, complementary, cross-sectional associations between T1p-T2 values and peak vertical loading rates with 18NaF-SUV, have been rare in the isolated PFJ-OA cohort. The clinical implications of such novel associations remain of utmost importance from a gait retraining perspective.

Definition of an insole comfort equation using biomechanics data from a real-world data collection method

Comfort is among the priorities of wearers, this creates a requirement to understand and measure footwear comfort within the real-world where footwear is being used. Comfort is subjective however associations have been drawn to biomechanical parameters. Prediction of real-world footwear or insole comfort based upon biomechanical parameters is appealing due to the reduction of potential participant biases. This study aims to develop an equation to predict insole comfort from real-world biomechanics data. Five conditions were evaluated, a control (participant shoe only) and four commercially available insole conditions (Insole A, B, C, D). The RunScribe IMU was worn for one day per condition for the participants normal daily activity, measuring previously validated variables: vertical ground reaction force (GRF), vertical GRF loading rate (GRFr), impact shock (IS), braking shock, total shock, pronation excursion (PE), and maximum pronation velocity (PV). Comfort was measured using a 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS). A mixed model with fixed effects was used to develop the comfort equation, pseudo r 2 statistics were assessed to identify the best equation. All combinations of conditions were tested from single conditions to all 5 together. The following equation was defined using data from insole A and insole B: Comfort = 96.557 + (−0.456*GRFr) + (−11.757*IS) + (−2.869*PE) + (0.142*PV). Marginal pseudo r 2 = 0.175 and conditional pseudo r 2 = 0.675, meaning that 17.5% of the variance in comfort was explained by the biomechanics variables. Previous footwear comfort equations focused on different biomechanics variables including EMG, plantar pressure, loading rates and lower limb kinematics and reported larger explained variance (34.9%–71.4%). Additional variables would be required to improve the current equation; however, it provides insight into how comfort could be improved for usage within product development, as well as measuring comfort during testing.

Cues to land softly and quietly result in acute reductions in ground reaction force loading rates in runners

BackgroundA common gait retraining goal for runners is reducing vertical ground reaction force (GRF) loading rates (LRs), which have been associated with injury. Many gait retraining programs prioritize an internal focus of attention, despite evidence supporting an external focus of attention when a specific outcome is desired (e.g., LR reduction). Research QuestionDoes an external focus of attention (using cues for quiet, soft landings) result in comparable reductions in LRs to those achieved using a common internal focus (forefoot striking while barefoot)? MethodsThis observational study included 37 injured runners (18 male; mean age 36 (14) years) at the OMITTED Running Center. Runners wore inertial measurement units over the distal-medial tibia while running on an instrumented treadmill at a self-selected speed. Data were collected for three conditions: 1) Shod-Control (wearing shoes, without cues); 2) Shod-Quiet (wearing shoes, cues for quiet, soft landings); and 3) Barefoot-FFS (barefoot, cues for forefoot strike (FFS)). Within-subject variables were compared across conditions: vertical instantaneous loading rate (LR, primary outcome); vertical stiffness during initial loading; peak vertical GRF; peak vertical tibial acceleration (TA); and cadence. ResultsVertical LR, stiffness, and TA were lower in the Shod-Quiet compared to Shod-Control p < 0.001). Peak vertical GRF and cadence were not different between Shod-Quiet and Shod-Control. Reductions in stiffness and LR were similar between Shod-Quiet and Barefoot-FFS, and GRF in Barefoot-FFS remained similar to both shod conditions. However, runners demonstrated additional reductions in TA and increased cadence when transitioning from Shod-Quiet to the Barefoot-FFS condition (p < 0.05). SignificanceThese results suggests that a focus on quiet, soft landings may be an effective gait retraining method for future research.

Biomechanical effects of foot orthoses on jump landing performance: A systematic review

Jumping is involved in a wide range of sports and activities, and foot orthoses (FO) are suggested to enhance performance and prevent injury. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate whether using FO with different modifications affects jump landing biomechanics and improves performance in healthy individuals. The search strategy included 7 databases that identified 19 studies. The study quality was evaluated using a modified Downs and Black index. The primary outcome measures were joint kinematics, kinetics, muscle activity, vertical jump height, and horizontal jump distance. Our findings indicated that incorporating arch support with a rearfoot post and softer forefoot region into FO may improve several biomechanical variables during jump landing activities. Improvements in vertical ground reaction force loading rates, knee and ankle kinematics, and muscle cocontraction during jumping with FO could enhance jumping performance. In addition, improvements in hip, knee, ankle, and tibial kinematics and vertical ground reaction force loading rates during landing could reduce impact forces and related injuries. Although a limited number of studies have addressed the effects of FO on vertical jump height and horizontal jump distance, inserting such FO inside shoes with optimum bending stiffness could facilitate jumping performance. A rigorous exploration of the effect and mechanism of FO designs on jumping performance could benefit jumping-related activities and prevent ankle and knee injuries.

