The Role of Grandparents in Enhancing Children's Spiritual Intelligence: A Unique Case Study in Demak, Central Java, Indonesia

This study is important to describe the factors underlying the grandparent parenting pattern, how grandparents strengthen children's spiritual intelligence, and how grandparents strengthen children's spiritual intelligence. This study, conducted in the cultural context of Demak, Central Java, Indonesia, uses a qualitative case study approach using interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this study indicate several factors underlying the occurrence of grandparent parenting patterns, namely the divorce of both parents and the parent's job factor, which causes the care carried out by grandparents. The impact of grandparents in strengthening children's spirituality leads to various outcomes. On the positive side, children exhibit honesty, diligence, regular worship, Quranic studies, mosque attendance, and association with good friends. On the negative side, children may become spoiled and exploit the situation, such as doing work solely for rewards from grandparents. The author recommends that parents and grandparents work together to educate children; if they work together one day, the child will be even better.

The Role of Grandparents in Facilitating Children's Physical Activity.

Research suggests there is considerable opportunity to improve children's movement behaviors while they are being cared for by their grandparents. An understanding of the extent to which grandparent practices facilitate children's engagement in physical activity is critical to the development of health interventions targeting grandparent caregivers. This study examined the activity-related beliefs and practices of grandparents and their association with grandchildren's engagement in various movement behaviors while in grandparental care. Australian grandparents (N = 1190; 60% women) who provided regular care to a grandchild aged 3-14years were recruited via a web panel provider to complete an online survey. The survey assessed grandparents' physical activity-related beliefs (eg,perceived importance) and practices (eg,support and social control) and their grandchildren's engagement in physical activity (unstructured, structured, and outdoor play) and screen-based activities while in grandparental care. The importance of grandchildren's physical activity was rated highly by grandparents. Grandparents' support for their grandchildren's physical activity was positively associated with their grandchildren's engagement in structured physical activity, unstructured physical activity, and outdoor play. Negative social control was associated with greater engagement in screen-based activities. Other correlates of grandchildren's physical activity and screen-based activities included grandparents' own engagement in these activities. Findings highlight the importance of reinforcing the beliefs and practices that positively influence children's movement behaviors and addressing those that have unintended consequences. Encouraging grandparents to support their grandchildren's physical activity and discouraging forms of negative social control are likely to be important in efforts to promote physical activity in children.

The experiences of older migrant mothers and grandmothers with intergenerational solidarity in their transnational families

AbstractThe role of grandparents in providing support to their migrant adult children is well researched within the intergenerational cross‐border solidarity literature. Studies highlight the gendered care roles assumed by ‘left behind’ grandparents, usually women, who provide hands‐on caregiving to their young grandchildren. However, there is limited research on the supportive economic roles of older migrant women who help ‘left behind’ families navigate economically unpredictable circumstances through remittance transfers. This article makes a contribution by exploring the economic roles of older mothers and grandmothers who participate in the international labour market as paid care workers to support their families ‘back home.’ It draws on ethnographic research with Romanian women in their late 50s and 60s in Italy. Insight is gained into the experiences with transnational care and mobility of older mothers and grandmothers. More specifically, how expectations and demands for intergenerational solidarity in their families conditions women's migration projects, including its temporalities and the distribution of economic risks and responsibilities within the transnational family.

Long-term effects of grandparental child neglect on adult grandchildren's mental health: A three-generation study

Child neglect is a significant social problem with severe consequences for individuals and society. This study explores how intergenerational transmission of grandparental child neglect affects grandchildren's mental health in adulthood. We utilize a three-generational dataset from the Tromsø Study and estimate a linear probability model to find the distinct roles of both maternal and paternal grandparents. We test the additive risk hypothesis for continuous, intergenerational effects of child neglect in both the maternal and paternal lineages. Furthermore, we use structural equation modeling to test how sequential exposures to neglect across generations ultimately bear on adult mental health outcomes. Our results confirm the additive risk hypothesis but only for maternal grandparents: our findings show that only maternal parents' neglectful parenting is associated with an increased probability of depression in their grandchildren, conditional on whether their parents neglected them. These results contribute to research on intergenerational transmission by the finding that additive risks of child maltreatment flow down generations mainly through maternal lineages.

