LENS-GRM Applicability Analysis and Evaluation

Recently, there have been many abnormal natural phenomena caused by climate change. Anthropogenic factors associated with insufficient water resource management can be another cause. Among natural causes, rainfall intensity and volume often induce flooding. Therefore, accurate rainfall estimation and prediction can prevent and mitigate damage caused by these hazards. Sadly, uncertainties often hinder accurate rainfall forecasting. This study investigates the uncertainty of the Korean rainfall ensemble prediction data and runoff analysis model in order to enhance reliability and improve prediction. The objectives of this study include: (i) evaluating the spatial characteristics and applicability of limited area ensemble prediction system (LENS) data; (ii) understanding uncertainty using parameter correction and generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) and grid-based rainfall-runoff model (GRM); (iii) evaluating models before and after LENS-GRM correction. In this study, data from the Wicheon Basin was used. The informal likelihood (R2, NSE, PBIAS) and formal likelihood (log-normal) were used to evaluate model applicability. The results confirmed that uncertainty of the behavioral model exists using the likelihood threshold when applying the runoff model to rainfall forecasting data. Accordingly, this method is expected to enable more reliable flood prediction by reducing the uncertainties of the rainfall ensemble data and the runoff model when selecting the behavioral model for the user’s uncertainty analysis. It also provides a basis for flood prediction studies that apply rainfall and geographical characteristics for rainfall-runoff uncertainty analysis.

Assessment of Uncertainty in Grid-Based Rainfall-Runoff Model Based on Formal and Informal Likelihood Measures

Damage prevention from the local storms and typhoons in Korea, the development of a rainfall-runoff model reflecting local geological, meteorological and physical characteristics is necessary. The accuracy of the rainfall-runoff model is influenced by the various uncertainty factors that can occur in the modeling processes, including input data, model parameters, modeling simplification, and so on. Thus, the objectives of this study are (1) to estimate runoff for two rainfall events using Grid Rainfall-Runoff Model (GRM); (2) to quantify the uncertainty of the GRM model using the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method, and (3) to assess the uncertainty ranges of the GRM based on different likelihood functions. For this, two rainfall events were implemented to the GRM in the Cheongmicheon watershed, and informal likelihood functions (LNSE, LPBIAS, LRSR, and LLOG) based on the fitness indices (NSE, PBIAS, RSR, and Log-normal) were used for uncertainty analysis and quantification using GLUE method. As a result, the GRM parameters varied according to the different rainfall patterns even in the same watershed. In addition, among the GRM parameters, the CRC (Channel Roughness Coefficient) and CSHC (Correction factor for Soil Hydraulic Conductivity) characteristics are the most sensitive. Moreover, this study showed that the uncertainty range of the GRM model can be changed with the subjective selection of likelihood functions and thresholds. The GRM model is open source and has good accessibility. Especially, this open-source model allows various approaches to disaster prevention plans such as flood forecasting and flood insurance policies. In addition, if the parameter range of GRM is quantified and standardized at domestic watersheds, it is expected that the reliability of the rainfall-runoff simulation can be increased by the reduction of the uncertainty factors.

Construction of rating curve at high water level considering rainfall effect in a tidal river

In particular, tidal river, which is located in the estuary area, is impacted by many hydrological factors such as tide, wave height, and rainfall. This paper develops a new rating curve that can predict the water level of the tidal river. It also assesses the accuracy of the developed rating curve through the verification event. New hydrological insightsTidal rivers show non-linear hydrological characteristics that are influenced by various hydrological factors. Thus, no rating curve has been developed for them. This study proposes a method to develop a rating curve that can estimate the water level by using the runoff from rainfall in a tidal river. To develop the rating curve, the water level at Ulsan station, Korea was decomposed into four components, which are tide, wave, noise and runoff component by using wavelet analysis, curve fitting, and a high pass filter. A distributed grid-based rainfall-runoff model (GRM) was applied to simulate the runoff. The simulated runoff and the water level components influenced by rainfall were used to develop a rating curve and estimate the water level from the simulated runoff. The results were then added to the other three components (tide, wave, noise) to calculate an integrated water level, which was compared with the observed water level at Ulsan station. With less than 10 % error during validation, the results are expected to contribute to the accurate prediction of water level of tidal river during flood season.