Foot Strike Run Retraining forPatients With Patellofemoral Chondral Defects: A Case Series.

Military service members (SMs) demonstrate high rates of patellofemoral chondral defects (PFCDs) that are difficult to diagnosis and, if untreated, result in a cascade of events eventually leading to osteoarthritis. Running is an essential occupational task for SMs; however, there is little evidence regarding techniques to maintain running ability in individuals with cartilage defects. The purpose of this case series was to assess the clinical application of foot strike run retraining in patients with PFCDs. This case series included two active duty U.S. Marine Corps SMs who presented to outpatient physical therapy with PFCD, diagnosed via MRI. Both patients attended eight foot strike run retraining sessions. Running mechanics and patient-reported outcomes were recorded pre-training, post-training, and at a 1-month follow-up visit. Both patients successfully converted their strike pattern from a rearfoot to a non-rearfoot strike pattern with training and retained this strategy at 1-month follow-up. Post-intervention, both patients demonstrated increased running tolerance, and improvements in Numeric Pain Rating Scale and Lower Extremity Functional Scale scores. Biomechanical analysis showed that both patients demonstrated a 63% to 70% reduction in average and peak vertical ground reaction force loading rates post-treatment. Modification of foot strike pattern from rear to non-rearfoot strike during running for individuals with PFCD can reduce the magnitude of impact loading, which potentially limits disease progression. These findings suggest that foot strike run retraining may be a feasible strategy to reduce pain and improve function in SMs with PFCD who are required to run for occupational responsibilities.

Acceleration-Based Estimation of Vertical Ground Reaction Forces during Running: A Comparison of Methods across Running Speeds, Surfaces, and Foot Strike Patterns.

Twenty-seven methods of estimating vertical ground reaction force first peak, loading rate, second peak, average, and/or time series from a single wearable accelerometer worn on the shank or approximate center of mass during running were compared. Force estimation errors were quantified for 74 participants across different running surfaces, speeds, and foot strike angles and biases, repeatability coefficients, and limits of agreement were modeled with linear mixed effects to quantify the accuracy, reliability, and precision. Several methods accurately and reliably estimated the first peak and loading rate, however, none could do so precisely (the limits of agreement exceeded ±65% of target values). Thus, we do not recommend first peak or loading rate estimation from accelerometers with the methods currently available. In contrast, the second peak, average, and time series could all be estimated accurately, reliably, and precisely with several different methods. Of these, we recommend the 'Pogson' methods due to their accuracy, reliability, and precision as well as their stability across surfaces, speeds, and foot strike angles.

Relationships between tibial accelerations and ground reaction forces during walking with load carriage

Peak tibial accelerations (TAs) during running are strongly related to early stance vertical ground reaction forces (GRFs), which are associated with musculoskeletal injury. However, few studies have examined these correlations during walking, and none have evaluated them during walking with loads, a relevant activity for military personnel. Our purpose was to determine the relationships between GRFs and TAs in US Army trainees (n = 649) walking with loads. An inertial measurement unit was attached over their distal antero-medial tibia. Participants walked on an instrumented treadmill at 1.21–1.34 m/s, with a pack loaded with 18.1 kg, for a 3-min warm-up followed by a minimum of 14 strides of data collection. Simple linear regression models were calculated for peak vertical and resultant TAs with vertical and posterior GRF loading rates and peak forces. The strongest relationships were between vertical loading rates and peak vertical TA (R = 0.43–0.50), however the relationships were weaker than has been reported for unloaded walking and running (R > 0.7). All other relationships were trivial to small (R = 0.06–0.27). The weaker relationships for vertical GRFs and TAs may be due to methodological differences between studies, or differences in gait mechanics, such as a longer double-limb support phase in loaded vs. unloaded walking.