Preserving the Latvian Language Abroad: Personal Narratives and Institutional Support

Despite the widespread distribution of Latvians globally, the importance of heritage language for cultural connectivity remains underexplored. This study explores the preservation of the Latvian language among diaspora communities, employing linguistic autoethnography, participant observation, and communication analysis to examine the interplay between individual experiences and institutional support in maintaining cultural identity. Drawing from the author’s bilingual Latvian–Lithuanian background and based on the example of a mixed Latvian–Lithuanian family living in Finland, the study highlights the role of the family strategy in using languages at home, the role of grandparents, as well as heritage tourism, music, and arts in strengthening cultural ties. Through linguistic autoethnography, the article captures the essence of personal and collective efforts to sustain the Latvian language. Participant observation in diasporan activities and analysis of communicative practices reveal how diasporan Latvians actively engage in preserving their linguistic heritage. The Latvian Language Agency’s initiatives, including supporting language schools abroad, publishing educational resources, and organizing summer camps, are critically examined. The study advocates for a unified approach that combines personal commitment and structured support, emphasizing the crucial role of both in the vibrancy of the Latvian language abroad.

Young Children’s Play and the Role of Grandparents as Play Partners during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Play involves diverse meaning-making for young children and grandparents. This paper derives from a larger intergenerational family practices project conducted in Australia during 2021–2022 against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research team undertook intergenerational group interviews and filmed family play activities in addition to collecting videoclips and photos of young children’s play from six families. In this paper, vignettes from two families are described and given meaning. Rogoff’s social learning three planes theory involving the intertwined and interdependent—‘personal’, ‘interpersonal’, and ‘community’—planes is used to analyse the data. Our findings show the important role that grandparents play in facilitating children’s learning including through the creation of linguistic and cultural heritage play spaces. We argue that intergenerational play practices can offer a means to integrate linguistic and cultural experiences in young children’s lives by providing a space and time for social interaction and learning.

“Nobody Else Could Tell Those Stories”: Exploring Recollections of Grandparental Narratives in Early Adulthood

Existing research on grandparental narratives, or family stories told by grandparents, often centers accounts relayed by youth in adjacent-generation family structures where grandparents serve auxiliary roles; less is known about narratives shared by young adults from more diverse family structures—like grandfamilies (i.e., grandparents as primary parental figures)—which may have distinctive characteristics given differences in grandparent roles. Interviews with young adults (N = 12) with varying life satisfaction and grandparent-grandchild family structure (i.e., adjacent-generation or grandfamily) revealed distinct grandparental narrative characteristics (e.g., content, structure, storyteller) by family structure and identified their function as relationship reinforcement, memorialization, and connection to roots. While contributing new voices to the intergenerational narratives literature, this work suggests grandparental narratives could be used as tools by researchers and practitioners.

The role of lack of grandparental support in perinatal depression

BackgroundLow social support has been identified as a risk factor for perinatal mental health problems. However, previous studies mainly focused on partner support or general social support and neglected the roles of grandparents. Here, we examine whether a lack of grandparental support is related to increased risk of a diagnosis of perinatal depression. In addition, we examine whether poor grandparental support is related to more depressive symptoms in mothers with and without previously diagnosed perinatal depression and whether perceived grandparental support buffers against parenting difficulties in mothers with perinatal depression. MethodsThe sample was drawn from an Australian pregnancy cohort study and consisted of 725 women, including 230 women who met criteria for Major Depression. At 12 months postpartum, women reported on grandparental geographical proximity and hours of grandparental childcare support. Perceived grandparental support was assessed with the Postpartum Social Support Questionnaire and parenting difficulties and depressive symptoms with the Parenting Stress Index and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. ResultsPerceived grandparental support was related to fewer depressive symptoms among mothers with perinatal depression. In addition, higher levels of perceived grandparental support were related to lower parenting stress in mothers with and without perinatal depression. LimitationsIntergenerational conflicts and quality of grandparenting were not assessed. ConclusionsOur findings indicate that supportive grandparents may prevent the development of more severe perinatal depression in mothers experiencing perinatal mental health problems. Future studies should examine whether involving grandparents in treatment may add to the effectiveness of existing perinatal mental health interventions.

Grandparental support and maternal depression: Do grandparents’ characteristics matter more for separating mothers?

