Adsorption and Diffusion Properties of Gas in Nanopores of Kerogen: Insights from Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Investigating the adsorption and diffusion processes of shale gas within the nanopores of kerogen is essential for comprehending the presence of shale gas in organic matter of shale. In this study, an organic nanoporous structure was constructed based on the unit structure of Longmaxi shale kerogen. Grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation methods were employed to explore the adsorption and diffusion mechanisms of pure CH4, CO2, and N2, as well as their binary mixtures with varying mole fractions. The results revealed that the physical adsorption characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 gases on kerogen adhered to the Langmuir adsorption law. The quantity of adsorbed gas molecules increased with rising pressure but decreased with increasing temperature. The variation in the heat of adsorption was also analyzed. Under identical temperature and pressure conditions, the adsorption of CH4 increased with higher mole fractions of CH4, whereas it decreased with greater mole fractions of CO2 and N2. Notably, CO2 molecules exhibited a robust interaction with kerogen molecules compared to the adsorption properties of CH4 and N2. Furthermore, the self-diffusion coefficient of gas within kerogen nanopores gradually decreased with increasing pressure or decreasing temperature. The diffusion capacity of gas molecules followed the descending order N2 > CH4 > CO2 under the same pressure and temperature conditions.

Experimental and numerical studies on the chloride diffusion coefficient of calcium silicate hydrate gel

The chloride diffusivity of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), as the main hydration product of cement paste, plays an important role for the durability of concrete structures, especially for low w/c ratio ones. In this paper, in order to measure the chloride diffusion coefficient of C-S-H, a diffusion path conversion method is proposed to convert the primary diffusion path of ions from capillary pores to gel pores. By combining diffusion path conversion method with steady-state migration test, the diffusion coefficients of C-S-H are obtained. Based on 3D nanostructure, which is generated by a hybrid scheme of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics, the chloride diffusion coefficient of C-S-H is predicted by a 3D diffusive lattice modelling. Results from the experiments and simulation are compared with the data in the literature. Our work contributes to the understanding of C-S-H diffusivity and is of great importance for predicting the long-term durability of concrete structure.

Refinement of Kelvin equation for condensation of water in CSH slits based on molecular simulation

The adsorption and condensation of water molecules in the pores of cementitious materials play a crucial role in the mechanical performance and durability of concrete. The Kelvin equation is generally employed to describe the water condensation in porous materials. However, it requires modification for condensation behavior in nano and micro scales of pores. In the present work, various widths of slit models for several cementitious minerals were established. The adsorption isotherms in slit pores were calculated using the hybrid of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations, obtaining the relationship between the critical pressures for condensation and pore sizes. Then, a modified Kelvin equation was proposed, with discussion on a new reasonable method for determining the real thickness of adsorbed water film. The results demonstrate that condensation will occur in the slits within the critical width range, which promotes the surface adsorption to achieve complete adsorption. Therefore, the location of the interface between the adsorbed water film and condensed water bulk is fixed in the same mineral during condensation. The modified Kelvin equation shows higher accuracy than traditional Kelvin equations at the nano and micro scale. This work promotes a deeper understanding of the interaction mechanism of water with cementitious minerals and inspires more fundamental realization in the design of concrete durability.

Molecular simulation of competitive adsorption of CO2/N2/O2 gas in bituminous coal