Sensitivity Analysis to Investigate the Reliability of the Grid-Based Rainfall-Runoff Model

This study aimed to assess the suitability of the parameters of a physically based, distributed, grid-based rainfall-runoff model. We analyzed parameter sensitivity with a dataset of eight rainfall events that occurred in two catchments of South Korea, using the Sobol’ method. Parameters identified as sensitive responded adequately to the scale of the rainfall events and the objective functions employed. Parameter sensitivity varied depending on rainfall scale, even in the same catchment. Interestingly, for a rainfall event causing considerable runoff, parameters related to initial soil saturation and soil water movement played a significant role in low flow calculation and high flow calculation, respectively. The larger and steeper catchment exhibited a greater difference in parameter sensitivity between rainfall events. Finally, we found that setting an incorrect parameter range that is physically impossible can have a large impact on runoff simulation, leading to substantial uncertainty in the simulation results. The proposed analysis method and the results from our study can help researchers using a distributed rainfall-runoff model produce more reliable analysis results.

Combining an R-Based Evolutionary Algorithm and Hydrological Model for Effective Parameter Calibration

The hydrological model assessment and development (hydromad) modeling package is an R-based package that can be applied to simulate hydrological models and optimize parameters. As the hydromad package is incompatible with hydrological models outside the package, the parameters of such models cannot be directly optimized. Hence, we proposed a method of optimizing the hydrological-model parameters by combining the executable (EXE) file of the hydrological model with the shuffled complex evolution (SCE) algorithm provided by the hydromad package. A physically based, spatially distributed, grid-based rainfall–runoff model (GRM) was employed. By calibrating the parameters of the GRM, the performance of the model was found to be reasonable. Thus, the hydromad can be used to optimize the hydrological-model parameters outside the package if the EXE file of the hydrological model is available. The time required to optimize the parameters depends on the type of event, even for the same catchment area.

레이더 강우 및 분포형 수문모형의 공간해상도가 매개변수 추정에 미치는 영향 평가

본 연구는 레이더 강우와 분포형 수문모형의 공간해상도가 매개변수 추정 및 강우-유출 모의에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 레이더 강우는 비슬산 S밴드 이중편파 강우레이더에서 2012년 관측된 강우사상을 대상으로, R-KDP, R-Z, R-ZDR의 관계식에 의해 추정된 레이더 강우를 지상관측 강우와 비교하였다. 세 가지 강우 추정식에 의한 레이더 강우를 지상 관측 강우와 비교 시 유역 평균에 대해서는 모두 높은 일치도를 보였으며, 이는 지상 관측 강우에 대한 레이더 강우 보정의 영향으로 판단되었다. 그 중에서도 R-KDP에 의한 추정 강우가 비교적 높은 정확도를 보였으며, 이를 강우-유출 모형의 입력자료로 적용하였다. 강우-유출 모형으로는 GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model) 모형을 이용하여, 낙동강 수계 금호강 유역을 대상으로, 200m, 500m, 1000m의 공간해상도로 입력자료를 구축하였다. 또한, 범용 매개변수 최적화 모형인 PEST(model independent parameter estimation tool)로 초기 포화도, 지표면 조도계수 및 토양 투수계수의 보정계수를 각 공간해상도 및 호우사상 별로 추정하였다. 매개변수 추정 결과, 200m 공간해상도 모형에서는 비교대상 강우사상에 대해 지표면 조도계수와 토양 투수계수 관련 보정계수가 비교적 안정적으로 추정되었으나, 500m, 1000m 공간해상도 모형에서는 강우사상에 따라 매개변수의 최적 추정 값의 변동이 확인되었다. 초기 포화도는 강우사상 별, 공간해상도 별로 일정한 경향을 보이지 않았다. 또한, 200m와 1000m 공간해상도에 대해 최적화된 매개변수를 다른 공간해상도에 적용한 결과, 1000m 공간해상도에 대해 보정된 매개변수를 200m 공간해상도 모형에 적용하면 첨두 홍수량이 증가하는 경향이 있었다. In this study, we assess impact of spatial resolution of radar rainfall and a distributed hydrologic model on parameter estimation and rainfall-runoff response. Radar data measured by S-band polarimetric radar located at Mt. Bisl in the year of 2012 are used for the comparative study. As different rainfall estimates such as R-KDP, R-Z, and R-ZDR show good agreement with ground rainfall, R-KDP are applied for rainfall-runoff modeling due to relatively high accuracy in terms of catchment averaged and gauging point rainfall. GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model) is implemented for flood simulations at the Geumho River catchment with spatial resolutions of 200m, 500m, and 1000m. Automatic calibration is performed by PEST (model independent parameter estimation tool) to find suitable parameters for each spatial resolution. For 200m resolution, multipliers of overlandflow and soil hydraulic conductivity are estimated within stable ranges, while high variations are found from results for 500m and 1000m resolution. No tendency is found in the estimated initial soil moisture. When parameters estimated for different spatial resolution are applied for other resolutions, 200m resolution model shows higher sensitivity compared to 1000m resolution model.