Grandparental support may protect mothers from depression, particularly mothers who separate and enter single parenthood. Using longitudinal Finnish register data on 116,917 separating and 371,703 non-separating mothers with young children, we examined differences in mothers’ antidepressant purchases by grandparental characteristics related to provision of support. Grandparents’ younger age (<70 years), employment, and lack of severe health problems predicted a lower probability of maternal depression. Depression was also less common if grandparents lived close to the mother and if the maternal grandparents’ union was intact. Differences in maternal depression by grandparental characteristics were larger among separating than among non-separating mothers, particularly during the years before separation. Overall, maternal grandmothers’ characteristics appeared to matter most, while the role of paternal grandparents was smaller. The findings suggest that grandparental characteristics associated with increased potential for providing support and decreased need of receiving support predict a lower likelihood of maternal depression, particularly among separating mothers.

Grandparental childcare, family allowances and retirement policies

The paper uses an OLG model to study the interaction between policies designed to ensure the sustainability of the pension system, i.e. child allowances and pensions policies, and grandparental childcare. We find that the rise in grandparenting negatively affects the elderly labour supply hampering the impact of pension policies designed to raise the retirement age and lengthen working lives. Then, we introduce child allowances and find that the impact of child allowances on the fertility rate is influenced by the efficiency of grandparenting in reducing child-rearing costs. Child benefits have a positive impact on fertility only if grandparenting is not very effective at reducing childcare costs. This suggests that the role of grandparents in various countries may partly explain the inconsistency in empirical evidence on the relationship between child benefits and fertility rates. The study also finds that child benefits have a positive impact on the elderly labour supply when grandparenting is efficient.

Grandchildhood: Care and relationality in narratives of three generations in Sweden

While the role of grandparents has increasingly been explored, the position of being a grandchild is under-researched. Recognising the active role of children in intergenerational care relationships, we analyse narratives of being a grandchild in Sweden in the 1940s–1950s, the 1970s–1980s, and today. Interviews with 63 participants of both genders show how conditions for care-doings change in response to welfare state developments and in relation to new ideals of childhood. Intensified engagements by grandparents in the life of grandchildren are identified, but also continuity in the significance of close and reciprocal relationships between grandchildren and grandparents.

The changing role of migrant grandparents and the emergence of dual-core familism in urban China

In China, Confucian authoritative familism has long established the tradition of paternal grandparents caring for grandchildren. With urbanisation in progress, many older people choose to settle in cities with their children, mainly to look after their grandchildren, and are known as ‘migrant grandparents’. Through a study of this group in Shanghai, the article reveals four other roles of migrant grandparents in addition to the role of caregivers: namely, workers, leisure seekers, in-laws (qingjia) and spouses. The prioritisation of grandparents’ roles demonstrates their increasing subjectivity in self-determination, transformative social values and personal life expectations. This article argues that Chinese older adults have begun to individualise and that these practices have contributed both to the destruction of the collective single-core family model in traditional and neo-familism and the emergence of independent, dual-core familism between two generations.

Role of grandparents in risky health behavior transmission: A study on smoking behavior in Norway

Exploring the role of grandparents in the intergenerational transmission of risky health behaviors, specifically smoking, this study aims to examine the differential influence of maternal and paternal grandparents on their grandchildren's smoking behavior in adulthood. Utilizing the Tromsø Study's unique three-generational dataset from Tromsø, Norway, we employ a control function approach. The findings show a matrilateral bias, revealing that maternal grandparents' smoking behavior has a notable negative direct effect on the probability of their grandchildren's smoking. No such influence is observed in the case of paternal grandparents. Moreover, an indirect transmission of grandparental smoking behavior from grandparents to grandchildren through parents is identified, increasing on grandchildren's smoking probability. These results underscore the necessity of incorporating the influential role of grandparents, in crafting public health policies and family-centered interventions for tobacco use.

The Self-Rated Health of Grandmothers Caring for Grandchildren: Evidence from South Africa

Globally older people are increasingly providing care for their grandchildren. A pertinent question across world regions is the extent to which providing care for grandchildren intersects with the ageing process and the implications for grandparents’ wellbeing. This paper examines the relationship between caring for grandchildren and the self-rated health of older African women (n = 1,397) in South Africa, drawing on data from the National Income Dynamics Study. This is a population which faces significant socio-economic challenges and stresses from the legacy of the HIV epidemic but benefit from a supportive social protection system and strong norms of extended family care. The findings show that prior self-rated health is not associated with assuming primary caregiving responsibilities for grandchildren, suggesting there is no selection effect into caring responsibilities. However, after controlling for prior characteristics, older women who take on primary caring responsibilities for grandchildren have significantly lower odds of reporting poorer self-rated health. Thus, in contrast to the frequent conclusions of negative impacts of custodial grandparenting on grandparent health in the US, this paper indicates that in some cultural contexts grandparents taking on the primary responsibility for grandchildren can be protective for health. Policymakers need to recognise the important caregiving role of grandparents and support them to flourish.

