Biomass of Eichhornia crassipes as an Alternative Substrate for the Formation of Lettuce Seedlings

The production of lettuce has increased significantly due to the use of hydroponic systems that rely on substrates. Disposal and acquisition costs present problems, necessitating the identification of sustainable alternatives. The present study aimed to evaluate the use of Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) dry matter in a substrate for the formation of lettuce seedlings. Water plants were collected to obtain their dry matter, and twelve mixtures were formed with Sphagnum and perlite. Mixtures with more water hyacinth dry matter exhibited greater water retention. However, these mixtures also lost water at a faster rate than those containing primarily Sphagnum dry matter did. Higher percentages of germination were detected in the mixtures with water hyacinth dry matter, but these seedlings also presented higher concentrations of proline, such as 16.0 µg mL−1. The mixtures with water hyacinth dry matter presented the highest ion concentrations, mainly at high levels of humidity. Mixtures with a high proportion of water hyacinth dry matter had a greater water retention capacity and a high percentage of lettuce seed that germinated. The mixtures with a higher proportion of Sphagnum led to greater root length, greater concentrations of chlorophyll in cotyledonary leaves, and better morphological development of the seedlings.

Enhancing Soil Resilience: Bacterial Alginate Hydrogel vs. Algal Alginate in Mitigating Agricultural Challenges.

Erosion and tillage changes negatively the soil physical structure, which directly impacts agricultural systems and consequently food security. To mitigate these adverse modifications, different polymeric materials from synthetic and natural sources, have been used as soil conditioners to improve the hydro-mechanical behavior of affected soils. One of the most interesting and used natural polymers is the alginate hydrogel. Although commercially available alginate hydrogels are primarily sourced from algal, they can also be sourced from bacteria. The gelation capacity of these hydrogels is determined by their molecular properties, which, in turn, are influenced by the production conditions. Bacterial alginate hydrogel production offers the advantage of precise control over environmental conditions during cultivation and extraction, thereby maintaining and enhancing their molecular properties. This, in turn, results in higher molecular weight and improved gelation capacity. In this study, we compared the effects of bacterial alginate (BH) and algal alginate (AH) hydrogels over the mechanical, hydraulic, and structural behavior of coarse quartz sand as a model soil. Mechanically, it was observed that the treatment with the lowest concentration of bacteria alginate hydrogel (BH1) reached higher values of yield strength, Young's modulus (E), shear modulus (G) and strain energy (U) than those treatments with algal alginate hydrogel (AH). Furthermore, the increase in the aggregate stability could be associated with the improvement of mechanical parameters. On the other hand, a greater water retention capacity was observed in the BH treatments, as well as a greater decrease in hydraulic conductivity with respect to the AH and control treatments. All these changes could be explained by the formation of bridge-like structures between the sand particles and the hydrogel, and this alteration may result in a shift in the mechanical and wettability characteristics of the treated soils. Finally, our findings emphasize the superior impact of bacterial alginate hydrogel on enhancing the mechanical and hydraulic properties of coarse quartz sand compared to traditional algal alginate. Besides, the use of bacterial alginate hydrogel could be useful to counteract erosion and water scarcity scenarios in agricultural systems.

Simulation of Subsurface Drainage in the Sugarcane Crop under Different Spacing and Drain Depths

Agricultural land drainage is an instrument for growing production and a tool for the conservation of land resources. The performance of land drainage systems is thus critical for achieving sustainable agricultural production Recently, many types of software have been developed in this field for modeling and simulating the performance of these systems. SISDRENA is a simulation model of the performance of underground drainage systems. The main objectives of this paper are to simulate different combination of depths and spaces between drains and to analyze their impact on potential sugarcane productivity in the western plains of Venezuela using a land drainage system model. Therefore, three climatic scenarios were defined by annual precipitation: dry years (25% below average), normal (mean) and humid (75% above average). The scenarios were implemented in three different soil types: sandy loam, loam and silt loam, with a hydraulic conductivity of 0.19, 0.26 and 0.04 m day−1, respectively. The simulation of the yield related to soil deficit (YRD) and water stress (YRW) indicated that the highest yields were reached for the larger spacing between drains and the high conductivity hydraulic of soils. In relation to the average relative productivity (YT), it was shown that in soils with a greater water retention capacity there is an inversely proportional relationship between the spacing between drains and the productivity. We concluded that in order to reach the maximum sugarcane yield, the effect of hydraulic conductivity is more important than the changes in the precipitation pattern.

Production of kale seedlings on substrates containing proportions of organic compost

One of the difficulties in the kale seedlings production in containers is to ensure the production of aboveground biomass with a limited portion of roots, restricted to a small volume of substrate. Thus, we investigated whether substrates with organic compost added to it associated with kale cultivars interfere in the quality of seedlings produced in a greenhouse. Here, we studied two kale cultivars and five substrates. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks, with treatments arranged in a bifactorial scheme (2 x 5), with three replications. We carried out the physical and chemical characterization of the substrates and evaluated attributes of the aerial part and root system of the kale seedlings. The results showed that the substrate with the highest water retention was the one without the addition of organic compost. The greater the proportion of organic compound added to the substrate, the higher the nitrogen, phosphorus and organic carbon values. Seedlings produced in the substrate with greater water retention capacity had better performance in relation to the morphology of the aerial part and the morphology of the root system. We conclude that seedlings of kale cultivars associated with substrates with higher water retention have better quality. Seedlings of the ‘Gaudina’ cultivar stand out for their better phytometric morphology, while seedlings of the ‘Manteiga’ cultivar have higher quality of root biomass.

