Hotspots and Frontier Analysis of Green Building Research based on CiteSpace

To examine the worldwide progress of green building and identify the areas of research focus and emerging trends over the last ten years, employed CiteSpace software to quantitatively analyze a selection of literature on green building from 2013 to 2023 in the WOS core collection. The key journals, major institutions and countries involved in the study were sorted out, and the research topics of literature high citation analysis were carried out. The research hotspots and frontiers were obtained through keyword co-occurrence, clustering, emergence and timeline analysis: 1) consumption, strategy, thermal performance, emissions are four words of the highest centrality; 2) The five major research topics are new building materials, sustainable development, green innovation, environmental impact, and building information model; 3) The combination of green building and intelligent building is the development trend; 4) Three frontier research directions are green finance, energy simulation and geopolymer concrete. Based on the above analysis, it can be concluded that: 1) Promote the further integration with BIM technology; 2) Sustainable development is still a hot topic; 3) Focus on the exploration of green building materials; 4) AI green buildings will become a trend.

A Study on the Green Building Trend in China—From 2001 to 2022, Focusing on Research Topic Words

The Chinese government has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Consequently, a shift towards green building development in the construction industry is inevitable. The purpose of this study is to summarize and predict the development direction of China’s green buildings by understanding their changing trends over time. Accordingly, this study employed content analysis as the research method to analyze 69 research papers and their topic words published from 2001 to 2022, with further in-depth analysis from four sub-dimensions: technical, economic, policy, and systemic. Overall, since 2000, China’s green building research has mainly focused on energy-saving technology and economic aspects, with particular attention being paid to the role of incentive policies. Research on the energy-saving renovation of existing buildings is insufficient, and research on building energy-saving management systems has been scarce. This may be related to China’s emphasis on technology and its neglect of management functions such as operations and maintenance. Considering the important role of management in the construction industry, it is crucial for the academic community to strengthen research on a comprehensive and systematic green building management system and for the Chinese government to increase its support for green building management and practices.

The Future of Green Building Research – A Cascade Approach of Bibliometric Analysis and Topic Modelling

Green building research has received a lot of attention from both academicians and practitioners. Even though, this has resulted in a surge in Green Building literature in the recent times, the review of the literature has either being too focused on specific aspects or too broad. This study attempts to address this issue by employing a combination of bibliometric analysis and topic modelling. The inclusion of a stringent quality filter and use of CorEx topic modelling has enabled us to generate a list of future research directions, which were further streamlined through manual intervention. The study has revealed a few very promising few research directions including the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Green Building, Building Information System (BIM) for Green Building, development of sustainable materials and construction methods, socio-economic impact assessment of Green Buildings and incorporation of Internal Environmental Quality principles into built environment. The findings of the study are an integration of recommendations by many impactful studies in the Green Building literature and have tried to be a true testament to the idea that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

Information model of green building research in the Arctic: methodological aspects

The article raises the question of the need to create a tool for complex scientific research based on an information model. The sphere of green construction in the northern and Arctic regions was chosen as the sphere of comprehensive scientific research. The paper defines the tasks of a comprehensive study, its stages, as well as a set of models used in the study. The methodology of complex scientific research has been developed. Scientific research methods are defined for each stage and the model used. An information model of a comprehensive scientific study of green construction in the Arctic has been developed. The necessity of using research information model (RIM) for the implementation of a set of tasks is substantiated.

Green Building Concepts and Technologies in Ethiopia: The Case of Wegagen Bank Headquarters Building

The building sector is a key contributor to climate change, accounting for 40% of global energy consumption and 39% of CO2 emissions. Presently, green buildings have been viewed as crucial strategies to reduce the negative effects of the construction sector. Yet green building research is often carried out in developed countries, while relatively little is known in sub-Saharan African countries. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate the extent of adoption of green building concepts and technologies in Ethiopian buildings, with particular reference to the Wegagen Bank Headquarters building. The study employed an interview, which was underpinned by observation. The quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics while the qualitative data were analyzed through content and context analysis. Results revealed that while the building provides convenient access to transportation; it lacks designated open spaces. Based on the findings, the widely used technologies were energy-saving lighting, highly efficient plumbing fixtures, and external solar shading system. Lack of awareness, lack of policy, insufficient professional skills, the perception that green buildings are expensive, and lack of green building materials hindered the adoption of the concepts. Therefore, the study suggests developing green building policy and rating systems, professional capacity building, and awareness creation as important measures.