The Effect of Sensor Placement on Measured Distal Tibial Accelerations During Running.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) attached to the distal tibia are a validated method of measuring lower-extremity impact accelerations, called tibial accelerations (TAs), in runners. However, no studies have investigated the effects of small errors in IMU placement, which would be expected in real-world, autonomous use of IMUs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a small proximal shift in IMU location on mean TAs and relationships between TAs and ground reaction force loading rates. IMUs were strapped to 18 injury-free runners at a specified standard location (∼1cm proximal to medial malleolus) and 2cm proximal to the standard location. TAs and ground reaction forces were measured while participants ran at self-selected and 10% slower/faster speeds. Mean TA was lower at the standard versus proximal IMU location in the faster running condition (P = .026), but similar in the slower (P = .643) and self-selected conditions (P = .654). Mean TAs measured at the standard IMU explained more variation in ground reaction force loading rates (r2 = .79-.90; P < .001) compared with those measured at the proximal IMU (r2 = .65-.72; P < .001). These results suggest that careful attention should be given to IMU placement when measuring TAs during running.

Adolescents running in conventional running shoes have lower vertical instantaneous loading rates but greater asymmetry than running barefoot or in partial-minimal shoes

ABSTRACT Footwear may moderate the transiently heightened asymmetry in lower limb loading associated with peak growth in adolescence during running. This repeated-measures study compared the magnitude and symmetry of peak vertical ground reaction force and instantaneous loading rates (VILRs) in adolescents during barefoot and shod running. Ten adolescents (age, 10.6 ± 1.7 years) ran at self-selected speed (1.7 ± 0.3 m/s) on an instrumented treadmill under three counter-balanced conditions; barefoot and shod with partial-minimal and conventional running shoes. All participants were within one year of their estimated peak height velocity based on sex-specific regression equations. Foot-strike patterns, peak vertical ground reaction force and VILRs were recorded during 20 seconds of steady-state running. Symmetry of ground reaction forces was assessed using the symmetry index. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were used to compare conditions (α=.05). Adolescents used a rearfoot foot-strike pattern during barefoot and shod running. Use of conventional shoes resulted in a lower VILR (P < .05, dz = 0.9), but higher VILR asymmetry (P < .05) than running barefoot (dz = 1.5) or in partial-minimal shoes (dz = 1.6). Conventional running shoes result in a lower VILR than running unshod or in partial-minimal shoes but may have the unintended consequence of increasing VILR asymmetry. The findings may have implications for performance, musculoskeletal development and injury in adolescents.

Using Raw Accelerometer Data to Predict High-Impact Mechanical Loading.

The purpose of this study was to develop peak ground reaction force (pGRF) and peak loading rate (pLR) prediction equations for high-impact activities in adult subjects with a broad range of body masses, from normal weight to severe obesity. A total of 78 participants (27 males; 82.4 ± 20.6 kg) completed a series of trials involving jumps of different types and heights on force plates while wearing accelerometers at the ankle, lower back, and hip. Regression equations were developed to predict pGRF and pLR from accelerometry data. Leave-one-out cross-validation was used to calculate prediction accuracy and Bland-Altman plots. Body mass was a predictor in all models, along with peak acceleration in the pGRF models and peak acceleration rate in the pLR models. The equations to predict pGRF had a coefficient of determination (R2) of at least 0.83, and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) below 14.5%, while the R2 for the pLR prediction equations was at least 0.87 and the highest MAPE was 24.7%. Jumping pGRF can be accurately predicted through accelerometry data, enabling the continuous assessment of mechanical loading in clinical settings. The pLR prediction equations yielded a lower accuracy when compared to the pGRF equations.

Ground reaction forces during double limb stances while walking in individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation.

