Identifying noise transients in gravitational-wave data arising from nonlinear couplings

Abstract Noise in various interferometer systems can sometimes couple non-linearly to create excess noise in the gravitational wave (GW) strain data. Third-order statistics, such as bicoherence and biphase, can identify these couplings and help discriminate those occurrences from astrophysical GW signals. However, the conventional analysis can yield large bicoherence values even when no phase-coupling is present, thereby, resulting in false identifications. Introducing artificial phase randomization in computing the bicoherence reduces such occurrences with negligible impact on its effectiveness for detecting true phase-coupled disturbances. We demonstrate this property with simulated disturbances – focusing only on short-duration ones (lasting up to a few seconds) in this work. Statistical hypothesis testing is used for distinguishing phase-coupled disturbances from non-phase coupled ones when employing the phase-randomized bicoherence. We also obtain an expression for the bicoherence value that minimizes the sum of the probabilities of false positives and false negatives. This can be chosen as a threshold for shortlisting bicoherence triggers for further scrutiny for the presence of non-linear coupling. Finally, the utility of the phase-randomized bicoherence analysis in GW time-series data is demonstrated for the following three scenarios: (1) Finding third-order statistical similarities within categories of noise transients, such as blips and koi fish. If these non-Gaussian noise transients, or glitches, have a common source, their bicoherence maps can have similarities arising from common bifrequencies related to that source. (2) Differentiating linear or non-linear phase-coupled glitches from compact binary coalescence signals through their bicoherence maps. This is explained with a simulated signal. (3) Identifying repeated bifrequencies in the second and third observation runs (i.e., O2 and O3) of LIGO and Virgo.

Likelihood of white dwarf binaries to dominate the astrophysical gravitational wave background in the mHz band

Context. The astrophysical gravitational wave background (AGWB) is a collective signal of astrophysical gravitational wave sources dominated by compact binaries. One key science goal of current and future gravitational wave detectors is to obtain its measurement. Aims. We aim to determine the population of compact binaries dominating the AGWB in the mHz band. We revisit and update an earlier work by Farmer & Phinney (2003, MNRAS, 346, 1197) to model the astrophysical gravitational wave background sourced by extragalactic white dwarf binaries in the mHz frequency band. Methods. We calculated the signal using a single-metallicity model for the white dwarf population in the Universe using the global star formation history. Results. We estimate the white dwarf AGWB amplitude to be ∼60% higher than the earlier estimate. We also find that the overall shape of the white dwarf AGWB shows a good fit with a broken power law combined with an exponential cut-off. Conclusions. We compare our results to present-day best estimates for the background due to black hole and neutron star binaries, finding that the white dwarf component is likely to dominate in the mHz band. We provide an order-of-magnitude estimate that explains this hierarchy and we comment on the implications for future missions that aim to detect the AGWB. We also note that the black hole AGWB may only be detectable at high frequency. We outline several improvements that can be made to our estimate, however, these points are unlikely to change our main conclusion, which posits that the white dwarf AGWB dominates the mHz band.

Non-Gaussianity from the cross-correlation of the astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background and the Cosmic Microwave Background

Since the first LIGO/Virgo detection, Gravitational Waves (GWs) have been very promising as a new complementary probe to understand our Universe. One of the next challenges of GW search is the detection and characterization of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB), that is expected to open a window on the very early Universe (cosmological background) and to provide us new information on astrophysical source populations (astrophysical background). One way to characterize the SGWB and to extract information about its origin is through the cross-correlation with other cosmological probes. To this aim, in this paper, we explore the cross-correlation between the astrophysical background anisotropies and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) ones. Such a signal is sensitive to primordial non-Gaussianity (nG) through the GW bias. Thus, we study the capability of next generation space-based interferometers to detect such a cross-correlation signal and to constrain primordial nG.