Multi‐site calibration using a grid‐based event rainfall–runoff model: a case study of the upstream areas of the Nakdong River basin in Korea

AbstractMost runoff analyses using a grid‐based distributed model use one parameter group calibrated at the outlet of a watershed, instead of dividing the watershed into subwatersheds. Significant differences between the observed value and the simulation result of the subwatersheds can occur if just one parameter group is used in all subwatersheds that have different hydrological characteristics from each other. Therefore, to improve the simulation results of the subwatersheds within a watershed, a model calibrated at every subwatershed needs to be used to reflect the characteristics of each subwatershed. In this study, different parameter groups were set up for one or two sites using a distributed model, the GRM (Grid based Rainfall‐runoff Model), and the evaluations were based on the results of rainfall–runoff analysis, which uses a multi‐site calibration (MSC) technique to calibrate the model at the outlet of each site. The Hyangseok watershed in Naeseong River, which is a tributary of Nakdong River in Korea, was chosen as the study area. The watershed was divided into five subwatersheds each with a subwatershed outlet that was applied to the calibration sites. The MSC was applied for five cases. When a site was added for calibration in a watershed, the runoff simulation showed better results than the calibration of only one site at the most downstream area of the watershed. The MSC approach could improve the simulation results on the calibrated sites and even on the non‐calibrated sites, and the effect of MSC was improved when the calibrated site was closer to the runoff site. Physically-Based One-Dimensional Distributed Rainfall-Runoff Model Using the Finite Volume Method and Grid Network Flow Analysis

This work develops a grid based rainfall-runoff model (GRM), which is a physically based and spatially distributed model. Surface flow was analyzed using a kinematic wave model with the governing equations discretized using the finite volume method (FVM). This paper suggests a grid network flow analysis technique using variable rainfall intensity according to the flow directions to analyze one-dimensional flows between the grids. The model was evaluated by applying it to the Wuicheon watershed, a tributary of the Nakdonggang (Riv.), in Korea. The results showed that the grid-based, one-dimensional kinematic wave model adopted the FVM and the grid network flow analysis technique well. The simulation results showed good agreement with the observed hydrographs and the initial soil saturation ratio was most sensitive to the modeling results.

병렬 PEST를 이용한 분포형 수문모형의 매개변수 추정: 레이더 및 지상 강우 자료 영향 비교

본 연구에서는 범용 매개변수 최적화 모형인 PEST를 이용하여 분포형 수문모형인 GRM(grid based rainfall-runoff model) 모형의 매개변수 및 불확실성 범위를 추정하였다. 특히, 레이더 강우 및 지상 관측 강우를 각각 적용하여, 입력자료 차이가 매개변수 추정에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 자동 보정 모형은 GUI (graphic user interface)에 대한 접근 없이 모형구동이 가능하도록 개선된 GRM-MP (multiple projects) 버전과 병렬 PEST 버전을 결합하여 매개변수 추정에 소요되는 시간을 단축시켰다. 이를 낙동강 수계 금호강 유역과 감천 유역에 대해 적용하여, 초기 포화도, 지표면 조도계수 및 토양 투수계수의 보정계수에 대해 매개변수 최적화 및 불확실성 추정을 수행하였다. 강우자료 분석 결과, 레이더와 지상 강우의 유역평균 누적시계열은 비슷하거나 지상 강우가 조금 큰 경향을 보였으나, 공간분포에 있어서는 지상 강우에 비해 레이더 강우에서 큰 변동성이 확인되었다. 보정된 수문모의 결과는 레이더 강우 적용 시, 지상 강우에 비해 비슷하거나 더 나은 정확도를 보였다. 추정된 매개변수는 레이더 강우 적용 시, 토양 투수계수의 보정계수가 일관되게 1보다 작은 경향을 보였으며, 이는 강우강도가 강한 격자가 상당수 존재하기 때문으로 판단되었다. 초기 포화도 및 지표면 조도계수의 보정계수는 레이더 및 지상 강우에서 일정한 경향성을 보이지 않았다. 본 연구의 대상 유역 및 호우사상에 대한 PEST의 최적화 모의 결과, 동일 유역 및 호우사상에 대해서도 강우 추정 방법에 따라 서로 다른 최적 매개변수 값을 갖는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이는 향후 레이더 강우 자료의 수문 모의 활용 시 유의해야할 점으로 판단된다. In this study, we estimate parameters of a distributed hydrologic model, GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model), using a model-independent parameter estimation tool, PEST. We implement auto calibration of model parameters such as initial soil moisture, multipliers of overland roughness and soil hydraulic conductivity in the Geumho River Catchment and the Gamcheon Catchment using radar rainfall estimates and ground-observed rainfall represented by Thiessen interpolation. Automatic calibration is performed by GRM-MP (multiple projects), a modified version of GRM without GUI (graphic user interface) implementation, and "Parallel PEST" to improve estimation efficiency. Although ground rainfall shows similar or higher cumulative amount compared to radar rainfall in the areal average, high spatial variation is found only in radar rainfall. In terms of accuracy of hydrologic simulations, radar rainfall is equivalent or superior to ground rainfall. In the case of radar rainfall, the estimated multiplier of soil hydraulic conductivity is lower than 1, which may be affected by high rainfall intensity of radar rainfall. Other parameters such as initial soil moisture and the multiplier of overland roughness do not show consistent trends in the calibration results. Overall, calibrated parameters show different patterns in radar and ground rainfall, which should be carefully considered in the rainfall-runoff modelling applications using radar rainfall.