The main cause of coal spontaneous combustion is the oxidation and temperature rise of coal. Injecting composite inert gas for fire prevention and extinguishing is one of the important methods to prevent coal spontaneous combustion. A large number of studies have macroscopically investigated the fire prevention and extinguishing effects of CO2/N2 and their synergistic actions. However, there is currently a lack of research at the molecular level on the competitive adsorption mechanism between mixed inert gases (CO2, N2) and O2 molecules in coal. Therefore, this study conducted adsorption experiments using Qian Yingzi(QYZ) bituminous coal and compared them with the simulation data of the Wiser coal model to verify the reliability of the Wiser model. Subsequently, employing grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) methods, the competitive adsorption behavior of different proportions of binary mixed component gases (CO2/O2, CO2/N2, O2/N2) at a temperature of 303.15 K was investigated from five perspectives: adsorption capacity, adsorption selectivity coefficient, potential energy distribution, competitive adsorption heat, and interaction energy. The results indicate that among the competitive component gases, CO2 exhibits the strongest adsorption effect on the entire system, which is closely correlated with the distribution range of adsorption energy sites. The adsorption heat and adsorption amount of CO2 consistently exhibit a negative correlation, whereas the relationship between the adsorption heat of N2 and O2 and the adsorption amount shows a positive correlation. Their adsorption capacities depend on the pressure and the proportion of the two gases. Based on the isothermal adsorption curve of CO2/N2, it is recommended that the gas pressure during actual inert gas injection be less than 2.5 MPa. Under this pressure, the competitive adsorption effect is no longer significant, providing a certain theoretical basis for high-pressure injection. Moreover, the preliminary determination of the optimal injection ratio range is from 4:6–3:7. Furthermore, a systematic logical framework for selecting underground inert gas composition is proposed, and an underground mobile inert gas infusion process is adopted. The actual gas composition for infusion is determined based on cost factors in practical engineering. The research results can provide guidance for the selection of gas injection parameters for mixed inert gas fire prevention and extinguishing in goaf.

Microscopic simulation study on the penetration property of pure hydrogen sulfide gas in polyethylene and polyvinylidene fluoride

The H2S penetration in the nonmetallic biogas pipelines and reinforced thermoplastic composite pipelines can lead to severe environmental pollution and disrupt the regular operations of oil and gas fields. Thus, delving into and comprehending the H2S penetration in polyethylene (PE) or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVF2) holds immense significance for both environmental preservation and industrial progress. In this study, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) are employed to investigate and contrast the H2S penetration property within PE and PVF2 at 300–360 K and 0.1–1.5 MPa. The results indicate the diffusion and penetration coefficients decrease with decreasing temperature and pressure, while the solubility coefficient increases with decreasing temperature. Compared to PE, PVF2 demonstrates stronger resistance to H2S penetration, mainly due to H2S is difficult to diffuse in PVF2. The relationship between penetration coefficient and temperature is consistent with Arrhenius law. In 0.1 MPa, the activation energy of H2S in PE and PVF2 are 31,911 and 42,247 J/mol, respectively. Moreover, the relationship between activation energy and pressure is power function. The study also reveals the H2S diffusion in both PE and PVF2 follows the leap mechanism. These research findings can offer valuable guidance for reducing environmental pollution and ensuring industrial development.

Highly selective PAN@MOFs composite nanofiber for removal of C4F7N/CO2 harmful decomposition products

Perfluoroisobutyronitrile (C4F7N) mixed with CO2 has emerged as a promising eco-friendly alternative to sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in gas-insulated equipment (GIE). However, thermal or discharge faults in GIE inevitably lead to the generation of harmful decomposition by-products, necessitating their prompt removal to safeguard equipment operation and personnel safety. In this study, we propose a nanofiber composite material comprising polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the base and multi-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as the primary adsorbent material for removing typical decomposition components of C4F7N/CO2 gas mixture. Utilizing grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we elucidate the selective adsorption mechanisms. Experimental results show that PAN@HKUST-1(Cu) exhibits superior adsorption efficiency for fluorocarbon gases compared to PAN@MIL-101(Cr), while the latter demonstrates better performance for nitrile gases. The PAN@HKUST-1(Cu)/MIL-101(Cr) composite adsorbent effectively removes eight typical harmful decomposition products while minimally affecting C4F7N. Our findings suggest that PAN@HKUST-1(Cu)/MIL-101(Cr) nanofiber film holds promise as an adsorbent for C4F7N/CO2 based GIE.