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You: Use and Abuse of Astrophysical Models in Gravitational-wave Population Analyses

One of the goals of gravitational-wave astrophysics is to infer the number and properties of the formation channels of binary black holes (BBHs); to do so, one must be able to connect various models with the data. We explore benefits and potential issues with analyses using models informed by population synthesis. We consider five possible formation channels of BBHs, as in Zevin et al. (2021b). First, we confirm with the GWTC-3 catalog what Zevin et al. (2021b) found in the GWTC-2 catalog, i.e., that the data are not consistent with the totality of observed BBHs forming in any single channel. Next, using simulated detections, we show that the uncertainties in the estimation of the branching ratios can shrink by up to a factor of ∼1.7 as the catalog size increases from 50 to 250, within the expected number of BBH detections in LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA's fourth observing run. Finally, we show that this type of analysis is prone to significant biases. By simulating universes where all sources originate from a single channel, we show that the influence of the Bayesian prior can make it challenging to conclude that one channel produces all signals. Furthermore, by simulating universes where all five channels contribute but only a subset of channels are used in the analysis, we show that biases in the branching ratios can be as large as ∼50% with 250 detections. This suggests that caution should be used when interpreting the results of analyses based on strongly modeled astrophysical subpopulations.

Circular Polarization of the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background.

The circular polarization of gravitational waves is a powerful observable to test parity violation in gravity and to distinguish between the primordial or the astrophysical origin of the stochastic background. This property comes from the expected unpolarized nature of the homogeneous and isotropic astrophysical background, contrary to some specific cosmological sources that can produce a polarized background. However, in this work we show that there is also a non-negligible amount of circular polarization in the astrophysical background, generated by Poisson fluctuations in the number of unresolved sources, which is present in the third-generation interferometers with signal-to-noise ratio larger than 2. We also explain in which cases the gravitational wave maps can be cleaned from this extra source of noise, exploiting the frequency and the angular dependence, in order to search for signals from the early Universe. Future studies about the detection of polarized cosmological backgrounds with ground- and space-based interferometers should account for the presence of such a foreground contribution.

Overlap reduction functions for a polarized stochastic gravitational-wave background in the Einstein Telescope-Cosmic Explorer and the LISA-Taiji networks

The detection of gravitational waves from the coalescences of binary compact stars by current interferometry experiments has opened up a new era of gravitational-wave astrophysics and cosmology. The search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background is underway by correlating signals from a pair of detectors in the detector network formed by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA. In a previous work, we have developed a method based on spherical harmonic expansion to calculate the overlap reduction functions of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network for a polarized stochastic gravitational-wave background. In this work, we will apply the method to calculate the overlap reduction functions of third-generation detectors such as a ground-based network linking the Einstein Telescope, the Cosmic Explorer, and the LISA-Taiji joint space mission.

Precision cosmology with primordial GW backgrounds in presence of astrophysical foregrounds

The era of Gravitational-Wave (GW) astronomy will grant the detection of the astrophysical GW background from unresolved mergers of binary black holes, and the prospect of probing the presence of primordial GW backgrounds. In particular, the low-frequency tail of the GW spectrum for causally-generated primordial signals (like a phase transition) offers an excellent opportunity to measure unambiguously cosmological parameters as the equation of state of the universe, or free-streaming particles at epochs well before recombination. We discuss whether this programme is jeopardised by the uncertainties on the astrophysical GW foregrounds that coexist with a primordial background. We detail the motivated assumptions under which the astrophysical foregrounds can be assumed to be known in shape, and only uncertain in their normalisation. In this case, the sensitivity to a primordial signal can be computed by a simple and numerically agile procedure, where the optimal filter function subtracts the components of the astrophysical foreground that are close in spectral shape to the signal. We show that the degradation of the sensitivity to the signal in presence of astrophysical foregrounds is limited to a factor of a few, and only around the frequencies where the signal is closer to the foregrounds. Our results highlight the importance of modelling the contributions of eccentric or intermediate-mass black hole binaries to the GW background, to consolidate the prospects to perform precision cosmology with primordial GW backgrounds.

Architectural optimization and feature learning for high-dimensional time series datasets

As our ability to sense increases, we are experiencing a transition from data-poor problems, in which the central issue is a lack of relevant data, to data-rich problems, in which the central issue is to identify a few relevant features in a sea of observations. Motivated by applications in gravitational-wave astrophysics, we study a problem in which the goal is to predict the presence of transient noise artifacts in a gravitational-wave detector from a rich collection of measurements from the detector and its environment. We argue that feature learning---in which relevant features are optimized from data---is critical to achieving high accuracy. We introduce models that reduce the error rate by over 60% compared to the previous state of the art, which used fixed, hand-crafted features. Feature learning is useful not only because it can improve performance on prediction tasks; the results provide valuable information about patterns associated with phenomena of interest that would otherwise be impossible to discover. In our motivating application, features found to be associated with transient noise provide diagnostic information about its origin and suggest mitigation strategies. Learning in such a high-dimensional setting is challenging. Through experiments with a variety of architectures, we identify two key factors in high-performing models: sparsity, for selecting relevant variables within the high-dimensional observations, and depth, which confers flexibility for handling complex interactions and robustness with respect to temporal variations. We illustrate their significance through a systematic series of experiments on real gravitational-wave detector data. Our results provide experimental corroboration of common assumptions in the machine-learning community and have direct applicability to improving our ability to sense gravitational waves, as well as to a wide variety of problem settings with similarly high-dimensional, noisy, or partly irrelevant data.

