Attitude and behavior of obstetric nursing staff in providing grief nursing for maternal women with fetal loss

Objective To understand the attitude and behavioral status quo of obstetric nursing staff in caring for maternal women with fetal loss, so as to provide effective reference for the establishment of obstetric grief nursing model. Methods By convenience sampling, nurses and midwives working in the obstetrics department in a ClassⅢ Grade A obstetrics and gynecology hospital of Beijing from March 1st to 31st of 2017 were selected. Self-designed Questionnaire on Attitude and Behavior of Obstetric Nurses on Grief Nursing was used to investigate the attitude and behaviour status of the obstetric nurses and midwives on grief nursing. The questionnaires were distributed collected by 2 charge nurses in obstetric department. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 software. Results A total of 165 questionnaires were distributed and 165 ones were retrieved. The score of grief nursing attitudes of obstetric ward nurses was (37.03±7.01) , and the score of grief nursing behaviors was (27.08±5.61) ; the score of grief nursing attitudes of obstetric ward midwives was (39.15±7.22) , and the score of grief nursing behaviors was (16.76±4.51) .There were significant differences in the scores of grief nursing attitudes among nurses of different ages, working years and professional titles (P<0.05) ; there were statistical difference in scores of grief nursing behaviors from nurses with different working years and professional titles (P<0.05) . The highest score of grief nursing attitudes was (4.25±0.85) , and the lowest was (2.81±1.05) ; the highest score of grief behaviors was (4.33±0.98) , and the lowest was (1.79±1.04) . Conclusions Obstetric nurses' perception of grief nursing is relatively limited and lack of standardized obstetric grief nursing mode. It is necessary to further improve the education and training of sensitive culture of medical staff in grief nursing consultation. A standardized grief nursing model should be established according to the psychological status and actual psychological needs of the mothers with lost fetuses in China. Death on the digital landscape: a preliminary investigation into the grief process and motivations behind participation in the online memoriam.

Increasingly, individuals are bonding and maintaining relationships online. These digital representations of ourselves allow us to connect with others in ways previously not possible. One behavior that is growing in online presentations of self is grieving after the death of an individual in our social network. This work investigates the outcomes of online grieving from a transcorporeal communication model perspective, and draws conclusions on the outcomes of online grief behaviors.

Grief Among Demented Elderly Individuals

Grief behaviors of 17 elderly persons with dementia living at nursing homes were observed. When compared with bereaved with normal cognitive ability, both similarities and differences were found. Similarities seemed to exist for irritability, lost appetite, increased sedative medication, bodily complaints, less physical activity, and less interest in happy events. Differences were found, for example, social activity, as they did not isolate themselves. The workload of staff increased when a caretaker was bereaved. Repeated information to the patients with dementia about the loss, their seeking for the dead and crying outbursts remembering the loss, and the need of comfort was common, although several had their loss more than months ago. Proper interventions including facilitating programs for both staff and caretakers are recommended, as also a larger study group.

The Attitudes of Men and Women concerning Gender Differences in Grief

Attitudes concerning gender and grief were investigated using a convenience sample of 106 men and women ages 23 to 82 years. Participants rated conjugal grief behaviors of target figures for sympathy and appropriateness on the Attitudes Toward Gender and Grief Scale, rated their own sex-role type on the Bem Sex Role Inventory, and provided demographic information and a brief grief history. Results from factor analysis of the Attitudes Toward Gender and Grief Scale showed evidence for the construct validity of the scale by yielding three factors: sympathy, appropriateness of instrumental grief, and appropriateness of intuitive grief. The hypothesis that factor analysis of the Attitudes Toward Gender and Grief Scale would show that vignettes describing gender-stereotypical grief behavior would load positively on factors for sympathy and appropriateness was not confirmed. However, the hypothesis that female participants would give more sympathy to grieving people than males was confirmed. Contrary to expectation, participants did not give female target figures more sympathy than male figures; women did not give the most sympathy to female target figures; and men did not give male target figures the least sympathy. As hypothesized, feminine sex-typed and androgynous participants gave more sympathy to grieving people than masculine sex-typed participants. Findings were discussed in terms of evolutionary, developmental, and sex-role socialization theories.