Status and Prospects of Green Building in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region with a Focus on the Moroccan Context

To promote the development of the Green Building (GB) concept in developing countries, this paper treated the combination of the scientometric analysis of green building research in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, with investigation into the current state of deployment of GB and barriers to sustainable construction practices in the Moroccan construction industry. A scientometric method was used to analyze 159 articles published from 2000 to 2021, and a survey of 167 Moroccan professionals with green building experience was conducted to understand the stakeholders’ position. The examination of the dataset reveals the significant contribution in GB research from Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia with 27 articles). The adoption of GB in the Moroccan construction industry is not apparent. Four clusters for the twelve barriers have been identified by the clustering analysis. They were attributed to government, social and awareness barriers, design phase barriers, high initial costs, and technology barriers. This paper provides stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the current research, its gaps, inter-regional and international cooperation, and future direction in the MENA region. This could aid practitioners and policymakers in taking the proper actions to mitigate obstacles for GB adoption.

Innovation in Green Building Sector for Sustainable Future

Recent advancements in green building technologies (GBTs) have grown substantially, as an outcome of the environmental, economic and societal benefits. It has the potential to move toward sustainable development, specifically related to climate change. In GBTs, the main objective is to use energy, water and other resources in a balanced way, without using them extensively. This will improve the environmental conditions. Green buildings (GBs) are beneficial when it comes to energy consumption and emissions; low maintenance and operation costs; boosting health and productivity; etc. There is a lack of a critical review of the past or present research work in the area of the Green Building Technology (GBT) sector to identify the future roadmap for sustainable green building technologies. A critical review, with the help of proper research methodology, was identified. The scope of this study is to analyze the existing work on different issues, and find different key issues in green building research, which has minimal use of natural resources, is cost-effective and is designed and constructed for a longer duration, considering future prospects. This paper examines the state of green building construction today and makes recommendations for further study and development which will be necessary for a sustainable future. In order to encourage research, this study also identified a few possible future research directions in sustainable development.

A critical review of African green building research

ABSTRACT A key component of green building diffusion is green building research. Globally, sustainable and green building research is advancing. However, there exists scanty research output on green building diffusion at the regional level. This paper presents a critical review of the existing body of knowledge on green building research, focusing on the African context. The major areas covered include green building research study trends, common topics and cross-country contributions to the body of knowledge. The study highlights the social aspects and economic issues of green building adoption and implementation and tailored green building rating tools. The study deployed a triple bottom line outlay in presenting the findings derived from extant research. In particular, the study uncovered that the coverage of African green building research is similar to that at the global level. Moreover, although social and economic factors influencing green buildings’ implementation were noted, environment-oriented research remained dominant. The study recommends that forthcoming scholars need to advance research knowledge on the identification of cost–benefit evidence of adopting green buildings, application of information communication technology in green building research and theoretical insights underpinning green building diffusion.

A topical network based analysis and visualization of global research trends on green building from 1990 to 2020

The explosive growth of green building (GB) research over the past few decades has posed great challenges for researchers to effectively grasp the holistic GB research status. This paper presents a text mining based method to identify the key research topics and trends from the existing abundant GB research publications. In total, 2421 articles are retrieved from the Web of Science core database. Subsequently, three mutually integrated text mining techniques, including the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) modeling, Word2vec, and community network analysis, are employed for knowledge discovery. Results show that the number of GB research topics increased from 1990 to 2020, while design optimization and energy efficient measures have always been the research hotspots. The identified research themes are further categorized into nine general research areas, including GB design, energy saving, GB rating system, life cycle evaluation, incentive and hindrances, post-occupancy evaluation, GB technologies, GB market, and management aspects of GB. Based on the revealed emerging research themes in recent ten years, three research directions are further proposed, such as green building market, employment of digital technologies, and safety risks in GB projects. This research provides an applicable quantitative method to efficiently identify the research topics from the extensive research publications and establishes a comprehensive knowledge framework of the GB research status at different stages.