The dipole of the astrophysical gravitational-wave background

One of the main pillars of the ΛCDM model is the Cosmological Principle, which states that our Universe is statistically isotropic and homogeneous on large scales. Here we test this hypothesis using the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background (AGWB) expected to be measured by the Einstein Telescope-Cosmic Explorer network; in particular we perform a numerical computation of the AGWB dipole, evaluating the intrinsic contribution due to clustering and the kinematic effect induced by the observer motion. We apply a component separation technique in the GW context to disentangle the kinematic dipole, the intrinsic dipole and the shot noise (SN), based on the observation of the AGWB at different frequencies. We show how this technique can also be implemented in matched-filtering to minimize the covariance which accounts for both instrumental noise and SN. Since GW detectors are essentially full-sky, we expect that this powerful tool can help in testing the isotropy of our Universe in the next future.

Cosmic Explorer: A Next-Generation Ground-Based Gravitational-Wave Observatory

Cosmic Explorer is a concept for a new laser interferometric observatory in the United States to extend ground-based gravitational-wave astrophysics into the coming decades. Aiming to begin operation in the 2030s, Cosmic Explorer will extend current and future detector technologies to a 40 km interferometric baseline—ten times larger than the LIGO observatories. Operating as part of a global gravitational-wave observatory network, Cosmic Explorer will have a cosmological reach, detecting black holes and neutron stars back to the times of earliest star formation. It will observe nearby binary collisions with enough precision to reveal details of the dynamics of the ultradense matter in neutron stars and to test the general-relativistic model of black holes.

Astrophysical gravitational-wave echoes from galactic nuclei

ABSTRACT Galactic nuclei (GNs) are dense stellar environments abundant in gravitational-wave (GW) sources for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), Virgo, and Kamioka Gravitational Wave Detector (KAGRA). The GWs may be generated by stellar-mass black hole (BH) or neutron star mergers following gravitational bremsstrahlung, dynamical scattering encounters, Kozai–Lidov-type oscillations driven by the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), or gas-assisted mergers if present. In this paper, we examine a smoking gun signature to identify sources in GNs: the GWs scattered by the central SMBH. This produces a secondary signal, an astrophysical GW echo, which has a very similar time–frequency evolution as the primary signal but arrives after a time delay. We determine the amplitude and time-delay distribution of the GW echo as a function of source distance from the SMBH. Between ${\sim} 10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\hbox{ and }90{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the detectable echoes arrive within ${\sim} (1\hbox{--}100)M_6\, \mathrm{s}$ after the primary GW for sources between 10 and 104 Schwarzschild radius, where $M_6=M_{{\rm SMBH},z}/(10^6\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot })$, and MSMBH, z is the observer-frame SMBH mass. The echo arrival times are systematically longer for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) primary GWs, where the GW echo rays are scattered at large deflection angles. In particular, ${\sim} 10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\hbox{--}90{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the distribution is shifted to ${\sim} (5\hbox{--}1800)M_6\, \mathrm{s}$ for sources, where the lower limit of echo detection is 0.02 of the primary signal amplitude. We find that ${\sim} 5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\hbox{--}30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ (${\sim} 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\hbox{--}7{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) of GW sources have an echo amplitude larger than 0.2–0.05 times the amplitude of the primary signal if the source distance from the SMBH is 50 (200) Schwarzschild radius. Non-detections can rule out that a GW source is near an SMBH.