The durum wheat NAC transcription factor TtNAC2A enhances drought stress tolerance in Arabidopsis

Plant specific NAC transcription factors play diverse roles in plant development and stress responses. However, their biological roles in crop plants such as wheat remain poorly described. Here, we report the isolation and functional characterization of novel durum wheat TtNAC2A gene which acts as a transcription activator in yeast. Expression profiling analyses revealed that TtNAC2A gene is expressed in several wheat tissues and at different stages of seed development. Moreover, TtNAC2A was up-regulated in leaves and roots after exposure to salt, PEG and exogenous abscisic acid treatments, and this up-regulation was confirmed by functional promoter analysis in Arabidopsis. Furthermore, transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing TtNAC2A showed enhanced drought tolerance and hypersensitivity to ABA. This phentotype was accompanied by a greater water retention capacity, attenuated oxidative stress, lower electrolyte leakage and higher proline contents, compared to wild type plants. The TtNAC2A-mediated drought tolerance also corroborated with an activation of a subset of stress-responsive genes, including AtRD22, AtRD29A and AtRD29B. Thus, TtNAC2A functions as a positive regulator of drought stress tolerance and constitutes an attractive candidate for stress breading in wheat crops.

Characterization of different types of broiler bedding including dehydrated grass and their influence on production.

The objective is to evaluate different bedding materials, including dehydrated grass, on performance and carcass yield and verify the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of materials. The completely randomized experiment comprised 1,080 chicks in a 3×2 factorial design with three levels of dehydrated grass (0%, 25%, and 50%) and two bedding materials (rice husks and shavings). Total microorganism count and physicochemical characteristics, surface temperature of birds, and performance of birds were analyzed up to 42days of age, when birds were slaughtered, and carcass yield was evaluated. The inclusion of grass showed a higher microbiological count after 1day, stabilizing with materials after 28days. The inclusion of 50% of dehydrated grass resulted in a higher surface bed temperature at 42days. Inclusions above 25% of grass have a lower density and a greater water retention capacity, pH, moisture, and total nitrogen, in addition to a lower FDA in its structure. The highest ammonia emissions occurred with the inclusion of 25% of grass. The inclusion of dehydrated grass did not affect performance and carcass yield, favoring feed conversion at the initial stages. The inclusion of grass can replace up to 25% of shavings without harming physicochemical parameters of materials and birds' performance.

Analysis of water retention in soil horizons of two open trenches on a slope of Serra do Mar, Brazil, susceptible to landslides

This research presents and analyzes the results of Soil Water Characteristic Curves (SWCC) for the soil horizons (A, B and C) of two different trenches (TR3 and TR7) opened along a slope located in the Serra da Mar mountain range, Brazil. Microaggregations were observed in soil horizons of both trenches, which changed the textural classification of the soils. TR7 showed more macropores than TR3, especially on horizon C. Unimodal SWCC were obtained for soils of the horizon A for both trenches. Instead, bimodal SWCC were obtained for soils of the deeper horizons (B and C). All soil horizons showed the phenomenon of hysteresis, and it’s more expressive in the macroporosity part. In TR7 the water retention capacity is lower in B and C, facilitating the drainage, however, horizons B and C of TR3 presented greater water retention capacity for the same matric suction value. Depending on the intensity and duration of rainfall, the horizons B and C of both trenches may suffer a decrease of shear strength, without necessarily saturating. The A horizon of TR3 can undergo an erosive process for heavy and short rains.

Quality of tomato seedlings produced in substrates

A difficulty in the production of tomato seedlings in containers is to assure the production of shoot biomass with limited portion of roots, restricted to a small volume of substrate. Therefore, we investigated if substrates associated with tomato cultivars interfere in the seedling quality. In this study, the treatments used were two tomato cultivars and three substrates. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks, with treatments arranged in a two-factorial scheme (2 x 3), with four replications. We carried out the physical and chemical characterization of the substrates and evaluated the attributes of the shoot and the root system of tomato seedlings. The results showed that the substrate with the highest water retention was Horta 2® and the lightest material was TN Gold®. Still, seedlings produced on the substrate with greater water retention capacity had higher performance in relation to the shoot morphology and the root system morphology. We conclude that the seedling quality of tomato cultivars is not associated with the studied substrates and that seedlings produced in substrate with greater water retention have better quality.