The asymmetrical gait of individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation has been well documented. However, there is not a wealth of investigation into asymmetries during the double limb stance depending on whether the intact or prosthetic limb is leading. The first aim of this study was to compare ground reaction forces during the double limb stance of individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation depending on whether their intact (initial double limb stance) or prosthetic (terminal double limb stance) limb was leading. The second aim of this study was to compare the asymmetry ratio of ground reaction forces during the double limb stance between individuals with and without unilateral transfemoral amputation. Thirty individuals, fifteen with unilateral transfemoral amputation and fifteen who were able-bodied, were recruited for this study. Each individual walked on an instrumented treadmill for 30s at eight different speeds, ranging from 2.0km/h to 5.5km/h with .5km/h increments. Ground reaction force parameters, temporal parameters, and asymmetry ratios of all parameters were computed from the data collected. The appropriate statistical analyses of all data based on normality were conducted to investigate the aims of this study. Significant main effects of speed, double limb stance, and their interactions were found for most parameters (p < .01 or p < .05). Individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation spent a longer duration in terminal double limb stance than initial double limb stance at all tested speeds. They also experienced significantly higher peak vertical ground reaction force during initial double limb stance compared to terminal double limb stance with increasing walking speed. However, during terminal double limb stance, higher anteroposterior ground reaction force at initial contact was found when compared to initial double limb stance. Significant differences between individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation and able-bodied individuals were found in asymmetry ratios for peak vertical ground reaction force, anteroposterior ground reaction force, anteroposterior shear, and mediolateral shear at all tested speeds. Asymmetrical loading persists in individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation during double limb stance. Increasing walking speed increased ground reaction force loading asymmetries, which may make individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation more susceptible to knee osteoarthritis or other musculoskeletal disorders. Further study is necessary to develop ideal gait strategies for the minimization of gait asymmetry in individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation.

Can a shoe-mounted IMU identify the effects of orthotics in ways comparable to gait laboratory measurements?

BackgroundFootwear and orthotic research has traditionally been conducted within laboratories. With increasing prevalence of wearable sensors for foot and ankle biomechanics measurement, transitioning experiments into the real-world is realistic. However wearable systems must effectively detect the direction and magnitude of response to interventions to be considered for future usage.MethodsRunScribe IMU was used simultaneously with motion capture, accelerometers, and force plates during straight-line walking. Three orthotics (A, B, C) were used to change lower limb biomechanics from a control (SHOE) including: Ground reaction force (GRF) loading rate (A), pronation excursion (A and B), maximum pronation velocity (A and B), and impact shock (C) to test whether RunScribe detected effects consistent with laboratory measurements. Sensitivity was evaluated by assessing: 1. Significant differences (t-test) and effect sizes (Cohen’s d) between measurement systems for the same orthotic, 2. Statistical significance (t-test and ANOVA) and effect size (Cohen’s d & f) for orthotic effect across measurement systems 3. Direction of orthotic effect across measurement systems.ResultsGRF loading rate (SHOE: p = 0.138 d = 0.403, A: p = 0.541 d = 0.165), impact shock (SHOE: p = 0.177 d = 0.405, C: p = 0.668 d = 0.132), pronation excursion (A: p = 0.623 d = 0.10, B: p = 0.986 d = 0.00) did not significantly differ between measurement systems with low effect size. Significant differences and high effect sizes existed between systems in the control condition for pronation excursion (p = 0.005 d = 0.68), and all conditions for pronation velocity (SHOE: p < 0.001 d = 1.24, A: p = 0.001 p = 1.21, B: p = 0.050 d = 0.64).RunScribe (RS) and Laboratory (LM) recorded the same significant effect of orthotic but inconsistent effect sizes for GRF loading rate (LM: p = 0.020 d = 0.54, RS: p = 0.042 d = 0.27), pronation excursion (LM: p < 0.001 f = 0.31, RS: p = 0.042 f = 0.15), and non-significant effect of orthotic for impact shock (LM: p = 0.182 d = 0.08, RS: p = 0.457 d = 0.24). Statistical significance was different between systems for effect of orthotic on pronation velocity (LM: p = 0.010 f = 0.18, RS: p = 0.093 f = 0.25).RunScribe and Laboratory agreed on the direction of change of the biomechanics variables for 69% (GRF loading rate), 40%—70% (pronation excursion), 47%—65% (pronation velocity), and 58% (impact shock) of participants.ConclusionThe RunScribe shows sensitivity to orthotic effect consistent with the laboratory at the group level for GRF loading rate, pronation excursion, and impact shock during walking. There were however large discrepancies between measurements in individuals. Application of the RunScribe for group analysis may be appropriate, however implementation of RunScribe for individual assessment and those including pronation may lead to erroneous interpretation.

Homo sapiens May Incorporate Daily Acute Cycles of "Conditioning-Deconditioning" to Maintain Musculoskeletal Integrity: Need to Integrate with Biological Clocks and Circadian Rhythm Mediators.