Cosmology application of the astrophysics originated gravitational wave

We review the current status of the astrophysics-originated gravitational wave astronomy and several cosmology-related science topics of the future spaceborne/ground-based gravitational wave observatory. Specifically, we highlight the gravitational lensing and gravitational wave sirens-related science cases. We first introduce several astrophysical gravitational wave sources, including the compact binary system (stellar black hole binary, and neutron star binary), continuous-wave sources (fast-spinning neutron star, and extreme mass ratio binary system), and the galactic white dwarf binary. Second, we review gravitational wave time-delay strong lensing, lensing magnification, wave-optics and the diffraction effect. Third, we mention the theoretical development of the luminosity distance space distortion effect. Finally, we discuss the electromagnetic counterpart, multi-messenger astronomy, and its cosmological application.

The Gravitational Wave Universe Toolbox

Context.As the importance of gravitational wave (GW) astrophysics increases rapidly, astronomers interested in GWs who are not experts in this field sometimes need to get a quick idea of what GW sources can be detected by certain detectors, and the accuracy of the measured parameters.Aims.The GW-Toolbox is a set of easy-to-use, flexible tools to simulate observations of the GW universe with different detectors, including ground-based interferometers (advanced LIGO, advanced VIRGO, KAGRA, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, and also customised interferometers), space-borne interferometers (LISA and a customised design), and pulsar timing arrays mimicking the current working arrays (EPTA, PPTA, NANOGrav, IPTA) and future ones. We include a broad range of sources, such as mergers of stellar-mass compact objects, namely black holes, neutron stars, and black hole–neutron star binaries, supermassive black hole binary mergers and inspirals, Galactic double white dwarfs in ultra-compact orbit, extreme-mass-ratio inspirals, and stochastic GW backgrounds.Methods.We collected methods to simulate source populations and determine their detectability with various detectors. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive description of the methodology and functionality of the GW-Toolbox.Results.The GW-Toolbox produces results that are consistent with previous findings in the literature, and the tools can be accessed via a website interface or as a Python package. In the future, this package will be upgraded with more functions.

Neutron displacement noise-free interferometer for gravitational-wave detection

An interferometer design that cancels all displacement noises of its test masses and maintains a gravitational-wave (GW) signal by combining multiple detector signals is called a displacement noise-free interferometer (DFI). The idea has been considered previously for a laser interferometer. However, a limitation of a laser DFI is that its sensitive frequency band is too high for astrophysical GW sources, $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{5}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$ even for a kilometer-sized interferometer. To circumvent this limitation, in this paper, we propose a neutron DFI, in which neutrons are used instead of light. Since neutrons have velocities much lower than the speed of light, the sensitive frequency band of a neutron DFI can be lowered down to $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$. Therefore, a neutron DFI can be utilized for detecting GWs that are inaccessible by an ordinary laser interferometer on the ground.

CLASS_GWB: robust modeling of the astrophysical gravitational wave background anisotropies

Gravitational radiation offers a unique possibility to study the large-scale structure of the Universe, gravitational wave sources and propagation in a completely novel way. Given that gravitational wave maps contain a wealth of astrophysical and cosmological information, interpreting this signal requires a non-trivial multidisciplinary approach. In this work we present the complete computation of the signal produced by compact object mergers accounting for a detailed modelling of the astrophysical sources and for cosmological perturbations. We develop the CLASS_GWB code, which allows for the computation of the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational wave background, accounting for source and detector properties, as well as effects of gravitational wave propagation. We apply our numerical tools to robustly compute the angular power spectrum of the anisotropies of the gravitational wave background generated by astrophysical sources in the LIGO-Virgo frequency band. The end-to-end theoretical framework we present can be easily applied to different sources and detectors in other frequency bands. Moreover, the same numerical tools can be used to compute the anisotropies of gravitational wave maps of the sky made using resolved events.