Plant Organic Matter Really Matters: Pedological Effects of Kūpaoa (Dubautia menziesii) Shrubs in a Volcanic Alpine Area, Maui, Hawai’i

This study examines litter accumulation and associated soil fertility islands under kūpaoa (Dubautia menziesii) shrubs, common at high elevations in Haleakalā National Park (Maui, Hawai’i). The main purposes were to: (i) Analyze chemical and physical properties of kūpaoa leaf-litter, (ii) determine soil changes caused by organic-matter accumulation under plants, and (iii) compare these with the known pedological effects of silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense) rosettes in the same area. Surface soil samples were gathered below shrubs, and compared with paired adjacent, bare sandy soils; two soil profiles were also contrasted. Litter patches under kūpaoa covered 0.57–3.61 m2 area and were 22–73 mm thick. A cohesive, 5–30-mm-thick soil crust with moderate aggregate stability developed underneath litter horizons; grain aggregation was presumably related to high organic-matter accumulation. Shear strength and compressibility measurements showed crusts opposed significantly greater resistance to physical removal and erosion than adjacent bare soils. As compared to contiguous bare ground areas, soils below shrubs had higher organic matter percentages, darker colors, faster infiltration rates, and greater water-retention capacity. Chemical soil properties were greatly altered by organic matter: Cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+), N, P, and cation-exchange capacity, were higher below plants. Further processes affecting soils under kūpaoa included microclimatic amelioration, and additional water input by fog-drip beneath its dense canopy. Substrate modifications were more pronounced below D. menziesii than A. sandwicense. Organic matter and available nutrient contents were higher under shrubs, where soils also showed greater infiltration and water-retention capacity. These trends resulted from contrasting litter properties between plant species, as kūpaoa leaves have higher nutrient content than silversword foliage. Different litter dynamics and reproduction strategies may also explain contrasting soil properties between the monocarpic rosettes and polycarpic kūpaoa. By inducing substantial substrate changes, Dubautia shrubs alter—or even create—different microhabitats and exert critical control on alpine soil development at Haleakalā.

Simultaneous overexpression of CuZnSOD and cAPX from Arachis hypogaea leads to salinity stress tolerance in tobacco

Stress leads to generation of reactive oxygen species in living cells, which are scavenged by antioxidant enzymes. In the present study, genes encoding for two different antioxidant enzymes, namely cytosolic superoxide dismutase and cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase isolated from salt-tolerant cell lines of Arachis hypogaea, were simultaneously overexpressed in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) and the effect of their overexpression on alleviation of salinity stress was evaluated. The co-expression of AhCuZnSOD and AhcAPX in tobacco plants helped the resulting transgenic plants in overcoming salt stress. Compared to the wild-type plants, transgenic plants survived longer periods of salinity stress and displayed improved recovery after removal of the stress. The transgenic tobacco plants exhibited better photosynthetic efficiency, higher germination rate, more chlorophyll content, higher levels of total antioxidant enzyme activities, greater water retention capacity, higher proline accumulation, lower level of malondialdehyde content, and reactive oxygen species accumulation under stress conditions in comparison to the WT plants. Our analysis revealed that combined overexpression of the two antioxidant enzymes improved the salinity tolerance in transgenic plants.

Biochar Source and Application Rate Effects on Soil Water Retention Determined Using Wetting Curves

Biochar is a stable carbon substance produced by the pyrolysis of biomass and used as a soil amendment. Biochar application to soil has resulted in agronomic benefits, including improved water-holding capacity. However, limited studies exist quantifying different biochars’ roles in soil water retention, especially when the soil is drier than field capacity. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of poultry litter and woodchip biochars, applied at various rates (i.e., 0, 5, and 10 Mg.ha-1 incorporated to a depth of 10 cm) to a loam soil, on the relationship between soil water potential and water content across a wide range of moisture conditions. Based on analysis of variance, the relationship between water potential and water content differed (P < 0.05) between biochar sources based on differing (P < 0.02) power-function coefficients, with poultry litter biochar having greater water retention capacity across a wide range of water potentials, but was unaffected by application rate. Based on regression analyses, application rate affected the relationship between water potential and water content for poultry litter biochar. Results indicate that biochar may not generally improve water retention at all water contents with one-time application rates. Additional experiments will be necessary to understand the impact on water retention of biochars produced from different feedstocks under varying pyrolysis conditions.

Steam explosion treatment of Eucalyptus globulus wood: Influence of operational conditions on chemical and structural modifications

This study evaluates the use of steam explosion (SE) as a pre-treatment of Eucalyptus globulus chips, aimed at making this wood suitable as feedstock in biorefineries or alternative processes such as biopulping. Several SE treatments were applied, modifying the following variables: previous hydration of the chips, number of SE cycles, and duration of the first cycle. Chemical composition and structural properties were analyzed after all treatments. Our results show that acetone and hot water extractives contents increased between 1.0% and 6.2% and between 3.6% and 7.1%, respectively, depending on SE operational conditions. Holocellulose content was also observed to decrease (9.4 to 15.6%), while the Klason lignin underwent a slight solubilization. Furthermore, greater water retention capacity and new bigger sized pores were found in the exploded samples. It is reasonable to expect that these changes would facilitate the subsequent implementation of chemical or biological treatments of the cellulose fraction in the biorefinery design.