A grid-based rainfall-runoff model for flood simulation including paddy fields

A grid-based, KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model (KIMSTORM) is described. The model adopts the single flow-path algorithm and routes the water balance during the storm period. Manning’s roughness coefficient adjustment function of the paddy cell was applied to simulate the flood mitigation effect of the paddy fields for the grid-based, distributed rainfall-runoff modeling. The model was tested in 2296 km2 dam watershed in South Korea using six typhoon storm events occurring between 2000 and 2007 with 500 m spatial resolution, and the results were tested through the automatic model evaluation functions in the model. The average values of the Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency (ME), the volume conservation index (VCI), the relative error of peak runoff rate (EQp), and the absolute error of peak runoff (ETp) were 0.974, 1.016, 0.019, and 0.45 h for calibrated storm events and 0.975, 0.951, 0.029, and 0.50 h for verified storm events, respectively. In the simulation of the flood mitigation effect of the paddy fields, the average values of the percentage changes for peak runoff, total runoff volume, and time to peak runoff were only −1.95, −0.93, and 0.19%, respectively.

댐 하류 지점에 대한 분포형 모형의 적용성 평가

유역에서의 댐은 이수와 치수 측면에서 매우 큰 역할을 담당하고 있으며, 특히 집중호우 기간 동안의 댐 방류는 강우에 의해서 발생되는 유출과 더불어 댐 하류의 홍수조절에 직접적인 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 연구에서는 댐 방류와 강우에 의한 유출의 영향을 동시에 받는 댐 하류 지점에 대한 유출모의를 위해서 HyGIS (Hydro Geographic Information System) 환경에서 운영되는 분포형 강우-유출 모형인 GRM (Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model)을 적용하고 이에 대한 적용성을 평가하고자 한다. 대상 유역은 한강 수계의 여주 수위관측소 상류로 선정하였으며, 충주 조정지댐과 횡성댐의 방류량 및 강우의 영향을 반영하여 유출모의를 수행하고, 이를 여주 수위관측소에 대해서 검증 하였다. 모형의 적용결과 모의된 유출 수문곡선은 관측 수문곡선을 잘 재현하였으며, 이를 통해서 GRM 모형은 댐방류와 강우가 유역유출에 미치는 영향을 적절히 모의할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. Dam has very important roles in both water use and flood control. Dam release and runoff from rainfall affect directly to the flood control at the downstream of dam during heavy storm especially. This study evaluates the applicability of a distributed model by applying the GRM (Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model) based on HyGIS (Hydro Geographic Information System) environment to runoff modeling at the downstream of dam where the discharge from dam and rainfall affect simultaneously. In order to do this, Yeoju watershed in Han River basin is selected. Rainfall data and discharge from Chungju regulation dam and Hoengseong dam are applied to runoff simulation. The modeling results are verified with Yeoju water level station, and they show good agreement with observed hydrographs. And this study shows that GRM is able to simulate appropriately the effect of dam discharge and rainfall on watershed runoff.