Calibration uncertainty’s impact on gravitational-wave observations

Our ability to characterize astrophysical gravitational waves depends on our understanding of the detectors used to observe them. Specifically, our ability to calibrate current kilometer-scale interferometers can potentially confound the inference of astrophysical signals. Current calibration uncertainties are dominated by systematic errors between the modeled and observed detector responses and are well described by a Gaussian process. I exploit this description to analytically examine the impact of calibration uncertainty. I derive closed-form expressions for the conditioned likelihood of the calibration error given the observed data and an astrophysical signal (astrophysical calibration) as well as for the marginal likelihood for the data given a signal (integrated over the calibration uncertainty). I show that calibration uncertainty always reduces search sensitivity and the amount of information available about astrophysical signals. Additionally, calibration uncertainty will fundamentally limit the precision to which loud signals can be constrained, a crucial factor when considering the scientific potential of proposed third-generation interferometers. For example, I estimate that with 1% uncertainty in the detector response's amplitude and phase, one will only be able to measure the leading-order tidal parameter ($\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$) for a $1.4+1.4\text{ }\text{ }{M}_{\ensuremath{\bigodot}}$ system to better than $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ ($\ensuremath{\sim}0.2%$ relative uncertainty) for signals with signal-to-noise ratios $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{10}^{4}$. At this signal-to-noise ratio, calibration uncertainty increases ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}}$ by a factor of 2 compared to stationary Gaussian noise alone. Furthermore, 1% calibration uncertainty limits the precision to always be ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5$. At more modest signal-to-noise ratios ($\ensuremath{\lesssim}30$) characteristic of the current set of detected events, the uncertainty in $\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$ will be ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}100$ and will be dominated by the Gaussian noise rather than calibration uncertainty. I also show how to best select the frequencies at which calibration should be precisely constrained in order to minimize the information lost about astrophysical parameters. It is not necessary to constrain the calibration errors to be small at all frequencies to perform precise astrophysical inference for individual signals.

Testing the early universe with anisotropies of the gravitational wave background

In this work we analyse in detail the possibility of using small and intermediate-scale gravitational wave anisotropies to constrain the inflationary particle content. First, we develop a phenomenological approach focusing on anisotropies generated by primordial tensor-tensor-scalar and purely gravitational non-Gaussianities. We highlight the quantities that play a key role in determining the detectability of the signal. To amplify the power of anisotropies as a probe of early universe physics, we consider cross-correlations with CMB temperature anisotropies. We assess the size of the signal from inflationary interactions against so-called induced anisotropies. In order to arrive at realistic estimates, we obtain the projected constraints on the non-linear primordial parameter F NL for several upcoming gravitational wave probes in the presence of the astrophysical gravitational wave background. We further illustrate our findings by considering a concrete inflationary realisation and use it to underscore a few subtleties in the phenomenological analysis.

Uncovering astrometric black hole binaries with massive main-sequence companions with Gaia

Context. In the era of gravitational wave astrophysics and with the precise astrometry of billions of stellar sources, the hunt for compact objects is more alive than ever. Rarely seen massive binaries with a compact object are a crucial phase in the evolution towards compact object mergers. With the upcoming third Gaia data release (DR3), the first Gaia astrometric orbital solutions for binary sources will become available, potentially revealing many such binaries. Aims. We investigate how many black holes (BHs) with massive main-sequence dwarf companions (OB+BH binaries) are expected to be detected as binaries in Gaia DR3 and at the end of the nominal 5-year mission. We estimate how many of those are identifiable as OB+BH binaries and discuss the distributions of the masses of both components as well as of their orbital periods. We also explore how different BH-formation scenarios affect these distributions. Methods. We apply observational constraints to tailored models for the massive star population, which assume a direct collapse and no kick upon BH formation, to estimate the fraction of OB+BH systems that will be detected as binaries by Gaia, and consider these the fiducial results. These OB+BH systems follow a distance distribution according to that of the second Alma Luminous Star catalogue (ALS II). We use a method based on astrometric data to identify binaries with a compact object and investigate how many of the systems detected as binaries are identifiable as OB+BH binaries. Different scenarios for BH natal kicks and supernova mechanisms are explored and compared to the fiducial results. Results. In the fiducial case we conservatively estimate that 77% of the OB+BH binaries in the ALS II will be detected as binaries in DR3, of which 89% will be unambiguously identifiable as OB+BH binaries. By the end of the nominal 5-year mission, the detected fraction will increase to 85%, of which 82% will be identifiable. The 99% confidence intervals on these fractions are of the order of a few percent. These fractions become smaller for different BH-formation scenarios. Conclusions. Assuming direct collapse and no natal kick, we expect to find around 190 OB+BH binaries in Gaia DR3 among the sources in the ALS II, which increases the known sample of OB+BH binaries by more than a factor of 20 and covers an uncharted parameter space of long-period binaries (10 ≲ P ≲ 1000 d). Our results further show that the size and properties of the OB+BH population that is identifiable using Gaia DR3 will contain crucial observational constraints that will help us improve our understanding of BH formation. An additional ∼5 OB+BH binaries could be identified at the end of the nominal 5-year mission, which are expected to have either very short (P ≲ 10 d) or long periods (P ≳ 1000 d).