"She Is Stand-Offish Like That": Black Adults' Recognition of Child Behaviors Associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The purpose of this study is to identify the sociocultural factors in the Black community that contribute to a delay in identification of Black children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Four focus groups with parents of typically developing children were conducted at 2 Black Churches using a community-partnered participatory research approach and the socioecological model. Participants completed sociodemographic surveys, viewed CDC Autism Training Videos of Black children with ASD, and reported on their behavioral observations. Focus groups were audio recorded and transcribed. Thematic data analysis was conducted using NVivo software. At the individual level, participants interpreted ASD-associated behaviors as a problem of timing of developmental milestones in the course of normative development rather than a sign of a disorder and positive and negative characteristics. At the interpersonal level, the role of grandparents and extended family was important for monitoring child development. At the organizational level, racial concordance with health care providers was seen as critical because of historical mistrust. At the community level, fear of racism and child protective services and inequitable care emerged. At the policy level, there were concerns about access to affordable, high-quality care. This study provides insight into the sociocultural factors in the faith-based Black community that may contribute to a delay in identification of Black children with ASD. Health care professionals need additional training to effectively serve Black children and families in the face of historical mistrust and health care inequity.

The notions of mentoring and motherhood from a practical theological approach: Biblical examples and viewpoints

This paper investigates the importance of gleaning suitable information from the Old and the New Testaments to explore the concepts of ‘mentoring’ and ‘motherhood/or womanhood’. The paper also aims to determine the possibility to employ narratives about women as mentor figures in the Bible. An important issue to consider in the context of this paper is how women/mothers lived as role models for others during biblical times in patriarchal societies. Significantly, God established "right and loving" relationships with women throughout history. God has a special relationship with mothers, and He desires that all women develop caring relationships in order to guide and disciple other women. God assigns both parents the duty of teaching their children about His Word and commandments in Deuteronomy 6:7. Parents have a duty to instil in their children the knowledge of God's rules through instruction and discipline, as stated in Exodus 10:2. The teaching role of parents and grandparents is also confirmed in Joel 1:3. Children in this teaching function are guided or led to comprehend who they are in God. In addition, Luke 8:20-23 makes it clear that women accompanied Jesus. This Scripture comments on the essence of complimenting mothers for listening to God's Word and emphasising the family bond and the value of family. Also, in Psalms 127:3, and 139:13, motherhood is ordained and a blessing from God to families and society. Throughout the Bible, the notion of motherhood is described as a unique and important calling. In essence and summary, while both parents share an equal responsibility for teaching and disciplining their children, mothers have a greater task because of the many responsibilities they carry in life.

Childcare Crisis During the Pandemic: Analysing the Role of Grandparents in Multi-Generational Households

The COVID-19 crisis has dramatically altered our lives-both at the micro and macro levels. Apart from bringing in deaths, illnesses and devastations, it also struck at the most elementary level of our society - the children. The pandemic has forced educational institutions and offices to shift to an online mode, thus intensifying the already existing childcare crisis. In the midst of such an existential crisis, it is interesting to note that in many families, grandparents have stepped in for helping out their adult children who are already overwhelmed by work pressure, childcare and household responsibilities. Against such a background, an attempt has been made to understand the challenges that the grandparents have experienced in dealing with the pandemic childcare crisis. The paper also aims to understand the qualitative contribution of grandparents towards their children, grandkids and the coping strategies that the senior and middle generations have used in fighting with this unprecedented crisis.

Intergenerational Effects of Parenting on Children's Internalizing and Externalizing Trajectories: A Latent Growth Model Analysis.

Externalizing and internalizing problems in childhood are associated with risk for later psychopathology. It is important to identify antecedents as they may be targets for intervention. In a sample of 501 children (M = 6.07; 54.7% male; 12.4% Hispanic; 12.2% non-White), we leveraged data from a longitudinal study to examine the transmission of parenting behaviors across two generations and its effects on children's internalizing and externalizing outcomes in the subsequent generation. The results suggested transmission of parenting behaviors, confirmed the role of parenting on children's psychopathology, and provided novel evidence of a direct and indirect role of grandparent's caregiving on children's psychopathology via parenting continuity. These findings may inform interventions addressing continuity of parenting behaviors and their subsequent effects.