Investigation of the microscopic mechanism of H2O adsorption by low-rank coal slit pores through GCMC and MD simulations

This study investigates the influence of pore structure on H2O adsorption in low-rank coal (LRC) models at a molecular level, employing variously sized LRC slit-pore models·H2O adsorption behavior is analyzed across different pore sizes ranging from 0.001 to 100 kPa fugacity, by employing the Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore saturated adsorption kinetics. The findings indicate a positive correlation between H2O adsorption levels and both fugacity and pore diameter. Furthermore, at constant pore diameter, the adsorption heat increases exponentially with increasing adsorption levels. Notably, H2O adsorption in LRC slit pores exhibits multilayer adsorption characteristics. First, adsorption occurs as monomolecular layers on the LRC surface, transitioning to secondary adsorption sites formed by previously adsorbed H2O molecules with increasing fugacity, ultimately saturating the pores. This adsorption process exhibits a correlation with a shift in potential energy distribution from high to low potential energy directions. Moreover, the ordering of H2O molecule arrangements between hydrogen atoms, oxygen atoms, and H2O molecules decreases with increasing pore diameters. Larger pore diameters correspond to increased H2O molecule diffusion, the stronger interaction between the LRC slit pores and H2O molecules but reduced interaction with individual H2O molecules. Overall, this study establishes a theoretical foundation for further studies on coal pore wetting and offer valuable insights for studies aimed at reducing dust and preventing gas outbursts.

Macromolecular insight into the adsorption and migration properties of CH4/CO2/N2 in bituminous coal matrix under uniaxial strain loading

Gas adsorption–migration in coal is of crucial importance for coalbed methane (CBM) recovery; however, the effect of coal deformation on it is not yet very clear, especially at the molecular level. In this study, the effects of uniaxial tension–compression strains on the CH4/CO2/N2 adsorption–migration characteristics in bituminous coal matrix were investigated by integrating the grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics methods. The results show that the dual-mode equation fits the isothermal adsorption results, and the adsorption concentration and Langmuir volume are positively correlated with strain. Tension strain has a small effect on a thermodynamic factor but a large effect on Henry constant. In addition, the swelling resistance of coal matrix is positively correlated with tension strain which has a greater impact on the shear resistance of coal matrix containing CO2. The average mass density of the gas is linearly positively correlated with strain that has a large impact on N2 stability. More significantly, the self-diffusion coefficient (Ds) of CH4 is larger than that of CO2/N2, and the relationship between Fick diffusion coefficient and strain is roughly similar to that between Ds and strain. Also, the mass transfer of CO2 permeation is more significant compared to N2, especially for tension strain. These research results provide a basis for the optimization design of CBM recovery in deformed coal reservoirs.

Grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics investigation of hydrogen solubility and diffusivity in nonmetallic polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and polyvinylidene fluoride pipes materials

To choose appropriate nonmetallic pipe materials for reducing hydrogen permeation, the hydrogen permeability in polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and polyvinylidene fluoride are studied and compared by molecular dynamics simulations. The findings demonstrate the solubility coefficient of hydrogen in polyvinyl chloride rises as the temperature decreases. However, in polyethylene and polyvinylidene fluoride, the trend is reversed. With the decrease of temperature, the diffusion and permeability coefficients decrease. The diffusion of hydrogen molecules follows the jumping mechanism. Among the materials studied, polyvinylidene fluoride is the most suitable material for hydrogen pipes due to its superior resistance to hydrogen permeation.

Research on CO2/CH4/N2 competitive adsorption characteristics of anthracite coal from Shanxi Sihe coal mine.