분포형 강우-유출 모의를 위한 격자 네트워크 해석

유역의 강우-유출 현상을 분포형으로 모의하기 위해서는 삼각형 혹은 사각형 요소로 유역을 모형화하고 각 요소에서의 수문성분의 변화를 해석하여야 한다. 본 연구는 사각형 요소인 격자로 모형화된 유역에서의 강우-유출 현상을 1차원 운동파 방정식을 이용하여 모의할 때 각 격자에서 발생된 흐름의 추적을 위한 격자 네트워크 해석에 대해 수행하였다. 격자의 흐름방향은 D8-method(deterministic eight-neighbors method)에 의해 결정된 단방향 흐름정보를 이용하였고, 각 격자별 흐름방향과 흐름누적수 정보를 이용하여 해당 격자의 계산 순서를 결정하게 된다. 또한 1차원 운동파 방정식을 유한체적법으로 해석할 때 격자간의 흐름방향 형태에 따른 해석방법을 제시하고, 이를 격자별 유출량 계산에 적용하였다. 본 연구에서 제시된 격자 네트워크 해석법은 물리적 기반의 분포형 강우-유출 모형인 GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model)에 적용하였으며, 단순화된 가상의 유역에 대한 모의결과를 <TEX>$Vflo^{TM}$</TEX> 모형의 모의결과와 비교함으로써 타당성을 검토하였다. 또한 한강 수계의 중랑천 유역의 적용을 통해 실유역에 대한 적용성을 검토하였다. 중랑천 유역의 적용결과 모의된 유출 수문곡선은 관측 수문곡선을 잘 재현하였으며, 이에 따라 격자 네트워크 해석 과정의 실유역 적용이 타당한 것으로 나타났다. It needs to conceptualize watershed with triangular or rectangular elements and to analyze the changes in hydrological components of each element for distributed modeling of rainfall-runoff process. This study is the network analysis of watershed grid for flow routing occurred in each element when analyzing rainfall-runoff process by one-dimensional kinematic wave equation. Single flow direction from D8-method(deterministic eight-neighbors method) is used, and the information of flow direction and flow accumulation are used to determine the computation order of each element. The application theory of finite volume method is suggested for each flow direction pattern between elements, and it is applied it to calculate the flow of each grid. Network analysis method from this study is applied to GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model) which is physically based distributed rainfall-runoff model, and the results from simplified hypothetical watersheds are compared with <TEX>$Vflo^{TM}$</TEX> to examine the reasonability of the method. It is applied to Jungrangcheon watershed in Han river for verification, and examination of the applicability to real site. The results from Jungrangcheon watershed show good agreement with measured hydrographs, and the application of the network analysis method to real site is proper.

유한체적법을 이용한 격자기반의 분포형 강우-유출 모형 개발

유역의 수문현상을 해석하기 위해서는 다양한 지형자료와 수문 시계열자료가 필요하다. 최근 들어 DEM(Digital Elevation Model)과 수자원 주제도와 같은 지형자료 뿐만 아니라 수치예보자료 및 강우레이더의 관측자료와 같은 수문 시계열자료 또한 격자 형태로 제공되고 있으며, 이를 활용한 수문분석에 대한 다양한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 격자형 자료를 이용하여 효과적으로 단기간의 강우-유출 현상을 모의하기 위한 물리적 기반의 분포형 강우-유출 모형인 GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model)을 개발하였다. 지표면 유출과 하도 유출의 모의는 운동파 방정식을 이용하고 있으며, 침투량 산정을 위해서 Green-Ampt 모형을 이용하고 있다. 지배방정식은 유한 체적법을 이용하여 이산화 하였으며, TDMA(TriDiagonal Matrix Algorithm) 방법을 이용하여 연립방정식을 풀고, 비선형 항에 대해서는 Newton-Raphson 방법으로 반복 계산함으로써 수렴해를 도출하였다. 개발된 모형은 단순화된 가상의 유역에 대해서 적용한 결과를 <TEX>$Vflo^{TM}$</TEX> 모형의 모의결과와 비교함으로써 타당성을 검토하였다. 또한 위천 유역의 적용을 통해 모형의 검증 및 실제 유역에 대한 적용성을 검토하였으며, 모의결과는 관측유량의 재현성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. To analyze hydrologic processes in a watershed requires both various geographical data and hydrological time series data. Recently, not only geographical data such as DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and hydrologic thematic map but also hydrological time series from numerical weather prediction and rainfall radar have been provided as grid data, and there are studies on hydrologic analysis using these grid data. In this study, GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model) which is physically-based distributed rainfall-runoff model has been developed to simulate short term rainfall-runoff process effectively using these grid data. Kinematic wave equation is used to simulate overland flow and channel flow, and Green-Ampt model is used to simulate infiltration process. Governing equation is discretized by finite volume method. TDMA(TriDiagonal Matrix Algorithm) is applied to solve systems of linear equations, and Newton-Raphson iteration method is applied to solve non-linear term. Developed model was applied to simplified hypothetical watersheds to examine model reasonability with the results from <TEX>$Vflo^{TM}$</TEX>. It was applied to Wicheon watershed for verification, and the applicability to real site was examined, and simulation results showed good agreement with measured hydrographs.