Human evolution required adaptation to the boundary conditions of Earth, including 1 g gravity. The bipedal mobility of Homo sapiens in that gravitational field causes ground reaction force (GRF) loading of their lower extremities, influencing the integrity of the tissues of those extremities. However, humans usually experience such loading during the day and then a period of relative unloading at night. Many studies have indicated that loading of tissues and cells of the musculoskeletal (MSK) system can inhibit their responses to biological mediators such as cytokines and growth factors. Such findings raise the possibility that humans use such cycles of acute conditioning and deconditioning of the cells and tissues of the MSK system to elaborate critical mediators and responsiveness in parallel with these cycles, particularly involving GRF loading. However, humans also experience circadian rhythms with the levels of a number of mediators influenced by day/night cycles, as well as various levels of biological clocks. Thus, if responsiveness to MSK-generated mediators also occurs during the unloaded part of the daily cycle, that response must be integrated with circadian variations as well. Furthermore, it is also possible that responsiveness to circadian rhythm mediators may be regulated by MSK tissue loading. This review will examine evidence for the above scenario and postulate how interactions could be both regulated and studied, and how extension of the acute cycles biased towards deconditioning could lead to loss of tissue integrity.

Acute Effects Of Swimming And Running On Serum Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Concentration

Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis affects an estimated 10 and 13% of American males and females, respectively, over the age of 60; and this prevalence will likely increase in the future due to increased obesity incidence and an aging population. Physical exercise is known to mitigate knee osteoarthritis symptoms, but it is unclear how exercise modes involving different joint load (e.g., running and swimming) affect knee joint health. Serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) concentration is often used to represent articular cartilage metabolism due to physical activity. PURPOSE: Compare the effects of running and swimming on serum COMP concentration in healthy and active older adults. METHODS: Blood samples were collected before and after physical exercise for two groups of older adults. The first group consisted of runners (n = 20; Age = 56 ± 4 yrs; BMI = 24.5 ± 3.2) who completed a 5000-m run. The second group consisted of swimmers (n = 19; Age = 60 ± 6 yrs; BMI = 24.0 ± 2.7) who completed a 1500-m swim. Serum COMP concentrations were quantified via an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare effects of group (runners or swimmers) and time (pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 15-, 30-, and 60-min post-exercise) on serum COMP concentration. RESULTS: A significant group × time interaction existed for serum COMP concentration (p < 0.01). For the runners, serum COMP increased 29% from pre-exercise (171.4 ± 41.1 ng/μL) to immediately post-exercise (220.7 ± 63.2 ng/μL; p < 0.01). For the swimmers, however, serum COMP did not increase from pre-exercise (179.5 ± 60.7 ng/μL) to immediately post-exercise (187.9 ± 59.0 ng/μL; p = 0.99). CONCLUSION: Assuming that serum COMP concentration increase immediately following physical exercise represents knee articular cartilage metabolism due to physical exercise, the present findings demonstrate that running results in more articular cartilage metabolism than swimming. This supports the idea that running, involving ground reaction force and greater joint load (relative to swimming), might contribute to knee joint health in active able-bodied older adults.

The effect of backpack carriage in different weights on ground reaction force components, loading rate and free moment of Schoolchildren's gait

BackgroundThe objective of this study was to investigate the effect of backpack carriage in different weights on ground reaction force components, loading rate and free moment of schoolchildren's gait. MethodsTwenty-one healthy primary school children (8–11 years old) of second, third, fourth and fifth grade participated in this study where quasi-experimental design was administered. The weight of the backpacks used was 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15 percent of the participant's body weight. Gait was evaluated using a Kistler force plate at a frequency of 1000 Hz. The GRF along anterior-posterior(y), and medial-lateral (x) and vertical (z) axes, time to peak (TTP), the rate of loading, free moment were calculated. A repeated-measures ANOVA was used to compare the data between subjects. ResultsThe amplitudes of Fy2 and Fx2 were affected by the carrying load with 15 percent body weight. The amplitudes of Fy1, Fz1 and Fz3 were also affected by the carrying load with 12 and 15 percent body weight. ConclusionsThe carrying load with %12 and 15% of the body weight altered schoolchildren's gait performance. These altered variables should be considered as a risk factor for carrying a backpack.