This study aims to solve the problem of unsatisfactory development and utilization of coalbed methane and CO2 storage efficiency. It is focused on the adsorption behavior of CO2, CH4, and N2 in the macromolecular structure model of Shanxi Sihe coal mine anthracite, as well as the competitive adsorption behavior of CO2/CH4 and CH4/N2 binary gas mixtures with different ratios. Experimental analysis such as elemental analysis, solid 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to construct the Shanxi Sihe coal mine model of the macromolecular structure of anthracite coal. The Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods were used to study the adsorption capacity and heat characteristics of CO2, CH4, and N2 at different temperatures using a molecular model of anthracite coal from Shanxi Sihe coal mine, as well as the competitive adsorption characteristics of CO2/CH4 and CH4/N2 binary mixtures. The mechanism of the influence of temperature and gas properties on the adsorption capacity and heat of adsorption was revealed from a microscopic perspective. The results indicated that the aromatic carbon content of anthracite in the Sihe coal mine, Shanxi is 81.19%, and the ratio Xbp of aromatic bridgehead carbon to surrounding carbon is 0.489. The aromatic structure is mainly composed of pyrene and anthracene. The molecular formula of the macromolecular structure model of anthracite in Shanxi Sihe coal mine is C233H157O13N2. The adsorption capacity and equivalent adsorption heat of the macromolecular model for adsorbing single-component gas CO2/CH4/N2 decrease with the increase in temperature. The temperature has the greatest impact on CO2 adsorption capacity and adsorption heat, followed by CH4 and N2. Under the competitive adsorption conditions of CO2/CH4 and CH4/N2 binary mixtures, the higher the partial pressure of a single-component gas in the mixture, the greater the adsorption capacity of the gas. The difference in the adsorption heat of CH4 and N2 is smaller than that of CH4 and CO2. The conclusions obtained from the study can provide technical and theoretical support for formulating reasonable drainage methods for coalbed methane wells.

Molecular Simulation of Nafion Swelling in the Cathode Catalyst Layer of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

As the world moves towards carbon neutrality, polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have emerged as a vital technology in recent years. The cathode catalyst layer of PEFCs is characterized by its porous structure, which promotes the production of water molecules from oxygen and protons through chemical reactions. The ionomer thin films, predominantly composed of Nafion, are critical in regulating the transport and mobility of molecules and ions in the cathode catalyst layer. Sulfonic groups in the side chains of Nafion enable accumulation of water molecules, causing the ionomer thin films to swell.Previous studies have examined the swelling of Nafion under wet conditions[1][2]. However, precise swelling mechanisms remain unclear. While privious research has analyzed the relationship between relative humidity and the amount of water within bulk Nafion samples[3], the swelling behavior in films with thickness of several nanometers differs significantly, necessitating further investigation[4]. This study therefore investigates the swelling mechanisms and the properties of ionomer thin films used in the cathode catalyst layer of PEFCs. This study aims to establish guidelines for designing the molecular structures of ionomers by elucidating the mechanisms underlying ionomer swelling in the cathode catalyst layer. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to reproduce swelling in Nafion thin films and examine the impact of Nafion's structure on water content and swelling. These molecular simulation techniques enable the elucidation of the influence exerted by polymer structure on water content and swelling at the molecular scale.In this study, we firstly created a simulation model of a Nafion system using LAMMPS[5], the DREIDING Force Field[6], and Mulliken charges[7] in which parameter settings were referred from literature values[8]. The Nafion system contains 10 Nafion molecules with a degree of polymerization of 10, water molecules, and 100 oxonium ions for electrical neutrality. The density of 1.9 g/cm3 achieved during simulations closely agrees with literature values[8].To reproduce Nafion swelling under humid conditions, GCMC simulations and MD simulations were employed. The rationale behind utilizing GCMC simulations lies in the fact that they enable the insertion of water molecules into the Nafion system under constant chemical potential conditions, thereby inducing Nafion swelling. Subsequent to the GCMC simulations, MD simulations were performed under the NPT ensemble, which facilitated the system to reach equilibrium. This alternating cycle of GCMC and MD simulations is repeated to realize the final swelling state. Preliminary results indicate lower water content values than those experimentally measured under similar conditions. Possible causes include inadequate force field parameters that lead to polymer morphology different from the actual Nafion structure.Future work will explore the causes of these discrepancies and examine the effects of Nafion's structure on water content and swelling under various conditions. This will involve testing alternative force field parameters and initial structures to better represent the molecular-level structure of ionomer thin films on carbon support particles in the cathode catalyst. Additionally, we will investigate how different relative humidity conditions, temperatures, and ionomer compositions influence swelling behavior, which could provide insights into optimizing PEFCs performance under various operating environments.[1] G. Fluorinated Metal–Organic Framework–Polymer Mixed Matrix Membrane with Tunable Hydrophobic Channel for Efficient Pervaporation of Butanol/Water