Implementation and Impacts of Education for Sustainable Development: Experience of Universitas Gadjah Mada

A green physical setting would need green behavior and culture to sustain and function properly. Education is a key component to form a sustainable mindset and lifestyle for society, especially youth. As a university with a vision to be a resilient and healthy campus, Universitas Gadjah Mada has actively involved in providing education for sustainable development. The activities have commenced since 2016 through Integrated Smart and Green Building research group and involve participants from both internal and external audiences. Internal target audiences were primarily freshman UGM students and later extended to include primary and high school students. External audiences were the government and stakeholders from the commercial sector. The program was designed to increase awareness on sustainable development and encourage everyone to take part to achieve its goals. Students were educated on the importance of sustainable lifestyle and expected to practice green behavior in their daily life. For stakeholders, a focus group discussion was organized to start a conversation for the formulation of green building regulation. There were observable immediate changes in cognitive and behavorial domain toward sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable development is a long term vision and it needs participation from everyone. Higher education as a center of knowledge should actively provide society with education to achieve sustainable development.

A Review Paper on Green Building Research

One of the most common issues on the word right now is green building technology, with the goal of reducing the development industry's various negative effects on the environment, society, and economy. Because pollution and global warming are quickly expanding over the planet, the world urgently requires a sustainable and reasonable development. Because of the increase in Green House Gases (GHGs), dramatic climatical differences occurring everyday have been noted and are being faced by almost everyone all over the world. Within settled countries such as the United States of America, Russia, Australia, and the United Kingdom, there have already been rigorous steps taken to achieve workable development, as well as rules and regulations enacted by their respective governments to assist and accomplish a workable and environmentally approachable development of their countries. Research Hotspots and Tendency of Green Building Based on Bibliometric Analysis

Green building is a research hotspot in the field of Construction Engineering in recent years. This paper is based on 987 articles collected from the web of Science (WOS) core collection database, using Excel as the data statistical tool, the statistical research is carried out from the aspects of time output, hot institutions, hot journals, hot authors; VOSviewer is used to analyze the knowledge graph of hot authors and hot countries and regions, CiteSpace is used to analyze the co-occurrence words and burst words of Keywords, and the frontier of international green building research is obtained. The results show that: the research process of green building can be divided into three main stages: initial development, stable development, rapid development; At present, the eight major research topics are green roof, comparative assessment, building health, conventional building material, engineering design, building green, indoor environment quality, low-carbon integrated power grid.

A comprehensive review on green buildings research: bibliometric analysis during 1998-2018.

Buildings account for nearly 2/5ths of global energy expenditure. Due to this figure, the 90s witnessed the rise of green buildings (GBs) that were designed with the purpose of lowering the demand for energy, water, and materials resources while enhancing environmental protection efforts and human well-being over time. This paper examines recent studies and technologies related to the design, construction, and overall operation of GBs and determines potential future research directions in this area of study. This global review of green building development in the last two decades is conducted through bibliometric analysis on the Web of Science, via the Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index databases. Publication performance, countries’ characteristics, and identification of key areas of green building development and popular technologies were conducted via social network analysis, big data method, and S-curve predictions. A total of 5246 articles were evaluated on the basis of subject categories, journals’ performance, general publication outputs, and other publication characteristics. Further analysis was made on dominant issues through keyword co-occurrence, green building technologies by patent analysis, and S-curve predictions. The USA, China, and the UK are ranked the top three countries where the majority of publications come from. Australia and China had the closest relationship in the global network cooperation. Global trends of the top 5 countries showed different country characteristics. China had a steady and consistent growth in green building publications each year. The total publications on different cities had a high correlation with cities’ GDP by Baidu Search Index. Also, barriers and contradictions such as cost, occupant comfort, and energy consumption were discussed in developed and developing countries. Green buildings, sustainability, and energy efficiency were the top three hotspots identified through the whole research period by the cluster analysis. Additionally, green building energy technologies, including building structures, materials, and energy systems, were the most prevalent technologies of interest determined by the Derwent Innovations Index prediction analysis. This review reveals hotspots and emerging trends in green building research and development and suggests routes for future research. Bibliometric analysis, combined with other useful tools, can quantitatively measure research activities from the past and present, thus bridging the historical gap and predicting the future of green building development.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11356-021-12739-7.