Comparison of landing kinematics and kinetics between experienced and novice volleyball players during block and spike jumps

BackgroundThe practice of volleyball requires many jumps. During landing, anterior cruciate ligament injuries may occur with high-risk lower limb kinematics and kinetics. Differences in landing strategies between experienced and novice volleyball players have not been fully explored. The purpose of the study was to compare lower limb kinematics and kinetics in experienced and novice volleyball players when performing volleyball specific jumps.MethodsA total of 30 healthy males, 15 experienced and 15 novice volleyball players, participated in the study. Participants performed block and spike jumps at a controlled jump height. Hip, knee and ankle joints angles at initial ground contact and ranges of motion in the sagittal plane, knee joint angles and moments in the frontal plane, vertical ground reaction force peak and loading rate were analyzed to investigate the expertise effect.ResultsExperienced volleyball players landed with larger ankle dorsiflexion range of motion compared to novices. For the spike jump, experienced players landed with larger ankle plantarflexion angles at initial contact and larger ankle dorsiflexion ranges of motion, and for the block jump, they landed with larger knee flexion ranges of motion. Experienced players jumped significantly higher than novices. No difference was found in vertical ground reaction force peaks and loading rates.ConclusionsAlthough the experienced group jumped higher than the novice group, no difference was found in ground reaction force parameters. These findings highlight that the experience of volleyball players acquired during regular trainings and competitions may play an important role in landing kinematics and kinetics to reduce the injury risk.

What differentiates rearfoot strike runners with low and high vertical load rates?

BackgroundRunners with a rearfoot strike pattern typically show high vertical ground reaction force loading rates (LRs), that are associated with injuries, compared with forefoot strikers. However, some runners with a rearfoot strike pattern run in a way that reduces LRs. Our purpose was to identify differences in running mechanics between rearfoot strike runners with high and low vertical LRs. Methods42 healthy runners, 21 with high (≥ 80.5 BW/s) and 21 with low (≤ 46.3 BW/s) LRs, were included in the current study. Lower extremity kinematic and kinetic data were then collected while participants ran along a 30 m runway. Running mechanics were calculated, including sagittal plane knee stiffness during early stance, the components of knee stiffness (Δ knee flexion and flexion moment), sagittal joint angles at initial contact, as well as cadence. The two LR groups were compared for differences in outcome variables using independent t-tests or Mann Whitney U tests. FindingsKnee stiffness was significantly lower in the low LR group (p < 0.01, d = 0.87), due to higher knee flexion excursion (p < 0.01, d = 1.38). At initial contact, the low LR group showed lower hip and knee flexion, but greater ankle and foot dorsiflexion (p = 0.01–0.04, d = 0.64–0.93). No differences were found in cadence. InterpretationThese results provide potential targets, related to gait kinematics and kinetics, for gait retraining aimed at reducing LRs in rearfoot strike runners.

The Influence of Different Rope Jumping Methods on Adolescents' Lower Limb Biomechanics during the Ground-Contact Phase.

As a simple and beneficial way of exercise, rope skipping is favored by the majority of teenagers, but incorrect rope skipping may lead to the risk of injury. In this study, 16 male adolescent subjects were tested for bounced jump skipping and alternating jump rope skipping. The kinematic data of the hip, knee, ankle and metatarsophalangeal joint of lower extremities and the kinetics data of lower extremity touching the ground during rope skipping were collected, respectively. Moreover, the electromyography (EMG) data of multiple muscles of the lower extremity were collected by Delsys wireless surface EMG tester. Results revealed that bounced jump (BJ) depicted a significantly smaller vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) than alternate jump (AJ) during the 11–82% of the ground-contact stage (p < 0.001), and the peak ground reaction force and average loading rate were significantly smaller than AJ. From the kinematic perspective, in the sagittal plane, when using BJ, the flexion angle of the hip joint was comparably larger at 12–76% of the ground-contact stage (p < 0.01) and the flexion angle of the knee joint was significantly larger at 13–72% of the ground-contact stage (p < 0.001). When using two rope skipping methods, the minimum dorsal extension angle of the metatarsophalangeal joint was more than 25°, and the maximum was even higher than 50°. In the frontal plane, when using AJ, the valgus angle of the knee joint was significantly larger during the whole ground-contact stage (p < 0.001), and the adduction angle of the metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) was significantly larger at 0–97% of the ground-contact stage (p = 0.001). EMG data showed that the standardized value of root mean square amplitude of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius lateral head of BJ was significantly higher than AJ. At the same time, that of semitendinosus and iliopsoas muscle was significantly lower. According to the above results, compared with AJ, teenagers receive less GRF and have a better landing buffer strategy to reduce load, and have less risk of injury during BJ. In addition, in BJ rope skipping, the lower limbs are more inclined to the calf muscle group force, while AJ is more inclined to the thigh muscle group force. We also found that in using two ways of rope skipping, the extreme metatarsophalangeal joint back extension angle could be a potential risk of injury for rope skipping.