The permeability–selectivity trade‐off of membrane is a major challenge limiting the development of pervaporation (PV) technology. Rational design of high‐performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) has the potential to break off the trade‐off. Herein, a solvent‐assisted linker exchange‐based strategy is reported to introduce fluoroalkyl into metal–organic framework‐808 (MOF‐808). The pore size of fluorinated MOF‐808 can be adjusted with fluoroalkyl of different chain length (like trifluoromethyl and pentafluoropropyl). Then, the fluorinated MOF‐808/polyether block amide (PEBA) MMMs are prepared for the PV of n‐butanol/water. Compared with pristine PEBA membrane, 20 wt% 3F‐MOF‐808(P)/PEBA MMMs (3F = ‐CF3 group; P = postmodification method) exhibit 69% increase in permeation flux and 33% increase in separation factor in the PV of 2.5 wt% n‐butanol aqueous solutions at 70 °C. Based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, fluorinated MOF‐808 shows better butanol affinity (pull effect) and stronger water repulsion ability (push effect). And the “push–pull effect” between fluorinated MOF‐808 with butanol/water is helpful to enhance the PV performance of MMMs. The application of “push–pull effect” provides a new strategy for the rational design of high‐performance MMMs, which is of great significance for the in‐depth research and application of PV technology.

Disentanglement of Surface and Confinement Effects for Diene Metathesis in Mesoporous Confinement.

We study the effects of a planar interface and confinement on a generic catalytically activated ring-closing polymerization reaction near an unstructured catalyst. For this, we employ a coarse-grained polymer model using grand-canonical molecular dynamics simulations with a Monte Carlo reaction scheme. Inspired by recent experiments in the group of M. Buchmeiser that demonstrated an increase in ring-closing selectivity under confinement, we show that both the interface effects, i.e., placing the catalyst near a planar wall, and the confinement effects, i.e., locating the catalyst within a pore, lead to an increase of selectivity. We furthermore demonstrate that curvature effects for cylindrical mesopores (2 nm < d < 12.3 nm) influence the distribution of the chain ends, leading to a further increase in selectivity. This leads us to speculate that specially corrugated surfaces might also help to enhance catalytically activated polymerization processes.

Molecular Simulation of Nitrogen Adsorption in Multidimensional Nanopores and New Insights into the Inversion of Pore Size Distribution for Gas Shale

Low-temperature nitrogen adsorption is a widely used method for the research and evaluation of gas shale’s pore structure. The existing interpretation method, utilizing gas adsorption isotherms to obtain pore size distribution (PSD), is always based on the one-dimensional geometry model, while the void space of gas shale has strong multi-dimensional characteristics. It is necessary to investigate the nitrogen condensation and evaporation behavior in multidimensional structures. In this study, a series of two-dimensional and three-dimensional models based on ink-bottle pores were constructed. A hybrid molecular simulation approach combining grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) is proposed to simulate the low-temperature nitrogen adsorption isotherms. Three aspects have been analyzed in detail. Compared with the conventional understanding that the threshold of cavitation in the ink-bottle pore only relates to throat diameter, this study discloses a wider and more comprehensive range of conditions of cavitation that considers both the throat length and diameter. As pore spaces of shale samples consist of many complex interconnected pores, the multi-stage ink-bottle pore model is more suitable than the single ink-bottle pore model to similarly reproduce the wider cavitation pressure range. A more universal parameter is proposed that quantitatively unifies the influence of cavity diameter and length on condensation pressure and has good applicability in cavities with different shapes. This work quantitatively studies the nitrogen adsorption isotherms of three-dimensional complex nanopore structures using molecular simulation and provides a reasonable explanation for the low-temperature nitrogen adsorption isotherms of gas shale.