Green building research from design to operation in the past 20 years: A perspective

The promotion and development of green buildings provides a promising solution to the current energy and environmental challenges we are facing. In the recent years, the focus of green buildings has shifted from “quantitative improvement” to “occupant-oriented” “qualitative improvement”. Meanwhile, the advancement of information technology, energy and materials has created cutting-edge tools for planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings. In this paper, we have identified several trends and urgent needs for the future development of green buildings. It includes the new method of cross-disciplinary whole life cycle collaborative design from monomer to urban scale, AI-assisted optimization design, performance-oriented digital design, healthy building/smart building design, active and passive integrated equipment terminal design and development and application of new materials, etc.

Research on New Energy-saving and Efficient Utilization of Buildings Based on Renewable Energy

Against the background of the increasing total energy consumption and the proportion of energy consumption in China, the energy crisis is intensifying. The application of renewable energy such as solar energy, wind energy and geothermal energy to building energy conservation is a major decision to solve the energy problem of buildings. The thesis combines the theories of green building evaluation standards, the problems facing the use of renewable energy, the value expression and use of renewable energy, and the impact of renewable energy on green building research. The influence of outdoor buried pipe layout and the arrangement of heat collector panels in the solar system on the feasibility research method in green building research, with a view to providing a certain reference for the subsequent research of new green residential projects in China.

Intermediary Governance Mechanism of Collaborative Innovation in Green Building Industry, University and Research

Green technology is the dominant technology. The collaborative innovation of green building, industry, university and research must attach great importance to the industrialization of green technology in the upstream industry, which is of great significance to the economic development under the new normal. The research content and methods based on market orientation and production-use cooperation are still limited to framework and experience research. The research on bilateral collaborative innovation cooperation mode and contract governance of upstream and downstream enterprises that touched on the core issues of “production, study and research” has not been carried out in depth. Taking the collaborative innovation of production, research and research in green building as the research module, this study conducts in-depth research on the lack of design intermediary innovation in the technology supply side (green technology production enterprise) and technology demand side (green construction project owner). This paper proposes a bilateral collaborative innovation network structure with industry-university-research and engineering innovation functions.

The state-of-the-art of green building research (2010-2019): A bibliometric review

The construction industry is one of the largest energy consumers and also the largest carbon emitter. Under the background of sustainable development, energy saving and emission reduction in construction industry has become an important task. Green building can save resources and energy, so it has been widely concerned, and many studies on green building have been carried out. To better grasp the latest research progress of green building, this paper conducts a bibliometric review of 1068 research papers related to green building from 2010 to 2019. The results show that the research of green building is on the rise by rear, performance and sustainability are the key research contents, and many countries are actively participating in the research of green building. This paper provides a reference for the progress research of green building.

Visualized analysis of global green buildings: Development, barriers and future directions

Abstract Green building is an important measure to deal with energy and environment problems in the construction sector of the world. In this study, knowledge mapping analysis is used, and 3,060 articles are selected for further study (1900–2019). Based on CiteSpace (5.3.R4 SE 64-bit), the knowledge base, hot topics and research trends of green-building-related research are presented. The key highlights of the overall analysis results are: (1) Research on green buildings has received more extensive attention in the 21st century. During 2000–2010, research on green buildings showed a steady growth trend. Since 2011, the amount of literature has increased rapidly, and green building research is in a period of rapid growth. (2) In the macro-disciplinary analysis, the trends and focus of applied green building research is highlighted. In addition to the environmental, political, economic, and computing fields that green building research has traditionally belonged to, in recent years, some journals have published green-building-related research in the fields of psychology, education, health, medicine, and animal science. (3) In the carrier analysis of meso-research findings, in terms of citation frequency, “Building & Environment,” “Energy & Buildings” and the “Journal of Cleaner Production” were the top three journals. In terms of influence, “Building & Environment,” “Building Research & Information” and “Solar Energy” were the top three journals. (4) In the microcosmic research topic analysis, a timeline visualization of a keyword co-occurrence network containing 14 clusters was generated. “Performance,” “Green Building,” “Sustainability,” “System” and “Construction” were the five most frequently used keywords in this field. Next, the key analysis results were: (5) According to the literature clustering results, 12 research hotspots of early research, intermediate research and recent research on green building were ascertained. (6) The indicators of the research frontier were divided into burst terms and burst articles, wherein the former was divided into four stages according to the burst order. Taking the latest frontier research as an example (i.e., barriers), the “CAPITAL” framework was constructed to overcome the barriers that inhibited the promotion of green buildings from five levels. Finally, the shortcomings of this research are summarized, and some suggestions for future research are put forward.