Child bereavement after paternal suicide.

Studies of child suicide survivors are rare and often these studies have not included direct interviews with children. To describe the bereavement process in a sample of prepubertal children whose fathers died by suicide within the previous three years. Sixteen prepubertal children, their mothers, and a relative or caretaker were interviewed to examine grief, trauma, and behavior within 25 months of paternal suicide. Reminiscing was the most frequently endorsed grief behavior. Males were more likely than females to score above the standard means for CBCL scores. PTSD scores were significantly related to parental threats of divorce and exposure to death by discovery of the body. The concept of grief and trauma as separate and overlapping phenomena is supported by the study findings.

Patterns of grief in young children following the death of a sibling

Abstract Specific grief behaviors observed in children ages 4-16 years in the 2 years after the death of a sibling are reported. Using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the parents of 90 boys and girls rated the occurrence of behavior problems in their children. Behavior problems identified in 50% or more of the children are reported both for the total sample and by age and sex groups. The behaviors commonly observed in the bereaved children predominanty fell into the Agression subscale of the standardized CBCL. It is suggested that bereaved children use aggressive behaviors instrumentally to gain parental attention, rather than as an instinctual expression of hostility and anger.

Behavior of toddlers during daily leave-taking and separation from their parents

At a day-care center (DCC) the behavior of 1 to 3-year-old children was studied in an away-from-home environment. The children's behavior was observed a) before, during and after daily leave-taking of their parents, and b) during everyday DCC routine as well as in a comparative situation when a parent was present. Children who showed a long leave-taking phase played less during the first half-hour after leave-taking. Children to whom it was possible to make a comparison showed more “aside-behavior” and grief behavior as well as less initiatives to contact adults when their parents were absent than they did in their presence. Some children produced various substitute stimuli for parental presence while their parent was absent. These conspicuous behaviors which were observed are discussed in this paper as being reactions to the situation of being left by the parents. The extent of playing behavior seems to be a measurable indicator which may be used to determine the subsidence of excitement after the parent's leave-taking.

Grief and collection development

Donors of gifts-in-kind and sellers of private collections often require intensive cultivation by the librarian seeking to acquire their materials. Anger, bargaining, and depression are examples of grief behavior displayed by such persons when they are facing the loss of their collections. Understanding common grief behaviors within the library context can assist the librarian in dealing with these donors and sellers more humanely and successfully.

Dysfunctional grieving related to childbearing loss: a descriptive study.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze client cases with the nursing diagnosis of dysfunctional grieving. Such research is in congruence with the American Nurses’ Association's definition of nursing as cited in Nursing: A Social Policy Statement and the call for diagnostic and case study research from the National Group for Classification of Nursing Diagnoses. A Grounded Theory, case study methodology was used to discover, categorize, and evaluate defining characteristics and strategies of assessment and counseling for the diagnosis. These cases include spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, infant death, and birth of severely handicapped and premature infants. Findings led to the development of a nursing counseling model, which highlights a creative nursing process of assessment and intervention that has not been identified in the literature. An exploration of homesickness among student nurses.

Clinical experience of the author and literature reports suggest that homesickness can be an important factor in adjustment difficulties among student nurses. Following previous studies of residential relocation, homesickenss is conceptualised as a grief reaction. It is suggested that attempts to maintain attachment to home and family will also be involved. A scale of 'homesickness symptoms' based on this conceptualisation was developed and administered to 185 student nurses, 85 after 4 months of training and 100 after 10 months. Results supported the view that homesickness is a state involving both grief behaviour and attachment behaviour. Recency of separation increased the likelihood of reporting many symptoms. The numbers reporting large numbers of symptoms declined after the first 6 weeks but remained steady at 40-50% thereafter. Students with easier access to their homes were not less likely to report many symptoms initially, but were more likely to report fewer symptoms after the first 6 weeks. Some findings of a more intensive interview study of students, some of whom appeared never to have been homesick, some to have recovered, and some to have continued being homesick, are described. Finally, the therapeutic implications of the results are discussed and the potential of further research for elucidation of attachment behaviour in young adults of maturation to self-reliance is suggested.