Transport property of hydrogen sulfide in amorphous polyethylene using grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations

H2S corrosion poses a significant hurdle to safely transporting sulfur-containing natural gas through metal gathering pipes. Reinforced thermoplastic composite pipes have emerged as a solution, using the polyethylene inner lining layer that resists H2S corrosion. However, the permeation of H2S in the polyethylene may lead to the failure of reinforced thermoplastic composite pipes, resulting in natural gas leakage and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the gas transport properties of H2S in polyethylene materials to ensure the reliable functioning of gathering pipes. In this study, the dissolution behavior of H2S for pure H2S and H2S/CH4 mixture in amorphous PE is investigated using the grand canonical Monte Carlo method in conjunction with the NPT, with consideration given to the swelling effect. In addition, the diffusion characteristic is explored through the NVT on the amorphous PE adsorbing H2S. Subsequently, the permeability coefficient is calculated based on the obtained data. The findings reveal that with as the temperature increases, the solubility coefficient decreases, while both the diffusion and permeability coefficients increase. With increasing pressure, both the diffusion and permeability coefficients increase. Additionally, the above three coefficients all increase with increasing H2S mole fraction. The relationships between solubility, diffusion, and permeability coefficients & temperature all conform to the Arrhenius law. Finally, the diffusion mechanism of H2S in amorphous PE is revealed at the microscopic level as the “jumping” mechanism by tracking the diffusion pathway of H2S molecule.

Competitive sorption of CO2/CH4 and CO2 capture on modified silica surfaces: A molecular simulation

The effect of functionalization of modified silica (FMS) surfaces on the adsorption behaviors for CH4, CO2 and the mixture have been studied by combining a grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) methods. The isotherms, gas distribution, sorption sites, isosteric heat, interaction energy and adsorption selectivity for CO2/CH4 mixture are computed and discussed. And the effects of pressure and temperature on adsorption behavior are also studied. The adsorption capacity (C) of surface with various functional groups for CH4 is as follows: C(SiO2-COOH) > C(SiO2-SH) > C(SiO2-OH) > C(SiO2-CH3) > C(SiO2-NH2) > C(SiO2-H) and for CO2 is as follows: C(SiO2-COOH) > C(SiO2-SH) > C(SiO2-NH2) > C(SiO2-OH) > C(SiO2-CH3) > C(SiO2-H). Increasing temperature is not advantageous for gas adsorption on all FMS surfaces. The CO2/CH4 selectivity (S) for FMS surfaces decrease in the following order of S(SiO2-COOH) > S(SiO2-NH2) > S(SiO2-OH) > S(SiO2-SH) > S(SiO2-CH3) > S(SiO2-H). As the pressure increase, the CO2/CH4 selectivity decrease early and then flatten out to a constant value. The isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst) for gas adsorbed on each FMS surface are also calculated, the value of isosteric heat for CO2 is much higher than that for CH4 due to the stronger interaction between CO2 molecules and functional groups of FMS surface. The result of the smallest self-diffusion coefficients of gas in SiO2-COOH slit pores is consistent with the adsorption capacity in the slit pore with corresponding functional group. The electronegative atoms in the functional group act as basic adsorption sites for gas adsorbate molecules, which generates a larger electrostatic contribution on the selectivity of CO2 over CH4.