Green Construction Project: A Critical Review of Retrofitting Awarded Green Buildings in Malaysia

Technical-centered issues have gained far more importance in green building construction, however, the role of less technical related issues still have been left untouched or less paid attention. The project management processes and practices can contribute here and this research provides frontiers and boundaries of scope to bridge the technical and engineering areas in green building construction to project management practices and processes. Therefore, the project management researchers will have a broad view of the green building research areas. The study draws attention to investigate a position of project management, which is less associated with engineering and technology in construction, and to represent a framework based upon the case of successfully accomplished buildings. The current contribution and scope of green building, energy and project management are clarified. A semantic clustering analysis of the boundaries is implemented. 51 articles with the high impact factor (above 2.7) are selected and empirically reviewed. A literature synthesis approach is presented. Therefore, the findings are classified, and the assessment of evidence around the topics of energy scenario, green building and retrofitting, and cases of three awarded green buildings in Malaysia are facilitated. Derived from the structuralized empirical review, four core factors of retrofitting are identified: a) Energy efficiency improvement; b) Technological change; c) Organizational/managerial challenges, and d) Behavioural change. The contemplations of findings are suggested to be considered as crucial factors for every retrofitting building can be compared and discussed with respect to each of these categorized factors for enthusiast project management scholars. Green building and retrofitting of the existing green buildings have been a centre of attention for a decade. However, it appears that there is no current study which has been conducted to critically review and empirically study of previous research endeavours in order to define the frontiers and boundaries of the scope of this scientific sphere.

Project delivery attributes influencing green building project outcomes

PurposeWhile the general trends in green building (GB) research are known, there is not yet a detailed review of studies on project delivery attributes (PDAs) influencing GB project outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature to understand the contributions of existing research in this area and to identify the challenges, gaps, and lessons for the future research relating GB project delivery.Design/methodology/approachFor the systematic review, specially developed coding based on Boolean operators is used to search for relevant studies in major databases, i.e. Web of Science and Scopus. The studies from the initial search (443) are subjected to two rounds of scrutiny for shortlisting only relevant publications. Using a qualitative review of the shortlisted studies (20), the research objectives and findings of the studies are synthesized and critically analyzed. The contributions and challenges facing research in this area are identified. Future research directions are proposed.FindingsStudies in the area have established association between PDAs and various GB project success criteria. In the literature, some PDAs such as project delivery method have been given greater attention than others. Challenges facing PDA research in GB include: the limited number of GB project cases and the complexity of GB project delivery process involving an overwhelmingly large number of variables, thereby limiting scientific rigor and creating some gaps in knowledge. The interaction among PDAs and their cumulative effect on various project performance outcomes/metrics have not been studied, limiting the validity of the existing studies. Scope exists to apply a combination of non-linear, dynamic, probabilistic, explicit, and implicit modeling as well as inductive and deductive approaches to research in this area.Research limitations/implicationsExisting research findings have limited application in practice. Non-linear, dynamic, probabilistic, deductive, and inductive research techniques and approaches can substantially advance knowledge and lead to plausible findings that can be applied in practice.Originality/valueConsidering the critical role of PDAs in the successful delivery of GBs, the review provides clear directions for future research.