Adsorption behaviors for clathrate hydrates of CO2 with mixed gases

Here, the preference and adsorption capacities of guest molecules in the sI and sII hydrate of water cages when CO2 + H2S, CO2 + SO2 and CO2 + N2O gas mixture form hydrates are simulated by using grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics hybrid simulations method. The results indicate that SO2 prefers to occupy large cages, H2S prefers small cages for CO2 + H2S and CO2 + SO2 and N2O exhibits little preference between small or large or cages of CO2 + N2O sI hydrates, respectively. The abundance ratio shows hydrate can effectively achieve the separation of flue gases. Moreover, the thermodynamics calculation results show that the impurity gases H2S, SO2 and N2O favors the formation of CO2 hydrate. The stability CO2 + H2S, CO2 + SO2 and CO2 + N2O sI hydrates is higher compared to the stability of sII hydrates. The phase equilibrium analysis provides clear evidence that enclathration of H2S and SO2 molecules into the water cages of the hydrate structure plays a crucial role in stabilizing the hydrate lattices. The findings of this study suggest that removal of certain flue gas impurities is not required during the replacement of CH4 in hydrate form with the CO2 gas. The current investigation provides theoretical background for executing replacement of CH4 in hydrate form with the CO2 gas.

Ab initio selection of zeolite topology for biomass conversion to para-xylene based on transition state selectivity

Recent reports have pointed out a sustainable and highly selective formation route via the Diels–Alder (DA) cycloaddition between biomass-derived 2, 5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and ethene over zeolitic catalysts to produce para-xylene (p-xylene). Here, a systematic multi-scale simulation was carried out to identify candidate zeolite frameworks with potentially better catalytic activities than previously reported catalysts, through a combination of “ab initio” synthesis, thermodynamic and kinetic analysis, and adsorption/diffusion simulations. We first screened representative zeolites based on the limiting dimensions of their voids (windows, cages, channels) for reactants and products, the extent of stabilization of the key transition states by organic structure directing agents, and the synthesis difficulty informed by literature knowledge. Subsequently, the intrinsic and apparent free energy barriers of the rate-determining step (i.e., cycloaddition) obtained from density functional theory calculations were used to predict reaction kinetics of the potentially useful zeolites. Finally, three final candidates (MOR, MOZ, and IFR) and two experimentally validated zeolites (FAU and BEA) were employed to compare the adsorption and diffusion performance of DMF and p-xylene as the final criterion by grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. In summary, MOR shows the fastest diffusion, IFR shows the lowest apparent energy barrier, and MOZ shows the lowest intrinsic energy barrier. Altogether, this study not only predicts MOR, IFR, and MOZ zeolites to have a good catalytic performance for the DA-dehydration process of DMF and ethene to p-xylene but also illustrates the potential of ab initio selection, through combined theoretical assessments of adsorption, reaction and diffusion, for the rational selection and design of optimal catalysts for targeted catalytic transformations.

Grand-canonical molecular dynamics simulations powered by a hybrid 4D nonequilibrium MD/MC method: Implementation in LAMMPS and applications to electrolyte solutions.

Molecular simulations in an open environment, involving ion exchange, are necessary to study various systems, from biosystems to confined electrolytes. However, grand-canonical simulations are often computationally demanding in condensed phases. A promising method [L. Belloni, J. Chem. Phys. 151, 021101 (2019)], one of the hybrid nonequilibrium molecular dynamics/Monte Carlo algorithms, was recently developed, which enables efficient computation of fluctuating number or charge density in dense fluids or ionic solutions. This method facilitates the exchange through an auxiliary dimension, orthogonal to all physical dimensions, by reducing initial steric and electrostatic clashes in three-dimensional systems. Here, we report the implementation of the method in LAMMPS with a Python interface, allowing facile access to grand-canonical molecular dynamics simulations with massively parallelized computation. We validate our implementation with two electrolytes, including a model Lennard-Jones electrolyte similar to a restricted primitive model and aqueous solutions. We find that electrostatic interactions play a crucial role in the overall efficiency due to their long-range nature, particularly for water or ion-pair exchange in aqueous solutions. With properly screened electrostatic interactions and bias-based methods, our approach enhances the efficiency of salt-pair exchange in Lennard-Jones electrolytes by approximately four orders of magnitude, compared to conventional grand-canonical Monte Carlo. Furthermore, the acceptance rate of NaCl-pair exchange in aqueous solutions at moderate concentrations reaches about 3% at the maximum efficiency.
